FAR FROM FOOLS
Fans of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” have to wait until The CW series returns in July to see if the magicians have anything new up their sleeves for the show’s fifth season—unless they’re visiting Las Vegas in March. The TV series will be filming at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino March 7 through 15, and fans can get free tickets to attend a taping at the Rio box office. For those visiting afterward, there’s still a good chance they’ll see some of the new illusions Penn & Teller will close out each episode with in their Las Vegas production, as the guys sometimes rehearse the numbers onstage before the taping. Ticket holders are always guaranteed some surprises, though, as the show is constantly changing. For tickets, visit riolasvegas.com.

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay created Bobby’s Burger Palace
A CELEBRITY CHEF BURGER THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT BOBBY FLAY SERVES UP A TASTE OF AMERICA WITH BOBBY’S BURGER PALACE
By Heather Turk
I
f you think you can’t afford to eat at one of the best celebrity chef restaurants on the Strip—think again.
Located Stripside by Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, Bobby’s Burger Palace boasts a menu of high-quality, never-frozen burgers inspired by celebrity chef Bobby Flay’s travels through the United States. “When you’re a chef and you go out to dinner, you’re not always looking for something highend like foie gras,” the Food Network star told Sunseeker. “I’ve always been a burger guy and thought it would be cool to have my own burger place. We opened the first Bobby’s Burger Palace in 2008 [in New York], and now we’re opening our 18th location in Atlanta.”
Photos courtesy of Bobby’s Burger Palace
Unlike some other gourmet burger restaurants that “put too much on a burger, so the taste is all muddled,” Flay said the burgers at Bobby’s Burger Palace are “thoughtful and simple” so guests can taste all of the different flavors. Each burger offers guests a taste of America, like the Cuban-inspired Miami burger pressed with ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and mayo, and can come “Crunchified”—topped with potato chips—for free.
are paying attention,” Flay said. While Flay is often busy filming new episodes of his hit TV series, including “Beat Bobby Flay” and “Iron Chef America,” the acclaimed chef said his restaurants remain the most important thing to him. Not surprisingly, Flay frequently visits his Las Vegas restaurants— which also include Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace and a new seafood restaurant opening at Palms Casino Resort—and makes sure to teach his staff at Bobby’s Burger Palace the same techniques he teaches the staffs at his more high-end restaurants to help with consistency when he’s away. “Bobby’s Burger Palace is great when you want a restaurant that’s casual, inexpensive and delivers in terms of flavor,” Flay said. “I truly think our burgers are the best in town.” Bobby’s Burger Palace is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight. For more information, visit bobbysburgerpalace.com.
Bobby’s Burger Palace also showcases a special limited-time burger and milkshake each month, giving repeat customers something new to enjoy. There’s an off-themenu burger Flay’s fans know about, too, made the way he enjoys a burger: served Crunchified with cheese, coleslaw, pickled jalapeños and chipotle ketchup. “The Bobby Style burger is ordered more in Las Vegas than at any of our other restaurants, which proves people in Las Vegas

he Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace is not your grandfather’s buffet. Your grandfather ate plates of baked chicken, peas and carrots and jello. The Bacchanal, voted the “number one buffet in the country” by the New York Post last year, serves truffle deviled eggs, avocado toast, wagyu beef and dim sum. Brian Mongeon, buffet general manager, oversees the modern food attraction that has garnered the attention of young foodies. “A younger generation has discovered us, and they talk to one another via social media,” he said. “They have a sophisticated palate, and we’re constantly working to meet customer demands. Where other buffets serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at specific times, we start at 7:30 a.m. with a host of unique breakfast items, freshly-squeezed specialty juices, prime rib and shrimp.” Mongeon said the upscale buffet just celebrated its fifth anniversary and is now serving some 4,000 guests a day.

It’s true that our regular mashed potatoes are delicious, but I like it when people get away from their comfort zone and discover something new.” The buffet’s executive chef, Leticia Nunez, is in charge of nine chefs and 124 cooks who keep busy preparing some 300 food items daily. The most popular are smoked beef brisket, iced seafood displays featuring crab legs and all the items at the Asian station. “This buffet is different because we use quality ingredients for our authentic dishes,” she said. “Our price point may be a little higher, but consider what is being served and how it’s being prepared.”

Featuring a live band, backup singers and dancers, the production includes such timeless hits as “Georgia On My Mind” and “Baby I Need Your Loving.” While the music is great, it’s the cast’s dedication to their respective parts that makes the show so entertaining—particularly Greg Gaineslanstet’s energetic performance as the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. caesars.com/ballys-las-vegas/ shows/solid_gold_soul

PENN & TELLER GET READY TO TAPE A NEW SEASON OF “FOOL US” By Heather Turk
P
enn & Teller fans traveling to Las Vegas in March are in for a special treat. Although the duo’s acclaimed show at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino may be dark at the start of the month, the magicians will be filming their CW series, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” inside the Penn & Teller Theater March 7 through 15—and fans are invited to attend a taping for free! Now in its fifth season, Penn Jillette credits part of the series’ success with the fact that it’s not based on whether or not the magicians on the show can impress Penn & Teller with their skills, but on whether or not they can fool them. “Unlike many other talent competition shows on TV, we are not judging contestants based on talent or on our own personal tastes— they’ve already made it on proving they are

some of the best magicians around,” Jillette told Sunseeker. “It’s whether or not they can fool us. We have no idea who is booked on the show—we have no say. We are seeing [the magicians] for the first time, the exact same moment as the audience. I think that format coupled with some of the best magic ever performed on TV is part of its success.” Jillette said he and Teller got the idea for the series years ago when talent competition shows first started becoming popular, and thought that the idea of contestants being judged not by their talent but instead on the element of skill to fool the judges was “different and kind of nice.” The result is a show that’s not only entertained millions of viewers, but also ranks high with Jillette among the many TV shows he and Teller have been a part of. “It’s probably the best show I’ve ever worked on,” Jillette said, “and I’m not saying that just because I produce it, star on it and created it.” While “Fool Us” may focus on the many magicians hoping to fool Penn & Teller with their tricks, Penn & Teller also close out each episode by doing an illusion of their own for the audience. Jillette said that for this season, almost every one of the 13 bits Penn & Teller plan to perform is something new they’ve been working on—which is quite impressive considering the arsenal of illusions the duo has at their disposal. Jillette has said in the past that he and Teller have eight hours of material
for a 90-minute show, but the duo is constantly working on new tricks to keep things fresh and challenge themselves.

Fans who see Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas production after “Fool Us” tapes its next season are still likely to see some of the new illusions filmed for the series, as the duo began adding them to the show last December to rehearse them prior to filming. Guests will also see several other new bits the duo has introduced in recent years, including a trick six years in the making where Penn & Teller make an African pigmy spotted elephant named Elsie disappear. The magicians recently debuted a fun, new opening number, too, featuring giant Penn & Teller inflatables. Given how hard Penn & Teller work on their craft, it’s hard to imagine when they have time for anything else, but the two are often busy working on various solo projects as well. This includes a production of “Macbeth” Teller will be directing at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater April 25 through June 24. Penn & Teller will also once again be teaming up to support the annual Aid for AIDS of Nevada AIDS Walk this spring, which benefits a cause that’s been dear to them long before they
started performing in Las Vegas. “When we were on Broadway in the mid1980s and HIV/AIDS was ravaging the Broadway community, we got involved with the start of Broadway Cares,” Jillette said. “When we moved to Vegas, we wanted to continue that involvement to raise awareness and help those in the Vegas Valley living with HIV/ AIDS.” Since starting the Penn & Teller Challenge in 2003, which matches dollar for dollar every contribution made to their walk team, Penn & Teller have matched more than $1 million for the nonprofit organization. Additionally, they have served as the AIDS Walk’s Grand Marshals since 2001. While Penn & Teller are clearly passionate about other things outside of magic, there’s nothing like seeing the two magic icons perform live. Tickets to attend a taping of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” are available at the Rio box office on a first come, first served basis, while tickets to see their Las Vegas show start at just $75, plus tax and fees. Show runs select nights at 9 p.m. For more information, visit riolasvegas.com.

t’s time to play a game. After thrilling guests with not one, but two “SAW”-themed haunted houses in 2009, Fright Dome owner and creator Jason Egan has once again teamed up with Lionsgate to develop a year-round attraction unlike anything Las Vegas has ever seen. Located just off-Strip, The Official SAW Escape – Las Vegas is the first and only officially licensed “SAW” escape attraction in the world, offering a high-tech, interactive experience that’s more than 10,000 square feet. “I always wanted to do something year-round,” Egan told Sunseeker. “I noticed escape rooms were very popular, but hesitated to create a venue with just one room. I wanted to incorporate multiple rooms where guests would have to outsmart an entire facility.” Guests will step into the Egan & Co. Meat building, designed to look like an old meat packing plant, at 2121 Industrial Road and find themselves a part of Jigsaw’s latest game. With the help of Lionsgate, the franchise’s producers and even Tobin Bell—the voice of Jigsaw himself—Egan not only created new scenes and traps that fit the popular horror franchise, but also recreated scenes and props from the films to provide fans with an experience that’s both fresh and familiar.

The entire experience takes a little more than an hour to complete and is not recommended for guests ages 16 or younger; a parent or guardian must be present for anyone under the age of 18. “Our attraction is based on a franchise that should be the true inventor of the escape room,” Egan concluded. “People love ‘SAW’ on the big screen—now they get to experience their favorite movie live.” For more information, visit sawescaperoom.com.

Céline Dion’s second Las Vegas residency, “Céline,” returns to The Colosseum stage select dates this March and April

THE COLOSSEUM WELCOMES BACK SEVERAL RESIDENT ACTS THIS MARCH AND APRIL By Heather Turk

riginally built for Céline Dion’s “A New Day…” in 2003, The Colosseum at Caesars Palace continues to be one of the Las Vegas Strip’s most prestigious venues and is home to a wide range of acclaimed residencies. Allegiant passengers visiting The Entertainment Capital of the World this March and April are sure to discover one of their favorite acts once again gracing The Colosseum stage. On March 1 and 2, Elton John wraps up the second-to-last run of his second residency at the venue, “The Million Dollar Piano.” Scheduled for its final performance on May 17, the production features a selection of iconic hits and classic album tracks from throughout John’s five-decade career—songs like “Circle of Life” and “Indian Sunset.” While the focal point of the production is supposed to be the show’s namesake piano, an engineering marvel featuring more than 68 LED video screens created by Yamaha, it’s John’s pitch-perfect vocals and impressive piano-playing skills that truly steal the spotlight. John will return to The Colosseum stage on April 28 to kick off the production’s final 14 performances. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Those visiting in early March or late April will also find The Colosseum’s resident funnyman, Jerry Seinfeld, returning to perform standup comedy. A true comedy icon, Seinfeld is sure 34

to have audiences crying from laughing so hard during his set. Seinfeld performs March 9 and 10, and April 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. It’s guaranteed to be an evening of laughter you won’t want to miss. Country music fans visiting in mid/late March will discover two of country music’s most beloved acts performing in a residency unlike any other in town. “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” features Reba and Brooks & Dunn performing both together and separately during the production, which showcases more than 30 of the country superstars’ greatest hits. While hearing Reba and Brooks & Dunn perform such hit songs as Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” and Reba’s “Why Haven’t I Heard from You” together is obviously a treat for fans, seeing the chemistry these three longtime friends have onstage is worth the ticket price alone. Fans will hear some great stories throughout the show, like when Ronnie Dunn recalls the time his youngest daughter wanted a horse and Reba called him in the middle of the night to say if he didn’t buy her one, she would and send him the bill. There are a couple of poignant moments throughout the production, too, like when the trio is joined onstage by members of the military during the show’s patriotic finale, “Only in America.” A concert experience fans won’t soon forget, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” returns Wednesday, Friday and Saturday

Fans will get some insight into the singer’s life during the show, too, as Dion addresses the audience now more than ever to let fans in on just who she is and how she’s doing since her husband’s death in 2016. A DIFFERENT KIND OF ROCK STAR RESIDENT MUSIC DIRECTOR TODD WAETZIG ON DRUMMING WITH BLUE MAN GROUP
By Heather Turk
C
onsidering Todd Waetzig has spent the past 20 years drumming for Blue Man Group, it seems only fitting that another group of rockers known as much for their makeup as their music first got him interested in becoming a drummer. “My older brother had a KISS record,” Waetzig recalled, “and I saw the cover, put the music on and something just clicked. Between the makeup and the sound, I couldn’t stop being obsessed [with rock music] from that point forward. I would even bang pencils on the side of my bed like a drummer.” While it’s only natural to think Waetzig went on to become a Blue Man, he’s actually a

drummer in the five-piece band that performs onstage with the bald and blue trio every night. One of 10 full-time band members in the Las Vegas production, Waetzig drums in the show six or seven times a week. A former student at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Waetzig said his background drumming in various rock ’n’ roll bands over the years helped prepare him for his career with Blue Man Group. “To be a Blue Man Group drummer, you have to be a rock drummer but also know things rock drummers don’t,” Waetzig explained. “It’s really an odd skill set; the requirements are just so unique.” One of the biggest challenges with being in the band is that the members are not only separated from each other since they perform in two separate overhead lofts, but they’re also separated from the Blue Men and the action onstage drawing the audience’s attention. Waetzig said the Blue Man Group band must play with a “heightened sense of emotion” so ticket holders connect with them during the show. In addition to making sure the audience feels an emotional connection to the band every night, Waetzig works hard as Blue Man Group’s Resident Musical Director to ensure the band maintains the “musical aesthetic” created by Blue Man Group in New York while simultaneously keeping the Las Vegas show running smoothly.

“Most of us, well, one of my guys—the young guy—wasn’t gung-ho on coming to Las Vegas,” Morris recalled. “For years, Las Vegas was this place where old people would go when their career was over. But Las Vegas was at a turning point then, and I was excited about the opportunity and wanted to give it a shot. We played at Flamingo in the winter [of 2011], which is regarded as the worst time of year and, by the grace of God, did good numbers. A couple of years later, we started playing at The Mirage.” Now entering their sixth year of performing at the resort, Boyz II Men’s hit show continues to be one of the Strip’s most beloved residencies. Returning Friday through Sunday, April 6 through 29 at 7:30 p.m. (10 p.m. on April 14), the production not only showcases the group’s smooth vocals as they perform their greatest hits, but also a variety of other songs from classic Motown tracks like “My Girl” to rockin’ numbers like Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman.” While Morris noted that the group, which also consists of Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris (the aforementioned “young guy”), has tried to change the show’s format a bit over the years, they “always end up putting things back the way it was” since audiences love the show so much. One crowd-pleasing moment in particular is when the guys pass out red roses to select
audience members while singing “I’ll Make Love to You.” Minutes later, the guys step offstage to dance with some ticket holders while performing “End of the Road.” It’s moments like these that make the show so unique and unforgettable. “We didn’t want to be your typical Vegas show where you pay big money to watch people dance and flip around, and then you leave,” Morris explained. “We wanted the show to be interactive—and we didn’t want to charge high ticket prices.” As for how long the group plans on staying at The Mirage, Morris simply replied, “We’re staying until they kick us out.” Hopefully, the end of the road is nowhere in sight. et ready for a great season of dining in downtown Las Vegas! From Crispy Brussels Sprouts to Cranberry Salmon Salad, here are some places with menu items that’ll excite you in the months ahead.
DOWNTOWN TERRACE KITCHEN & BAR
With winter drawing to a close, put away your sweater and spend a sunlit afternoon on the terrace overlooking Downtown Container Park’s live entertainment and grassy play area. Of course, you’ll want to graze on the shareable menu of seasonal farm fresh dishes, too. Enjoy specialties like The Terrace, made with grilled corn, shrimp, avocado, tomato, cilantro and chimichurri or the Tuna Tartare topped with avocado, mango and fried wonton. Plus, Downtown Terrace’s Cranberry Salmon Salad, with its lovely light cranberry vinaigrette, is sure to be counted among spring’s quintessential fare. downtownterracelv.com
like an agrarian work of art. Imagine baby beets combined with hazelnut, hearts of palm, creamy goat cheese, pickled mustard seeds and lemon ash—they’re heavenly! Therapy’s Signature Salad, a mix of watermelon radishes, Granny Smith apples, candied walnuts and bleu cheese crumbles tossed in white balsamic vinaigrette, is another gorgeous goodie that’s also good for you. And, if you’re looking for something fun to feast on, try In the “Gnudi,” comprised of baked ricotta, truffled fig jam and roasted almonds on cranberry and walnut crostini. All of these pair well with the restaurant’s refreshing Pisco Passion cocktail, a blend of pisco, pamplemousse citrus, grapefruit, lemon juice and grenadine. therapylv.com
PARK ON FREMONT
This picturesque bar and eatery at 506 Fremont St. is in full bloom. Not only is the back patio a veritable garden with lots of foliage and potted flowers, but you can also let your taste buds welcome the warmer weather with several of its latest dishes. First off, try the Crispy Brussels Sprouts served with Pink Lady apples, chilied brown butter almonds and a honey glaze. You’ll never think of the cute cabbage-like veggie in the same way again! For breakfast and brunch lovers, the Avocado Toast with Hass avocados, a poached farm egg and toasted sunflower seeds on country sourdough bread is a culinary delight. parkonfremont.com

as Vegas has a reputation for imploding many of its classic resorts, but that doesn’t mean every hotel in town has been built within the past 30 years. In fact, some of Las Vegas’ most luxurious properties are classic resorts downtown that have evolved with the times to offer guests a truly timeless experience, no matter what year it is!
EL CORTEZ HOTEL & CASINO
GOLDEN GATE HOTEL & CASINO
Las Vegas’ original hotel only continues to get better with age thanks to a recent expansion that included a redesigned façade, an expanded casino floor, upgraded back-of-house space and a 20-foot extension of its outdoor bar, OneBar at One Fremont Street. Although the luxurious changes give much of the property a fresh new look, the historic hotel and casino still pays tribute to its past with a collection of items on display in its lobby from when it first opened in 1906. Guests can also step back in time by enjoying a drink where Frank Sinatra used to sit at Bar Prohibition! and watching the casino’s flapperesque Dancing Dealers while playing a game. goldengatecasino.com 50

As one of the city’s only nonprofit arts venues, The Smith Center, celebrating its 6th anniversary in March 2018, was designed to be a hub of the artistic community in Las Vegas, and is as much a tourist destination as it is a local favorite for its incredible productions and support for the arts. ne of downtown Las Vegas’ most acclaimed attractions is currently undergoing an extensive renovation that will introduce several exciting new experiences to guests. Ranked No. 20 among the Top 25 Museums in the United States in TripAdvisor’s 2017 Travelers’ Choice awards, The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is adding a variety of new experiences that are both educational and entertaining. One of the most eagerly anticipated additions is The Underground, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Prohibition that’s scheduled to open in April. Situated discreetly in the basement of the museum, The Underground will house a real working distillery and speakeasy where guests can drink Prohibition-era cocktails and even sample the museum’s own moonshine. The immersive exhibit will feature numerous artifacts on display to add depth and context to the experience, too, like a 5-gallon whiskey still and a 1926 beaded chiffon dress.

These new experiences complement the museum’s many other informative exhibits already on display, which include such noteworthy artifacts as a portion of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre wall, the chair used in Carson City’s final gas chamber execution and Al Capone’s Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver, and will be joined by an expanded retail space set to debut this spring offering light, café-style fare. START THE DAY RIGHT FUEL UP AT ONE OF THE VALLEY’S TOP BREAKFAST SPOTS By Teresa Bitler

MATT’S BIG BREAKFAST
Even now, with four Valley locations, there’s almost always a wait to get a table at Matt’s Big Breakfast. That’s because the eatery, which has been featured on the Food Network, uses only fresh, organic ingredients whenever possible and makes everything from scratch. The wait is definitely worth it. Dive into a thick, cakey waffle served with syrup warmed on the stove; pesto-smothered Iowa pork chop served with two cage-free eggs; or scrambled eggs with Molinari sopressata salami. Daily specials are listed on a chalkboard.
VOVOMEENA
On 7th Avenue, Vovomeena dishes up some of the most creative breakfast fare in Phoenix. Try the Mexican-style eggs benedict made with chorizo and served on sopes, or the 3 Sisters Omelet, featuring corn, black beans and zucchini. For something more traditional, go with the B.M.O.C. (Big Man On Campus): a pork chop, two eggs, waffle and Portuguese donut. Vovomeena also specializes in Japanese cold-brewed ice coffee, crafted by allowing ice water to filter through fresh ground coffee. Drink straight up cold brew or infused versions like orange peel ginger, vanilla cocoa pod and banana bread. Of course, there’s hot coffee, too. Vovomeena.com
Want another reason to go? Matt’s Big Breakfast sources from local companies including The Pork Shop, Hickman’s Family Farms and Schreiner’s Fine Sausage, so when you eat here, you’re sampling the best of the Valley. Mattsbigbreakfast.com
PERK EATERY
Family-owned Perk Eatery serves so many great breakfast dishes you may have a hard time deciding. Start with the ones Guy Fieri sampled on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: roasted pork breakfast enchiladas topped with two eggs; stuffing drenched in sausage gravy and topped with two eggs; or French toast stuffed with brie and drizzled with red wine syrup. The Scottsdale breakfast spot is also known for its fluffy, vanilla-scented pancakes, lemon curd and ricotta French toast, and potato pancakes, made from a family recipe and served with applesauce and sour cream. Sip locally roasted coffee, ground fresh for every pot, along with your meal. Perkeatery.com

IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING THE CACTUS LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING SEASON IS ARIZONA’S SIGNATURE SPORTING EVENT
By Charlie Vascellaro
W
here can you go and see half of the Major Leagues’ 30 teams play without ever having to drive more than 47 miles? That would be the Cactus League, where 15 teams prepare for the season in a relatively tight radius surrounding Phoenix, Ariz. The beginning of the baseball season has been a tradition in Arizona for more than 70 consecutive years with fans spending lazy afternoons at the Valley’s 10 state-of-the-art ballpark facilities. Nearby, you’ll find a wide variety of relative peripheral activities. It is here where the ballparks are surrounded by mesas, rock formations and cacti. It is here where stars stretch, hit, throw and play games in the laid-back atmosphere of Minor League-sized parks with a beautiful, warm and frequently sunny backdrop. The 2017 Cleveland Indians rattled off the longest winning streak in major league history (22) and appeared poised to win a second straight American League pennant and avenge the team’s 2016 World Series loss to the Chicago Cubs, but were upended by the upstart Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. The Indians have shared their all-Ohio Goodyear Ballpark spring training home with the Cincinnati Reds for the last decade, which means there’s a game on the schedule in Goodyear just about every day of the Cactus League season. 62
RECREATION
Other Cactus League teams that have enjoyed recent success include the 2016 World Series champion Cubs and the 2015 Series champion Kansas City Royals, who have shared their Surprise Stadium spring facility with the Texas Rangers since 2003. The Cubs have held a foothold on the city of Mesa since 1952, moving from historic Rendezvous Park into two iterations of Hohokam Stadium before opening their spectacular new Sloan Park in 2014. Tickets to Cubs home games remain at a premium and are often sold out, with the exception of a smattering of lawn seating released for day-of-game sales. Since 2014, the Oakland A’s have called the Cubs’ former Hohokam Stadium facility their home. The stadium is a short drive from the city of Mesa’s ever increasing number of dining and entertainment options and thriving craft brewery scene. The Cactus League has been the spring home to The Milwaukee Brewers since 1998; the team recently signed a 25year contract extension that will keep the team in town until 2043! Wherever the Brewers finish in the standings, the team still manages to lead the league in tailgate parties every year. The San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners continue baseballs’ lengthiest spring training partnership, which began at their
Peoria Sports Complex in 1994, a harbinger of the Cactus League’s westward expansion. The San Francisco Giants began conducting spring training in Arizona in 1947 and have called their classic red-brick-andgreen-awning Scottsdale Stadium home since 1984. Located in the heart of Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale, the ballpark remains one of the league’s most popular destinations. Located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community just across the Arizona State Loop 101 Freeway from the Talking Stick Resort Casino, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is the shared spring training facility of the Colorado Rockies and the home state Arizona Diamondbacks. Six of the Cactus League’s 10 ballparks are also utilized by the Arizona Fall League, providing an almost seamless segue into the spring training season.

THE “SHOW STOPPER” SHAKE AT ZUZU

Every month, Zuzu pastry chef Audrey Enriquez creates a “show stopper” of a milkshake. Consider her take on strawberry shortcake, for example: an overflowing strawberry shake topped with a white chocolate-covered strawberry, piece of shortcake, strawberry shortcake ice cream bar and strawberry milk crumbles. No matter the current version—past shakes have included Campfire S’mores and Chocolate Malt— it’s guaranteed to be a jaw dropper. In fact, it’s so Instagrammable, it has its own Instagram hashtag, #zuzushowstoppershake. hotelvalleyho.com/zuzu

TIRAMISU OF THE DAY AT CRUDO
For nearly 20 years, Tracy Dempsey has treated the Valley to her scrumptious desserts, first as the pastry chef at restaurants like Cowboy Ciao and then as the driving force behind her own company, Tracy Dempsey Originals. You can find her desserts today at a number of local restaurants, including Crudo. Of the three Dempsey desserts on Crudo’s menu, the Tiramisu of the Day is the star. Served in a mason jar, her seasonal interpretations have included everything from chocolate to lemon and beyond. crudoaz.com
It’s hard to narrow it down to just one standout dessert at Proof, but its decadent Salted Caramel Pretzel Chocolate Cake is to die for. Visitors on the hunt for a fully immersive Western experience will want to check out Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch located just east of Mesa. The ranch was built in 1927 and is hidden from view along the Bush Highway that winds through the Tonto National Forest. Twenty cottage-style cabins make up the ranch and dot the landscape at the bank of the Salt River where the river meets the lake. The shared experience features traditional group dinners where guests are summoned by the ringing of a decades-old wrought iron triangle, and hearty meals are followed by traditional cowboy songs and story-telling entertainment. While staying at the ranch, guests can sign up for daily horseback rides along the dusty desert trails that lead into the countryside, and when the river flow is high,
kayaking and paddle boarding is offered right from the shore. The true masterpiece is the main lodge where guests gather for games, reading and just plain relaxing. For more information visit SaguaroLakeRanch.com.

With BART stations located throughout both cities, including at Oakland International Airport, the economical train system practically takes visitors to the doorstep of many of the Bay Area’s top attractions. EMBARCADERO STATION
BART passengers can shop ’til they drop once they disembark at this station, as it drops them off near downtown San Francisco’s Embarcadero Center. Spanning four blocks along Sacramento Street, the mixed-use complex boasts more than 100 shopping and dining destinations as well as a seven-screen movie theater screening first-run and foreign films. Foodies will find a collection of notable restaurants close-by along Steuart Street, too, and a world-class public food market at the Ferry Building Marketplace. During the weekdays, the PresidiGo Shuttle system even makes a stop at the station, connecting riders to the Presidio of San Francisco (home of The Walt Disney Family Museum) for free from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again after 7:30 p.m.
MONTGOMERY STREET STATION
This San Francisco stop is located near one of the largest Chinatowns outside of China. As if that wasn’t enough to get passengers to step off of the train car, it also connects riders to several of downtown San Francisco’s most popular destinations, including the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art: the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Other worthwhile attractions that are easily walkable include the Yerba Buena Gardens, a multi-use cultural center and park with its own 100-year-old carousel, bowling alley and ice skating rink, and the Museum of the African Diaspora. THANK YOU ALLEGIANT
We made a mistake and missed an earlier flight, which was devastating because it was to see my mom, who is in poor health in Florida. Patty, the gate agent, really came through for us in a big way and was the ultimate professional. Teammates like this make me eager to travel with Allegiant again.
– Dorothy M, Indiana
I want to make it known, the crew on my flight was the most professional, helpful and friendly crew I have ever flown with. I had a small medical issue which caused me to briefly lose consciousness. I was caught by the flight attendant, Natalie, who prevented me from hitting my head. For the remainder of the flight, I was met with the upmost concern and care from your flight staff. Their compassionate response was above and beyond what I would ever expected from a flight crew.
- Scott M, Florida
This was my first time flying with Allegiant. My flights were amazing! The flight home was especially pleasurable with the two flight attendants Rosemary and Crystal. They were friendly, helpful and went out of their way to make us comfortable. I will definitely fly Allegiant again.

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Tracy Tulle, vice president of inflight services and the chairperson of the CELT leadership team
HOW ALLEGIANT IS ENSURING ITS RENEWED COMMITMENT TO TRAVELERS REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY
F
rom the beginning, low fares and friendly, reliable service have been cornerstones of what we do here at Allegiant. As we grow as a travel company, it’s become even more important to everyone on our team we continue to uphold those original values. We formed the Customer Experience Leadership Team (CELT) to set a course for improving your experience when traveling with us. One of its first actions was drafting a new Customer Commitment Statement: “Allegiant Team Members are dedicated to providing a friendly, straightforward travel experience that is safe, reliable and affordable.” Sunseeker Magazine recently sat down with Tracy Tulle, vice president of inflight services and the chairperson of the CELT leadership team, to discuss the ways Allegiant is following through on its commitment to improving your travel experience.
What is Allegiant doing to strengthen its relationship with its passengers? In 2016, we kicked off a new focus on the customer experience by creating the Customer Experience Leadership Team (CELT). It took about a year for CELT to really understand where we were excelling and where we could improve the experience without changing the one thing our customers love us for – our low-cost fares. We have already made some policy changes that have had a significant impact on customer satisfaction, and this year we are going to focus on aligning our training and operation to fulfill that commitment in everything we do.
Transparency is a word that’s often thrown around in many industries. What steps is Allegiant taking to open
up channels of communication and actually allow for transparency?
First and foremost, we are straightforward with our customers about who we are and what we offer. We want to ensure our customers know what they’re buying and never feel tricked or confused. Internally, we’ve recently launched new communications tools, including daily on-time reports, which allow the entire company – from a gate agent to an accountant – to see how we are performing in a number of important areas. Information is power, and we want our team members and our customers empowered to either ensure a great customer experience or receive one at great value.
What’s Allegiant’s stance on empowering team members to handle issues on the ground and nip problems in the bud? Our team members are our most valuable asset and know better than anyone what our travelers want and need. Team members at all levels of the organization are encouraged to use common sense and good judgment to improve a customer’s experience. Traveling can be stressful and sometimes not everything goes according to plan – in those situations our team members can spread a little sunshine.
How will Allegiant know if it’s doing a good job in improving the travel experience?
We listen to our customers and they tell us! We have multiple touchpoints for customer feedback – we have a post-travel survey available through email and our mobile app, and we are tracking social media comments and feedback to our customer care team. Safety will always be our number one priority at Allegiant, but CELT is making the customer experience a principal part of Allegiant’s culture. VACATIONS

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Q&A WITH SHAWN HACKLER, FLIGHT DISPATCHER/ INSTRUCTOR (HQ) By Kerry McGee, Staff Writer, Editor
When did you join Allegiant? In 2015, I joined Allegiant as a Flight Dispatcher, and about a year ago I became a Dispatch Instructor. I worked in the casino industry for ten years until I lost my job in 2014. When I got my pink slip I decided it was time to make a huge change. I knew Las Vegas had a growing and successful hometown airline, so I went back to school and got my Dispatcher’s license and started my career with Allegiant.
Photos courtesy of Shawn Hackler
What does a dispatcher do? We create the “game plan” for every flight. This includes evaluating the weather, reviewing air traffic control (ATC) constraints, such as traffic jams (yes, they exist in the sky) or airspace closures, and analyzing passenger loads, runway conditions, and anything else that impacts the safety and comfort of our travelers. We also calculate the fuel load, build the route, and add alternate airports, if needed. We determine aircraft performance and configuration to ensure the safest and most efficient operation for the flight. We then send our plan to the captain and ATC to execute and monitor the progress of the flight. We are the eyes and ears of the flight crew until everyone reaches their destination. How else does your job impact our travelers? Flights can’t leave without our sign-off. Every day presents a series of unique challenges that, without dispatchers, could keep planes on the ground. We want our travelers to make it to their destination with as few delays as
possible, so we are focused on getting our planes in the sky. What about your job gets you excited to go to work? I work with a great group of people throughout the company and we share knowledge to help put the puzzle pieces together. Every day I walk away having learned something new. If you could go on vacation anywhere in the U.S.A. where would you go? New Orleans! I’d love to ride The St. Charles Line (the oldest running streetcar line), tour the French Quarter and eat food at the local spots. Have you been able to take advantage of your flight benefits? Yes! My wife and I have been to Bellingham, Washington. to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. I’ve visited family in Idaho Falls, Idaho, seen Northern California and Reno, Nevada. Since I live in a destination city, it is fun to take a quick trip to our passengers’ hometowns. There are always great getaways available. What is your Las Vegas “locals” tip? There is a ton of locally-produced live entertainment just a stone’s throw from the Las Vegas Strip. From family-oriented musicals and classic works to live music, burlesque and sketch comedy, there is something for everyone. Once you’ve had a chance to experience the big budget performances, see what’s playing around the valley, and join the locals at one of the dozens of intimate venues. SPOTLIGHT

Wish Kid William gets a tour of the flight deck before take off
HELPING TO MAKE MORE THAN WISHES COME TRUE By Christoper Lewis
I
t ends up as something more than it seems. At first glance, it may appear as just a nice trip to a theme park or meeting one’s favorite celebrity. But when granted, a wish to a critically ill child means so much more than that.
For a parent, it’s hope and a chance to witness their child enjoy their childhood once again. For the volunteers and everyone involved in making these wishes come true, it’s amazing moment to witness and something proud to be a part of.
To the child, it serves as a beacon that drives them forward, spurs courage and inspires them on even the toughest days.
Nearly 80% of wishes require air travel, and Allegiant is proud to play a role in helping them come true. Since 2012, Allegiant has partnered with Make-AWish®, providing more than 900 wish flights to help make dreams come true for children across the country. “Our partnership with Make-A-Wish over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Our crews love interacting with wish families and work hard to make every wish flight an unforgettable experience,” says Hilarie Grey, Allegiant’s Director of Corporate Communications. “From our very first wish kid, Jamie, to the more than 900 kids we’ve flown since, it’s an honor make these trips of a lifetime possible.” Allegiant also donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Kids Snack Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. Additionally, Allegiant in 2017 welcomed Make-AWish Southern Nevada to our corporate headquarters campus in Las Vegas, sponsoring a $1.5 million renovation of space, and a $1 per year lease.

Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN
MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.
