Parisian Palace

ocated just steps away from the Champs-Elysees, the George V hotel in Paris is steeped in history, since its inauguration in the 1920s, it has become a true icon of the City of Light. Designed by Richard Martinet the George V hotel was named in tribute to the reigning king of England and can only be described as the epitome of luxury. After four decades of service in October 1997, the George V hotel closed its doors as part of an exhaustive renovation and rebranding project under the watchful eyes of its new owners Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, who reportedly spent $167 million to acquire the property from the London-based Granada Group, and $125 million more on rebuilding and design. The project was steered by the construction giant Bouygues, the same firm that refurbished the Louvre and more than 1,100 artisans and workmen were involved in the renovation, in December of 1999 the rebranded Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris was opened. This incredible eight-story landmark building sparkles with period architectural details, lavish interior and exterior spaces and offers some of the city’s finest dining. The Art Deco gates and medallions over the glass entrance doors of the George V have been replaced and now look as they did in 1928, when the historic hotel opened. The long, narrow gallery once again has a 500-square-foot Savonnerie carpet, three Murano crystal chandeliers and a 17th-century Flemish tapestry. Its tall windows look out onto the interior courtyard, with its restored irongrille balconies and replicated royalblue awnings. Even the 16 planted magnolia trees were nurtured through the two-year renovation period. The renovation not only restored the original Art Deco design and facade, but it provided state-of-theart infrastructure and contemporary amenities. Guests will find the spirit of the old George V in the well-dressed guests who meet for afternoon tea and drinks in La Galerie, toting Ferragamo and Fendi shopping bags from the neighbourhood fashion houses. They can also see the new Four Seasons appeal in energetic young couples in casual dress working out in the health club, business travellers plugging in their laptops and families with wellbehaved youngsters. Part of the reason for the hotel’s tremendous appeal is its location. Situated within the Triangle D’or Paris’ Golden Triangle the Four seasons George V hotel is a stone’s throw from the most exclusive areas of Paris, like the Avenue Montaigne and the Rue Saint-Honoré and some of the city’s most famous architectural treasures.

The hotel’s original 300 rooms were reduced to 245 rooms and suites, during the refurbishment with the 184 rooms divided into three classes: Superior, Deluxe and Premier. The 61 suites and apartments; 30 with private terraces, are in nine categories: Executive Suite, One- Bedroom Superior and Deluxe Suites, Duplex Apartment, Two-Bedroom Superior and Deluxe Suites, Specialty Suites, and Presidential and Royal Suites.

Accommodation

Rooms are a generous 450 to 600 square feet, and suites range from 750 to 1,660 square feet. Each room or suite is coordinated around one of three colour schemes; buttercup yellow, celadon green or lavender blue, which is echoed in the walls, carpets, damask bedspread, fabrics, and even in the classically French-style Louis XVI or Empire painted wooden cabinets and consoles that hold the TV, VCR, CD and video game station. Rooms also feature a desk with three telephone lines, including a data port for modems, a separate fax line and voice mail. Every room has a computer keyboard that, with the television monitor, provides high-speed Internet access. Spacious bathrooms are fashioned in Four Seasons’ signature beige marble, with sink top and design details that echo each room’s dominant colour. Large separate showers, deep bathtubs, separate toilet stalls, thick terry robes and oversize towels, hair dryers and Bulgari toiletries all serve to provide the bathroom luxury to which veteran Four Seasons guests are accustomed.

The Four Seasons’ world-renowned restaurant Le Cinq is among the city’s most elegant dining rooms and has been awarded a coveted two Michelin stars. Boasting beautiful views of the hotel’s courtyard, with its crystal chandelier, marble columns and palm trees, it is an elegant setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The executive chef, Philippe Legendre, came from the Michelin three-star rated Taillevent.

Dining

The La Galerie Lounge is the heart and soul of the Hotel, La Galerie showcases beautiful Flemish tapestries, 19th-century paintings and furniture, as well as many exquisite objets d’art. The atmosphere is of elegance and genuine peace, highlighted by the pianist. This is the best spot for people-watching, intimate conversation and light fair.

A defining spirit of elegance and charm

T

he summer sun is slowly beginning to set, and for the interior design enthusiasts amongst you, thoughts are probably turning to the small touches you can make to your home to get it in line with the latest trends for autumn. Right now, you’ve got your summer accessories out but as with fashion, seasons change quickly and our thoughts now move to what’s hot for autumn.. Here are our top interior design trends to get you prepared. This season is all about opposites and extremes: the loud, outrageous and aggressive alongside the quiet, calm and restrained. As well as disorientation and doubt, there is comfort and rational certainty. It’s more about attitude than colour, and you should choose the colour palette to suit our mood. Neutrals can help maintain order, while autumnal palettes become more adventurous. But take note balance is the key to this look.

Autumn Trends

28

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Neutrals are as raw as last season, with chalky whites and coarse linen tones, anchored by calming blacks. Brown influences many colours, creating red browns, dark browns, rich browns and neutral browns. Blues are important on three levels: grey blues are subdued, progressing from offwhite and lilac. Greens have less significance this season, and are mainly olive tinted, tones range from buttery pales to sharp lime to sombre green-blacks. Yellows are more distinctive than in the summer, with a golden hue creating tans and ochres. Oranges are pale almond and peach, plus intense neon orange and rich caramel. Reds are lively and warm, with corals, flames, tomato shades and burnt dark brown. Pink has been replaced with mauves, such as ash rose and lilac brown, and darker tones such as port, damson and coffee-bean brown add a dramatic effect.

Colour Palettes

Mix it up Some of these combinations may at first seem strange or even weird. But this is all part of the season’s character: OPPOSITES & CONTRADICTIONS. Greys and dull neutrals balance a subdued orange and faded green. Bleached pastels are the perfect foil for a warm, strident red. Oriental influenced darks contrast with decorative red, green and yellow. An intensified palette of fiery orange, chrome green and sulphur yellow teams up with deep, inky blues. Jaded greens and blues compete with toffee-toned brights. The warmth of pale orange and deep rust finds a perfect partner in cool blue.

Raw materials

Stone and wood are really being showcased in their natural stripped down state, really showcasing the beauty of the material in its natural form. Sticks, branches, and even wood stumps are set to be brought into the home, while crystals, gems and geodes and finding their way indoors too.

Computer generated Fabrics On runways, fashion designers have been showing computer-generated photorealist fabrics. Believe me, we’ll soon be seeing those kinds of fabrics in living rooms too.

Embroidery and knitting

It’s a shame we didn’t pay attention to grannie!! If we did, our homes would look right on trend. Embroidery and knitting is a major trend for 2013. From colourful carpets with thousands of knots to various storage baskets and poof covers, handmade is back and appears it will be here for a while. The modern twist of these items produced by hand gives them a particular charm, one that cannot be obtained from any industrially produced household decoration. It’s all about

showcasing your personality.

Upcycled furniture

We all know how much of a hit shabby chic styling has been in the last year or so; well upcycled furniture plays on that style, but with a new modern twist. Rather than keeping furniture looking old and vintage, upcycled gives it a new lease of life. Think classic wooden sideboards painted with a whole host of bright colours, vivid pink dining room chairs; that kind of thing. Gloss! High gloss! Shine! Polish! Lacquer!

Stripes, stripes, stripes

Dynamics designs inspire vibrant living and energy. One of the simplest ways to achieve this effect is by employing stripes in an elegant manner. Carpets, wallpapers, upholstery, graphic art. Each of these elements can wear the distinct feature of movement as long as they are defined by‌ stripes. Bold red and black & white patterns are the highlight of the design themes again, only this time associated with minimalist decor complements. The idea is to make things stand out, without compromising on visual harmony.

IRRESISTABLE REFINEMENT Using her past experience and aristocratic upbringing she has created a timeless style. Princess Bianca grew up in the family residence in Austria. A picturesque castle, called Trofeiach. Travel was part of her upbringing and the designer’s travels started at a young age, when she moved with her family to Canada, the USA, Lebanon, and finally Iran, each move enabled the designer to gain knowledge and understanding of these diverse influences through their architecture and culture. Princess Bianca later settled in the Jet-set resort of Marbella, where she married Prince Heinrich von Hanau, from the Hessen dynasty. Her time has hereon been spent between numerous metropolitan cities and resorts and at some of the most magnificent homes worldwide. Modern and Contemporary Art WHY COLLECT ?

There are different reasons why someone feels the exigency to collect art: it can be for cultural reasons, for economical and investment reasons, or simply for esthetical ones but all have in common a deep sensibility, a great spiritual depth and a strong love for beauty.

HoA is mainly engaged in contemporary art, but in case of advice for the establishment of private collections or simply to find a work coveted by a collector who has addressed to us, we can, through our international contacts, to assess and achieve even modern art.

Collecting contemporary art and is one of the most exciting ways to interpret the world right now, like living in a live show, through a process that ties together the most diverse aspects of aesthetic and conceptuality linked and guided by the collector’s personality.

One of our collectors says: “I started to buy works of art several years ago, but I think I have become a collector only recently, meaning as collector one who is buying without thinking about where to place it, and sees collecting as a reflection of his own personality.

Collecting art is a path of personal growth. We have just to remember that a collection is not a body of work, but the portrait of taste, passion and culture of the owner. As it is said by Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate Modern Museum in London: “If you can afford it, the best way to deal with art is buy it, live it with passion and take care of it”.

and showcasing the work at your own home, then you tend to make more organic choices, to include works by artists who at the first instance do not totally reflect your taste, but that trace a path in the art scene. Gallery Houses of Art, works to promote high quality contemporary and modern art. We represent international artists with a solid important background who feature in international collections and museums as well as emerging and mid career international artists. At the same time we support a select group of young artists by exhibiting their works from an early stage to take them to a level of international exposure, collaborating for this purpose with other international galleries. We assist collectors at all levels in the primary and secondary market and provide a detailed provenance of all works of art exhibited.

HoA Fabrizio Corneli THE IMAGE AND ITS CONTRARY

Men have always perceived shadow as an incorporeal double of themselves and of the world of things – a sort of bridge between the physical and the imagination, between the body and the spirit, between visible and the invisible. It is about this perceptual and conceptual ambiguity that Corneli works. Almost the “ground of the middle”, looking for that “middle place” of the living space in which man materializes the eternal relationship between opposites, between earthly reality and spiritual dimension, finite and infinite. The magic of the silent works of Fabrizio Corneli is built from the shadows, with its immateriality great protagonist of his art: it is the shadow that identifies the image, changing the memory in the physical presence, the physicality in immateriality, the image in vision. And, to its opposite, the light, the essence of

the visible, ideal extreme limit that can exceed the form to touch the pure feeling. The light is, on the other hand, one of the most powerful demonstrations of the greatness of human creation: the appropriation of knowledge, no longer thought of as divine, is the birth of the city, the artificial horizon and the invention of mechanical reproduction: it is the end of the night of reason to be the beginning of the acquisition and the unveiling. It is the condition of a desire that through the darkness becomes fragment of appearance. Corneli change the common conception of the relationship between light and shadow: in his works the light is the agent of the apparition, but it is the shadow that evokes and defines the image. The immaterial – the shadow – becomes the element of materialization of form. The technique chosen by Corneli for his works, anamorphosis, it is ancient knowledge, which

combines science and poetry. The result of a careful mathematical study of anamorphosis (ana-MORFOSIS, reconstructed form) allows the artist to form the image almost magically, without defining the contours or shape physically the material, playing on rules of perspective and perception that transform into figures small cuts in thin metal plates.

Fabrizio Corneli will present his fascinating shadows and lights in a Solo Exhibition, from the 19th of September until the 22nd of October, 2013, at the Gallery Houses of Art Marbella Club Hotel

The Queen of Kelly Hoppen MBE is the darling of British Interior design and is acknowledged as one of Britain’s most influential style gurus. Her simple but opulent style has permeated interior design at every level, and has resulted in her work being featured in various newspapers and magazines across the globe.

Kelly’s style fuses the Eastern principles of simplicity with the Western taste for sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes against a beautiful paint palette of natural tones. These signature colour tones have become the staple of Kelly’s designs earning her the title “Queen of Taupe” and instead of taking this title as a dig Kelly is very proud to be linked with this colour palette, “because I take my inspiration from organic shapes, texture and the interplay between materials, it is subtlety and ease that are the hallmarks of my style rather than brash, ‘in your face’ elements” she quoted. Kelly’s rise to interior goddess was not through a conventional method, she didn’t attend a highbrow interior school, and with her stunning model looks and cascading toffee curls she looks like she should be gracing the cover of a magazine instead of designing the people’s homes featured within it… but then this is what Kelly Hoppen is all about! Her career began 37 years ago when as an independent 16-year-old with a relentless passion for design Kelly was given the opportunity to design a family friend’s kitchen. This modest commission not only created a teenage entrepreneur, it kick-started one of the most celebrated and extraordinary careers in the design industry, from there she worked for a race car driver, partner of one of her girlfriends, she designed a bachelor pad for the actor Martin

Shaw, star of 1970s cop show The Professionals, and through this whirl of excitement and contacts Kelly says the business “just happened” but not before some failed attempts at working for others “I did some Saturday jobs. I got thrown out of Harrods, didn’t last more than a day. And I got thrown out of Tile Mart. Every job I went to, I lasted a day. I hated working for someone else, I’m too bull-headed,” she says. In 1975 her business, Kelly Hoppen Interiors was formed and since this formation she has gone on to design for the rich and famous such as Victoria Beckham, Madonna, Elton John and it is even rumoured she worked with Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge. Not limited to just celebrity homes she has also undertaken many projects around the world for a variety of different spaces including houses, hotels, yachts, ski chalets, private jets as well as the interiors for British Airways first class cabins. Kelly has also been successful in a variety of business areas establishing herself as designer, retailer, author, educator and innovator. In 2007 she famously stated that “she’d never work for less than £300,000”, good work if you can get, and Kelly Hoppen certainly can as her ever expanding waiting list shows. Although her career has now spanned nearly four decades, Kelly Hoppen shows no sign of slowing down. Amongst other projects, Kelly has found the time to re-open her highly successful ‘Kelly Hoppen Design School’ which she originally launched in 2003, her ninth book is due out in September, she has a new creative partnership with bathroom specialists Crosswater, and has re-entered the world of TV having recently completed filming the new season of Dragons’ Den. Kelly is also been expanding her business, supporting various charities, acting as a trade ambassador for Britain as part of the Government’s GREAT campaign, and working with UK Trade & Investment mentoring SMEs. Kelly Hoppen is fearless and as one of Britain’s most sophisticated career women she lives by her slogan that “nothing is too big, and nothing’s ever big enough”!

KELLY’S HOUSE RULES n Create balance on mantelpieces and other surfaces by juxtaposing one over scaled object with two or three miniature ones n Beware colour as classic Kelly is a yin-yang scheme of dark and pale, using a palette of neutral colours and contrasting textures. n Mix old and new antique and vintage, against the clean lines of stark contemporary pieces n Introduce texture as without it, a neutral scheme will look flat and dead. n Start with linen as your first choice of fabric: without it, a scheme will never feel quite right. n Unblock energy within the home using crystals, colour, candles, music, and chainmail curtains made of small metal balls. n Create symmetry if a fireplace is off-centre in a room make sure you line the sofa up with it.

The Ten Commandments of Interior Design

It may seem obvious but when designing your dream home a few handy tips can go a long way to avoiding those little mishaps

1

Discover your personnel style

Nowadays there are numerous resources available to help you discover what your personnel style is. To help you establish what look you want to achieve start a style & idea folder of rooms / elements within a room that you love. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles to create a custom look that is just you, it doesn’t matter if you are a traditionalist at heart you can still incorporate the clean sleek lines of contemporary items.

2

8

Accessorise with artwork

Wall art doesn’t need to be expensive it needs to please you. Framed personal photographs tell about people and places that hold great meaning for you. Many homeowners think expensive price tags when they think of art. However, art doesn’t have to have a high monetary value as long as it has high personal value. Framing personal photographs of your favourite vacation can add a beautiful statement to a room, while making it uniquely your own

Plan ahead

Be sure to have a well thought out plan before you start designing any room, this will help to keep you focused on the job at hand to stop you deviating and starting new jobs before the current job is finished - there’s nothing worse than having lots of unfinished design jobs within the home.

3

Don’t fall into a design trap

All the design and interior magazines may be showcasing the latest trend – but remember that’s all it is. While the latest trends and styles are great at offering inspiration you don’t want to find yourself with a dated look, instead borrow ideas from these trends and incorporate them into your design plan to create a unique look suited to your style and taste.

4

Don’t skimp on quality products

It’s easily done, instead of buying a quality product we sometimes tend to make do with the easiest option, but remember you pay for what you get! Buy brands that you know and trust especially when it comes to appliances, you may pay more initially but in the long term it will last a lot longer and be cheaper.

9

Don’t use decorative items simply to fill a space

The decorative accents you choice should be functional and inspirational. When searching for that special item don’t give up and select something that you don’t truly love or buy it just because it suits your budget. If you can’t afford that special something wait it will be well worth the wait once you’ve managed to save your pennies and it takes pride of place in your room

10

Make sure your rooms complement each other

Open floor plans make colour flow and design flow more important than ever. No room is an island. Some colours complement each other and work wonderfully together. Others just seem jarring and uncomfortable when used together. Design styles should also flow from one room to another. All surface textures and finishes should be considered in your plan and be used to draw the design elements of one room into another.

5

Choose your colours carefully

Colour is one of the best ways to too add warmth and personality in a room. Find what shades make you happy and use them to add some life to your room. Small rooms are a great place to make a dramatic colour statement however if you don’t feel that brave accent doorways, bay windows to add that splash of colour.

6

Pay attention to lighting

Lighting is a key element in achieving success when designing. In addition to the functional aspects, lighting also helps to set the mood and ambience of a room. When deciding what lighting to use, think about how the room will be used as this will help you decide on the correct fixtures and fitting. Don’t be afraid of different types of lighting such as incandescent or halogen, or sconces and chandeliers.

7

Don’t forget to look Up

While the main focus of any room is the floor and walls it is important not to forget your ceiling. The ceiling can help to add dimension and character to a room, if you are designing a traditional room crown mouldings look fantastic, for a more modern look why not extend the colour of the walls onto the ceiling to create a cohesive, never-ending look to the room. Just be sure to choose a ¼ lighter shade of paint on the ceiling since horizontal planes tend to look darker than vertical planes.

time T

ime, it is something we all take for granted and gone are the days when time was simply read on a wristwatch or clock within the home these days it seems there is a digital display of time everywhere we turn from our mobile phones, to our computer screens, to the displays on our Blu-Ray / DVD systems.

But clocks are not just about telling the time they are also home decorative pieces. Clocks that function as beautiful accents in the house can be split into two divisions: Time Trends, which addresses popular fashion movements, and Time Traditions, clocks designed in a classical styles.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

83

Time traditions Grandfather Clocks Grandfather clocks at one time were only ever seen in the homes of the wealthy upper class and over time grandfather clocks moved into homes of the middle class because they were inherited from family members. Even today Grandfather clocks are still one of the more expensive clocks to own because of the detailing and mechanisms in the clock.

Pendulum Clocks The most common type of pendulum clocks is the ones that hang on the wall. The pendulum swings back and forth while the clock ticks away.

Mantle Clocks If you have watched any movies or television shows, you will occasionally catch a clock on the mantle of the fireplace in the 70’s these types of clocks where very popular. A Time Tradition clock the mantle clocks has fared better commercially then any of the other clocks in this trend because they have adapted with time and are now available in many modern designs.

Carriage Clocks Carriage clocks are a rectangular clock that was used in travel in the 19th century. Carriage clocks are often used as a decorative item in book cases or on the mantel these days.

Time trends Word Clocks Rather than a digital display that reads the time numerically, this clock displays the time in your chosen language. Word clocks are becoming extremely popular right now as home decor pieces and make great conversation pieces. They are also available as physical clocks, computer programs and iPhone apps, so you can find the word clock that fits your life.

Oversized Clocks When it comes to these amazing clocks, function is most certainly second to fashion! This isn’t just a clock; it’s a piece of art! Placed on the wall as a statement piece or placed against a wall these clocks add impact to a room immediately

www.cranialcollision.com, www.clocktiquesrc.com, www.dougswordclock.com, www.garysullivanantiques.com, www.hayneedle.com, www.sothebys.com

Choosing the right clock for your home With so many different variations of clocks available nowadays with varying designs and style choosing the right clock for your home is a matter of looking at the following factors. - Type of clock - Where you will position the clock (i.e. living room, kitchen or hallway) - The size of the clock - The interior design theme of your home The first deciding factor is what type of clock do you want to add to your interior design theme, do you want a Time Trend or Time Tradition clock, is your style modern, vintage, retro or contemporary once you have decided this you need to establish where your new clock will be places. A kitchen clock would definitely look out of place in a living room, home office or study likewise a mantle or carriage

clock would look silly in the bathroom! Choosing the wrong type of clock for a room can have a big impact on its overall style and flow but choosing the right clock can be spectacular. Another important factor to keep in mind is the size of clock. What size space do you have to fill, do you require a wall mounted clock, a standalone clock or a simply decorative mantel clock. Finally, the aesthetics of the clock do you want a digital or an analogue clock. The preference of numerical digits or hands indicating the time is personal, but a clock with hands usually looks better if you’re buying one for decorative purposes. Although digital variants can look really sleek, in some settings it just doesn’t look right and the old-fashioned hands of time are a wiser choice.

Clock Mechanism Got an empty space on your wall? Why not fill it with a clock hands. The mechanism of the clock is fixed to the wall and the large hands tell the time used with or without numbers. This design is a real eye-catcher so, be prepared to stare at it all day.

Keep autumn chills at bay... September sees the official arrival of autumn, the warm summer sun is fading fast and as the air starts to chill and the sun begins to set earlier, we all sense a slight internal pull to start preparing for the chill of autumn. Thermostats are turned up, candles are removed from hearths and firewood is gathered. The best and most economical way to recapture that warmth of summer is with fire. Fireplace designs have come a long way over the past few years, not only do they add a toasty warmth to the home and a sense of relaxation but more importantly they make an effective interior design statement.

The beauty of modern fireplaces is that they blend naturally with any aesthetic design because they come in all shapes and sizes; from gas fireplaces, gas stoves, wood burning stoves, electric fireplaces, pellet stoves, inbuilt fireplaces or freestanding fireplaces. C

andles are a great way to refresh your interior design. Even if you don’t ever light them, the style, the texture, the candle holders all add up to your unique home design. Candles are a great way for creating the right moods, and the scented candles can be very soothing. Candles are the ideal accessory for decorating any room. Love, harmony, beauty, relaxation, and colour are only a few things that they address. They can calm and excite; illuminate and cast shadows; speak volumes and whisper. The important thing to remember when decorating with candles is that they always have the last word. Since they add the final touch to a room, anywhere a candle speaks, people listen.

O

ne of the most popular places to include candles is the fireplace or mantel. But of course, your living room is not the only room that can be a host to candles. Bathrooms and bedrooms both benefit from the look and smell of candles. When placing a candle in a room try to match the colours of you candles with the furnishings and other interior dĂŠcor elements. The colour choice is as important as the type of candle itself. Some believe that colours have significant meanings (i.e. red=energy and passion, green=wealth and abundance). Still, it is best to choose colours that match the existing colour scheme. If you want a simply ivory candle a piece of coloured ribbon wrapped around the object that is housing the candle can pull the decoration together. In other words, there is no need to pick any old colour to bring attention to candles. They speak for themselves.

Tiffany Lamps The first Tiffany lamp was created around 1895. Each lamp was handmade by skilled craftsmen, not mass or machine-produced. Its designer was not, as had been thought for over 100 years, Louis Comfort Tiffany, but a previously unrecognized artist named Clara Driscoll was identified in 2007 by Rutgers professor Martin Eidelberg as being the master designer behind the most creative and valuable leaded glass lamps produced by Tiffany Studios.

e button-back back! The Chesterfield sofa is not just a piece of furniture but a piece of history.

A proud piece of furniture, made by proud craftsmen,

T

he Chesterfield sofa has a long and surprisingly complex history that stretches back over two centuries. It’s now a ubiquitous piece of furniture and no lawyer’s office or upmarket coffee house seems complete without one. Yet that hasn’t always been the case. The Chesterfield sofa was once exclusively the preserve of the wealthy and well to do. It was, and still is, regarded as a status

symbol: a luxurious and classic item, but with an understated elegance that sits perfectly with the British psyche. The classic Chesterfield sofa has been a part of interior design and stately fashion for hundreds of years. But where did it come from and how has it evolved? It is rumoured that the Chesterfield sofa was originally commissioned by Philip Dormer

Stanhope, the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield way back in the late eighteenth century and this is how it is believed to have got its name. Whether that’s an urban myth or fact, is impossible to judge. Many have laid claim to creating the Chesterfield sofa, and the actual facts may well never be discovered, however, the Earl has been portrayed sitting on a Chesterfield.

for proud customers...

Aside from being a much-admired politician and writer, patron of Voltaire, the Earl was known as a trendsetter. Apparently the Earl requested a local craftsman to construct a piece of furniture that would allow a gentleman to sit upright in the utmost of comfort allowing sitting without wrinkling the garment. This was the original purpose of the chesterfield sofa with its characteristic deep buttoned upholstery, rolled arms, equal back and arm height and nail head trim. There has never been any solid confirmation of this noble beginning; however, this namesake is certainly appropriate.

A luxurious and classic item, but with an understated elegance that sits perfectly with the British psyche Legend has it that in March 24th, 1773 when the nobleman passed away his very last words were directed to his personal butler. The old Earl while on his deathbed was visited by a friend and upon leaving the Earl ordered to his manservant: “Give Mr. Dayrolles a chair before passing away. The servant took Lord Stanhope at his word and

waving away protests, insisted that Mr Dayrolles, a budding young diplomat who had come to enquire after the elderly man’s health, take the armchair with him. After carrying the heavy chair back home, Mr. Dayrolles had a proper look at the chair: a magnificent piece of work in deep brown leather, indented with large, deeply set buttons. The years of wear had served to lend the item an even more attractive appearance. It had become an ageless and timeless masterpiece! Throughout time, the Chesterfield sofa has come to represent different things to different people. The classic image being a vintage study filled with smoke from expensive cigars and brandy glasses (imagine Sherlock Holmes) to the pre-requisite seating of Gentleman’s clubs in London. The Victorian era saw the chesterfield become a piece of furniture in the living room of the elite and wellheeled, gentlemen would relax on them while their wives sat in chairs crafting needlepoint and since the 19th century, it has been linked with Freudian psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud originally used a sofa during his hypnosis sessions with patients.

So what about today? What was once a status symbol of the elite is now a much sought-after addition to the modern home or business. History notwithstanding, Chesterfield sofas have remained forever the epitome of luxury, class and style. Nowhere will you find a more recognized, timeless example of a piece of furniture. The beauty of any Chesterfield Settee is

What was old is new again with antiques enthusiasts looking for a retro look, the vintage icon has now been reborn in a wide range of editions: classic, limited, reviewed, customized… featuring leather or velvets and in colours such as white, purple, hot pink, silver, gold... Whatever the future of this harmonious courtship of refined structure and luxurious comfort, the chesterfield sofa is sure to remain in demand for centuries to come.

that it is truly versatile and adaptable. You might mistakenly believe that a minimal, white-walled living space would cry out for modern furniture, but this isn’t necessarily the case. A sleek, contemporary Chesterfield sofa covered in a bright or boldly patterned fabric can look awesome in such surroundings. You could also introduce a traditional leather Chesterfield sofa into a modern environment to make a dramatic style statement too. The real beauty of interior furnishing is in mixing and matching colours and textures, and juxtaposing the old with the new. Chesterfield sofas have the ability to be the chameleons of the furniture world. They can be whatever you want them to be, where ever you want them to be.

Italy is a world trendsetter, and has produced some of the greatest furniture designers in the world, such as Gio Ponti and Ettore Sottsass. Italian art deco reached its pinnacle under Gio Ponti, who made his designs sophisticated, elegant, stylish and also modern, exotic and creative.

With the fall of Fascism, rise of Socialism and the 1946 RIMA exhibition, Italian talents in interior decorating were made evident, and with the Italian economic miracle, Italy saw a growth in industrial production and also mass-made furniture. Yet, in the 1960’s and 1970’s saw Italian interior design reach its pinnacle of stylishness, and by that point, with Pop and post-modern interiors, the phrases “Bel Disegno” and “Linea Italiana” entered the vocabulary of furniture design. Ever since the late 1970s and early 1980s, design in all forms began to be logoed by notable Italian fashion houses, such as Prada, Versace, Armani, Gucci and Moschino. Examples of classic pieces of Italian furniture include Zanussi’s rigorous, creative and streamlined washing machines and fridges, the “New Tone” sofas by Atrium, and most famously the innovative post-modern bookcase, made by Ettore Sottsass for the Memphis studio in 1981, inspired by Bob Dylan’s song Memphis Blues. The bookcase became a huge cultural icon and design event of the 1980’s.

i

n the days before fitted kitchens became the norm, dressers were a common sight within most homes. The drawers and cupboard offered a practical solution for storing pots and pans, plates and cutlery while the open shelves enabled you to show off your blue and white diner service and fine crystal glasses. Perhaps, the most well-known type of dresser is the Welsh dresser. Welsh dressers have been around for a long time and have a rich historical background. The piece often used for display and function at the same time was able to offer all the needs of a typical family. Typically the Welsh dresser was constructed in oak but over time many different woods have been used to make this piece. It is interesting to note that the Welsh dresser can look dramatically different depending on what is made from. For example, a dark stain on oak can look very rich and commanding the same piece painted a

creamy white can look very casual and take on a country house appearance. Today, the dresser can be found in many different designs but with more modern day features such as adjustable shelves, glazed panels, in-built wine racks and internal lighting, but at its heart the Welsh dressers still has that same beating heart. A timeless piece of freestanding kitchen furniture When choosing a dresser: - Think about the features you need: Plate rack, open shelving, wine rack, drawers, cupboards or a combinations of all these - Decide how you are going to use the dresser is it for storage, display or again a combination of the two? - If you have young children consider the height of the worktop and if possible opt for lockable doors and drawers.

Contry to popular belief not all dressers need to be openshelved. The pantry dresser offers all the visual attributes of a traditional looking dresser but with the added benefit of hidden storage. First developed in the early 1900s pantry cabinet and its many imitators soon became an essential fixture in kitchens and where often billed as a “pantry and kitchen in one. Available in a selection of different interior styles the pantry dresser is an ideal piece of furniture for any kitchen to be used for food storage. Pantry dressers are extremely versatile and can be either free standing or built-in. They allow you to see its entire contents at a glance and even enable you to conceal large and small appliances within them. This piece of furniture is a great for hiding away your kitchen essentials but acts as a timeless piece. www.beautifulkitchensblog.co.uk, www.shelfgenie.com

Counter Balance W

hen choosing kitchen counter tops, it can be easy to get confused by the many different material options that are available. Stone products like granite and quartz are among the more popular materials used for counter tops due to their strength and durability. By comparing the features and benefits of granite and quartz, you’ll be able to select the right material to meet your family’s needs. Here we take a look at these two stylish stones and answer some common questions

Granite WHAT IS IT? Granite is a natural product that is formed from minerals and stones. These materials are pressed together at extremely high pressure and temperatures deep within the earth, and eventually form granite stones as we know them which are then cut into slabs. Since the concentrations of the minerals that make up granite vary, each piece is distinct in colour, pattern and composition WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? There are wide variations in pattern and colour for granite, even within the same slab, bit it will always have an earthy white, pink or grey base tone. WHAT MAKES IT GREAT? Beauty: Each slab of granite is unique, making it a perfect choice for a countertop which is meant to be the centre of attention Durability: Granite resits scratches, heat and stains. If it does chip or scratch, surface polishing is usually enough to restore it, while the stone’s varied grain allows blemishes to blend in. IS IT EASY TO MAINTAIN? Granite is porous, and pores can be a breeding ground for bacteria. For that reason, many experts suggest sealing granite once a year.

Quartz WHAT IS QUARTZ? Quartz is a man-made product made from quartz crystals and resin. It is pressed, heated and coloured to resemble natural stone, but is actually an engineered product Quartz counter tops are an engineered stone, using quartz bonded with resin. Typically the ratio is 93% quarts to 7% resin. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? The choice of colour is virtually unlimited. With the quartz crystals creating a sparkle within the base colour. WHAT MAKES IT GREAT? Uniformity: The colour and pattern of the countertop remain consistent, making it easier to match to the rest of your dĂŠcor. With seams undetectable Durability: Quartz while extremely durable can be difficult to repair if damaged. Choose cleaning products carefully as harsh alkaline or acidic substances can harm the surface. IS IT EASY TO MAINTAIN? As mentioned above special attention should be taken when choosing the right the cleaning products. The benefit of a quartz countertop is that it does not need to be resealed.

& design Colour

C

olour has a profound impact on our lives. Many researchers have executed numerous experiments on colour psychology in an attempt to develop an understanding of the phenomena of human perception and results show that all people generally react similarly to colours and that colours evoke emotion.

With the oncoming transition of summer to autumn and then to winter the long bright days of summer are replaced with shorter hours of sunlight which can evoke emotions of sadness, depression and anxiety. Within interior design, designers look to combat these changes in the season with trends, Chromotherapy the practice of healing with colour is a trend that has been adopted by the interior community to help combat these emotions by using colour within the home. For example, blue and lavender are known to soothe and promote relaxation; red stands for energy and excitement; yellow promotes learning and curiosity; pink symbolizes nurturing and friendship; and green promotes emotional harmony and balance. So bid farewell to white walls and minimal-chic decor! To warm up your home and your heart all you need is paintbrushes, rollers and paint. It’s important to consider all the elements in the room: furniture, window treatments, pictures, even trinkets. If you don’t want to paint the entire room, you can still brighten it up with a few cleverly placed accent pieces in that colour.

Hallway/Foyer: Best colours: Off-white and shades of blue, pink or green represent hope and welcome Don’t recommend:

No rules

Why? These are all active spaces and can be painted bright colours or muted colours. The hallway is a reflection of your personality and is the only room in the home that can be painted any colour.

Study/Office Best Colours; Brighter colours are fine for these more active spaces. Choose any colour that you love. White and cream colours are excellent for home offices because they represent the metal element which supports mental clarity.

142

Don’t recommend; Darker tones or any colour that reflects the water element which is too floaty and ungrounded. Why? Home offices should be more active so that you can get things done. So you should use bolder colours here. This is not the room to be so cosy. Lemon yellow is ideal for this space if people need to concentrate: The colour of the sun not only accelerates learning, boosts vitality and energy but also enhances creativity, growth and combats depression by stimulating the leftside of the brain. Another colour to use is purple as this is great for good mental health.

Perfect Homes International Magazine www.hglivingbeautifully.com, www.liftupthyneighbour.com, www.sharonperry.ca

The Living Room Best colours: Earth tones, pastels, muted colours Don’t recommend: Reds, purples, bright colours - neons Why? The living room can be both a busy and active area of the home, as well as a refuge for members of the household to relax after work or school. The colours chosen for the living room can be especially important, and consideration should be taken when deciding on which colour schemes best fits the needs of the room, and the mood that is desired. As a balance, natural colours of browns and greens are good choice for the living room as they encourage vitality and abundance, as well as health and growth. For active go getters, fire colours in reds, oranges, pinks and purples, create a living space which promotes high energy and passion. This colour selection best suits those who use the living room area for activities related to career or work. Couples who spend time communicating in the living room area of the home may find that these colours energize conversations.

143

The Kitchen: Best Colours: Earth tones as well as the spectrum of yellow Don’t recommend; Reds, black, navy blue, grey, dark brown Why? Kitchens should be happy active spaces but they also already have a lot of fire and water. The best element to balance both is the earth element represented by earth tones and terra-cottas. These can be bright yellow, gold’s, rich terra-cotta or any other brighter colour. The colour yellow stimulates digestion, boosts the lymphatic system, and facilitates the removal of toxins and, in conjunction with white, immediately grants a sense of “cleanliness” to the space and highlights the natural colours of food. Green is also another good choice for the kitchen as it stills our hunger pangs and makes us feel sated.

The Bathroom Best colours: Earth tones, pastels, whites

Don’t recommend: Navy, dark brown, green or purple Why? The bathroom should be a sanctuary where you go to prepare yourself to face the day or retreat at night to prepare for sleep. The best colours for a bathroom include lighter shades of green, blues, pink, or white.

Black or grey, which correspond to the water element, make good accent colours or, you can use pastels or white with bright accents to enliven the space.

The Master Bedroom: Best colours: Earth tones, flesh tones, pastels including light sages, colours that are more muted. Don’t recommend: Bright colours, fiery colours such as bright reds, purples, pinks or oranges. Dark colours such as black, brown, greys, navy blue or dark green are also not recommended Why? Choosing the right colour for this room is probably the most important, as the choice of colour used not only affects your overall mood but your sleep pattern as well. Bedrooms should be calm spaces to promote rest and rejuvenation. Bright colours are too active for bedrooms and dark colours are too depressing. You want the

right amount of restfulness but not to the point that it is depressing. Red, the colour of passion is great for increasing sexual prowess but for those with a fiery temper it is like a rag to a bull! Many people believe the use of purple within the bedroom is a sign of luxury however the colour purple is known to stimulate the brain so sleeping in a purple room is more likely to promote vivid dreams or even nightmares resulting in less sleeping hours. The best colour choice is a soothing light blue as it encourages a better night’s sleep, promotes calm & soothing feelings and is thought to slow the heart rate and even reduce blood pressure.

The Child’s Bedroom/Nursery: Best Colours: Pastels pinks, dusky blues or mellow yellows are great for a child’s bedroom as they promote sleep and calm Don’t recommend: Red, purple, bright orange, black or grey Why? Avoid using energizing colours like red and other bold, bright colours in the bedroom as they can cause tempers to flare during playtime and too much hyperactive energy for the little ones to fall asleep too at night. Bright colours are good for playrooms but bedrooms need to be more subdued.

GIVE YOUR BEDROOM A MAKEOVER

O

ne of the easiest ways to makeover your bedroom is to change your bedding. Ideal bedding should draw the eye and express your sense of style while providing you with a cozy, comfortable place to rest your weary head.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

149

This season white sheets have been given the boot, replaced by vibrant colours and graphic designs meaning updating your bedroom is as simple as child’s play! Here we take a look at this season’s trends.

Go minimal with modern bedding The hottest trend in bedding is modern style with sleek lines. Inspired by the clean feel of Japanese bedding, modern bedding is meant to be tucked around the mattress on a platform that shows off the structure of the bed itself. Forget valances and long, draping coverlets. Choose a heavy but flat blanket or sham that fits your mattress with no excess fabric hanging over the edges. Use a small selection of decorative pillows (to accent your tightly-made bed. Choose sheets and covers in warm tones like cream, olive, dark teal and chocolate.

Choose textures and prints over fussy bedding The dust-gathering, fussy trend of using dozens of pillows and excess blankets has thankfully ended. A bed full off pillows and throws only adds extra work when it’s time to make the bed. Give your bedding pop and style by using coverlets, blankets and pillows with texture. Use no more than three accent pillows and add colour to the bed with a textured or printed blanket draped artfully over the foot of the bed.

Add some colourful bedding The easiest way to create a stunning new look is to change the colour of your bedding. Try a duvet cover or throw pillows in the season’s hottest colour trends, such as grey and orange or bold plum. Make an all-white bed and accent it with decorative pillows in jewel tones like turquoise or bright metallics. To bring the entire look together, invest in one or two accent pieces in your room that draw from the colour scheme of your bedding, such as a decorative vase, mirror or wall art.

Black is back Taking cues from this season’s runway fashions, modern, streamlined linens in classic black and white look crisp and super-stylish in just about any bedroom. Team with simple chrome accessories to create a dramatic effect

Last but not least! Pretty sheets promise your bedroom an instant pick-me-up, but new linens should always be laundered before making the bed. For the softest, sweet-smelling results, wash them with a fabric softener and scent booster and enjoy that blissful night’s sleep.

lluminate the night! Lighting within the bedroom is extremely important. No matter the size, the style or dĂŠcor, your bedroom is your sanctuary and it deserves to be lit correctly to handle everything you demand of it: like reading, relaxing, dressing and exercising.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Perfect PerfectHomes HomesInternational InternationalMagazine Magazine

157

Sadly many bedrooms are not lit properly as this part of the design process has been either an afterthought or aesthetics has taken over practicality. Most bedrooms are either too dark which is great for sleeping, but too little light hinders other activities taking place or too bright which has the opposite effect and means the bedroom is not being used to its full advantage. Bedroom lighting needs to be bright in the morning and intimate and atmospheric at night. Bedroom lighting traditionally ranges from basic to bold; dimmed to dramatic. So here we take a look at different ways to light up your dream bedroom but still ensuring it maintains an aspect or tranquillity and harmony. The most important lighting required within any bedroom is overhead ambient lighting. Whether that takes the form of a ceiling fan with a light kit, a ceiling pendant, a drum pendant, a semi-flush mount or even a chandelier, it doesn’t matter, what is important is that there is a source of ambient light overhead. Look for fixtures that will give off a soothing soft glow and provide the room with quality general illumination. You can even try putting your ambient lighting on a dimmer to more finely control the glow. For lighting at the bedside, there are a few different options available, you are not limited only to table lamps, although these might be perfect for you. Wall lamps with an added swing arm to better direct lighting right where it needs to go is a great option.

158

Perfect PerfectHomes HomesInternational InternationalMagazine Magazine

Lamps and sconces can also be used to brighten up vanities or dressing tables after all these areas need great lighting! Choose a great, unique and eye-catching lamp that can also serve as decoration in addition to illumination. Or place sconces on either side of a vanity mirror to help you put your best face forward. Highlighters also make a great impact in any bedroom design by accentuating the intriguing little details; such as a shelf featuring trinkets and photos, a very special piece of art on the wall, a vignette of statues or a mirror.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

159

Another area often neglected within the bedroom is the wardrobes and cabinet areas. Highlighters placed under the doors or within the recess at

the top can create soft romantic shades around the room and often look very good when lit with colour LCD lights.

Although the concept of the modern modular home has been around since the ‘60s, the architectural movement didn’t really seem to take off until the start of 2000 and today the Modular home has become cutting-edge in architecture, innovative with great bold designs, and packs a punch with impressive green building features in a word they have become magnificent!!

So what is a modular home? Modular homes simply put are kit homes, built indoors in a factory-like setting to an approved design specification. The sections are built and transported through the factory, similar to that of a car assembly line once all the pieces are assembled the finished modules are covered for protection and then transported to the build site. A modular home is not a mobile home it is simply a home that is built off-site as opposed to on-site. Once the sections arrive onsite they are placed on premade foundation, joined and completed by a builder, along with the help of electricians, plumbers etc etc.

How do modular homes differ from houses built on-site? Because modular homes are built indoors they can be completed in a matter of a few weeks as opposed to months. These home constructions do not see the typical on-site delays that are predominantly caused by the weather. In addition modular homes are built to a predisposed design so plug, light sockets, drain-always and duct work are already cut out making it quicker and easier for installation for the phase two: electricians, plumbers and kitchen fitters.

How long does it take to build a modular home? That depends on your design and the manufacturer, but some modular homes can be built in the factory in as little as 1-2 weeks and since modular pieces are built indoors, there’s never a weather delay. Once delivered to the build site the finished sections are then assembled with giant cranes, this process resembles a child building with Lego block and usually takes between 2-4 weeks.

So what are the benefits of a modular home? Modular homes are typically more affordable. Their shorter build time saves money on the overall construction because they are constructed in a factory. Modern ones also tend to be more energy efficient therefore your monthly utilities will be substantially lower than that of a constructed home. It is important to note, that an additional benefit to a modular home is that you can design and create the dream home you have always wanted. If you have always wanted a home with wooden beams or church style vaults now this can be achieved. Modular homes offer hundreds of personalized features that include but are not limited to: ceramic floors, solid surface countertops, various cabinet styles and wood species, exterior finishes, plumbing fixtures, essentially you can customize your own home.

Prefab homes have found their design place in today’s market because of their clean lines, multifunctioning spaces, and sustainable materials. These three elements define modern architecture and design qualities needed in today’s marketplace. If you are looking for luxury and affordability, a modular home may be the answer to your dreams, whether it will be your first home purchase, or if you want to downsize in retirement, today’s pre-built home options now mean you don’t have to compromise on quality. Significance: In a Zen garden, the small pieces of gravel or sand represent water. As a monk rakes this surface, he creates the texture of waves in an ocean. All around this surface, larger rocks stand protruding from the ocean as you might see when you stand at a rocky shore. Typically Zen design has one key stone representing the center of the world (called Shumi-sen) around which the builder places other smaller pieces, including at least one flat rock, known as a Worshiping Stone. The main stone represents Buddha, while smaller ones symbolize children, animals or tricksters. Some Zen gardens utilize sand and natural elements. This design illustrates that contradiction is part of all life, a philosophy central to Zen, Tao, and Shinto beliefs. Shrines may dot a Zen garden as places where Spirit and humankind come together. Gates around the garden designate walking paths. Bear in mind, however, that no two Zen gardens are alike. The garden is a very individual reflection meant as an insight to how the gardener interprets their world and Path.

Rock Features The pattern of the sand or gravel in a Zen garden inspires serenity. As a person rakes, it gives the mind time to release, organize and integrate specific thoughts, or none at all. Everything placed in a Zen garden design promotes relaxation, focus and peace. The rocks, as the eternal element of nature in a Zen garden, break out into five different categories. Kikyaku (the element of earth) is a reclining stone that sets near the foreground. Shintai (the element of water) is either horizontal or flat, and is often used as a base stone. Shigyo (the element of fire) arches and sets to the side of other shaped stones. Reisho (the element of metal) is vertical and low lying, demonstrating the firm nature of metal. Finally the Taido (the element of wood) is a vertical, tall stone implying trees and usually goes to the back of a design so it doesn’t impede the view. Stones may also characterize mountains or islands, and white rocks or sand cones reflect purity.

Zen

gardens with rocks, as we see today, began appearing in Japan approximately around the 11th century at Buddhist temples, having come from China with Buddhist monks. These gardens provided the monks with a serene place to walk and contemplate Buddha’s teachings. The garden design creates a serene spot in the landscape to promote a feeling of peace.

Simply Minimalist

A minimalistic garden is perfect for a person who is looking for a clean, smart, low maintenance garden. Ideal for young urban professionals, minimalist house enthusiasts, people who travel frequently, the weeding phobic etc. are likely to find this type of garden ideal. A

well designed minimalist garden can effectively provide you with an extra room. The key elements to a minimalistic garden is that it should feature sculptures, architectural planting, lighting, water if possible and great vistas. The need for plants should be minimal as youraim is to create a structure as much as garden that said plants within a minimimal garden create a splash of colour. When using plants ensure they add to the landscape and not overwhelm it. Lightening plays an important part in creating a minimalistic garden, not only does it illuminate areas which would otherwise be kept hidden it also creates shadows and allows you to alter the gardens mood during the twilight hours enabling you to enjoy your garden during the day and night. Another element critical to creating the perfect minimalist garden is water. Water creates serenity. The soft trickling of water brings harmony to a garden and the reflectivity qualities of water can be used to your advantage in the design process with the use of chrome, glass or aluminum.

Make the plants a bold feature but allow the hard landscape features to tie the whole design together

Use industrial elements to create a minimalist tidiness

It is important when creating a minimalistic garden you seek professional advise. A minimalistic garden may be easy to maintain but takes vision, and a keen eye to create.

Steel, glass and concrete are all materials heavily featured in many minimalist gardens and combining these industrial elements if done incorrectly can create a stark barren landscape. The ultimate goal when designing a minimalistic garden is to create clean lines, pure form and a strong sense of space within an architectural environment.

Another element critical to creating the perfect minimalist garden is water. Water creates serenity. The soft trickling of water brings harmony to a garden and the reflectivity qualities of water can be used to your advantage in the design process with the use of chrome, glass or aluminum.

Autumn styles: Autumn styles are crisp and fresh and the season’s colour palettes are a prelude to what’s to come, nestled right before the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season autumn provides a nice head start in gathering and preparing creative decorating ideas for the winter. Working with what nature has provided, vases can look really effective filled with berries and gourds. Hurricane centrepieces add a subtle and unique look to any room, simply by adding either one

or two pillar candles into the inside of a votive glass containers surrounding it with florals’ or berries at the base, brings a special kind of warmth and elegance. A bouquet of autumn inspired flowers like Chrysanthemums, Dahlias or Sunflowers intricately placed inside a cornucopia work really well. In addition, fruits and nuts work wonders to combine with red and green apples, pomegranites, oranges, chestnuts and acorns. This makes for a fantastic dining table piece.

GARDEN S ummer is coming to an end and as we move towards the autumn months, our gardens move from the bright pinks and yellows hues towards blazing rich vibrant colours of red, dark greens and purples.

In the gardening world autumn is the mellow season, because all the hectic flowering and reproductive activity of the summer is over, but with winter approaching, autumn is also the time to clear out the summer bedding and put in those bedding plants that will give your garden colour from autumn through the winter months and into the spring. The range of winter bedding plants has been extended greatly over the last ten years, with many ranges of winter flowering available to make the garden look fantastic, here at Agrojardin we offer an extensive varied selection from;

Pansies which come in variety of colours, violas are ideal for tubs and baskets, polyanthus with their brightly coloured flower stems, colourful Primroses available in many colours, Bellis daisy which give a lovely show of pink, red or white, Sweet Williams one of the last to come into flower, but well worth the wait, Myosotis (aka Forget-me-nots) with their abundance of small blue, pink or white flowers, and the old fashioned wallflower or ‘gillies’ that give such a lovely show and scent.

Magical Moroccan Interiors

T

he enchanting, warm look of Moroccan interior design is a delightful and captivating style for your home. Moroccan-style home decorating invites rich colours of the Middle East, with vibrant colours of red and rich orange inspired by amazing African sunsets, green and blues reflecting the sea of the area and tones off gold, light brown, yellow and silver taken from the surrounding desert.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Traditional Moroccan interior design is a blend of harmony, colour and texture it is very sumptuous, and even sensual. Influenced by Arabian, Spanish, French and Moorish influences Moroccan design is very unique and striking to look at. From the light fixtures to the tile work, Moroccan design is all about the finishing touches so trying to recreate a Moroccan theme in your home can be daunting. To create this stroking interior look you must incorporate the key elements of Moroccan interior:

Colour Colour is very much a part of the Moroccan way of life where, in day-to-day life, the eye is continually distracted by groupings of bright colour. Strong, saturated shades of emerald green, aubergine, turquoise, rust, burnt amber, burgundy, olive, cobalt blue, sprint green, are juxtaposed with terracotta, lemon yellow, mustard, navy, sunset red, orange, violet, coral pink. Your colour palette should reflect earth tones and the warmth of a magnificent sun rise coupled with vibrant turquoise. Deep, rich colours look fabulous; chocolate, aubergine, and jade/olive/ sage green along with silver and amber set against a wheat or beige background. For an easier option choose colours named after spices to get the exotic, ‘spicy’ feel: cinnamon, paprika, saffron, curry or burnt sienna. If you fancy something a little calmer for your choice of colour in your home don’t worry it is not absolutely necessary to go colour crazy. Accents of brighter colours can be used on a focal wall or just in accessories and fabrics

Décor Interior spaces are busy in pattern but simple in furniture. Sofas and tables are inviting and set low to the ground. Moroccan furnishings rely on elaborate wrought iron scroll work, mother of pearl inlay, ornately carved wood in high relief, richly hued upholstery, and intricate mosaic or terra cotta tile details. For furnishings don’t choose anything too fancy a simple, rustic style is best, in a dark coloured wood. Carved wood and wrought iron decoration work well together and add to the Moroccan feel. www.amideastabroad.com, www.cpb.co.uk. www.flickr.com , www.fotopedia.com, www.glamyou.com, www.homeshoppingspy.com, www.luxurytravelbeat.com, www.michellebuchanan.com. , www.moroccantiles.com, www.theteaconnection.com, www.news.travelhouse.co.uk, www.tucktakesoff.com

Luxurious & Lush Fabrics Fabrics in rich colours with intricate textures and designs are typical of Moroccan décor. Add throw pillows and cushions in abundance, and drape luxurious fabrics from furniture, window frames, and even the ceiling. Tie loose draped fabric back with heavy cords in high traffic areas to keep them out of the way. The quickest way to Moroccan interior design is using bright and colourful wool rugs, kilims or thin large rugs with traditional geometric patterns. Few leather ottomans, or Moroccan poufs, and soft large cushions made of soft decorating fabrics add comfort to Moroccan interior design.

Lighting Moroccan interior design lighting is really special. Not only does it create an ambient, seductive space, it also has the wonderful addition of pattern splashed out into the room during the evenings when switched on. Typically, light fittings are made of bronze, copper and wrought iron and they look outstanding when used as a run in a long hallway or above a large, low table in a living room or perhaps a collection of smaller pendants hung above the table at your dining area. Look for interesting pendants that can be hung at various height levels. You could select a magical assortment of colourful glass shades or keep them in simple, muted tones.

Tiles Tiles are a very important aspect to Moroccan interior design. Small tiles and mosaic designs add that touch of WOW into your Moroccan decor and can be used for both the walls and floors. You can also find some stunning pieces of furniture covered with mosaics such as Moroccan mirrors, coffee table tops and bathroom sinks, creating traditional Moroccan interior design with cheerful and bright colour contrasts. Getting to grips with the Moroccan look is no great challenge – there’s a lot to love about interiors that sing with real style, sophistication and warmth. It’s time we all welcomed a bit of Moroccan sunshine into our homes?

T

he summer sun is slowly beginning to set, and for the interior design enthusiasts amongst you, thoughts are probably turning to the small touches you can make to your home to get it in line with the latest trends for autumn.

Colour Palettes Neutrals are as raw as last season, with chalky whites and coarse linen tones, anchored by calming blacks. Pink has been replaced with mauves, such as ash rose and lilac brown, and darker tones such as port, damson and coffee-bean brown add a dramatic effect.

ngels Property Services is a family run business which has now been trading and growing with Word of mouth recommendations over the last twelve years. Our primary business started back in 2000 with the property management business headed by owner Nicola who has a wealth of experience in the hotel industry. With her partner Steve, the business has grown and developed over these years and we are proud to offer every kind of service that you could possibly relate to home ownership.

Property Management:We offer a property management service which is tailored to every one of our customers to suit their specific needs. Many of our customers live abroad and therefore require a trustworthy company to attend the property to ensure its well being and to take care of the day to day tasks that they are not present to entail. This could be cleaning drains after heavy rains, attending their alarm company should something be wrong with the alarm, checking the property on a regular basis to ensure the electricity, water and other utilities are in good working order or any other manner of issues that need to be dealt with in person when the owner is not present.

All of our staff, without exception, are covered by insurance which is important when someone is working in your home.

We have a very experienced team of cleaners who have been with us since the start of the business which means they are also able to tailor the cleaning as required for our clients.

• Secure key holding.

To give an idea of the vast amount of tasks that we can undertake on your behalf, whether you are present in Spain or not to take the worry and pressure out of home ownership meaning you can relax and enjoy your Costa del Sol home are: Regular inspection visits to:• Check security, locks, doors and windows. • Check watering of plants on terraces, garden boxes and indoors. • Check gas, water and electricity supply, turn these off on departure and back on for arrival if required. • Check property as a whole and report any damages such as leaks, humidity etc. • Regular airing by opening doors and windows for general ventilation.

• General day to day maintenance (we have a full time handy man who can normally fix problems within a couple of hours subject to availability of parts if needed). • Key holding service. • Air conditioning maintenance/ installation/inspection. • Maintenance to include: Carpenters, electricians, plumbers and decorators. • Television/satellite engineers. • Shopping service. • Arrangement of car hire. • Babysitting service. • Cot and high chair rental. • Rental of items for disabled people. • Attending properties for deliveries. • Administration, financial and insurance services. • Construction and renovation services.

Apart from the above mentioned inspection visits we can also provide the following services.

• Cleaning and laundry.

• Catering / party organizing.

• Airport transfers / taxi reservations.

Light, Clarity & Transparency

T

oday’s home interiors have adopted a more open living feel, where once there where sturdy walls that defined a specific room now the boundaries between dining rooms, kitchens and living rooms have become blurred. Over the last few years, the trend to adopt an open living concept yet define areas within the home has taken on new dimension with the use of glass wall room dividers or glass folding sliding doors. Glass is a beautiful interior element when added to your home dÊcor and is an excellent choice to define areas within the home as it creates separation between rooms yet still allows the natural light to filter through into the room restricting the stuffy claustrophobic feeling walls sometimes create. Although open living is the current trend in home dÊcor many households still require the need to separate two rooms, whether it be to keep noise out of another room, restrict cooking smells or keep the heat in glass dividers offer this alternative yet providing an unrestricted outlook so as a mother you can view what your children are doing in the next room without actually having to hear the noise they are creating! Here we take a look at a few examples:

This glass divider between the kitchen and dining area creates two separate dining areas within one space. The clever placement creates a formal and casual feeling to each room without ruining the overall design.

For a large area – like a loft having the whole area open plan and visible can become very messy, these frosted glass panels are a great alternative as they allow the light to filter through but restrict unsightly areas such as the sink

of what is happening in the next room but clearly define the dining area as the frames have been cleverly matched to the dining room furniture.

The use of glass as a partisan between the bedroom and master bathroom has created an illusion of space.

TILE TRENDS Tiles play a huge part in the finished look of any room in the house, limited not just to the bathroom and kitchen tiles have evolved to become a staple part of an interior designer’s armoury.

Here we take a look at some of the current trends in tiles...

Perfect Homes International Magazine

275

Open Plan Living Trends in architectural design over recent years have now filtered into mainstream interior design where we now see more and more people knocking down interior walls to create vast openplan living spaces. Open plan living is a key trend that can be used to create a flow between rooms, combining a relaxed and friendly living room and dining room into one area. This trend sees the development of larger format tiles such as hardwearing Porcelain Tiles, Highly polished and light reflecting Granite Tiles and Riven Slate Tiles, which are perfect for you to create seamless open-plan designs.

Get the look To get the most out of the trend for open plan living, create zones to clearly define activity areas with different surfaces from tiles to real wood flooring. Separate each living space with a well-defined flooring style, stained wood works effortlessly with beige large tiles to separate the kitchen and dining area.

www.freshpalace.com, www.rules.sk

Zoning Areas & Feature walls With today’s open plan living the barrier between rooms can sometimes be blurred. Bring an open plan living area up to date with a statement feature wall using oversized polished porcelain tiles. Contrast neutral tones for a sleek minimalist look against a vivid bold colour to define the separating rooms this look will perfectly complement your contemporary home.

Get the look To define the areas clearly use contrasting colours, creams, beiges and neutral tones with dark wooden elements. Arteak wooden floors are perfect against split face Mosaic & Crystal ceramic tiles. A Feature walls of natural stone stands out beautifully and defines the open space when set against a backdrop of colour. Try mocha browns, or caramels

Patterned Tiles Today’s interest in Victorian charm has led to the resurgence in patterned tile flooring. With more and more Victorian homes being re-furbished utilise the era’s opulent designs. Recreate Victorian elegance using intricate floor tiles for an eye-catching effect that immediately sets the ambience in any room. Combine with corner and border designs to create a stunning statement floor.

High Luxe Treat yourself to the ultimate in luxurious spa chic by combining jewel-like mosaics with large format sparkly quartz tiles for a look that really makes a statement.

Get the look Gloss, high sheen and gloss again. This is what makes a luxe bathroom. To give your bathroom a luxury hotel feeling use large ceramic jewelled tiles. Large tiles are a wonderful option for spacious bathrooms, especially ones with large windows to bring in ample amounts of sunshine. 2013

Being in college is costly and your college bound student won’t have a ton of money for entertainment. That is where the Roku comes in. The Roku 3 allows you to stream over 750 channels, along with connecting and streaming movies from your favorite movie services (Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime). It also allows you to stream music. The Roku 3 will stream from all the big music services, including Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Cloud Plays, Rdio, etc. Many of the music services have a free versions that will toss in an advertisement every now and then, but it’s not as bad as local broadcast radio stations, and you get to customize what you want to listen to. If you don’t like what is on any of the channels, you can play music from your tablet, or smartphone. The most attractive part of this gadget is th remote. If you want to watch a movie, and your roommate is about to hit the sack, you c a n plug a set of headphones into the remote and it plays the sound through the remote, and into your headphones, so you don’t disturb them. www.fatwallet.com

BioLite CampStove

First of all, it efficiently burns wood and other bio-matter that can be collected around your site or on a short hike. The BioLite is also quick to light and heats up fast, eliminating the hassle of starting a fire and getting those growling stomachs satisfied faster. It weighs less than 1 kg and folds for easy packing. And if that doesn’t sell the device, here’s that amazing perk: in addition to fueling the cooking fire, the BioLite collects escaping heat and converts it to electricity that can be used to charge your gadgets. This is great for keeping torches lit, and smartphones charged, and comes in handy when you need to use the GPS or look up song lyrics for those campfire sing-a-longs. The BioLite CampStove can be ordered through the BioLite website at www.biolitestove.com

Marbella

Interview by Annabell Milnes-Smith

Maurizio Sardo Director General of Domosat, The Giant of Home Cinema and Automation centres Reveals their further expansion within his magnificent showroom in San Pedro de Alcantara and gives an insight into their latest ..... State-of-the-Art Systems

O

nce again, I was thrilled to have been given the opportunity of interviewing Maurizio Sardo in his showroom in San Pedro de Alcantara, to discover the latest developments at Domosat. To say the showroom is spectacular is an understatement. It covers 500 square metres with three cinema rooms and demonstration rooms downstairs. On arrival, I am invited into one of the cinema rooms which is beautifully sound-proofed, perfect to conduct the interview.

I simply marvel at my surroundings. Maurizio, seeing my expression and remarks, “Every time people come and see the showroom, they say it is the best they have seen in Spain. It is true. I have many friends who are in the same kind of business, but this really is the best. Indeed by the end of October he will have a golf and car simulator in one of his cinema rooms, creating a playroom effect. In the meantime, clients on entering the hallowed establishment,

will be given demonstrations and be able to see firsthand how Domosat can design their dream systems. As I can see Maurizio, your cinema rooms are the latest in state-of-the-art in home entertainment. Can you give me the process of inception to conception and some examples of residential and commercial systems you have installed? “Basically the design is the same as the home automation system. The client will come in and many who have bought a new house will say they have an empty basement and want to design a cinema room or a playroom where we do, as the Americans say, build a box inside a box. We design everything from scratch. We initially present 3D plans so that the client can get a real feeling of what they are going to get and see the finished product. We then do the sound-proofing making sure the sound does not travel to the rest of the house, using special acoustic materials that absorb sound,

together with onsite coordination. We supply full decorative service and installation; from hi-tech cinema chairs to the smallest details. We work with top of the range brands such Wilson Audio, Krell, Martin Logan, SIM2..... With the cinema room part, what we are beginning to do a lot more of now is open-plan cinema/playrooms as people are not just looking for the traditional cinema rooms with three rows of seats. We have just finished a project with a cinema room with a golf and car simulator, so you can watch a movie, play golf and drive a car! We have also installed a Vantage lighting control system in the Picasso Museum. The residential projects have mainly been in urbanisations. We have installed systems in over 10 luxury communities including El Embrujo de Banus and at the moment we are installing a hi-tech system in La Reserva Sierra Blanca luxury complex.

Exclusive in Spain only to Domosat

Innovators in Led Lighting

The story continues.. Now moving onto Domosat’s home automation systems. Just imagine waking in the morning to peaceful sounds of your favourite music, curtains sliding open and the roll-deck of the swimming pool opening up, all at the touch of a button. This is quite literally just a glimpse of one of the systems that a client can expect when they come to Domosat. They will depart knowing that they will realise all their dream systems for their new home. Domosat only uses the Rolls Royce of systems, Vantage and AMX which are exclusive to Domosat. I was eager to discover more about Domosat’s unrivalled expertise within this specialised field. Addressing Maurizio I asked him to give me an insight into their home automation systems with some examples of ones they have installed here in Spain. “Yes the main systems we use are Vantage together with AMX. We have been using them for fifteen years now. They are indeed the Rolls Royce of home installation systems. Over that time we have been doing very high end home automation systems, over 1500. These have included such areas as La Zagaleta, Sierra Blanca, Sotogrande, Gibraltar and internationally we have installed systems in London, France, Angola, Gabon, and Brazil. We are now also working on projects in Morocco as well as Ibiza where the demand is so high that we have recently opened a new showroom there. In Ibiza, do you offer the same products there or are they tailor-made for the Island? “They are pretty much the same systems. We are installing many Domosat systems and Bang & Olufsen installations there.” I know that many celebrities now reside there, is there a possibility that just this one time you may be able to reveal one or two who have had systems installed? “No because we have to sign confidentiality agreements but I can guarantee you that in the last six months we have done some very big installations for footballers and music industry moguls.” Referring back to the systems you have installed globally, how did you manage to secure these contracts? “Many of them are through word of mouth and through advertising, but also have been in Marbella for over 32 years and started the business 20 years ago; our Company and reputation are well established.”

I asked Maurizio to describe in layman’s terms the exact definition of a home installation system. “Home installations systems, especially nowadays, where most people have an Iphone or an Ipad, who can access their email or You Tube, can now control their systems away from their house. You can pick up your iphone or ipad control the lights, temperature; disconnect the alarm system with a touch of your finger.” Domosat is irrefutably regarded as the leader in Home Automation systems. How have you managed to stay at the top?

“We were the first company here in Marbella and probably in Spain providing home automation systems. We have managed to stay on top because we joined forces with the best manufacturers so we are also able to supply the best possible equipment and give our clients the best service.” When a client initially contacts you to install a system, can you tell me the process you take them through, from when the initial idea materializes through to completion? “Basically what we do is ‘turnkey’ projects. Initially when we meet with the client the most important thing for us is to find out about their way of life. Are they married, single, have kids? How are they going to use the house? How are they going to use the system? That is in our initial meeting. We will then sit down with the client, their architect and decorator and customise the system for them. It is like when you go to buy a car. You sit down with the car dealer who asks what colour would you like, what wheels, and what interior. Leather, suede, walnut or aluminium. We install our systems tailor made for our clients. We then provide the client with plans and quotations. Once the client has accepted the quote, we coordinate the installation with the project manager of the house from the initial construction through to the completion of the project. We then show the client how to use and manage the system and we sign a maintenance contract where the client would pay a certain amount every month where they can have 7 days a week service at any time the client needs us. That is another reason is makes us one of the best Company’s on the coast. Your after service is second to none. However what happens if there is a power surge and knocks out the entire system. “If there is a power surge and it knocks out the electricity, the systems won’t work, unfortunately we cannot perform miracles! However in most big houses we recommend we install a power generator so that if there is a power surge the

generator will kick in and the system will keep working.”

I gather all the systems you install are all certified and officially approved by the manufacturer. “Yes, these include Vantage, AMX, KNX, Loewe, and many more that are part of the Cedia Group which is an American professional certification of installers. Most of these systems come from the USA so another reason we manage to stay on top is that I travel once a year to Indianapolis to the Cedia Show to pick up and learn about new technology. I will learn about them there and then bring them here and install them in client’s houses. We were the first company to do that. We also go to another show called ISE in Amsterdam every year, and do the same thing. As we have operated for so many years, we have developed a very close relationship with most manufacturers and distributors.

THE TEAM You have a large team at Domosat. Please can you let me know who heads up the team alongside you and their previous experience? “Without a shadow of a doubt, the most important part that has led to the success of Domosat is the team. I believe in the concept that the showroom is very important, the products are very important but what is integral to the success of Domosat, is the team. My right hand man, Miguel Angel is our Project Director has been with me for 14 years now together with my sister Barbara who manages all our branches. Most of my technical team members have been with me right from the beginning of Domosat. We send them on regular training so that every time a manufacturer comes out with a new system I will send them to England, Barcelona, Madrid, France or Belgium; wherever the head offices are so that they can study the new technology, systems and programming.

Can the Domosat systems save you money by conserving electricity and optimizing your heat and air conditioning systems? “Yes they do save money. Air conditioning systems, for example, are very much like hotels ones. If you leave a window open the system will cut off. We also do a lot of work where we use motion sensors for corridors so if you have got kids running around the house, the lights will come on and off, so that they are not left on all day which kids often do. Also with the system if you dim light you will be saving electricity.”

I also have two IT engineers who do all the programming. I don’t think there is a company in Marbella that has two in-house programmers fully dedicated to this purpose. The team are vital to Domosat because at the end of the day, the team are the ones that have to deal with the clients. They can do anything from a 5000€ television installation to a 2 million euro project.” With a steadfast team behind him and the continuing success and expansion of Domosat, Maurizio is clearly not going to stop there. He has come up with a new branch to Domosat entirely based on his longevity within the business for 20 years. He noticed over that time, having continuous collaboration with electricians, under floor heating installers, plumbers and other technicians, he realised how much better it would be for Domosat and his clients having them all on the same premises.

To this end, he is now working on establishing “DOMOSAT ALL IN ONE” with an office upstairs in their showroom exclusively dedicated to this. Says Maurizio, “DOMOSAT ALL IN ONE” will enable us to do comprehensive ‘turnkey’ projects and have a place where all professionals/companies involved in a project and customers can all meet together. However, more about that in next month’s edition of Perfect Homes.” On a final note by this writer, she is certainly looking forward to next month’s interview, and gaining a further insight into “DOMOSAT ALL IN ONE”. Until then, a visit to his showroom is a must for those who wish to transform their home into the home of their dreams.
