ForyearsJohnnyhasbeenaone-man bandinfullwarpaintandcultural regalia,charmingandentertaining hiswayroundTauranga–hisprairie, hishuntingground.Nowit’stwo horsepeople.Andit’sexcitingŌtūmoetai.

TiaissidekicktoNgataiRd’s‘Johnny theIndian’.Andthecitystreetsaretheir happyhuntingground–ridingtandem downNgataiRd,fromMatakanaIsland totheMount,Pāpāmoaandallplaces inbetween.

“HalfTaurangaknowsmenow,” chucklesTia.“Thatshockedmyfriends.

“Theysaid:‘Thisisn’tyouatall’.”

Butitis.AndOtūmoetaihasbeen buzzingaboutthenewdoubleact.

“Totallyawesome,”theysaidon Facebook.“Iconiclocals”and“wonderful –peopleexpressingthemselves,adding somecolour.”

Tiadidn’tadvertisethefactbecause there’sseparationinherlife–atschoolis onething,outofschoolisanother. Anditwassixmonthsbeforeafriend recognisedher.

“Yes,that’sme,”shechuckled.Seemsshe quiteenjoyedbeingsprung. Thisstoryactuallystartseightyears earlier,whenIfirstbangedintoJohnny. Itwasabriefbutdeeplyaffectingand enduringmoment.

Johnnyemergedfromthedepthsofthe imagination,fromhistory,fromastory book,fromthedappledlightofMcArdle’s BushontheWaikareaowalkwayearlyone Sundaymorning.

ANativeAmericanchief,viatimewarp fromthe19thCenturyDakotas,theGreat PlainsofAmerica,toTauranga.Longhair boundbybandana,faceandarmsdaubed withwarpaint,quiverandbowacross broadshoulders,bare-chested,barefoot andridingbareback.Animpressivesight.

“SittingBull,”heannounced.

Ofcourse.‘SittingBull’.Ishouldhave guessed.

“Lovethelook,”Isaidtothemanastride thebigbay,thewarhorse.“It’sgreat.”

“Thankyou.Haveagoodday.”A warrioroffewwords,andoffheclipclopped.DowntheDaisy.Amanandhis alterego,amoderndaymanifestationof

thelegendwhokilledhisfirstbuffaloaged 10,whodestroyedGeneralCusteratLittle BigHorn,andthepoliticalandspiritual leaderoftheLakotaSiouxNationtribes.

“Eventually,thescammerwilladvisevictims topayintotheschemefurtherincashonly.” Paymentsarethenbeingmadeinpersonwith offendersgoingtoavictim’shouseorprearrangingtomeetthematasetlocation.
