A LAND OF ENCHANTING BEAUTY The American Southwest has long attracted artists from around the world due to the resplendent natural light and its effect on the dramatic landscape. Additionally, a pleasantly mild climate makes New Mexico an enticing place to reside for those who seek an outdoor lifestyle. Santa Fe, in particular, has become a coveted destination for luxury home buyers with its distinctive Pueblo architecture, rich culture and an average of 300 days of sunshine annually. On the north side of the city, just eight minutes from the downtown district, is one of Santa Fe’s most majestic estates. The residence maintains a rare combination of South-western style with unmistakably European influences offering a surprising 12,500 square foot main house. Accommodating yet not invasive, the sprawling residence and guest house are characterized by an assortment of inimitable materials converging into an irreplaceable masterpiece.

The Tuscan inspired exterior is an elegant blend of local adobe and native stonework, with a handmade Spanish tile roof. Beautifully crafted windows and doors and think pillared columns frame the covered patio areas from that of the open plan pool area. This picture-perfect setting made up of lush professionally landscaped grounds, cascading water fountains, and posh courtyards highlighted by the extensive use of stone and natural elements, offers a private oasis away from everyday life, and captures the epitome of luxurious living. Adding to that its numerous summer terraces this property is an unrivalled destination for gracious living and entertaining. If you love pale colours and soft neutrals, look away now.

with yellow being a standout shade, along with luminous accents of orange, neon pink and turquoise.

This spring is the time to embrace an explosion of colour. The patterns and palette we’re going to see coming through this season are bold, cheerful and optimistic,

But fear not – the key word for 2014 is ‘accent’, and don’t despair as these colours also look great with taupe and ever-popular greys.

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Spice

Teal Last year’s print designs featuring nature and woodland creatures will give way to lush, green botanicals, ethnic designs with a strong Moroccan or Mexican influence, as well as lots of strong, graphic geometrics.

Provence Country

Vintage

Vintage will also continue to be a massive trend, as our love of shabby chic sees us delving back into the past to take inspiration for the future, but always with a modern twist. Expect to see lots of lace and chintzy, floral vintage prints on a white background, which reflects our passion for handmade and old-fashioned crafts like knitting, crochet and stitching. Eastern Design Influence for Luxury Interiors

18

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Add some flavour to your everyday style by curating an inspired interior space. Create a global home by mixing modern and vintage pieces of interest with eastern influences. From minimalist patterns to bold designs, this trend is sure to take hold in 2014! Rugs, storage containers, decorative accents, tapestries, fabrics in silk and velvet, furniture, tiling and bedspreads can all be used to bring eastern styles to the forefront of your space. There will also be a burgeoning demand for products made from the unique woods that grow in the region’s many countries (like Thailand’s teak, monkey and mango timber).

Black & White

The biggest sartorial statement from 2013’s runways will make a big splash in the home sphere in 2014. Expect to see this classic pairing everywhere – on textiles and in hardware form. Bold designers may even pair the two in unexpected ways, think painting the walls of a room white and its ceiling black.

Sunny Side Of The Street

Don’t like pastels? Perhaps you’ll want to add this season’s brightest shade to your home: Yellow. Yes, splashing a bit of sunshine throughout your space will be a thing to do in 2014. Go bold by repainting a dresser or coffee table in the eye-popping shade or keep things subtle by adding yellow accessories (like a jewellery box or bookend) to a focal point shelf in your home. Perfect Pastels Pantone recently dubbed Radiant Orchid the colour of 2014, saying the hue exuded “confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination.” The decision speaks to a larger trend that will see less-intense hues take prominence over the bright neons we’ve been seeing in years past. Add the softer shades to your home’s decor via throw pillows or chic dining room linens. 22

Industrial Interior IDesign

24

Perfect Homes International Magazine

E

very aspect of Industrial interior design matters. So what does that mean? Simply that this concept is based largely upon the space being honest with its components i.e. everything from the construction to the selected furniture and items are boldly on display. That’s why an open space like a loft is great for this style.

More or less every man-made object around you is the result of an industrial designer’s skill and talent whether it’s a table or useable gadget like a food mixer. Industrial interior design is often the concept selected for loft apartments off refurbished warehouse’s and factories. The best thing about industrial interior design is that you can achieve the look on a budget in particular you are looking for old industrial looking objects that are made from steel, metal or wood which look best when worn down or salvaged. The overall style should be an unfinished look with a focus on raw and rough surfaces with clean, flat surfaces. This concept is often blended with minimalism therefore you should avoid having lots of furniture or object or at least be able to hide them in good well thoughtout .

Colour: Your colour palette should steer clear of bright, bold colour instead you are looking for warn, neutral tones to fill your space. Shades and tones of grey work really great mixed up with white to add a crisp, clean look.

Key elements: n natural exposed brickwork n steel structure: beams, columns n concrete: show me concrete n rough timbers: wood n clutter free n great storage n abulous light fittings: light n interesting furniture

Walls: Should you be fortunate to have walls in your house that are unfinished old or exposed then that is a bonus that can add to your industrial style. For full effect you could even try to make them look even more worn. Painted walls work best with a mix of large pieces of art hanging.

Floor: As with minimalism a great floor option is polished concrete. It can be as rough and patchy as it wants to be and will still look great. Timber or stone flooring are also good finishes that will help you achieve the industrial look.

Decor: It is the decor that brings softness into your space so try to find some seriously comfy sofas and big scatter cushions to work alongside the ‘industrial’ type objects. Plants will inject life and colour into any environment so look for a few really great large leaf plants and some significant pots to house them.

Lighting: Free standing floor lamps are a wonderful source of lighting for this look. Try to add a few amazing looking pendants into your space like metal structured lighting typical of a factory work space.

The kitchen is the central point of the house, encouraging communication throughout the entire home. With its white minimal Krion workstation and attached glass breakfast bar, it has exquisite views of the out door patio, pool, and of course the coastline. Alternatively there is also an oval shaped informal dining area which over looks the pool and a more casual sofa area perfect for relaxing. The kitchen and dining room both are adjacent to an interior water feature. This water feature comes with a herb garden, which can be accessed by stepping stones. This feature proving that nature is definitely part of the home! Access through the sliding glass doors and you can step out onto your covered pergola, with casual sofas as well as an additional outside formal dining. Look to the right and you will see the pool and Jacuzzi, which has a covered

lounge area. Look to the left and follow the terrace around, taking in the views of Marbella & San Pedro. This will bring you to more outdoor seating options and also can take you back inside to the formal living room. On the terrace there is a lovely range of seating options. A tucked away daybed, for those escape or reading moments, a hanging daybed for those sleepy moments, and of course seating area ideal for entertaining. Back inside the house, follow the stairs down and you will find the first of two master bedrooms. This one is called the “Winter Bedroom”. All the objects in this bedroom are in different hues of grey or silver, making it a very luxurious and connected bedroom. The bedroom also has an en-suite bathroom and two walk-in wardrobes. With views to the ocean, this bedroom is a lovely place to retreat to. Also on the lower level is a self-

contained apartment, complete with a kitchenette. To finish off the lower floor is a gymnasium with two Turkish baths/saunas. Discreet lighting strips under each stair leads you safely back upstairs to the street level. Move past the entrance foyer and you will find another staircase. After taking a peak at the two en-suite bedrooms and the study, make your way up the staircase, which is lit via a skylight. At the top of this staircase is the “Summer Bedroom”. This bedroom, like the winter one, has an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. However, the difference is noticeable in the colour scheme. The bedroom is fitted with dark grey hues and striking geometric wallpaper featuring as the back wall to the bed and headboard. The bedroom has private views to the coastline and the

surrounding environment. With the storage units and doors being finished with a dark wood, it is a sophisticated contrast to the lighter wooden floor. The wardrobe is fitted with motion sensor lighting, making it very modern, convenient and also ecofriendly. As the sun sets over the Mediterranean and the sophisticated interior and exterior lighting becomes noticeable, the atmosphere changes. Transforming this home into a glamorous setting perfect for entertaining on the terrace or having a cosy dinner indoors. This home is an energetic combination of sophistication, style, & relaxation. Runway Rugs

Rugs occupy an ever more central position in floor fashions as the trend in hard flooring continues. With more people choosing hardwood or tiles for their homes, wide expanses of bare floors can make an interior feel cold and unwelcoming. This is where a strategic placement of rugs can help.

A rug helps define areas, muffles noise, keeps the dust down and provides warmth. In addition to that, rugs also greatly enhance the aesthetics of a room by providing a finishing touch. Replacing or adding a rug to your interior design is one of the easiest and cost effective ways of bringing your interiors up to date with current trends. But with so many rugs and styles to choose from it’s not easy picking out what’s on trend. Here we look at a few key trends for 2014

Modern Florals Floral rugs have been in and out of style for years but now there back and they are most definitely bold, think Rock n Roll not Grandma. Look out for large floral motifs to give a modern feel and immediate impact in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. www.briers.ca

60

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Geometric Following the trend of being bold geometric rugs will always make a statement. Our advice is to choose a colour that either complements or contrasts with other colour shades in the room. They don’t come bolder than Geometry by Oriental Weavers.

www.newyorkspacesmag.com

Clash of Colours This is always fun but don’t think this style needs to bold and brash. For 2014 try clashing pastel colours and softer patterns like Paisley and florals. This style is also great for children’s rooms when they’ve grown out of the traditional kiddy rugs.

Folk and Craft The key to this trend is to let go of your desire to match your rug to your current scheme, this trend is all about individualism so think creatively get a rug that matches your personality. From patchwork, vintage, retro to homemade style anything goes. The trick to this trend is to go for bright colours and characterful patterns such as Nomadic from Plantation Rugs

www.camerontradingpost.com, www.overstock.com

Heritage Traditional patterns are making a comeback, look for neutral palette shades with accent colours, go for slightly bolder designs

Tartan and Checks A British Classic and with the number of styles and colours of rugs available now there’s no reason why this style can’t be contemporary too. Greens, yellows, blues and bright pink are on trend for 2014, so if you’re looking for a modern twist to this old faithful pattern try using these colours. What’s great about Tartan and Check style is that it’s difficult to go wrong. Mix, match or clash they’ll always look good and always make a statement. Use bright colours for contemporary and classic colours for a cosier feel.

Striking light

Created from a series of tiny crystal pieces suspended by nickel plated rings assembled by hand, the Ozero custom-made crystal chandelier multiplies the light source and offers a beautiful and glittery atmosphere

The piece was envisioned by Janos Heder and has the ability of turning your home into a more harmonious place to live, while defying spaces. The project is based on the idea that crystal makes a room more special and creates an outstanding point of reference. The beauty of this custom-made chandelier can be explained by the fact that each tiny piece of crystal features an impressive brilliance that refracts the light into a rainbow of colours spreading inside the room. Giving any room a warm and soft light, the custom-made chandelier becomes a beautiful piece of your personal universe. www.archiexpo.com

The taste of luxury Deviehl, London based company designed cups which make drinking coffee a luxury pleasure Andreas Bos and Jonathan Strauss, Deviehl’s founders focussed their complimentary skills and experience in luxury watchmaking, precision engineering and product innovation to design the perfect coffee cup. They managed to produce something that the world didn’t know it was missing. Perfect Balance French interior designer and architect Grégoire de Lafforest has created a truly contemporary lounge chair which, behind its apparent simplicity, conceals a wellthought interplay of contrasting elements The elegant ‘Opper’ chair juxtaposes the rigid, cool Carrara marble volume of its base with the warm, softer leather seat inspired by 1970’s motorbike saddles, all the while combining the functions of a lounge chair and a side table in one piece of furniture. Hollow inside, the marble base also provides storage for the seat’s bespoke cushions. The overall seating unit resembles a set of balancing weights and lines. The central axis of the seat is highlighted by changes in colour. One unexpected practical feature that we enjoyed is the existence of storage space inside the supporting marble cube. Its hollow interior allows users to place a set of three cushions inside for safe keeping. The ‘Opper’ chair has been released in a limited edition series of 12 + 1 prototype. www.1stdibs.com

Unique position Have you ever had the chance to admire a swan sleeping?

Inspired by the unique position adopted by these imperial creatures while they rest, Iran-based designer Ali Alavi imagined an elegant shape suited for spaces that need to express modern sophistication. Named the Serenad Chair, this bent chair design imitates the curvaceous body of a sleeping swan as it floats on water. Imagine the sumptuous bird with its head between the winds – there is nothing like it. This unique sleeping position was so inspiring for the designer, that he chose to depict it in the shape of a household item. By choosing modern materials, the designer also captured reflections of the water as the bird gently floats on the body surface. With a chrome finish, the sinuously shaped chair mirrors colours and patterns in its proximity, creating an extravagant effect. Perfect for contemporary home, the Serenad Chair proves once again that nature holds the best forms of inspiration. www.behance.net

Elegant, contemporary & inspirational Stylish and modern, the Swarovski Elements Wallpaper created by British designer Karen Beauchamp promises to offer eleven original wallpaper styles adorned with crystallized Swarovski elements Revamping your interior by using one of these eleven different designs of the Swarovski Elements Wallpaper means giving into your desire for luxury. The Rockstar Whiskey Bar lives up to its name through its eye-catching design, elegance and finishes

On the rocks

Buster + Punch created the luxurious whiskey and cocktail bar from in two wooden versions: American Black Walnut and Blackened Ash. Hand-made to conjure the inspiring elegance of carefully finished details, the Rockstar Whiskey Bar also comes in customized sizes so it fits in perfectly in your chosen interior. Its name derives from the attention given to a rockstar because he/she “steals the show” and this is the exact feeling given by the refined wooden bar. Attention to details shaped the final result of this sophisticated furniture piece: “Our stunning whisky or cocktail bar is hand made in the UK from either solid American Black Walnut or Blackened Ash. Bags of style The world of Saint Babila is a world of elegance, luxury and respect for the fines qualities, of material and manufacture that culminate in a dynamic and involving energy

Made of myths & legends Portugal-based design studio UNDA celebrate fascinating mythology by creating the Lotus Desk Trying to express the transition from winter into spring, when everything is revived and enters a new life cycle, the design focuses on details and a smooth, elegant cream-like color or its dark counterpart to shine. This transition from cold to warm is described by the two opposing ends – one displaying an ice-like geometry, while the other blossoms into fine details: “From new life to death, from purity to passion, Lotus have had many meanings in myths and legends. Swelling from tender bud to full bloom, flowers are associated with youth, beauty, pleasure and the season of spring: the season of growth and transition. This Desk intends to capture exactly that: the transition from the hard and cold winter to the blooming and joyful spring which we love so much.”

The new Saint Babila Collection emanates a certainty borne from experience, the Saint Babila creations value fine craftsmanship, exclusive tailoring and true Italian style. The eclectic talent of Samuele Mazza meets with the excellence of a company, whose utmost manufacturing expertise, to give interiors a new appeal, innovation, freshness and timeless luxury.

Alexanders´Collection Spain Luxur y Home POUL HENNINGSEN Simple, functional and to the point. Everything he produced from architecture and furniture to cultural critique and poetry follows one single line of thought. Always liberating, always enlightening, he pretty well invented modern Danish living. The PH Grand Piano was designed in 1931 by Poul Henningsen. It still belongs to the future. It brings style and beauty to any surrounding and interior project.

Be inspired by Danish design icons and German quality. Poul Hennigsen Pianos are the most exclusive pianos on the market and bring style and beauty to any place and interior project.

THE STORY When Poul Hennigsen designed the grand piano in 1931, it was an instant sensation at the “Your Home” Exhibition which was held in Copenhagen. At the exhibition Poul had decorated the area with some of his own quotations; “The grand piano that goes with all sorts of furniture” and “ A piece of furniture can be both beautiful and ugly – “An instrument is always beautiful”. The idea to the grand piano occurred in a pub, while chatting with the famous Danish contemporary jazz pianist Leo Mathiesen. Mathiesen commented on the first draft, and suggested PH to make more space between the legs, so that a bass drum would be able to stand beneath it, when packing together the instruments after a concert. From 1931 to mid-1960s approximately 70

“Today it is very rare to come upon one of the original pianos, and they are seen as a highly exclusive instrument.” grand pianos were sold a before the production was stopped. Today it is very rare to come upon one of the original pianos, and they are seen as a highly exclusive instrument. Today the new internal components are manufactured by Blüthner, which now makes the sound as supreme as the design. The legs are curved and the overall design is made with the idea to highlight the beauty in this type of instrument, namely the strings. It is an icon in the Scandinavian design history, and a trademark for Denmark.

THE CONSTRUCTION The grand piano is made of steal, celluloid and goatskin. It combines elements from Bauhaus and the more traditional organic forms. It was designed to be placed in the ordinary living room, and to be easily placed in all sorts of establishments. But has ever since its launch in 1931, been seen more suitable for the modern and high class home, the exclusive interior design. The PH Grand piano is a modern timeless instrument. It lifts the surroundings and is seen both as a fine instrument as well as a piece of high quality furniture. It exudes luxury and leads ones thoughts to the surroundings of a sky bar, a fashionable hotel a highly deluxe yacht and the penthouse apartment.

PH explained himself the construction this way: “My starting point was that a piano is one of the few instruments played on while inside its case. I mean, you take a violin out of its packaging before playing on it. The traditional packaging of the grand piano has therefore always been that of an item of furniture, in the style of time. I wanted to turn it into an instrument and, in doing so, perhaps improve its sound, which is solely determined by the sounding board.” “The large wooden construction the bears the iron frame and the sounding board I bound as if it was a book of red shagreen. I made the lid of plexiglass, which was all the rage just then. The music rest is a part of the lid and has the entire width of the piano. The legs are of malleable cast iron and chromium-plated. They have been curved to provide space for percussion instruments, even a big drum”. Available at: ALEXANDER’S COLLECTION HOME LUXURY

THE INSTRUMENT Steel and leather bound with a lightness of being. Graceful legs dancing to the beat of a different drummer. A cover made of crystal clear celluloid, allowing a view of the felt hammers as their movement transforms into sound. The PH Grand Piano, a contemporary work of art. The PH Grand Piano is a symbol of modernism and represents Poul Henningsen’s personal ideal of simplicity above all else. With a celluloid cover held in place by an elegantly bow-shaped, chrome-plated brass frame, the piano was given a fresh, edgy, contemporary expression of the 30´s. Specially constructed Blüthner soundboard & components.

hen designer Dahlia Mahmood was asked to design an entrance fit for a grand estate, she used a classic black and white theme creating a serene mood, rich textiles, a stunning chandelier and delicate archways - the result simplistic elegance. Dahlia, president of Dahlia Design a full service design firm design firm which specializes in transforming living space into a unique luxurious home, providing elegance and timeless design. Her philosophy is Simple, Elegant, Glamorous, “every client is different different expectations so as a company pride ourselves of always exceeding client’s expectations”.

With this is mind Perfect Homes Magazine ask: What was the single-largest issue you wanted to address for the family of this beautiful home? Before the redesign of the pre-existing home, the walls were crowded with ornate moulding painted in gold. The client was in love with the exterior of the home but grew uneasy every time she stepped into the interior. Over-the-top ornaments clouded her vision of the space.

Our team, on the other hand, saw the great ceilings and the potential of the architectural elements. There definitely was beauty in this home, it just had to be rediscovered a nd refined. How does the end result match up with your original vision for the space? The client had noted that she wanted to keep the pre-existing double doors because they were hand-carved walnut pieces imported from Brazil. We stood by her request but found that the doors faded in contrast to the completed interior. The colour had diminished with age and had to be restored. With permission, our top-notch craftsman carefully sanded, stained and sealed the walnut, and the carvings turned out to look even richer than before. What was your biggest obstacle in this space? Designing this home, we decided to install large mirrors in the foyer to create the illusion of depth and reflect light from the grand chandelier throughout the open space. Mirrors at this scale, however, become very heavy, so we took extra precautions to secure them with steel brackets and a surrounding frame attached to the wall. A week after installation,

Virginia was hit with its first major earthquake in years. The East Coast was shaken up, but the mirrors remained in place. What surprised this project?

about

No matter the space or the size you are given to work with, there is beauty in any home, it is just a matter of finding it. Without a doubt, this home had the bones; it just needed a tremendous update. I learned to work through messy, outdated designs and bring out the best architectural qualities of a pre-existing structure. What are the hidden gems in your plan? Upon entering the home, the foyer table becomes the center-piece, your eye moving up to the baccarat vase of fresh flowers and to the custom, crystal rock chandelier. The client had a love of pearls and so this became the focal finish — from the Corinthian capitals to the moulding wrapped around the room, every finish in the entrance was given a lustrous touch of glamour. Avoiding

Kitchen Disasters

Within each issue of Perfect Homes we focus our attention on the kitchen after all it is the “heart of the home” but designing a kitchen and ensuring you have ticked all the right boxes can be a daunting task. Here we share the do’s and don’ts of kitchen design.

Do:

Leave some space to breathe.

Don’t:

Go overboard with storage and fill the walls with cabinets. There’s rarely a need to completely fill a room with cabinets. A good layout is a balancing act between storage, function, and aesthetics

Perfect Homes International Magazine

91

Do:

Have a countertop around wall ovens.

Don’t:

Put a wall oven by itself. Where are you going to put the turkey when you take it out of the oven? When using a wall oven ensure there is plenty of counter space next to / or across from it so you can place your heavy cooked dishes onto a counter as soon as you remove it from the ovens. www.stcharlesofnewyork.com

Do:

Invest in strong and good-looking cabinets.

Don’t:

Skimp on poor-quality. Think about it - you’re opening and closing those doors and drawers all the time. Get something strong and good-looking. Hardwoods, a good finish, and strong hinges are essential.

93

Do:

Bring cabinets up to the ceiling.

Don’t:

Have cabinets that fall short of the ceiling. Why? Because they collect dust and unnecessary accessories, plus the space created between the cabinet and ceiling is completely wasted. By taking the cabinet all the way up to the ceiling you create more storage space ideal for those products that you don’t use on a day-to-day basis.

Do:

Have one element that’s fun or creative.

Don’t: Be boring.

The best kitchens have a soul or a spirit that’s warm, inviting, and personal. Every project is a chance to do something new and creative. It’s not just about the cabinets and countertops - the whole room has to bend effortlessly together a bit like a marriage. www.beautifulkitchensblog.co.uk

Do:

Make a small kitchen work for you.

Don’t:

Think bigger is always better. A welldesigned kitchen with high-quality materials and thoughtful details can make even the smallest space suit you perfectly.

Do:

Use cabinetry to conceal some appliances.

Don’t:

Go overboard with stainless-steel appliances. Stainless steel can be a wonderful accent. However, as with all good design, there should be a rhythm with the placement. Splashes of stainless all over the place make any kitchen look and feel choppy and small. Be especially careful with those stainlesssteel coffins — giant stainless refrigerators as they can quickly overpower a kitchen design if it’s not balanced correctly.

Do:

Know when to stop.

Don’t:

Overdo it. Knowing when to stop is the real challenge, there is nothing worse than a kitchen overloaded with stainless steel or mosaic tiles. The key rule to remember is that appliances and decorations should accentuate the kitchen space.

Wood Effect Porcelain Tiles C

hoosing the flooring for your home is one of the most significant decisions to make in terms of the long-term, overall look and feel of the space. It’s a big financial decision, and theoretically it’s not going to be changed for at least a number of years – or ideally, for many years to come. But choosing between real hardwood flooring and porcelain tiles means being stuck between two very different choices: authentic and long lasting but difficult to maintain and expensive, or durable, easy to clean, but without a touch or warmth. Well the simplest solution always seem to be the best and Porcelanosa Par-ker Original Ceramic Parket tiles offers the best of both worlds - a porcelain tile printed with wood patterns offers picture-perfect natural wood colour and variety with durability it’s easy to clean and less expensive than one might think and by merging the beauty and warmth of wood with porcelain tiles highly rated performance, hardness and longevity is a definite winning combination. The Par-ker tile doesn’t scratch, fade or warp and with a zero absorption rate it doesn’t stain or need refinishing, furthermore Porcelanosa manufactures versions with anti-slip surfaces ideal for use in wet zones such as bathrooms and kitchen which is why this tile is the newest trend to emerge this year.

PROUNA JEWELRY

Cobalt Collection Designed by Catharina Kippel Catharina Kippel has continued to explore the theme of her classic Bono collection, adding a deep tone of cobalt blue to her designs. During the 19th century and early 20th century, china from Ostindiska kompaniet, Kunglig Dansk, Gustavsberg and Rörstrand gained global reputation for its quality and design. Catharina Kippel’s Cobalt collection is made in the same tradition, with the cobalt blue designs hand-painted in three layers on slightly transparent bone china. Like all true highquality products it will only become more beautiful with time when used. We think of it as a tomorrow’s collector’s item.

Fine Bone China bejeweled with Swarovski Elements, placed by hand. Prouna Jewelry is a collection of expertly handcrafted fine bone china embedded with Crystallized™ Swarovski Elements. The Jewelry Collection is the only collection in the industry that uses the technology of hand-embedding Swarovski Crystals into fine bone china, whereas it remains dishwasher-durable. Rimmed in 24k gold or platinum, Prouna Jewelry is the perfect accessory for dressing up any table.

eople flock to the Costa del Sol and other sought after locations like Miami and the Cote d’Azur, France, for primarily two reasons: the climate and the lifestyle. These venues are famous for their outdoorfriendly lifestyle and people obviously want to enjoy it as much as they can whether it’s at a beachside chiringuito or a backyard barbecue. While a person can spend as much on a villa in one of these venues as they can in their home country, the emphasis is very much on enjoying the surrounding natural outdoor splendour. Within this setting, thatch-covered structures add a certain tropical elegance and luxury that highlights the outdoor lifestyle in places

flexible way too. The Cape Reed Group of Companies works internationally on large commercial projects as well as residential projects for private homeowners. The former is a real test for their capabilities, while the latter offers important interaction with the end-user, so both are equally important. Another form of flexibility is the ability to liaise not only with constructors or developers, but also with landscapers or indeed to take on the building process itself. The Cape Reed design and engineering office provides the technical expertise while specialist assembly teams erect the wood and thatch structures. Cape Reed got their company name from the primary roof cover material they use: Cape reed (Thamnocortus Insignis). This special plant grows exclusively on a small strip of land on South Africa’s Southern Cape region. It is a slow grower, and takes about seven years before it is ready for harvesting, but thanks to a continuous staggered process of cleaning the land from alien vegetation, cutting and replanting, the company is able to ensure a good annual supply without depleting either the reed vegetation itself or the ecosystem it grows in. Cape reed is a remarkably durable natural fibre and ideal thatching material. Likewise, the Cape Reed Group of Companies uses timber from FSC-approved sources and plants more than 165,000 new trees every year. Cape Reed structures have a life expectancy of 20-50 years. Both waterproof and UVproof, these beautiful roofs also provide natural insulation with as much as a 10 degree centigrade difference in temperature compared to a traditional roof.

like Marbella. One company is clearly helping to bring nature back to man, so that they may enjoy all that the Costa del Sol and the other venues have to offer during their stay. For more than 20 years the Cape Reed Group of Companies has been designing, supplying and building exclusive, highquality Safari-themed structures with natural, sustainable materials. Subsequently Cape Reed structures have rapidly become a popular option particularly along the Spanish Costas, where it adds a perfect finishing touch to chiringuito beach bars, poolside cabana bars, covered terraces, spa areas and even villas.

Established in 1992 in Cape Town, South Africa, the Cape Reed Group of Companies has grown to include regional and representative offices in the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Their timber and thatch structures can be seen in private residences from St. Tropez to New Delhi, and at luxury hotels from Marbella to Dubai. Cape Reed is without doubt a specialised product, though one with many applications, from a humble carport or covered gazebo to tropical style restaurants or shops. Not only is the product a highly flexible medium but so is the business structured in a very

While Thamnocortus Insignis has natural flameretardant properties, the company augments the fire retardant capabilities of its structures by incorporating a fire blanket within the thatch. The Cape Reed Group furthermore joined forces with leading European technology developers to reduce the fire threat even further. They commissioned Dutch firm Magma to create Cape Reed FireShield®, a fire repellent product aimed at natural materials and designed specifically for the reed and wood used in the construction process. The diligence Cape Reed has employed in ensuring the safety of its structures has earned it the European Union’s approval for its fire retardant thatching method; the only company of its kind to achieve such an endorsement.

Thatch covered structures provide a tropical elegance and luxury that highlights the outdoor lifestyle.

The Cape Reed Group of Companies has won numerous awards including the Arch of Europe in the Gold Category for quality and technology, and Gold Awards at the Dubai Swimming Pool and Traders Association.

Cape Reed works with constructors as well as developers, but also with landscapers to create award winning venues. 148

The use of quality materials combined with stellar craftsmanship allows Cape Reed to create stunning gazebos, pergolas, chiringuitos, and majlis to complement any garden, patio or poolside area, as well as primary roof structures and interiors for your home. Cape Reed also provides the finishing details from light fittings to furniture handcrafted in South Africa to turn your living space into something special.

Cape Reed provides rustic chic designs to villas and urbanizations around the world.

Cape Reed’s rustic chic designs have been featured in private villas and urbanizations around the world. Their presence in major commercial projects has situated them as a world leader in timber and thatch construction. The Cape Reed Group of Company’s biggest project to date is the Sofitel Hotel and Resort on the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai’s newest and largest luxury five-star hotel. During this threeyear, $4 million (2.9 million euros) project, Cape Reed built 7,000 square meters of thatched roofing for the hotel, 5,000 square meters of thatch tile ceilings, 100 meters of timber hand rails, and 800 square meters of timber decking. They also provided 40 thatch beach cabanas, five lifeguard huts, and 200 square meters of timber pergolas. Also in Dubai, The Royal Island Beach Club, a Caribbean-style beach club aimed at highflyers, was the first commercial development to open on Dubai’s famous offshore island project The World. The Royal Island Beach Club is located on the island of Lebanon on The World development, four kilometres out to sea, and takes approximately 30 minutes by water taxi. Sofitel Hotel & Resort, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE

Cape Reed’s work included the construction of the main restaurant building which comfortably seats up to 200 guests, as well as eight chalets, 10 beach umbrellas, and two cabanas for welcoming guests. Special pressure-treated timber columns from South Africa were used to build all the structures, while the group’s unique cape reed thatching was used for all the roofs. The entire process from design to completion took more than a year due to the lengthy approval process by the developers because of the uniqueness of the project. Due to the location of the island, quite a number of logistical challenges were faced in getting the material and craftsmen to and from the island on a daily basis. Lebanon Island and The Royal Island Beach Club has since become synonymous with Cape Reed as everyone who visits the island really appreciates the beautiful safari and island style structures.

Chalets and beach umbrellas at Royal Island Beach Club, The World,Dubai, UAE

Recently, Cape Reed also finished work on the newly opened Al Sahel resort on Sir Bani Yas Island in the Persian Gulf. This private retreat owned by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was turned into a nature preserve and is now home to 30 animal species, including the Arabian oryx which was recently reintroduced into the wild after becoming extinct. For this project, Cape Reed turned the Al Sahel into a scene straight out of the African bush with thatch villas complete with luxurious wood interiors surround by scrubby savannahs, shimmering swimming pools.

Al Sahel resort, Sr Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Cape Reed’s European flagship project to date is the new Sea Grill Restaurant at the Hotel Puente Romano in Marbella. The Sea Grill features traditional timber with a white wash coating to give it a sleek, modern design. It is capped by more than 400 square meters of thatched roofing that gives it a beautiful appearance but also makes it the ideal place to enjoy a delicious lunch on a hot summer’s day while taking in a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. Take a drive from Marbella up into the hills toward Monda and you’ll find the Shanti Som Spa and Wellbeing Retreat. Cape Reed was instrumental in turning an old hotel into a modern, luxurious spa where you can relax, unwind and practice yoga. For this project, Cape Reed created a number of spectacular thatched roofs while preserving as much as possible of the original structure. Not only does a Cape Reed structure look great in gardens and by the pool, but they are also environmentally friendly. In addition to their sustainable farming practices, Cape Reed’s thatch and timber chiringuitos are carbon negative, reducing the overall carbon footprint.

Thamnocortus insignis is a non-perennial plant that, unless it is harvested and preserved, will die and release its carbon dioxide into the air. By using it as thatch, the carbon dioxide remains locked inside the reed for as many as 50 years. The Cape Reed Group of Companies goes beyond benefitting the environment. It also believes in benefitting society. Cape Reed has set up a training academy for specialised craftsmen in South Africa, and is also involved in various outreach projects. The Cape Reed Group of Companies has regional offices located in Cape Town, South Africa; Marbella, Spain; Dubai, U.A.E.; and Miami, U.S.A. They also have satellite offices in Valletta, Malta; Amman, Jordan; Doha, Qatar; and Aix-en-Provence, France. Main entrance to Shanti-Som Spa & Well-being Retreat, Marbella, Spain

flowers CUT

F

lowers can make any home look gorgeous but there is nothing sadder than spending your hard earned cash on a bouquet of flowers only to have them look like a wilty mess after a few days.

Why do some flowers seem to last so much longer than others and is there a secret potion that you can put in the vase to make them stay fresh? Do you know if you are getting the best deals from your florists when you get flowers. One of the biggest problems with people buying flowers that don’t seem to last has got

154

absolutely nothing to do with the flowers but is a problem with the vase that they are put into. You need to always wash out the containers with a bit of bleach, this is to stop the growth of bacteria. Bacteria can live on for months in a dry vase so it is crucial that you clean your vases with soap and hot water and a few drops of bleach. Don’t put any flower arrangement near a source of heat as it will dry out the flowers. They really should not be in the heat of the sun all day either, it will considerably shorten their life span. The longest lived flowers in your home are

Perfect Homes International Magazine

the ones that are the freshest from the flower shop. You can tell yourself if the flowers are reasonably fresh by how perky they are. If there are any wilted flowers or any brown leaves then it is past its prime. The leaves on the flowers should be as crisp as a fresh lettuce. Look in the middle of the flower and see if it looks bright or faded. With some flowers you can very gently pinch them to see how firm they are, if they are very soft that means they are coming to the end of their lives. This is especially true with roses.

Here we view a few of long lasting flowers....

HOLLAND FLOWERS

Carnations Carnations are another under-valued flower. These also can last up to 20 days in a vase. Like Mums they come in many different colors but generally only two different shaped, smooth edged or frilly edged. Their best quality is the array of colors you can buy them in. White, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple... it is almost limitless.

156

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Chrysanthemums Chrysanthemum without a doubt are the longest lasting flower. Often called their shortened name Mums, many people just don’t understand how many different varieties there are to this flower and only think of the daisy type or decorative type which many people use in their fall gardens.

Alstromemerias Alstroemeria are a lovely delicate looking flower that can easily live up to 14 days in water. They look very delicate so they make very pretty arrangements. Their colors range from white, pink, purples and yellows and they all have a stripping effect that can be very subtle or very distinct depending on the color.

Red Roses It depends on the type of rose but they can last 7 to 10 days. Commercial roses can be tricky. Generally found that the larger the head of the rose the faster they die but not always.

Trees our Future Visually calming trees play an important role in our lives and well-being but you will be amazed at just what they provide for us!

Perfect Homes International Magazine

Trees Produce Oxygen Let’s face it, we could not exist as we do if there were no trees. A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. What many people don’t realize is the forest also acts as a giant filter that cleans the air we breath, something we all need to be conscience of.

Trees Clean the Soil The term phytoremediation is a fancy word for the absorption of dangerous chemicals and other pollutants that have entered the soil. Trees can either store harmful pollutants or actually change the pollutant into less harmful forms. Trees filter sewage and farm chemicals, reduce the effects of animal wastes, clean roadside spills and clean water runoff into streams.

Trees Control Noise Pollution Trees muffle urban noise almost as effectively as

stone walls. Trees, planted at strategic points in a neighborhood or around your house, can abate major noises from freeways and airports.

Trees Slow Storm Water Runoff Flash flooding can be dramatically reduced by a forest or by planting trees. One Colorado blue spruce, either planted or growing wild, can intercept more than 1000 gallons of water annually when fully grown. Underground waterholding aquifers are recharged with this slowing down of water runoff.

Trees Are Carbon Sinks To produce its food, a tree absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide in the wood, roots and leaves. Carbon dioxide is a global warming suspect. A forest is a carbon storage area or a “sink” that can lock up as much carbon as it produces. This locking-up process “stores” carbon as wood and not as an available “greenhouse” gas.

Trees Clean the Air Trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Trees remove this air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates.

Trees Shade and Cool Shade resulting in cooling is what a tree is best known for. Shade from trees reduces the need for air conditioning in summer. In winter, trees break the force of winter winds, lowering heating costs. Studies have shown that parts of cities without cooling shade from trees can literally be “heat islands” with temperatures as much as 12 degrees Fahrenheit higher than surrounding areas.

Trees Act as Windbreakers During windy and cold seasons, trees located on the windward side act as windbreaks.

A windbreak can lower home heating bills up to 30% and have a significant effect on reducing snow drifts. A reduction in wind can also reduce the drying effect on soil and vegetation behind the windbreak and help keep precious topsoil in place.

Trees Fight Soil Erosion Erosion control has always started with tree and grass planting projects. Tree roots bind the soil and their leaves break the force of wind and rain on soil. Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater and reduce water runoff and sediment deposit after storms.

Trees Increase Property Values Real estate values increase when trees beautify a property or neighborhood. Trees can increase the property value of your home by 15% or more.

The Magnificence of Mongolia

The second largest landlocked country in the world, Mongolia is wedged between the two superpowers of Russia and China and due to its rugged terrain and punishingly cold winters it is the least densely populated independent country on the globe. With a colourful history dating back from its most famous adventurer and warrior, Genghis Khaan, Mongolia has moved a long way from the images of nomadic animal skin clad tribes traversing the lands on horseback.

Mongolia is no longer controlled by a communist regime and is quickly turning into a healthy democracy which is experiencing an economic boom and a rapidly developing tourism industry based around the thriving capital of Ulaan Baatar, the upmarket city known as “Billionaire Valley, it is not tourism however that has turned around the economy of Mongolia but the abundance of natural resources, minerals and ores including coal, molybdenum, tin tungsten, gold and copper (Mongolia has the largest copper mine in the world). As a result of this wealth of treasures, the world’s largest mining companies have set up headquarters in the capital and a huge construction industry has sprung up. Mongolia is quickly becoming the future source of resources for the growing Chinese economy. This has brought in many mining companies, almost all of which are increasing their numbers of foreign personnel. At the moment there are not enough apartments to house them in and therefore the rental yields in Mongolia are about 15-18% per annum. This is considerably higher than any other Asian country, making Mongolia one of the best real estate opportunities in the world. With 50% of the local population still living in yurts, the demand for modern accommodation is increasing day by day as the population grows wealthier which in turn is resulting is some very interesting property prices and development which have both almost doubled in the last five years. 176

O

NE HYDE PARK: The Residences at Mandarin Oriental is without a doubt London’s most exclusive residential development. Completed in 2011, it is made up of 86 residential apartments and a number of exclusive shops including Rolex and McLaren Automotive.

The reception area is in many ways the most important area of One Hyde Park. Elegantly grand, the double-storey area allows natural light to cascade in from all sides. It is the first area for anyone entering the building and therefore needs to immediately impress, setting the tone for the rest of the development, as well as promoting the atmosphere of calm, order and comfort prevalent in the most luxurious of reception areas. Candy & Candy’s plan for the space responded perfectly with the residents’ desires, using luxury fabrics, exceptional contemporary artwork, genuine vintage pieces and luxurious materials, along with their innate design talent. To honour Knightsbridge itself, the concierge desk is faced by two suits of nickel-plated copper armour, while the centre of the room is lit from above by a handshaped and intricately wrought chandelier with details reminiscent of the leaves in Hyde Park on the doorstep. Below sits a choice of seating areas complimented with a piano, creating an Area in which residents and guests can linger, socialise and relax. All is implemented in typically luxurious fashion, with bespoke furniture and silk rugs. The calm, tranquil area that houses the Lavish One Hyde Park residents’ spa has been designed to create an atmosphere becoming of the most relaxing space in the development. The design concept focuses on a transition from light to dark, with residents entering into a light space emphasized by polished marble floors and

Offering the most scenic views in the city over Hyde Park with Harrods twinkling in the distance, this unique collaboration between the worlds’ leading architects, designers, hoteliers and artisans offers huge luxury apartments for only the most affluent clientele. Every single aspect of the scheme is of the very highest, near unreachable standards of quality. With a location in the most prestigious area of the Capital, iconic architecture by the award-winning Richard Rogers, services by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, art commissions by James Turrell and construction by Laing O’Rourke, One Hyde Park is an entirely allstar development. Fitting neatly among these 190 Perfect Homes International Magazine

names and claiming their place among the world’s best is the company chosen to carry out the vital interior design: Candy & Candy. Pioneers of bespoke design, Candy & Candy were appointed designers for the scheme. Their vision was to create interiors exquisite enough to do justice to the most exclusive address in the world. This included the creation of a series of bespoke show apartments, all communal areas including the cavernous reception area and library, the luxurious spa and recreation facilities and an interior base-build for each private apartment. In short, it was their job to design and implement the entire interior of the project.

sycamore timber furniture. Central to this first space is a waterfall, designs to firstly create a Zen-like atmosphere and secondly with the more subtly thoughtful aspect of drowning out the sound of the outside world, allowing the residents to forget about the busy streets on their doorstep. The transition in Palettes occurs on the walk to the treatment rooms where darker, cavelike colours creep in on the way to the two treatment rooms, which themselves are complete with adjoining relaxation rooms with mood enhancing therapy lights and gold-leaf ceilings, creating a extravagantly relaxing environment. Next door to the spa is the swimming pool. 21m long, it is flanked by a whirlpool bath and surrounded by leathered effect stone panelling and low underwater lighting, giving the illusion of height and movement. There are also a state-of-the-art gym, two private studios and high-tech squash court, all finished to the highest possible standard. Both changing rooms are finished in a range of exotic stones sourced from around the world, finished with a pine-panelled sauna and beautifully mosaicked steam room. Each and every base-build apartment is available in either a light or dark palette, comprising of either limestone, marble and European oak or Oriental beige stone, polished grey marble and dark brown oak. Regardless of which is chosen, all designs come with bespoke Bulthaup kitchens with a wide range of Gaggeanu appliances and bathrooms with rain showers, sunken marble twin basins and under-stone floor heating. Bedrooms enjoy a fully controllable heating and cooling system and programmable lighting, while windows are triple-glazed and automatically calibrate the amount of light brought

into the apartment. The design is tested in full with a ÂŁ1.5 million show build in a warehouse prior to construction to ensure that the quality and detail of the room is simply unsurpassed. As well as the base-build apartments, Candy & Candy fully designed, furnished and finished two show apartments, as an example of the potential innate in such a development. An exceptional 5-bedroom apartment complete with two kitchens and a private cinema room covers 9,000 square feet across one pavilion, taking in commanding views of both Hyde Park and Knightsbridge. Both the master bedroom and four individually designed guest bedrooms have luxury en suites, while the formal reception area offers a stunning entertaining space. The three bedroom duplex apartment is designed for family life and city living, with rich, warm dĂŠcor and artistic touches throughout. The greatest and most spectacular feature of the apartment is the private terrace which runs along the entire ground floor providing an extraordinary backdrop to the whole space. A walled garden provides the terrace with a sense of seclusion and privacy, despite being so close to the outside world.

Bathtub Hammock Struck by the synergy between the shapes of two compelling symbols of relaxation, a hammock and a bath tub, Splinter Works were inspired to develop a piece that would provide the ultimate vehicle for total escapism. The peaceful experience of kicking-back in a hammock has been further enhanced by combining it with the immersive comfort of soaking in a hot bath. By literally elevating the experience of bathing into a suspended sculpture the bathroom has been reinvented as a contemplative sanctuary for artful relaxation. Designed for use in a wet room, the Bathtub Hammock is suspended from the walls and does not touch the floor. It is fixed with stainless steel brackets that can be covered over, or left revealed. The bath is filled using a floor standing tap and the waste water released through the base into a floor drain. A downpipe drain can also be installed if a wet room setting is not possible. The Bathtub Hammock is made from carbon fibre which is utilised for its inherent strength and ability to be formed into complex curves, furthermore the weave of the fabric references the cloth of a typical hammock. Beneath the layers of carbon fibre lies a foam core, which insulates the tub, meaning the bath stays hot for considerably longer than normal. At 2.7m long, the Bathtub Hammock is longer than a regular bathtub, leaving plenty of room to share the experience. Custom sizes are available but it is also designed so that it can be trimmed up to 20 cm to allow for flexible installation. Pictured here in black, it also available in red, blue, yellow, pink, bronze and pure silver. With its clean lines and curvaceous shape, the Bathtub Hammock takes stylish relaxation to a new level! The bath is cast in solid marine grade aluminium, so will last a lifetime and has a bonded acrylic liner for excellent heat retention benefits. The surface has been polished for a high shine look. Copper Bateau Bath The Copper Bateau Bath is reminiscent of a time past when one bathed in front of the fire. The bath had to be light, so that it could be easily carried from room to room. Although lightweight, the bath is sturdy and made entirely from high gauge copper. It is hand beaten, polished and then sealed, giving each bath a unique hand finished look. These copper baths are coated with a baked-on, hard wearing compound which maintains the applied finish and means that the bath only needs to be cleaned with nonabrasive, every day bathroom cleaner and wiped with a soft cloth. Developed for the Aviation Industry, the coating is durable and flexible, allowing it to stand up to the rigours of regular use. For more information visit: www.catchpoleandrye.com

CHARLES RENNIE

MACKINTOSH .. .. ARCHITECT artist icon

MACKINTOSH

MODERNITY C

harles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow born architect, designer and artist, is celebrated around the world as one of the most creative figures of the early 20th century. A pioneer of Art Nouveau, he is an even more enigmatic figure today than when he was alive. While the astonishing modernity of his work has long ensured him a place of prominence among the pioneers of the Modern Movement, in recent years his promotion of symbolic decoration has been hailed as prophetically post-modern. Combining a progressive modernity with the spirit of romanticism, the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh created many of the best loved and most influential buildings, furniture and decorative schemes of the early 20th century. Few designers can claim to have created a unique and individual style that is so instantly recognisable. Famous today as a designer of chairs, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an architect who designed schools, offices, churches, tearooms and homes, an interior designer and decorator, an exhibition designer, a designer of furniture, metalwork, textiles and stained glass and, in his later years, a water-colourist. Mackintosh believed architecture was the supreme discipline, as it uniquely brought all the arts together. To understand his work, it must be seen as a complete unit rather than as individual components. His aim was to connect individuals with his work both functionally and spiritually. He believed this could be achieved through a series of carefully balancing opposites: modernity with tradition, the masculine with the feminine, light with dark and the sensual with the chaste. His work has a distinctive character, as a figure head of his time, caught in the difficult transition between the Victorian era and the Modern age. His distinctive style mixed together elements of the Scottish vernacular and the English Arts and Crafts tradition with the organic forms of Art Nouveau and a drive to be modern. As his work matured Mackintosh employed bolder geometric forms in place of organic-inspired symbolic decoration. 204

..

Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work can be divided into three main areas: public buildings, private homes and tea rooms. The Glasgow tea rooms he designed in the early 1900s are perhaps his most unique contribution in which art, architecture and design came together in a complete environment. These light, elegant and sophisticated interiors were an enormous contrast to the gritty, smoky urban city of Glasgow where he was born, trained and lived for most of his adult life. Glasgow is where the majority of his work was executed and Mackintosh’s career paralleled the city’s economic boom. By the end of the 19th century Glasgow was a wealthy, burgeoning European city with an immense network of trade and manufacture that supplied the world with coal and ships. It was also a rich source of commissions for a gifted young architect and designer.

One of eleven children, Mackintosh was born in 1868 to Margaret and William Mackintosh, a clerk in the police force. He grew up in Glasgow and from the age of nine attended the Allan Glen’s Institution, a private school for the children of tradesmen and artisans, which specialised in vocational training. At fifteen Mackintosh began evening classes at Glasgow School of Art and a year later, in 1884, he began a five-year pupillage with the Glasgow architects John Hutchins. In 1889 he joined the more eminent firm of Honeyman & Keppie, where he received a traditional Beaux Arts training typical of the period. The 1890s was a decade of learning and development for Mackintosh, as he continued his architectural training, travelled to Italy, attended and gave lectures, and formed new friendships. These experiences widened his interest in architecture to include the fine and decorative arts, and caused Mackintosh to align himself firmly with the progressive school. Among his friends were Francis Newbery, the inspirational director of Glasgow School of Art and his wife Jessie, Herbert McNair, a fellow draughtsman at Honeyman & Keppie and the sisters Margaret and Frances Macdonald, who attended Glasgow School of Art. Mackintosh, McNair and the Macdonald sisters came to be known as The Four. Together they designed and exhibited work including posters and furniture. Through them, Mackintosh was introduced to the broader field of art and in particular to the feminine, symbolic graphic style of the Macdonald sisters. The group became known by the press as “the Spook School? a reference to their elongated, sinuous and feminine graphic forms based on fabled and mythic themes. Mackintosh went married Margaret Macdonald in 1900 and she was to remain his principal collaborator throughout his life. Perfect Homes International Magazine

..

In 1896 Francis Newbery invited twelve local architects to enter a competition to design a new building for Glasgow School of Art. One of these firms was Honeyman & Keppie, which was almost certainly selected because of Mackintosh’s friendship with Newbery. Honeyman & Keppie won the competition with Mackintosh as designer. This, his first and most important commission, was to seal his future reputation. The brief for the building of Glasgow School of Art on a steeply sloping site with an extremely tight budget was simple, utilitarian even. Due to the financial restrictions the design was completed in two phases. The north end opened in 1899, but the construction of the west end did not start until 1907 and was only completed in 1909. This time lapse coincided with the most productive period of Mackintosh’s career and accounted for the changes in style between the first and second phases. The later west end is not only much more radical and progressive than the north end, but Mackintosh also added an attic storey to create more studio space. The School forms a simple E-shaped building with an austere and asymmetrical north façade with massive studio windows. A single central entrance leads to a staircase with two floors of studios to the right and left. The bright and airy Director’s Office with fitted cupboards and a fireplace is directly above the entrance. At the centre of the school, at the top of the stairwell top-lit with a glazed roof and timber trusses like a medieval barn, is an exhibition space called the Museum. There was little additional decoration to the building because of the limited budget. Unusually for the period there was only a small stone carving over the entrance and any decoration that Mackintosh managed to incorporate was functional as well as beautiful. The massive fenestration of the north façade is visually broken up by decorative wrought-iron brackets that brace the huge windows and can be used as window cleaning supports. The lively wrought-iron railings also give decoration to an otherwise reduced building with finials of stylised birds, bees and beetles that resemble Japanese Mon or family crests. In the second phase of construction, the west elevation was radically altered with the addition of the library’s dramatic three-storey windows. The interior of the library is no less surprising, with the central fall of light from the windows contrasting with the dark 206

stained wooden gallery supported by split beams. Mackintosh designed the fittings and furnishings in dark stained wood decorated with splashes of red, green and white – a magical mix of academic sobriety and modern geometric intensity. This library was probably one of Mackintosh’s most exciting interiors in a building that both kick started his architectural career and later revealed his mature style.

..

Mackintosh’s other domestic schemes ranged from single rooms, such as the music room he designed in Vienna for Fritz Wärndorfer in 1902, to the interiors of existing buildings, like his 1904 scheme for the 18th century Hous’hill owned by Kate Cranston and her husband John Cochrane. Yet his most important house was Hill House on a hillside site on the outskirts of Helensburgh overlooking the Clyde estuary. Mackintosh secured the commission after showing his client – the publisher Walter Blackie – Windyhill, the house that he built for his friend William Davidson in Kilmacalm in 1901.

The following year Mackintosh started work on Hill House by submitting the internal layout to Blackie for approval, before designing the elevations which reflected the function of the interior. A narrow building running from east to west with all the major rooms looking south over the estuary, Hill House was foremost a practical family home with the library off the main hall designed for receiving clients and the nursery situated at the furthest end in the north extension where the kitchen, services and children’s rooms were housed. Mackintosh used local sandstone and plain roughcast rendered or harled walls. Features such as the massive chimney and staircase tower – which came from the Scottish baronial tradition – were combined with a modern visual vocabulary, such as the flat roof of the sun lounge. Mackintosh was allowed a free rein with the decoration of the hall, sitting room and bedroom, where he designed everything from built-in wardrobes to fire tongs and pokers. His desire to create a total environment was in keeping with the artistic taste of the time. The Hill House is perhaps Mackintosh’s most polished interior since he experimented with – and fine-tuned his aesthetic not only with the Windyhill commission, but also with his own homes at 120 Mains Street and then at 78 Southpark Avenue, Glasgow. At Mains Street in 1900, in collaboration with his wife Margaret, Mackintosh installed his first all-white sitting room and experimented with the contrast of light and dark rooms and ‘male’ and ‘female’ environments.

CHARLES RENNIE

MACKINTOSH ARCHITECT .. artist .. icon

..

Mackintosh was extremely fortunate to work throughout his career with clients such as Walter Blackie, who allowed him to have complete control over a project. However his most supportive client – and most generous and constant patron was Miss Catherine Cranston, who owned and ran a chain of Glasgow tea rooms. At the time Glasgow tea rooms were unique as places where people of different classes could meet friends, relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of spaces within the same building. At a time when the temperance movement was increasingly popular, tea rooms like Miss Cranston played an important role in Glasgow life.

..

In 1900 he designed the ladies’ luncheon room and related rooms for Miss Cranston’s Ingram Street tea rooms and in 1903 the Willow tea rooms. The Willow tea rooms occupied a narrow site on Sauchiehall Street – old Scots for ‘alley of willows’, hence the use of willow for many of the decorative motifs used. Nothing escaped Mackintosh’s attention. He and Margaret designed everything from furniture and menus, to the waitresses’ uniforms. Within the four storey building, Mackintosh created a ladies’ tea room on the ground floor, with a general lunch room at the back and a tea gallery above it. On the first floor was a more exclusive ladies’ room with a men’s billiard and smoking room on the floor above. The most extravagant of the rooms was the Room de Luxe on the first floor. Overlooking the street, it had white walls with a frieze of coloured glass, mirrored glass and decorative leading, a gesso panel by Margaret Macdonald, splendid double doors with further leaded glass decoration and silver painted highbacked chairs and sofas upholstered in rich purple.

Mackintosh was first employed by Miss Cranston in 1896 to provide a stencil decoration for the walls of her tea rooms at 91-93 Buchanan Street. Mackintosh was asked to create a wall decoration for the ladies’ tea room, the luncheon room and the smokers’ gallery. His frieze depicted elongated female figures in pairs facing each other surrounded by roses. This commission led to others for Miss Cranston from 1898 to 1899 when Mackintosh had sole responsibility for the Argyle Street tea room. For this, his first major commission for furniture, he designed his first high-backed chair. 208

In 1914 Mackintosh left Honeyman & Keppie – and Glasgow, this is the period of his life that, over time, has been elaborated to create the image of a tragic romantic hero who was rejected by his home town, and that so fits with the famous portrait of Mackintosh with a moustache and a bow tied at his neck. It has been written that he left Honeyman & Keppie because he had been drinking heavily, which was supposedly due to his difficult temperament and his inability to attract new clients. It is possible that he intended to

move to Vienna, where he was highly respected having forged friendships with Austrian architects such as Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, only for his plans to be thwarted by the outbreak of World War 1. Mackintosh moved to Walberswick in Suffolk in 1914, where he produced a series of botanical watercolours. While there he was arrested as a spy, possibly because he received post from central Europe, and he then moved to London. Mackintosh tried to gain work to establish himself in England with the status he had enjoyed in Glasgow, but at a time when classical architecture was increasingly popular his style seemed outmoded. There is also little doubt that he was demanding to work with and needed exceptional clients who were able to give him the free range he required. However, Mackintosh did produce fabric designs for Messrs, Sefton of London and in 1916 he received a commission to refurbish and decorate a house at Derngate in Northampton for W.J. Bassett-Lowke, which he executed in a very modern style, similar to that of the Library at Glasgow School of Art. An endlessly fascinating man who created work with a very distinctive voice, Mackintosh emerged from the Arts and Crafts period as an urban architect who became progressively less interested in its rural aesthetic and increasingly inspired by the progressive art movements of Germany and Austria. Despite the disappointments of his later years, his early and mid-career work in Glasgow – much of which is still in use today – has sealed his reputation as one of the most important architects and designers of the turn of the 20th century.

PRESENTING OUR LATEST RESIDENTIAL PROJECT This abandoned 5 bedroom villa repossession in El Rosario, was totally stripped of all fixtures and fittings, not to mention the unbearable damp in the basement caused by an unattended water leak over a long period of time. Our task was to make this into a family home for its new English owners, who wanted to slow down their busy business lifestyle, for a more Andalucían approach to life, and of course there’s nowhere better to do it than in a house designed by us! At Blackshaw Interior Design for the first stage of any project we advise on layout and any initial changes we can make to a house both internally and externally, for both investment purposes and also for living requirements so we can ensure the property layout and design suits the needs of the family (the clients). For this property a simple modernisation and bringing things into good working order, making good and up to date was what was needed. We were immediately struck by the mustard coloured exterior which that dates

these style of houses, and advised on a fresh white approach giving the property a more contemporary and cared for look. The small insignificant kidney shaped swimming pool was changed to an eleven by five meters pool with white tiles, with sweeping stairs visible from the approach in the main lounge. Along with the white exterior we matched grey detailing, and light painted wood, to transform the sad dark wood details. Contemporary up and down lighters complete the look and set the house off amazingly during the evening, giving the villa the stature it deserves. Interior double doors which previously led into the lounge were moved onto another wall, changing the way we could use the distribution of furniture in the lounge, and of course our current trademark kitchen and open living space, lends itself to being a more social and family orientated area. A light and bright colour palette was used throughout with the odd splash of colour. By using this classic contemporary colour scheme

the interiors look fresh plus it provides longevity to the communal areas. The children’s bedrooms were tailored towards their favourite things, having spent time choosing with the clients their likes and dislikes it is always extremely satisfying seeing the realisation of how much they will enjoy these rooms, should it be sparkles or pirates! For the master bedroom we set the scene for either a cosy early night, or a luxury lie in. With rich velvets, silks and crystal hanging lights, a touch of Marbella. Well… we have to occasionally. Thank you for following our work, and I hope you enjoy what we do as much as we do putting it all together. If there is anything you have seen here you would like more information about, or to enquire about a renovation, please contact the team at Blackshaw Interior design.

How to an Apartment

S

mall space does not have to mean cramped. Just because your home is pint-sized doesn’t mean you have to live with pint-sized home decor. Try these tricks of the trade on for size, and you’ll find your small apartment has never looked bigger.

Open and organised

Keep your space clutter free

Define your rooms

An open plan apartment doesn’t offer much in the way of privacy but with screens and storage units you can create and separate areas

Keep things simple

A small room looks even smaller when it’s filled with contrasting colours, patterns and layers. Stick to a single flowing scheme to make the apartment appear much larger that it is.

Invest in versatile furniture

In today’s world, space is a hot commodity. So it’s no surprise that modern furniture has evolved to have multiple functions. Whether it’s a dining table on castors for easy mobility or a lounge that doubles as a storage container, it’s worth shopping around for pieces that suit your lifestyle.

Utilise dead space

Instead of leaving empty space behind a lounge that doesn’t sit straight against a wall place a narrow table with drawers or a small bureau desk there. Not only will it look aesthetically pleasing but will provide additional storage.

Make use of space provided

the

wall

Use floating shelves to show off a collection of decorative objects and mementos. Stagger the shelves for a unique look. Basic shelves serve as a strong basis for rotating displays. They will go with almost anything, which means you can change the look of the vignette, leaving the shelves in place and avoid making any more holes in your apartment

Interactive Cooktop Whirlpool is also showcasing a cooktop that can be controlled by voice or touch. This interactive concept establishes the cooktop as a sort of center of command in the kitchen. You would be able to access weather reports and a calendar from the cooktop, and even brainstorm ingredients for your next meal.

The Instant Pot IP-DUO60 prepares meals from any generation at the press of a button. Kitchen appliances seem to add more functionality every time you turn around. In fact, considering the amount of connected appliances that keep appearing, one doesn’t even have to turn around; your updates will appear in the notification panel. Having appliances that talk to each other (as well as to your smartphone) This is the third-generation of the multicooker from Canadian company Double Insight Inc. The new device comes with 14 built-in programs for automatic cooking. The nice part is the ability to customize them to your needs. For example, the pressure cooker can cook either on a low or high setting, while the saute function can be used at three different temperatures. But don’t worry, modern people, the new multicooker may embrace multiple cooking modes as a way to add value, but that doesn’t mean it’s doomed to the past -- in fact, a Bluetooth-enabled version was just introduced.

iWatch The iWatch, seen here in a concept design, is on our list for the second year in a row, and now we want it more than ever. We first heard reports of this mythical item in late 2012, which left us intrigued about what could come in 2013. But the year came and went without a single wearable gadget from Apple. Instead, we had to make do with countless iWatch rumors as Google, Samsung and others released wearable gadgets of their own. That’s left us hungrier than ever for the iWatch. Rumours about an iWatch have been circulating since as far back as 2011, when it was believed that Apple had employed several new wearable computing experts to work on such device. In 2013 though, the speculation soared, with reports suggesting that Apple has a team of 100 people working on an iWatch, other reports claiming Apple has hired the Nike FuelBand developer, and rumours that two sizes of iWatch are in the works. This begs the question: is it too late for Apple? If Apple does decide to launch an iWatch now it will be way behind its rivals, at least time-wise (no pun intended). Apple will need to make its iWatch exceptional with all-new, never-beforeseen technology that blows competitors out of the water.

Guitar SideKick Aspiring and adept guitar players alike will appreciate the new Guitar SideKick, a tiny clamp designed to easily fit in a pocket or case. You will affix it to the guitar’s headstock at the end of the neck to mount your iPhone on. Aimed at fretted instrument players, the $19.99 accessory provides an at-a-glance overview of your music lessons and tutorials, as well as tablature and chord charts. A special app is available to tune your instrument and record as you play (Griffin says the SideKick has no effect on tuning or playability). The Guitar Sidekick will be available March 2014.

Tile Users who have a habit of losing their keys and other items will want to pre-order Tile. The square-shaped device is used to keep track of items that users could easily lose but wouldn’t want to, such as a phone or a purse. Using Bluetooth, Tile connects to users’ smartphones, letting them track the distance to their lost items using an app on their device. Users can also activate a Tile to ring, helping them find their misplaced item with the help of a sound. Even more helpful, users can tap into the network of Tile users to find items that have been stolen, such as a bike. Perfect Homes International Magazine
