his summer colour is very definitely back. But as for which shades to choose, it’s a case of pretty much anything goes. They will be used in every imaginable combination – tone on tone, contrasting, natural, exotic with nontraditional blends scoring the highest style points.

There are a few hero colours, notably blue. Especially popular are the darker shades like deep navy, indigo and inky blue, which make a good alternative to black, as well as ocean-inspired tones from aqua to teal, which contrast well with 2014’s copper metallic.

www.modernvintageinterior.tumblr.com

Speaking of which, the copper trend has given rise to Dulux’s colour of 2015, copper blush, a soft pinky orange shade with plenty of depth..

elebrate a bright and heady mix of global traveling influences, decadent tribal patterns and bold colour combinations with this impactful summer trend. Vibrant graphic designs are printed and mixed together to form a dramatic look that is both striking and fun. The synergy between colour and textile design is at the heart of this trend. Designers are looking at traditional crafting processes and modernizing them with new materials and colour combinations to create something innovative and otherworldly. Textiles are a mixture of bright prints, rich weaved tapestries and hand dyed finishes. Walls are hand painted with visible brush strokes and raw edges. Key materials: textiles, wood, wicker, plastic, wire, silver, gold, printed ceramics and digital prints.

ou can almost hear the waves crashing against the shore and the smell of the fresh sea air.

The emotive feeling of the beach is prevalent when relaxing and the BEACH HOUSE trend is brought into your home. White furniture, crisp, ombre glass, and natural elements are used to build your private haven. The BEACH HOUSE trend uses blue, aqua and teal tones inspired by the sea, on our glass and gift ranges, with white and soft greys to freshen it up for the traditional beach house feel. There is even the surprising element of soft teal coloured furniture to enhance the ambient atmosphere of a coastal lifestyle.Â

he RECLAIMED trend encapsulates a raw, pared back feel of the warehouse loft look. Materials are not overworked and even though different forms are taken from the original source, they still have an edge of the industrial feel and qualities. Materials apparent in this trend are; unfinished wood, bare wire work and raw unfinished metals along with many other natural fibres. Mixing all these elements within the home will give the upcycled look that is a key factor for home decor in SS15.

INSPIRATIONAL ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS

As main characteristics of this architecture, the buildings use the winds and natural lights to create the different ambiences and temperatures inside the house, at the same time, they are lifted from the ground to avoid the humidity of coming inside the house, mainly when the cross ventilation is achieved by the orientation. The use of corridors with long overhangs wrapping the house is something pretty common in this architecture to integrate successfully the interior. Your carriage awaits… New Urban Living

52

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

You don’t have to be a rail enthusiast to see the green potential and creative genius involved with turning old railway carriages into living environments.

Y

ou may instantly reject the idea of living in some old railway carriages, they’re long and thin, incredibly heavy, and hard to transport once they’re off the tracks. So this begs the question why on earth would anybody want to use one after they’ve been decommissioned, let alone live in one? There are many reasons why actually. As you can imagine, old railway carriages are normally much cheaper than buying a traditional house outright. It’s also extremely green. Buying up an old railway carriage will stop it from being destroyed and potentially harming the environment. Like shipping containers, they are relatively easy to convert yourself, and with a starting price of roughly £5000 – £30,000 you can see why this trend is picking up speed! Transporting the carriage will cost several thousands of pounds and with the installation costs, materials and labour costs needed to make it habitable a fully converted carriage would set you back near to £100,000, which in todays’ market is very cheap for an energy efficient home.

So what are THE PROS AND CONS OF A CONVERTED RAILWAY CARRIAGE?

L

iving in a converted railway carriage has its fair share of both positive and negative aspects. It’s for you to decide whether it’s worth the investment. With a converted railway carriage being such a departure from a normal type of home environment, it can be expected that there are going to be some major downfalls as well as eco-friendly selling points.

Here’s what they are: Pro 1: Old converted railway carriages can be very cheap With the rough price of an older converted railway carriage being between £5000 – £30,000, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t good value considering the surprisingly large size of them.

Pro 2: Converted railway carriages are a very green form of construction

If your focus is on making your new home as green as possible, you’re in luck. At least with a converted railway carriage

you will already not have used any new materials to construct your new home apart from a few little things such as steps, lighting and insulation.

Pro 3: Converted railway carriages will provide an original home that will be a talking point amongst friends, family and the community You may get quite a few visitors to your new home who you don’t even know. There will probably be quite a bit of interest from local people and rail enthusiasts who are interested in the work you’ve done to it. You would definitely be in possession of a home which is different from everyone else’s, and being different is always going to get you noticed. Being known as someone who is promoting the salvage of things like old railway carriages instead of letting them be destroyed is not a bad thing at all.

PERFECT HOMES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE

55

SADLY IT’S NOT ALL GOOD NEWS! Con

1: Older converted railway carriages aren’t as well insulated as newer ones, which are guaranteed to be more expensive Old converted railway carriages might be cheaper to buy, but they’ll be more expensive to fit sufficient insulation and more efficient heating in. With their thinner, overly conductive wall material, you’ll have a hard job feeling warm in the winter and less hot in the summer. Newer trains will naturally have better insulation, but you’ll be looking at a very huge price tag to buy one in the first place.

Con 2: Converted railway carriages can also be very un-green

You may not be using many building materials, but you’ll have to figure out a way of transporting the carriage to where you want it to be. This will likely 56

require some kind of very large, heavy road vehicle, which needless to say will not be good at all for carbon emissions. Railway carriages are extremely heavy and cumbersome and are only easily transportable on rail lines. Also, as mentioned above, older carriages aren’t going to be easy to insulate.

Con 3: Older converted railway carriages will need regular maintenance Whatever money you save and notability you gain could be short-lived if you don’t regularly maintain your railway carriage house. Old carriages in particular will need lots of internal and external maintenance to the paintwork and structure to keep it from succumbing to general wear and tear, weather damage, and the inevitable alterations to fit in modern appliances, pipework and wiring.

Kinpurnie Castle Newtyle Hill and Keillor Hill, Angus

K

inpurnie Castle lies a short distance to the west of the village of Newtyle in the county of Angus and commands the most outstanding views over the Vale of Strathmore. Dundee, known as the ‘City of Discovery,’ lies some 12 miles to the east and provides an excellent range of shops and professional services, together with good leisure facilities. Home to the universities of Dundee and Abertay, Dundee is an established centre of excellence of education and life sciences. The city’s renowned cultural facilities will be further enhanced by the building of the V & A Design Museum due to be

completed in 2018. There are a number of private schools in the area including Dundee High School and St Leonards in St Andrews with further schools in both Perthshire and Edinburgh. There is a primary school in Newtyle whilst secondary schools can be found in Dundee and Monifieth. Both Edinburgh and Aberdeen lie some 65 miles distant and can both be accessed easily by road and by rail from Dundee. Further the airport in Dundee provides regular daily flights to London Stansted. There is a wide array of outdoor pursuits within reach of Kinpurnie Castle. Walking

can be enjoyed both on the Sidlaw Hills and slightly further afield to the north in the Grampian and Cairngorm mountain ranges. Shooting and stalking may be taken locally as well as salmon fishing on the River Tay, North Esk and South Esk. For the golfer there are numerous courses within a comfortable distance including Carnoustie, which hosted the Open Golf Championship in both 1999 and 2007. St Andrews, with its world famous golf courses, lies to the south east with the challenging 18 hole course at Piperdam nearby. Sailing can be enjoyed on the Tay Estuary and around the coast.

K

inpurnie Castle is a magnificent Category ‘B’ Listed mansion house in the Scots baronial style, dating back to 1907. It has a harled and painted exterior lying under a slated roof and very much encapsulates the Scots baronial style with a castellated tower, turrets, fine dressed stone architectural details, astragal windows and a highly ornate porte cochere of dressed stone, castellated pediment and arched astragal windows. The flair of the exterior continues in the interior and boasts a wealth of period features throughout including oak panelled reception hall with fine oak staircase, polish wooden floors, panelled doors with original door furniture, ornate cornicing and ceiling plasterwork together with magnificent fireplaces. Despite the scale and proportions of Kinpurnie Castle it is surprisingly manageable. The principal accommodation on the ground floor comprises an oak panelled reception hall, four elegant reception rooms with marble fireplaces and elaborate ceilings and cornicing. The kitchen and number of stores and pantries are found in the practical east wing. There are four bedroom suites, four further bedrooms and four bathrooms with eight further secondary bedrooms all lying over the first and second floors. There is potential to enhance the principal bedroom suites by altering the existing layout to create en suite bathrooms in the existing dressing rooms. On the lower ground floor there is a series of storage rooms which could be converted to provide a state of the art gymnasium or entertainment suite.

K

inpurnie Castle was designed by Thoms & Wilkie of Dundee and built in 1907-8 for Sir Charles Cayzer, the ship owner and founder of the clan line, who had recently acquired the estate from the Earl of Wharncliff’s Trustees. The gate lodge and entrance gates, together with the carriage house, were designed and built at the same time together with the walled garden. It has all been described by John Gifford in the Buildings of Scotland: Angus and Dundee (Published year 2012) as being in the free C17 Scotstyle, otherwise known as Scots Renaissance. The finest craftsmen of the time were employed to decorate the house and the magnificent plaster work is by the Bromsgrove Guild, a company of artists and designers associated with the Arts & Crafts movement. Probably the most famous of their works are the main gates of Buckingham Palace. Kinpurnie Castle Lodge Kinpurnie Castle Lodge is a category ‘B’ listed gate lodge lying within the castle policies and adjacent to the northern entrance. Built over one and a half storeys it provides a kitchen, sitting room, dining room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The lodge is surrounded by mature woodland and sits within its own garden.

L

ying to the east of Kinpurnie Castle is the original carriage house constructed in the same baronial style as the castle and now providing garaging for four cars with a three bedroom flat above. Â

Situated to the south east of the castle is a purpose built four car garage constructed in a traditional style with a clock tower.

K

inpurnie Castle lies within extensive gardens and grounds. A sweeping drive leads from the two principal entrances to an extensive gravelled sweep to the south and west. Beyond are the extensive southerly lawns bounded by the mature woodlands beyond. To the north is a balustraded terrace with gently sweeping lawns below, interdispersed with formal rose beds. Lying to the east of the castle and beyond the carriage house is an extensive walled garden extending to almost 2 acres and developed in the 1920s by Eileen, Lady Cayzer. In the traditional Scottish style it lies away from the house and its formal flower garden would have been the focus for a gentle stroll.

Kinpurnie Castle The walled garden of today is laid out for both pleasure and utility; the north/ south axis of the flower garden provides a wonderful view over Strathmore to the hills beyond and there are strategically placed benches throughout the flower garden which boasts magnificent herbaceous borders and roses. Beyond the flower garden is a highly productive kitchen garden providing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the castle. There are also extensive glasshouses which produced house plants as well as exotic fruit and tender vegetables. Beyond the walled garden to the east is a fieldof about 17 acres down to pasture and providing ideal grazing for horses.

Dulux Colour of the Year 2015:

F

rom lights to pans, candle holders and vases, the love affair with warm metallics seems no closer to ending. Which is fine with us. So besotted are we with copper, we created our Colour of the Year to not only take inspiration from these coppery hues, but to compliment them perfectly. So, welcome, Copper Blush.

Copper Blush

Copper Blush is a perfect take on this metallic trend, but adopting a chalkier, cooler finish than the metallic family, the colour really comes alive when combined with pink, clay toned neutrals, crisp white as well as shimmering metallics. Beautiful and versatile and the perfect colour to modernise any home, are you ready to show your metal?

4 of the most influential ARCHITECTS

SB Shigeru Ban Aesthetics of Shigeru Bans Architecture Ban stance as Japans most prominent architect is supported by his ability to establish his own unique style inthe age where the infusion of information and manifestation of the multitude of styles often defineJapanese contemporary architecture.

His design philosophy is to create uniquely free and openspace with concrete rationality of structure and construction method. Ban creates entirely new spaces using such materials aspaper tubes.

He reexamines the existing materials inrecycled forms and uses them in ways no one had ever thought of previously. Thus, he addresses environmental concerns and alludes to the Japanese spiritual preference for natural housing materials.“In Japan, where the visual structure is usually so loud, a seemingly endless cacophony of signs and symbols, thecalm simplicity of Bans projects speakswith tremendous strength. Silence is the powerful voice Ban uses.” Paper Pavillion. Curtain Wall House Shigeru Ban is regarded by most to be one of the worlds most innovative architects, using environmentally-friendly materials that are easy to transport, store and recycle. Ban began to experiment with unconventional materials in 1986, when he used paper, instead of wood, to build an Alvar Aalto exhibition display.

False facade Ban played with the idea of a glass curtain wall system, and took the terminology quite literally when he decided to envelop the exterior of the house in conventional domestic drapery.

He uses anything from beer cases to cardboard,to paper tubes to tenting fabric. The Curtain Wall House is one of his well-known projects that that a part of an exhibition the Museum of Modern Art in 1999 called The Un-Private House. True to the title of the exhibition, the Curtain Wall House embodies openness and transparency between interior and exterior. Billowing curtains are the only means of providing privacy to the residents of the house. Without the fabric, the house becomes completely exposed to the busy street.“Mies invented the glass curtain wall, but I just used a curtain”Shigeru Ban

Though it may seem that the drapery is hanging freely at the exterior, behind it there is a series of sliding glass doors that provide protection from unfavorable weather conditions, yet still create a feeling of transparency.

96

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

The curtain that Ban uses drapes over the two story structure and acts as a facade wall when drawn over the structure.

When closed during the day, the curtain still filters in the daylight into the living areas of the house, traditional Japanese rice paper functioning like the rice-paper screens, alluding to screens Japanese architecture. When pulled back, the curtain allow the air to enter the interior space freely, and are excellent as a passive cooling mechanism.

SL Studio Libeskind

Studio Libeskind is involved in designing and realizing a diverse array of urban, cultural and commercial projects around the globe. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past. Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build. Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. The Studio has offices overlooking the World Trade Center site in New York, and is also located in central Milan. The Milan Studio includes a product design division, Libeskind Design.

This gleaming, chocolate-colored structure, designed as one folded plan, and set into the green Connecticut countryside. Created for a client that wanted a mixture of the avant-garde and the cozy, the tour-de-force is clad in mirror-finish, bronzed stainless steel. Studio Libeskind specified the cladding to accentuate luster and exaggerate the changes of light and season. The interior is solid stained white oak.

Within the scrolling of the ribbon, enclosure is achieved via large glass planes that at junctures virtually disappear. There are porches on every side and from the interior, unimpeded picturesque views of hay meadows and distant foothills. The interior finishes, cabinetry, and builtin furniture are custom handcrafted from locally harvested oak planks. These elements, along with subtle elevation changes in the concrete floor distinguish the kitchen, living, dining,

and sleeping areas without separating them. Circulation throughout the home is seamless and free-flowing, a theme which carries through in the nearly-nonexistent distinction between inside and outside. Challenging both traditional and modern notions of “the house in the landscape, this bold design does not sacrifice itself to its natural setting, but selectively incorporates the elements therein for the enhancement of both house and landscape.

How to sell your

HO ME W

ithin the last edition of Perfect Homes Magazine we looked at the benefits of “Home Staging”, how it makes your house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer, more loving and, best of all it how it makes your home more appealing to buyers. So now you have a show-stopping home, de-cluttered, pristine and ready for inspection but what do you do next. Selling your home especially if you’ve never done it before, can be surprisingly timeconsuming and emotionally challenging. Strangers will come into your home and poke around in your closets and cabinets. They will criticize a place that has probably become more than just four walls and a roof to you, and then, to top it all off, they will offer you less money than you think your home is worth. With no experience and a complex, emotional transaction on your hands, it’s easy for first-time homesellers to make lots of mistakes, but with a little know-how, many of these pitfalls can be avoided altogether. 104

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

Getting Emotionally Involved: Once you decide to sell your home, you should try and start thinking of yourself as a businessperson and a home-seller rather than as the home’s owner. By looking at the transaction from a purely financial perspective, you’ll distance yourself from the emotional aspects of selling the property that you’ve undoubtedly created many memories in.

Not Hiring an Agent: Although real estate agents command a hefty commission, trying to sell your home on your own, especially if you haven’t done it before, is probably ill advised. A good agent will help you set a fair and competitive selling price for your home that will increase your odds of a quick sale. An agent can also help take some of the high emotion out of the process by interacting directly with potential buyers so you don’t have to, and vetting and eliminating time-wasters who only want to look at your property but have no intention of buying. An agent will also have more experience in negotiating home sales than you do, potentially helping you get more money than you could on your own. Further, if any problems crop up during the process - and they commonly do - an experienced professional will be there to handle them for you.

Setting an Unrealistic Price: Setting the right asking price is key, remember the comparable market analysis you did when you bought your home to figure out a fair offering price? Well buyers will do this for your home, too, so as a seller you should be one step ahead of the game. Overpriced properties do not sell no matter how stunning and attractive they look. Your agent should know what a fair and competitive selling price is.

Expecting To Get Your Asking Price: Any smart buyer will negotiate, and if you want to complete the sale, you’ll have to play the game.

Also a good agent will have the tools and knowledge to market your property more effectively, the agent you choose should have a good local knowledge, they should

Most people want to list their homes at a price that will attract buyers while still leaving some breathing room for negotiations. This will allow the buyer to feel like he or she is getting a good value and allow you to get the amount of money you need from the sale. Of course, whether you end up with more or less than your asking price will likely depend on whether you’re in a buyer’s market or a seller’s market and on how well you have staged your home.

first and foremost place your property upon multiple listing sites (MLS) to ensure all the other agents and more importantly buyers scanning the internet know your property is for sale, they should prepare sales material for potential buyers, and if you’re lucky they will also advertise your property within local papers and magazines, after all not everyone is computer savvy! Don’t be afraid to ask for these things to be done, after all the agent is working for you and will only get paid when the property is sold so it is in their interest to do as much as possible to make this a reality.

Poor Listing Photos: First impressions count. Most people will view your property online before contacting your agent so good photos are a MUST. Good photos should be crisp and clear, should be taken during the day when there is plenty of natural light available, and should showcase your home’s best assets.

Selling in Winter: Winter, especially around the holiday season, is typically a very slow time of year for home sales. People are busy with social engagements and the cold, gloomy weather makes it less appealing. Because fewer buyers are likely to be looking, it may take longer to sell your home and you may not get as much money.

Trying to Hide Significant Problems: Any problem with the property will be uncovered during the buyer’s inspection, so there’s no point in hiding it. Either fix the problem ahead of time, price the property below market value to account for the problem, or list the property at a normal price but offer the buyer a credit to fix the problem. Realize that if you don’t fix the problem in advance, you may turn away a fair number of buyers who want a turnkey home. Having your home inspected before listing it is a good idea if you want to avoid costly surprises once the home is under contract.

Not Accommodating Potential Buyers: If someone wants to view your house, you need to accommodate this person, even if it is inconvenient for you. And yes, you have to clean and declutter the house before every single visit. A buyer won’t know and won’t care if your house was clean last week if it isn’t clean when he or she views it. It’s a lot of work, but stay focused. Even if you do all of these things when selling your home, it’s best to prepare mentally and financially for less-thanideal scenarios. The house may sit on the market for far longer than you expect, especially in a declining market. However, if you avoid the costly mistakes listed here, it will go a long way toward helping you put your best foot forward and achieving that seamless, lucrative sale every homeseller dreams of… Good luck! White is a classic colour, and it’s also a trendy one. In recent years, all-white interiors, or almost all-white interiors, have been making a big splash. In some ways, a white interior betokens wealth and a degree of single urbanity (it’s hard to keep clean and not a great colour wall-to-wall in a house full of kids); but with wipe down surfaces and washable textiles it doesn’t have to be completely out of reach for all of us.It’s a tranquil and relaxing colour; some chromatherapists say that because white is made

up of all the colours on the light spectrum, it’s a colour of balance and harmony, and will bring those qualities to an interior. White will certainly bring light to a space, thanks to its light reflective qualities, which is one reason it’s the most popular colour out there for walls but how can you pull this trend off without your home looking like a hospital room or a the set of a Scandinavian music video? Here we offer some ideas of how you can make an all-white interior work for you.

ADD JUST A LITTLE BIT OF COLOUR

Each of the rooms starts with an all-white palette and adds just a tiny bit of colour to liven things up. The colourful items keep these rooms from feeling sterile, and the white backdrop makes those little bits of colour really stand out.

ADD BLACK

A little bit of black (or dark grey) is a good way to ground an all-white interior — and the added does of contrast keeps things interesting.

ADD A FEW GOLD ACCENTS

Gold (or metallic) accents instantly add a certain je ne sais quoi to any room, and all white interiors are no exception. Choose subtle gold accents for an understated look, or a single large piece for a big impact.

120

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

ADD WARM WOODS This is a beautiful look — an all-white interior with just one (or just a few) warm wood pieces. The wood adds warmth and texture to interiors that might otherwise seem a little unapproachable.

If you want a truly white on white on white look, this is the way to go — pick pieces of the same colour, but in different textures, so the eye doesn’t get bored. A variation on this is to choose pieces in a variety of white shades, so they play off each other and create visual texture. Although these rooms are almost all white, the abundance of texture makes them seem simultaneously cozy and bright.

Julia Roberts Colonial Elegance

Julia Roberts has listed her sevenbedroom, four-bathroom home situated in Kauai’s North Shore in Hanalei, Hawaii for $29.9 million, Walking up to the home, you’ll know you’re in the Aloha State—and not just because of the magnificent views of Hanalei Bay and the lush, green mountains of Kauai. The home’s tropical design and island vibe are enough to make you want to bust out your grass skirt. Under the classic Hawaiian gabled roof you’ll find a large covered porch, perfect for watching the sun set over the Na Pali Coast. Inside, the home has spacious rooms under impressive open-beam ceilings,

providing a soothing ambiance when you want to unwind after a day of surfing the waters of Hanalei or hiking the Powerline Trail. If you prefer being cosy indoors, the home has wide wall-to-wall windows to let in the plentiful island sunshine. Outside, the home sits on one of the island’s last remaining large double lots. In case you find the home’s 3,792 square feet insufficient, it is approved for expansion up to 9,000 square feet. While it’s not a global A-lister, the home has achieved a bit of local renown. Known as the Faye Property, it was purchased by sugar cane magnate Hans Peter Faye in 1915. The businessman purchased

adjoining lots to expand his own little slice of the beach. The lots were never broken up, and owners of this property enjoy twice as much beachfront as their neighbours. The surrounding neighbourhood is no slouch. Roberts may be moving out, but the new property owners will have plenty of opportunities to rub elbows with famous folks. The home sits on Hawaii’s laid-back and celeb-laden North Shore, where Pacific Business News reported Chuck Norris and Mark Zuckerberg have recently purchased property. Olivia Newton-John’s Florida Mansion

What was once singer Olivia NewtonJohn’s personal Xanadu has become a heartbreaker. Two years after deciding to sell her house in Jupiter, FL, Newton-John still hasn’t found a buyer. With an asking price of only for $5.5 million the property has been reduced from the original price of $6.2 million. Potential buyers may be turned off by the horrible suicide on the property months after the house was put on the market. Several reports indicate that actress and TV show host Rosie O’Donnell had planned to buy the house for $5.6 million but withdrew after the suicide.

In order to alleviate any fears of bad mojo, Newton-John had an exorcism performed on the property, according to the Daily Mail. The 5,500-square-foot house sits on the shore of the Indian River, and it has a dock that can support a 50-foot boat. You’re only minutes away from Juno Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. You can’t help but notice that this house is bright, reflecting Florida’s sunny climate. The exterior is painted a pastel peach colour, while the interior is a bright white from floor to ceiling, which works with the natural light to illuminate the rooms.

Still Awaits a Buyer After Two Years

The living room is inviting, with a vaulted ceiling, a wall of windows, and French doors that brighten the room. Walk through the adjacent dining area and you’ll find yourself in the kitchen that features a bar and cabinets made with driftwood which exude a rustic charm. A small sitting area is next to the kitchen; you can use it as a family room or a breakfast nook. There’s also a full bar, again made from driftwood. The master bedroom upstairs has a balcony and a wonderful sitting area with bay windows and a view of the river. And you’ll love all the storage space in the dressing room.

Living On The Water

House-boats Around the World

Depending on where you travel around the world, house-boating will always be a different experience. In some countries house-boating is seen as an activity or are used simply as holiday homes, while in countries house-boats have become mainstream and people live permanently upon them. Like a car, prices vary depending on the condition and size of the boat, from a few hundred pounds to many thousands. However, prices for permanently moored houseboats will reflect local property values and that of the mooring. PERFECT HOMES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE

INDIA M

any rivers in India have communities where houseboats are a person’s primary dwelling. Dal Lake in Srinagar, located in the Kashmir region of India, is well known for houseboat trips, while dwellings in the state of Kerala are typically moored. The houseboats used on the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, are innovative adaptations of the traditional cargo carriers typically they are 60 - 70 feet long and around 15 feet wide at the centre part. The body of the boat is made of wooden planks fastened by coconut fibre ropes. The roof is usually made of palm leaves on top of bamboo shafts. Cashew and nut oils are used to protect the houseboat’s exteriors.

PARIS

F

rance boasts extensive navigable waterways (rivers and canals), which are perfect for those whose ideal home is one that floats The fact that Paris property prices are so astronomical doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t afford to live right in the middle of Paris. How does the Seine river sound? The Seine River runs through Paris, France crossing the 16th, 15th, 7th, 8th, 1st, 6th, 4th, 5th, 13th and 12tharrondissements. A

number of lucky and adventurous people have made their homes in anchored vessels on the river. In all there are about 1,000 houseboats in Paris, their postal addresses are written on the boats! The most common kind of Paris houseboat is the peniche or barge. This is a flat bottomed vessel specifically designed for narrow canals or rivers. The peniche are not necessarily cramped living spaces as you might have imagined a boat to be, in fact a peniche can cover

220m² and include outside terraces and spacious interiors. Some peniche include more than one bedroom, a living space, bathrooms and even individual studio “apartments” as well as the rooftop terraces. A huge luxury peniche of this kind can cost up to €980,000. Or you could have a more modest 40 meter long, 176m² peniche moored near the Eiffel Tower!

B

ritain’s canals and rivers have long had a magnetic attraction for people looking for a slower pace of life, but it seems that growing numbers of tenants and homeowners struggling against rising prices are turning to a life along the waterways. Houseboats can offer the same space as a flat and, with the peaceful, waterside location, are often an interesting option for many buyers. Often, they are considerably cheaper than a flat of a similar size and,

with the wildlife and tranquil outlook, are gaining mass popularity – especially among families and young professionals. There are about 10,000 people living along the 100-plus miles of canals in London alone, one of the most sought-after mooring spot in London is the Wenlock Basin, off the Regent’s Canal near the Angel, Islington, and with the average house price in London a staggering £514,000, compared to £80,000 for a house-boat you can see why so many

young professionals are turning to living on the water. Mooring fees do vary around the UK but within the Basin they are around £1,350 per quarter, which includes maintenance and use of its facilities, including security, communal areas and refuse collection which is considerably cheaper than the quarterly council taxes of normal homes.

AMSTERDAM Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is known as the “Venice of the North” and is famous for the many houseboats found along its canals it even has the Houseboat Museum, an old boat called the “Hendrika Maria”. Built in 1914 and renovated into a house-boat in the ‘60s.

The most sought after location for houseboating is The Prinsengracht part of the 17th Century built canal district, which since 2010 has held its place on the UNECSO Cultural Heritage list.

In the old days living on a houseboat meant you were poor. Nowadays Amsterdam houseboats are extremely popular and only for the happy few with money. Houseboats in Amsterdam are generally not motorized, but moored to a fixed spot in the city. There are two kinds: a house built on a floating pontoon made of concrete. We call this a modern ark. Of the older and probably more charming kind are the old metal ships that have been transformed into a houseboat, these are called ‘living ships’. 156

FLORIDA FLORIDA, USA In the United States, house-boating has become an increasingly popular tourist activity, where people will rent a houseboat for weekends, long weekends or weeklong vacations. For those who have taken the plunge to live all-year round it is considered that Florida with its warm climate and open waterways is the ideal locations. Fort Lauderdale: Popularly called the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale has the Venetian feel of a floating city. Its 165 miles of canals and waterways weave all around and through the city. And combined with Florida’s year-round boating weather that means boaters of all types can easily spend entire days without setting foot on land. Tampa Bay: The amount of sun on Tampa Bay alone would make it a contender for the best places to live and boat. St. Petersburg straddles the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay and averages 361 days of sunshine per year. Then there’s the bay, which has more than 100 tributaries refreshing it. With that much waterfront land to work with, it’s no wonder there’s been such an explosion of home sites during the past two years; MiraBay and Little Harbor alone will total nearly 3,000 homes with water access when completed.

Pros And Cons Of Living On The Water People all over the world live on boats – from fishing trawlers, narrow-boats to yachts so if you’ve ever toyed with the idea of being lulled to sleep by lapping water, greeted good morning by a cawing gull, and fishing from your bedroom window, a houseboat or floating home may just be a dream come true.

What’s the Difference? Though most floating homes are called houseboats, there is a difference between the two. A houseboat is capable of leaving the dock under power. It must have seaworthy hulls, engines and navigational equipment. A floating home, on the other hand, isn’t considered a water vessel, but a structure built on a floating apparatus.

Advantages of Living on the Water There are lots of advantages to living on a houseboat. In some parts of the world a houseboat isn’t considered real property, so you won’t be paying property taxes. In others it may be considered personal property, and you’ll be levied a small personal property tax annually however this is comparatively cheaper than any city residence. You also won’t need a gardener or a snow shovel when you live on the water. Plus, you are guaranteed a water view and

nobody can build anything that will block that view.

Disadvantages of Houseboat Life You may escape the dreaded annual property tax bill by living on a houseboat, but you’ll pay other associated fees, and some of them, depending on where you live, can be significant. Mooring fees – what you’ll pay for the privilege to dock your floating home – come in two flavours. The first is the basic monthly rental fee and the second is the homeowner’s association fee. The mooring fee is payment for the actual slip and generally includes utility costs, such as garbage collection, electricity and water. Depending on where you live, the “landlord” may pay taxes and insurance for the moorage and to maintain the common areas. If the community is managed by a homeowners association, you will most

likely pay more at first and then less of a mooring fee on a monthly basis. This is because you’ll generally purchase the slip and won’t be paying rent for it. Though you’ll pay more in the beginning for this setup, if your state taxes your floating home as real property, your annual tax bill will be lower because you’ll only pay taxes on the actual home. The slip isn’t assessed as real property. Of course, all of this depends on where you moor your houseboat. Even within one city, each facility may have its own set of fees. Finally, homeowners insurance is more expensive for a houseboat than a landbased home.

The Purchase Process Financing a houseboat may be challenging, banks aren’t very keen to offer finance for what they deem a luxury. So be prepared to pay cash

Property developer Crown Group has revealed the first images of Infinity by Crown, a mix-use project that will be the crown jewel of Green Square in Sydney. Australia’s largest urban renewal project, the Green Square project is set to become a true exemplar of sustainable living with developments linked to recycled water, green open space, and integrated public transport system that is expected to attract 40,000 new residents and 22,000 new workers by 2030. Designed by Koichi Takada Architects (KTA), Infinity by Crown will feature approximately 416 residential units and 5,000 square metres of retail and F&B area. The 20-storey tower’s fluid architectural form is sculpted along the flow of traffic and public activities around

the perimeter of the building. Like its namesake, the shape of the tower is constructed by two blending loops; the public loop and the residential loop. Opening to north side of the site, the public loop is designed to activate the plaza and streetscape while the residential loop provides amenities and open space for the property’s residents and lets in fresh air and sunshine. The two loops merge into one continuous form and as it tilts outwards, it provides solar protection to the adjacent Green Square Plaza and connects the property to the public domain. Crown Group plans to launch the project for sale later this year. Prices to be confirmed For more information visit: www.crowngreensquare.com.

Smartflower POP– the world’s first all-in-one solar system:

Create effortless power generation in your own garden with the world’s first all-in-one solar system. 172

Smartflower POP Your own power generation begins as soon as the sun rises. Smartflower POP is inspired by the shape of a sunflower and automatically unfolds its 18 m2 of solar petals to form a perfect circle. The system is controlled astronomically and moves in two axes, always following the sun until the last rays have faded, and always maintaining an optimal 90-degree angle of incidence.

A design of timeless beauty Smartflower POP gives you independence – now and in the future. But this freedom should also satisfy your aesthetic demands. The design comes from GP design partners in Vienna. Smartflower POP is simple, efficient and perfectly formed. Its smart appearance is partly due to the panels of very thin glass, which are toughened yet highly transparent. This innovative glass is long-lived, exceptionally weatherproof and substantially reduces the total weight of the solar modules. This in turn enables the system to follow the path of the sun elegantly and optimises energy use. You can choose the colour of your own solar power plant yourself, from a selection that ranges from bright hues like “Berry” or “Jungle” through to the sophisticated “Pearl” or “Porcelain”.

Maximum solar energy Monocrystalline solar cells and intelligent circuitry, which optimises the connection of cells and solar modules across the total area, ensure that the solar energy yield is maximised. Conventional photovoltaic installations are attached to the rigid existing roof and so only face the sun at an ideal angle for a short period. The first all-in-one solar system is different: Smartflower POP produces enough electricity at the beginning and end of the day too, which increases the potential for autonomy significantly. The innovative system delivers clean power from breakfast through to dinner. When the sun goes down, the solar power plant automatically folds itself into the safe position.

“Nature provided us with our inspiration, as with so many innovations. The sunflower uses solar energy more efficiently than almost any other plant”, says Alexander Swatek, CEO of smartflower energy technology, explaining the design. “We wanted to enable more people than before to produce their own clean power for their home”, comments Swatek on the background to the Smartflower POP.

In a nutshell: it’s a smart solution Smart use: Smartflower POP is attached firmly to the ground at the chosen site (earth anchor or concrete foundation) and is fully operational in just one hour.

Smart cooling: the back-ventilated Smartflower POP modules are 1020°C cooler than rooftop installations – which makes them 5-10 per cent more powerful.

Smart tracking: the solar panels on Smartflower POP are always at the optimal angle to the sun thanks to its twin-axis tracking. The result is a yield of up to 40% more than rooftop installations.

Smart safety: sensors permanently monitor the wind speed. Smartflower POP automatically retracts its petals at 54 km/h to avoid damage. When the wind drops it unfolds them again – all fully automatically.

Smart cleaning: Smartflower POP removes the dust that reduces electricity production fully autonomously when it opens and closes its petals.

Smart mobility: Smartflower POP is mobile! If you move, you just take your solar power plant with you.

THE Underground Revolution Strolling along the streets of London past row upon row of pillared mansions and Victorian townhouses you’d never guess that far beneath your feet lays a subterranean world.

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

W

ith limited space, and property prices at a premium London has seen the demand for basement developments boom, with underground leisure lairs and the need for space all a necessity on today’s home buyer’s checklist. Basement development has been in existence since the 1980’s however over the past 5 years the demand has peeked, this demand has given rise to a new term – the iceburg house – which describes a modest looking home on the surface concealing a vast underground habitat which could be concealing playrooms, cinema rooms, bowling alleys, wine cellars, swimming pools or even underground parking facilities. Today’s basements are typically about one third of the entire home’s available space, if you already have a basement, then converting it to a useable room is a fairly simple and cost-effective procedure. If, however, you are creating a basement from scratch, the work will take a lot of time, be very disruptive and cost an enormous amount of money.

Key questions to consider if you’re converting a basement: How will the basement be lit? If it is impossible to get any natural light in, you may want to have a dark room, cinema room or space for parties. If, however, you are looking to create a kitchen, extra sitting room or a study, you need to think very carefully about whether you can live without natural light. If you can’t, then a small extension out into the garden area may allow you to add light pipes. These are cylindrical devices put in the ground that use reflective surfaces to pipe light into the room downstairs. Another option is a window well, which is a double-glazed window that lays flat on the ground and passes light through to the basement. The key benefit of a window well is that it can also improve ventilation.

How will you heat your basement? Ideally, get the cleanest, safest form of heating to help keep you warm. This will invariably be electricity, as any gas services require a flue to discharge emissions. As with loft conversions, it may be best to create a separate ring main for the electricity so you don’t overload your existing system.

PERFECT HOMES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE

187

How will you damp proof the basement? When you come to damp-proof your basement, there are two main methods – make sure that you choose the best for your project. - Cement-based system. This stops any water from entering your basement. It sets a bond with the masonry substrate, creating an impervious barrier. - Water membrane system. A membrane is sealed to the walls, ceiling and floor and then covered with plasterboard, screed or a floating timber floor. This system allows water to drain away, often with the help of a pump and drainage channel. This is particularly suited to waterproofing old Victorian basements. But is it all worth it. Living months with dust, noise, and angry stares from the neighbours, will a basement conversion add value to your home? Well first and foremost it’s only worth doing a basement conversion on high-end properties, and although there is no exact calculation the average a basement conversion adds is in the region of 25%. So if you want to live like an oligarch and crave a certain lifestyle then it seems that going down is just the tip of the iceberg in home development..

Boutique Moroccan Development L’ Amandier Releases Final Phase of Villas and Prepares for the Opening of Signature Hotel 19th March 2015: Boutique Moroccan development L’Amandier is delighted to announce that its final two villas are now available for sale in the year that will also see the opening of its very own 5 star hotel. Located atop a striking plateau in the heart of the Ouirgane Valley, the 12 acre L’Amandier estate occupies a coveted location with uninterrupted 360 degree views over the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and surrounding National Park. The final two residences that have just been released are located in a prime position amidst the secluded landscaped gardens and each feature a plunge pool, an internal courtyard, a private garden and a large roof terrace.

They are also just a stone’s throw from the hotel which will be opening towards the end of the year and whose amenities, including an infinity pool, restaurant, concierge, spa and hammam will be available for owners to use at their leisure. In total just fourteen villas built on only 6% of the land mass make up this special community, all of which are fully built. Designed by London-based architect Nick Gowing, the resort has established a new architectural vernacular marrying elegant modern living with traditional Moroccan heritage. The villas are built and finished to a standard rarely seen in the country and offer a unique investment proposition as the only resort-based self-contained villas in the area. They therefore have the ability to command a considerable rental yield of between 5 and 6%. Moreover with the opening of the boutique hotel, which will put the destination at the forefront of discerning travel connoisseurs’ itineraries the world over, capital growth is expected to reach 20 - 25% on completion of the resort in October this year.

Villa Lavande: ÂŁ329,000 two bedroom villa of 250sqm set on a plot of 1,362sqm

The villas are set amidst citrus groves, almond trees and bougainvillea and are supremely private dwellings that have been styled to ensure that the beauty of the surrounding landscape is incorporated into the living areas at every possible opportunity. Owners are invited to indulge in the tranquillity of their surroundings knowing that any additional requirements can be organised by the L’Amandier team on request from grocery deliveries to private gardening. Investors in the properties sold to date are predominantly British with a couple of French and Australian investors, all of whom have been attracted by the ‘truly idyllic setting, the people, the plateau, the beautiful mountain backdrop, the peace, quiet, privacy and the almost guaranteed year round sunshine’. The Ouirgane Valley itself remains a relatively undiscovered haven for lovers of dramatic landscapes and adventure with an appreciation of the finest things in life. Beyond the region’s remarkable natural beauty and spell-binding landscapes which are just an hour from Marrakech, it offers to visitors a myriad of activities including fishing, swimming, hiking, kayaking, jet skiing, skiing, horse riding, mountain biking, bird watching and trekking. What is more, Sir Richard Branson’s illustrious Kasbah Tamadot Hotel is just a short drive from the L’Amandier site. Developed by MHK International Ltd, which is run by brothers Anwar and Riaz Harland-Khan, L’Amandier is an environmentally sensitive project that has remained sympathetic to its surrounding environs. It is qualified as both zerocarbon and zero-waste. It also uses sustainable water, local and sustainable building materials and will encourage sustainable transport wherever possible. CEO Anwar Harland-Khan explains ‘Having found one of the most truly spectacular locations in Morocco, we set out to create a boutique hotel with private residences that would stand alongside the best destinations in the world. Our aim is to ensure that owners and guests alike are immersed into the raw beauty of the surrounding landscape without having to compromise on the highest standards of luxury. We’re delighted to see our vision becoming a reality and look forward to sharing the very special L’Amandier experience with all who visit’. 222

Country

Life

The French Country style of decorating, with its warm and casual feel is a style that will fit beautifully into your home.

French provincial decor is often interpreted as “romantic”, with lace, ruffles, flounces and bows. That’s not altogether surprising when you consider that the baroque lines of Louis XV furniture are often seen as quintessentially French, but what we tend to overlook, is that the elegance and appeal of contemporary French provincial decor comes from its no-frills restraint, its earthiness and nonchalance in mixing old and new. When you think of Provence and the French countryside, you’re sure to image lavender fields and bright sunshine. While there are many elements that contribute to the French Country style of decorating, the resulting look is always rustic, oldworld, and welcoming styles that fit

perfectly into both country houses and elegant old chateaux. The colours used to decorate in the French Country style cover the full spectrum of the colour wheel: Sunny yellow and soft gold, fiery red and burnt rust, bright grass green and dark hunter green, cobalt blue and soft ocean tones. Bright black and dull greys punctuate the bright colours and define accessory pieces, while rusted metal furniture, lighting fixtures, and furniture give warm colour and wonderful lines. An important element in pieces used in French Country style decorating is the use of natural materials. Rough stained

or painted plaster walls, hefty beamed ceilings and walls, delicate carved wood details, and chair seats woven of rush give texture and simplicity to the look. Natural stone floors are covered with wool or cotton rugs and by no means would a real French Country home be complete without a stone fireplace. Typical of French Country interiors are window shutters which are closed to keep the hot sun out in the summer. Windows and doorways are encircled with wildly growing vines and are painted in shades of green & purple as to blend harmoniously with the natural environment.

To create the look here are some easy tips to add that provincial touch to your home.

Flagstones Flagstone floors conjure up images of fairy-tale cottages, of boots piling the entry of manor houses, of a life lived outdoors. Using these on your floors can hark back to times gone by – just make sure they look slightly worn.

Florals While chintz may be English, soft florals look so pretty in a French cottage. Soft – Muted Colours Keep colours as soft as the light at dawn. Blush rose pinks, and grey blues, add touches of sage green or a little yellow to give it a lift. White should be muted too – no harsh pure white here, but a chalky hue. 250

THE ESSENTIAL COSTA DEL SOL WEBSITE - www.simplymedia-group.com

Floorboards If flagstones aren’t your thing, floorboards can add the patina of age. Steer away from new floating floors and neat edges and choose recycled wood with marks, dents and a rich colour. If you want a softer look, you can lime them – this gives them a silvery glow, as though worn smooth by the feet of generations.

Mismatched Furniture French houses collect furniture through the generations. Chairs are bought over the centuries and the variety of styles adds to the charm. This is not a style that calls for a three-piece suite.

Wood Kitchen Baking bread over a fire, arranging flowers from the hedgerow, sipping hot chocolate from a bowl (the french way) – all in a stunning kitchen. Eschew the stainless steel and formica for natural wood. Freestanding dressers and pine tables or cabinets built-in local wood create the homely atmosphere for long lazy lunches.

Fill free-standing dressers with sets of old crockery – in French blue or rose and white.

Toile de Jouy Toile de jouy is the ultimate French fabric – its monochromatic palette and timeless design is fabulous in almost any room – and certainly makes this theme sing. You can cover a whole room in it, or use it for cushions or curtains. It goes beautifully with a stripe of the same colour.

Old French Doors Many architectural salvage yards now have old doors. Replacing your doors with a pair of these, or even propping them against a wall will add immediate character to your room.

Zinc and Iron Old zinc and iron furniture really hits the mark with this look. The more battered the better. Add urns filled with flowers, old books and hand-blown glass.

DO ...

The do’s and don’ts

- Keep it simple. For example, if you’re redecorating a bedroom, use no more than one one sham per person, but cover that one in a fabulous antique or vintage French country fabric.

- Mix old & new, distressed & pristine. Arrange antiques & art with raw finds from nature for a look that evokes centuries and past generations. (Check out some quirky examples of French wall art f or inspiration.

- Use simple, quality fabrics. Go easy on the pattern. If you’re using toile, mix it with checks, stripes & solids. Use plenty of heavy linen (antique is great but not essential). Embroider a few monograms.

DON’T ... - Over decorate. I can’t emphasize this enough. A few intriguing, genuine details are much better aligned with a French spirit than, say, Louis XV reproduction furniture and / or toile de Jouy everywhere.

- Go matchy-matchy. French provincial decor is eclectic - you’ll find an antique chandelier over a simple platform bed, with modern art on the wall. Mismatched bedside tables, or chairs as bedside ‘tables’.

- Fake an antique look, especially for built-in cabinetry. In France, you can use an antique armoire with a modern fitted kitchen. No one bats an eyelid. No one would dream of trying to match the new kitchen cabinets to the antique armoire. PERFECT HOMES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE

Traditional British Craft Loosely speaking, thatching is the use of straw or grasses as a building material which dates back as far as the Bronze Age in Britain where thatched cottages and farm buildings were the norm in rural Britain. So why the attraction to thatch? First of all, the building practices of bygone Britain ran to lightweight, irregular materials, such as wattle and daub walls, and cruck beams. These walls were simply not made to take much weight, and thatch was by far the lightest weight material available. The study of materials used in thatch buildings can get pretty obscure, but basically, people used whatever was available locally. This meant materials as diverse as broom, sedge, sallow, flax, grass, and straw. The most commonly used was wheat straw in the south of England, and reeds in East Anglia. Norfolk reed is especially prized by thatchers, although in northern England and Scotland heather was frequently used. Although thatch was primarily used by the poor, occasionally great houses used this most common of materials.

PERFECT HOMES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE

Thatching

In 1300 the great Norman castle at Pevensey (Sussex) bought up 6 acres of rushes to roof the hall and chambers. Much later, in the late 18th century thatched cottages became an extremely popular theme with the “picturesque” painters, who tried to portray an idealized (Romantic/sanitized) version of nature. So what caused the decline of thatching? Primarily better transportation. The growing railway network in the Victorian era meant that cheap slate from Wales became easily available all over Britain. Agricultural machinery, particularly the combine harvester, had the unfortunate effect of making wheat straw unusable for thatching. This made Norfolk reed all the more prized, and now the latter material is grown specifically for use in thatching. Although thatching, like many rural crafts, has suffered from the encroachment of “civilization”, many property owners today recognize the value of keeping their thatched cottages, if for no other reason than that thatched cottages fetch a prime price in today’s real estate market! 262

hriepley House dates back to the 1800s and is an exquisite and extremely comfortable house.

Originally a modest farmhouse, it has evolved into the magnificent principal estate residence of today with an attractive tower in the style of the Scottish architect, Robert Lorimer, forming a distinguishing feature.

Thriepley House: There are four reception rooms, library, study, well-appointed kitchen and breakfast room on the ground floor. On the first floor are the master bedroom suite, four further double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shower room, together with three bedrooms, sitting room, shower room and kitchenette which have been used as a wing for children. Within the tower are a further bedroom, bathroom and store. The outbuildings, which form the east side of a gravelled courtyard, have been adapted to provide a suite of rooms for entertaining; a stunning orangery used as a dining room overlooks the immaculate Italianate gardens which have been meticulously planned and developed to create an ambience that one might enjoy in Continental Europe. There is garaging for three cars, a laundry and a number of stores for fuel, garden and estate equipment. A traditional cottage has been converted to a guest annexe and provides two further bedrooms and bathrooms.

Fascinating Tales Of How Countries Got Their Names Explorers named the countries they discovered using a little bit of legend and a dash of superstition. Many of us know the fascinating tale of how Greenland and Iceland got their names. The viking Floki Vildegarson named Iceland for its icebergs after suffering

misfortune, while Erik the Red named Greenland for itslush valleys to encourage his countrymen to settle there, and yet each country’s climate now seems to contradict its deceptive name. Here are 10 other tales behind the naming of countries.

The Forgotten Welshman Who Gave America Its Name... We’ve always discussed how various civilizations, some from Europe, might have reached the Americas hundreds of years before Columbus did. Columbus, who had landed on modern-day Haiti, was sure he was somewhere near India. One man who was part of his expeditions, the aforementioned Amerigo Vespucci, knew full well that this was a new continent, and his tales of this “new world” amazed two Germans who were reprinting an ancient treatise on geography. The Germans incorporated Vespucci’s discovery in the treatise’s preface: “There is a fourth quarter of the world which Amerigo Vespucci has discovered and which for this reason we can call ‘America’ or the land of Americo.” However, a second theory involves Welshman Richard Amerike (or Ap Meryk), who funded an expedition that reached Newfoundland in 1496. One piece of evidence supporting this theory is that the US flag’s “Stars and Stripes” design is similar to that of the Amerike family’s coat-of-arms. 278

CHINA All Under Heaven The most populous nation in the world has had numerous names. The word “China” itself was derived from the Qin Dynasty (pronounced “chin”), established by Qin Shi Huangdi, the First Emperor. Likewise, another name, “Cathay,” came from the famous traveler Marco Polo, who referred to northern China by such a name (and southern China as “Mangi”). Readers may know of the airline Cathay Pacific, and its Marco Polo Club, exclusive to “modern-day Marco Polos”— frequent flyers. Another name for China is “Zhongguo,” from the words Zhong (“center”) and Guo(“country”). Literally it could be interpreted as “the central country,” but a more apt translation would be “The Middle Kingdom.” For centuries, the people of China believed the land was at the very core of creation under heaven. The further you travel away from this center, the more barbarous and inhospitable the lands become. In a sense, they were correct. Outside their borders and their famed Great Wall lay the various steppe tribes—the Xionnu and Shan Yue raiders and the countless hordes of the Mongols and Oirats. “Zhongguo” was also used as the shortened version of “The People’s Republic of China.”

ARMENIA The Family Tree The small landlocked nation bordered by Turkey, Iran, and Georgia, has had a long-storied history with monotheistic religions. It is widely considered the first nation to have adopted Christianity as the official state religion in the year 301. Armenia, which is derived from the Old Persian language as “Armina,” has another name for itself: “Hayk,” after a descendant of Noah said to have settled in those lands near Mount Ararat. An even more complete interpretation would cite the country as “The Land of Noah’s GreatGreat-Grandson, Hayk.” In legend, Hayk left for a time to assist in building the Tower of Babel. Upon his return, his lands were encroached upon by a Babylonian king whom he killed in battle. Later on, the country’s name was changed to Hayastan (the Persian suffix “‑stan” means “land”). Another legend tells of Armenia being derived from “Aram” (“a great-great-grandson of Hayk’s great-greatgrandson”) who is considered by some locals the ancestor of all Armenians.

NAURU A Pleasant Welcome, A Summer Destination On November 8, 1798, a British captain by the name of John Fearn, sailing to China via New Zealand, landed on a remote island in the Pacific. The natives made quite an impression on him; Fearn wrote that “their behavior was very courteous, and they strongly invited us to anchor on their island.” So it was that the captain named this place as “Pleasant Island.” However, Nauru, the smallest republic in the entire world, also had an entirely different name derived from the local word Anaoero. In the native Nauruan dialect, quite significantly different from Oceanic languages, the term means an action—”I go to the beach.” It seems justified—Nauru was indeed a travel destination known for beautiful beaches. However, as time went on, the economy took a downward plunge. The country even entered into an agreement with Australia to build a detention center for offshore processing of asylum seekers.

ARGENTINA A Mountainous Wealth Of Legends The Spaniard Juan Diaz de Solis allegedly murdered his wife in Portugal. To escape the authorities, he fled back to his home country and took part in numerous voyages during the golden era of Spanish exploration. There, the explorer met with a cruel end close to present-day Buenos Aires. Cannibals hacked him and his entourage then ate them as the rest of the ships’ crews watched in utter shock. His brother-in-law, Francisco de Torres, took command of the expedition, which again met with unbelievably bad luck when he was shipwrecked. The natives in this new land were quite friendly—among the items they offered were glistening ornaments made with fine silver. Observations became legends. De Solis’s discovery became known as the silver river (“Rio de la Plata”). As centuries passed, explorers sought the fabled treasure to no avail. The name stuck, eventually becoming “the land of silver,” Tierra Argentina (“Argentina” is another word for “silver).

CHILE A Spicy Dispute Chile—derived from the Mapuche word “Chilli,” or “where the land ends.” Perhaps the native Mapuche walked westward from Argentina and found out that the continent ended at the Chilean shores overlooking the Pacific Ocean? Another possible origin is “cheele-cheele,” the Mapuche imitation of a bird call. Whatever the case, Spanish conquistadors heard of these tales from the Incas. Upon arriving back in Europe, they called themselves “The Men of Chilli.”

SPAIN A History Of Erroneous Names The Spaniards in South America. In 1499, Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda and a certain compatriot named Amerigo Vespucci saw natives living in houses on stilts along the coast and rivers. They named the land Venezuela—the “Little Venice.” The Spanish tradition of naming lands for erroneous or faulty observations goes back thousands of years. The ancient seafaring peoples of Phoenicia, forerunners of modern exploration, found lands far west of the Mediterranean some 3,000 years ago. These lands had a multitude of what they thought of as hyraxes (shrew mice), so they named it “I-shapan-im“—”Island of the Hyrax.” When the Romans came to rule much of the European continent they modified the name of this land to “Hispania.” However, the animals on the “Island of the Hyrax”/”Hispania” were not even rodents—they were actually rabbits. Thus, Spain, the empire of explorers who’ve handed down the names of cities and countries based on false legends or erroneous interpretations, was itself derived from faulty observation. MOLDOVA Man’s Best Friend The Roman prince Dragos had been hunting a wisent, or a wild bison, for many days. His companions, including several hunting dogs, chased the animal until they were spent. Disappointed that his quarry would escape, Dragos’s spirits were uplifted when his favorite dog Molda continued on with the hunt. Molda kept tracking the bison’s scent until man and man’s best friend cornered the wild animal near the banks of a river. A vicious fight ensued, and when it was over, the bison was dead, and so was Molda. Dragos was so saddened by the loss of his faithful companion that he named the surrounding lands after her. Some sources mention only the bison and the story of the hunt; others add the prince’s dog as part of the tale. Still, the legend of the hunt became symbolic for the country—even its flag contains the image of the bison.

CANADA Little Villages And Mostly Nothing At All When the French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed past the St. Lawrence River, his native guides remarked that this was the route to “Kanata“—a village. It was. But no native tribes called themselves the Kanata; it was simply what they called assorted villages as they migrated across the vast, snowy wilderness. Cartier probably misheard the term and called the land “Canada” instead. Another tale, albeit less popular, involves the Spaniards once more. The story tells of how the explorers were looking for fabled riches in the Americas. When they found none, they called the place “aca nada” or “ca nada” (meaning “nothing here“). When the French arrived years later, natives shouted “aca nada!” to tell them there was nothing of importance for the colonizers. The French, thinking it was the name of the country, ended up calling it “Canada.” Combining the two stories perhaps illustrates what modern-day Canada is like—villages (towns and cities), and a whole bunch of unpopulated wilderness in between. 282

PAKISTAN The Country, The Acronym “Pakistan,” in Urdu, means “Land of the Pure” (“Pak” means “pure” and “-stan,” of course, means “land”). Modern Pakistan formed on August 14, 1947, following the partitioning of India. However, the first use of the word “Pakistan” comes a decade earlier, from Choudhy Ramat Ali, a Muslim nationalist who advocated a separate Muslim state in the subcontinent. Ali published his “Now or Never” pamphlet on January 28, 1933 as an appeal to the British government, writing of how 30 million Muslims wished for independence. These citizens were from the following regions: Punjab, Afghan Province, Kashmir, Sind, and Baluchistan. Combining their letters gives the acronym “PAKSTAN.”

Czech Republic

Czech Republic

CZECHOSLOVAKIA The Hyphen War

feeling it diminished their importance. They wanted a hyphen added, as it would symbolize a connection.

A hilarious dispute arose after the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, ruled by the Communist regime for the last 30 years, had fallen in “The Velvet Revolution,” a bloodless coup. Local politicians set to work on what the new democracy should be called.

The new proposal calling the country the “Czecho-Slovak Republic” did not sit well with the Czechs, who hated it. Even Winston Churchill himself disliked its usage, saying that “one must regard the hyphen as a blemish to be avoided whenever possible.”

The first idea was to drop the word “Socialist.” The new nation would be known as the “Czechoslovak Republic,” which had been one of its older names. But Slovak politicians did not like the idea,

The citizens returned to the drawing board, with the Czechs and Slovacs now each using their own name. In Czech, the country was the “Czeskoslovenska federativni republika,” without a hyphen. In Slovak, it was “Czesko-slovenska

federativna republica,” with a hyphen. A month later, it was changed to “Czech and Slovak Federative Republic”—this, too, was not satisfactory. This Hyphen War only truly was settled on January 1, 1993. Facing conflicts on how to run the country, politicians just gave up and decided it would be in everyone’s best interest for the two nations to split up. Everyone was finally happy. Just as the area had peacefully become democratic due to the Velvet Revolution, this peaceful split became known as The Velvet Divorce, creating the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Singapore The Land of the Lion is Biting Back for Todays Bargain Hunters!

A

fter five years of price gains, the Singapore housing market seemed to have finally hit rock bottom, during the housing boom of 2013, prices soared to a record high of 40%, spurred on by low interest rates and demand from foreign buyers. As prices peaked, the government capped borrowers’ total debt repayments at 60% of their income, making it harder for Singaporeans to refinance loans, and placed additional taxes on home purchases by foreigners and levies on property sales. These measures cooled the market: Thus Singapore’s home prices fell 4% in 2014, the first year-on-year decline since 2008, and 12.6% for the 1Q of 2015 but with this year marking the 50th anniversary of Independence and an election year to boot could 2015 be the ideal time for savvy property investors who are willing to grab a bargain and sit on it while the markets balance themselves out?
