March20,from10amuntilnoon.

GuestspeakersincludeIT specialists,bankmanagersandprivate contractors,whowillgiveeasy-tofollowpresentationsoncybersecurity awareness,banking,investmentand romancescams,credentialharvesting, passwordsandfraud.

Followingthepresentations,there willbelightrefreshmentsandthe opportunitytomeettheexpertsandask questions.

“Thereisanincreasingneedfor cybersecurityawarenesswithinour communities,”saidthedistrictcouncil’s communitydigitalsupportassistant TracySilver.

“Scammershavealwaysbeenwith us,buttheyarebecomingmore sophisticated.

“Althoughwecan’tstopthem, therearethingswecandotoprotect ourselves.Regularrefreshercourseslike thisonecanhelpyoustayontopofthe latestscammingtactics.”

SimilareventsinKatikatiand Ōmokoroahaveprovedpopularwithup to60peopleattending.Whileitisafree event,peopleareencouragedtoregister togiveanindicationofnumbers.

Afterhopesshewouldgetthe chancetorepresent NewZealandattheOlympics asanartistic(synchronised) swimmercametonaught, TePuke’sKarlinaSteinerhas turnedherattentiontorowing –withthesameultimategoal.

TheformerTePukeHighSchool student,whohasreturnedtothe schoolasastaffmember,recently securedherfirstrowingmedal –silveraspartofaneightatthe nationalrowingchampionshipson LakeRuataniwhainTwizel.

Olympicdesires

Asanartisticswimmer,she representedNewZealandatthe worldchampionshipsof2019, 2022and2023,butdecidedagainst pursuingherOlympicdreamwhen sherealisedshewouldneedtofind $60,000,andstillmightnotbe selectedforthe2024Olympics.

“Therewasalotgoingon,but thefinalstrawwas‘it’sgoingto costthismuch’andIthought‘I can’tpaythatmuchtogotothe OlympicsandI’mnotgoingto askmyparentstopayitbecause it’snottheirjobtofundmysport thatmuch’.So,Ipulledout.I

can’tdothat.”Stillharbouring astrongdesiretocompeteat Olympiclevel,butrealisingartistic swimmingwasnotgoingtoget herthere,shelookedfor somethingnew.

“Myfriendsaidcomeand tryrowing,it’sanarmssport. So,Iwentanddidrowing andabsolutelyfellinloveand Ithought‘perfect,Ilovethis anyway’andyeah,Ijuststuck withitandnowI’mjustfully committedtothatasmuchasI canbe.”

Lookingbacktheremayhave beensomeconfusionbetween rowingandkayaking.

“[Rowing]isactuallyalllegsand atfirstIthought‘ohno,what haveIdone’,butIjustlovethe wholething.”

Shehasalsonotletherlackof heightputheroff.“I’mnottallbut anythingcanhappen,anything’s possible,sogoforgold.”

Rowingtoherdreams

Herrowingknowledgewasvery limitedandshedidn’trealiseNew Zealandhadsuchastronghistory inthesport,“whichiscrazybecause obviouslywearereallygoodatit,I knowthatnow”.

Themedalshewonatthe nationalswasintheintermediate

women’scoxedeightina compositeteammadeupof fourrowersfromTaurangaand therestfromŌamaru.

“Iwassoshocked,Iwasin disbelief.”

TheTaurangarowershad studiedthecrewstheywould becomingupagainst,trying toanalysehowwelltheywould do,butthecombinedcrew onlyhadashorttimetogether beforetheirfirstheat,andwere upagainstit.

“Ithinkwehadabouta20 minutepaddlearoundtotry andfeeleachotherandsee howeveryonemovesinthe boat,becauseeveryonehasa differenttechniqueatdifferent clubs,sowetriedtofigurethat

outandthenextdaywasrace daysoitwas‘ohwell,we’ll giveitacrack’.”

Futureplans

NextseasonSteinerwillbe competinginthehigherclub category.

“It’sahugestepup,butifI’m goingtogetanywherewith it,I’mgoingtohavetoreally crackdownespeciallywith mycardio.”

AtschoolshehasaLimited AuthoritytoTeach,soteachesin anareawherespecialistskillsare needed–inhercaseinart.

“Iloveit.Thekidsare absolutelywicked.Ithink myfavouritethingaboutit iscreatingrelationshipswith them.

KarlinaSteinerwithher silvermedalwonatthe NewZealandRowing Championships.

“Iheavilybelieve‘don’tjudge abookbyitscover’,youdon’t knowwhatchapteryouare walkingintoinsomeone’slife andsoit’samazingtoseesome ofthesekidscomingtoschool andputtingintheeffortthey putin.”

Shehasalsorediscoveredher owncreativity.“Throughthe wholesynchrothing,Ilostquite alotofdrivejusttodoanything anymoreandsogettingback hereandteachingkidsandalso teachingmyselfwhile I’mteachingthemhasbeena greatdriver.”

Shehopedtoeventuallygeta fullteachingdegreeandreturn toTePukeHighSchool.

AbusystarttotheyearforTePukefirefighters

Sixty-one – thatisthenumberofcallstheTe PukeVolunteerFireBrigadehavebeencalledto asofMarch3.

Thebusystartto2025hascontinuedwithemergency callsrunningatanaverageofoneperday,althoughwe seemtooftengettheminclumpsoftwoorthree. Sincemylastreportamonthago,wehaverespondedto 28calls–eightfalsealarms,sixvehiclecrashesincluding twoatTaurangaAirportwhereweweren’trequired,one covermovetoTauranga.

Wehadfourrescues,twomedicalassistsandsevenfires consistingoffourvegetationfires,onevehiclefireandtwo structurefiresoneweekapartonconsecutiveFridays.

Tragically,boththefiresledtotwofamilieseffectively

losingeverything.Inbothcasesthefirestookholdvery quicklyandbythetimeourthreelocalbrigadesarrived, thehomeswerealreadybeyondsaving.

Inthecaseofonewewereabletopreventthefire spreadingtoneighbouringhouses.

Theotherataruraladdresshadnootherbuildings nearby,buttheremotelocationmeantitwasabout25 minutesbeforethefirstfiretruckcouldarrive.

Thespeedatwhichfirecanspreadinahomeduetothe highfireloadingistrulyfrightening.

Imagine,ifyoucan,havingtostandbyandwatch everythingburn,oftenbeingleftwithnothingbutthe clothesyouarewearing.

Familiesthatsufferfiressuchasthiscanlosealltheir possessions,furniture,appliances,clothing,photos, familyheirlooms,vehiclesandtoys.

Itreallyisheartbreakingas,whilemuchofitcanbe replaced,photosanditemsofsentimentalvaluecannot. Youshouldalwaysmakedigitalcopiesofprecious photographicmemoriesandwhereverpossiblekeepyour contentsinsured.Manypeopleinsuretheirhomes,but don’tnecessarilyinsuretheircontentsastheyoftenfeel theywillnevermakeaclaim.

Fortunately,ourcommunitieshaveralliedaroundboth familiestotryandhelpthemthroughadevastatingtime intheirlives.

“Itwouldhavebeenamissiontogetbackinto that[GBsevensset-up],soIwaskeenonalittle change-up.Itmadesensetocomeoverto NewZealand.

“Whenyou’vehadafewinjuries,youfalloutof lovewithit,soIwaskeentofindthatloveforthe gameagain.I’veneverplayedclubrugbybefore,in Englandoranywhere,andIwaskeentogetback tograssrootsstuff.”

Defendingchampions

Ithadn’tescapedhisnoticethatTePukeSports arethedefendingBaywidepremierchampions.

“Theyareagoodgroupofboyswithareally excitingbacklineespecially,anditwillbecoolto beapartofthatandhopefullygobacktoback.”

HeisnostrangertoNewZealandandplayedin HamiltonintheWorldSevensSeries.

“I’vevisitedafairfewtimesandIloveit.”

Femistartedplayingrugbyaged11atDulwich CollegeandBeckenhamRFCandwentonto makehisPremiershipclubdebutforHarlequins Under-18sinNovember2017.

HehadtrialswiththeEnglandsevensset-up whilestillatschoolandwentstraightintothe Englandsquadafterhislastschoolexam. Throughhismother’sside,hequalifiedtoplay forScotland.

Becausehewasstillinhisteens,hewasableto switchtotheScottishsevenssquadandfromthere wonacontracttoplayfortheGreatBritainsevens teamthatcompetesontheworldcircuit.GB

narrowlymissedoutonqualification fortheParis2024Olympics.

“ButIwasinthecrowdwatching theGBgirlsandwatchingJazzplay,” Sofolarinsaid.

Afreshstart

Almoststartingafresh,hehasset himselfgoalsforthe2025season.

“Therootofitistoenjoyrugby again,that’sthemainone,andgetting thebodyrightwithallthesurgeries.

Asawingeryourelyonyourbodyand yourmobilityquitealot,soit’stryto gethamstringssortedandtheknees sortedandifthebodyfeelsgood,see whereIgowiththat.”

Whilehehasplayedsome15s rugby,sevenshasbeenhismainstay formanyyears.

“Allmyjuniorrugbywas15sinthe

UKandIplayedlastyearforLondon ScottishinthechampionshipandI’ve watchedalot,sotheunderstandingof thegamewon‘tbeastruggle,it’smore the80minutesversusthe14minutes [ofsevensgames]whichisthestruggle.

“You’veobviouslygottobefittoplay sevens,butit’stotallydifferent.”

Femiisconfidenthewillbereadyby thetimetheseasonrollsaroundon March22.

Hehasalsobeeninvolvedinthe Steamersdevelopmentprogramme andplayedfortheBayofPlenty Waspslastweekend.

“Themainfocusistheclubseason hereanditwouldbeprettycooltobe partofasuccessfulteamatgrassroots levelinwhatisarealcommunityclub. ThenifIfeelgoodandI’mplaying well,I’llseewhatelseisonthecardsin

termsofpushingforNPC–itwould beareallycoolcompetitiontoplayin. “It’scoolaswellthatloadsofthe kidsfromtheprimaryschoolcome andwatch.”

Astrongline-up

TePukeSportspremiercoachMartin AshsaidFemi’sarrivaladdedanother dimensiontowhatwasastrong backlinethatwaslargelyintactfrom 2024’spremiership-winningteam. “He’splayedalotofsevens,but it’sdifferentto15s.Theskillsetis different,buthe’squickandthere’sno substituteforpace.”
