here’s just something exquisitely special about the sand on Clearwater Beach. It's soft. It's warm. It’s sugar white and, of course, there’s tons of it, literally. Run your toes through it once and you’re hooked; it’s soothing, magical, addictive and awardwinning, making sand the ultimate reason visitors trek here from all over the world. Nearly four miles of wide white beach, warm Gulf of Mexico waters and year-round moderate temperatures add up to perfect conditions for visitors. Choices for lodging are plentiful, from a variety of beachfront resorts with glorious views to off-beach cottages, boutique inns and intimate hotels. No worries if you’ve chosen an off-beach property, the public part of Clearwater Beach will suit your needs perfectly. This action-packed beach offers fun for all with a long fishing pier, kids’ playground, welcome center, refreshment stands and cabana and umbrella rentals. Clearwater Beach celebrates its jaw-dropping sunsets each night with Sunsets at Pier 60 where artisans, craftsmen, buskers and musicians gather to provide entertainment for all against the backsplash of the setting sun. On weekends, PG-rated movies are offered under the stars—free admission but bring your own blanket or beach chair. For more activities, the public Clearwater Beach Marina offers dolphin watching cruises, fishing charters, dinner cruises and watercraft rentals.

park and beach that features hiking trails, picnic tables, a concession, a doggy park, umbrella and cabana rentals and some of the prettiest stretches of sand and sea you can ever imagine. f you’re into craft beers, Florida’s St. Pete/ Clearwater Craft Beer Trail is for you. Take an hour’s drive from Tarpon Springs south to Treasure Island and discover an array of small, independent breweries making specialty beers sure to quench your thirst. Go on a tour and sample beers rated as some of the best in the world by RateBeer.com, an independent site for craft beer recognized as the most accurate source for beer information At Dunedin Brewery, Florida’s oldest craft brewery, try some Red Head Ale or Nitro Stout. Brews here are handcrafted in small batches, 15 barrels at a time. Just around the corner, visit one of the trail’s newest breweries, 7venth Sun. Sample beer sweetened with fresh fruit to cut down on the tartness of a typical German Berliner Weisse-style beer. Beer fans are calling it Florida Weisse! Greg Rapp in Pinellas Park started Rapp Brewing Company 15 years ago. He explained that the craft beer craze in Tampa Bay originated with the Cigar City Brewpub in Tampa and spread across the region. “The home brew community is huge here,” Rapp said. “It’s about people wanting something different other than the regular fizzy, yellow, watery stuff that was being offered.”

Rapp brews everything from lagers, ales and stouts to Belgian and European beers. He said that people who aren’t even beer drinkers come to his brewery. That’s how the craft beer craze is growing.”

DISCOVER TARPON SPRINGS AN ECLECTIC SEASIDE COMMUNITY AS DIVERSE AS IT IS BEAUTIFUL By Sheri Wilken

T

arpon Springs, Florida offers travelers the next best thing to visiting Greece…no passport required!

This historic Gulf Coast city, located just 20 minutes north of Clearwater, is on the National Register Of Historic Places—and for good reason. Tarpon Springs is the oldest community in Pinellas County with a wealth of historic landmark buildings and Victorian homes in the Historic Downtown District. Visitors can learn about the history of Tarpon Springs at the restored Train Depot Museum, home to the Tarpon Springs Historical Society. Downtown is also home to art, antiques, eclectic boutiques and shops, restaurants, bakeries, taverns, a winery and a brewery. Two of the businesses have been in operation for over 100 years!

The Sponge Docks at Tarpon Springs

Within walking distance of the Historic Downtown District and Sponge Docks are Spring Bayou and Craig Park, home of Alma, a six-foot-fourinch striking bronze mermaid sculpture. During the winter months, manatees—a large aquatic relative of the elephant—swim into Spring Bayou looking for warmer waters. Watching manatees, Florida’s state marine mammal, is a favorite pastime for many winter visitors. In addition to its beautiful beaches, Historic Downtown District and world famous Sponge 22

Talk about atmosphere—Rick’s Reef is casual and welcoming with a fabulous Florida beach feel. Most patrons congregate on the spacious covered deck to hang out, chow down and quench a Florida thirst over cold beers or Bloody Marys and margaritas, both house specials. Good eats are definitely found here; owner Rick Myers asserted that his dishes are “freshly made and definitely not microwaved”. Gotta tries include crab-stuffed grouper, twofisted 10-ounce burgers and their delectably creamy Lobster Mac and Cheese. Save room (if you can) for Rick’s famous Key Lime Pie! ricksreefstpetebeach.com

Casual fare salads, flatbreads, wraps and sandwiches are the mainstay of the menu. Harry’s Fish Sandwich is a crowd favorite as is the oh-so-fabulous Garlic Shrimp. Live music at night, a cozy firepit and sensational sunsets make Harry’s worthy of your time. sirata.com/ restaurants/harrys-beach-bar

THROWBACK ATTRACTION: SUNKEN GARDENS STILL A FLORIDA FAVORITE AFTER 100 YEARS By Nancy Foster

T

wo Chilean flamingoes have lived at Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg, a vintage Florida roadside attraction, since 1956. This botanical wonder’s colorful history actually goes back 100 years. Why the name Sunken Gardens? The grounds were adjacent to a below street level shallow lake when avid gardener George Turner Sr. purchased the site in 1903. After draining the lake, he created superb growing conditions for his lush tropical and sub-tropical plantings. Following much urging, he opened his private gardens to the public and charged 25 cents for admission. It wasn’t long thereafter that Sunken Gardens became world famous. In the mid 1900s, people learned about Sunken Gardens from giant billboards strategically placed along U.S. Highway 1 from Maine to Florida. Colorful signs proclaimed how many miles farther it was to ”World Famous Sunken Gardens” and lured tourists as they headed south for winter holidays. The signs are long gone, as is the “World’s Largest Gift Shop”, but much of yesterday’s famed gardens have not changed at all. Over 50,000 plants, shrubs, vines and trees still thrive and the flamingo flock is actually increasing.

strands of lanky bamboo, southern live oaks up to 250 years old and vine-laden shrubs. You may even encounter a wedding party; 175 couples from around the world entered into wedded bliss at the gardens last year. Sunken Gardens, now owned by the City of St. Petersburg, was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and is located a mile north of downtown St. Petersburg at 825 4th St N. Bring your camera; this is truly a photographer’s dream. Find further information at www.stpete.org and allegiant.com for area vacation packages.

Allow two hours to fully appreciate the easily navigable four acres. Take in the earthy scent permeating the grounds as you wind your way through curving pathways. Trek across footbridges spanning pools dotted with lily pads and stocked with giant koi. (Tip: Buy pellet food at the gift shop to feed the koi; your family will love this.) Pause to rest at the limestone Growing Stone Bench and be on the alert for tortoises, snapping turtles, anole and brilliant macaws, cockatoos and amazon parrots. MADE OF STAR STUFF TRAVEL DEEP INSIDE THE UNIVERSE AT THE BISHOP PLANETARIUM By Joel Poiley

H

ow did we come to be on earth? This and other mysteries about the universe and solar system are explored at South Florida Museum’s Bishop Planetarium in Bradenton. As the great astronomer Carl Sagan once said, we are all made of star stuff. You will find out how true that is when you recline your seat and gaze deep into the night sky during

Life: A Cosmic Story, one of six films shown throughout each month. The film takes you inside a plant cell, learning about the process of photosynthesis and the role of DNA. Using real science and cutting-edge technology to create experiences that educate and make you ponder, Passport to the Universe takes audiences on a virtual tour from earth and the Milky Way galaxy to the edge of the universe and back. You’ll feel like you’re flying beneath the rings of Saturn, into the heart of the Orion Nebula and out into the vastness of the universe. “The planetarium is a great asset for the museum because it ties in with the educational program that we have here,” said Communications Manager Jessica Schubick. “The focus is on Florida, but we are looking at life and how life has developed on earth and how we fit in the larger picture as citizens of Florida and the world. We focus on telling stories and this is part of that story.”

The Planetarium dome is home to a galaxy of stars

FLORIDA

You’ll realize how small the human race is after visiting the Bishop Planetarium. However, you’ll be richer for the cosmic experience! For more information, call 941.746.4131 or visit southfloridamuseum.org/ThePlanetarium/ ShowDescriptions.aspx.

The constellation and stars come alive at the Bishop Planetarium

Other shows include Perfect Little Planet, which is geared toward kids, SpacePark 360 and the Rock Hall of Fame, which are only shown on the first Saturday of each month. SpacePark 360 recreates the experience of being on a roller coaster as you traverse the tops of Jupiter's clouds to the icy depths of Neptune's moon Triton. The Rock Hall of Fame is an exciting mix of your favorite classic rock and roll set to cool computer-generated animations on the planetarium’s dome.

Here you can find your own place in the sun. Where palms cast cooling shade on an island beach that’s gently caressed by warm, soothing waves of the Gulf of Mexico. No miles of condos. No towering hotels. Just cozy places to stay that will give you memories forever. And the serenity you’ve been looking for.

BITES OF PUNTA GORDA SOUTHWEST FLORIDA’S NEWEST FOOD ADVENTURE By Gabriele Walkow

A

s part of Southwest Florida Food Tours, the Bites of Punta Gorda Tour is a threehour walking food tour taking visitors through the city’s charming downtown historic district. Perfect for food and history buffs, this tour combines local culture, historical facts and culinary insights into a unique foodie experience. Get an insider’s perspective of the area, taste authentic local flavors and meet and engage with local restaurateurs and fellow food lovers.

The tour, which covers approximately 1.4 miles, unfolds at a relaxed pace and stops frequently— including spending approximately 20 minutes at each of the five designated restaurants. (Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.) Restaurants visited on each tour vary, depending on availability, and include ethnic mom and pop spots, locally loved eateries and some of the area’s best fine dining establishments. All food tastings, the equivalent of a luncheon meal overall, are included in the ticket price. Ice water is available at each tasting but other beverages are not included in the ticket purchase. Southwest Florida Food Tours opened its doors in the fall of 2014 after owners LaVerne and Rick Roberts went on a food tour in Nassau, Bahamas. Inspired, they decided to share the many culinary treasures that Punta Gorda has to offer with people traveling to the area. Southwest Florida Food Tours is now recommended on TripAdvisor. “The local restaurants are excited to be a part of this new adventure,” said LaVerne Roberts, “and are anxious to highlight their signature dishes. We generally recommend taking the tour early during your stay in town to allow enough time to revisit some of your favorite stops later during your trip.

“This tour is also an excellent way to entertain out-of-town guests, celebrate a special occasion or encourage professional team building,” continued Roberts. “And our gift certificates make for a special treat for family and friends.” The $45 per person tickets must be purchased in advance. Tours often sell out so purchasing tickets early to guarantee your desired tour day is recommended. Customized private tours for small and large groups are also available.

harlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands might not be a 24-hour party destination like Las Vegas, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of fun things to keep visitors entertained after watching a beautiful sunset on the beach. A stunning Lake County sunset

A REAL FLORIDA EXPERIENCE SCENIC LAKE COUNTY CHARMS CENTRAL FLORIDA TRAVELERS By Heather Turk

W

hile most people probably think of Orlando’s many theme parks when asked about Central Florida, just a 35-minute drive away visitors will discover a scenic destination unlike any other—beautiful Lake County, Florida. Bordered by the Ocala National Forest to the north and the hills of Clermont to the south, Lake County lives up to its name with more than 1,000 pristine lakes and rivers. Easily accessible via the I-75 to the west and I-4 to the east, this area’s unique terrain is comprised of rolling hills and stunning vistas leading up Sugarloaf Mountain, the most prominent point in the entire state. Not surprisingly, Lake County’s acres of preserves and state parks, not to mention the aforementioned national forest, attract hikers and avid bird watchers eager to see flora and fauna up close. Protected species such as the Florida scrub-jay and gopher tortoise can often be found on the unspoiled lands, particularly at the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail (11490 Monte Vista Road, Clermont), which offers a variety of habitats ranging from sandhill/scrub to wetlands. Visitors can also go bird watching at the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead (20700 County Road 455, Ferndale), which boasts stunning views of Lake Apopka and the Orlando skyline from a 130-foot elevated boardwalk. The 314-acre Palatlakaha Environmental and Agricultural Reserve (4800 University Ave., Leesburg), better known as PEAR Park, also offers some of the best local birding in Lake County as well as several miles of hiking trails. For a more unique perspective of the area’s wildlife, canoeists and kayakers can glide down nine different blueway trails within the areas of the St. Johns River, Golden Triangle and Palatlakaha and Ocklawaha basins thanks to the Lake County Community Blueways Project (paddlelake.com). 36

FLORIDA

Another unique way to soak up the sights is at the Citrus Tower (141 N. U.S. Highway 27, Clermont). A Lake County landmark, guests get a 360-degree view of the surrounding eight-county area from inside a glass-enclosed observation deck that’s 22 stories high. Elevator rides to the top of the tower cost only six dollars for adults and four dollars for kids, making it an affordable activity that families can enjoy together. Those wanting to learn more about Lake County’s rich history should head to the Lake County Historical Society Museum (317 W. Main St., Tavares). Located on the first floor of the Lake County Historic Courthouse, the museum offers an exciting and informative view of Lake County’s history through exhibits that change monthly. History buffs will want to check out the Presidents Hall of Fame (123 US Highway 27, Clermont), too, which features one-of-a-kind exhibits on all 44 presidents as well as detailed replicas of the White House, Oval Office and State Dining Room. There’s also a collection of White House

ornaments and Christmas cards on display and a replica of the Blue Room state parlor during Christmas, for those in a festive frame of mind. Lake County boasts a wealth of unique gift ideas thanks to its many antique malls, second-hand boutiques and thrift shops. Visitors can browse through bargain wares and purchase locally grown vegetables, fruits and plants at the Lake County Farmers’ & Flea Market (2101 County Road 452, Eustis), held Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Discover rare treasures at Through The Years Vintage Market (102 E. Alfred St., Tavares), a unique shopping experience located inside a twostory home. Shop some of the best antiques and second-hand goods around at Renninger’s Twin Markets (20651 U.S. Highway 441, Mount Dora).

After working up a hunger exploring, visitors are sure to find something for every palate at one of Lake County’s delectable restaurants. Guests can dig in to a succulent burger like the flavorful Blueberry & Brie Burger at The Crooked Spoon Gastropub (200 Citrus Tower Blvd., Clermont) or enjoy savory steak and seafood at Pisces Rising (239 W. Fourth Ave., Mount Dora), a charming restaurant located in a 1920s bungalow-style home overlooking Lake Dora. Or course, no trip to the area would be complete without trying Yalaha Bakery’s (8210 County Road 48, Yalaha) authentic German bread and pastries or the fabulous fried chicken at the Mason Jar (37534 State Road 19, Umatilla).

Lake County is also home to Florida’s largest premium winery, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards (19239 U.S. Highway 27 North, Clermont), where guests can take a tour and sample wines made from locally grown muscadine grapes. Beer enthusiasts can sip an in-house brewed beer at Mount Dora Brewing’s Rocking Rabbit Brewery (405 S. Highland St., Mount Dora) while listening to live music every Friday and Saturday night. UNIVERSAL ORLANDO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS By Sandra Chambers

ince opening June 7, 1990, Universal Orlando has transformed into a vacation destination featuring two theme parks, four on-site hotels and the 30-acre CityWalk entertainment complex. From the beginning, Universal Studios, along with Academy Award-winning producer/director Steven Speilberg as creative consultant, set out to change the way people perceived theme park entertainment by inviting guests to ride the movies. The park has remained true to its original vision with its main attractions still based on pop culture icons, Hollywood blockbusters and hit television shows.

Volcano Bay, scheduled to open in 2017, will become Universal's third theme park and will offer a new generation of water parks for the entire family. Thrilling immersive attractions along with relaxing, peaceful tropical islands will change the perception of water parks. Universal Orlando has also announced future plans to bring the world of Nintendo to life, based on compelling stories and characters and innovative technology. “For 25 years, Universal Orlando has created incredible experiences that place guests in the heart of powerful stories and adventures," said Kristen Clark, Public Relations Manager at Universal Orlando Resort. "In the past five years alone, we have launched 18 new entertainment experiences across our entire destination including new attractions, a new hotel, new restaurants and spectacular shows and parades.”

Even more all new experiences are on the way. Coming summer of 2016, the park's fifth themed hotel, Loews Sapphire Falls, will open along with Skull Island: Reign of Kong, a groundbreaking attraction in Islands of Adventure. THE SANFORD RIVERWALK TRAIL A RECREATIONAL GEM By Gabriele Walkow

A

fter your Allegiant flight into the Orlando Sanford International Airport, a stroll on the Sanford RiverWalk Trail, which follows the southern shoreline of picturesque Lake Monroe, might be in order. Stretch your legs and take in the sights and sounds of one of the most scenic paved trails in Central Florida.

Photo of RiverWalk aerial and golden sunrise by JP Photography; Nature at it's finest by Kathy Urbach

The first segment of the RiverWalk Trail, between Mellonville Avenue and French Avenue, was built in 2004 and was an immediate success. Thousands of joggers, walkers and cyclists started putting this recreational trail to good use. Annual festivals and arts shows by the City of Sanford also began springing up along the RiverWalk.

See nature at its finestÂ

Then in early 2015, to the delight of residents and visitors alike, a new trail extension was officially opened. The RiverWalk Trail now runs nearly two miles between Mellonville Avenue in downtown Sanford to the Central Florida Regional Hospital. Covered benches, large boulders, decorative lights and newly planted palm trees line the extension. This popular recreational trail connects Lake Monroe with Wayside Park, Log Cabin Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial Park, Fort Mellon Park, Sanford City Hall, Seminole County Courthouse, Sanford Museum and the fun restaurants, bars and shops of Sanford. Formed in 1877, historic downtown Sanford still retains the charm and beauty of a bygone era. Explore unique shops offering treasured antiques, books, musical instruments, vintage clothing and more. Visit gorgeous galleries and sample locally owned eateries. Treat your taste buds to flavors ranging from American Bistro to Continental, Soul to Seafood, Greek to German cuisines. Then, head back to the RiverWalk to observe nature at its finest and enjoy a beautiful sunset over Lake Monroe. With the first extension to the hospital completed, the next phase is to lengthen the trail past the Central Florida Zoo to an existing trail, connecting the RiverWalk to the Seminole and the Volusia County trail system as well as the Coastto-Coast Trail. The RiverWalk will then be part of a lengthy trail network stretching across Florida!

A golden sunrise lights up the RiverWalk

So, put on your sneakers, hop on your bike or grab your in-line skates and head to the Sanford RiverWalk Trail for some recreational fun. The trail is ADA accessible and parking is readily available at certain locations along the way. ith the moniker Paris of the South, Asheville, N.C. has become a hotspot for lively music, arts and crafts, upscale shopping and farm-to-table restaurants. The downtown area is compact and easily explored on foot. Visitors can mosey through town on their own or follow the 1.7mile Urban Trail, which includes 30 artworks that depict various aspects of the city's heritage. Forget the Yellow Brick Road and follow the pink granite markers embedded in the sidewalk!

End your day with dinner at the Nightbell Restaurant & Lounge located in a redesigned second floor warehouse. Drawing its name from days gone by when a customer rang the night bell for an after-hour entrance, the restaurant has gained a reputation for its unique bites, small plates, desserts and cocktails. For more info visit exploreasheville.com.

For those who grew up in the era of Five & Dime stores, the historically restored Woolworth Building offers a touch of nostalgia with its old-fashioned soda fountain. It's also Asheville's largest venue for local fine arts and crafts. The dog-friendly Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar is a mandatory stop on your downtown tour. Asheville's downtown is replete with re-purposed buildings such as the Grove Park Arcade, one of Asheville's leading commercial buildings in the 1930s. The building reopened in 2002 after a five-year renovation and now houses offices and luxury apartments on its upper floors and a mix of locally owned shops, galleries and restaurants on the ground floor.

Historic Places. An old-time mercantile emporium restored to its 1940s heyday, the store was once known for carrying everything from cradles to caskets. Today it still carries a wide variety of goods from outdoor equipment to clothing, collectibles and colorful barrels of old-fashioned candy.

Serena, 17 Hodgkin lymphoma “I wish to learn how to surf in Hawaii.”

ALLEGIANT CELEBRATES MAKE-A-WISH® MILESTONE ALLEGIANT’S 300TH MAKE-A-WISH FLIGHT JETS TO HONOLULU

O

n July 6, 2015, Make-A-Wish® wish kid Serena, age 17, and her family traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii for her wish to learn how to surf! Serena was Allegiant’s 300th wish kid that we’ve flown since our relationship with Make-A-Wish began in 2012. In 2014 alone, more than 150 wish kids and their families were flown by Allegiant to their wish destination!

254,000 wishes since its inception in 1980; more than 14,200 wishes in 2014 alone. Visit Make-A-Wish at wish.org to learn more. To learn how you can help make travel wishes come true, visit allegiant.com/maw. Thank you, Serena, for allowing Allegiant to be a part of your wish experience!

The family was greeted at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas for a special wish sendoff including large balloons that spelled out SURF’S UP SERENA. Serena’s wish to travel to Hawaii to learn how to surf was coming true! She and her family also spent the week in Honolulu snorkeling and enjoying the white sand beaches of Hawaii. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish come true has a positive impact on the health of the children. Kids say that wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Headquartered in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 27,000 volunteers, Make-AWish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 37 minutes. It has granted more than 56

Greg and Mary Jo on their wedding day in Las Vegas

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ALLEGIANT GRANTS VEGAS WEDDING WISH TO TWO FLORIDA TEAM MEMBERS

E

ach holiday season, Allegiant hosts a wish-granting program for Team Members where one Team Member can make a wish for another Team Member to come true. The program has granted wishes from covering car payments to a new yoga mat. Last holiday season a Florida Team Member wished that her fellow co-workers–Greg and Mary Jo–could have their wedding paid for in Las Vegas. They have been in a relationship for years and have a beautiful baby girl together. This September, their wish came true! We caught up with Greg (G) and Mary Jo (MJ) right after their nuptials at the Chapel of the Flowers (www.littlechapel.com).

Q: How long have you been working for Allegiant? MJ: I have been with Allegiant for a little over eight years. G: Almost six years.

Q: What is your role at Allegiant?

MJ: I am the Inflight Supervisor at the St. Petersburg (PIE) base. I supervise over 100 flight attendants at the base and I am there to provide support during the daily operation. G: Operations Lead in PIE. I work in the operations department. I am in charge of weight-and-balance for the aircraft as well as the scheduling and flow of the aircraft arriving into and departing from our base.

most flights are a family's dream coming true as they are going to all of the great destinations we offer and serve.

Q: What did you think when you were told that a fellow Team Member wished for you guys to get MARRIED?! MJ: I felt honored that someone took the time to submit such a wonderful request for us. I was definitely shocked! G: It was an amazing surprise, and I was so excited to know that someone on the team spent the time to write a wish for my family and me.

Q: In your many years with Allegiant, what has been one of your favorite moments?

MJ: My favorite moments with Allegiant have definitely been the opportunities that I have been given. From not knowing anything about an airplane to being in my current position, I am grateful for the knowledge and career advancement opportunities during the past eight years. G: As an Operations Agent, my favorite moments would have to be the time that I get to spend with each and every passenger; hearing about their exciting adventures that we all help to make possible, is what it is all about.

Q: What about your job gets you excited to go to work?

MJ: I get excited knowing that you never know what the day will bring. Each day provides new challenges and opportunities to help our customers and truly make a difference. G: The overall functionality of progress excites me the most. I am most happy at work knowing that 60
