Buying & selling a car in Spain
B
uying or selling a used car in Spain can be a hazardous business, but if you take care to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is completed to cover yourself against liabilities, things should go smoothly.
Buying a car in Spain
When buying a car you’ll need to ensure sure you have at least one of the following (though, it’s best to have as many as possible with photocopies). • • • •
Permiso de Residencia or Residence Permit (NIE) or passport. Your escrituras, or house deeds, or a rental contract for a minimum of one year. Although it should not be required, it is a good idea to have a Certificado de Empadronamiento or proof of residence in your municipality, available free or for a few cents from the Town Hall. It should not be older than three months. Some car dealers insist on it, and if you don´t have it, everybody wastes time until the dealer checks his facts. If you are financing the car through a dealer you will also need to provide atres nóminas, your three last payslips, or some other proof of income, such as a copy of your work contract.
Buying a car from a private seller involves you and the seller entering into a joint legal relationship and handling all the paperwork yourselves. You and the seller must draw up a Contrato de compraventa (a purchase agreement), and make the transfer of ownership at the Registro de Vehículos (the vehicle registration desk) of the Jefatura de Tráfico (Traffic Department). You both fill in and sign the Solicitud de Transmisión de Vehículos (transfer document), and keep a copy. Make sure that the date and time of the transfer appears on the Contrato so that any traffic fines the seller has left unpaid are not passed on to you. If you are buying a car you must ask the seller for two further documents. The local car tax, impuesto sobre la circulación de vehiculos, should be fully paid up to date (ask to see the vendor’s passport or identity card to check their signature is genuine, and ask for a photocopy for your own security, in case anything goes wrong). The other document you should have is a transferencia. This is obtainable from Trafico and should be completed and signed. Help with all these papers can be given by a competent gestor or by the Real Automovil Club de España (RACE). Be careful to check the legal status of any car you buy. All cars over four years old must be inspected and must pass the inspeccion technical de vehiculos (ITV), equivalent to the MOT test.
If you buy a vehicle from a reputable car dealership, they usually handle all the paperwork on your behalf to complete the ownership transfer. However, they will look to you for payment of Trafico’s transfer tax and fee. The transfer will take a minimum of fifteen days. Trafico charges are approximately 40 Euros plus a tax amount that is 4% of the book value of the vehicle.
Paperwork for buying a car in Spain
Whether you decide to buy from a private seller or a dealer, similar paperwork is involved. You should ask to see the originals of all documents, particularly when dealing with a private seller. • The Permiso de Circulación or Log Book, which is the car´s ID. It shows proof that the chassis number (vehicle identification number) corresponds with the one on the vehicle´s registration document, and provides information on the car, such as the number plate, make, model, name and address of the owner and when it was first registered. • A Transferencia, or transfer of ownership form. • The Inspección Técnica (or ITV) document or MOT, stamped and dated on passing the last inspection and detailing when the next one is due. This proves that the car met the minimum environmental and road safety standards required by law. • The Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos or road license fee for the current financial year, paid in full.
Selling a car in Spain If you are selling a car, you must sign the section on the back of the permiso de circulación which begins ‘Transferido …’. To make sure no problems arise you should also write in the date of the sale. This obliges the new owner to complete the paperwork within 10 days. You can also notify the jefatura provincial de trafico of the sale, to cover yourself in case the buyer omits to change the name on the car’s papers. If the car is still in your name after the sale, the new owner could be running up fines for which you will be liable. You can check this: ask at the jefatura for the form called solicitud de datos del registro de vehiculos (request for vehicle registration details). This will tell you whether or not you are still the car’s registered owner. It is however a legal requirement for the buyer to transfer the vehicle into their name as soon as possible after its purchase.

ASTON MARTIN UNVEILS THE DB11 THE LATEST IN AN ILLUSTRIOUS BLOODLINE
Heralding a new design era for Aston Martin, DB11 is the latest landmark in a remarkable aesthetic journey; one that gave us icons such as the DB2/4, DB5 and, most recently, the DB10 developed specifically for James Bond. DB11 re-imagines the relationship between form and function with a series of fresh design signatures. Foremost amongst these are the front-hinging clamshell bonnet, distinctive LED headlights and accentuated lines of the iconic Aston Martin grille. The profile is equally dramatic, thanks to the roof strakes that flow uninterrupted from Apillar to C-pillar. The clean lines continue at the rear, with a sloping deck lid that smoothly blends into boldly sculpted tail-lights to create a new and unmistakable graphic. Innovative aerodynamics play their part in this aesthetic revolution with clever management of airflow both over and through the bodywork aiding stability while preserving the DB11’s uncluttered surfaces. Front-end lift is reduced by the gill-like Curlicue which releases high-pressure air from inside the wheel arch via a concealed vent within the redesigned side-strake. Meanwhile, rear-end lift is reduced by the Aston Martin AeroBladeTM; a virtual spoiler fed by discreet air intakes located at the base of each C-pillar. Air is ducted through the bodywork, before venting as a jet of air from the aperture in the rear deck lid. Like every Aston Martin, the heart of the DB11 is found beneath the bonnet, though unlike any Aston Martin before it, the DB11’s heart is a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12. Designed in-house this new engine develops 608PS1 (600BHP1) and 700Nm1 of torque, making DB11 the most powerful production DB model ever. Naturally, it’s the most dynamic and most accelerative too, with a top speed of 200mph1 and a 0-62mph time of just 3.9sec1. Thanks to intelligent bank activation and stop-start technology that potency is matched by greatly improved efficiency. To exploit the advantages of its new body structure and harness the immense performance of the new twin-turbo V12 engine, the DB11’s chassis, suspension, steering and electronics have been re-imagined and key new technologies embraced. Multiple driver-selectable dynamic modes - GT, Sport and Sport Plus - progressively intensify the response of the engine, 8-speed automatic ZF transmission together with the new electric power steering and Torque Vectoring by braking while increasing the firmness of

The Ehang 184 drone measures around 1.4 metres high, and features eight propellers held on four arms that can be folded into the vehicle’s body for storage. According to the manufacturer, which was founded in 2013, users would enter the one-seater Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) and input their final destination using a 12-inch touch screen located in front of the seat. The vehicle’s computer would then calculate the quickest and safest route and transport its passenger there. Ehang has called the vehicle the “safest, smartest and eco-friendly lowaltitude autonomous aerial vehicle
aiming on providing medium-short distance transportation solutions”. The company says the drone is designed so that even if one propeller fails, the vehicle will still be able to complete its flight. It also incorporates the “Ehangen fail safe system”, which means in the event of a malfunction the drone will immediately land in the nearest available area. There is no passenger override function, which means that anyone can travel in the drone without a pilot’s licence. However, this also means the user can’t take control in an emergency. The design was unveiled at the CES 2016 trade fair in Las Vegas this week. Ehang intends to start selling the drone later in 2016, with a reported price tag between £140,000 and £200,000.
