THE PERFECT FALL ESCAPE SEASONAL EVENTS AND ATTRACTIONS IN LAKE COUNTY

ake County may only be a 35-minute drive from Central Florida’s thrilling theme parks, but the tranquil destination feels worlds away.
Known for its “real Florida” experience, the relaxing retreat offers guests an abundance of ways to reconnect with the great outdoors, whether they’re kayaking along pristine Blueways or fishing on one of the county’s more than 1,000 freshwater lakes. While the weather is beautiful throughout the year, fall is the perfect time to visit, as the area welcomes several fun seasonal events and attractions visitors won’t want to miss. There’s no better way to celebrate the start of the fall season than at East Lake County Library’s annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ Contest in Sorrento. Taking place on Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m., the fourth annual event features teams trying to project three-pound to five-pound pumpkins to a target 100 feet away using a catapult they designed and built. Spectators come from as far as three hours away to watch the contest, which focuses on accuracy and not distance. mylakelibrary.org

Guests can even bring their own instrument and jam along in the jam tents or try their hand at the “Funniest Folk Song” writing contest. lakecountyfolkfest.org Oct. 6 and 7 also sees the return of Mount Dora’s Fall in the Field show (renningers.net). Located at Renningers’ Antique Center, the sixth annual event features more than 100 vendors showcasing their “fall finery” as well as a pumpkin patch comprised of hundreds of fresh picked heirloom pumpkins. Additionally, arts and crafts enthusiasts visiting Mount Dora later in the month can see the works of more than 400 juried crafters and artists at the Mount Dora Craft Fair. Celebrating its 34th year Oct. 27 and 28, the festival is expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors looking for unique gifts—everything from ceramics to woodworkings. mountdoracraftfair.com
Another seasonal favorite is the return of Scott’s Maze Adventures at Long & Scott Farms in Mount Dora. Celebrating its 16th season Oct. 6 through Dec. 9, the attraction boasts more than 7 acres of family fun, including a 6.5-acre corn maze and a half-acre mini corn maze. ith companies like Starbucks and Disney slowly eliminating single-use plastic straws, it should come as no surprise that several businesses in Clearwater Beach are also doing their part to protect local marine life by banning plastics that often end up littering the ocean. Not only did dozens of restaurants recently participate in the City of Clearwater’s 90-day Strawless Summer Challenge by only providing plastic straws to guests upon request, but several dining spots in the area have also been certified as Ocean Friendly.
BOBBY’S BISTRO & WINE BAR A Clearwater Beach favorite for almost 2 ½ decades, this California-style bistro has spent the past couple of years working toward its Ocean Friendly certification. Now certified locally by Rise Above Plastics and nationally by the Surfrider Foundation, it has changed everything from its to-go containers (formerly Styrofoam) to its
toilet paper. All of its napkins, coasters, cups and garbage bags are recyclable or biodegradable, and its to-go bags are reusable. Paper straws are available by request, but only after a staff member explains why they didn’t bring one in the first place in hopes that the customer won’t take one. Visitors will discover that supporting the environment has never tasted so good as they relish an assortment of delectable dinner dishes— try the Sherry Garlic Sizzling Shrimp and the Jamaican jerk and Asian-spiced “Jam Asian” Baby Back Ribs! bobbysbistro.com

Clyde Butcher's favorite shot in his new exhibition
THE BUTCHER-DALI CONNECTION EXHIBITION EXPLORES HOMELAND LANDSCAPES OF INSPIRATION By Chelle Koster Walton
C
lyde Butcher has his fingerprints all over southwest Florida. From his photo gallery in the Everglades to his studio in Venice, his large-format nature photography has made a big splash in Florida and the entire U.S. Now, he has taken his art north to St. Petersburg with a special exhibition at the Dalí Museum.
One exhibition element that demonstrates the boundaries of imagination most clearly, a video screen pairs Dalí masterpieces side-by-side with Butcher’s captures. Other screens flash slideshows of Butcher’s photography, particularly his landscapes around his Everglades home base. In a theater setting, a short film chronicles Butcher’s life, work and Dalí journey. His Spain odyssey made him realize, he says, that like Dalí, his favorite spot for creating is his own environment. “That’s what a true artist does: reflect where he lives.”
The result, an exhibition named Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain, opened mid-June at the Dalí Museum and will run through Nov. 25. “It meant for the first time in over 50 years, I’d have a deadline,” said Butcher, who typically shoots landscapes on his own schedule. “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to accomplish, in a week and a half, an entire collection of images worthy of an exhibit. Thankfully, the environment was filled with many things to photograph, which made me understand why Dali loved the area.” Forty of Butcher’s images, in sizes ranging 25 by 30 inches to 5 by 8.5 feet, occupy three gallery rooms. From realistic shots of Dalí’s boyhood village Cadaqués, with its centerpiece cathedral, to the iconic egg shapes of his home and the wind-sculpted rocky landscape, Butcher’s photographs help Dalí admirers understand his paintings—where reality leaves off and imagination steps in. 24

The museum commissioned Butcher to travel to Salvador Dali’s homeland around the Costa Brava region in Catalonia, Spain. Dali’s dream-like, surreal paintings were inspired by his summer boyhood village, his later home in Port Lligat and the rugged landscape of Cap de Creus. Butcher, inspired by the artist’s work when he first visited the Dalí Museum, now had the opportunity to dip into Dalí’s wellspring for deeper inspiration.
“Dalí uses a lot of his local environment in his paintings, and I always thought they were part of his imagination,” said the photographer. “They aren’t. They exist! To me that was an amazing thing to see.”

Save room for Greek pastry; the honey-laden baklava is fabulous! A mile from the sponge docks is the historic and easily walkable downtown, beckoning with numerous antique shops, galleries, boutiques and the iconic St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Nature lovers may enjoy kayaking down the Anclote River or hiking through 155acre Fred Howard Park, a restful and scenic way to enjoy the area’s beauty. Events are an important part of this city’s culture, and the annual Sponge Docks Seafood Festival, scheduled this year from November 9th to 11th, features a two-block long festive weekend of food, music and culture. Winter vacationers should plan around the Epiphany celebration, held each January 6th at the downtown Spring Bayou, where the blessing of the waters culminates with the diving for the cross by area youth. The celebration dates back to 1903 and now attracts thousands from across the world. he next time your travels take you to the Clearwater area, take a short drive north to a quaint city steeped with history and enveloped in a colorful heritage. Tarpon Springs was named because original settlers spotted tarpon jumping in the area’s Anclote River. Incorporated as a city in 1887, by the early 1900s it had become a thriving settlement for Greek immigrants who found the waters to be an excellent locale for sponge fishing, a lucrative industry that is still in place today.

PUNTA GORDA
"Our First Firehouse"
THE WRITING ON THE WALL 450 YEARS OF PUNTA GORDA HISTORY By Chelle Koster Walton
T
he clock on the vintage fire station mural in Punta Gorda reads 4:38, the exact time Hurricane Charley hit Punta Gorda full-force on Aug. 13, 2004. Look closer for other details: the match sticks and frayed electrical wire, for instance, are fire hazards that can contribute to the havok of these ferocious storms. After Charley passed, the hurricane and ensuing dangers had demolished half of the city’s original 20 murals. All but a few of the murals taken by Charley and demolition have been reconstructed. “Our First Firehouse” mural counts as number 28 among the existing 30 murals that the non-profit Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society
has made happen since 1995. It was the first painted inside, but is ever-visible to passersby through open doors. The most notable, “Hotel Punta Gorda,” was recreated on a condominium building near the Peace River in 2011, along with its companion “Hotel Charlotte Harbor,” depicting a later iteration of the 1888 wooden resort originally built by Florida Southern Railway. Nuggets of history, the murals tell stories— from “The Conquistadors” mural that retells early chapters of Floridian life, to “Captivating Charlotte County,” modern wildlife scenes at Laishley Park Municipal Marina. “They tell more than 450 years of history,” said Kelly Gaylord, mural society president and teacher of mural-based history classes locally. The society also conducts walking tours during the fall and winter season, taking in about 12 murals downtown. Guides point out artists’ quirky, hidden teases, the painstaking historic detail and QR codes that link to website descriptions.
Photos by Chelle Koster Walton
Punta Gorda’s early resorts scene drew famous visitors from Charles Darrow and Thomas Edison to celebrity golfer Patty Berg
At “Cattle Drive Down Marion Avenue,” Gaylord points out the outlines of five cow hunters in the clouds. Off to the left, she draws attention to the roof of the old hotel behind a fence where cattle are moseying down the dusty road that is now Punta Gorda’s main street, a block from the mural. The most recent, “Ladies Remembered,” debuted in April 2018 on Tamiami Trail and features seven of the city’s historic figures. A porthole mural, still in fundraising stages, lies beneath the U.S. 41 bridge along 2.5-mile Harborwalk showcasing local sea life.
"Ladies Remembered," the most recent of 30 murals in Punta Gorda
“We don’t really have a number for how many we want all together,” said Gaylord of Florida’s second largest mural-town collection. “There’s a lot of walls out there!” puntagordamurals.org SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

GRAYTON BEACH
Before the 26 miles of shoreline known as South Walton County became a series of planned, picture-perfect beach towns, there was free-spirited Grayton Beach. Just 35 minutes from Destin, Grayton Beach attracts the artsy crowd with bohemian galleries, beachgoers with sugar sand beaches and nature-lovers with the surreal dunes and tidal lakes found in Grayton State Park. Fill your day at Grayton State Park where recreational opportunities merge beach and backwoods experiences. The emerald green gulf and pristine lakes host fishing and paddling in both salt and fresh water. The park has 2,000 acres of diverse habitats that are home to shorebirds, bald eagles, deer and fox. The park also offers five miles of hiking and biking trails, pinewood campgrounds and cabins. Within the town of Grayton Beach, gallery shopping, beaching and swimming inevitably lead to a cold Grayton Beer Company beer at The Red Bar. graytonbeach.com
SEASIDE
About a mile east on 30A from Grayton Beach and just 37 minutes from Destin, you’ll find Seaside. This town started the revolution known as New Urbanism, a return to walkable neighborhoods, picket fences and front porches. Seaside invites visitors with beckoning beaches, fairy-tale charm and one-of-a-kind stores, galleries, pop-up shops and dining experiences, including a row of Airstream food trucks, a farmer’s market and must-try restaurants such as Bud & Alley’s and Great Southern Café. seasidefl.com

ROSEMARY BEACH
A 43-minute drive from Destin, Rosemary Beach is well worth the trip down the 30A. Rosemary Beach is another example of New Urbanism. The multiple neighborhoods of architecturally unique homes are connected by pedestrian footpaths, boardwalks and pathways that lead to the public areas. Everything in Rosemary Beach is accessible by foot and cars are relegated to alleyways behind the homes, which enhances the stress-free environment. The Town Square features unique shops, and restaurants range from casual to classy. Check out Pescado Rooftop Bar for fine views, sips and seafood. rosemarybeach.com NORTHWEST FLORIDA

FISH-FRENZIED IN DESTIN THREE WAYS TO CATCH FISH FEVER ALONG FLORIDA’S EMERALD COAST By Chelle Koster Walton

etween the Destin History and Fishing Museum, Destin’s reputation as the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village and a long menu of seafood-focused restaurants, the Destin-Fort Walton area in Florida makes vacationing all about the fish. In Destin, fishing and history are as entangled as a hopelessly fouled fishing line. The highly touted recreational destination began as a small commercial fishing village. Just across the bridge from Okaloosa, it long remained the lesser-known of the two resort areas that now make up the Emerald Coast, so-named for its gem-toned waters.
Seas the color of gemstones and fishing boats galore define Destin

The historic photographs and exhibits at the Destin History & Fishing Museum chronicle the early days of fishing, including a historic boat and equipment on display indoors and out. Wannabe big-catch anglers can come here to see dozens of mounts and exhibits of fish that swim local waters. The mount mural explains the science behind Destin’s whopper reputation for fishing as well as its dazzling waters and white sand. There’s also an exhibit devoted to the Destin Fishing Rodeo, which takes place throughout October. destinhistoryandfishingmuseum.org With a reputation as the biggest in the country, the Destin Fishing Fleet docks at nearby HarborWalk Village. Charter a day or half-day trip and experience the reason for Destin’s superlative fishing reputation: deep, fish-laden waters. You don’t need a boat to fish along the Emerald Coast, however. The Okaloosa Fishing Pier in Fort Walton Beach stretches a quarter of a mile into the Gulf of Mexico. Brag-worthy catches such as tarpon, sailfish, tuna and mackerel happen daily. Bait, tackle and rentals are available. Anyone can participate in the 70th annual fishing rodeo, Oct. 1-31, and other

Krewe of BOO descends on the French Quarter for All Hallow’s Eve
HALLOWEEN IN NEW ORLEANS WHAT SECRETS LURK IN THE BAYOU? By Sean Davies
A
utumn casts a spell in New Orleans, and as the nights grow longer, mischief and magic fill the streets of the Big Easy. Parades and historic tours take on a haunting air, and the storied Cities of the Dead come to life for visitors eager to experience All Hallow’s Eve amongst the Voodoo and witchcraft ingrained in the tapestry of New Orleans.
While there always seems to be a parade charging through the streets of New Orleans, the celebratory spectacle takes on a frightening twist when Krewe of BOO takes over for the official Halloween Parade. Assembling at Elysian Fields, this beautifully horrific cavalcade features props and floats designed by Kern Studios, live bands, dance troupes and crowds of over 100,000 people. The parade and party are held on October 20th in the French Quarter. kreweofboo.com Of course, no parade would be complete without a festive outfit, especially a Halloween procession. Nikki’s French Quarter Halloween Store boasts the widest selection of costumes in New Orleans, but fashionistas may want a mask from Maskerade in the French Quarter, mixing the macabre of the season with the sophistication of Old Louisiana.
Both offer plenty more to choose from, including pub crawls, free museum tours and even tours and exhibits on the real history of Voodoo, but the greatest draw will always be exploring the tombs and graves of the famed Cities of the Dead with the expert tour guides of either company.

CITIES OF THE DEAD
The cemeteries of New Orleans are distinguished not only for their above-ground design tombs nicknamed Cities of the Dead, but also because some of those tombs have been in use since the late 1700’s. The oldest of these is St. Louis No. 1, which is no longer accessible to the public, but touring companies can take guests into these monuments to memento mori throughout the city. Bloody Mary’s Tours (bloodymarytours.com) offers a Moonlight Graveyard tour, where guests are taken through the cemetery district under 48

On the day Mrs. Wright spoke with Sunseeker, her store manager had just returned from a Pinot Noir camp in Oregon. On any given day, you’ll find small groups of friends sprawled in the comfy, dark leather chairs and sofas that are strategically scattered throughout both levels.

eep Austin Weird,” is a slogan that has been going strong since the beginning of the new millenium, celebrating the art, history and culture that mix and mingle in the heart of Texas all year ‘round. This October, Austin will open its doors to one of the nations most popular music festivals, The Austin City Limits Music Festival. Featuring 125 performances across eight stages over two weekends, Austin City Limits is an event that combines music from around the world with the sights, scents and flavors of Austin. Local food and art are only complimented by the sounds of artists like Paul McCartney, David Byrne and Childish Gambino. Tickets are on sale now for the festival, taking place Oct. 5-7 and 12-14 in Zilker Park. aclfestival.com ACL marks the beginning of a season of festivities, as October also brings the celebration of Oktoberfest. Several venues across town celebrate the German holiday, but few take it as seriously as the German-Texan Heritage Society. On October 13, they play host to an Oktoberfest celebration at the German Free School Building that boasts live music, German food and beer (germantexans.org/events/oktoberfest/). The following weekend, the festivities continue at Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden, Oct. 18-20. Known in Austin for having the largest tap wall in the city, Banger’s guests won’t have trouble pairing their sausage with a nice pint. Selections include exotic and wild game, poultry, vegetarian and special options, like currywurst, but Oktoberfest aficionados know that no fest is complete without a traditional Bratwurst and a smooth German beer. bangersaustin.com For more of the local faire, the Texas Monthly BBQ Fest sets up shop at the Long Center in Austin, November 3-4. I have flown three times with Allegiant since the announcement of nonstop flights from Memphis to Oakland. There are not enough words to explain my gratitude since I have finally been reunited with my family members. Thank you, Allegiant!

While sitting in the very last row of the plane, my wife suddenly realized she had forgotten her tablet in the terminal. She panicked! Overhearing my wife’s dilemma, the flight officer told my wife, “I can get it for you.” After about 10 minutes, he returns to the aircraft carrying my wife’s work tablet. This is true customer service. Other airlines would not have cared or just ignored her. I cannot begin to say how great our experience with Allegiant was!

Harry’s Beach Bar
And when you come calling to paradise, it only makes sense you stay at a resort that matches the experience. Sirata Beach Resort is one such place with its coastal-casual theme. The resort has undergone a renovation of its 382 guest rooms, many now including wide, woodplank floors and updated decor. Its “complete transformation” also includes a redesign of the pools, beachfront oasis, a new Sprouts Splash Zone, private cabanas, hanging-chair garden, upgraded meetings and event facilities with unique murals created by local art legend, Derek Donnelly. Inside are three restaurants - two of which located right on the beach. Harry’s Beach Bar is a local’s favorite, where you can savor its famous hurricane cocktail alfresco while overlooking a fiery sunset as you enjoy a cool ocean breeze. The bar also has an extensive beer selection with seasonal and local craft beers on tap. Be sure to try their signature Avocado Mango Tango burger. Rum Runners Bar & Grille is their more casual beach spot with rustic seating, fire pit and also providing amazing views. Diners looking for more of an upscale experience will love the Compass Grille, offering delectable cuisine in an elegant, indoor setting with specialties that include Peruvian chile, lime scallops and grilled Filet Mignon stuffed with mushroom duxelle and red wine sauce. While enjoying your stay, we recommend you check out the local art scene in town with its funky specialty shops and art galleries. The resort is conveniently located near the Salvador Dali Museum, housing a collection of 96 oil paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Allegiant flight attendants: One big family
2,4,6,8, WHO DO WE APPRECIATE… FLIGHT ATTENDANTS! By Kerry McGee
T
hey are the face of our operation, the heart of our business and their primary focus day to day revolves around serving other people and providing exceptional customer service. Through their kindness and compassion, they truly embody our values, especially safety, flexibility, and teamwork. Every October, we say “thank you” to our flight attendants a little more often in honor of our annual Flight Attendant Appreciation Month.

The entire Allegiant team extends their heartfelt thanks to the more than 1,000 flight attendants who have already served more than 8 million customers just this year. When asked why they love their job, the answers are never self-serving, providing great insight into who they are and what they are passionate about: “I have been a flight attendant here for six years and could not be more fortunate to be part of this growing family. I am proud to be part of an amazing team with such great customers, and I would never trade
my wings in for anywhere else!” Jessica Tan, Las Vegas “I love Allegiant and all of my team members. We are a big family, and I’m so grateful to be able to fly and work for this amazing airline.” - Jorge Alvarez, Punta Gorda, Florida “I’ve been here for six and a half years, and I made some of my best friends (and husband!) here. My mom is also a flight attendant with us. I love my Allegiant family and all of the memories I have made.” Candice Smith, Los Angeles In addition to our appreciation month in October, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our team members purchase and wear pink Allegiant apparel, and flight attendants sell pink lemonade onboard (they accept donations as well) with a portion of both proceeds donated to National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since 2015, we have donated more than $80,000, and this year will be just as successful! SPOTLIGHT

rom NFL football players to Allegiant’s flight crews, October means pink. Walking down the aisle, you’ll find flight attendants in brightly colored polos, belts and scarves, and if you peak into the cockpit, you’ll see pilots sporting the color via ties and epaulets. It’s all for a good cause of course: By now, you know it’s in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It’s one of the leading health crises for women in the United States as about one in every eight women will develop breast cancer. It’s a disease with no known cure, and one where early detection is critical to survival.
$1, $2, $5 or any multiples of these amounts during their flight, in addition to purchasing pink lemonade. In recognition of their onboard donations, passengers will receive an I GIVE HOPE sticker in show of their support. Since 2015, Allegiant has donated over $82,000 in support of the organization’s mission. Over 80 percent of funds donated to NBCF goes to programs such as free mammograms and educational resources.
“Allegiant is proud to partner with National Breast Cancer Foundation on their mission to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services,” said Jay Lee, Allegiant’s director of inflight training, standards and compliance. “Our team members purchase pink apparel to wear in October to support NBCF, and the sale of Minute Maid Pink Lemonade onboard allows our passengers to get involved in this worthwhile cause as well.” This year, Allegiant has increased the opportunities for passengers to give by offering them the ability to donate

Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. Centrally located in the heart of Charlotte County, the course has a reputation as one of the foremost premier layouts in Southwest Florida. Wasting no time in showing this facility will also be aligning with Smith’s vision and undergoing its own renewal, the new name was revealed introducing The Golf Links of Charlotte Harbor. Both facilities are proud to have the only Sorenstam Golf Academy, led by Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA. Rich Smith and his teams will be working hard to make golf exciting at both locations. Smith’s vision doesn’t stop with just these two courses, it goes far beyond, looking to the future of golf.
