fraud trial resumes
T
HIS week Princess Cristina made Spanish history for all the wrong reason. On Tuesday she became the first Spanish royal to ever sit in the defendants dock as part of an alleged embezzlement scam which also includes her husband and 16 other defendants. If convicted she could face up to eight years in prison. It is alleged that Cristina, along with her husband used their non-profit company “The Noos Institute” a charitable institute to win over-inflated public contracts. The money was then siphoned off onto personal accounts held on offshore tax havens. The prosecution claim funds in the region of €6.2 million were embezzled and diverted from the public contracts.

The princess’s involvement in the case has been a constant source of embarrassment for King Felipe since he took over the throne last year who upon appointment to the throne stripped Cristina and her husband of their titles: Duchess and Duke of Palma. The princess has denied any knowledge and is scheduled to take the stand at the end of the month as the last defendant. The trial is due to run until the end of June.

KIERS at the Spanish ski resort of Formigal have been reassured by resort bosses there is no cause for alarm following reports of a Yeti on the loose. Phots of the supposed Yeti went viral on the internet after being posted to a popular website under the heading “Strange animal spotted in Formigal. What the hell is this?” The post went on to add “we’ve told the ski resort but they haven’t taken us seriously. I bet there’s something on the loose out there. I know what I saw.” However after the post sparked a frenzied debate over whether the mysterious creature was in fact a
Spanish yeti, a polar bear or man in mountain camouflage the resort owners, Aramon, were forced to conduct patrols of the area. A spokesman for the resort confirmed “We have spoken to the witnesses of the sighting to identify the area in which it took place and after combing the area we have found nothing. We believe therefore that there is no cause for alarm and that visitors’ security is guaranteed. In any case we will remain alert.” The Yeti, sometimes referred to the Abominable Snowman, is a tall ape-like creature, generally considered nothing more than a legend by the scientific community, said to inhabit the Himalayas.

LMOST half of euro zone countries are facing a clash over EU deficit reduction rules unless they change policies, European Commission forecasts showed, posing a challenge to EU laws that set limits on spending to protect the value of the euro. The rules, sharpened during the sovereign debt crisis that threatened the very existence of the single currency, are now under pressure because of the migration crisis, which is putting a new strain on public finances of several countries. Governments also argue that they need to spend more on security following the attacks in Paris in November and many say they need to use the public purse to stimulate domestic demand and investment to accelerate mediocre economic growth. Yet EU rules oblige governments to keep the headline deficit below 3 percent of gross domestic product and every year cut the structural gap, which excludes the effects of the business cycle and one-offs, until their books reach structural balance. If they fail to do so, they face a disciplinary procedure in which EU finance ministers set deficit reduction targets and deadlines for them. The process can end up in fines. To be able to react before it is too late, the Commission, which is the guardian of EU law, issues forecasts for the economies of the 28-nation EU three times a year, projecting key indicators such as growth, inflation, budget deficits and debt. The latest forecasts showed that the euro zone’s second biggest economy France, which has a deadline to cut its headline budget gap to 2.8 percent in 2017, will instead have a deficit of 3.2 percent next year, unless it takes action. The Commission has been calling on France to accelerate structural reforms to boost growth and cut spending, but that is politically difficult for Paris, which faces presidential elections next year. In structural terms, EU finance ministers asked France last year to reduce the deficit by 0.5 percent of GDP in 2015, but the Commission estimated the cut was only 0.2 percent. The forecasts said the reduction in the structural deficit in 2016 in France will be only 0.4 percent -- half of what EU ministers asked -- and the gap will actually rise 0.2 percent next year rather than fall by 0.9 percent as asked by the EU. Commenting on the forecasts, French Finance Minister Michel Sapin did not address the structural deficit cuts, but stressed that

Paris would deliver on its headline deficit obligations. “France will bring the deficit below 3 percent in 2017, as it promised,” Sapin said in a statement.
ECONOMIC CYCLE During the debt crisis, when many euro zone economies were hardly growing or in recession, the Commission emphasised the structural balance of government books, because it was not dependent on the economic cycle. Now that almost all euro zone countries have returned to growth, the EU executive arm has shifted focus back to the nominal

deficit, often easier to bring down without major structural reforms. Italy, while safely below 3 percent with its headline deficit, will see an increase in its structural gap to 1.7 percent of GDP this year from 1.0 percent in 2015. EU rules call for a minimum 0.5 percent reduction every year. Rome’s structural deficit is to ease only to 1.4 percent in 2017, again below the minimum required cut. Spain, still without a government after inconclusive elections in December, was asked to cut its headline deficit to 4.2 percent in 2015. But the Commission’s forecasts showed it missed that target recording a 4.8 percent gap. Madrid was asked to take the

deficit down to 2.8 percent this year, but unless policies change it will end up with a 3.6 percent shortfall, the Commission said. Structurally, Spain’s deficit has been rising since 2014 rather than falling. Spain’s acting economy minister, Luis de Guindos, said it was too early to assess whether the 2015 goal would be missed, adding that the main uncertainty was the country’s autonomous regions, which have overspent in recent years. Portugal, where a socialist government has taken over last November, is also in trouble, because it was supposed to cut its headline deficit to 2.5 percent already last year, but instead ended up with a 4.2 percent gap. Without policy changes, it will not bring its deficit below 3 percent this year either and its structural deficit is also rising sharply, rather than falling as it should. Lisbon is negotiating changes to the 2016 budget with the Commission to avoid having the draft formally sent back for re-working. But not only southern European countries have problems sticking to structural deficit reduction rules. The Commission expects Austria, which cut the structural gap to 0.3 percent last year, to increase it to 1.0 percent this year. Lithuania’s structural deficit is to rise to 1.5 percent this year from 1.1 last year, the Netherlands is to see an increase to 1.7 percent from 1.2 percent while Finland is expected to keep its structural shortfall flat at 1.8 percent.

Cameron upbeat but poll shows Britons tilting towards leaving EU A MAJORITY of Britons who have made up their minds would vote to leave the European Union in a forthcoming referendum, making Britain by far the most reluctant member of the 28-nation bloc, an opinion poll published last week showed. As Prime Minister David Cameron pushed for a deal from other EU leaders to improve London’s membership terms before a vote he could call as early as June, the ORB poll indicated that opposition to the European Union was growing in Britain. While 21 percent of voters are still undecided, 43 percent want to leave the EU and 36 percent want to stay, the survey showed. When the undecided are stripped out, 54 percent of voters want a British exit, or ‘Brexit’, up from 51 percent a year ago, and 46 percent want to stay, down from 49 percent. The public scepticism contrasted with Cameron’s latest declaration of optimism that a deal can be struck on his demands for changes in Britain’s relationship with Brussels, including reducing benefit rights for EU migrants working in the UK. “We believe that all these issues can be dealt with. The discussions are going well,” Cameron said in Wildbad Kreuth, Bavaria, after what he said was an “excellent meeting” with German Chancellor Angela Merkel over dinner on Wednesday. The ORB poll indicates that the referendum could be far closer than some politicians had assumed and that the result will depend on a fifth of voters who are still undecided. “Despite the impending vote on Brexit, significantly more people report
to have felt further removed from Europe over the last twelve months than closer to it,” Johnny Heald, managing director of ORB International, said “If the Prime Minister is to avoid disaster on his watch someone needs to start convincing the public very soon on why we should remain a part of the EU.” A British exit would shake the Union to its core, ripping away its second largest economy and one of its top two military powers. Pro-Europeans warn an exit from the EU would hurt Britain’s economy and could trigger the break-up of the United Kingdom by prompting another Scottish independence vote. Opponents of EU membership say Britain would prosper outside the bloc.
“REASONABLE DEAL” Cameron, who is urging fellow leaders to clinch an agreement at an EU summit on Feb. 18-19, dined with Merkel and her conservative Bavarian allies last week, before dining Merkel said “Throughout these next weeks, it is especially important that we make decisions in our own interest in order to achieve a reasonable package that will allow Great Britain to remain a part of the European Union.” In a speech to German lawmakers last month, she called Britain a “natural ally”, stressing its importance to Europe’s internal free market and its weight in foreign policy debates. She also said she was “confident” a solution would be found. REUTERS

Can the Schengen free zone survive?
EU security chiefs brace for more Islamist attacks ISLAMIC State and other militants are very likely to attempt big new attacks in Europe following those in Paris, the EU’s police agency has warned. The assessment based on discussions concluded eight weeks ago by security agencies from EU states further attacks could even take place quite soon. The events in Paris “appear to indicate a shift towards a broader strategy of IS going global, of them specifically attacking France, but also the possibility of attacks against other member states of the EU in the near future”, it said. There was “every reason to expect” an attack, by Islamic State or “IS-inspired terrorists or another religiously inspired terrorist group”. “This is in addition to the threat of lone actor attacks, which has not diminished,” it said. At a news conference to mark the launch of a new European Counter Terrorism Centre within Europol, based in The Hague, its director Rob Wainwright said Islamic State “has the willingness and capability to carry out further attacks in Europe”. The Europol report said Islamic State may have established an “external action command trained for special forces-style attacks in the international environment” and noted that, as the Paris attacks showed, the group was largely active in Europe through radicalised European citizens, not foreigners. The report also warned of a risk of cyber-attacks but said there was no evidence of Islamist militants trying to use chemical, biological or nuclear material as a weapon in Europe. Currently, some 30 Europol experts are working to investigate into the Paris attack, helping track movements of money, weapons, fake documents and other elements of the plot.
European Union ministers are to discuss whether to further extend emergency border controls within the Schengen free-travel zone, which is cracking as a wave of migrants arrive from the Middle East, Africa and beyond
M
ORE than one million people arrived in Europe last year and the numbers show little sign of falling, presenting a major challenge for EU countries that is shaking the foundations of the 28-nation bloc. While officials in Brussels and Berlin have warned that time is running out to tackle the migration issue or risk the Schengen area falling apart, EU governments have largely failed to deliver on measures they agreed to alleviate the crisis. Unable to stem the flows, six Schengen members, including Germany and four other EU countries, have resorted to reinstating temporary border checks in the passportfree area which will stay in place until May, but with the migration crisis showing no signs of abating, EU interior ministers must debate what will happen afterwards.
SERIOUS DEFICIENCIES Under the Schengen code temporary border checks may be extended for a total period of up to two years. For this to happen, EU leaders have to agree that “persistent serious deficiencies” in controls at Schengen’s external borders put its very existence at risk. “We have not yet launched this mechanism ... (but) this possibility exists, it is there and the Commission is prepared to use it if need be,” a spokeswoman for the EU’s executive said of the potential extension. For the extension to happen, the Commission would have to recommend it and the

European Council, which brings together 28 EU leaders, approve it by a qualified majority. “We’re not currently in that situation. But interior ministers will on Monday in Amsterdam have the opportunity to discuss... and it’s on the agenda what steps should be taken or will need to be taken once we near the end of the maximum period in May,” the spokeswoman told a regular news briefing. The countries that now have temporary border controls in place are Germany, the top destination for refugees and migrants arriving in Europe, Sweden, Austria, France, Denmark and Norway, which is not in the EU but is in Schengen. EU border agency Frontex said on Friday some 108,000 migrants arrived in December in Greece, the key point of entry for irregular migrants. That compares to 150,000 arrivals in November and puts the total for Greece and Italy at 1.04 million in 2015, or five times as many as in 2014, Frontex said. The agency added there were 1.83 million illegal border crossings at EU’s external borders in 2015, compared to the previous year’s record of some 238,500. The actual number of people is lower as some are counted twice.
EU BORDER GUARD Insufficient control of Europe’s external borders is a major issue in solving the crisis. Given how southern countries -- the main gateway to Europe -- are struggling with the arrivals, the European Commission wants to improve controls by revamping Frontex into a bloc-wide border and coast guard with the right to intervene if necessary. That is proving a controversial proposal, however, with some countries arguing it would undermine their sovereignty -- another point on the Amsterdam agenda. The ministers will also discuss whether the proposed European Border and Coast Guard should “share responsibility” for external border management with member states, who would have to assign some of their border guards and equipment to it. EU leaders are expected to formally agree on the creation of such an agency in the summer and another issue is whether it would have the authority to come up with binding assessments of any shortcomings in border management by member states. The Schengen area currently comprises 26 states, 22 of which are also EU members. Four newer EU states - Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania - are obliged to join eventually, while Britain and Ireland have opt-outs.

“EU border closures would cost three billion euros a year” says Juncker Adding border checks to Europe’s passport-free area would cost 3 billion euros (2.31 billion pounds) a year in lost business, the bloc’s chief executive has warned
W
ITH some 1.7 million workers crossing EU internal borders every day and with 57 million journeys made across those frontiers every year, European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker said every hour of waiting time at borders had a cost. “One after another, we close the borders and once they are all closed we will see that the economic cost is huge,” Juncker told the European Parliament in Strasbourg. “If we close the borders, if the internal market begins to suffer ... then one day we will be wondering whether or not we really need a common currency if there is no single market, no free movement of workers anymore,” he said, warning of the threat to the euro.
CAVALIER ATTITUDE Juncker, whose EU executive is working on revising the bloc’s asylum and migration policy, said he decided to stress the economic impact because of EU governments’ “cavalier” attitude to the Schengen zone of passport-free travel. Though 3 billion euros is a relatively modest amount in terms of annual trade in goods among the 28 EU member states that is worth some 2,800 billion euros, Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have both linked the future of EU’s single currency to border closures in recent weeks. In an apparent shock tactic to combat strong nationalistic reactions to migration, Juncker warned during his first news conference of 2016 that citizens would find it harder to find
jobs and said that the euro “made no sense” in a Europe where people could no longer move freely. Merkel has called Europe “vulnerable” and that the fate of the euro is “directly linked” to resolving the migration crisis. Juncker cited the European Commission’s own data of the 3 billion euro annual cost, also saying that according to independent estimates, the closure of the bridge between Denmark and Sweden could cost 300 million euros a year in lost business. Several national governments have used emergency powers under the Schengen treaty to reinstate border checks with EU neighbours in response to chaotic treks by about 1 million people seeking asylum last year, most of whom landed in Greece. Those movements have made a-nonsense of EU rules, known as the Dublin system, under which people must claim asylum and be accommodated in the first EU state they enter. In effect, most of last year’s arrivals ended up in Germany. Since last year, the Commission has been working on reforms to be proposed by March to spread responsibility more evenly, rather than leave Greece and Italy with the notional legal obligation to accommodate nearly every asylum seeker in Europe. One idea, favoured by Germany but which faces fierce resistance from many member states not yet affected by the crisis, is to relocate people around the bloc according to a quota system based on population and national wealth.

DRAMATIC MOMENT AS BUS BURSTS INTO FLAMES
T
ERRIFIED Londoners thought they were once again the victims of a terror attack when a double decker bus exploded just yards from MI5’s headquarters in central London on Sunday. Thankfully the explosion was part of a movie stunt for a new Jackie Chan action movie “The Foreigner” however the realistic blast echoed chilling similarities to those of the bus bombing on July 7th 2005 when four suicide bombers, Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, Hasib Hussain and Germaine Lindsay, detonated four bombs across London in an attack designed to bring London to its knees – The attack killed 52 people. The blast which occurred on Lambeth Bridge sent flames 100ft into the air ripping the roof of the number 211 bus bringing it to a standstill. The film, slated for release later this year, is directed by Martin Campbell, who was behind James Bond films Casino Royale and GoldenEye. Featuring Pierce Brosnan the film concerns a man whose daughter is killed in a terrorist attack and so he targets the terrorists for revenge.

AS reported last year in issue 6 of the Weekend World a young teenager from Germany who discovered a gold bar while swimming in the Königssee (King Lake) has been notified by authorities that she can now keep the sunken treasure. Police in Berchtesgaden claim that despite attempts to find an owner for the bar no one has forward to claim it, it was noted that at the time of its discovery the bar, weighing in at 498 grams (or about 17.6 ounces), had its serial number scratched off resulting in the-
ories that it could be “Nazi gold” or buried loot from a robbery. Authorities deny that the gold bullion has any association with the Third Reich but have been unable to find any concrete evidence of origin or ownership. Under German law, the owner of lost property has six months to come forward and claim it from the date it is handed in - otherwise the finder gets to keep it as no claim has been made the lucky young girl, from Essen who hasn’t been identified, now gets to take the €16,000 bar home.

SPANISH campaigners have dug up a mass grave in a search for victims of the country’s civil war and the fascist dictatorship it put in place, as an Argentine court puts pressure on Spain to confront its troubled past
Argentine court triggers search for Franco-era victims in Spain
T
HE exhumation, which lasted several days, is the first agreed to by a Spanish court at the behest of the Argentine investigators. Hundreds of Spaniards turned to the Argentine court two years ago for help in uncovering crimes committed during the 1936-1939 civil wars and the subsequent 36-year dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, by using an international human rights law. On the edge of a cemetery in Guadalajara, some 50 km from Madrid, volunteers dug open a grave believed to hold 22 or 23 bodies after a campaign by 90-year-old Ascension Mendieta, who is seeking her father’s remains. “I’m overwhelmed by all this, but I know we’re going to get there and get what we wanted. After this I can die in peace.” Her father Timoteo, who fought against Franco’s forces, is believed to have been shot amid reprisals after the war ended. Hundreds of thousands of people died during the conflict, with atrocities committed on both sides. The victors under Franco went on to execute thousands of people after the war, according to British historian Paul Preston’s book “The Spanish Holocaust”.
CRIMES Forty years after Franco’s death, the Argentine-led investigation into possible crimes against humanity during his rule could revive a movement to confront Spain’s past, which gained prominence after the Socialists came to power in 2004. A historical memory association, which helped with the dig in Guadalajara, has carried out several exhumations in recent years at the request of families. But building legal cases in Spain has been impossible. The country passed an amnesty law in 1977 which pardoned the crimes of the Franco government. Campaigners hope the latest exhumation could open the door to more under the court’s investigation, said Ana Messuti, a lawyer working with the relatives of Spanish victims in the Argentine case.
So far, the investigation has met with mixed success, after a Spanish court last year rejected an Argentine judge’s request to arrest and extradites 20 former Spanish officials. For Spaniards born since the country’s return to democracy after Franco’s death, the civil war divisions and stories still resonate, even as many turn to new political alternatives that represent a break with transitionera forces. Elena Garcia, Mendieta’s 21-year-old granddaughter, called on authorities to do more to locate and deal with mass graves, arguing such efforts were long overdue. Many say they simply want to give their relatives proper burials, even decades later. For others, the push for exhumations is an unwelcome way of reviving old wounds. “The political class should learn from everything my grandmother has suffered, from the fight she has had to go through,” said Garcia, who also watched the dig. “This can’t stay this way, and there are so many people to find yet.”

“Abandon centrists or you’re on your own”, Spain’s Podemos tells Socialists
S
PAIN’S anti-austerity Podemos party said it would only start negotiations to form a government with the Socialists and end months of political deadlock if leader Pedro Sanchez (pictured) abandoned talks with the centrist Ciudadanos. The stance, taken by Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias, threw up a road block to Sanchez’ attempts to win support for a viable coalition, only days after he was formally nominated to try to replace the centre-right People’s Party (PP). It also supposes further delays in what has already been a drawn-out process that risks eventually weighing on the country’s economic recovery. Spain was plunged into political uncertainty after an inconclusive election in December in which no party won a majority of seats. Newer parties, particularly Podemos and Ciudadanos, grabbed votes from mainstream rivals. Iglesias said if Sanchez wanted a pact with Podemos he would have to stop talks with Ciudadanos,
who came fourth in the December general election and whose leader Albert Rivera, who he sees as cut from the same cloth as the old ruling party. “An agreement with Ciudadanos would be an indirect agreement with the PP,” he told a news conference. “We are not going to help support a right-wing government. Our negotiating team will be ready as soon as the Socialists opt for a government of progress,” he added. The Socialist leader, who has said he needs at least a month before seeking a confidence vote in parliament, added he would maintain talks with all other leaders. The failure to reach a coalition so far raises the prospect of fresh elections later this year. A recent survey shows Podemos would replace the Socialists as the second-placed party if another ballot were held. If Sanchez loses the confidence vote, other potential candidates would have two more months to form an alternative majority before a new national election would have to be called.

Pregnant women carrying the Zika Virus confirmed in Spain
Kidnap attempt foiled A MAN of 47 years has been remanded in custody for allegedly attempting to kidnap a child of three years during the Carnival parade on Saturday in Málaga. The child who was attending the festivities with his mother suddenly disappeared. Whilst searching for the young boy a friend of the mother saw a man, who was dressed as an FBI agent holding the small child in his arms and with the help of the mother they took the child. The individual managed to escape however went on to claim that he had been assaulted reporting the mother and her accomplice to a passing patrol car. After speaking with several witnesses the local police soon discovered that the man had in fact tried to apprehend the child against his will and arrested him for attempted kidnapping.
HEALTH minister Alfonso Alonso has confirmed the presence of the Zika virus in pregnant women here in Spain. The mosquito-borne virus has so far been discovered in more than seven women since late 2015. News of the virus, thought to cause birth defects, first emerged in Brazil last year and health authorities have warned the disease could infect up to 4 million people worldwide. The virus which starts with a mosquito bite and normally causes little more than a fever and rash has since October reportedly been linked with microcephaly, where a baby’s head is abnormally small. Figures released show that from 2014 there has been an increase from 147 to 3,670 suspected cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the microcephaly condition, linked to the mosquito-borne virus, a global public health emergency.

Spanish officials have warned that pregnant women planning to travel to affected areas such as areas in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands should first consult a doctor.
No risk of spreading Alfonso Alonso released a statement saying that the most recent case of a pregnant woman was diagnosed in the north-eastern

TWO puppeteers have been charged with “glorifying terrorism” during a children’s show as part of the Madrid Carnival celebrations. Puppeteers Alfonso Lazaro de la Fuente and Raul Garcia Perez who worked for the “puppets from below” company staged a show which featured the hanging of an effigy of a judge, the stabbing of a nun with a crucifix and several police beatings. It has also been reported that the puppets allegedly held up signs quoting “Up with ETA,” a refer-
ence to the banned Basque separatist group in northern Spain and southwestern France who over the four decades have claimed to have killed 829 people and wounded thousands. New Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena issued a statement saying the infants’ show was “an offensive act” for depicting inappropriate ideologies praising terrorism he said. “The local police arrested those responsible and called in the national police, following normal procedure in these cases.”

The feud, it seems, stems from the murder last year of 34-year-old Gary Hutch, the nephew of Eddie Hutch, who was gunned down at an apartment complex in Angel de Miraflores. A convicted armed robber and drug dealer, Hutch had apparently fallen out with the Spanish-based Kinahan family. Following his murder his uncle vowed to take revenge - a revenge which last week seems to have been set in motion with some fearing it could escalate further into a bloody war.

POLITICS & THE PRINCESS’S TRIAL RESULT IN TESTING TIMES FOR KING FELIPE S YMPATHY for the Spanish monarchy is in short supply Felipe, 48, who took over the throne in June 2014 after his father abdicated following a series of embarrassing
episodes has found himself facing his biggest test yet after the most fractured election result in decades has left Spain without a clear government and thrust him into the role of broker between political parties. At the same time, his sister Princess Cristina is standing trial on fraud charges, the first time a Spanish royal has been put before a criminal court. The new king’s attempts to draw a line under the family scandals and modernize the monarchy have restored some of its popularity. A poll in June 2015 showed a record 61.5 percent approved of the parliamentary monarchy system, more than at the height of Juan Carlos’ popularity. Felipe has also managed to build up the type of personal following his father once enjoyed, with approval ratings of nearly 75 percent. Juan Carlos was at one time revered, largely for his role in smoothing Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy and in particular in foiling a coup attempt on Feb. 23, 1981, when heavily-armed civil guards took over the parliament. But a series of gaffes in recent years, including a luxury elephant-hunting trip to Botswana in 2012 at a time of severe economic hardship for many Spaniards, eroded a huge amount of support for the royals. Now Spain’s greatest period of political upheaval since the transition in the 1970s has set the stage for Felipe’s own chance to define the monarchy for years to come.
RISKS FOR ROYALS The splintered result of the December election, when the ruling People’s Party won most parliamentary seats but fell far short of a majority, have marked a rejection of the old guard that has largely governed Spain in those four decades. Like other monarchs in Europe, Felipe holds no real power to make political decisions although he does give the green light to negotiations between parties in a country with little tradition of coalitions. Any sign he is overstepping the mark would be risky. (In Britain, heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles has faced criticism over his perceived meddling in policy issues). Felipe’s closed-door contacts with parties - including two new parties, the anti-austerity Podemos and centrist Ciudadanos - received an unusual degree of scrutiny when leaders gave their versions of the meetings in televised news conferences. And while the king has now asked the second-placed Socialists to try to form a coalition, the chances of this option failing are high, which could lead to another election. Still, the wrangling over a government in Spain could work to Felipe’s advantage, said Javier Tajadura, a professor of constitutional law at the University of the Basque Country. The king had emerged as a dignified figure as parties squabble, Tajadura said. “He’s been very prudent, and followed the steps he needed to take with a scrupulous neutrality,” he said.
TRULY SCANDALOUS The coalition talks are not the only political problem facing Felipe. An independence push in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, which is governed by pro-secession parties, is

Shadow employment - the dark-side of the workplace

putting the head of state in another bind. But Princess Cristina’s trial, which resumed in Mallorca this week, is potentially the most toxic subject of all. The princess, who is charged with two counts of being an accessory to tax fraud in a case centred on her husband Inaki Urdangarin’s business dealings, faces weeks of court appearances. She denies any wrongdoing. Even some convinced monarchists believe Cristina should give up her right to the throne, for which she is
seventh in line. Sensitive to a growing intolerance for corruption - which largely fuelled the political upset - and to accusations the monarchy was out of touch, Felipe has struck a more austere tone. His coronation ceremony was pared back and he has opened up the palace accounts to closer scrutiny. Spain has had brief incarnations as a republic, including in the run-up to the 1936-39 civil war, and has long had a vocal anti-monarchist movement.

THE ongoing economic crisis has seen an increase in the number of jobs created in the shadow market as a growing number of people are forced to work without a contract or accept part-time work contracts when in fact they are expected to work full time hours. These are the findings of the labour inspectors who throughout 2015 recorded 3,354 unregistered jobs or inadequate contracts a 14% increase on the previous year. In 80% of cases companies had fraudulently registered workers with a part-time contract without declaring the correct hours, the hospitality sector being the most prevalent followed by the building and construction sector. Spot inspections resulted in more than 2,500 fines imposed on companies for a total amount of 11.9 million euros, which represented an increase of 3% on the previous year and 330 cases of employees working and receiving unemployment benefits. Spain has one of the most aggressive labour laws and boosts high social security rates which many companies especially new start -ups argue makes it impossible for them to work within the proper remits of the law. Given these high levels of fraud, there is only one Spanish tax inspector for every 1,928 taxpayers, compared with 860 in France and 729 in Germany.

Greece is 26th European country to recognize same-sex partnerships
G
REEK parliamentarians have approved a new civil partnership bill which will legally recognise same-sex couples for the first time. The concept of registered partnership has existed in Greece since 2009 but was only available to heterosexual partners; this was declared discriminatory by the European Court of Human Rights. As a result a parliamentary vote was undertaken. Of the 249 present, 194 voted for and 55 voted against this law meaning, same-sex couples will now benefit from various rights and protections that were previously only enjoyed by married couples. These protections include inheritance but the new law does not include the ability to apply for joint adoption. The bill also extends greater anti-discrim-
ination protection on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. The legislation - similar to laws in Britain, Spain and Cyprus stops short of allowing state-sanctioned marriages. It also does not permit such couples to adopt children, and it denies them pension and tax benefits available to heterosexual couples. Conservative bishops in Greece’s powerful Orthodox Church vehemently opposed the law, arguing that it undermined the institution of family. Metropolitan Bishop Ambrosios of Kalavryta, who earlier this year voiced public support for the country’s far-right political party Golden Dawn, encouraged followers to “spit” on and “blacken” gays and atheists with violence.
EU SMUGGLERS MAKE BILLIONS AS THE WORLD IS ENGULFED BY CONFLICTS M
ORE than 1 million refugees and migrants came to the European Union last year, while almost 3,700 died or went missing undertaking the perilous journeys it is the international smugglers who are rubbing their hands with glee reaping huge profit in people trafficking, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. William Lacy Swing (below)ww, IOM chief said that during 2015 there were three to four times as many migrants entering EU with the death toll far exceeding that of 2014. In a joint statement released by the IOM and the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR it is thought that almost all those arriving came across the Mediterranean or the Aegean Seas, and half were Syrians fleeing the war. Another 20 percent were Afghans, and 7 percent were Iraqis. Of these numbers people smuggling probably accounted for the majority with migrants being charged anything from $2,000 to maybe $6,000 depending on how many members of the family they intended to travel with.
IOM estimates people smugglers in Europe have made $10 billion or more since 2000, maybe much more. “They are certainly getting very well paid for their services,” Swing said. Out of a total of 1,005,504 arrivals to Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Malta and Cyprus by Dec. 21, the vast majority -- 816,752 -- arrived by sea in Greece, IOM said. This record movement of people into Europe is a symptom of a record level of disruption around the globe, whilst Syria attracts all the media attention it is only one event among many causes, including Ebola and Boko Haram in West Africa, an earthquake in Nepal, conflicts in Libya, Yemen, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Afghanistan and Iraq. U.N. refugee Chief Antonio Guterres has called for a “massive resettlement” of Syrian and other refugees within Europe, to distribute many hundreds of thousands of people before the continent’s asylum system crumbles.

GERMAN GOVERNMENT Chinese gay TRIES TO LIMIT man sues for right to marry BENEFITS FOR FOREIGNERS FROM EU
I
N what can only be classed as a boost to David Cameron’s campaign to secure EU welfare reform, ministers from Angela Merkel’s government confirm they are looking at ways to change its law so they can STOP migrants from other EU countries claiming benefits in Germany. Germany should limit the social benefits foreigners from within the European Union are entitled to receive, said German Labour Minister Andrea Nahles. “There is clearly a need for legislative action. We need to spare the municipalities from having to provide for penniless foreigners from the EU in an unlimited way,” Andrea Nahles told the regional newspaper Rheinische Post. The minister’s intervention comes after local authorities across Germany warned they could not afford the cost of paying benefits to EU migrants under the existing rules.
ENTITLEMENT Towns, municipalities and districts have to pay for social benefits in Germany. With a single German social welfare recipient who lives alone entitled to around 400 euros per month. Germany’s Federal Social Court ruled in early December that foreigners from the EU were entitled to social welfare benefits after living in the country for six months. Nahles said it was necessary to wait for the court to provide
the reasons for that judgement and only after that could work start on a law to limit benefit payments to foreigners from the EU. European Union states can restrict benefits to people from other EU countries unless they have worked for at least a year in their host nation, the EU’s top court said in September. Germany recently sigGerman Labour Minister Andrea Nahles nalled that it would back Britain in its bid to secure reforms in EU rules and procedures. Among the reforms Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking are changes in rules on social welfare, which would make EU migrant workers wait four years before claiming some benefits in Britain.
A COURT has accepted China’s first same-sex marriage case, lodged by a gay man against a civil affairs bureau for denying him the right to marry, in a decision hailed as a step forward for gay rights. While homosexuality is not illegal in China, and large cities have thriving gay scenes, same-sex marriage is not legal and same-sex couples have no legal protections. China is becoming more tolerant of homosexuality, which until 2001 was listed as a mental disorder, but many gay people still remain under heavy pressure to stay in the closet. Following the courts acceptance of the hearing activists believe the floodgates will no open with more such cases. “In China, courts often reject politically sensitive cases, so the fact that the lawsuit is accepted signals some official willingness to address discrimination against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people, which is encouraging,” said Maya Wang, a China researcher at New York-based group Human Rights Watch. “But we will need to see if they actually win the case. If they do, it’d be a truly watershed moment for LGBT rights in China.” A ruling in the case is expected within six months.

Facebook users solve mystery of ‘ancient’ Jewish relic
D
ISCOVERED in an ancient building in a cemetery in Jerusalem by a groundskeeper who initially feared it was an explosive device, the 8kg solid gold coloured object was handed to Israel’s Antiquities Authority who have for the last 6months tried to identify the object. Unable to decipher the origin of the object the Antiquities Authority turned to the web and the wisdom of crowds for assistance pasting a request on its Facebook page for suggestions. Within hours online users managed to provide an answer confirming that the object was in fact a “diffuser of positive energies” which can be purchased from German firm Weber Bio. The ‘Weber-Isis-Beamer’ named after Isis, the Egyptian goddess of medicine, magic and nature claims to provide “Universal energetic protection around the clock” Israel’s Antiquities Authority, identified Micah Barak from Italy as the person to first to crack the mystery, and invited him to visit Jerusalem to see it in person. The question still remains as to why the ob-

Clean air comes at a price! OFFICIALS in a Chinese city have ordered a restaurant to stop charging customers to breathe clean air amid intense smog in the country. The restaurant in Zhangjiagang was found to be adding an “air cleaning fee” of about $0.15 to each customer’s bill to offset the cost of the restaurants new air filtration system, which was installed following the high levels of smog in the region. The “air cleaning fee” was brought to official’s attention following complaints from customers to the city’s Consumer Pricing Bureau, who ordered the restaurant to cease the practice. Officials stated filtered air could not be sold as a commodity because diners have to breathe.

PM pledges support to Lisa’s family
A
S the family of missing local woman, Lisa Brown (pictured), continue to push for answers into her disappearance, the Prime Minister David Cameron, has pledged his support during last week’s Prime Ministers Questions in the House of Commons. The families local MP Martin Docherty of West Dunbartonshire raised the issue saying, “the Prime Minister may be aware of the case of my constituent Lisa Brown whose family were notified by the Spanish police authorities on November 10, 2015 she was a missing person, though could have been missing since November 6.” “Lisa’s mother Catherine, sister Helen and brother Craig have visited Spain several times since and have met with Spanish authorities and with UK consular staff.”
“While the Spanish authorities say they are actively working on this case there have been various pieces of misinformation in the Spanish media which we know not to have been helpful.” “Can I call upon the Prime Minister to seek assurances on behalf of Lisa’s family from the Spanish authorities here in London and in Madrid, as well as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, that everything possible is being done to ensure Lisa’s family can get the answers they so desperately need?” The Prime Minister responded: “I will certainly look into this case and make sure after the honourable gentleman has raised it so clearly that the European Minister meets with him to make sure everything is done for Lisa’s family that is possible.”

FOCUS ON GIBRALTAR
GIBRALTAR PORT IN BUOYANT MOOD
HM GOVERNMENT of Gibraltar is pleased to announce positive trends in shipping activity at the port as it reviews its performance for 2015. Despite the direct and residual effects of the recent economic crisis on shipping worldwide, and increasing competition in the region, the Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) reports growth in both the total number of ships calling at Gibraltar for bunkers, and in the quantity of fuel delivered.
time when neighbouring ports are reporting a slowdown in activity. The Port’s robust performance is testament to the outstanding work of the GPA in its efforts to further improve efficiency and in aggressively marketing the port. It is also down to the enduring commitment of the bunker suppliers, shipping agents and other operators at the Port of Gibraltar for which I wish to express my sincere gratitude and support.’
UPWARD TREND
TREND
This upward trend is reflected more widely with an increase in the number of both cruise ships, which have increased by over 13%, and superyachts calling at Gibraltar which have increased by some 60% during this period. The GPA is hopeful that superyachts will increase their stays in Gibraltar once the berthing on the external part of the new marina becomes available for use. Minister for Shipping, the Hon Albert Isola added, ‘I am delighted to see such a pivotal contributor to Gibraltar’s economy grow from strength to strength, particularly at a
CEO and Captain of the Port Bob Sanguinetti commented, ‘Whilst early days, this trend reinforces Gibraltar’s position as the Mediterranean’s leading bunker port and its resilience as a centre of maritime excellence. I look forward to continuing to work in increasing our range and quality of services together with the team at the GPA and, of course, our private sector partners.’ In April, the GPA will continue its push to promote the Jurisdiction in a joint Financial Services/Port Marketing visit to Singapore and Hong Kong, headed by Minister Isola together with representatives from the private sector.
Gibraltar to become a Model “Green City” THE Government of Gibraltar says it ‘was pleased to welcome a delegation from China that is eager to make Gibraltar a model “Green City” for Europe and the World.’ The visiting delegation from Good Resources Holding Ltd, specialise
in advanced LED lighting technologies and work as part of a larger Chinese consortium, led by Go Scale Capital, who source and develop the very best clean technologies in the world and scale them in key markets. The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo QC, said: “Gibraltar strives to be a leader in clean energy efforts, and our partnership with our Chinese investors will help showcase to the world that we can and must use all means possible to do the right thing for our people and our planet.”

According to tradition, the Flour Festival originates from the young men who, in order to show their interest in a young woman, chased after her and threw flour over her. Any way of achieving their aim was valid: from scaling a fence to climbing down a chimney, if a girl then covered the boy in flour too, “a love had been born”. n Juego del cántaro (Water pitcher game) 28 February, Montejaque, Ronda Coinciding with Andalusia Day, Montejaque, located in the Ronda mountain range, celebrates a unique festival known as the “Juego del cántaro” (Water pitcher game). Participation in this activity is in teams. Team members have to throw a clay pitcher a certain distance through the air. As groups are eliminated - once the pitcher has fallen to the ground and smashed to smithereens - the distance that the members of each team have to throw the pitcher is increased. The games take place from midday to 6pm in the towns main square and are great to watch.

CARNIVAL TIME!! O F all the Spanish fiestas that take place throughout the year there is nothing wilder than the carnival’s celebrated nationwide in the weeks leading up to Lent with the most raucous carnival’s (Carnaval in Spanish) being those celebrated in the Canary Islands, Cadiz and Sitges. Around the world carnivals are celebrated over just one or two days the most famous being Rio and Notting Hill, however here in Spain the carnival is actually a month or more of celebratory activities and events that begin during the month of January. When talking about carnivals most people will be talking about the main parade, however here in Spain each town has its own unique flavour of celebration but they are all about having a good time. With the drinking and dancing going from dusk until dawn, expect to see extravagant costumes and people in masks everywhere and you’ll have a lot more fun participating in the masquerading than by just watching. There are a few speculations on the origins of Carnival in Spain. Most popularly it is believed the term Carnival derives from the words “farewell to the flesh,” a reference to the excesses that led up to the sombre Lent. Some suspect Carnival is derived from the Roman solstice festival, the Saturnalia, where participants indulged in much drinking and dancing. Saturnalia is believed to have had the first parade floats, called the ‘carrus navalis’. Carnival was actually banned in Spain in 1938 during the reign of the dictator Franco and was only re-introduced in 1981 with the re-establishment of democracy.
Malaga Carnival
One of the most eagerly-awaited events of the city of Málaga has finally come to an end. The Carnival which began on 14 January, saw the city of Malaga enjoy an intense and emotional month of fancy dress and music. The opening address was delivered this year by Pepito Molina, under the title Verdiales, el carnaval pagano (Verdiales, the pagan carnival). In his speech he spoke about the relationship between the Verdial (a kind of traditional music and dance) and the Carnival. There was performance of the carnival coplas (popular songs) that the verdial groups used to sing during Malaga’s Winter Festival. Led by the Fundación Ciudadana del Carnival (Citizens’ Carnival Foundation) celebrations began with meetings of groups of singers, bands, street musicians, parades,
MALAGA quartets and choirs in the Teatro Cervantes in a contest that attracts contestants from all over the province as well as other places in Andalusia. Gastronomy also played an important part during the preliminary festivities with cabbages, casseroles, rice dishes and stews featuring prominently; each district organises events where local dishes can be sampled by all often accompanied by Carnival songs that are always an essential part of the fun. Finally, the Carnival procession took to the streets of Málaga ending with the traditional burial of the sardine on Malagueta Beach. The “Burial of the Sardine” (Spanish: Entierro de la sardina) is a Spanish ceremony celebrating the end of carnival. The “Burial of the Sardine” during carnival was celebrated on Ash Wednesday and is a symbolical burial of the past to allow society to be reborn, transformed and with new vigour.
Cadiz Carnival
Cadiz can proudly claim to have the oldest carnival celebrations on mainland Spain. Dating back to the 16th century and influenced by the carnival in Venice, a trading partner of Cadiz at the time. The festival rivals Rio in its riot of colours, floats, processions, fireworks and other entertainment. During the Franco regime, carnival was banned for fear of revolt. But, Cadiz resisted and continued to this day. Cadiz spends the whole year preparing for its famous carnival celebrations; then in January, a month before the carnival parade, the groups that compete in the Falla Theatre
The winning poster for Carnaval de Cadiz 2016 is the work of artist Rafael Caballero Gomez Cadiz, and was chosen from a total of 53 works submitted
competition begin their rehearsals, and the carnival atmosphere is already underway. Various carnival groups organise open-air gastronomic events where they play their repertoire of songs in public and where you can also sample typical Cadiz produce. The songs are often a humorous depiction of events that have made the news over the course of the previous year. The Falla Theatre competition sees more than 100 groups taking part, with highlights including particularly the popular chirigotas. It is a fantastic spectacle, packed with humour, music and colour. The Grand Finale of the completion is one of the main attractions of the fiesta: it is held on the first Friday of Carnival and lasts until the following morning. The main types of performances during the Cadiz carnival are: Chirigotas - Comedy groups that perform satirical pieces about everything from politics to current events. Choirs - They tend to be out and about, entertaining people in the streets accompanied by stringed instruments singing both serious and humorous pieces. Comparsas - The most serious singers at the festival. They are known for their more classic musical talents and the more serious content of their songs. Quartets – Often not even a four-piece, as
it is carnival after all and anything goes, they are most often accompanied by none other than a kazoo and the beating of sticks. Romanceros - These are the solo acts at that roam the streets to entertain visitors and locals alike. The “charangas ilegales” are another characteristic element of the Cadiz Carnival: they usually convene in the Plaza de las Flores. These are families, groups of friends or workmates whose repertoire of songs compete for humour and laughs with the “official” groups. Fancy dress is obligatory at the Cadiz Carnival. Whether you do it alone, as a couple or in a group, it is essential to wear a costume, at least on the first Saturday and during the parades. There are two parades where the public become an active part of the multi-colour cavalcade. The Gran Cabalgata (Great Parade) is on the first Sunday. It proceeds down the avenue at the entrance to the city and attracts tens of thousands of people. The second is the Cabalgata del Humor (Comedy Parade), which goes through the old town on the last weekend. This Sunday (14th) the Carnival will official end with the celebration of a fried fish party, a carousel of the most popular musical groups, fireworks at the Caleta Beach and the “Quema de la bruja Piti” (the burning of the giant witch) as opposed to the traditional sardine. HE government-backed bailout of Banif (Banco Internacional do Funchal) comes less than two years after the state paid out €4.9 billion to rescue the country’s then second largest bank Banco Espirito Santo. Banif have been unable to repay the €700 million provided by the government during Portugal’s economic crisis. The state took a 60.5 percent stake in exchange for the cash and had been trying to sell Banif before new European rules come in on Jan. 1 which would impose losses on debt holders and depositors with more than €100,000 in the bank. Prime Minister Antonio Costa, whose Socialist government took over earlier this month, said the costs of the resolution were “very high for taxpayers”, but this was the only solution to safeguard depositors and financial stability. “This resolution is not a major systemic issue, but it does show how fragile the banking system and the economy still is in Portugal, where bad loans have been rising,” Nicholas Spiro, managing director at Spiro Sovereign Strategy in London, said. Portugal’s Left Bloc party, which supports the minority Socialist government in parliament, accused the previous centre-right government of hiding Banif’s problems to avoid an impact on public accounts on its
watch, and demanded the resignation of Bank of Portugal Governor Carlos Costa. “The Bank of Portugal has once again failed to live up to its responsibilities. We believe that Gov. Carlos Costa does not have the minimum conditions to stay in his position,” Mariana Mortagua, a senior Left Bloc member of parliament. The party wants an investigative committee be set up in parliament.
AGREED The Bank of Portugal said earlier that the deal had been agreed with European authorities and involved an injection of €2.2 billion “to cover future contingencies”. It said it would also protect Banif’s senior debt. Portugal’s Bank Resolution Fund, to which all financial institutions working in Portugal have to contribute, will provide €489 million, while the remaining nearly €1.77 billion would come directly from state coffers. Santander Totta, the Portuguese business of Santander, will take over all of Banif’s operations, except troubled assets which will be transferred to a special vehicle. The rest of Banif is to be wound down, including equity and subordinated debt. Banif has a market capitalisation of €91 million and had deposits of €6 billion at the end of September operating across its 150 branches in Portugal.
The Swiss National Bank recorded historical losses THE Swiss National Bank has announced it expects to post a full-year 2015 loss of 23 billion Swiss francs ($23.06 billion) a record loss in the banks long history since its founding in 1907. The losses are largely due to currency swings in the foreign exchange market. Despite the record losses, the bank still plans a pay-out to federal and local governments thanks to healthy cash reserves of 25,270 million euros.

Spain may compensate Bankia shareholders after flotation fraud claims S PAIN is considering compensating more than 300,000 small shareholders in lender Bankia over allegations of fraud after they bought into the bank’s listing a year before it was nationalised, the deputy economy minister said. Minority shareholders, mostly Spaniards, sued Bankia for around 830 million euros after their shares plummeted in value following its bailout in 2012 at the height of the euro zone debt crisis. Last week, Spain’s Supreme Court threw out two appeals by Bankia against such claims, leaving the door open to thousands of individual lawsuits against the bank. Deputy Economy Minister Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa told national radio his ministry was seriously weighing up a “fast and agile” arbi-
tration between Bankia and minority shareholders, without providing any details of a possible time frame. A spokeswoman for Bankia said that the lender planned to offer a legal solution for minority investors who held 60 percent of the bank’s roughly 3 billion euros of shares after the flotation. Bankia and its parent company BFA have so far set aside 1.84 billion euros between them to cover potential compensation. Investors and analysts have questioned whether the buffer will be enough if Bankia’s institutional investors also launch lawsuits related to its flotation, given the bank has said legal fees already total around 500 million euros. Greece bailout discussions continue GREECE’S lenders still need to be persuaded that Athens can plug a bigger than expected fiscal gap when talks on reforms needed under an international bailout resume next week. Talks between the heads of the EU/IMF mission reviewing Greece’s progress and the government over a tough pension reform plan, fiscal targets and the handling of bad loans, took a break after an intense four days of meetings. The talks are expected to resume “sometime next week” and then conclude two weeks later, Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos said, adding that technical teams were discussing the size of the fiscal gap for 2016 and the country’s performance last year. Greece’s stock market plunged about 8 percent at the beginning of the week amid concern that the bailout review had hit a snag. The country’s industrialist federation warned that delays in the completion of the review could hurt the economy. Before the review, sources close to the lenders said initial data indicated that Athens had to bridge a fiscal gap of well over 1.5 percent of GDP in 2016, up from 1 percent projected earlier, noting that these estimates would be later updated. Greece’s bailout target is for a 0.5 percent surplus in 2016 meaning that Athens needs to save more to achieve that target. The EU and the IMF has yet to agree on how much was required to bridge the fiscal gap. In an attempt to generate 1.8 billion euros in savings from its ailing pension system, Greece plans to increase social insurance contributions to buffer the elderly from pension cuts. But the sweeping cuts have triggered outrage among groups including lawyers and farmers, who have blocked motorways with their tractors for the past two weeks and were planning to shift their protests to central Athens.
US fines VW billions for environmental violations The U.S. Justice Department has sued Volkswagen for up to $90 billion for allegedly violating environmental laws - five times regulators’ initial estimate and a reminder of the carmaker’s problems nearly four months after its emissions scandal broke. Although such U.S. lawsuits are typically settled at a fraction of the theoretical maximum penalty, analysts said the size of the claim meant Volkswagen (VW) could face a larger bill than previously anticipated. The civil lawsuit, announced last week, reflects the growing number of allegations against VW since the German company admitted in September last year to installing devices to cheat emissions tests in several
2.0 litre diesel vehicle models. Initially, U.S. regulators initially Europe’s biggest carmaker could face fines in excess of $18 billion. The lawsuit had been expected, and analysts believe any fine will be far below the theoretical maximum. Although U.S. authorities sued Toyota for up to $58 billion for environmental violations around the turn of the century, they agreed a settlement that cost the Japanese carmaker about $34 million. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), accuses VW of four counts of violating the U.S. Clean Air Act, including tampering with the emissions control system and failing to report violations.

The perfect smile for him & her SWITCH on the television or open a magazine and there they are - perfect teeth. More than hair and definitely more than waistlines, smiles - and more importantly teeth - are often the first things you notice about someone, especially if they are bad. Stick with ‘I’ statements
7
Don’t hold a grudge
8
Use humour to release tension
9
Practice relaxation skills
E all know what anger is, and we’ve all felt it: whether as a fleeting annoyance or as fullfledged rage. Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems - problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. Recent statistics show that one in every 10 person suffer with anger management issues and statics are becoming more and more common across the rest of the world as we all try to balance; work, family, money and stress. A recent study by Harvard University found that in the two hours after an outburst the risks of a heart attack or stroke become significantly higher brought on by an increase in heart rate, and blood pressure. Although it can be tough sometimes, finding a way to prevent flair ups is key to a positive and healthy lifestyle. Here we look at 10 methods to curb that next outburst
1
Take a timeout
Counting to 10 isn’t just for kids. Before reacting to a tense situation, take a few moments to breathe deeply and count to 10.
To avoid criticizing or placing blame — which might only increase tension — use “I” statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say, “I’m upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes,” instead of, “You never do any housework.”
ANGRY ME!! Slowing down can help defuse your temper. If necessary, take a break from the person or situation until your frustration subsides a bit.
2
Once you’re calm, express your anger
As soon as you’re thinking clearly, express
your frustration in an assertive but non- confrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them.
3
Get some exercise
Physical activity can provide an outlet for your emotions, especially if you’re about to erupt. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other favourite physical activities. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out.
4
Think before you speak
5
Identify possible solutions
In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’ll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything — and allow others involved in the situation to do the same.
Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child’s messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Is your partner late for dinner every night? Schedule meals later in the evening — or agree to eat on your own a few times a week. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything, and might only make it worse.
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation. It’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times.
Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Don’t use sarcasm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse. When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises, imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as, “Take it easy.” You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation.
10
Know when to seek help
Learning to control anger is a challenge for everyone at times. Consider seeking help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you. You might explore local anger management classes or anger management counselling. With professional help, you can: • Learn what anger is • Identify what triggers your anger • Recognize signs that you’re becoming angry • Learn to respond to frustration and anger in a controlled, healthy way • Explore underlying feelings, such as sadness or depression Anger management classes and counselling can be done individually, with your partner or other family members, or in a group. Request a referral from your doctor to a counsellor specializing in anger management, or ask family members, friends or other contacts for recommendations.

HEN 8 year old Princess Tiaamii daughter of Katie Price hit the town with her mother in midDecember with her face heavily made up the internet became awash with comments of how bad a mother Katie was for sexualizing her daughter and for actively encouraging her to grown up too quickly. Katie never one to hold back remained unperturbed by the backlash, and instead continued to add fuel to fire by posting Instagram photos of her stunning daughter in a variety of shots again wearing a face full of make-up. But who is right and when should we let young girls wear make-up? Traditionalists will say makeup represents a girl’s eagerness and excitement to become a ‘grown up,’ it sexualizes them as they explore ways to make themselves more attractiveness to peers and encourages them to focus too much on their appearance. Others argue that by encouraging young girls to wear make-up at such a young age it promotes negative psychological issues that lead young girls to believe that their natural looks aren’t socially acceptable and that they will only be accepted by society if they cover up any ‘flaws’ visible to the naked eye. A survey conducted by the Renfrew Centre Foundation in America, discovered that one in five girls who had worn makeup between the ages of 8 and 18 years old experienced negative feelings about their looks when they don’t wear makeup, such as feeling self-conscious, unattractive or as if something is missing from their faces. Modern mothers argue that little girls who experiment with make-up just want to act like their mothers and shouldn’t be held back from expressing themselves. Society today is all about presenting ‘you’re best self ‘so what’s the harm in enhancing your looks if it makes you feel better or helps you fit in better. Modern mothers argue that growing up now is a lot harder than when they were kids, and today there are is so many more important things to worry about such as bullying, boys, drink and drugs that allowing there young daughters to experiment with a slick of mascara or lip gloss is the last thing on their minds. If you have a young daughter who is expressing a desire to wear make-up yet you feel she is not quite old enough here are 3 tips to help
1. Explain the Health and Hygiene Issues
Wearing makeup at such a young age can actually age the skin. . . The constant applying and removing of products can be very harsh on the face. Try explaining to your daughter how makeup is made and what’s in it after all what young girl wants to put crushed beetle wings on their lips!
2. Communicate, Don’t Just Forbid
If you’re not ready to let your daughter wear make-up but she wants to experiment try taking a proactive approach. Sit-down and explain why you are reluctant after all every
THE GREAT DEBATE
When should we let our kids start wearing make- up? child is different, and forbidding them only makes it worse. Try compromising. Open communication is the key to trust on both sides. . . . If children feel like you’re listening to them and not smothering them they will be more perceptive to your wishes.
3. Set Limits & Guidelines
So you don’t want your daughter wearing make up on a daily basis - so how about agreeing to letting her experiment but only at certain times or when going to certain places. Over time this will allow your daughter to prove that she wouldn’t abuse the privilege of wearing makeup.

RECENT survey undertaken by the British Dietetic Association found we spend on average €800 a year on new supplements, fitness classes and diet foods and more often than not these ‘fads’ are doing more harm than good. Sian Porter of the British Dietetic Association says ‘Fads often contradict themselves for instance, there’s been a furore over high sugars in fruit juice — yet one of the most popular diet trends at the moment is juicing which leads to people not knowing what is or isn’t healthy.’ Here, we reveal the health fads they would most like to banish.
HOT YOGA
Risk: Damaged knees
FOCUS ON HEALTH & BEAUTY
Health fads that do more harm than good From vegetable juice to Zumba classes and the latest ‘wonder’ vitamin, we can’t resist a new health fad - and after the excesses of Christmas it’s little wonder that people jump on the latest fad in an effort to get healthy again can’t tell the difference between these and boring old white sugar. ‘The body doesn’t process them any differently, and they still count as added sugar. Weight for weight, these “healthy” sugars often have more calories. ‘So, in theory, if you did a direct swap for regular sugar, without cutting the portion, you could end up taking in more calories.’
Doing yoga in a studio heated to a sweaty 40c has many celebrity fans, from Andy Murray to Gwyneth Paltrow. It promises to combine the toning and stretching of yoga with a cardiovascular workout. The hot temperatures kick into action your body’s cooling mechanism, boosting blood flow to the skin, so that heat from the blood can escape through the skin’s surface (this is why we go red when we’re hot). This boost in circulation raises your heart rate, and can also loosen muscles. However, this can make you feel more flexible than you really are, so you are more likely to push your joints beyond their natural stop-point, warns physiotherapist Sammy Margo. ‘I’ve seen knee injuries as a result of a particular yoga pose, called virasana, which involves sitting in a prayer-type position, knees bent, with legs pushed out either side of your bottom. ‘It deeply flexes the knees and in a heated environment you risk going too far and tearing or stretching a ligament. I’ve even seen cases where the cartilage that cushions the knee has been torn.’
meal. ‘The real damage is done by sipping on something acidic for hours at a time, or at regular intervals.’ According to Professor Walmsley, you should treat herbal tea — particularly fruit teas — as well as hot water and lemon with caution. ‘Stick to having it only with a meal, and don’t brush your teeth for at least an hour afterwards,’ he says. Also, watch your intake of acidic foods during the day. ‘If you had a grapefruit for breakfast, an apple mid-morning, balsamic vinegar on a salad at lunch, and a glass of wine before or after dinner, your mouth will have been acidic for most of the day,’ adds Professor Eder.
HIGH-DOSE VITAMINS
Risk: Vitamin deficiencies, serious disease
HERBAL TEA
Risk: Damaged tooth enamel
Risk: Weight gain
Enamel (the protective outer layer) starts to dissolve at a microscopic level whenever the mouth is too acidic, eventually leading to painful and sensitive teeth. ‘Each time you have something acidic, your mouth stays bad for your teeth for around an hour afterwards,’ says Andrew Eder, professor of restorative dentistry and dental education at University College London. ‘It’s not so much a problem if you have something acidic in one go, perhaps with a
DIY TOOTH WHITENING Risk: Yellow teeth
A trend for homemade recipes to whiten teeth — using highly acidic or abrasive ingredients — can actually make teeth appear more yellow as the outer enamel becomes worn away, says Professor Eder. ‘The internet is full of these crazy recipes. A common one is to mix acidic fruits such as
strawberries or lemon juice with salt or sand crystals into a paste and then rub that on your teeth.’ In the short term, teeth will look whiter, as the abrasive, acidic slurry rubs off dirt that makes teeth look darker. ‘But they will also start to attack the enamel,’ warns Professor Eder. As the enamel is gradually lost, the yellowish dentine layer underneath will start to show, leaving teeth permanently discoloured.
SLEEP MONITORS
Sipping herbal tea or hot water with lemon is many a slimmer’s tactic to skip the calories in milky tea or keep from snacking. ‘It may help your diet, but these could be terrible for teeth because the acid in them is erosive — lemon, in particular, is very acidic,’ says Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.
NATURAL SUGAR One of this year’s biggest health trends has been to cut down on sugar — and not without good reason, because too much sugar has been blamed for heart disease and high blood pressure, as well as diabetes and obesity. But so-called healthy alternatives to sugar are often no better, warns Sian Porter, of the British Dietetic Association. ‘It makes me cross when things such as agave nectar, honey, raw sugar, cane sugar, or fruit syrup are described as “healthy” sugar — your body

Risk: Poor sleep
Millions of us take supplements believing they protect against disease and help immunity. But, at best, these are a waste of money and, at worst, actually raise the risk of disease, says pharmacist Aidan Goggins, an expert in nutritional medicine. ‘Taking high doses of single nutrients is a bit like playing Russian roulette with your health,’ he says. ‘We now know that lots of vitamins and minerals, while good for us in certain amounts, become bad for you if you have too much — most supplements of vitamin E contain amounts linked to higher risk of heart disease and cancer. ‘They can also lead to deficiencies of other nutrients — too much zinc, which some people take for immunity, can reduce the amount of copper in the body (essential for healthy red blood cells and bones).’ ‘And this isn’t just about dodgy versions bought on the internet,’ he says. ‘The kind of supplements you buy in a High Street chemist are culpable, often being many times the dose you actually need.’
Fitness monitors and mobile phone apps that claim to track your sleep are ‘only 3035 per cent accurate, at best,’ says Dr Neil Stanley, who runs The Sleep Consultancy. ‘They work by detecting motion and guess whether you’re asleep and what sleep stage you’re in based on how much you’re moving — but the only way to know this for certain is to monitor brain activity and eye movement.’ And worrying about a reading that tells you your sleep quality is poor will only make sleep problems worse, says Dr Stanley. ‘A better way to judge if you’re getting enough good quality sleep is to ask yourself
how you feel at 11am — because of the way our body clock works, this is when most people feel at their best, whatever time you get up. ‘If you’re sleepy and struggling to concentrate by 11am, you may have a problem.’

PEARS: A Gift from the Gods
H
OMER, the famous author of the Odyessy, called pears “gift of the gods” and years later who are we to disagree! Pears have a graceful quality to them but are something of a fickle fruit they bruise easily taken on an unsightly brown colour when bruised and taste rather unpleasant if even slightly over- or under-ripe. But a perfectly ripe pear is a
heavenly thing – buttery, juicy, softly sweet. There are more than 5,000 varieties of pears the most obvious ones being Bartlett pears, Anjou, Bosc, Comice, Concorde, Seckel and Forellee. Pears are one of those foods that blends well with almost any foods sweet or sour, below are a few of our January must try recipes.
Gingersnap-Pear Cheesecake INGREDIENTS 1. 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2. 1 1/2 cups crushed gingersnaps (about 40 cookies) 3. 2 small ripe pears (any kind), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/8 inch thick 4. 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

WINE O’ CLOCK... BRING IT ON!
BIODYNAMIC
ORGANIC
LOW ALCOHOL
Biodynamic farming uses certain techniques to get the best from the soil, which is considered to be an important organism or a life force in itself. Biodynamic, organic and natural wines are often more expensive than normal commercial wines; biodynamic vineyards have to use special fertilisers, emphasising the health of the soil and require a more intensive hands on approach. But experts insist this is worth the trouble; the wines taste better and as a wine drinker, you can be assured that there are no nasty chemicals.
Organic is basically biodynamic but without the mysticism, they don’t use any synthetic chemicals, weed killers, or add anything artificial to the wines. This is not only good for humans drinking the wine but also for local wildlife.
The simplest thing to do is drink lower alcohol wine. Percentages have been going up over the last few decades. During the 70s, an average French table wine was between 8 and 12%. In subsequent years, with New World wines that grow in warmer climates raising alcohol percentages, and increasing sophistication in wine making techniques, it is not uncommon to have wines of 14%.
2009 Durfort-Vivens Margaux - 13% A, rich lovely tasting claret. Beautiful dark red colour with purple tints. The nose is very expressive, with intense aromas of cassis and blackberries, which are also noticeable in the mid-palate. Ample and round, the body is well structured with polished tannins and delicate layers of oak. Smoke and slight spicy notes rise after further airing of the wine. Stylish and balanced, the 2009 Vivens is a very refined and multi-nuanced Margaux. 2010 Muscat de Rivesaltes - 15% Three different processes are used for this wine. Some of the grapes are pressed and the juice starts fermenting as soon as it has been racked. A bouquet of citrus and exotic fruit, peaches and apricots. When aged for ten years or so, the aromas metamorphose into candied fruit and oriental spices, this wine goes well with a plate of fruit for afters.
2012 Adobe Carmenère - 14%, A certified organic Carmenere from the Colchagua valley in Chile is deep ruby red, with aromas of cherries and spice, especially black pepper, on the nose. Robust and full bodied on the palate. Smooth and velvety, with ripe and well-balanced tannins. Aged in oak barrels and goes brilliantly with pasta and pizza. 2013 Pouilly Fumé Domaine Jonathan Pabiot 12.5% Pale and refined, this is classic Pouilly-Fumé, with brooding mineral notes intermingling with the citrus fruit core. The palate is pithy and complex, supported by fine acidity and leafy undertones.
G.D. Vajra Moscato D’asti - 5.5% Greenish yellow with straw yellow hues. Expressive aromas of sage and fresh yellow fruits such as apricots, peaches and exotic fruits. A delicate yet persistent pelage, refreshes and cleans your palate. ¬ A Lightly effervescent Italian wine, delicate, and tastes great with cake and deserts. 2010 Von Hovel - 8% A light-skinned, aromatic Reisling - nicely matched with spicy foods.

FOCUS ON FOOD & FINE DINING
The Blood Sausage makes a fashionable come-back TRADITIONALLY a staple of the Scottish fry-up and the centrepiece to a hearty breakfast for the working man, the humble black pudding is known to put hairs on anyone’s chest packed full of protein and practically carb free, as well as being rich in iron and zinc – two minerals frequently missing from today’s modern diet, the black pudding is according to health experts this year’s most fashionable super-food.
For those who don’t know or are unsure exactly what black pudding is, this iron-rich food is made of curdled and boiled pig blood, mixed with chunks of pork fat, spices and oatmeal then stuffed into a sausage casing For those not so keen to start their day with a full English breakfast we offer some modern day twists on how to incorporate this new super-food into your diet
BLACK PUDDING WITH PEAR AND BLUE CHEESE
BLACK PUDDING SCOTCH EGGS
Black pudding - hot or cold - makes the perfect foil for a sweet and salty salad. Ingredients • 1 red chicory, in ½cm slices • ½ red-skinned pear, cored and diced • 50g Cashel Blue, chilled • 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1 tsp olive oil • 300g black pudding, cut into 1½cm slices
Ingredients • 5 eggs • 450g/16oz sausage meat • 2 spring (green) onions, very finely chopped • A handful of breadcrumbs • A small handful of parsley or coriander, finely chopped • A small handful of plain flour for dusting the eggs • Salt & black pepper • Oil for frying
Issue 14 February 11 - 24, 2016 BLACK PUDDING HOT POT
Ingredients • 225g black pudding (skinned and cut into slices) • 225g potatoes (thinly sliced) • 225g carrots (thinly sliced) • 1 large onion (finely chopped) • 1 teaspoon sage (chopped. Or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage) • 25g flour • 1 teaspoon gravy powder (such as Bisto) • 450ml water • salt & pepper A hearty hot-pot made with black pudding and lots of vegetables. This nutritious casserole is good served with sliced cooked beetroot. Freshly made, warm scotch eggs are dramatically better than their shop bought equivalents. Scotch eggs are fun, and quite easy to make - and because they can be enjoyed hot or cold, they make a great snack or treat. By substituting the sausage meat with black pudding we create a scotch egg with a much sharper tang, which really combines well with the soft boiled egg inside. The other important thing to remember is to boil the eggs for long enough so the whites go firm - but the yolk stays as soft as possible - add the eggs to simmering water and cooking for 7 minutes should be enough.

We are delighted to announce that for Summer 16 we will launch two new destinations to Lisbon and Madrid both of which we know will be a popular choice with our customers.” In addition and based on customer demand we will also be launching a Manchester to Tel Aviv service. THE WORLD’S COOLEST HOTEL I
CEHOTEL opened its doors on 11th December and as with previous years this year’s hotel is as unique and different as last years. WHY?… Well because each year when the Torne River freezes over and the ice reaches the required thickness, tractors with huge custommade chainsaws carve out square ice blocks the size of a Volkswagen. On the river banks, arched metal frames are erected to create the shape of the hotel. The ice blocks are then placed on top and all around the frames, and then the gaps are filled with “snice”— a mixture of snow and ice water which literally fuse solidly together around the frames resulting in a new – reborn – ICEHOTEL. Then in April, the pop-up property melts and flows back into the river from where it came.
Not only is the hotel reborn every year but each year the hotel invites ice carving artists from around the world to submit designs for individually themed Art Suites. For 2016, the 55-room resort features 19 beautifully designed accommodations, including one with a lifesize elephant sculpture to connote an “elephant in the room” theme. Past creative innovations have included a TRON suite themed after the movie, with fibre optic lighting embedded in the ice. There was also a recent BMW/MINI partnership in a guest room with ice chairs shaped like Recaro bucket seats and other allusions to MINI car culture.
Anna Katrin Kraus and Hans Aescht created an ice cave from gothic-like pillars for one hotel room Anna Sofia Maag created a three-metre-tall African elephant for one of the Icehotel’s suites
Issue 14 February 11 - 24, 2016
The suites this year include a room full of flying sheep and a 1970s love capsule. • The Cesare’s Wake suite references 1920s cult horror film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, and was designed by Petros Dermatas and Ellie Souti. • A three-metre-tall African elephant towers over the ice-framed bed in the suite by Swedish sculptor Anna Sofia Maag, who also created the unicorn for the hotel’s main hall in 2014. • The designers of last year’s ice church – Tjåsa Gusfors and David Andrén – based a suite named Show Me What You Got on a peacock. • Annie Hanauer and Matt Chan focussed their design on cairns – piles of rocks used in open space areas to mark hiking trails. Ice slabs are stacked together from floor to ceiling to form towers and arches. • The Power of Love room by Sebastian Scheller and Kristina Möckel features enormous ice pipes and a love barometer, while Spanish father-son duo Rob and Timsam Harding have created a “Mediterranean interpretation of the Arctic”. • Gothic-like pillars create an ice cave for The Flying Buttress suite, influenced by the shape of hotel’s arched ceiling. • A duo from Germany looked to physics to design a suite of molecules and fractals, creating sharp angular shapes in the room. The pair was part of a trio that created a square vortex room at the 2014 hotel. The hotel also features a beautifully crafted ice church where over 100 couples

will get married this year and an Ice Bar that will serve drinks in glasses carved from . . . ice of course! Though dining options are limited to the hotel’s sole restaurant, guests will have little to complain about with Michelintrained chef Alexander Meier at the helm. To keep patrons entertained, the hotel offers a myriad of fun activities like snowshoeing, moose or snowmobile safaris, dog sledding, and even overnight wilderness camping. For those not able or brave enough to visit the hotel during the winter, there is some good news. By December 2016, the owners plan to construct a new sustainable ICEHOTEL that will be open all year! Chilled to perfection by the 24-hour Arctic sunlight it will feature 20 suites, a bar, and gallery. But before you get worried, the new ice hotel will not replace the original classic. It will merely allow visitors to visit the area year round and enable them to admire the Northern Lights in the winter and hike under the midnight Arctic sun in the summer!

riding on the tables with no protective clothing, especially when on roads alongside motor vehicles,” a spokesman for Western Australian Police Spokesman said. The owner and builder of the six-seater tables said they could reach up to 30mph, but were still “pretty safe” and handled “like a go-cart”. The unnamed man said he and his friends only drove onto the busy road to reach a petrol station and fill their tables. He said two police officers approached the group while they were there. “Both drivers were sober, the police asked us to push them back across the road to the beach. We complied with all requests by police on Sunday,” he added. It is not clear how the tables were steered but they were fitted with a motor and what appeared to be a brake lever. The motorised picnic table are the latest in what appears to be an Australian craze for attaching motors to bizarre objects. In January, a man was fined £700 for riding an unlicensed beer cooler along a footpath in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.
JAPAN
Felissimo is a Japanese online retailer that celebrates all things feline, but their speciality seems to be cat odours. They have just released their second cat-scented product in the last 12 months. First they came out with a cat paw-scented cream, and now they’re introducing a special fabric spray that smells of cats’ foreheads. The product is called ‘Mohu Mohu Odeko no Kaori’ or Fluffy Forehead Fragrance Fabric Water in English. The company revealed that they developed the product after collecting extensive data using customer surveys. Although whether they really have captured the essence of cat forehead is not clear as users of the product described it as smelling like ‘the smell of sunshine’, ‘a futon that’s been dried in the sun’, and ‘sweet bread’.
and set his mind on becoming a professional tattoo artist. Not many people gave him a chance, but he steadily honed his foot drawing skills, and after his aunt helped him buy his first tattoo gun, he learned to operate it with his toes just as well as others did with their hands. Angie Tagalog, Brian’s mother, admits that raising him was not easy, but she always made it a point to let him explore his options. “The day I gave birth to him, well, I freaked out,” she recalled. “The first year I would cry almost every day. I still do every now and then. But we never hid him. He wore a tank top when he was a newborn. I didn’t shield him in any way.” And perhaps that’s what gave him the confidence to achieve everything he’s ever wanted, despite the very obvious absence of two limbs. “I was born without arms,” he said. “But that has not slowed me down.”

MUDDY MUTTS TO THE RESCUE Tired of spending all that time cleaning your pet after going out for a walk? Now with the Muddy Mutts Dog Apparel you don’t have to!
M SMALL pets, such as cats, rabbits and small dogs can be difficult to keep in carriers. Upet’s semi-sphere can stop them from escaping and keeps them safe in your care. Founded in 2013 U-pets practically designed backpack cases, satchels, and bags are great for keeping your furry friend with you on all your adventures. Take Fido and Kitty out to the park, on a plane, or to the vet in your choice of colours and budget friendly designs. The pet carrier’s window can be switched to mesh or removed for small dogs. U-pet designs allow your pets to enjoy the scenery and interact with the outside world. Show your lovely pets to the world, don’t hide them in your bags, this range of bags give improves your pets mod by letting them see the light and allows to you to spend more time with them, by taking them where you go. In a safe non-toxic environment. www.u-pet.co
UDDY Mutts Dog Apparel are perfect for all seasons. They are not a fashion garment, but rather an essential piece of outdoor clothing, intended to protect your dog from the elements and make their owners life a little bit easier. Muddy Mutts are perfect to be worn on their own or they can be combined with a fleecelined, waterproof dog rain coat or any other dog coat or jacket for all-over protection. Add dog boots that won’t fall off and the coverage is complete. From head to toe, (or should we say tail), your dog will stay clean and dry no matter what the weather. Muddy Mutts Dog Wear provides a practical and versatile way to keep your canine companion clean and dry. It’s a fact... even when the sun is shining, if the ground is damp, your dog will come home muddy and wet. Imagine returning from a walk and being able to leave the mud and dirt at the door, instead of having it dragged through your home. Protect your floors and carpet, (not to mention your couch, bed or even the dog’s bed), from the grit and sand which naturally attaches itself to your dog’s legs. Have you ever taken your dog to a field to run around and then spent the rest of your day picking burs out of their fur? What makes Muddy Mutts perfect for your dog? • All four legs and belly are protected – remember, your dog gets wet underneath not on top when walking on wet, dirty ground • Muddy Mutts’ unique design is easy to put on and take off, and allows your dog free movement for walking and running • Muddy Mutts are designed to allow both male and female dogs to do their ‘business’ • Adjustable straps and elastic cuffs allow for a comfortable fit • They feature reflective tape around each leg for nighttime safety • They are made with a waterproof fabric which easily rinses clean, or they can be thrown in the washing machine • They are available in 6 sizes, XX-Small to X-Large to cover a range of different sized and shaped dogs
• Adjustable cuffs and straps for a secure fit The advantage of Muddy Mutts’ unique design is they are cooler and less restrictive than all-over dog rain suits. They are ideal for when it is not actually raining but the ground is wet. If it’s not raining, why cover the top half of your dog? Just cover what needs covering. But what about those times when it IS rain-
ing? (...or snowing, or sleeting, or drizzling!) Muddy Mutts are designed to be worn with any type of traditional dog rain coat. Combining Muddy Mutts with a waterproof, windproof jacket will protect your dog from the worst Mother Nature has to offer. Muddy Mutts can easily be worn with a variety of dog boots, keeping your pals paws clean and dry.
Muddy Mutts was started by a professional dog groomer in rural Ontario, someone who knows a lot about muddy mutts. The Muddy Mutts dog apparel resulted from the determination to solve a recurring problem – long clean up times when taking their two dogs on daily walks. Driven to resolve this problem the designers put their heads together and came up with a very unique and completely practical solution. They created dog apparel that protects the dog where they get dirty. Many hours of designing, testing and refining the product led to the first two generations of Muddy Mutts dog wear.

Music to the ears of every United fan
R
EPORTS claim that Manchester United have ‘held talks’ with Jose Mourinho to succeed Louis van Gaal. Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes is alleged to have held informal discussions with United to discuss the “special one’s” imminent move to Manchester United. These discussions follow the disappointing and lacklustre year of united under Van Gaal who have so far failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League were also knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough and currently sit in the table. Although Van Gaal has 18 months remaining on his contract he has been under intense pressure following the teams disappointing run of form, earlier this year he offered to resign following a defeat at Stoke on Boxing Day, but as the pressure and more impor-
tantly the media spotlight focused on him he has become more bullish over his prospects of staying at United, “I have signed a three-year contract and I have said in all my press conferences that it’s a process, not one game, I want to continue until the end. If I am not willing to do that, I don’t think I would have started here 1½ year’s ago. This is not the first time Mourinho has been linked with united, he was considered to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson when he left in 2013 but doubts raised by non-executive director and former player Sir Bobby Charlton over his personality and style of football led to David Moyes being appointed. With the announcement that Pep Guardiola will be managing the blue side of Manchester from Mourinho’s personality and style of play is exactly what united need!
Leicester fan turns down ‘cash out’ offer of £3,200 LEICESTER are flying high in the premier league sitting five point ahead after their 3-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday and one optimistic fan, who at the start of the season placed a £5 bet on his team to win the title, has refused a cash–out offer of £3,200.00 Leigh Herbert placed the 5000/1 bet with William Hill at the start of the season and if the foxes continue their magnificent run looks set to net himself £25,000. “I am going to hang in there, I believe in fairy tales and £25,000 will be a life changing win,” said the 39-year old. William Hill, have revealed 12 people had placed the same bet at the same odds and that one punter has placed a £75 each way on Leicester at 1500/1 with a pay-out of £140,775 if the Foxes go all the way.
New 2016/17 Premier league logo unveiled A NEW updated Premier League logo has been revealed and many people have noticed that the iconic Lion logo looks startling similar to that of Mufasa from the Lion King The new design which retains the lion icon an icon it has used since its inception in 1992 and represents the Premier League’s first visual rebrand since 2006. It also sees the Premier League move away from title sponsorship. “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known simply as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted to present ourselves as an organisation and competition,” said Richard Masters, the Premier League’s managing director.

The 25-yearold son of Diesis was euthanized at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket, England, last week due to the infirmities of old age. Halling began his career with Newmarket trainer John Gosden, putting together a string of wins in minor races before being hailed as a future champion by easily winning the 1994 Cambridgeshire Handicap, one of Europe’s most fiercely competitive handicaps.

Heavyweight champion Fury ready to ‘walk away’ WORLD heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has told reporters he is struggling for motivation and could quit boxing. The 27-yearold Briton, who stunned Vladimir Klitschko to claim the world heavyweight crown with a points win in Germany in November, may even hang up his gloves before facing the Ukrainian in a rematch scheduled for May or June. “I’m struggling to get motivated,” said Fury “I could walk away. I could just sail into the sunset unbeaten with all the belts and live a normal life.” Fury (25-0), who drew flak for his offensive comments about women, homosexuality and abortion late last year, said he would rather spend more time with his family than chase money or try to secure a legacy. “All that I would be boxing for is money and I always thought to myself I never want to let sport become about money, he added.” “I’ve accomplished a dream. It’s about how
much motivation I have to keep going on. There is life after boxing and I don’t know what I’m going to do at the moment. I haven’t even cemented I am going to fight in a rematch.” Fans are advised to take Fury’s comments on the chin, as Fury previously threatened to retire after fellow Briton David Haye twice withdrew from bouts against him through injury in 2013.

Germany returns to Grand Prix Schedule
A
LTHOUGH Bernie Ecclestone has cast fresh long-term doubt on the future of the German GP by suggesting the Nurburgring is unlikely to return to the F1 calendar, Hockenheim will return to the calendar in 2016, with the German GP confirmed for 31 July, but it is not clear whether the venue would be able to host the race every year. For the first time in 55 years, neither the Nurburgring nor Hockenheim featured in the 2015 F1 season. The Nurburgring, which has been crippled by financial problems in recent years has failed to agree a new deal with Ecclestone and to add even more insult to injury Ecclestone states that the Nurburgring’s place on the calendar would have been safe for “100 years” had his 2014 bid to buy the famous circuit, which was then in administration, been accepted. Although Ecclestone doubts the Nurburgring - which has staged 40 grand prix since 1951 - will return, officials recently insisted they were still targeting a 2017 comeback. Speaking in November, Nurburgring’s chief executive Carsten Schumacher told Motorsport Total Magazine: “We strive for a Formula 1 race in 2017 and are in appropriate discussions with Bernie Ecclestone. The topic of Formula 1 is not off the table.”
F1 manufacturers agree to cut engine costs
FORMULA One’s four manufacturers have agreed a deal to reduce the cost of engines and ensure that no team is left without a supply, sources at the governing FIA said after meetings in Geneva. In exchange, the manufacturers were assured that the current V6 turbo hybrid power unit regulations would remain stable until at least 2020, staving off the threat of an alternative independent supplier being introduced. The agreement, details of which had yet to be finalised, will come into force in 2018. The four manufacturers -- Ferrari, Mercedes,
Renault and Honda -- had agreed to come up with proposals by last Friday with the FIA and commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone threatening to tender for an independent option if no progress was made. The situation came to a head last year when former champions Red Bull struggled to secure an engine for this season. In the end they managed to patch up frayed relations with Renault and continue with the French manufacturer after Mercedes ruled out a supply, Ferrari offered only an old engine and Honda’s interest was vetoed by partners McLaren.

Sergio Garcia and Valderrama to host Spanish Open

I’m still the right man for the job!
ALDERRAMA will stage the Spanish Open for the first time in April, with the Sergio Garcia Foundation as official host of the event at the course in Sotogrande, southern Spain, the European Tour announced on Wednesday. The venue that in 1997 became the first course in mainland Europe to stage the Ryder Cup, will host the opening tournament of the European season from April 14-17, a week after the U.S Masters at Augusta, with 2 million euros of prize money on offer.
VICTORIOUS Garcia, who has won 11 times on the European Tour and has been in five victorious Ryder Cup teams, set up his foundation in 2002. “This is a whole new way of working together with the European Tour and I am very proud to be a part of it,” he said in a statement. “I personally have great memories of the golf course, having won the Andalucia Valderrama Masters there in 2011 and I am sure that all the players who tee up in April will enjoy testing their game against the fantastic layout.”

ARY Neville insists he is still the right man for the job stating “I have faith in myself and the players” and the only thing to turn this around is to win games. The former Manchester United defender who was appointed manager of Valencia two months ago is still waiting for his first league win in management. The former Manchester United captain has gone nine games in Spain without winning and suffered a humiliating 7-0
defeat at the hands of Barcelona last week - the second leg of their semi-final is being played as we go to press. If Neville is unable to turn his losing team around quickly it has been suggested that the sporting director, Jesús García Pitarch, has already lined up possible replacements with former Spurs manager Juande Ramos or the former Sevilla coach Joaquín Caparrós possible candidates. Valencia is 14th in the Spanish league with five victories in 23 games.
