Lol, just kidding! Nothing gets the blood boiling more than the Treaty of Waitangi and that’s from both sides of the document. We’ve even got a national day solely dedicated to grumbling about it. There are five million differen viewpoints on the Treaty of Waitangi. Now, if you’ve never read the Treaty, find a copy that freshly-minted Taurang councillor Andrew Hollis hasn’t burned already and read it. That shouldn’t take too long. I’m guessing lawyers didn’t get paid by the hour back then. What will take you an age to trawl through is every mention of the treaty in the 62 acts of Parliament that specifically refer to it The principals of the Treaty of Waitangi are so interwoven into our laws and legislation that it would take decades of legal wrangling and an awful lot of dollars in legal fees and compensation just to untangle it. That was a decision made in the 70s and this is not a single document anymore. The principals behind the Treaty of Waitangi are now woven into the fabric of our society. Imagine the complications if, after spending the last 40 years debating and settling legal problems created 170 years ago, or 100 years ago, we just decided to scrap the whole thing? We would need a tribunal just to sort it all out.
Big bucks
There has so far been just over 70 settlements with various iwi around the country with about 10 well-advanced but yet to be settled for various reasons. This has cost about $2.4 billion over 26 years. To put that into perspective, it would cover superannuation payments for two
months. It is one-eighths of one per cent of government spending over the past 25 years. Iwis that were economically irrelevant have lawyered up, fought their case and are now large corporations. For example, the second iwi to settle (The South Island’s Ngai Tahu, for $170 million in 1997) is now worth $1.65 billion. These commercial arms provide employment and feed their dividends into trusts that generally have a charter to deliver cultural, social and health benefits to members
Individual Maori benefit in direc proportion to the nous of their iwi, through the mana that is returned with the acknowledgement of their culture and the symbolic or actual return of their important places. Kiwis who don’t affiliat with an iwi and have no interest in that side of the country’s heritage, may feel like they don’t see much benefit at all Personally, I love my country’s unique bi-cultural heritage and culture and feel the investment is well worth it. It’s also the honourable thing to do. It is probably the single biggest thing that sets us apart from other countries. We are a beautiful, deeply thoughtful and successful country by most measures. Andrew has suggested the Treaty of Waitangi has been “going on too long”, “past its use by date” and “a joke”. This is no great secret. He made these views known during his campaign and was elected.
That’s a genuine view and obviously one that is held by many, many people.
It’s okay to talk!
Most of us are descended from countries and creeds with intense tribal rivalries. It’s human nature. The concept of making peace and owning the errors of previous generations is pretty unconventional. It was controversial at the time, but, as a whole, that’s what we decided to do and now it’s part of our nation’s identity. It is stuff we tend to talk about with people we think are in our “tribe” and who we think agree with us or have the same motivations. In NZ, it’s a case of don’t talk politics, religion or the Treaty. People feel aggrieved that they have to pay for old mistakes with new money. They resent being guilty by association of things they had no control over and take issue with special interest groups being given preferential treatment. There are tribes who are angry they got so little of their land and resources back. So when these opinions spill out into the public arena, it all gets a bit weird. The academics rail against the ignorance. The silent masses silently cheer the guy that gave them a voice. The arguments get slightly more heated in the offices and work sites and then eventually, it all simmers down and we all go back to our lives and our enclaves and our tribes. For those who think the Treaty of Waitangi should be thrown in the trash, burned or consigned to history, I don’t want to burst your bubble, but you might be a few decades too late on that one. The ship has well and truly sailed when it comes to the role the Treaty plays in New Zealand society. If you can’t work with it, then life in any kind of local or central government role is going to be quite difficult But I suspect, as long as mana and money are involved this issue will just keep bubbling away. daniel@thesun.co.nz

Little Blue penguins under threat
Long Weekend Sale A little blue penguin in its burrow.
The Mount Maunganui little blue penguin population appears to be in trouble, as chicks and eggs are disappearing. “It’s quite worrisome what’s happening,” says Western Bay Wildlife Trust Chairperson Melissa McLuskie, as she returns from monitoring the burrows. “This breeding season the penguins are not doing very well. “We’ve noticed a decline in the number of nesting birds and we’ve also found nests that have had eggs and chicks go missing.” In the past there has been issues with cats and dogs on Moturiki Island and Mauao, but the wildlife trust is not sure what is causing the little blue penguins population to be decimated this time. She says it could be a cat or a combination of preadtors. The wildlife trust is seeking funds to investigate it. Penguins are also having to deal with the continual dumping of rubbish and fishing lines
“Maia, an adult penguin named for her bravery, was sitting directly on top of two large shards of glass from broken bottles and a fishing line. That’s also where her chick was the week before.” That chick has now gone, probably taken by a predator. “I have found quite a few nests with plastic in them that are in areas where it would be very tricky for the plastic to be blown into, so it’s looking like the penguins are possibly using plastic to build their nests.” The season started off quite hopeful for the monitoring team. On August 27, the Western Bay Wildlife Trust reported the first penguin eggs of the season. Less than two months later and the newly hatched chicks have gone. The trust has a Department of Conservation permit to monitor the little blue penguins. “The research that we are doing is to try and help us understand the population status of our penguins and any threats that they are facing,” says Melissa. “ Apart from financially
supporting the trust through its Givealittle page, there are other ways people can help keep the penguins safe. Keeping cats indoors at night is an easy, helpful action. Owners should also micro-chip their cats so they are easily identifiable as domestic cats. Mount Maunganui residents can also get involved with backyard pest trapping through Predator Free Bay of Plenty, to reduce rat and mustelid numbers. So far there are no trapping groups based at the Mount. “Predator Free Bay of Plenty has targeted Tauranga suburb by suburb so we’re hoping to push that at the Mount too over the next little while,” says Melissa. The third way that people can help is to become more aware of the dog ban zones. “I find that almost every time I go nest monitoring I need to advise somebody who’s walking their dog right next to breeding areas,” says Melissa who says that near Moturiki is a main problem area.

Grace Road exit
The city side exit of Grace Road onto 15th Avenue is now permanently closed. Tauranga City Council says a concrete island has been poured to stop vehicles from exiting Grace Road onto 15th Avenue and to stop 15th Avenue traffic from turning right int Grace Road. “There is now only left turn access into Grace Road from 15th Avenue.” To highlight the change, ‘no exit’ signs have been placed at the 14th Avenue entry to Grace Road. All motorists must use Burrows Street or Fraser Street to access 15th Avenue from this side of town.
Temporary traffic chang
Throughout the cruise ship season there will be some temporary changes to the flow of traffic Salisbury Ave and The Mall in Mount Maunganui. To help manage extra activity when certain cruise ships arrive at the port, a section of Salisbury Avenue and The Mall will be turned into a oneway traffic lane The one-way section will start at Victoria Road and end at Prince Ave, with the traffic flowi along Salisbury Ave toward Prince Ave. Each closure will be monitored and will probably last a few hours and is only in place for some cruise ship arrivals.
Council employees strike
As Tauranga’s first council meeting since th election got underway on Thursday councillors were greeted with a picket line as city employees strike for two hours. Public Service Association members voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action on Tuesday. Tauranga City Council determines staff salaries using a system that pays them less than the national median rate for their profession and staff say they are fed up with it, says a statement released by PSA. “It seems ludicrous, but for our underpaid members the problem is all too real,” says PSA organiser Angela Collier.
Parking meters
With all the machinery and traffic control no removed from Durham Street, parking meters and signage has been installed. “There is no parking in Durham Lane and there is 60 minute parking on Durham Street,” says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson. “The windy weather this past week has certainly tested the new trees outside the University of Waikato. As a temporary measure, we are supporting the trees with strapping until the street furniture is all installed and the trees have had time to spread their roots.” The last small pieces of work will be undertaken without any road closures.

“It’s a spectacular specimen. “There’s nothing I don’t like about this orchid.” The Welcome Bay resident won the Grand Champion title at the Tauranga Orchid Show on Saturday, October 12. The extraordinarily large Dendrobium Nobile orchid was also awarded the Natalie Simmonds Trophy for Champion Specimen Plant. Many would think this orchid is so enormous, it would be impossible to move. But nothing stopped Craig from lugging it down to the show. The orchid has always lived outside, eventually growing out of its basket and attaching itself to a tree trunk. Craig had to chainsaw off the trunk and orchid and attach it to a metal stand to transport it to the show. “It took three of us to lift the orchid into a trailer. I don’t quite know how we did it,” Craig laughs. Dendrobium Nobile orchids are native to the highlands of Southeast Asia and the Himalayas. They produce a profusion of blooms right along the stems called ‘canes’ which store food and water. The Orchid Council of New Zealand observer at the show counted the canes and averaged the number of flowers per canes. He estimated Craig’s plant had close to 1000 blooms, all in pristine condition with more buds to open. “The plant is well established and had so many perfect flowers on it that were out at the show,” says Craig. The former Te Puke High School science and horticulture teacher has been an eager gardener since he was a kid. “It’s always been a passion of mine. “But my Dad wouldn’t let me in his garden.”
Craig Parson brings his giant, award-winning orchid back home to the garden. “He said I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a plant and a weed and would wreck the garden.” Craig currently has about 200 different orchid plants growing in his garden, all of which vary in size and colour. “You get success with this plant, that’s why I like them so much.” However, his wife Dot Parsons says he can’t grow too many as she needs enough room to grow her hostas. Craig joined the Tauranga Orchid Society four years ago, a group he says is great for getting inspiration from like-minded people. “We have about 86 members, and our youngest one is only 11. “He knows absolutely everything about the plant, he is on the internet researching orchids all the time.”

Green inventor smashes avo’ issue
Anamaya Taylor takes the time to explain her avocado ripening invention.
It all started with a passion for science and a mother’s burning frustration about unripe avocados. A Tauranga Intermediate student’s ‘Avocado Time Machine’ will be on display at the Museum of Transport and Technology this coming month as part of a science fair showcase. Anamaya Taylor, 13, won the best in fair award at the NIWA Bay of Plenty Science and Technology Fair after inventing an “ingenious” device to ripen avocados within a day. “I live in a small orchard area, we always have the problem if we pick avocados they are never ripe when we need them to be,” says Anamaya. “My mum was getting really annoyed, she was having to go out and buy avocados when we have two trees at home.” This prompted Anamaya to design the machine. She found out ethylene, an organic gas was the most efficient way to speed up the ripening process. After experimenting, Anamaya designed a prototype to ripen the fruit as quickly as possible. She modified a soda stream, an appliance normally used for carbonating water, to spray gas into a bag
holding an avocado. Why was she successful? Anamaya puts it down to communication. “I reached out to a wide range of companies who do the same thing. Zespri and Zion bounced ideas off me about how they do it - I basically came up with an idea combining the different suggestions from them.” She said it was “professor of bananas” who let her in on the secret about ripening fruit through using ethylene gas. Tracey Burton, a freshwater ecologist at NIWA, said Anamaya’s project paired thorough scientific investigation with ingenious product design. “Anamaya’s project is an excellent example of scientific rigour and innovation. The Avocado Time Machine was a worthy winner among many clever and original projects,” says Tracey. The exhibition at MOTAT will showcase 25 unique projects from students aged 11-18 years-old. Each display will outline the student’s investigation, methods, findings and next steps for development The top five entries from science fairs held in Auckland, Central Northland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty will be on display at MOTAT, in Auckalnd until Sunday, November 3.

Rise in Bay Of Plenty population Northland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty were the fastestgrowing regions in the year ended 30 June 2019, while the West Coast only had a small increase, Stats NZ says. Bay of Plenty had a growth of 2 per cent, which is greater than the national average of 1.6 per cent. Waikato had a growth of 2.1 per cent. “This year, net migration contributed two-thirds of New
Zealand’s population growth with natural increase contributing the remaining one-third,” population insights senior manager Brooke Theyers says. “Net migration remains the largest component of growth across most of New Zealand, and that reflect the national trend.” Net migration reflects bot people moving from one part of the country to another - internal migration, and people migrating in and out of New Zealand external migration.

Foreigners flee fines,
Richard Udy has been staying in his motorhome Stella Point this week and offers his opinion of freedom camping in the Bay of Plenty.
Every summer freedom campers cruise into the Bay of Plenty in search of surf, sun and scenic spots. For residents, this influx of freedom campers can mean overcrowded reserves and overused facilities. Tauranga City Council says there’s no reason to suggest that this year will be any quieter. “If the weather and the stars align, then it will be a very busy season,” says team leader regulation monitoring Stuart Goodman. Tauranga City Council has received an $183,000 grant from the Responsible Camping Working Group to help address some of the issues. The funding will go towards increased enforcement, more waste disposal facilities, additional cleaning and education around the bylaw. Stuart says the two main issues are people camping in prohibited locations and public defecation. Two main trouble spots are Marine Parade and The Mall.

“Whatever waste people in non-self-contained vehicles generate, it has to go somewhere. “Unfortunately, that sometimes results in people relieving themselves in public places which isn’t the kind of behaviour we want to see.” Between November 1, 2018, and 31 March 31, 2019, Tauranga City Council issued 602 freedom camping infringements. A large majority of these fines can be linked to international travellers. Council issues $200 fines to those that breach the freedom camping bylaw but Stu says there is no great deterrent for people to abide by the rules, as fines are waived once freedom campers leave the country. “If people were stopped at the airport when they had an outstanding fine, there would be much more compliance.” New Zealand Motor Caravan Association spokesperson James Imlach worries that all freedom campers are “tarred by the same brush”, even though the majority of New Zealanders who freedom camp

Signs make it clear what is expected from those who want to stay in the Bay’s parks and reserve. do so responsibly, and aren’t breaching bylaws. “A lot of the decisions that continue to restrict freedom camping provide fewer areas for New Zealanders to camp, in response to problems caused mostly by international visitors. “Our members feel like they are doing everything they can to camp responsibly.” He says these decisions have a far more significant impact on New Zealanders than international visitors. Tauranga City Council will be ramping up its monitoring from next month, patrolling high profile sites every night between 10pm and 5am. Stu says the council welcomes freedom campers but expects them to respect the city. Western Bay of Plenty District Council has received $133,032 from the Responsible Camping Working Group to manage freedom camping areas. Western Bay of Plenty District Council compliance and monitoring manager Alison Curtis says they take an education approach. Contractors go round in the evening and make sure campers understand the requirements. They go back at night, when they take a stricter approach. Alison says there has been an increase in freedom campers in the WBOP over the past three years. “We get more pressure around the popular reserves over peak season, you start to get a conflict between campers and other reserve users. “Monitoring is about making sure campers are in

the space where they need to be so they aren’t taking over reserves, which is the impression locals have had in the past.” Between December 3, 2018, and February 6, 2019, Western Bay of Plenty District Council issued five freedom camping infringements. James says a major problem for their members who freedom camp in Tauranga is designated areas not accommodating to larger vehicles. “A lot of our members feel that Tauranga is catering for the rental vehicles and New Zealanders in larger motorhomes are squeezed out a bit.” He also says these designated areas are often full of rental vehicles, leaving no room for members of the association. Richard Udy, who is a member of NZMCA, has been travelling around the country in his fully selfcontained motorhome for the past four years. He is currently freedom camping at Stella Point in Tauranga, which he says is a well set up spot with appropriate facilities. For Richard, responsible freedom camping is “not leaving rubbish around, taking care of the area and not creating a nuisance for noise”. He hasn’t had many issues in Tauranga, but sometimes it was difficult to find a spot to set u camp and rubbish facilities were lacking. “The spots here only take two or three vans at a Emma Houpt time.”

Art responds to audience
Tauranga Arts Festival volunteers are putting in the work to execute the events this year, including free light show Pou Rama. Photo: John Borren.
Desna says this show came to life after she was digging into ideas around creative inspiration from the environment. The Whakairo designs on the light posts signify cycles of creativity and connections to place. She hopes this show will encourage residents to take care of the land around them, due to rapid development in Tauranga over recent years. “Tauranga has been undergoing a lot of development for a long time now, the urban landscape has transformed majorly. “When we are developing these urban spaces, we need to be mindful of tangata whenua and their connection to place. “How do we hold space for that and be respectful of the environment we should be developing with rather than

bulldozing over the top of?” Pou Rama has travelled to Auckland, Wellington, Rotorua and Queenstown. Each light post in the show slowly cycles through a series of colour changes, accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Al Fraser. The pukaea-long wooden trumpet, and hue purahau - blown gourd, used in the soundtrack draw peoples attention to the light posts and grounds them to the land. The koauau rakau - wooden flute, and poiawhiowhio - swinging whistling gourd, provide light and guide the viewer’s eye to Ranginui. Desna reiterates the show is not a static artwork, as the soundtrack was only incorporated into Pou Rama this year. “We see room for growing the story around it, and we are trying to be responsive to our audiences.” StoryBox project manager Andrew Croot says they added music to the installation after
seeing how people interacted with the light posts in previous years. “We weren’t expecting people to touch and walk through and around the light posts. After seeing this we decided to make it a more immersive experience.” He says initially the show was created to show something of beauty that related to New Zealand culture, but Desna was the one to give the art meaning. “It’s about getting a reaction out of people, and hopefully they will understand that it is about people and our connection to the environment.” Desna, who is the chairperson of Nga Aho, has a background in a wide range of mediums. She says all her work is based in kaupapa Maori frameworks. “I work in advocacy for creating spaces for tangata whenua and mana whenua and nurturing Maori design creative practices.”

The man behind the name It probably says something about the man. When most council candidates were anxiously gnawing their nails, waiting for the STV algorithm to crunch the numbers on election weekend, one young contender with the unlikely name of Jako was at work, charity work. Jako, pronounced ‘yar-ko’, Jako Abrie. “I was inducting new volunteers to Under the Stars-Homeless in Tauranga when I got a call from an unknown number. I declined it.” Could have been bad career move because it was Tauranga City Council CEO Marty Grenfell ringing to congratulate him – Jako had made it on to council. But the homeless came first. “Our hard done by residents,” as he calls the homeless, and this “complex issue with no easy solutions” will remain a priority for the Under The Star trustee and new councillor. It’s Jako Abrie’s main driver, what made him choose to run. After all the trust can do the little things, but the council has much bigger levers. “The begging ban was not a good use of money – particularly going into a judicial review when you’ve had legal advice that you will more than likely lose the judicial review. You’re donating money to lawyers to fight a cause that’s not winnable.” So the first step he suggests, would be at the very least watering that bylaw down and redirecting the money for a better purpose. “I’d really like to see that money being used

to support our local homeless sector, whatever the council can do to support our sector that’s beneficial.” Incidentally New Zealand has the highest rate of homelessness in the OECD and the proportion of homeless people here is five times worse than in the USA. “Jako” may be an attention grabber name here in Tauranga but is apparently not an uncommon name in Bloemfontein, capital of South Africa’s Free State where the fledgling Tauranga City councillor was born 30 years ago. He arrived in Auckland aged eight and moved to Tauranga two years later. “Not sure whether my name has been a help or a hindrance. Previously I have been given advice to include my photo on CVs because otherwise people may look at my name, think I am a foreigner and not interview me.” The name obviously resonated with voters in the Otumoetai-Pyes Pa ward. He bought with him from Bloemfontein a passion for rugby. He still has it – a passion rather than talent. “I played casually and the pinnacle of my career was being selected for the Western Bay under 20s.” But he did his shoulder in and never got to wear the jersey. Jako Abrie was better in the classroom. He has a Bachelor of Engineering Degree with honours, also a Master of Engineering Management degree with honours, and he is a chartered professional engineer. New shade sails for Tauranga Special School An NZCT grant of $35,000 has fully funded the installation of shade sails over the school’s sensory playground and hydrotherapy pool. The previous shade sails had deteriorated badly and were no longer rain and UV proof. The school had also upgraded and enlarged the playground in 2015 which resulted in some areas not having shade. Wanting to ensure the health and safety of their students, the school reached out to NZCT for help. Jo Crean, a teacher at Tauranga Special School, says the grant will help

10 the school address health and safety needs and provide a visually more attractive environment for pupils. The hydrotherapy pool is unique to the school and provides numerous benefits to pupils. “There are lots of positive outcomes that hydrotherapy can provide for many of our students who have disabilities and chronic conditions,” says Jo. “This includes managing pain levels, working on their balance and improving strength, range of motion and aerobic capacity.
A love affair...
Doug Brown, at home with his beloved Model A Ford.
It’s like packing to take a newborn on a day trip - diapers, wipes, gripe water, rash cream. The works. Doug Brown’s ‘lovely blue’ 1930 Model A Ford pick-up isn’t too different. “If you are going on a run, you have to take bits.” All part of being a responsible parent. Spare spark plugs, points, condenser are high on Doug’s touring inventory. “Mark my words, things go wrong,” says the veteran with the vintage. ”Sometimes things happen. Fan belts break. You have to have another one.” The range at the average parts shop probably doesn’t run to Model A bits. And they say if you fail
to prepare, be prepared to fail. Doug Brown is a proud parent. His baby, the 1930 Tudor, is sitting out there in the dappled sunlight under the canopy of his enormous avocado trees up Thompson’s Track, up SH2. He’s banging on about the Bay of Plenty Vintage Car Club’s annual car show and swap meeting early next month. “We want good mention of that. It’s important.” One hundred cars on display at the club’s annual car show and swap meet – from a 1917 Dodge which we met in The Weekend Sun a fortnight ago to a late model Ferrari. Something for every petrol head, and food and motorised miniatures for the kids. Doug Brown was destined to have a vintage car. It just took him half a century. Doug was taken to

college in Honolulu riding in the rumble seat of a Model A– the fold away seat in the trunk. “I decided I was going to have one of those cars one day and I would ride up front.” And so there is now ‘Henry’. “Not rocket science,” says Doug. It was named for “that gnarly old bugger”, the American industrialist and business magnate who produced the common working man’s car and whose name is attached the grille. “Model A’s – never going out of fashion,” says Doug. “We love them, the most enduring car we have got.” And wonderfully simple. “We can work on them if we want. I can’t work on that diesel Toyota out there or a BMW. Wouldn’t have a clue. ” But if he wants to put a new head on Henry then he can order it from America one Friday, it arrives the next and it’s under the bonnet during the weekend. Doug’s partner Linda had a vintage car first. “She’s got a 1928 original Tudor sitting out in the shed.” Doug used to potter on it. “She would say: ‘what are you doing to my car?’ And I said: ‘Sweetheart, I am going to buy my own truck’ and I did.” He got tired of seeking permission to do something.
Sarge full of personality Meet two-year-old Sarge. He is a big goof ball looking for a new home. Sarge is here on a new journey to become part of a loving family. Sarge was found a little underweight and still has some weight to put on. Once he has, he will be a pretty big gentle giant. He is full of energy and would suit an active lifestyle with someone experienced with bull breeds or large/ dominant breeds so he gets the guidance and training he needs to round him into a well behaved adult. Sarge is becoming an expert jumping on his kennel, so he will also need a high fence to keep him safe. Sarge loves to make friends (four legged and two), run, and play! Most of all he loves attention so the bigger the family the better! Ref: 168182
No fancy gadgets and LED screens here. The old Model A shows the simplicity of a bygone era. “But please don’t say that.” Your secret is safe Doug. Only understanding, car types in relationships and reading this story will know. Brown hails from Illinois in the mid-west and still has the thick, trademark accent. “But I am a Kiwi,” he says defiantly. “I like New Zealand because it’s safe and Trump doesn’t live here. It has to be good.” Doug and Henry will be at the Vintage Car Club’s annual show and swap on Cliff Road from 7am to 2pm on Sunday, November 3. Doug will be on the gate, the white haired guy with a drawl, talking up Model A’s.

John Wright – a long way from home ual Gastric Band tual Gastric Virtual Gastric BandBand •
As a New Zealand opening batsman, he was gritty rather than spectacular.
And as a muso he has no pretentions. “At time as a cricketer, I probably batted slowly and people walked out. So if our concert all gets a bit slow and people have to leave, then so-be-it.” He’s dry as an Indian cricket Lesley Evans DipAdvHypno, MIHPS. They’ve been Wright’s music mentors. He had lot of help from Ryan. It’s pretty cool fun for me,” says the cricketer turned modern-day minstrel. “I am in my 60s now, and if it doesn’t work out, I will get over it.” Come on John, I am looking for you to give me a reason to buy a ticket. I am thinking a bit of country, a few cricket anecdotes from Wrighty, an IPA perhaps, priceless. “Over the years with playing and then coaching - much of it away from New Zealand - I never got to play in a band. Not that I’m a great musician.” Self-effacing again. “I sang in a choir when I was at school and I loved it.” So now with the Sou’Westers, he’s living out a dream. John Wright started writing songs as a bit of a hobby. He had mucked around with guitars for years. “I wasn’t such a good player so I started writing songs.” One of them goes like this. “Hotel rooms

John Wright is missing ‘Mot’ – his backyard of Motueka. “Over the years I don’t know how many Christmases I spent away from home playing or coaching. Because you are playing on Boxing Day it’s another Christmas away from home.” He was in Dakha in Bangladesh when he wrote the song. “That’s a long way from home.” As coach of India he had been away from home four Christmases in a row. “The previous year I had a Christmas dinner of fish and chips at a diner in d wntown
Melbourne. We were playing in the Boxing Day test next day.” That was 2003. Nowadays the Blackcaps have their WAGs – wives and girlfriends – in tow. “Probably. Things have move on since 2003.” Things have moved on, but the songs and the stories within endure. As a foil for his isolation and loneliness John Wright would write songs. “Friendly staff and a wake-up call, my laundry’s lost along with my thoughts, the mini bar has run away on me, the paintings hang like sleeping cats, they’re staring down and I am smiling back, and the loneliness creeps over me.” “So over the years, I have written this and that. Some is good and some bad.” An Evening with John Wright and The Sou’Westers is at Carrus Crystal Palace on the Tauranga Waterfront on Wednesday, from 8.30pm-9.45pm. Hunter Wells

LIMBO has been everywhere from London to Brussels and now the troupe is in Tauranga, delivering its brand of burlesque circus goodness. There’s sword swallowing, body bending, fir breathing, aerial acrobatics all alongside livecomposition led by Sxip Shirley. Heather is a sword swallower and fire-breather an says audience members need to come along with an open mind. “This show is so random, it’s like a big party on stage. It’s so loose and fun, and if you come not knowing what to expect you are going to have the best time.” Heather got into sword-swallowing when she was 17-years-old. “I was just quite pushy and incessant and I lived in New York where there’s Coney Island which is quite historic for having sideshows of the turn of the century. “It’s really the only place I could think of that a kid could just roll up and ask to get a job.” She says parents are not all that accepting until they know that it’s safe and you can actually make a career of it. Contortionist and acrobat Aurélien Oudot can bend his body in ways that are almost impossible to comprehend. Originally from Paris, Aurélien has been a professional circus artist for five years He has travelled to more than 10 different countries with LIMBO and says the best part of the job is discovering new cultures, new people and witnessing different energies from each audience.
Aurélien reckons contortion is a pretty safe practice. “Sometimes you block a nerve, get a bit dizzy, and you don’t know where you are but it’s occasional.” Hawkes Bay publication The Hook describes the show as a “rip-roaring 75 minutes of pure frenetic energy, grace, humour, skill and an exposition of the outer limits of what the human body can achieve.” Composer Sxip Shirley agrees, saying the crew is full of multi-talented artists. “The acrobats and incredible physical artists in the show actually play music too. It’s surprising - you will see this person doing an incredible thing on stage physically and then suddenly they are in the band.” In the live ensemble, Sxip uses foley devices as musical instruments. “Foley is the word for sound effects. It’s surprising sounds, things you haven’t heard before but it’s very catchy melodies. I call it music you can hold. “I have been doing this for around 30 years, I like watching this kind of theatre and I like to use my music to tie it all together. “To be a successful theatre composer, the artist is part of the composition. You’re successful when you’re fusing those things together.” Sxip’s says hands down, his favourite thing about New Zealand is the food. “I like eating the food. I went to NOURISHED. “I love eating the flesh of animals but I was totall satisfied with that meal. That was great “We were in Hawkes Bay, ate great asparagus. “You wouldn’t think you’d run a flag up a fl pole about asparagus but they do in Hawkes Bay for good reason.” LIMBO will be doing their thing on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, in Tauranga at Baycourt. Contains adult themes so recommended for ages 13-plus. For more information, visit Emma Houpt www.taurangafestival.co.nz

For the love of art A local art buying group has one rule – to only collect from and support Bay of Plenty creatives.
Maree Cleaver and Sarah Bacon are two members of a local art-buying group exhibiting its collection. Photo: Bruce Barnard.
AS SEEN ON TV!
Chrysalis Collection came to life in 2010, and since then has been slowly building up its shared collection of works. Works created by emerging and established artists from across the Bay, extending from Rotorua to Waihi. The group is hosting an exhibition of more than 30 works, from Saturday, until November 2 as part of the Tauranga Arts Festival. Chairperson Rhonda Hewlett says the positive feedback on the collection so far has been overwhelming. “We are just amateurs, but the collection is a labour of love and I think it shows. “A musician from New York involved with the festival said he had never been into a gallery that had so many diverse pieces that he loved. “Our minds were completely blown.” Chrysalis Collection has 15 members and the collection of artworks rotate around the group every four months. Rhonda describes the group as a “cobbled together group of colleagues, associates and friends who all love art for various reasons”.
She says the group only collects from artists with links to the BOP because “charity begins at home”. “We really like to look after our artists. “The life of an artist is fairly precarious at times, you have to conceive it, make it, then try and sell it. “They are all outstanding artists and we are so grateful to have them all a part of the collection.” Chrysalis Collection is lucky enough to meet many of the artists they purchase works from, which Rhonda says is the biggest thrill for her personally. “To meet the artists, and know the person is really the nirvana of collecting. “Without them, there’s no point to us. “So, it is the ultimate to support them and to know them.” Founding member Maree Cleaver says she simply could not pick a favourite work to choose from out of the collection. Rhonda agrees. The group will come to the end of their 10-year charter in 2020. Rhonda hopes they can pass the baton over to another group of individuals. “We think it would be such a shame to let it waft out into the ether. We really want to see our legacy continue,” says Rhonda. “It’s been really rewarding to see this come to fruition over the past nine years, we set out to do something and we did it,” adds Maree. The exhibition is being held at 20 Spring Street, Red Square in the Tauranga CBD. Entry is free. Works featured in the exhibition include those of Emma Prill, Rachel

Closure of Grace Rd Tauranga City Council has reached an important milestone in the 15th Avenue Improvements project with the permanent closure of the city side exit of Grace Road onto 15th Avenue. A concrete island has been poured to stop vehicles from exiting Grace Road onto 15th Avenue and to stop 15th Avenue traffic from turning right into Grace Road. There is now only left turn access into Grace Road from 15th Avenue. To highlight the change, ‘no exit’ signs have been placed at the 14th Avenue entry to Grace Road. All motorists must use Burrows Street or Fraser Street to access 15th Avenue from this side of town. The changes at the Grace Road intersection will contribute to improving the level of service for people travelling along 15th Avenue towards Maungatapu/Welcome Bay in the afternoon peak.
Putting their best foot forward Tauranga Special School students will be dancing in front of thousands for the first time next week at the Pasifika Festival in the Bay. A group of 33 students ranging in age from 5-18 will be braving the crowds and performing Samoan dances Siva and Sasa. “The school coming on board and wanting to be part of the festival is how we are as Pacific Island people - all-inclusive. “It’s awesome they are getting involved,” says event manager Melanie Cottingham. Excitement and nerves bounce around the classroom where the group are rehearsing, students saying they are more than ready to take the stage. “I am a little bit nervous about standing up on stage and watching all my family and friends, but I’m excited,” says intermediate level student Emelia. Pasifika Festival in the Bay has been running for five years now, celebrating the range of unique cultures that make up the Pacific Islands Tauranga Special School teacher Cat Banks is over the moon that they are performing in the festival for the first time this year. “We want to be part of the community, and it’s really exciting to be able to do that in a way that gives us a real sense of belonging.” She says the school’s involvement is essential in educating students about Pasifika culture “It’s so important the Pasifika students know about their own culture, and other students need to have that understanding as well.”
The Hikurangi Serviced Apartments FROM JUST $500,000
Tauranga Special School students rehearsing for their performance at Pasifika Festival in the Bay next week. Students have been practising their moves for 10 weeks now, and Cat says those involved have “really come to the party”. About 25 other school groups will be performing alongside Tauranga Special School at the volunteer-run festival. Organisers estimate there will be about 2000 performers dancing. Groups will represent nations from all over the Pacific including Samoa, Niue, Tonga, Kiribati, Cook Island and Fiji. “This festival is for our kids,” says Melanie. “Our children need to know what the Pacific Islands are all about, and if they are from there they need to know
about their dance, food, culture and how things work. “Us Pacific Islanders are sprinkled around the Bay of Plenty, so it’s nice for us to come together to celebrate.” “It’s just a really happy time - it’s loud, we laugh and we don’t have to go to Auckland to eat our food.” The festival, hosted by Brookfield School, is taking place on Wednesday, October 30, from 9am-2.30pm at Sydenham Botanic Park. Entry is free. For more information, visit: www.facebook.com/PasifikaBOP/ Emma Houpt

Guy Fawkes: Would locals support a fireworks ban? across the country over Next Saturday, fireworks will go on sale creeping up quickly, The a four day period. With Guy Fawkes ranga asking residents Weekend Sun took to the streets of Tau of fireworks and if what their thoughts are on personal use l explosives. they would support a ban of the colourfu
Pam Watson, Mount Maunganui
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? I don’t like it because there are so many people that get burned every year. People aren’t always responsible with fireworks, and I don’t like that we can go and just buy them. Would you support a ban? I would – it’s dangerous. But as for public displays, I am all for it, it is a lot of fun. I love it. It needs to be controlled.
Peter De Graaf, Mount Maunganui
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? Too many animals get traumatised and too many accidents happen with uncontrolled fireworks. Fireworks go off all the time at all hours of the ni ht, and it just stops people from sleeping. Would you support a ban? I would support a ban, like the public fireworks display
Todd Evans, Mount Maunganui
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? I think it’s great, people need to celebrate. Would you support a ban? Not particularly, if people are responsible with it and have fun then I am okay with that. Sometimes people light them off too many days after Guy Fawkes. People do need to move on from doing that.
Louise Swainson, Papamoa
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? That’s a tricky one, we love it for the kid factor. The small ones to have in our back yard like the sprinklers. But I am not a fan of the massive ones that get sold because they scare my daughter. I can’t say yes and I can’t say no, but the sprinklers are fun for the kid’s factor. Would you support a ban? I probably would support it, yes, but my husband would be devastated because he loves them. He’s the guy who will stock up on heaps just in case they don’t sell them next year.
Elle Doherty, Mount Maunganui
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? It should be only like public events, instead of people being able to buy them personally. They put on a better show and it’s easier and safer for animals and children. Would you support a ban? I don’t wanna be like the negative Nancy, I would like to see more regulation though, not a complete ban.
Chloe Carter, Brookfiel
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? Our dog hates them, but as long as people aren’t taking the piss doing it late at night then I am okay with it. Would you support a ban? Not banned, but more restrictions. Everyone is always going to ruin it for someone else but some people do it properly.
Luke McKay, Ngaruawahia
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? It’s good. It’s a fun thing to do with the family. Would you support a ban? Nah. The fun police shut down a lot of things in this day and age. It’s nice to just have something you can have some fun with. The world is so PC now and there are so many rules around everything it’s getting a bit lame. Keep the firew rks for sure.
Andrea Ainsworth, Arataki
What are your thoughts on personal sale fi eworks? It’s all a bit of fun, I am okay with it. It’s an excuse to celebrate, have fun and be social. Would you support a ban? No, it needs to be regulated, but it doesn’t need to be banned. I don’t have any concerns with the fireworks being sold at the moment

Bright idea takes advantage of rare subsidy Have you noticed something different about your street recently? Allow me to shed some light. Council is upgrading its 7000 streetlights to LED. The biggest change since electric streetlights were switched on in 1915. The upgrade will save 2GWh of power annually. That’s the equivalent of running Huntly Power Station at full-noise for two hours or the output of your average nuclear reactor over the same period. Council received a one-time, use-it-orlose-it, 85 per cent subsidy from NZTA so it makes financial sense for our ratepayers to
do the upgrade now. Aside from the environmental and power saving benefits, the new lights will require significantly less ongoing maintenance. They’re also directed at illuminating the road and not everything else, so they won’t be shining directly into your bedroom at night! Another advantage is that individual streetlights can be brightened or dimmed to suit the neighbourhood. The downside? Some of our residents have lost ornamental light fittings from thei subdivisions. This was done due to cost; however, Council didn’t consult on whether
THE N I L E V TR A
our ratepayers might have been prepared to pay a little more to retain these. This was largely due to the very short time Council had to make the decision, but I think it’s also a perfect example of Council’s attitude that needs to change. We’ve got to stop doing things to our residents and start doing things with our residents! On a positive note, I found out that Council doesn’t pay when streetlights malfunction and burn during the day because we only pay a fixed charge for night hours

They’re good for the bees and butterflies, some are great to eat and of course, they’re wonderful to pick and enjoy indoors. The most Southern naturist club in the world is in Invercargill and the oldest club in New Zealand is in Auckland, celebrating more than 70 years.
Where’s all the extra police they promised? The Government has overseen a rapid increase in the number of people joining gangs since it took office, but it’s no closer to achieving its promise of 1800 extra police on the beat. The Prime Minister promised New Zealanders her Government would deliver 1800 additional police officers to the force. That is additional recruitment, accounting for police officers who leave each year. The Government has been clear on this promise and it has been repeated numerous times by Police Minister Stuart Nash as well. With gang membership on the rise and serious crime increasing, having these extra cops in our community is
incredibly important. But after two years, the Government has only managed to add 716. There’s no way it can somehow add a further 1000 cops in less than a year. Now Stuart Nash is simply counting every person who has been through the Police college and ignoring the many hundreds of experienced police officers who have resigned over the past two years. It doesn’t matter what the Government says, what new excuse it comes up with. The Prime Minister promised the New Zealand public 1800 additional police officers and she will fail to deliver on that promise. It doesn’t have a plan when it

comes to law and order. In fact, the only policy it does have is to reduce the number of people in prisons, but it has no plan to reduce crime first Now more than ever it should be focused on ensuring there are enough police officers to stop criminals offending. It is a slap in the face to the Kiwis who can see more gang members in their communities, but not enough Police on the streets to stop criminals offending. National has always been the party of law and order. We’re currently undertaking the largest policy development process by an Opposition ever, and when we earn the right to govern 2020, we’ll be ready.

Silence is golden at this film festival The IYSFF NZ National Awards 2018 Top 12 finalists. Photo: Baycourt/Brydie Photography.
Tauranga Girls’ College will have a massive presence at the upcoming International Youth Silent Film Festival New Zealand National Awards Final with six students making it into this year’s Top 12. Caitlin Robb (Courage), Elena Broadfoot and Courtney Thomas (Cut and Paste), Rebecca Eggersglusz (Entanglement), Daryn Bernice Saludez (The One Who Killed the One I Loved) and Lea Foxcroft (Young George) will all be celebrated at the IYSFF NZ National Awards Final at Baycourt Community & Arts Centre on Friday, November 8, from 7.30pm.
Three-minute film
The IYSFF is an international filmmaking competition that challenges filmmakers, aged 20 and under from the United States, Australia, The Middle
East and Aotearoa, to create a three-minute silent film set to one of 10 musical scores composed especially for the festival.
Third finals in a ro
Also making it into the Top 12 is former Tauranga Girls’ College and current Massey University student Jiyun Jeong (Trail). This will Jiyun’s third finals appearance – in 2016 she and fellow Tauranga Girls’ alumni Nathalia Luna won second with their film The Other Side of the Mirror, while in 2017 Jiyun took out first place with her film Tonight. This year 27 entries met the IYSFF’s strict criteria of rules and accepted for judging. Following jury panel deliberations, the Top 12 selected films have now been submitted to 2019 celebrity judges, actor Bree Peters (Fresh Eggs, Shortland Street, Find me a Maori Bride) and Film Bay of Plenty CEO Anton Steel, for final judging. Baycourt has hosted the IYSFF competition since 2016 and
manager James Wilson said picking this year’s Top 12 films was once again a difficult task “I’m constantly startled by the talent, imagination and ambition that is displayed in the short silent films that we receive each year, and 2019 is definitely no exception.”
International fame
The Top 12 IYSFF NZ 2019 finalists will compete for a cash prize pool of $6500 across nine category awards, which includes $2000 for the first place winner, $1500 for second place, $1000 for third place, plus the chance to represent Aotearoa at the IYSFF International Awards 2020 held at Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon, US. The IYSFF NZ National Awards Final is on at Baycourt Community & Arts Centre Addison Theatre in Tauranga on Friday, November 8, from 7.30pm. Achieving a smoke-free New Zealand by 2025

Parliament is considering laws to regulate the use of vapes and other non-burnt tobacco or nicotine products.

These laws will shape our health budget in coming decades so it is important that we get them right. The current bill about to be introduced into Parliament is a one-off opportunity to make the next step towards Smokefree 2025. The most persuasive argument in favour of getting our legislation right comes from ASH, Action for Smokefree 2025. They have released their Surge Strategy for Smokefree 2025, highlighting the opportunities and
threats that come with legislating for these products. The ASH found that Smokefree tobacco products such as e-cigarettes are a big opportunity to reduce the health, social and economic harms from smoking. Helping smokers move from burnt tobacco to substitutes is something that has received subsidies in the past, for products like nicotine patches and gum. We should treat vapes and similar products in the same way as we treat patches and gum, as a tool for smoking cessation. Passing legislation through Parliament is not easy. We get one chance at it. With something as
important as smoking cessation we need to take careful note of what ASH is saying, and pass laws that treat much less harmful products completely differently to cigarettes. There are risks associated with vaping. These risks, according to Public Health England, are 95 per cent less than smoking burnt tobacco, so are risks worth taking. ASH’s final point highlights the need for pragmatism to get New Zealand to be Smokefree in 2025.

Kulim Park upgrade consultation Tauranga City Council is hosting a consultation this Saturday asking residents for feedback on the latest version of the Kulim Park upgrade design concept. This is the third phase of consultation, and finalisation of design and council approval is set to take place at the end of this year. The consultation will be at Kulim Park, 10.30am-1.30pm on October 26. The purpose of the project is to reinstate coastal edge, resolve drainage issues, manage vehicle access, protect vegetation, create safe places to play and connect people to the history of the area. The council website states that the most frequent feedback they got from park users during the pre-concept engagement was that vehicle access in the park
needs to be restricted. The latest version of concept plan shows one area dedicated to parking at the back edge of the park and another reinforced car park at the headland area. “Removing vehicle access from the middle of the park frees up significant areas of open space which is safer for people, better for the environment, maintains large areas for people to enjoy and allows for additional uses including the shared pathway and more effective drainage,” the council website states. “The intention of the design is to maintain and enhance the existing character of a coastal neighbourhood park defined by the beach, large areas of open lawn and mature specimen trees.” Construction is set to commence in Feburary and March next year.
Contractors deposit new sand onto Kulim Park beach to improve the beach experience.
Big thumbs up to all local election candidates Flowers are blooming and after dinner beach walks are starting. I can almost taste the upcoming summer sunshine. While I’m working hard around the Bay and will be continuing my Parliament duties until the week before Christmas, I am certainly looking forward to the sunshine! Firstly to everyone who ran for local government, whatever the result, my humble thanks for your desire to serve your community and step up to a very big task. Lifting your head high above the parapet is brave and campaigning
is long, hard work. Thank you for your dedication and desire to make a difference. In particular, congratulations to Steve Morris who was re-elected, and our new ward councillor Dawn Kiddie. A genuine thank you to councillor Leanne Brown, who did not seek re-election, for her service to our community. I worked closely with her during my time managing
the Tauranga Women’s Refuge. In government we’ve been making moves to tackle New Zealand’s long-term challenges. A few things I am particularly proud of is making big investments in mental health so people can get help at their local GP, funding for new cancer treatment equipment like radiation machines and new cancer drugs, Increased school funding so parents don’t have to pay for school donations or NCEA fees, banning offshore housing speculators and stopping the sell-off of state houses. After nine years of neglect too many issues were ignored.

Greenfield MC, a licensed medicinal cannabis importer and distributor in Australia, and Canadian licensed cannabis producer Emerald Plants Heath Source have entered a joint venture with Taurangabased Wepiha Health Co. Wepiha Health Co is a newly-created entity led by Maori clinical researchers and academics, agriculturalists and leading pharmacists, which is already engaged in agriculture and health and pharmaceutical services. Co-founders are Dr Anna Rolleston, a senior research fellow at the University of Auckland and University of Waikato, and a director at Tauranga’s
The Centre for Health Ltd; and Rush Wepiha, an internationally recognised indigenous youth mentor who focuses on development of better healthcare and medical education in rural and/or Maori communities.
Cultivation operation
The venture is being seed funded by Greenfield MC Global, and the venture’s representatives are meeting with landowners as it decides where to base a cultivation operation and research facility. Wepiha Health Co co-founder and community cultural relations officer Rush Wepiha says they’re particularly interested in the Tauranga region. “Our company is named after myself and Anna’s great-greatgrandfather Wepiha. “We named the company after him because he had a deep connection to the land and he’s passed it down to us. “Our family has cultivated all types of fruit and vegetables for generations and generations.”

Tagging is inserting a small non-invasive serial numbered metal or plastic dart into the flesh of a fish next to its dorsal fin. The fish is photographed and the details are recorded (tag number, length, species, GPS location etc.) The fish is then released alive, carefully into the water to carry on with its normal life. The tagging is carried out quickly and methodically so that there is little or no stress to the fish. This ensures a better survival rate and little or no change in the behaviour of the fish The Tindale Marine Research Charitable Trust was formed to share some of the insights and behind the scenes science on marine species, ecosystems and marine environment that Scott and Sue Tindale have been involved in. They will be selling tagging kits at the show. To learn more about what the trust does and how you can get involved, visit their stand or: www.tindaleresearch.org.nz

Is it your time to give vegetarianism a try? NZ Vegetarian Society spokesperson Philip McKibbin says vegetarianism can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age, culture, or religion. Wellplanned vegetarian and vegan diets are suitable for every stage of life, and vegetarian cuisine can be found everywhere.
October is Vegetarian Awareness Month and the NZ Vegetarian Society is highlighting vegetarian meals from around the world. You will find delicious meal ideas on the NZ Vegetarian Society website. Philip says that adopting a vegetarian diet can satisfy diverse preferences. "Many people want food that’s familiar. The rise of ‘alternative proteins’ and ‘fake meats’ has made it really easy to switch to a plant-based
diet. These days, you can find foods that are vegetarian and vegan, without compromising familiarity,” he says. "Vegetarianism is also great for those who love to experiment and try new things. It can be really fun to experiment with new ingredients, and to re-invent meals that you’re familiar with using ingredients that you might not have considered using before switching to vegetarianism." He also says that vegetarian diets are usually a lot healthier than non-vegetarian diets. "Most people find that vegetarianism encourages them to be more mindful, ensuring that their meals are not only tasty, but healthy and sustaining as well."

Television encourages next generation of Kiwi DIYers It seems television shows such as The Block are encouraging a new generation of Kiwis to give DIY a go. And while we are increasingly looking online for guidance when it comes to completing projects at home, we still value support and advice from our local hardware stores. In a study released by Canstar Blue, which finds Mitre 10 as New Zealand’s favourite hardware store, 88 per cent of respondents have completed DIY projects with nearly a quarter saying they had been inspired to try DIY after watching a show on television. Nearly half of those surveyed admitted referring to online ‘how to’ tutorials to learn how to tackle that job around the house. The study saw Mitre 10 emerge as New Zealand’s top hardware store in terms of customer satisfaction. Survey respondents awarded the national hardware retailer five-star ratings for service and advice, range of brands, range of products and overall satisfaction. Kiwis are pretty pleased with their efforts around the house too. A total of 79 per cent of respondents reported their DIY efforts as a success, with only 4 per cent of respondents having to call in experts to finish the job

When it comes to motivation, saving money drove 78 per cent of respondents to pick up a hammer, with 60 per cent also admitting to enjoying the experience. "Our research shows the level of service and advice offered by DIY stores is the most important driver of customer satisfaction," says general manager Canstar New Zealand, Jose George. Just under a third of respondents said they valued service and advice the most, with 30 per cent citing value for money as their key driver of satisfaction. Mitre 10 general manager marketing Jules Lloyd-Jones says the award is further recognition for the customer service Mitre 10 is known for. "We’re really proud to have received this recognition from our customers. Customer satisfaction encompasses so many things, so this is an award that acknowledges the work of every member of the Mitre 10 team, from our frontline customer service teams right through to our category teams that ensure we have the right products on the shelves." But it’s not just DIYers frequenting the aisles of their local hardware stores. Nearly two thirds of respondents said that they visit hardware stores for nonDIY items such as containers, storage, home and garden wares, and plants. "This indicates our DIY stores are responding to the increasing number of Kiwis renting or living in smaller units by catering to those looking to undertake general home improvements alongside traditional constructionrelated jobs," says Jose.
Construction industry supports new guidelines The building and construction sector welcomes the recent announcement by Ministers Twyford and Salesa of the revised Construction Procurement Guidelines. The guidelines acknowledge and address critical issues. The construction sector has been calling for fairer contract terms and better allocation of risk. “For a number of years, construction contractors have been asking for change in how some Government agencies
procure,” says Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly. “We strongly support the release of the guidelines, which have the potential to significantly improve the quality and consistency of how Government construction projects are delivered. “It’s unsustainable for Government agencies to drive contract prices down and pass an unfair amount of risk onto the contractor. “All this does is create an adversarial relationship and a culture of mistrust between parties, as well as leaving contractors potentially financially vulnerable. These guidelines
provide an opportunity to reset this culture by having agencies and contractors working more collaboratively to achieve fairer contract and risk allocations when delivering projects,” says David. “We are pleased to see the Government take another important step towards improving the health and vitality of the sector. This is a good initiative, showing the Government is committed to change as part of the Construction Sector Accord. “This isn’t just about improving the sector’s health. “A vibrant building and construction sector is the infrastructure that underpins the New Zealand economy.”

Dashboard tracks housing progress The Government’s Housing Dashboard released earlier this week confirms record numbers of state houses are under construction and shows the Government build programme is gaining momentum. "After nine years of inaction and a hands-off attitude from the previous government we’re starting to see things move in the right direction for housing," says Housing Minister Megan Woods. The September dashboard shows that in the previous month, 3402 homes are under construction in the Government build programme. There were also 80 new public houses (emergency
housing) built and more than 2300 currently under construction. There were 1340 homes bought using the First Home Grant, 61 KiwiBuild homes sold - driven by demand for the popular Monark and Fraser Ave developments and 967 households are engaged in Housing First "We’ve got more than 2300 public houses currently being built,” says Megan. “If the previous government had been building at that pace, rather than selling state houses off, we wouldn’t even have a waiting list. "We’re also seeing a year-on-year increase in the number of consents issued with 35,658 in the last 12 months. That’s an increase of 8.8 per cent on last year. "We made a commitment
when we reset the KiwiBuild programme that we would deliver a monthly dashboard of housing measures to show New Zealanders how we’re tracking. This dashboard sets the baseline for the Government build programme,” says Megan. "As I said at the time of the reset, some statistics won’t always improve
month-on-month and we’ll be upfront about those in this monthly dashboard. "Overall we’re starting to make good progress with the Government build programme gathering momentum but the size of the housing issues we inherited from the previous government means there is still plenty to do,” she says.

Lowered interest rate for first home loans Simplicity, New Zealand’s fastest-growing KiwiSaver plan, has announced it would provide New Zealand’s lowest cost home loans to Simplicity’s first home buyers. Simplicity KiwiSaver members buying their first home will be eligible for floating rate first home loan at 2.95 per cent p.a. interest; more than one per cent lower than competitors. The loans have no break or penalty fees and members can repay any or all of the mortgage
at any time, at no extra cost. Loans will be for up to 80 per cent of the value of a first home, as long as repayments do not exceed 30 per cent of combined after-tax income. While all first home loans will be at a floating rate, members will be given at least three months’ notice if interest rates rise. This gives borrowers time to adjust to the new rates or switch providers. By lending money instead of placing it on deposit at the banks, Simplicity also expects to achieve higher investment returns for its KiwiSaver and Investment fund members.

Discovery leads to greater understanding of Alzheimer's Otago scientists have made an important discovery in understanding the role a particular protein plays to impair memory in Alzheimer’s disease, which could lead to more effective treatment in future.

The overproduction of this protein may be one of the reasons behind the disease-

Significant growth opportunities for NZ kiwifruit in US market
New Zealand is to fully capitalise on this opportunity, according to California-based Rabo Research senior analyst Roland Fumasi. Presenting to kiwifruit growers across New Zealand via a recent webinar, Roland said that while kiwifruit was not yet a ‘big deal’ in the US market, demand for the product was undoubtedly shifting in the right direction. "At a quarter of a kilogram per capita each year, kiwifruit consumption in the US falls a long way behind some of the more popular fruits like strawberries which are at close to four kilograms per capita each year," he says. "However, we have seen good growth in kiwifruit consumption in recent years and it is now one of the more rapidly-growing products in the US fruit and nut space." Roland says there is a number of factors driving increased demand, including greater awareness of the health benefits of kiwifruit and the emergence of the kiwifruit gold variety. He says New Zealand kiwifruit exports played a vital role in ensuring year-round supply of kiwifruit to the US market and that the high quality of New Zealand kiwifruit had helped establish a price

Learning to fall in love with the process Some people are very goal oriented, and others are more about the process. Too often though, we think our goals are all about the result. We see success as an event that can be achieved and completed. Many people see health as an event: “If I just lose 20 pounds, then I’ll be in shape,” or entrepreneurship as an event: “If we could get our business featured in the best magazines and websites, then we’d be set”. But if you look at the people who are consistently
achieving their goals, you start to realise that it’s not the events or the results that make them different. It’s their commitment to the process. They fall in love with the daily practice, not the individual event. Focusing on the process is what will allow you to enjoy the results anyway. If you want to be a great writer, then having a best-selling book is wonderful. But the only way to reach that result is to fall in love with the process of writing.
If you want the world to know about your business, then it would be great to be featured in the best magazines and websites. But the only way to reach that result is to fall in love with the process of marketing. James Clear says: “fall in love with repetition and practice. Fall in love with the process.” Remember: “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”. (Matthew 6:33). Stephen Whitwell, O2 Church, Tauranga.

Finding the positives I work two days a week as a builder to complement my role of youth Pastor at the Orchard Church. While working away outdoors I have heard ads on the radio lately promoting ways to improve mental health. One stated that a simple way to help was to think of the positives in your life rather than the negatives. I was stoked to hear this, but I was also upset. I was reminded of the state of our mental health in New Zealand, particularly seen in our youth suicide rates. I know that positive thinking can help but New Zealanders need more. We need to focus on the ultimate positive, focus on the source where all good and perfect things come from. For some people, the positives they focus on in this life are few and can often be fleeting and temporary. The positives we find in the one true God, the God of the Bible, are perfect and they are infinite. Understanding who God is and what He’s done for us, for you, through His son Jesus gives you a positive hope for the future and it gives you a positive purpose for now! As the Apostle Paul said, ‘Don’t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ Mike Johnston, youth pastor, The Orchard Church

Reputation remains intact Switching up the jail system The building of a replica of Captain James Cook's ship Endeavour is a fitting tribute to the great man. Despite the recent fake news, Captain Cook’s reputation as a cartographer, hydrographer and arguably the greatest navigator of all time remains intact. Modern science and technology, which all countries and cultures are happy to embrace today, owe much to people like Cook. R Rimmer, Tauranga.

Denial of free speech In my opinion the bro-hou over comments made by an elected councillor are the result of the denial of 'free speech' that is the wet blanket now thrown over society by the Race Relations Commissioner. It is not a crime for those who seriously research New Zealand history to hold differing views and to verbalize what they know. Mr Mikaere and other activists are constantly labelling any difference of historical opinion as 'racism'. I do not believe the Mayor elect is correct when he claims local government has a 'legal duty to have a partnership with iwi'. LGA 14 (1) (d) Principles Relating to Local Authorities does not speak of 'partnership'. M Anderson, Pyes Pa.
Whistleblower bravery ‘A country fit for criminals’ or words to that effect come to mind after hearing our Justice Minister Andrew Little looking to reduce jail sentences by one third for those manufacturing meth commercially. Why do we not insert full page ads inviting applications for meth manufacture. “Be in quick because you may miss out. Great returns, minimal risk.” For goodness sake New Zealand wake up to this socialist experiment. While I agree with lesser jail time it has got to be linked with stronger consequences for damaging behaviour, in the form of corporal punishment. Various degrees of caning will significantly lower our criminal population numbers. The countries that do corporal punishment have communities that thrive, are healthy and safe. D Morris, Tauranga.
I wish to commend Sir Michael Cullen on his bravery in exposing that the government’s surplus is only on paper and not in cash. I hope they do not resort to borrowing more money to squander. If only Sir Michael Cullen could be persuaded to return as Finance Minister and review the interest rate, even if only for the pensioners to enable them to continue to afford to live in their own homes. B Young, Tauranga.
Who is to blame? It is ridiculous to suggest that the activities of Maori gangs and the millions of dollars of drug money being secured by them is any more than the natural outcome of Captain Cook’s bloody rampaging around the Pacific and the subsequent dastardly oppression of colonisation. B Johnson, Omokoroa.

Stop the bucket shaking A great many people make themselves available to help raise funds for a great many charities in New Zealand all year round. It is time that this Government stopped the practice of stealing funds urgently needed by the blind which was run recently. To call St John Ambulance a charity is a farce and is just stealing from the needy. Many millions have been spent by Labour trying to prop up a raft of useless causes, while the needy are losing out on about $50-plus million. It is timely to tell this Government to pay for its own essential
services with a national health system for all New Zealanders whether they be pink, red, black, or tartan. No special deals for any group. An ambulance leader in Wellington made comment that she was sick of ‘shaking the bucket’ to get funds and resigned. Ambulance services should be fully funded by Government. Jacinda’s MPs do not have to shake any bucket to get paid, why should we? R Chamberlain, Tauranga.
Grateful for a strong leader I’m pleased to see our new mayor is not going to be swayed by racial hysteria with a knee jerk reaction and have Andrew Hollis stand down. These are the sort of people we need in Council: strong and not afraid to voice an opinion on things that concern our fair city. It would be unfair and unjust to have Mr Hollis removed from Council for a few remarks that do not attack any one person, but it seems to me he was criticising a system, rather than any one race. Let him stay and see how he performs, before condemning him. It is time people got off the grass and looked forward to a non-racial future, something that can’t happen with the present mindset. The Weekend Sun’s ever popular guide to ‘What’s On’ in the Bay. Pg56 THE WEEKEND SUN
Record Roundabout returns Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Yep, we're starting this week with an eminently true bit of French. For those less familiar with Gallic language it translates as: “the more things change, the more they stay the same”.
I was struck by that when I popped down to the Historic Village last week. It was like visiting an old friend. There, amongst the art galleries and specialist stores was a familiar-looking logo and a familiarlooking shop front: Record Roundabout is back. It's a weird world. The music industry has changed beyond all recognition in the past decade, with downloading services, cloud-based music libraries, the decline of CDs, and the rise of streaming platforms. It sometimes seems as if Spotify, YouTube, Pandora and a handful of others are conquering the business. But, counter-intuitively, the other thing that is on the rise, in a world seemingly governed by speed, convenience and lack of physical encumberment, is the sale of vinyl. So the man who started Record Roundabout in Tauranga 40 years ago is back with its latest incarnation, a spiffy-looking shop filled with bulging bins of records, Tony Pill. memorabilia and all sorts of musicrelated goodies, its walls lined with classic signed posters from Jimmy Barnes, Hunters & Collectors and others, and very little that would have looked out of place last century.
The start
Tony Pill opened the first Record Roundabout in 1989 in 16th Avenue. There's a café there now, next to a hairdresser. Tony didn't stay long. Retail

works better in town than the avenues and before too long he'd relocated. The second iteration was on the corner of Hamilton Street and Willow Street in the basement of a car park, but that was also always destined to be temporary. In the early '90s Tony moved halfway up Devonport Road to a new shopping mall: Devonport Mews. That small enclave of businesses, which included a couple of groovy cafés and a bunch of shops, ran via an escalator through to Grey Street. It struggled for several years but never really took off. That led to Tony's final move, to the place Record Roundabout was best known, Piccadilly Arcade. He was there for a decade. But that was another decade ago now. Records went out of fashion. Everyone wanted the convenience of CDs. And everyone knows what happened next. Slowly downloading chipped away at CDs, then streaming. Music shops became commercially dubious. But now, for reasons that remain somewhat baffling, vinyl is making a return. Which has delighted Tony. He's done all sorts in the past ten years, including getting heavily involved in local football, both as a referee and on the board of Tauranga City FC, enjoying his time with a premier New Zealand club and ending as president of the governing committee.
Record fairs
For the last while he has been back on the music scene too, travelling the country to record fairs and importing all sorts of goodies from round the world. “Most of it comes from the States and a few countries in Europe,” says Tony. “The UK is good, and Germany, but the most interesting market is Holland.” In fact Holland has become a huge distribution point for vinyl. The world's biggest record fair happens in Utrecht, which features more than 500 dealers and takes place over two days in a location the size of two full rugby fields Now Tony is happy to have the iconic shop open again. His own tastes run to blues, jazz and classic rock but he has every genre there and rare stuff wherever you look, including an exclusive Record Store Day release from The Doors, rare Bowie, very rare 45s, books, figurines, all sorts of stuff. He even has CDs And, ever supportive of local music – he was on the Jazz Society committee for six years – Tony is happy to sell music from local bands for no commission. Record Roundabout opens from 10.30am till 3pm (very civilised hours) from Tuesday to Saturday, and he'll be open all through this Saturday's Fringe Festival at the Village. It's well worth a look if you want something special for that music lover in your life.

Home exhibition to showcase local talent Tauranga City Council and Tauranga Art Gallery proudly present 'Mr G: HOME'.
This inaugural solo exhibition celebrates local and internationally recognised artist, Mr G – Graham Hoete – best known for his large-scale, spray painted portraits. Mr G’s international profile was launched when he offered to paint a portrait of ‘The Dog Whisperer’ Cesar
Millan’s pit bull, Daddy, as part of his early 2010 project called Dogathon 100 - painting 100 dogs in a year. This led to a dog portrait for Hollywood stars Ice T and Coco, then onto large-scale portraits of worldfamous celebrities including Prince, Pink and Lebron James - spreading his work around the world from Sydney to the United States and Scotland. Mr G has also painted portraits of many Kiwi legends including Joseph Parker, Steven
Adams and Sir Edmund Hillary. Mr G: HOME will explore the theme of haukinga (home), including Graham’s connection to Matakana and Motiti Islands and his deep affection for his whanau and whenua. Mt G: Home will be hosted at the Tauranga Art Gallery from November 9, 2019 to February 09, 2020. Entry to the art gallery is by donation for New Zealand residents, free for children and $7 for international visitors. For more information, visit: www.artgallery.org.nz/mrgcominghome

Everyone has the potential to be a leader Allowing students to have a proactive voice within their own school community is a priority for ACG Tauranga foundation staff member, Jackie Webb, who has overseen the student leadership programme since it began in 2016.
“I love being a part of the evolving student leadership structure as the school grows,” says Jackie. “Our dynamic, innovative environment allows students to be involved in a diverse range of leadership opportunities. Students thrive when they feel a sense of agency and ownership.” In addition to creating a strong sense of connection,

pride and respect, many other lifeskills gained from student leadership initiatives are easily transferrable to the wider world and future careers. “Forming opinions and having the integrity to listen to and value the opinions of others (especially when you don’t agree), striving for excellence and sharing a collaborative vision while taking equal responsibility towards achieving it, are all attributes required in the workplace,” says Jackie. “Everyone has the potential to be a leader because leadership includes a set of skills which can be practised and developed,” she says. “It can be fostered by teachers
who encourage students to take on responsibilities that they might otherwise shy away from, and by being inspired when hearing about experiences from current student leaders.” Jackie finds running the studen leadership team extremely rewarding and enjoys being a part of the successes that each student experiences as they grow into the role. “I love having the opportunity to work alongside a group of enthusiastic, innovative teenagers as they navigate their journey.” Find out more about ACG Tauranga at their Open Day on Saturday, November 2, or visit: www.tauranga.acgedu.com

We took Tongariro School students out on a ½ day trip on Friday and had a slow day. Plenty of signs outside the entrance, but only a few snapper and tarakihi so we went deeper, which normally is better, but not this time. Came back in and picked up a few more and some red snapper but pretty tough. Then an overnighter to Mayor, where we had probably the slowest fishing ever. Worked all around the island for 1 snapper, plus a few from the evening before. Came back to the Pinns and got enough tarakihi to save the day, but feast to famine compared to last week.

Horoscopes ARIES: Originality is emphasized in just about every area of your life. Be more spontaneous in showing you affections. Social activities prove surprising fun. If looking for a friend, you should find him/her now. TAURUS: Variation is the theme this week. Your intuition is not as potent as you would like to think. Pesky neighbours and overly social work mates could take your time from key projects. GEMINI: There is bright financial news and you begin to feel more secure in your career - but you are also a little bit lonely. Friends look after their own problems and a loved one cancels plans. CANCER: There is a dip in self confidence before the weekend, then you find yourself meeting responsibilities with new determination. Thursday is for teaching, the weekend is for learning. LEO: Romance takes a secondary role to your career and family matters, but your partner remains supportive. Your sense of humour is in great shape. VIRGO: Financial gains from Friday on are mixed with occasional feelings of doubt. Share your concerns with your loved one. Health wise, it’s easy to be accident prone in your home environment so take a slower approach.
LIBRA: Postponements could make you sulk a bit, but a victory on the weekend snaps you out of any moodiness. Misunderstandings clear up by the weekend and you hear good news about someone you really like. SCORPIO: Distractions put you behind schedule and you may find that you have to cancel weekend plans. Starting Sunday, entertainment is your theme. Look forward to amusing encounters and cultural evenings. SAGITTARIUS: A change, rather than a new beginning is the current trend. Important jobs are pressing, but dreamy distractions get in the way as of Saturday. Play up creative talents all week long. CAPRICORN: In romance, you take on the role of advisor to the lovelorn. As for your own love dreams, they can all begin to come true now. Starting Wednesday, the emphasis shifts to education and travel. AQUARIUS: Challenge is your present keyword. Your vitality is inspiring and the week is ideal for achieving a major goal. Romance presents some challenges though some of the challenges are too great even for you! PISCES: A loved one seems too easy to please now, but there is no reason to be suspicious. Friends share good news on the weekend. Prepare to deal with friction among relatives starting Wednesday.
Your birthday You are politeness personified and your standards are high, but watch out, you have a habit of this week imposing them on others. Money making opportunities continue to abound this year, but more important you decide on a long range course of action.
