A comedy classic returns

Jay Leno brings ‘You Bet Your Life’ back to television for a new generation to enjoy

Jay Leno may joke that the only reason he is hosting the remake of “You Bet Your Life” is because he wanted to do something else after leaving “The Tonight Show,” but the 1950s game show hosted by Groucho Marx holds a special spot in the late-night legend’s heart. “‘You Bet Your Life’ was always my favorite game show because I liked the way it was put together,” Leno told Sunseeker. “People would just walk out and Groucho would start talking to them. They weren’t in funny costumes or anything, they were just regular people, but then you’d find out, ‘Oh, that person’s pretty interesting,’ which is the way real life is.” Now airing in syndication, the comedy game show also stars Leno’s former “Tonight Show” bandleader Kevin Eubanks as co-host. Each 30-minute episode features two pairs of contestants trying to answer five questions 6

“You Bet Your Life” premiered in September

ENTERTAINMENT from a randomly selected category — like Greek mythology or acting roles played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — to win up to $5,000. While some questions are multiple choice, others are not. For the final question, the contestants must decide if they want to risk what they’ve won so far in an attempt to double their winnings or simply walk away with their share of the prize money that’s already in the bank.

Although the contestants on “You Bet Your Life” are obviously trying to win some cash, Leno stressed that the focus of the show isn’t on the money. Instead, it’s on the contestants. “You bring out two complete strangers, hopefully opposites — maybe a rapper from New York City and a lady who is a farmer in Ohio — and they have to team up then and there to win the money,” Leno explained. “You’ll see the interactions between the people and be surprised at what they know and what they don’t know, and that’s sort of the whole basis of the show. There’s also a comedy element, like Headlines (a ‘Tonight Show’ staple), but really the show is about the contestants. I’ve always found the contestants on a game show to be more interesting than the actual game. It’s kind of like ‘Family Feud.’ It’s always funny watching Steve (Harvey) talk to people to see what kind of reactions and answers he gets.”

Leno’s a natural fit to host “You Bet Your Life,” as not only does the former talk show host genuinely find people fascinating, but he also has plenty of experience making them feel comfortable on air. This comes in handy when Leno tries to help contestants discover a secret word that Eubanks shared before they came out onstage, sometimes asking them personal questions that might lead to one of them saying the word and splitting an extra $500 cash prize. “The whole 22 years we went out on the streets and talked to people for Jaywalking, we never had anybody say, ‘You made me look like a fool,’” Leno said. “We would ask people, ‘Are you okay with this?’ and they were willing to laugh at themselves. They realized they had made a mistake or given a funny answer. My favorite question was we asked people how Mount Rushmore was formed and more than one person said erosion. You go, really? You think millions of years of wind and rain picked four presidents, four of our greatest presidents? I mean, what are the odds of that? Then, they start to realize, oh no, I guess that’s not right. It’s all about figuring out how to draw humor from people without humiliating or degrading them.” For those interested in auditioning for “You Bet Your Life,” people can visit the show’s website for details on how to apply. Allegiant has partnered with the program not only to provide airfare for vacation packages contestants can win, but also to fly contestants out to California to be on it.

A visit to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida is an opportunity to see a world-class art collection, two circus museums, a palatial VenetianGothic mansion, an 18th-century Italian theater and an arboretum—all in one place! THE ADVENTURE BEGINS The Ringling has developed a comprehensive website through which interested parties may purchase tickets, preview the collection, see upcoming events and performances or ask questions. ringling.org Arriving at the campus is a breeze thanks to free parking in a lot immediately across the street from the museum’s entrance. The original, pink-hued gatehouse serves as a perfect starting point. Pro Tip: The Ringling is walking distance from SRQ Airport, and makes for a perfect stop during a layover or preflight. The Ringling, certified as a Level II arboretum, is famous for its incredible banyan trees. A THEATER FIT FOR A QUEEN Upon entry, the McKay Visitors Pavilion provides the opportunity to explore an eclectic and colorful glass collection housed in the Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion. Nearby, the Historic Asolo Theater serves as a gorgeous performance hall for The Ringling’s programs and the On-Screen Film series. The theater’s evolution began in the 15th century with Caterina Cornaro, the Queen of Cyprus. In 1798, architect Antonio Locatelli created the theater in the great hall of Caterina’s palace. The Asolo Theater, purchased by the museum’s first director, A. Everett Austin, Jr. in 1949, was installed in its current home in 2006.

Circus Model must be seen to be believed, and the “Greatest Show on Earth” mural celebrates the entertainment that has delighted packed houses in great cities and small towns across America for generations. Parade wagons, posters, glittering costumes and the cannon that shot daring performers through the air line the halls of this hallowed institution. And soon, an exciting new interactive gallery experience, “The Greatest Show on Earth” will open in early 2022! Pro Tip: Don’t miss seeing The Wisconsin! Worthy of the man called the “King of the Circus,” the custom Pullman car gives a glimpse into how the Ringlings traveled in impeccable style. THE PALACE OF THE CIRCUS KING Prepare for your breath to be taken away as you approach the incredible Ca’d’Zan mansion. Ca’d’Zan means “House of John” in Venetian dialect. Completed in 1926 at $1.5 million (over $21 million in today’s dollars), the 36,000 square-foot house sits on Sarasota Bay, is five stories tall and has a full basement (a rarity in Florida)! Pretend that you are a guest at one of John and Mable’s celebrity-filled parties and peruse the ballroom, grand hall and elegant dining room. Check out the humongous kitchen and don’t miss the gorgeous marble waterfront terrace. Ca’ d’Zan is the grandest mansion on Florida’s Suncoast and stands as one of America’s architectural treasures.

John Ringling was a man who understood the value of spectacle and loved to awe a crowd. His art museum does just that! The Ringling, the State Art Museum of Florida, is home to one of the preeminent art and cultural collections in the U.S. The museum is a U-shaped pink palace with 21 original galleries that house Ringling’s treasure trove of paintings and art objects, highlighted by a collection of masters that include Velazquez, El Greco, Van Dyck, Veronese, Tiepolo, Gainsborough and Rubens. Contemporary art and special exhibitions can be found in the Searing Wing and Monda Galleries. The Chao Center for Asian Art, housed inside a gigantic jade green cube, hosts a dynamic collection. A giant statue of David keeps watch over the

Museum of Art’s Courtyard, while the gorgeous pink marble loggias are a favorite of influencers and Instagrammers. Pro Tip: Wear comfortable shoes! If you bring a backpack, it must be worn on your front inside the galleries to prevent accidentally backing into the paintings. The dazzling shores of Sarasota, Florida, are home to more than just beautiful beaches and tropical cocktail bars. As the Cultural Coast of Florida, the area is a hub for art and beauty. The Downtown Campus is the only botanical garden in the world dedicated to the display and study of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads and ferns, and other tropical plants. The Historic Spanish Point campus, located south along Little Sarasota Bay, is one of the largest preserves showcasing native Florida plants. VENICE THEATRE From its humble beginnings set in the 1950s, in a borrowed building manned by volunteer staff, The Venice Theatre has come far. Today, it is one of the largest community theaters in the United States with its own beautiful playhouses, a paid professional staff and a roster of touring and local productions. This holiday season, the theater welcomes back “A Christmas Carol” for its 20th year. The production is an original musical adaptation of Dickens’ classic story, following Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Brad Wages) as he reflects on his past, present and potentially shakey future, playing December 10-20. “Ain’t Misbehavin’” follows close behind, running from January 14 to February 6. The Tony award-winning musical follows jazz musician Thomas “Fats” Waller’s rise to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium

Mote Aquarium is home to three adorable otters

and extensive grounds for performance, sculpture, movement classes and other gatherings. Monthly curator talks give new guests and current members insight into current exhibitions on display. From November 27, 2021, to May 15, 2022, the museum will showcase the work of the late Felix Gonzalez-Torres, who used everyday materials, such as lightbulbs, paper and candy, to engage viewers in deeper consideration of intrapersonal and cultural issues. Debuting on the same day, “Judith Linhares: The Artist as Curator” is an exhibition curated by Judith Linhares, showcasing the work of five other artists, handpicked to be included alongside Linhares’ own paintings, journals and more. sarasotaartmuseum.org MOTE MARINE LABORATORY AND AQUARIUM Amazing animals and marine science exhibits offering up-close engagements are available to those who visit Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium. Enclosures feature manatees, sea turtles and otters in recreated habitats. The open water Shark Zone exhibit is home to the only Center for Shark Research designated by the U.S. Congress, as well as tanks of stingrays, a close relative to the shark.

Thomas Edison’s winter home and guest house have been open to the public since 1947

Just a short drive from Fort Myers Beach, vacationers will discover a peaceful place where they can step back in time to celebrate history, science, art and nature: the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Attracting more than 250,000 people from around the world each year, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates is one of the most visited historic home sites in America. Situated along the Caloosahatchee River, the lush grounds offer guests a glimpse into the lives of two of America’s most famous inventors: Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. As visitors stroll through more than 20 acres of botanical gardens restored to their 1929 landscape, they’ll not only get to see the winter homes of Edison and Ford, but also Edison’s guest house, his caretaker’s house, Edison’s study, his swimming pool complex and Ford’s caretaker’s cottage. Nearly all of the furnishings in Edison’s main house and guest house are original to the Edison family, who enjoyed the winter retreat for six decades

before Edison’s widow, Mina, deeded the estate to the City of Fort Myers in 1947. The property also boasts the only site in Florida designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark: the Edison Botanic Research Laboratory. Inside, visitors will find all of Edison, Ford and Harvey Firestone’s original equipment and machinery right where they left it. Outside, they’ll find more than 1,700 plants representing over 400 species from six continents, many of which Edison used in his quest to find a natural source of rubber — the main reason the lab was built in 1928.

The recently renovated Edison Ford Museum is located on site, too, featuring 15,000 square feet of exhibits and artifacts. In addition to showcasing Edison’s favorite invention, the phonograph, the museum has six antique cars on display, including the 1916 Ford Model T that Ford gave Edison for his birthday. Although the Edison and Ford Winter Estates is open year-round for both guided and selfguided tours, there’s arguably no better time to visit the attraction than during its namesake season. The property hosts several special events visitors won’t want to miss, including its Holiday Nights light show through Jan. 2, 2022. A separate admission fee applies for the annual after-hours event, where guests can see the homes and gardens decorated with thousands of lights. Additionally, the property’s free Winter Garden Festival takes place on Feb. 12 and 13, featuring food trucks, live music and more than 40 garden vendors.

In early 2022, Edison’s caretaker’s house will feature a new temporary exhibit. On view from Jan. 14 to May 29, “Sustainable Conceptions” will showcase 2-D and 3-D works of art created from recycled products that highlight Edison and Ford’s efforts to work towards a sustainable future. Although the Green Movement was not popular during their lifetimes, both men recognized the importance of recycling and reusing materials.

The geodesic dome of The Dalí Museum has been the crowning jewel of the Southeastern United States since its construction in 2011. Resting comfortably in St. Petersburg, Florida, on the Tampa Bay waterfront, the structure known only as The Enigma is made up of 1,062 triangular pieces of glass. It stands 75 feet at its tallest point, and houses a spiraling helical staircase — a fitting tribute to the spiraling, enigmatic mind of one of the greatest surrealist artists to have ever lived.

The collection inside, formed by A. Reynolds and Eleanor R. Morse, traces its roots to 1943, when the Morses bought their first Dalí painting, “Daddy Longlegs of the Evening, Hope! (1940)”. This was the first of many acquisitions, which now number at an astounding 300 oil paintings, watercolors and drawings, and more than 2,100 prints, photographs, posters, textiles, sculptures and objects d’art, making the museum one of the most acclaimed collections of a single modern artist in the world, with works in every medium the artist attempted. In addition to the extensive permanent collection of Dalí works, the museum showcases frequent special exhibitions curated from top worldwide collections in the Hough Family Wing. Through Jan. 2, 2022, the museum hosts “The Woman Who Broke Boundaries: Photographer Lee Miller,” focusing on 130 images from Miller’s prolific body of work: portraits of important writers and artists associated with the Surrealist movement in Paris, a small selection of striking self-portraits and images captured during the liberation of Paris and Germany at the end of World War II. Soon after Lee Miller’s exhibit closes, the Dalí plans to debut “Picasso and the Allure of the South,” organized with Musée national Picasso-Paris, on Jan. 29-May 22, 2022. Promising to explore the influence of southern Europe on Picasso’s revolutionary work, the exhibit features many pieces on view for the first time in the U.S., from some of his most creative and prolific artistic periods. It was actually during this time in Europe when Picasso was photographed by Lee Miller, in a picture that will be on display only three weeks prior to his exhibit, in a museum dedicated to their mutual friend. Whether that is a surreal turn of events, or a calculated curation, both are equally fitting for the prestigious Dalí. The exhibits are both exclusive to the Dalí, a point of pride for the museum, which also boasts of a museum store where 85 percent of inventory is only available on their shelves. No trip to Tampa Bay is complete without visiting Ybor City. The only neighborhood on Florida’s west coast designated a National Historic Landmark District, the vibrant Latin Quarter has something for everyone to enjoy. History buffs who want to learn more about the area and its rich cultural heritage will want to stop by the Ybor City Museum. Located in the historic Ferlita Bakery building, the museum features exhibits on the various immigrant groups who settled in the community and how Ybor City earned its reputation as the Cigar Capital of the World. A TAMPA TREASURE PERFECTED Columbia’s Original Cuban Sandwich

Several restaurants in Ybor City may make a good Cuban sandwich, but only one restaurant can say that its Cuban sandwich was named “Best Sandwich in Florida” by Food & Wine Magazine in 2021: The Columbia Restaurant. Founded in 1905 by Cuban immigrant Casimiro Hernandez, Sr., Florida’s oldest restaurant prides itself on using Hernandez’s original 1915 recipe when making its Cuban sandwich. Each sandwich is made precisely the same way, starting with house-baked sugar-glazed ham on the bottom slice of freshly baked Cuban bread. Then comes the mojo-marinated pork, prepared in house, followed by imported Genoa salami with black peppercorns. Atop of that is a layer of Swiss cheese, pickle chips and finally the top slice of the loaf, which is coated with yellow mustard. Priced at $12, Columbia’s Original Cuban Sandwich may only be listed on its lunch menu, but guests can order the sandwich for dinner by request.

Celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2021, the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is the only frostfree native tropical forest and botanical garden in the continental United States. A conservation site for many endangered and threatened flora and fauna native to the Florida Keys, Cuba and the Caribbean, the serene 15-acre attraction gives guests the unique opportunity to experience the Keys’ native biodiversity while learning more about its importance. “Every time I walk the garden, I find something new and marvel at the wonder of nature,” said Misha McRae, executive director of the Key West Botanical Garden Society, which preserves, develops, expands and maintains the historic attraction as an arboretum, botanical garden, cultural heritage museum, wildlife refuge and educational center. “I find that helping the environment via the protection of native habitat is so rewarding.”

The garden features the only salt-free fresh water pond in the Keys as well, which makes it a major migratory stopping point for 208 identified species of Neotropical birds from places as far as South America and Canada. Additionally, it’s home to many rare species of Florida Keys wildlife, including dragonflies, turtles and lizards like the native anole. Visitors can explore the lush grounds on one of 12 self-guided tours that take guests through its nature trails and past several exhibits, including a Cuban chug exhibit that showcases a collection of vessels used to successfully exit Cuba. There’s also a playground for kids to enjoy and two 1 ½-acre butterfly gardens that attract, nurture and protect over 39 species of butterflies throughout the year. Special events are held regularly, too, including a separately ticketed speaker series on relevant conservation issues that takes place on the third Saturday of each month, December through May. Wishes not only help hope and joy to shine through the toughest of circumstances, but can also make a real difference in improving health outcomes for many children. About 77 percent of those wishes involve travel, and since 2012 Allegiant has provided free, nonstop flights for nearly 2,000 wish kids and their families to reach dream destinations across the country — from Florida and California theme parks to sports events, concerts and celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. We’ve also been honored to help design and host special wishes, including a visit to Allegiant’s west coast training center, where prospective pilot Eric flew a full-motion professional flight simulator, and where honorary flight attendant, 5 year-old SJ, handed out snacks to his fellow passengers during his wish trip to Orlando. When the pandemic delayed the fulfillment of wishes involving air travel, Allegiant team members stepped in to help fill the void. Pilots and flight attendants delivered messages of hope and gifts of encouragement to the homes of wish kids in Las Vegas. Administrative staff helped with a functional and beautiful bedroom makeover for 9 year-old wish kid Annay. And, across the country, hundreds

of team members participated in “virtual” walks and fundraisers during this most unusual year. This fall, our team will once again welcome wish kids on board Allegiant flights as they resume travel to fulfill their wishes. TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Throughout all the uncertainty and challenges of the past two years, Allegiant Team members have been on the front lines helping us to continue delivering on our promise of safe, reliable, low-cost travel with a little sunshine. Each month, numerous Team Members are nominated for recognition in going above and beyond and demonstrating their dedication to our customers as well as each other. Below are two recent examples of employees we recognize for their passion and enthusiasm. Lea G, Flight Attendant (Cincinnati, OH- CVG) Lea was scheduled to fly a very special flight chartered to transport Afghan refugees. Although the flight attendants had little notice or understanding of what these flights would entail, Lea understood that there would likely be many children onboard. The day before her trip, Lea went to the store and purchased coloring kits to distribute to the children. Realizing that these children would be confused, exhausted and anxious on these flights, Lea’s kindness and forethought brought smiles and relief to the children and parents alike. Logan J, Stations Area Manager (Medford, OR- MFR) On a recent flight, a passenger who was traveling to Las Vegas to attend the funeral of a loved one checked in a bag at the ticket counter. Unfortunately, on arrival in Las Vegas it was realized that the passenger’s bag was missing. Upon learning of the mishap Logan sprang into action to reunite the passenger and their bag. Logan not only located the bag, but escorted it to Las Vegas to personally deliver to the passenger to ensure they received it before the funeral.
