In 1969 Robin Knox-Johnston won The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race and history was born on two fronts. He had not only become the first man to complete a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the planet, but he had also put an idea in the minds of two men that would ultimately change the face of offshore yachting. Guy Pearce and Anthony Churchill were fascinated by Knox-Johnston’s feat, but, pertinently, they were convinced of the potential of a crewed race following the old square rigger routes around the world. Nothing of its kind existed at the time and skippers were drawn in by the promise of such an adventure. Finding a

According to legend it all started over a beer in a Portsmouth pub; 38 years on, it is still gale-force winds, mountainous seas and sleep deprivation sponsor and an organising club proved difficult until Churchill and Pearce took their plan to the Royal Naval Sailing Association, who they wanted to run the race. Something clicked and, so the story goes, in 1971 in a smoky pub in Portsmouth Colonel Bill Whitbread, of the brewing family, and Admiral Otto Steiner, of the Royal Naval Sailing Association, met to enjoy a beer and discuss the proposal. The first race was held in 1973. Some 17 boats carrying 167 sailors left

the Solent on September 8, 1973 and headed south for Cape Town. Their yachts were the standard ocean cruisers of the time and the crews were, generally speaking, adventurers paying for the privilege or servicemen on an exciting training mission. The skippers were experienced and got paid but the spirit was Corinthian and this was very much a step into the unknown for almost everyone. They raced with the tools of the time, navigating by dead reckoning and sextant

(Roddy Ainslie, a skipper from that first race, admitted his boat was lost much of the time). Their paths followed those of the old square riggers of the 19th century and boats were comfortable. There were separate cabins for the lucky, shared ones for those who weren’t, and stories emanating from Sayula II, the winner of that first lap, told of six bottles of wine being consumed per day. Fridges packed with fresh meat were standard and it was not uncommon in the first few editions for a full-time cook to live onboard. The adventure came from the challenge of taking on the oceans and the elements at their most unpredictable, surviving enormous journeys to far-flung places.

Tragically, three sailors were lost in that first race and a further two sailors died at sea in the nine editions that followed. But the lessons learned have been part of the continuing evolution of the sport Four decades on from Pearce and Churchill’s brainwave, there has been a quantum leap in development. Today the yachts are built from the materials that go into space shuttles and the speeds quantify the improvement: in 1973, Eric Tabarly’s Pen Duick VI did the fastest 24hour run, clocking up 305 miles; in 2008, Torben Grael’s Ericsson 4 managed 596.6 miles. The most expensive, advanced technologies have gone into the transformation, leaving no stone unturned in

pursuit of greater speeds. And yet the lifestyles of the crews could not be more primitive. While some sailors dispute the often told tales of sawn-off, weight-saving, shared toothbrushes, the attention that goes into making a light boat has bordered on obsession. One race legend of the 1997-98 event told a story of the winning skipper yelling at his crew because three pair of sunglasses had been placed on the leeward side of the boat. The cabins, wine, meat, cooks and fresh water have long since gone, replaced by shared bunks, desalinated water, GPS, rehydrated powder food and protein bars. The crews are world champions, Olympic champions and only the most talented youngsters get a foot in the door.

The 38,739-nautical mile route will include stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), ItajaĂ­ (Brazil), Newport (Rhode Island, US), Lisbon (Portugal), Lorient (France) and a 24-hour pit-stop in The Hague (Netherlands) on the final leg. The start of the race will see the brand new high-performance yacht, the Volvo Ocean 65, designed by Farr Yacht Design in the United States and built by a consortium of boatyards in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Switzerland. The new 65-foot (19.8-metre) monohull racing yachts will be strictly One Design and delivered “ready to sailâ€?. The new concept will help significantly reduce the cost of mounting a competitive campaign. The new boat has been designed and built with the latest video, satellite and content production facilities to further enhance the work being done in the unique Onboard Reporter programme that has been in place since 2008-09. These embedded reporters send back multimedia material direct form the racecourse each day, using best-in-class satellite technology and services. Interest in the Race has never been higher especially after the 11th edition proved the closest in history plus this year an allfemale crew will race against Volvo Ocean Race experts and first-time rookies.

This year the 12th edition will commence on the 4th October 2014 from Alicante, Spain. The route will take in 11 ports stopping in Spain, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, United States, Portugal, France finishing on the 27th June 2015 in Gothenburg, the Swedish home of Volvo. Across four oceans and five continents, the six teams that contested the 2011-12 races around the world experienced scorching days and freezing nights in impossibly cramped conditions on board. Over 39,270 nautical miles (45,000 miles or 72,000 kilometres) and over eight months of competition, the sailors took on a challenge of breath-taking scope, hitting maximum speeds of 42 knots (77.8 kph) and being faced with waves as high as 16 metres. Landlords and property sellers Energy Performance Certificates are now compulsory in Spain

If you are selling a property or renting a property for more than four months per year in Spain you will now be required to provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPS).

What is an Energy Performance Certificate?

Will I be able to rent or sell my house without an EPC in Spain?

Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) or as they are properly called, Certificado de Eficiencia Energética (CEE), are documents which will show how energy efficient your home is displayed as a rating from A to G. Much like the stickers you see on things such as fridge freezers, washing machines or air conditioning units, the energy performance certificate in Spain gives the property a standard energy and carbon emission efficiency grade from ‘A’ to ‘G’, where ‘A’ is the most efficient and ‘G’ is the least efficient.

Who needs an Energy Performance Certificate in Spain? Every domestic property for sale or long term rental needs to have an Energy Performance Certificate in Spain. This does not apply to properties that are currently rented out on a long term basis as this was prior to the new ruling. These properties will only require an Energy Performance Certificate when the tenancy expires and a new tenancy agreement is required.

Are there any exceptions? If you have a long term tenant in place you do not need an Energy Performance certificate in Spain. If your property was built after October 2007 you may find that you already have a Spanish Energy Performance Certificate. Likewise if you only rent your property out on a short term basis such as holiday rentals you may not need an EPC in Spain.

NO. You will now be required by law to present your Energy Performance Certificate in Spain when your property is for sale or long term rent. When you sell your house the Notary will need the original EPC and when you rent your house in Spain the tenant will have to be given a copy of your Energy Performance Certificate in Spain.

What if I rent my property out through an agent? Either you or your agent will need to get a Spanish Energy Certificate for your property for long term rentals or sales. An agent will not be legally allowed to offer your property for long term rent or sale without a certificate.

Who can issue the Energy certificate in Spain? Only certified and registered assessors are able to issue the Energy Performance Certificate in Spain. This includes architects, technical architects and some engineers.

As a buyer of property in Spain there are a number of costs and taxes over and above the property price that you will have to pay. Depending upon whether you are buying a new property from a developer, or a resale property from a private individual, you will either have to pay VAT & Stamp Duty, or a transfer tax. The different cases are explained below, along with the other costs and taxes that are common to both cases.

NEW BUILD From A DEVELOPER VAT & Stamp Duty These taxes apply for residential properties being sold for the first time or for commercial properties and plots of land. New Properties Purchase Tax: At present the buyers of brand new houses in Spain are liable to pay 10% IVA on the purchase price of residential properties (villa, apartment, etc), if the house is finished or is being built at the time of the purchase, plus an extra 1.5% stamp duty (Actos Jurídicos Documentados - AJD), however if you purchase land, commercial premises or parking spaces, then the IVA (VAT) rises to 21%

RESALE PROPERTY PURCHASE Transfer Tax House buyers of re-sale property are required to pay the Impuesto de Transferencia de Propiedad - Transfer Tax which is now between 8%. – 10%. This tax applies if the property is deemed to be a second or posterior transfer (i.e. not the first time a newly built home is bought), and is paid by the buyer. If any deposit is paid before completion of the sale it is not subject to ITP pro rata. However the full amount of ITP still has to be paid upon completion. In this scenario there is no IVA to pay. Transfer Tax for resale property purchases is calculated according to the following rate:

Any amount up to 400,000€ = 8% Transfer Tax Any amount between 400,000€ & 700,000€ = 9% Transfer Tax Any amount in excess of 700,000€ = 10% Transfer Tax

INCREASED PATRIMONY TAX PAYABLE TO SPANISH TREASURY When a property sale in Spain takes place, a capital gains tax must be paid by the seller. According to Spanish fiscal law, the buyer withholds 5% of the total purchase price to make sure that the seller does not take the money and run.

Capital gain tax for non-residents The capital gains tax is payable to the Spanish Treasury (Tesoro Público). The “Impuesto sobre la ganancia patrimonial” (capital gain tax) is a tax on the profits obtained from the sale of assets purchased at a lower price. For non-fiscal residents in Spain the capital gain tax will increase to 21% flat rate, from the previous 19%. Capital gain is calculated as the difference between the sale price and the inflation adjusted purchase value of the property (the adjustment is done by using the official coefficient tables from the Spanish Government). To this value the seller can deduct the adjusted cost of purchase and the expenses on the property, like renovations and works. When a non-resident sells a property in Spain there will be a preemptive retention from the tax authorities equivalent to 3% of the sale price, because this amount is in general higher than the capital gain tax to be paid the seller can expect a refund from the Spanish tax authorities during the following fiscal year. There have been talks of increasing the retained percentage but for the time being the tax authorities has set it at 3%.

Capital gain tax for fiscal residents in Spain 21% for the portion between €0 & €6000 (increased from 19%) 25% for the portion between €6000 & €24,000 (increased from 21%) 27% for the portion above €24,000 (increased from 21%)

Any seller who is over 65 and has been a legal resident in Spain for the last three years does not have to pay this tax. Residents and non-residents who purchased the property they are now selling before December 1986 are also exempt from the capital gains tax. PLUSVALIA A special reference should be made to the local capital gains tax – known as Plusvalía. This is a local / municipal tax that only applies to the increase in value of the land upon which urban properties are built, and that is levied at the time of transfer of such properties. It is calculated on the basis of the valor catastral (an administrative equivalent to the UK rateable value) of the property. The amount to be paid will depend on how long the seller has owned the property: the longer the period of time during which the seller has owned the property, the higher the amount of tax. This tax should be paid by the seller, though it is possible for sellers of resale property to try to shift the burden of this tax to the buyer. This practice is unheard of in regions such as the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, though quite common in the Costa Del Sol. Spain is introducing Energy Certification for all properties and

this will need to be shown when selling. The system is similar to energy classification for white goods and an expert will be required to come and survey the property, at a cost of between €350-550.

COMMON COSTS In addition to these taxes there are also other fees that you must take into consideration such as estate agent fess, legal fees, solicitor fees, notary fees, property registration fees and the mortgage set up fee. In Summary, allow for up to 11% of the purchase price to be set aside for taxes and other costs. If the buyer takes out a mortgage these costs can be somewhat higher due to an additional public deed for the mortgage and the inevitable bank charges involved. In this case transaction costs might reach between 12% and 13% of the value of the property purchased.

The positively arched surfaces and lines of the side walls flow into the rear end with a dramatic tapered effect. The rear end, with its surfaces, broad shoulders and distinctive character lines, rounds off the emotive overall appearance. Moving the number plate to the lower part of the rear bumper is a particularly striking modification. It allows the boot lid to be made especially sleek in this area. The three-pointed star is, so to say, free-standing and can thus be made more prominent for greater effect. In addition, it pivots outwards in order to locate the reversing camera and the optional 360° camera in an elegantly functional manner. The arrangement of the LEDs in two horizontal rows in the twopiece tail lamps reveals cutting-edge technology and underscores the sporty character of the vehicle rear, careful attention to detail and the car’s premium value. Form and function fuse in a perfect unity. Part of each light cluster is located in the wing, the other in the boot lid. This characteristic arrangement makes the vehicle highly recognisable by night, too. The two-part rear bumper underscores the sportiness indicated by the front design. The diffusor, painted in high-sheen black, meets in equal measure the requirements made by aerodynamics and by design. Below it there is, as in the front bumper, a horizontal wing in silver look. Integrated in the diffusor are the premium-quality tailpipes. The S-Class Coupé features a panoramic roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.32 m2, it appears almost 150 percent larger than on its predecessor. MAGIC SKY CONTROL makes it possible to switch the transparency of the roof at the push of a button, from light to dark. When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, is reduced to less than 1% and thus effectively diminishes heating up of the vehicle. In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind.

The interior: modern luxury as avant-garde design The interior design of the new S-Class Coupé is an expression of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom – sensual purity. The use of the finest materials, surfaces, colour combinations and seam designs contributes towards achieving a truly exclusive car interior. Air vents, switches, belt extender rosette and trim elements are in electroplated “Silver Shadow”. This gives the trim elements a particularly high value appeal and enhances the three-dimensional effect of their surfaces. In front of the armrest, the touchpad (optional) can be found, with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be

Diverse controls, e.g. for the multi-media system, are arrayed as keys in a semicircle in front of the central control element. The Exclusive package optionally includes seats in Exclusive nappa designo leather with a striking diamond backstitching pattern on backrests and seating surfaces. The front-seat seatbelts are integrated in the rear side panelling without interrupting the waistline when the windows are open; seatbelt extenders make them easily accessible for the seat occupants. The optional head-up display brings important information directly into the driver’s field of vision, presenting it on the windscreen to ensure less distraction from the traffic situation. The technical basis for this system is a specular optics system and a full-colour display module with a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels, operating with high-power LEDs. They project the virtual image, which measures around 21 x 7 centimetres, into the driver’s field of vision where it appears to float around two metres away above the bonnet. The resolution of more than 60 pixels per degree of viewing angle ensures a needlesharp image. A special light sensor located near the top edge of the roof automatically adjusts the brightness of the head-up display to the exterior lighting conditions.

MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first “suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function, the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The curve tilting function makes the Coupé lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher speeds, but to produce a more pleasant motoring experience.

The history of the large post-war Mercedes coupés dates back to the year 1952, when Mercedes-Benz launched the legendary 300 S Coupé - a “car for the world’s elite” as the automotive press of the time judged. It was followed in 1956 by the 220 S Coupé of the W180 model series, which created a sensation in particular due to its self-supporting pontoon body. From 1961 to 1971, the elegant Coupé of model series W111/W112 enthralled no fewer than 29,918 highly discerning customers, who were able to choose between the Type 220 SEb Coupé six-cylinder models and the Type 280 SE 3.5 Coupé eight-cylinder models.

The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system, optionally available for the S 500 Coupé includes, apart from the Active Body Control (ABC) and ROAD SURFACE SCAN functions, the new curve tilting function. With Active Body Control the suspension struts are equipped with hydraulic cylinders (so-called plungers), in order to adjust the force in each strut individually.

The SEC coupés of model series C 216, which remained in the programme of the Stuttgart-based automotive brand for ten years and of which over 74,000 were sold, were based on the S-Class of 1981. In 1992, the successor model (model series C 140) was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, also featuring for the first time as an S 600 Coupé with a 394 hp 12-cylinder engine. It was to be the car in which the Electronic Stability Program ESP® had its world première in 1995. Later on this coupé was renamed “CLClass”. Another forefather of the new S-Class Coupé celebrated its world première under this name in March 1999. With pioneering innovations such as active ABC suspension (Active Body Control) and bi-xenon headlamps, this two-door car set new standards.

Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function shifts the base point of each individual strut. This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second and to angles of up to 2.5 degrees in – depending on the road angle and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to 15 metres ahead, and an additional transversal acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of three drive modes using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 30 to 180 km/h. Emotive-sporty sound: exhaust system with flaps The emotive sound of the exhaust system makes a decisive contribution to the sporty driving experience. The deeper sound components ensure a fuller, sportier sound. In the transversally positioned rear silencer of the twin-pipe exhaust system, there are two flaps that can be opened and closed pneumatically depending on the engine speed. When the flaps are open, the exhaust gases are conducted through the rear silencer along a different path so that the vehicle sound becomes more powerful. The switching point of the flaps depends upon the drive programme selected – in the S programme the flaps open earlier than in the E programme. As soon as the S-Class Coupé engine starts, the power of its sound can be heard.

WORLD CLASS Montegrappa’s Icons Pens celebrate notable figures in the fields of sport, culture and entertainment. Unveiling the remarkable pens will be a viral video, produced by Wendell Marinho da Silva, that tells the story of the world’s greatest footballer from humble origins to global reverence. Shot in part in Paris, with Pelé himself, the miraculous moves, the phenomenal victories, the adoring crowds: images, music and narration will create a visual experience that celebrates Montegrappa’s homage to one of the most highly-regarded sportsmen the world has ever seen. Two designs have been created for the Pelé Icons Pen Limited Edition. The Heritage features models with solid gold or solid silver trim. The top of the cap is shaped to represent a football, atop a crown that reads around its circumference ‘All Hail The King’. The colours of the Brazilian flag form the surface of the cap in yellow, with green surrounding the crown. Inspired by the original championship trophy, the spring-loaded clip features cabochons on each side. The barrel of the Heritage version is finished in guilloché under translucent blue enamel to create the impression of Pelé’s familiar shorts, complete with a ‘notch’ at the bottom. The barrel’s blind cap matches his socks, finished with green-and-yellow stripes. At the nib end, the surround is etched with Pelé’s signature and the dates of 1958-1962-1970, the years Pelé won his three FIFA World CupsTM. Engraved in the nib is the classic image of Pelé’s ‘bicycle kick’, while the opposite end of the barrel is engraved with the individual serial number. The Heritage solid silver trim edition consists of 1283 fountain pens and 1283 rollerball pens representing the number of goals scored in his entire career, while the gold edition is limited to 10 fountain pens and 10 roller balls, signifying his jersey number. Made of black resin, the P10 Edition features silver trims, with the top inspired by the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the colours of Brazil filled in with enamel. The P10’s clip is a sceptre, to represent ‘The King of Football’, with a miniature football containing a sapphire at its top. The legend, ‘The King of Football’, is engraved around cap, with Pelé’s signature on the side of the cap in white. Blue, green and yellow bands surround the blind cap, while the nib features an engraving of Pelé’s ‘bicycle kick’. Series numbering is engraved on the end of the barrel, identifying the P10 as one of 1940 pieces in total in fountain pen, rollerball or ballpoint, representing the year of Pelé’s birth. Four boats sold in pre-launch: the Azimut 77S seems to have already taken the road to success in the wake of his younger brother Azimut 55S, the best-selling of which, two years after the launch, were produced as many as 40 units. The yacht embodies that special synthesis of stylistic innovation, technology, and functionality found in all the Italian boatyard’s latest models. The pivoting stern platform or maximum flexibility, the wavepiercing vertical bow – for the first time introduced with the Azimut 55S - the single large deckhouse window, the glazed roof, superior performance, and enhanced fuel efficiency thanks to three engine configuration coupled with Volvo Penta IPS transmission are just some of the main features. The most striking quality of this new jewel in the Azimut Yachts S Collection is its streamlined silhouette designed by Stefano Righini. The furnishings and interiors by Carlo Galeazzi are the ultimate in style, with the polished Zebrano wood and hand-sewn leather rendering them breathtakingly precious. There is no doubt about it, Azimut 77S is beautiful. Azimut 77S is also extremely functional, light-filled, and spacious. The salon and dining area are an explosion of natural light coming from the large lateral windows, the nearly three-metre wide glazed entry doors,

the bow windshield, and most of all from the glazed roof. Azimut 77S is literally full of surprises. The crew area is below deck to the stern.
