Anewhomeisbeingsoughtfor acarthatwas“probablyreal flashinitsday”.
TePuke’sKenGriffinhasownedthe in-need-ofrestorationModelTFord fortwoandahalfyearsand,whilehe hasdonesomeworkonthecar,hisreal interestslieelsewhere.
Thechassis,withrunning gearandmotor,was shippedtoNew Zealandfrom Canadain1923.
“Andtherestof itwasbuilthere inNewZealand -that’swhyit’sa right-handdrive,” saidGriffin.
“Backinthosedays youhadtohavealotof moneytobuyabrand-new car.”
“Iputanelectricfuelpumpinit andoverhauledthestartermotorand generator,butI’venotgotanyfurther,” hesaid.
“Thehardestthingisfindinganyone whoknowsanythingaboutthem. PeopleknowalotaboutthemodelAs butnotthemodelTs.”

Apanelatthebackoftheenginebay indicatesthebodywasbuiltbyCL NeilsenandCoLtdinDannevirke, amajorcompanyinthetownthat operatedbetween1909and1933.
PriortoGriffinbuyingthecar,itwas inAuckland.
Body,paintandparts
Themotorhadceasedbuthegotit turningoverandstrippedsomeofthe paintfromthecar,revealingthebrass windscreenframe.




Hesaidgenerallythecar “hasn’tbeenmucked aboutwith”andhas manyofitsoriginal featuresincluding woodenspoked wheels,running boards,steering, chassis,lightsand radiator.Healso has“twoorthree boxesfullofparts”. Themainmissing elementsarethecar’s interiorseating,withjusta plywoodseatinitatthemoment.
Notastraight-forwarddrive
Griffinsaidevenlearninghowto drivethecaristricky,althoughthere arevideosontheinternet.
Therearethreefloorpedals,noneof whicharetheaccelerator-that’son thesteeringcolumn-andtwoforward andonereversegear.
“Theyhadnooilpump,nofuel pumpsowhenyoucametosteephills, youhadtoturnaroundandbackup.” Thiswasbecausefuelwasfedto

Onemanisonamissionto keepTePukebeautiful,but hecan’tdoitonhisown.
TePukeisthelatest communitytobewelcomed intotheKeepNewZealand Beautifulfamily,andsofarthat welcomeisdowntooneman, CraigWallace.
TheofficialKeepTePuke Beautifulgroupwasone ofmorethan50acrossthe countrythatformsanetwork ofpassionatecommunity-led environmentalgroups.
Wallace’sjourneystartedwith pickingupafewstraypiecesof rubbishnearhishome,butwith afast-foodoutlet,ahighschool andacricketfieldnearby,he quicklyrealisedthescaleof theissue.
“InSeptemberorOctoberlast yearIjustwentoutsideontothe frontlawnandsomeonehad droppedsomethingonthefront verge,soIjustpickeditupand didn’tthinkmuchofit.
“ThenextdayIwentoutand justacrosstheroaditwasa similarthingandfromthere, Iprobablyjuststartednoticing itmore.”
Walkingaroundnearbystreets
andparks,hebeganpicking uplitterandstartedtakinga shoppingbagwithhim.Over a15-hourperiod,hecollected enoughdiscardedcanstofilla 240-litrerecyclingbin.
“Onceyouseeit,youcan’t unseeit,”hesaid.“It’sreallyjust gonefromthere.”

WallacewascontactedbyKeep NewZealandBeautiful’snational supportmanager,WayneGazley. GazleyvisitedWallaceand broughtsomeequipmentand brandedcapsandshirts. NowWallacewantstomake surehisisateamofmorethan one–andtoformagroup thatwillmakeregularsweeps oftheareacollectingrubbish. Anotherideaistohavegroupsor individualsadoptastreet,areaor parkandmakeittheirmission
tokeepittidy.

GazleysaidWallace’s commitmentwasinspiringand reflectsthegrassrootsspiritof theorganisation.

“WewenttoWhitianga,did bitoftraining, organisedthehiab truckandshiftedit alldownhere-that wasinAugustlast year,”saidMiller. Themachinery hasbeenupgraded tomakeitmore urateandeasierto ereallycouldn’t believeit,theexcitementwas prettysurreal.”

BothGriffinandMillerhavebeen wearingStomperssincetheywere teenagers.
“Iwearmineeverysingleday,”said Miller.Sincetheystartedtalkingaboutit, theyhavefoundthereareplentyofothers whoarethesame.

“We’vehadpeoplesaythey’vebeen wearingthemfor30years,”saidMiller. AtafishingcompetitioninKawhia, Griffinwenttotalktosomeonewearing apair.
“He’dhadhisfor20years.We’vesent specialorderstoAustraliawherepeople havesaidtheycan’tgetadecentjandal.” Millersaiditshowedthedurabilityof Stompers,thattheyarecomfortableand highquality.
“Thosearethereasonswechasedthis up,”saidGriffin.
Therewasabreakinproductionwhile theequipmentwasinstorage.
“That’swhenStomperswerenomore –youcouldn’tfindthem–foryears, probably10years,andwehaven’thada decentjandalsincetheystopped.”
Thatwasuntilmanufacturebegan againinWhitiangaandtheystart
reappearinginstores.
Allthemanufacturingisdonebyhand byGriffinandMiller.
“Actually,alotoftimegoesintomaking onepair,”saidGriffin.
Itmeansunusualsizesandfootshapes canbeaccommodated,andit’snot unknownforMillertomakeupapairfor acustomeronthespot.

Whilepairhavehadalotoffun,there hasbeentheoddheadache.
