They offer a fun and convenient way for visitors to ride in open-air comfort to access the shops, dining and beach, and courteous drivers are quick to provide tips and advice for those unfamiliar with the hot spots. Finding the trolley is easy; colorful sunburst trolley marker signs indicate pick-up stops, and a mobile app tracks estimated arrival time. Expanded service now includes a scenic coastal route, excursions to nearby Tarpon Springs and Safety Harbor, and the PSTA countywide bus line. For a $5 investment you can hop on and off all day. clearwaterjolleytrolley.com

T

wo naturally beautiful state parks, undiscovered by many but a cherished find for some visitors, are a mere 12 mile drive north of Clearwater Beach and within 90 minutes from anywhere in West Central Florida. Access to both of these award-winning beach destinations is through Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin.

HONEYMOON ISLAND Four miles of sugar-white beach, winding nature trails and lush picnic spots highlight this 385acre expanse of unspoiled Florida beauty. Under the jurisdiction of the Florida State Parks system, Honeymoon Island has recently undergone extensive beach renourishment, making it perfect for year-round shelling, swimming, fishing and snorkeling. Services include showers and rentals for beach chairs, umbrellas and kayaks. Honeymoon Island is also one of Florida’s premier beach wedding destinations. Get married with your toes in the sand and enjoy a reception under the stars or in an indoor/ outdoor pavilion with stunning beach views! Two beach-casual eateries offer al fresco dining surrounded by unspoiled beauty. Cafe Honeymoon and nearby South Beach Pavilion Cafe feature casual menu items such as a succulent Lobster Roll and tangy Fish Tacos. Eat under umbrellaed deck tables or roam the island for a quiet picnic spot. Beer and

wine are available but must be consumed on premises. Stay for a blazing sunset but remember to leave at dusk, as Honeymoon Island is open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown. romantichoneymoonisland.com

CALADESI ISLAND A destructive hurricane in 1921 split the landmass of present-day Honeymoon Island in two, creating what is known today as Caladesi Island State Park. Visitors gain access via a 20-minute ferry ride over the waters of St. Joseph Sound with the Caladesi Island Ferry (current price is $14 per adult), which runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 600-acre island, flanked by a dense mangrove swamp, is thick with Florida slash pines and native trees and plants, and is a natural habitat for tern, plover, osprey and other seabirds. Cafe Caladesi sells lunch items, cold beverages, ice cream and souvenirs. Railed boardwalks and hiking trails lead to beaches so pure and pristine that many consider this paradise found and do not want to leave on the last ferry! floridastateparks.org Current admission to both parks is $8 per vehicle (limit 2 to 8 people per vehicle). While overnight accommodations are not available, area lodging packages can be found at Allegiant.com.

Boasting close to 100 jaw-dropping murals, the city of St. Petersburg is quickly becoming a work of art itself. That rare city that encourages artists to take to the streets to create their latest masterpiece, St. Petersburg even holds an annual event that pairs artists from around the world with downtown canvases to paint their next mural. Part of the St. Petersburg Festival (SPF16) celebrating the arts throughout September, the Shine Mural Festival takes place Sept. 1-10 and everyone can watch as artists transform ordinary walls and sides of buildings into genuine works of art.

Of course, visitors can always check out St. Petersburg’s many murals on their own while on vacation, with several can’t-miss pieces located in the Edge District and three murals recently added to the city’s historic AfricanAmerican district, Deuces Live. For more on St. Petersburg’s thriving arts scene, visit stpeteartsalliance.org.

Go to shineonstpete.com to learn more about the artists chosen to create this year’s murals and see where they will be painting. Bike and trolley tours will be available, for a nominal fee, to see the pieces once they are near completion. This year’s festival will also feature a mural painted on the road at the intersection of Central Avenue and 5th Street, which will be completed the week after Labor Day. Additionally, art enthusiasts can see some of the city’s murals during a Mural Walking Tour in the Central Arts District. Held every Saturday at 10 a.m., the hour-and-a-half tour starts at Florida CraftArt and spans four blocks. Participants will see and hear the stories behind 36 murals during the tour, with three or four more being added after the Shine Mural Festival. Popular murals highlighted include a piece by Los Angeles-based graffiti artist Shark Toof, of a shark that people like to pose under, and “Lizard King,” a tribute to Jim Morrison that was 26

lorida’s Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands’ dining scene has flourished in recent years thanks to several delectable developments. From new restaurants opening their doors to familiar favorites giving diners even more to love, foodies are sure to relish these culinary changes.

FARLOW’S ON THE WATER

A locals’ favorite since September 2003, this Englewood eatery recently underwent a $1.4 million renovation and reopened with an expanded dining room, kitchen and lushly landscaped tropical patio that’s nearly twice the size of the original. While the remodel gave the venue a fresh new look, one thing that didn’t change is Farlow’s mouthwatering menu of Caribbean fare with a Southern twist, available for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. The delicious Crab Stuffed Portabella Mushroom marinated for 24 hours in olive oil and Modena balsamic vinegar and topped with blue crab stuffing and provolone cheese is a must, as is Farlow’s signature St. Croix Seafood Pie for dinner: Caribbean lobster, shrimp and scallops in a creamy white wine lobster sauce served in a puff pastry. farlowsonthewater.com

LEROY’S SOUTHERN KITCHEN & BAR Celebrating its first anniversary in September, this relaxed Punta Gorda restaurant was recently named Best New Restaurant by Harbor Style magazine. Serving regional Southern cuisine, including Cajun/Creole dishes and traditional Deep South and coastal Carolina specialties, guests can dig in to such signature favorites as the buttermilk fried chicken or pork and sweet corn pancakes while sipping a Southern whiskey or bourbon from the bar’s eclectic spirits menu. Be sure to try the Brunch Shrimp & Grits made with fried Gulf pink shrimp, Anson Mills grits, tasso gravy and fried egg. In addition to serving lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, Sunday

Easily accessible via I-75 to the west and I-4 to the east, this area’s unique geography is comprised of rolling hills, stunning vistas and undisturbed preserves ideal for wildlife watching. Offering field trips to birding hotspots and wildflower sanctuaries, and bringing some the nation's top nature experts to the area, Lake County is hosting the event at the 64-acre Venetian Gardens (201 E. Dixie Ave., Leesburg), an ideal bird watching location on the western shore of Lake Harris.

HAUNTED HISTORY DOWNTOWN SANFORD’S MANY SPIRITS AWAIT ON A GUIDED GHOST TOUR By Heather Turk

I

n a historic city like Sanford, Fla. it’s not uncommon to hear people tell stories about ghostly encounters—or at least encounters “a friend of a friend” had. Whether or not any of the tales are true, it’s always fun to visit a haunted location to see if spirits will turn up, especially during the most spooktacular time of the year: Halloween.

Wop’s Hops Brewing Company is the sixth most haunted building in Central Florida 44

FLORIDA

While children are welcome on both tours some stories may be too scary for younger guests, so parental discretion is advised. After all, there’s nothing scarier than a child who’s afraid to go to sleep at night! For more information on Sanford Ghost Tours, visit hauntedsanford.com and for more on Limo Cycle Tours’ Ghost Tours, visit limocycle.com/ ghost-tours.

For those who aren’t brave enough to venture off to a site of spiritual activity alone, Sanford offers year-round guided ghost tours. Sanford Ghost Tours’ Historical Tour offers a Friday night walking excursion through the historic district of downtown Sanford, from 3rd Street to Lake Monroe, for up to 20 people. Not only will guests see historic buildings, the waterfront and back alleys rarely traveled by tourists during the 90-minute tour, but they’ll also hear about the history of Sanford, the ghostly remains of its former citizens and stories handed down from generations of people living in the area. According to local and international mediums, one of the stops on the tour—Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café—is home to at least two ghosts (an older man and a young girl) who work in tandem to make their presence known.

Limo Cycle Tours offers Ghost Tours for private parties of six to 15 people Tuesday through Sunday, with plans to sell individual tickets for its Wednesday night tour. Best described as a 2-hour ghost story pub tour, guests pedal through downtown Sanford’s historic district while hearing and sharing their own ghost stories—stopping along the riverfront and at two to three known haunted sites to search for spirits using the K2 meters provided. Although stops vary, frequently visited venues include The Smiling Bison restaurant, home to two spirits named Adam and Michael who don’t particularly like each other, and the sixth most haunted building in Central Florida—Wop’s Hops Brewing Company—where five spirits have been known to roam.

ALLEGIANT

SPOTLIGHT

Tulsi Bhattarai, Flight Attendant, Orlando HAROLD “TIM” WRIGHT

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT TULSI BHATTARAI, FLIGHT ATTENDANT, ORLANDO By Kerry McGee

W

e are proud to have a diverse work group who continuously help to make travel safe and affordable for our travelers. Orlando-based flight attendant Tulsi Bhattarai dreamed of being a flight attendant since she was a little girl. Coming from a refugee camp in Nepal, Tulsi has come a long way to achieve that dream.

Sunseeker: What made you want to become a flight attendant? Tulsi: Every time that I heard the sound of a plane flying in the sky, I would stare at it until it vanished in the horizon. As a poor refugee girl, I used to wonder how it would feel to fly. Life was still a struggle once I arrived in the U.S. with my family. I wanted to leave for school, but I had to support my parents and younger brother so I wasn’t able to leave home. Eventually, I bought them a new house in Pittsburgh and was able to leave to fulfil my dream of flying. Flying in an airplane is such a luxury. In the camp (in Nepal), I couldn't even imagine riding in a car, and now I am living a life that I had only dreamed of and worked hard for. I’m so happy that I never gave up. Sunseeker: How long have you been working for Allegiant? Tulsi: I’ve been with Allegiant for a little over a year now. Before Allegiant, I had completed a flight attendant course in early 2015 for a different carrier, but was told that I wasn’t qualified because of my Nepalese accent. I didn’t get discouraged and I continued working to reach my goal. A couple of months later, I finally got my dream job at Allegiant! Sunseeker: What is your role with Allegiant? Tell us more about what you do. Tulsi: As a flight attendant, I'm responsible for our travelers' safety while helping to make their flight enjoyable. I love being able to travel and work with great people every day. The best part is when our travelers remember their flight 60

crew from previous flights because we made sure to make their experience enjoyable. Sunseeker: What about your job gets you excited to go to work? Tulsi: I meet so many people from different places, it makes each day different. I especially love getting to meet and talk with first-time fliers. Their excitement to get on the plane reminds me of the times when I was dreaming of being a flight attendant. Sunseeker: Out of all of Allegiant’s amazing destinations, which is your favorite? Tulsi: I loved being able to visit my family in Pittsburgh. I’ve also been able to travel to many other exciting places since becoming a flight attendant, including New York City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Dominican Republic and Miami. I'm very lucky to have this job. Sunseeker: Is there a special memory from working at Allegiant thus far you would like to share with our readers? Tulsi: On a flight from Belleville, Illinois (BLV) to Orlando/Sanford, Florida (SFB), a woman handed me a note and a gift bag requesting that I read it on the microphone. It was a note from “Mickey Mouse” to her five-year-old daughter. I read the note and gave her the gift and she was thrilled! All the other passengers seemed amazed how we went out of our way to help make her trip memorable. Sunseeker: If you could travel anywhere in the United States on vacation, where would you go and why? Tulsi: I would go to the Grand Canyon because I want to experience more of America’s breathtaking views! Sunseeker: Do you have a “locals” tip for Allegiant travelers going to the Orlando area? Tulsi: I would definitely recommend the historical Sanford downtown tour!

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR

VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.
