Ecologically friendly homes have been in development for some time, improving more and more each year. Although purchasing a home is a huge financial responsibility, the savings reaped in the overall reduction of other costs such as electricity and hot water make it possible for almost any average household to afford a home designed to protect the environment. Not only is energy produced by solar panels and wind turbines a cost effective alternative to fossil fuels, their production and use cause little to no pollution while also preserving the earth’s natural resources. ocated in the northern side of the Cyclades, Tinos is the third largest island of the island formation. Known as the “Island of Madonna”, Tinos is the greatest center of pilgrimage in Greece. Within its landscape of rugged, rocky hills lay more than 40 villages, like marble fragments of an ancient statue scattered across the hills. The island is famous for its unspoiled architecture, its picturesque villages and beautiful scenery. More than

a thousand churches can be found on slopes and hilltops, a thousand or so dovecotes, while masterpieces of local architecture and tens of derelict windmills are found in its gullies and valleys. The scenery is lined by hundreds of kilometers of dry stonewalls that make the landscape unique. The residence is situated on a steep sloped rocky plot facing south, overlooking the Aegean Sea. The site offers protection
from the prevailing winds and a natural plateau which from the beginning was identified as the optimal location for the residence as it would minimize the impact to the landscape due to excavation. It is a single-level structure and has a surface of 198 square meters. The location allows benefiting from wonderful and panoramic views of the landscape and seascape. Our approach to the program was Doric. Only the
essential features and programmatic elements to sustain a comfortable stay were incorporated in the design. Our goal was to integrate the building into the landscape like it was part of it. The living space is covered by a rimless pool that produces a visual effect of the water extending to the horizon, vanishing and merging with the seascape. From a distance especially if viewed from the path of approach, on ahigher ground,
the only visible feature of the house is the sea like surface of the pool. The water during the day reflects the surroundings and during the night, the star filled night sky.The mirroring pool of water carefully positioned on the landscape evokes memories of the optical phenomenon of the mirage from which the project was named.

The most of the visible construction materials were extracted from the vicinity and were used to make the house ‘disappear’ into the scenery. Local techniques were also borrowed like the characteristic dry wall construction found in abundance in the island. This technique was implemented with minor modifications; on the side embankment walls in each side of the pool volume.The local materials have a low impact on the environment and they are very efficient as insulating materials. The rear walls are made of retained earth and have layers of vegetation that regulates the temperature and cools the environment through evaporation. The pool acting as roof provides thermal insulation and protection from solar radiation and heat transmittance. We wanted to make a house fused with its surroundings, an invisible oasis hidden from the unsuspected eyes. The house is acts almost like an observation post as it clings to the rocks and oversees the dramatic cascading landscape. A landscape left almost intact due to the implemented design strategy and the careful selection of materials. VILLA D The site of the holiday home in Rhodes/ Greece yet possess characteristics and outstanding qualities, which we only attempted to frame with our design. The site is located three meters above a coastal road, which is bordered by a natural stonewall that has been equally continued for our proposal. On the one hand the continuation of the found wall generates a high level of privacy, while on the other hand it relates to the given situation in this area, which we were tempted to preserve as much as possible. The holiday home was designed for a couple. They wished a separate area for guests, which we mostly embedded in the given topography by integrating the shady tree population and without generating an equally visible volume. At first sight the typology of the building seems to be strange compared with the context. However this first impression will be refuted by the choreography of the building, which is precisely orientated at the context. While from a formal point of view the building relates to the found eroded rocks and the washed away shoreline, the entrance was generated by an interruption in the continuous natural stonewall, which leads one at first „under“ the site. Skylights show the path up to the main living area. The generated twist focuses our sight towards the ocean, whereas the surrounding walls only serve as a frame of the context. Thus a spatial division of the different uses was avoided where possible, as well as a differentiation of interior- and exterior spaces. Most important was to prevent a limitation of the magnificent view. 24

The challenge in this design lies in construction and the involved climate technology. The construction of the building above ground is planned as a prefabricated timber structure finished with a white plaster, including the roof. Because all surfaces are inclined and the temperature in that area does not go below zero degrees, this finishing is doubtlessly possible, which is proofed since many years in traditional old buildings close to that site. The lightweight construction was chosen because of the way it will be used and climatic circumstances. As the holiday home will be mainly used for spontaneous short-term visits, a quick cool down is necessary. Thus long time periods of cooling down and saving, as it occurs with massive construction, is not advantageous in that case. Through a mechanically controlled opening in the roof a wellknown chimney effect will be activated, which starts at the massive base plate in the garage from where integrated cable ducts lead cooled air through the building. An additional cooling effect will be provided by the evaporation of the pool. The triangle-shaped photovoltaics on the roof provides the building with energy and enables a self-sufficient living. Areas, which are kept spatially open will profit from cantilevers, which keep these areas shaded.

Edgeland House is about healing the land and ameliorating the scars of the site’s industrial past. The project raises awareness about a diminishing natural landscape and its finite resources by creating a balance between the surrounding industrial zone and the natural river residing on the opposite side of the site. Both visually and functionally, Edgeland House touches on architecture as site-specific installation art and as an extension of the landscape. This project sets new standards for sustainability while providing great aesthetic qualities through its small footprint and integrated mechanical features. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center collaborated to reintroduce over 40 native species of plants and wildflowers to the Edgeland House green roof and site, serving to help protect the local ecosystem. ver the past decade DIY stores have been closing rapidly and some might argue that the demise of DIY is down to the fact that home ownership is on the decline, as more of us are forced to rent, unable to get on the property ladder. Yet, undeniably, today’s disposable generation of 20- and 30-somethings don’t seem to possess the traditional “dad skills” of our past generations and would rather buy new than make do and mend. During the 90’s DIY home improvement shows used to be all the rage – Changing Rooms, Grand Designs and DIY SOS all had primetime television shows but now the focus has shifted being replaced by reality shows such as Towie, X-Factor & Strictly Come Dancing to name but a few. Whilst this skillset shift bods well for tradesman with people today increasingly employing professionals to undertake the work for them, we ask, WHY HAS THE MODERN MAN FALLEN OUT OF LOVE WITH DIY? Firstly modern men have no idea how to carry out basic DIY jobs around the home - with millions unable to even change a light bulb. Laziness and hectic lifestyles seem to be the main reason however some would say that education also plays a part, gone are the days or woodshop & metal work instead replaced by IT & media studies this in turn has turned today’s men into a nation of DIY dunces

Bal Mattu, founder of tradesman marketplace website Comcero.com, which commissioned the research, said: ‘There was a time when you could rely on almost any man when it came to DIY jobs in the home. But it seems to be a sign of the times that nowadays, even the most basic of jobs like changing a light bulb or replacing a fuse are too difficult for some men’. While one in five put their poor DIY skills down to laziness, another 22% claimed they were simply too busy to do the jobs themselves, add to that the daunting task of visiting your local DIY store to be amazed and astonished at the prices it seems little wonder that most young men are turning to employing the professionals.

Tiny Homes for Eco Adventures Rental income opportunities aside, most tiny home owners buy them to live in. It gives them access to a lifestyle that just isn’t possible in a traditional house. For adventurous types, attach your tiny home to your vehicle and use it to travel the country. Another big draw of living in a miniature house is a reduced environmental impact. Tiny homes are incredibly efficient, needing little water or electricity; they also cost less to maintain, renovate and furnish. Moreover, they tend to be built with environment-friendly materials. A number of homeowners choose to go off-the-grid altogether, installing solar panels to their roof. Since the average micro home only has six light bulbs, creating enough electricity is easy. Other eco-friendly options include green rooftops, grey water recycling, even wind-powered generators. Living in such a small space means you consume less and create a smaller carbon footprint – but the downside composting toilets can take some getting used to.
Tiny Home, Big Profit Timing is another big factor in the micro home’s rise in popularity.
