Their forward-thinking restaurants have ushered in a new crop of celebrity chefs— Masaharu Morimoto, Rick Bayless and Guy Fieri, to name a few—all looking to test their chops on Mickey Mouse town.

The food, describes Chef Bayless, is a greatest hits of favorites from his Chicago restaurants. While the street-fare inspired carne asada with roasted poblanos, refried black beans and all the fixin’s might be a fan favorite, don’t overlook the Chicken in Oaxacan Mole—a blend of flavors from cocoa to red chilis that’s unlike anything in the world. LA FIORENTINA
Serving an assortment of well-marbled Aberdeen Angus steaks from Greeley, Colo., for dinner, this elegant Italian steakhouse in Punta Gorda is owned by the same people who own the popular Village Fish Market & Restaurant in Fishermen’s Village. Guests can choose from a variety of lightly seasoned steaks cooked on a flame grill, like the flavorful Steak Pizzaiola topped with peppers, tomatoes, capers and fresh herbs. Of course, given the restaurant’s name, which means “The Porterhouse” in Italian, no trip is complete without trying the signature Porterhouse “Bistecca Fiorentina.” On Monday and Tuesday nights, diners can even enjoy live jazz music with their meal. thefiorentina.com
PRIME SERIOUS STEAK
A steakhouse that lives up to its name, this Port Charlotte chophouse is known for its awardwinning, corn-fed Iowa beef. All steaks are aged on premises for a minimum of 28 days and then hand cut daily in its butcher shop,

which offers an array of cuts and sizes and custom orders for any cut of beef 16 ounces or larger. Mouthwatering marinated steaks are available, too, including the 14-ounce Kansas City Strip, glazed with the restaurant’s signature steak sauce, and the “Drunken” Sirloin: an 8- or 10-ounce Chairman’s Reserve sirloin steak that’s marinated overnight in hard cider. primeserioussteak.com
VISANI
The steaks at this Port Charlotte comedy club are no laughing matter. Served inside a 6,000-square-foot castle, the Upper Choice Black Angus steaks are fit for royalty, hand cut daily and charbroiled over hickory wood with a secret blend of herbs and spices. Favorites include the Bacon Sirloin Gorgonzola—a 6-ounce sirloin medallion wrapped with hickory bacon, grilled to perfection and finished with melted Gorgonzola, a touch of homemade Marsala sauce and sautéed mushrooms—and the hearty 18-ounce King Rib Eye. On most nights, guests can also enjoy performances by some of the nation’s funniest comedians during or after their dinner. Upcoming headliners include “Last Comic Standing” alumnus Dave Landau with Matt Holt Aug. 22 through 25 and veteran comedienne Maryellen Hooper Aug. 29 through Sept. 1. visani.net

Peace River Beer Company brews a wide variety of beers
AN IDEA THAT’S BEEN BREWING FOR YEARS NEW PUNTA GORDA BREWERY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY By Heather Turk
P
eace River Beer Company may have only opened in Punta Gorda this past December, but the idea behind it has been brewing for almost six years. Created by the founders of Bury Me Brewing in Fort Myers—Barry Schrayer, Sarasak Wichitsakulrat, Chollathorn Nakapraving and William Vaughan—Peace River Beer Company was originally conceived when Vaughan first moved to Punta Gorda. While driving to Tampa to visit what was the closest breweries at the time, Vaughan and his wife crossed the bridge over Peace River, and Vaughan thought to himself, “That would be a great name for a brewery—the Peace River Beer Company!” Last year when the quartet decided to look for a larger building in the area that could accommodate their original 4,000-squarefoot brewery’s growth, they came across a 7,800-square-foot building in Punta Gorda. Rather than move Bury Me Brewing to the new location, however, they decided to multi-brand, and Peace River Beer Company was born.
The brewery also boasts a large production space in the back of the building that’s able to accommodate a 15-barrel capacity brewhouse, 22

a fermentation area, a barrel aging area, a refrigeration area and a future canning system. Tours of the facility are available by request. To be as inviting as possible, Peace River Beer Company is both kid and dog friendly, offering underage guests Sprecher craft sodas to sip and plenty of board games to enjoy. Although the brewery doesn’t currently have a kitchen, guests are welcome to bring food with them if they like or can check out the brewery’s Facebook page to see when local food trucks will be on site. Live entertainment will also be offered in the future. Peace River Beer Company, located at 1732 Steadley Avenue, is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight. peaceriver.beer

Currently able to seat approximately 75 to 100 guests in its tasting room, with plans to create an outdoor space to accommodate even more seating, Peace River Beer Company has 20 beers and hard ciders on tap. Guests will find a wide variety of styles to choose from— everything from IPAs to milk stouts—including four to six beers from its sister brewery. While none of the options disappoint, Peace River Beer Company’s Irish red ale, Guru, is easily the brewery’s best seller and comes highly recommended by Vaughan.

hen John Ringling and his brother Charles moved their circus winter headquarters to Sarasota, over 90 years ago, they started something important and enduring. The influence of the circus brought a boom to Sarasota and to this day, the seaside city embraces its circus heritage. Modern-day visitors to the Sarasota, area can capture the excitement of the circus’ past and present during their visit.
VENICE, FLA.
To first learn about the profound influence Ringling had on the region, start in the town of Venice. The Ringling Circus moved their winter headquarters from Sarasota to Venice in 1959. It was also once the site of a renowned clown school. At the Venice Depot, a statue immortalizes Gunther Gebel-Williams, a Venice performer who, in 1969 became recognized as “the greatest animal trainer of all time.”

Nearby, the aptly named Circus Bridge provided passage for the animals and equipment from 1960 to 1992. On the old circus grounds, famed circus veteran Tito Gaona now operates his Flying Trapeze Academy (titogaona.com) to teach circus arts to kids and adults alike.
THE RINGLING MUSEUMS
John Ringling and his wife Mable traveled throughout Europe and collected many pieces of fine art, which are displayed at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. You will also want to visit their spectacular mansion that they built on Sarasota Bay. Modeled after Italian palaces, Ringling named his spectacular residence, Ca d’Zan, or “House of John” in Italian. Visitors can tour the Ringling Art Museum, the Gilded-Age home, the grounds and museums. The Ringling Circus Museum holds relics of the era, including decorative bandwagons and the Ringling’s’ 79-foot, 1905 luxury railroad car. Next to the museum, the Tibbals Learning Center pays further tribute to the Greatest Show on Earth with a 3,800-square-foot miniature model of the circus. The largest such model in the world, its multisensory experience recreates the sights and sounds of the operation, culminating with the three-ring performance under the Big Top. ringling.org
CIRCUS ARTS CONSERVATORY
The Circus Arts Conservatory is committed to preserving Sarasota’s circus heritage. Under the umbrella of the Circus Arts Conservatory, Circus Sarasota and the Sailor Circus perform throughout the year. Sailor Circus students, ages 8 to 18, put on two annual performances under a one-ring Big Top in mid-town. The Conservatory hosts a kid’s summer camp with performances at The Ringling and other venues, and approximately 80% of all ticket revenue supports outreach programs serving children and the elderly. circusarts.org SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

llegiant passengers visiting Clearwater Beach Sept. 14 through 23 are in for a tasty treat, as one of the area’s most popular annual events will be returning for its ninth year. Typically held in late May, Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week will be taking place in September this year for the first time ever. While normally the culinary celebration is held in conjunction with Clearwater Beach Taste Fest, this year the participating restaurants decided to separate the events and hold Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week in late summer/early fall instead to help boost sales and give foodies something exciting to enjoy during what‘s usually a less busy time of year for travelers. The delectable 10-day affair gives guests a taste of some of the area’s finest restaurants as they compete for “Best of” awards in a variety of categories. Locals and visitors alike can indulge in special prix fixe dinner menus at participating restaurants for just $15 to $35, with some establishments offering special prix fixe lunch menus, too, priced from $10 to $15. After sampling each venue’s fine fare, diners will vote on their experience by filling out a ballot on what dishes/restaurants they thought were the best. Not only will the ballots be tallied to determine which restaurants are truly tops with taste buds, but all entries received will also be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including a two-night stay at Shephard’s Beach Resort! Additional prizes given away in previous years included round-trip airfare to return to Clearwater Beach and gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses. Last year, diners voted Ocean Hai at Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach Best Overall Experience, with Salty’s Island Bar & Grille placing second and Surfside Taphouse placing third. hen visiting a family-friendly vacation destination like Clearwater Beach, Fla., it should come as no surprise that several restaurants in the area offer kids’ menus for their younger guests to enjoy. While each meal may not come with a free toy, the kids’ menus at these local favorites know how to build a happy meal all their own, complete with waterfront views you won’t find at most McDonald’s!
BADFINS FOOD + BREW Although best known for its selection of craft beers on tap, this casual restaurant caters to guests of all ages. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see a local soccer team stop by after a
game to enjoy some hand-spun milkshakes topped with cereal like Fruity Pebbles or Reese’s Puffs. While adults dine on the restaurant’s savory seafood selections and mouth watering Mexican fare, children ages 10 and younger can enjoy an item from the kids’ menu, like the popular Chicken Nugz that come with a drink and fresh fruit or waffle fries. To keep kids entertained, each kids’ menu features drawings by local artist Chad Mize to color. Additionally, the restaurant has synthetic grass out front that’s perfect for playing on and a social media interactive wall where children can hold up fun signs. badfins.com

Located across from the playground at Pier 60 Park, this seafood staple offers children ages 12 and younger a wide variety of dishes to choose from on its “Little Crab Menu”—everything from grilled fish to alfredo pasta. The back of each menu also has a picture search for kids to enjoy, offering something a little different than coloring to keep children occupied until their meal (which also includes a drink and a side). Yummy strawberry and coconut kid-sized Freeze drinks are available, too, and there’s a colorful seahorse sculpture out front that children love to visit. crabbysdockside.com

Children also receive a coloring page to keep them amused. f your idyllic beach destination includes a place with exquisite sunset views, set your sights on award-winning Clearwater Beach on Florida’s west coast. This is where travelers from around the globe visit for sugar soft sands, warm gulf waters and nightly bursts of fiery red, orange and purple that equate to everlasting vacation memories. Clearwater Beach is where the spectacle of a good sunset is celebrated every night with the Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival. Held in the heart of the public beach area, the party starts one hour before, lasts until one hour after the sun goes down and combines stellar sunset observation spots with live entertainment, vendor booths and music, all at no charge. If you’re into Instagram shots and selfies, you’ve discovered the right place. Most seasoned sunset watchers plan their day around the official time the sun sets and either postpone their evening meal or head for one of numerous dining and drinking outlets that also offer premiere viewing. Check out Palm Pavilion Beachside Grill & Bar or Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill on the north part of the beach, and on the south, head for Shepherd’s Tiki Beach Bar and the rooftop bar at Jimmy's Crow's Nest. Nothing compares with a mix of the gentle lapping of waves, salty sea air and a panoramic blaze of color to make for a truly blissful evening. Among the commercial vessels sailing out of Clearwater Beach Harbor are dining cruises Starlite Majesty and Yacht StarShip, the swashbuckling Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise and private charter catamarans. Want a quieter spot? Head just south of the main beach area to 95-acre Sand Key Park. Tote in food to grill, or just pack a picnic or snacks and enjoy pristine stretches of sand and sweeping sunset views overlooking Clearwater Pass. By far the most preferred viewing area is actually the simplest. A travel staple for the past four years, the Tampa Bay CityPASS lets passholders visit five of the area’s most popular attractions—Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, The Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa at Lowry Park, Clearwater Marine Aquarium and either the Museum of Science & Industry or the Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center—while saving more than 50 percent off each admission price if tickets were purchased separately. Perfect for animal lovers, CityPASS holders can get up close to 7,000 plants and animals at The Florida Aquarium, including sharks and river otters; see more than 1,300 animals at ZooTampa, including four endangered red wolf pups; and even meet Winter, the dolphin with a prosthetic tail from “Dolphin Tale,” and other rescued marine life at Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a working animal hospital. Bike Share makes it fun to get around
St. Petersburg abuts the calm waters of Tampa Bay, providing beautiful waterfront views as a backdrop to an eclectic mix of old and new buildings. Unique architecture, a throwback to the city’s heyday in the 1920s, can be viewed at facilities still in use today, including the St. Petersburg Open Air Post Office, St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, the multi-use Coliseum and nearby 100-year-old Sunken Gardens. Culture reigns supreme in this trendy city where “must see” stops include The Salvador Dali Museum and The Chihuly Collection. Two recent additions will definitely impress, so make time for The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and the American studio glass themed Imagine Museum. St. Petersburg has a very walkable downtown, made even more inviting by the vast array of unique murals that adorn the sides of downtown structures. Seven unique arts districts lure with their own distinct flavor, and galleries, boutiques, shops and antique stores mix it up with sidewalk cafes, brewpubs and fine dining establishments. If you prefer not to walk, hop the St. Petersburg Trolley Downtown Looper, PSTA’s Central Avenue Trolley or grab a bike from one of several Coast Bike share stops. The action picks up at night with live entertainment and music at downtown bistros, wine bars, lounges, coffee bars and rooftop lounges, all within a few blocks. Baseball 48

No Taste Like Home takes agritourists into the forests with their three-hour Foraging Tour. The tour begins with a brief introduction to foraging before heading out into the woods. The guide points out what is edible and what isn’t, then lets his crop of budding foragers on the loose to see what they can find. After, scavengers empty out their baskets onto a tarp to show off what they gathered. What’s edible, they can take to one of five area restaurants—Vue 1913, Nightbell, The Market Place, Rhubarb or The Montford—to redeem for a free appetizer specially prepared with their foraged ingredients. Shorter tours are available in conjunction with the Omni Grove Park Inn. notastelikehome.org

Turgua specializes in infusing ingredients grown on neighboring farms or foraged from the surrounding mountainside into their beers. What’s on tap is always a surprise as head brewer and owner Phil Desenne brews with what’s seasonally available. Think farmhouse beers like a slightly tart strawberry sour saison or an evocative saison brewed with foraged chanterelle mushrooms and melons. he coastal Carolinas are the home of beach music, a style that grew out of 1950s vocal pop as well as rhythm and blues. Distinctly different from guitar-centered West Coast surf music, beach music gave rise to the shag dancing scene. There’s still a strong beach music tradition in and around Myrtle Beach, but today it’s joined by a wider array of musical styles. Locals and vacationers alike in search of live music have many options.
PINE LAKES TAVERN The Pine Lakes Tavern bills itself as a “sports bar and gastropub,” and features a small but varied menu of bar food. ounding father James Oglethorpe would disapprove of the many unique spots to raise a glass in Savannah. Issued a land grant by King George in 1733, he insisted alcohol be banned. Years later, Georgia twice outlawed drinking, first in 1885, then in 1908, 12 years before nationwide Prohibition. However, the “Hostess City of the South” never lost its desire or ability to get its drink on, legally or not. Two fun stops put that in perspective: Ghost Coast Distillery’s tour includes a film about the local history of alcohol, and the American Prohibition Museum’s self-guided tour ends at the locked door of an operational speakeasy that requires a secret word for entrance. Step inside, and you’re back in the ’20s. Ghost Coast, Savannah’s first post-Prohibition distillery, makes signature vodka and whiskey, plus everything that goes into its full-service Cocktail Room menu. New to the scene is Savannah Spirits Distilling Company, sharing space with its namesake chophouse. For great Savannah River views in a stylish setting, head to Bohemian Hotel’s Rocks on the Roof. plus a club membership with weekly tastings. The compact Artillery Bar, where the Georgia Hussars’ armory once stood, is a sophisticated spot for libations and conversation. Only accepting cash and sporting Pabst Blue Ribbon signage, Pinky Masters is known as Savannah’s best dive bar. A jukebox stands in one corner, and walls bearing memorabilia include a clip of Jimmy Carter’s visit when running for president. In the alleyway behind Broughton Street, Alley Cat Lounge has a hideaway vibe. Its 32-page, newspaper-format drink menu is peppered with quotes and stories of notorious drinkers like Hemingway and gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Read how Savannah’s signature cocktail, Chatham Artillery Punch, was created to celebrate George Washington’s 1791 visit. Its name honors both Savannah’s location, Chatham County, and Georgia’s oldest military unit. With four kinds of liquor plus sparkling wine, this punch is so strong that Washington’s next-day hangover was so severe, he swore never to return. Craft breweries await as well. Whether cocktail or brew, enjoy either in to-go cups in the historic district to continue the party.

PRESERVATION HALL THE LEGENDARY MUSIC VENUE KEEPS TRADITIONAL JAZZ ALIVE IN NEW ORLEANS By Teresa Bitler
I
t’s easy to find outstanding jazz in the French Quarter. But, if you want to hear traditional New Orleans jazz, the kind of toe-tapping, improvisational tunes Louie Armstrong often played, Preservation Hall is the place to go. A music venue, touring band and a non-profit organization, Preservation Hall dates back to the 1950s when Larry Borenstein realized owning a small art gallery limited the time he had for live jazz. Since he couldn’t go to the performances, he brought the music to his gallery by offering traditional jazz musicians a place to rehearse.
Expect a laidback, intimate experience. During the show, the seven band members interact and joke with the audience and, for $5, will play requests. You’re even encouraged to bring your own adult beverage in a plastic cup. Consider getting a hurricane to go from Pat O’Brien’s next door. Tickets for bench seats can be purchased online for $40 or $50, but most people start lining up for general admission tickets ($20) an hour before the next show. Although those at the front of the line may be lucky enough to score unpurchased bench seats, most wind up sitting on worn cushions on the wood floor or standing in the back.
The venue hosts five acoustic performances every night (with the exception of holidays and special events) at 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 p.m. Performances feature a rotating ensemble of
Like the performances, dress is casual. In fact, since the room can get stuffy, shorts are the best option during the summer. While you’re welcome to photograph the room prior to the seven band members’ entrance, Preservation Hall prohibits photographs and recordings of any kind during the performance.
Guests line up outside to buy tickets to one of five, 45 minute-long shows performed most nights

Soon, these informal sessions became so popular he moved his gallery next door and transformed his original space into a venue dedicated to preserving traditional jazz and handed the day-to-day management over to Allan and Sandra Jaffe. THANK YOU ALLEGIANT
It was my first time flying at the age of 51, and I’m so glad it was with your company. I felt so relaxed and excited at the same time. I snapped awesome pictures that I posted on Facebook and everyone was blown away. My kids also had a great time just looking out at the landscape. Our experience gave this family so much to talk about. Thank you so much for being an awesome airline.
- Mike C, Ohio
I have Cerebral Palsy. As a result, I utilize a wheelchair for my main mode of transportation The boarding and airport agents were excellent in assisting me. They asked me multiple times how they could assist me, versus just assisting me without my instruction. I felt so empowered because they allowed me to do what I was physically able to do and provided assistance only when I asked for it. They made me feel so good it brought tears to my eyes. It also reassured me that people needing special assistance are still able to partake in traveling independently.
- Marcus M, Ohio
I was impressed with all the personnel of Allegiant as everyone was extremely friendly. The young agent was even helpful to my son, who wanted to make sure his elderly father got away safely. It was my first experience with Allegiant, and I would recommend your airline without hesitation.

n May, we took delivery of our first U.S.assembled A320 aircraft from the new Airbus facility in Mobile, Ala. To mark this important milestone for the company, six Allegiant team members from around the country were invited to the facility for a special hand-over ceremony. “Imagine my excitement when I learned that I was selected to attend the Airbus induction ceremony. I was thrilled, honored and thankful for the opportunity,” Judi Jones said. “I’ve worked in aviation over half my life, and I never could have imagined that I would be able to step on an aircraft fresh off the assembly line, especially one assembled in the U.S.A.!”

The group got to tour the final assembly line as well as our new A320 aircraft at the Airbus
facility before participating in a ceremony with executives from both companies. It was an invaluable experience for everyone involved. “It’s a great honor that I was chosen to attend and one that I hold in high regard,” Patrick Jackson said “The tour of the FAL [final assembly line] was incredible. Airbus has a world-class facility, and just like us, their top value is safety. “ This delivery marks another step toward our planned transition to an all-Airbus fleet by the end of 2018. Some of our previous aircraft have been produced in Airbus facilities in France and Germany. We are proud of the efforts of all our team members in all departments to make this transition possible.

ALLEGIANT HELPS MAKE AIR TRAVEL ACCESSIBLE FOR THOSE WITH AUTISM By Christopher Lewis
S
abrina Linker, 17, of Las Vegas doesn’t like to fly. The problem has nothing to do with the actual flying part. The problem is the airport - the size of the crowds, the unfamiliar smells and noises. Sabrina is autistic, which better explains why the thought of walking through an airport is daunting. “For people with autism like us, airports are too loud,” Sabrina said. “It sets us off. It get us into meltdowns, and it’s just too much information all at once.” The challenges of autism vary from person to person, as the spectrum is wide. But as a whole, it’s common for those who are autistic, or someone with a similar disability, to suffer from a sensitivity to loud noises, confined spaces, crowds and even just a break from the normal routine.
Photos courtesy of Allegiant
It’s a challenge not only for those who are autistic, but their families as well. Think about what it’s like today to make your way through an airport and TSA before finally boarding a plane, and it should be no surprise why many of those families just forgo air travel altogether.
more comfortable with airports and boarding, but it also allows family members to refine their plan for dealing with air travel. “We’re happy to help host Wings For All events across our network,” said Scott Sheldon, Allegiant executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. “As a company, we are passionate about making air travel accessible to everyone - whether through affordable airfare or through training events, which help our travelers with various intellectual and developmental disabilities alleviate some of the stress that comes with flying.” Allegiant has hosted 19 Wings for Autism / Wings for All events in total and four more are scheduled for the rest of 2018. One event is enough to make a difference for Sabrina and those who participated. “Going step by step makes it easier,” she said. “When we were actually inside the plane, I noticed only one kid crying, but by the end, he calmed down. So this process, even as miniscule as it was, had a huge effect.”
That is why Allegiant partnered with The Arc, an organization advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to host Wings for Autism® / Wings for All® events nationwide. Each event serves as a practice. Participants like Sabrina go to an airport and practice making their way through security and the terminal and even boarding a plane. Afterward, each person receives a pair of Allegiant wings. By better exposing someone with autism to the process, the event not only helps them get
