Fourotherschoolswereineligibleforthefundedschool lunches,butwiththehelpofsponsorssuchasZespri, thecommunityandsupportfromKāhuiAkooTe Puke(communityoflearning)thetrustwasmakingan additional200mealsdailyforthosefourschools.
Thisallchangedatthebeginningofthisyearafterthe SchoolLunchCollectivewasawardedagovernment contractunderAssociateEducationMinisterandAct leaderDavidSeymour’scostsavingreforms.
Now,theTePuketruststill fundedlunches,butfor justtwoschoolsandonly untiltheendoftheyear.
TePukePrimarySchool andMaketūSchoolreceive 314mealsadayfromthe trust,underKaOraKa Ako,betweenthem.
Thedecreasednumbers throughthereforms essentiallyremovedthetrust abilitytoprovidefreemeals totheTePukeschoolsoutsid theprogramme-Fairhaven, TeRanga,Paengaroaand Pongakawa.
weactuallydeliverittotheschoolinalunchbox,pickup thelunchboxesandwashthem.Youorderonlineanditis cheaperthaniftheparentsweretogoandmakethatmeal, soitisawin-win.”
Aswordaboutthemealsgotout,Robinsonsaidparents atthegovernment-fundedschoolshavebeguntoaskif the$5mealscanbedeliveredtotheirchildrenatthose schools“becausetheirchildhasstoppedeating[thefunded meals]”.
Itisnottheonlyfeedbackshehadheardaboutthe revisedscheme.
“Wearegettingalotofcommentsfromparentswhohave kidsatKaOra,KaAkoschoolssaying‘wemissyouguys’. There’sastrongvoicefromthecommunitythatitisnot likeforlikeandthatissomethingthatwaspromisedthatit wouldbelikeforlike.“Therearesomerealissues,you talloverthemedia.”

Earlierthismonth,theNewZealand HeraldreportedthattheNewZealand Principals’Federationhadmadeaplea totheGovernmenttoreverttotheold schoollunchsystem,sayingthenew schemewasbesetwithissues. Whileacknowledgingearlyproblems mayhavebeendueto“teethingissues”, inalettertoDavidSeymourtheysaid eswerecontinuing.
ButgeneralmanagerChrissi Robinsonhasn’tthrowninthe toweljustyet.
Shesaidthetrusthadmadea decisiontosearchforwaysto stillgetfoodintothefournoneligibleschools.
IthassecuredsponsorshipfromS NZ,whichmeans30freemealsadayaresenttoFairhaven Schoolandfoodsuchasfruitandcrackersissenttoother schools.
“Wearestillsendingfreefoodtothoseunfundedschools forkids.It’sdefinitelynotthefullmealthatwewereable todowhenwehadmoneycominginfromthecontract, butit’stastyandhealthy,”saidRobinson.
Inanotherinitiativethetrusthasalsorolledoutpreordered$5mealsfor30studentsatFairhavenSchooland thetrustcanalsoprovidetheseforotherschoolsifthelevel ofinterestenablesthemtokeepthepricelow.

Shesaidthecommunicationissuehasnowbeenresolved.
“Ourmainissueitthatwe’vegotabeautifullooking three-weekmenu,butthat’snotwhatweget.Inthefirst coupleofweeks,wehadbutterchickenfourdaysinarow andsomethingelsetwodaysinarowandthekidsget hohawiththatveryquickly.”
Pre-madefrozenmealshadsometimesbeensubstituted, therehadbeenissueswiththespecialdietaryrequirement mealsattimesnotbeingsuitableandthepackagingon someofthemealshadmeltedwhenthemealswereheated.
“Sometimeswehavesomeboxesnotdelivered,sothey’ve stillgotquiteafewteethingissues,butforus,mostdays there’splentyoffoodandifsomeoneishungry,theyare
notgoingwithout.Weldonsaidthefoodnowonofferwas “nowherenearthequality”ofthatprovidedbyTheDaily. “Wemissthat.Wereallymissthefruit,andwereallymiss thelittlesnacksthatwehad.
“Andtheotherthingis,whenit’slocal,youcanjustcall up,talktoalocalpersonandit’sfixedthenextday.”
Shesaidthe$5mealsofferedbyTheDaily“look incredible”.
“Maybe,ifthemodelcanbethatitgoesbacktoalocal modelfor$5,youarestillsavingmoney,butit’shardto imagine[theGovernment]backtracking.”

AspokespersonfortheSchoolLunchCollective acknowledgedtherehadbeencasesofrepetitionofthe mealsdeliveredtosomeschools.
“WeareworkingwithourpartnersintheCollectiveto providemorevariation,”saidthespokesperson.
“TheSchoolLunchCollectivehasinvestigatedthe meltingpackagingandfoundthemealswereheatedfor 30minutesat180Cinaconvectionoven.Thishascaused thelunchestooverheatasconvectionovensarehotterthan conventionalovens.Goingforward,thesemealswillbe reheatedat160Cinaconvectionovenfor20-25minutes.
“Arecentdeliveryerrorsawthespecialdietarymealsfor TePukeIntermediatedeliveredtothewrongschool.We apologisetotheteachersandstudentsthisimpacted.We haveputadditionalprocessesinplace,includingadditional datachecks,tomitigateanyfuturedespatcherrors.”
Thespokespersonsaidthecollective’skitchenswere verifiedandauditedregularlybyindependentMPI accreditedspecialists,and“wefollowtheFoodActand FoodControlPlans”.

Thegrandfinaleof12regional competitionswilltakeplaceatManfeild ParkinFeildingon14-15Marchduring theCentralDistrictsFieldDays,putting finalists’nervesofsteeltothetestasthey gobucket-to-bucketforNewZealand’s ultimateexcavatoroperatoraccolade.
Theannualcompetitionchallenges thecountry’sbestoperatorstocomplete crowd-pleasingfeatslikeslamdunkinga basketball,preciselypouringacupoftea ordiggingprecisiontrenchesusingtheir excavators.Basicskillsaretestedtoo,with healthandsafetyawarenessandoperators’ abilitytoscopeandplanajobmakingup akeypartofthejudgingcriteria.

Pollardsaidoneofthebigtalking pointsthisyearwasthetrioofwomen competinginthefinal,withGeorgia LyfordfromCanterburyWestland,Lydia HillfromNelsonMarlboroughandTanya ClaxtonfromHawke’sBayEastCoast breakingnewgroundasthefirstfemale finalistsinthecompetition’s31-year history.
