America’s Cup inspires next generation

“New Zealand’s gonna win!” and “Yeah, New Zealand’s better” rang out from a crowd of Tauranga Intermediate School students this week as they got a rare, up-close look at the oldest sporting trophy in the world.

Ahead of Emirates Team New Zealand’s defence of the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona from October 13-22, the America’s Cup is touring New Zealand to give Kiwis a good look at the Auld Mug

The Toyota Kiwi Cup Tour is taking the America’s Cup to 40 locations throughout New Zealand in 20 days – on Tuesday, September 3, it was Tauranga’s turn.

It’s time to r uffle some feathers!

The kākāpō is back in the competition for 2025.

Yes bird-lovers, it’s that time again – Forest & Bird’s Te Manu Rongonui o te Tau takes flight this week, seeking a new champ for the coveted Bird of the Year title for 2024.

With no controversial kick-outs (yes, the kākāpō is in) nor any foreign election interference on the cards – at least, nothing we know of – this year ’ s competition is anybird’s to win

The campaign calls on Kiwis – of the human kind – to vote for their top five birds and share their “why”.

Voting is now open and closes 5pm Sunday, September 15. The winner will be announced on September 16 See all the campaigns on the Bird of the Year website: www.birdoftheyear.org.nz

Laura Hollands looks directly down the carpeted pitch and bowls her bowl.

All is quiet until her bowl slows and stops within centimetres of the white jack.

Her teammates cheer and clap, and the 11-year-old indoor bowler highfives her coach.

Eagerly searching for the keys on her iPad, Laura presses the words

“excited” and “happy”.

Laura may be non-verbal, but the smile on her face says it all.

It’s a Monday morning and Laura and her teammates – Rohan Chhibber, Regan Unsworth-Taylor, and Matthew Witehira – are practising for their first Zespri AIMS

Games

Concentration is high, as the young indoor bowlers apply accuracy and practice precision on the pitch.

First time

This year will be the first time Tauranga Special School is represented in the intermediate-aged spor ting tournament

Up until now, athletes from its satellite schools have represented their spor ts as par t of other intermediates

Proudly wearing her specially-made AIMS Games jersey with her name and school’s name stitched to the back, Laura sends another bowl down the green

“ Well done Laura,” one of her teachers says in sign language, as Laura claps her hands together in elation

Laura was born with an intellectual disability,

severe non-verbal autism, and cerebral visual impairment She uses her iPad, hand gestures, and sign language to communicate

But even without words, Laura’s laughter and love of life is infectious

Her mum Michelle Hollands says Laura’s teachers describe her as their “hype girl” because she’s always happy

“She’s always keen to give ever ything a go If someone else is doing something, she wants to do it too ”

So it makes sense that, after her big sister Ellison Hollands competed in indoor bowls at AIMS Games two years ago, that Laura wanted to give it a go too

Her big sister Ellison represented Ne w Zealand

Suite 6, 26c Gravatt Rd, Fashion Island Papamoa

A concert by Tauranga’s Inachord Singers will not only raise money for a school in the Solomon Islands, it will also showcase a new variety of songs they’ve been working on.

‘Conversations with Mum’ will be performed by the women ’ s choir at Bethlehem Community Church with guest artists

Michael van Lieshout and Jackie McCaughan on September 14.

“Some members have been with the chorus since 1995,” says Inachord Singers member

Tor y Oliver

“ We now have musical director Dan Ieremia, who challenges us with different music and new skills in terms of musicality and harmonies. Dan is injecting more fun and personality into our performance with the goal of being more engaging while aiming for quality sound

The 26-strong group performs in the community at retirement villages, rest homes and shopping malls. This concert, though, will raise money for medical supplies for children in the Solomon Islands

Medical supplies

“Proceeds will be used to send desperately needed medical supplies to the Florence Young Christian School in Honiara,” says Tor y The Solomon Islands is currently facing an ongoing shortage of medicines and health supplies. “Currently they have none so we would focus on the highest need which is things like antiseptic, malaria medication, plasters, Panadol, feminine hygiene products and bandages.”

The concert theme

‘Conversations with Mum’ is expected to appeal to a wide audience. “A lot of the songs we ’ re singing, anyone could

apply to their childhood. For example, ‘Chasing Visions’ is about reminiscing and wishing you were with someone and ‘Don’t Tell Mama’ is a fun, cheeky number that should get a few laughs.”

Of f icial languages

The Inachord Singers are also working towards including more of New Zealand’s official languages into their performances. “So we have a song in te reo Māori and will eventually be incorporating more NZ Sign Language as well,” says Tor y “It’s not just singing; a few of our members will share stories and there will be short skits to give more variety ”

Sometimes I’m called on to lead a farewell event for someone ’ s earthly life; usually called a funeral, or sometimes a memorial ser vice I lead this event as a Christ follower and so the content is reflective of that, but I often wonder whatpeople think when I talk about “God”? Even if it relates to the faith of the person we have come to remember.

God means lots of things to lots of people; and we normally make up aGod who looks like what we think He/Sheshould be. So it is important to me to beclearabout what God I am talking about

The apostle Paul says God is “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”, defining God in relation to Jesus And Paul talks about Jesus as being the image or icon of God that is like a photocopy of God; the same, such as you wouldn’t know the difference

To know the real God, you have to look at

Jesus To understand the God described in the Old Testament you need to look through the lens ofJesus in the Gospels and without this view you will miss the real God entirely. If you tellme: “I don’tbelieve inGod”I will probably ask you about the God you don’t believe in And chances are I wouldn’t believe in Him either. But when I look at Him through the Jesus lens, I believe
