‘The Bad Guys’ proves you should never judge a book by its cover

Based on the New York Times best-selling children’s book series by Aaron Blabey (who also served as an executive producer on the film), DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” releases in theaters April 22. The action-packed comedy features an all-star voice cast that includes Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) as the dashing pickpocket, Mr. Wolf; Marc Maron (“GLOW”) as the seen-it-all safecracker, Mr. Snake;

Craig Robinson (“The Office”) as the cool master of disguise, Mr. Shark; Anthony Ramos (“In the Heights”) as the short-fused muscle, Mr. Piranha; and Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (“The Farewell”) as the sharp-tongued expert hacker, Ms. Tarantula. turned-first-time feature film director Pierre Perifel (“Kung Fu Panda”) and producers Damon Ross (“Nacho Libre”) and Rebecca Huntley (“The Boss Baby”) to talk about the hilarious and heartfelt heist film, which is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. For those unfamiliar with the Scholastic book series, what is “The Bad Guys” about? Perifel: It’s the story of these five animals that we’re all afraid of, and because we categorize them as bad, they never really had a chance to be anything else. One day, Mr. Wolf — who is the leader of the gang — decides that he wants to change his life and become a good guy. The problem is that they’re really, really bad at being good and really good at being bad. So, it’s the journey of these five guys trying to become accepted and heroes, basically. It was the perfect book to adapt because it had so much potential. Is the film’s plot based on one of the graphic novels, or is it an entirely new story? Huntley: The movie has elements of the first few books and then we were able to infuse it with additional ideas of our own. Hopefully, it’s a really nice blend. People who are familiar with the books can see elements that they recognize, but then it also has a fresh take on other aspects of the plot. How involved was Aaron Blabey during the production of the film? Ross: Aaron was involved quite a bit, especially in the early stages as we were cooking up the plot for the movie. I’ve worked on a lot of high-profile book-to-film adaptations, and having your author onboard and enthusiastic about the process really helps to lend the movie additional integrity and authenticity — especially with the fan base of the books. It’s also great when the author gives you liberty to stray from the books now and again in order to make the best possible movie experience,

and that is something Aaron encouraged us to do to from the very beginning. Did any heist movies like “Ocean’s Eleven” make you want to work on a film like this? Ross: I love the heist genre and the “Ocean’s” franchise was a big influence, for sure. I love stories that have twists and turns and cons on top of other cons, but I also love [Quentin] Tarantino’s movies and Edgar Wright’s films. The whole crime caper genre was just so appealing and ripe for animation because it hadn’t been done before. This idea of being a family gateway to that genre was a big part of what got me turned on to the books in the first place. But I also always remind people that this is a makeover story, and for me that’s a whole other genre that we had fun exploring. We spent a lot of time watching “My Fair Lady” and “Trading Places.” Like all of DreamWorks’ animated features, “The Bad Guys” has a great cast attached to it. Who were you the most excited to see sign on to the film? Ross: It’s a tough question. They are all so talented and amazing in their performances. I’d say the one I was most excited about was getting Sam Rockwell attached to the movie. He’s the first actor we went to, and when he said yes it gave us this boost of confidence. We knew we had something super special and it gave us this great momentum. The rest of the cast pretty much fell into place because everybody wants to work with Sam Rockwell. He’s an actor’s actor. He’s just incredibly generous and such a joy to work with. DreamWorks is known for creating animated characters loved by generations, like Shrek, Toothless (“How to Train Your Dragon”) and Po (“Kung Fu Panda”). What makes the cast of characters in “The Bad Guys” worthy of being a part of DreamWorks’ animated legacy? Huntley: I would say our cast is worthy of being part of the DreamWorks legacy because they’re characters you care deeply about. These characters are bad guys. They’ve been judged in a negative way, but then you see that they have these wonderful qualities that cause us to change our opinion of them for the better. You root for them to succeed and at the end of the day, I feel like they give us hope. I think we see that in [DreamWorks Animation’s] legacy characters — that they are all characters who are either misjudged or misunderstood and you root for them. What message do you hope viewers take away from the film? Perifel: To me, it’s really all about your actions are what define you and not what you look like. It’s a very social message that’s quite relevant these days — it’s always been relevant.

Veterans’ Park’s new Women Veterans Monuments

The world’s largest lionfish tournament, the Emerald Coast Open, returns to Destin this spring as well. With more than 20 types of edible fish available off its shores, it’s no surprise that Destin — affectionately called the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” — boasts the largest commercial charter fishing fleet in the country. Guests visiting Destin-Fort Walton Beach will have no trouble savoring some of the area’s fresh-caught seafood, as the destination is home to numerous restaurants known for their delicious Gulf-to-table cuisine. One of the area’s signature seafood restaurants is actually owned by the great, great grandson of Destin’s founder, Leonard Destin. Honoring Leonard’s love of the water by serving sustainable seafood that’s delivered fresh daily, Dewey Destin’s has three nearby locations that serve up beautiful waterfront views alongside unique specialty dishes. At Dewey Destin’s casually refined Harborside restaurant, the broiled shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and wrapped in bacon is a guest favorite, whereas at Dewey Destin’s fast-casual Destin and Navarre locations, customers love the fried Gulf Shrimp served with French fries and homemade jalapeño hush puppies. For those who tested their luck out on the water earlier in the day, all three locations will also cook a guest’s fresh catch for them. destinseafood.com Harbor Docks does a lot of “hook and cooks” as well and will cook up to a pound of fish per person. A local favorite since 1979, Harbor Docks has fresh seafood delivered from its wholesale seafood market up to two times a day, with many of the items caught and unloaded by its own boats at the dock below the restaurant. Visitors hoping to enrich their mind during their trip to Destin-Fort Walton Beach will discover several local attractions that are both educational and entertaining. One of the area’s most enlightening attractions is the Emerald Coast Science Center. Offering guests of all ages a day of hands-on fun and learning, the museum boasts more than 45 exhibits that teach visitors about natural phenomena and basic scientific principles. This spring, it will welcome a new outdoor exhibit — the Florida Trail Nature Walk — where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna found on the Florida Trail, as well as a new animated sandbox where guests can redesign a variety of habitats. Foodies visiting Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach will find that there’s no better place to dine on some of the area’s finest fare than Fishermen’s Village. The open-air promenade on Charlotte Harbor is home to not only 35 independently owned shops and boutiques, but also six waterfront restaurants sure to wow diners with their flavorful fare and stunning views. In fact, one of Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach’s most popular restaurants, The Captain’s Table, is actually located at Fishermen’s Village. A local favorite since 1986, the casual fine dining restaurant is known as much for its fresh seafood and succulent steaks as its unsurpassed views of Charlotte Harbor, which can be seen from its indoor bar, dining room, private dining area and outdoor rooftop deck. Guests can dine on one of the restaurant’s signature dinner items, like the Seafood Risotto made with sautéed shrimp, scallops, mussels and half of a lobster tail, while taking in the nightly sunset. Lunch is available, too, and a monthly seafood buffet is held on the first Friday night of every month. For a livelier atmosphere, Harpoon Harry’s is located just downstairs from The Captain’s Table. The openair seafood restaurant has a variety of arcade games to play and more than 30 TVs to watch sporting events on,

Diners can soak up the waterfront views from the restaurant’s wraparound patio or through large sliding glass doors in the indoor dining room while relishing an array of fresh seafood and tasty American cuisine. Given that Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach boasts more than 70 parks, nature preserves and recreational areas and is surrounded by lush greenery, it should come as no surprise that the area is home to a wealth of wildlife viewing opportunities. Nevertheless, for a wildlife viewing experience unlike any other, there’s no place quite like Peace River Wildlife Center (PRWC). Tucked into the mangroves overlooking Charlotte Harbor at Punta Gorda’s Ponce de Leon Park, the nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation and education center not only rescues and rehabilitates native Florida wildlife, but also teaches guests how to live in harmony with nature. Just last year alone, the center treated nearly 3,000 injured animals. “Whether it’s being hit by a car, attacked by a pet dog or cat or having their nests destroyed, 85 percent of the injured wildlife we 24

With everything there is for travelers to see and do in the St. Pete/Clearwater area, sometimes it can be easy to forget that a vacation is supposed to be relaxing. Fortunately, there’s a pristine paradise close by where visitors can decompress while still having some fun in the sun.

Named the seventh best beach on Dr. Beach’s 2021 Top 10 Beaches list, Caladesi Island State Park is one of the few completely natural islands located along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Accessible only by boat, the tranquil getaway is just a 20-minute ferry ride away from Dunedin’s Honeymoon Island State Park. “Caladesi Island has a very rich history,” said Janet Henderson, president of the Caladesi Island Ferry, the only boat service licensed to transport passengers to Caladesi Island. “A family once farmed there, and a few books have been written about life on the island. Our intent is to give our passengers a vacation within their vacation. Their trip is enhanced by stories related by our captains and crew about the history and formation of this barrier island.”

Kayaking is a popular activity on Caladesi Island

Following the informative ferry ride over the calm waters of St. Joseph Sound, passengers will disembark on Caladesi Island near a small café where they can buy sandwiches, snacks and drinks. They will then walk along a pathway that leads them to the island’s uncrowded, 3-mile beach, known for its soft, crystalline quartz sand and sparkling azure waters. Once on the beach, guests can go swimming, shelling, sunbathing, snorkeling and even saltwater fishing. Chairs and umbrellas can be rented for the day, or guests can bring their own. Kayak rentals are also available for $35 per person, so nature enthusiasts can paddle a 3-mile trail through the island’s extensive mangrove forest. Part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, Caladesi Island is abounding with wildlife, so it’s not uncommon for paddlers to see wading and diving birds like blue herons and ospreys while they’re out on the water.

Center, where visitors can explore various handson exhibits detailing the island’s history, habitat and wildlife. Additionally, guests can get a panoramic view of the undeveloped island from the discovery center’s observation deck, located 25 feet above the ground.

Although Caladesi Island’s beautiful white sand beach may be its main draw, there are plenty of other attractions for guests to enjoy as well. There’s a playground for kids to play on, tree-shaded areas for a picnic and a nature trail that offers 2.5 miles of easy hiking through a variety of habitats, including slash pine forests. The island even welcomed a new attraction this past winter, The Caladesi Discovery

The Caladesi Island Ferry currently runs every half hour daily from 10 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m., based upon daylight. Passengers have up to four hours to enjoy the island, depending on what time they depart Honeymoon Island State Park. One of Tampa’s newest attractions is sure to hit a home run with baseball fans. The Tampa Baseball Museum at the Al Lopez House opened in the Ybor City Historic District last September, approximately one mile from the home’s original location where Tampa’s first Major League player, manager and National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee lived for more than 50 years. The restored house features 1,200 square feet of permanent and rotating exhibits that cover Tampa’s baseball history over the past 135 years. “Tampa has always been a baseball town,” said Chantal Hevia, president and CEO of the Ybor City Museum Society, which owns and developed the museum. “From the first team formed in Ybor City by the Cubans in 1887, to the spring training tradition, to the latest Major League Baseball inductee, to the Tampa Bay Rays’ record-setting accomplishments, there is unique living history that represents the area’s passion for the game.” Visitors to the museum can learn more about Tampa’s robust history with the sport by watching “Baseball from the Beginning,” a series of historical videos produced by the Tampa Bay Rays. Hevia noted that Tampa has one of the highest numbers of MLB players per capita in the country, and the museum actually

features a collection of baseballs signed by each of the 89 players from Hillsborough County who reached the Majors. Other artifacts on display include an original team jersey circa 1950 from the city’s first Minor League team, the Tampa Smokers, and a representation of Al Lopez Field, Tampa’s spring training and Minor League ballpark that operated from 1955 to 1988.
