PEACE RIVER BOTANICAL & SCULPTURE GARDENS WHERE ART AND NATURE ENTWINE By Chelle Koster Walton

A

surprise puzzle greets visitors to the new Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens that will open October 20, 2017, in Punta Gorda, Fla. The central work of art, Steel Palm, poses a series of metal, blade-like sculptures that wow visitors with their sheer 22-foot height. From two vantage points on the property, all 14 of the individual bladelike sculptures, created by Boston artist Jacob Kulin, align perfectly to create the image of a palm tree, the gardens’ signature symbol.

and opened the gardens with their family foundation. Another boardwalk leads toward their home through an old-growth mangrove forest. From that boardwalk, a couple more statuesque abstract pieces are visible.

Like so many of the dozen or so oversized sculptures that grace the riverside property’s 27 acres, Steel Palm meshes art with nature. Even in the parking lot, three skeletal Tree Trellis sculptures house different colors of flowering bougainvillea, a tropical vining bush that will entwine around and become one with the manmade sculptures by Michigan artists Stefani & Co.

For information visit peacerivergardens.org

The two Ostriches measure 20 feet high

Two 20-foot "Ostriches" by Chinese artist Yu Zhaoyang tower over guests as they enter the gates of the property, anchored by a Mediterranean-style building with a café and natural water features. City Slicker, a painted bronze sculpture by hyperrealist New York artist Carol Feurman, emerges from the water. Along a 220-foot boardwalk leading out over the Peace River, sits Keel, a massive volcanic stone sculpture from Turkey that suggests the framework of an ancient boat. The sculptures all belong to Roger and Linda Tetrault, who live adjacent to the attraction 20

Also around the parking lot, natural marsh vegetation contrasts with exotic staghorn ferns and a collection of hibiscus, Punta Gorda’s iconic flower. More than 4,000 semi-tropical and tropical plants from around the world already grow in the gardens.

Like the garden’s juxtaposition of new and ancient, the gardens will continue to grow with more plants and acreage, different artists and facilities and the elegant entwinement of art and nature.

unta Gorda is the site of a truly unique natural ecosystem. It is situated at the point where the Peace River intersects Charlotte Harbor, the second largest estuary in Florida. Seven natural tributaries and some of the area’s best nature parks and preserves are easily accessible and offer a rich natural tapestry. Families will be amazed at the wildlife sightings at every turn. Alligators, dolphins, manatees and sea turtles all cohabitate in this remarkable landscape of salt marshes and mangroves. Frequently referred to as a ‘nature lover’s paradise,’ here are three of the best ecoadventures to experience magical Punta Gorda.

KAYAK IN SHELL CREEK

While Charlotte Harbor is a kayaker’s favorite, there’s one place five miles from Punta Gorda that locals can’t get enough of: Shell Creek. This straightforward, easily accessed stream is carved out between hills of cypress and oak trees, so it’s perfect on a windy day. Audrey Lima, co-owner of It’s Time! Kayak and Canoe, says one of the best parts about Shell Creek is that on a sunny day you can glance at any stump peeking out of the water and see lots of adorable turtles basking in the sun. itstimekayakandcanoe.com

GET CLOSE TO WILDLIFE AT BABCOCK RANCH

At Babcock Ranch get a glimpse of 70,000 acres of freshwater marshes, prairies and flatlands, and a swamp. The ranch’s 90-minute eco-tours take guests through these adventurous landscapes by bus. Animal lovers will get the chance to see plenty of wildlife such as deer, birds and, of course, gators! babcockranchecotours.com

TEST YOUR BALANCE AT STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING A gator comes up close to say hello at Babcock Ranch

Find manatees and sea stars at Don Pedro State Park

Stand up paddleboarding has become a popular water sport over the last few years, but it’s more than just a great workout. Around Punta Gorda, stand up paddleboarders have the rare opportunity to glide off-thebeaten path waterways and see wildlife up close. Hooked on SUP, offering stand up paddleboarding eco-tours through the region, suggests first time visitors take a tour through Don Pedro State Park to wade through mangrove tunnels, secret lagoons and unspoiled beaches. Stand up paddleboards aren’t just for adults; kids from two years and up can also enjoy spotting sea stars, manatees and turtles. hookedonsup.com SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

radenton, Fla., is a beautiful river town brimming with a dynamic history, artistic abundance and culinary creativity. One of the best ways to explore this gem is on a walking food and history tour, where you can experience the sites and sounds firsthand. Join Taste Dining & Travel Magazine for two very different 3-hour guided walking tours, each spanning 1.5-miles, with stops at several of Bradenton’s most unique and popular restaurants. The Tuesday tour, running at $55 per person, takes visitors to historic downtown Bradenton to discover Old Main Street. Visit a 1926 shopping arcade, Carnegie Library and other classic buildings that have withstood the test of time. Enjoy the chef’s creations at The Fish and Sage Biscuit Café before meeting at the South Florida Museum for a tour of this multifaceted facility, which includes the Parker Manatee Aquarium and Bishop Planetarium. The tour finishes here with delightful desserts served by Sugar Cubed artisan bakery.

On Thursday, visitors can explore the eclectic live-work community, Village of the Arts, home to a charming mix of art galleries and shops in houses built from 1920 to 1930. With meet and greets along the way, savor culinary samplings at Arts & Eats Restaurant, Ortygia and Sugar Cubed. Participants gather at Motorworks Brewing at 1 p.m. and head out from there. The tour finishes at Motorworks Brewing with a brewery tour and a cold craft beer in their beer garden. Cost is $45 per person. “These tours provide a great overview of Bradenton,” explained Neal Finelli, publisher of Taste Dining & Travel. “The downtown Bradenton tour is more historical, a nice encapsulation tour of the various buildings and architecture of the city with stops at three restaurants. The Village of the Arts is a bit

more of a bohemian tour, and the shops and gallery owners are present so guests can be totally informed while they shop. As far as the restaurant stops go, we encourage everyone to come hungry, as portions are generous. Guests will meet the chefs and enjoy their beautiful presentations." Tours, which average 10 to 12 people per tour, are offered from mid-October to midMay and the price includes all food, nonalcoholic beverages and the craft beer at Motorworks Brewing. Guests are advised to wear comfortable shoes and to dress for rain or shine. Reservations are required; call Taste Dining & Travel at 941.366.7950 or visit their website at tasteweb.net.

t can be hard to leave your beach umbrella on the sugar-sand shores, but when you’re feeling the groove to move, check out a water taxi! The Tampa Bay Ferry & Taxi cruises the smooth waters of Boca Ciega Bay with nine stops between Treasure Island and Madeira Beach. The 48-foot shaded pontoon boat is a fun way to spend a day exploring. Since it only traverses the calmer intracoastal side of the beaches, avoiding the rougher Gulf waters, you’re guaranteed to see protected mangrove islands, plenty of pelicans and maybe even a dolphin or two.

MIDDLE GROUNDS GRILLE

Get off at this stop to enjoy a cocktail at this upscale eatery, or head across the street to Treasure Island City Beach. You’re also within walking distance of a variety of fun-loving beach bars and restaurants such as Ricky T’s Bar & Grille and the beachfront favorite Sloppy Joe’s. The Tampa Bay Ferry & Taxi runs Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; a schedule and prices can be found at tampabayferry.com or by calling 727.398.6577.

Find the ferry schedule online and plan your day. If you’re staying at beach lodging, call FreeBeachRide.com at 727.686.5396 to get to a ferry stop. The complimentary shuttle van will pick up and drop off anywhere along the beach (just don’t forget to tip the driver). Board the ferry at any of the stops. isitors to Tampa Bay can expect a cultural feast if they include a visit to downtown St. Petersburg this fall. This beautiful city by the bay, recognized as a top arts destination for mid-size cities, features seven distinct arts districts, numerous galleries and world-class museums. Adding to this are three special exhibits certain to make your Florida vacation even more memorable.

STAR WARS™ AND THE POWER OF COSTUME

Sixty-three original costumes from the first seven Star Wars™ films, including those used for Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Queen Amidala, will be showcased at the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg from

Nov. 11, 2017 through April 1, 2018. “Rebel, Jedi, Princess, Queen: Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume” was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in partnership with the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and in consultation with Lucasfilm Ltd. The Denver Art Museum provided additional scholarship and creative modifications to the presentation. The exhibition will focus on the creative process of costume design used to shape the identities of iconic Star Wars™ characters. MFA will be the only facility in the Southeast hosting this exceptional exhibit. mfastpete.org

ETHAN STERN EXHIBIT

Select works of Seattle glass artist Ethan Stern will be on exhibit at the Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center from Oct. 28, 2017 to Jan. 21, 2018. Stern, whose works are exhibited in numerous museums and treasured in private collections, is known for his creative process of abstraction, color, texture and light. His distinct pieces will leave you in awe of the fine art of glass making. Plan time to also enjoy the permanent largescale installations of world-class glass artist Dale Chihuly, a pioneer of the studio glass movement. moreanartscenter.org

SCHIAPARELLI AT THE DALI

Star Wars: Queen Amidala

The Dali Museum on St. Petersburg’s beautiful waterfront is legendary for its magnificent collection of art treasures created by the famed Spanish surrealist. From Oct. 18, 2017 to Jan. 14, 2018, a collaboration between The Dali Museum and Schiaparelli Paris will showcase the haute couture gowns, accessories, jewelry and art created by famed fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, whose visionary designs included those influenced by her friend Salvador Dali. The House of Schiaparelli serviced the rich and famous, including the Duchess of Windsor and Marlene Dietrich, during its tenure from 1927 to 1954. thedali.org CENTRAL WEST FLORIDA

owntown Sanford has long been known for leaving a lasting impression on everyone who visits thanks to its many eclectic eateries, unique boutiques and craft breweries, so it’s only natural for Allegiant travelers to want to take a piece of this charming Central Florida city home with them. Luckily, there are several downtown art galleries and events that showcase local artists’ wares so visitors can find something uniquely Sanford to bring back as a keepsake.

GALLERY ON FIRST

Housed in the 100-year-old Hotchkiss building, this popular gallery and working space for professional and emerging artists showcases a variety of pieces, including watercolors, photography, wildlife and abstract. Offering an inside look at the working process of an artist, locals and tourists alike are welcome to congregate in the gallery and learn about the artistic process while appreciating the diverse array of art on display. galleryonfirst.com

The sister gallery of Gallery on First, it is also located in the historic Hotchkiss building and features a collage created by renowned Chicago-born artist Mr. Imagination adorning its façade. In addition to showcasing works by some of the nation’s most sought-after folk artists—including Florida’s own Ruby C. Williams, Mary Proctor and Alyne Harris—the gallery hosts various seasonal events. THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

Just wanted to compliment the entire experience of my flight this past weekend. The Savannah airport is a beautiful airport. The Allegiant staff in the airport and on the flight to Louisville, KY were great. I drove from Jacksonville, FL in order to have Louisville as my final destination. Thank you.

– Rebecca P, Florida

I wanted to make sure I got word to you about how awesome Matthew in your cabin crew is. He remembers repeat passengers and greets them with sincerity (not just me, but multiple people on this morning’s flight). He engages with his passengers, and his hospitality goes above and beyond the call of duty. Having him on board creates a friendly atmosphere that genuinely makes the experience of flying better.

- Russ M, Arizona

The flight attendant, Charlene, was without a doubt the BEST I have ever had on any flight in all my years of flying. She was professional, super friendly and helpful beyond the call of duty. Charlene was so awesome. Everyone on the plane enjoyed her company.

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT HOWIE MILLER, PIT FLIGHT ATTENDANT By Kerry McGee

T

he old cliché “work hard, play hard” is especially true for Pittsburgh-based flight attendant Howie Miller. He started his career with Allegiant two years ago and has not wasted any time taking advantage of his awesome flight benefits. If he’s not in the air caring for passengers, he can be found traveling. From Acadia to Zion, Howie’s goal is to visit all 58 national parks in the United States, and because of Allegiant, he’s more than halfway to his goal. We took some time to catch up with Howie about his recent adventures and passion for his job:

Photos courtesy of Howie Miller

Allegiant: What about your job gets you excited to go to work? Howie: It’s all about the people! From my awesome coworkers to the wonderful travelers that I can impact each day, they are the reason I love doing what I do. We have a few frequent travelers and seeing them regularly always puts a smile on my face. In addition, I love the flexibility and the opportunities I have to travel. Finding a company that provided a great work-life balance was important to me. Allegiant: What motivated you to visit all of the national parks in the United States? Howie: After graduating school, I knew that being a flight attendant would be perfect for me at this point in my life. I have always loved traveling so getting away during my time off was an added bonus. After visiting a couple of beautiful parks, I knew I had to make it my mission to see the rest of them throughout the country, especially while I have the chance. So far I’ve been to 36 parks—only 22 left! Allegiant: That’s a lot of traveling! How do you keep track of where you have been? Howie: I have a map and I put a pin on all of the locations that I’ve been to. So far, because of Allegiant, I’ve been able to visit 12 countries! As

for all of the parks I have been to, I have a book and get a stamp from each one while I am there. It’s sort of like a passport—just for national parks. Allegiant: Do you have a favorite park or place to visit? Howie: I love Southern Utah. They have a few great parks and amazing scenery. It’s much different than the east coast. I also really enjoyed visiting the state of Washington. I’ve found great hiking trails near Bellingham and Seattle. As far as places in general, I loved my time in Cambodia. The people are friendly, the food is amazing and the overall culture is really humbling. Allegiant: I imagine you’ve done some traveling in your own city. Do you have a great “locals” tip you can share about Pittsburgh? Howie: Definitely! I love the Pittsburgh area. First and foremost, check out The Incline. If you have time, you can kayak on the river under the Roberto Clemente Bridge for an incredible city view. Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh is a must-visit. When you’re hungry, check out Thai Cottage in Regent Square or Gaucho Parrilla Argentina. Enjoy yourself here, there’s a lot to see and do!

MAKE-A-WISH ®

A wall of wish stories inside The Wishing Place

ALLEGIANT CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS MAKING WISHES COME TRUE By Christopher Lewis

A

trip on a plane to visit the Orlando theme parks would be a memorable experience for any child. But for a little boy on a clear sunny day in August of 2012, this particular trip from Allentown, Pennsylvania would mark a very special occasion for him and his family as well as Allegiant. On that day, Jamie became Allegiant’s first Wish Kid. It was the first time Allegiant partnered with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation to help fulfill the organization’s mission of granting wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions.

Photos courtesy of Allegiant

These wishes can range from meeting someone famous to building a special play area in their backyard to visiting their favorite theme parks in Orlando. Nearly 75 percent of wishes require air travel, and Allegiant is proud to play a role in helping them come true. But the real power of granting wishes goes far beyond the wish itself. These wishes provide hope and relief during a challenging time in the lives of not only the child, but also their family.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada’s 7,000-square-foot headquarters, named The Wishing Place, is located on Allegiant’s campus. But to Caroline Ciocca, the chapter’s president and CEO, the building symbolizes much more than that. “Now that we have The Wishing Place, we can tell the story of granting wishes and how important and life-changing that is not only for the child, but for the family and volunteers who are involved - that’s priceless,” Caroline said. “We come in and tell them to dream about anything they want, and it really gives the emotional medicine they need.” Allegiant also donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. To find out how you can help make wishes come true, visit wish.org.

“Our partnership with Make-A-Wish® over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Our crews love interacting with wish families and work hard to make every wish flight an unforgettable experience,” said Hilarie Grey, Allegiant’s Director of Corporate Communications. “From our very first wish kid, Jamie, to the more than 850 kids we’ve flown since, it’s an honor make these trips of a lifetime possible.” In addition to providing wish flights, Allegiant has contributed approximately $1 million annually to the foundation, unveiled a special
