HARBORING AFFECTION FALL IN LOVE WITH CHARLOTTE HARBOR By Connor McIlveen

With more than 165 miles of man-made waterways, the confluence of the Peace and Myakka Rivers and access to the Gulf of Mexico, Charlotte Harbor is inextricably linked to the surrounding waters. Whether it’s culture, cuisine, retail or recreation, life in Charlotte Harbor is as beautiful and as boisterous as the sea. Fishermen’s Village, a cultural hub of Charlotte Harbor, connects wannabe seafarers with charter services, fledgling fishermen with equipment and advice, and hungry mouths with the spoils of a fresh catch. King Fisher Fleet, located in Fishermen’s Village, offers sightseeing cruises that take guests to locations like Peace River to view the abundance of the area’s wildlife, like dolphins, manatees and over 100 species of birds. There are even fishing tours, like the Back Bay Fishing Charter, that take guests out onto Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves, the second largest estuary in the state, or out in deeper waters on the Deep Sea

Fishing Charters for larger, more exotic game. Then, they’ll even cut and clean the caught fish, leaving guests with a ready-to-cook catch. kingfisherfleet.com Restaurants like The Captain’s Table and Village Fish Market offer fresh seafood to village-goers who might not have the time to venture onto the sea for their meal, while over 30 shops and boutiques round out the many options at Fishermen’s Village with products from soaps and lotions to clothing and knick knacks. The miles of natural shoreline ensure that Charlotte Harbor is ample with opportunity for fun and exploration out on the water. Hooked on SUP provides guests with the tools to mount their own excursions with kayak and paddleboard rentals, tours and classes. Guests can rent a stand up paddleboard and explore Englewood, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda at their own pace. The tours, however, provide unprecedented access to mangrove tunnels, islands and state parks that amatuer adventurers might overlook. hookedonsup.com Riding the Waves, a boat touring company based out of Englewood, rescues first time mariners from the fear of falling in the drink with their innovative catamaran tours. Peace River Wildlife Center offers an even more in depth look at the local wildlife, with guaranteed animal interactions. Nestled in the mangroves of Ponce de Leon Park, this animal rehabilitation and education center typically has around 100 different animal residents who aren’t able to be returned to the wild in addition to the 2,500 patients annually admitted. While admission to a group tour is free, after seeing the work the center puts into rescuing and rehabilitating animals, most guests are compelled to donate to the non-profit organization, so that they can continue to save the local wildlife. prwildlife.org There are more places to see human and animal life coexisting in Charlotte Harbor. At Babcock Ranch Eco Tours, guests are invited to tour a working cattle ranch, where 73,000 acres of some of Florida’s most environmentally valuable land were preserved in what still ranks as the largest single land preservation purchase in state history. The Eco-tour Trail loops the property and is a free alternative to their popular Swamp Buggy Tour, which takes guests out into the depths of Telegraph Swamp, and up-close and personal with Cracker Cattle, Florida panthers and alligators. babcockranchecotours.com Of course, visitors to Charlotte Harbor are more than welcome to keep their feet dry and explore the more urbane amusements of a Floridian vacation. Over 20 golf courses dot the land, including Riverwood Golf Club in Port Charlotte, which is ranked fifth in the state. Fine dining establishments in the area are as plentiful as fish in the sea, including standouts like Lock ‘N Key in Englewood, which serves steaks that are handcut daily, and JD’s Bistro, a reimagining of a 1940s jazz supperclub complete with an award winning wine list and mouth watering Filet Mignon. It would be a shame, however, if those delectable meals weren’t followed by a walk along the harbor. It’s the perfect after-dinner treat. D e s t i n at i o n ▪ f l o r i da

STAY AWHILE IN PUNTA GORDA THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER REASON TO STAY By Sean Davies

Along the shores of Charlotte Harbor lies one of Florida’s best kept secrets. An adventurer's paradise, the seaside city offers guests unprecedented access to stunning oceans, nature preserves, beautiful beaches and a bustling downtown filled with new shops to explore. Punta Gorda is Florida's harbor-side hometown. With over 40 percent of the city’s land area serving as dedicated nature preserves,

adventure is literally built into its foundation. A walking and bike friendly community, the city’s free bike-loaner program gives guests the chance to ride through networks of pedestrianfriendly trails that link historic neighborhoods, parks and the burgeoning downtown into one beautiful tapestry. Visitors can take a stroll along the Punta Gorda pathways, play tennis or pickleball in one of the many courts or enjoy the electricity of a downtown that the Miami Herald says "gets an unexpected groove on as day turns to night." Charlotte Harbor give visitors ample opportunity to fish in the crystal clear waters, sail the smooth seas or kayak through lush mangrove tunnels. Home to Florida’s southwestern estuaries, mangrove wetlands, historic river and productive uplands, these areas comprise one of the largest ecosystems of its kind in North America. Hike and bike along park paths for chance encounters with birds of almost every feather, turtles and other local wildlife. Punta Gorda is famous for its small town feel and is known as one of "The Most Affordable Winter Vacations in the U.S." by Travel & Leisure. New businesses relocate to the city every day, lured by the absence of state and local income taxes. Punta Gorda is even listed on the 2017 Forbes list of The Best Small Places For Business and Careers, proving Punta Gorda’s commitment to working with new businesses. Punta Gorda is the one Florida municipality that offers the best of American small-town attributes in what may be the state’s most picturesque, enjoyable and accessible waterfront destination. explorepuntagorda.com R ec r e at i o n ▪ 1 1

History buffs visiting Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach will discover several historical attractions close by. Whether they want to pay honor to those who fought for our country or visit a park that was once inhabited by indigenous people, guests will find several unique ways to walk in history’s footsteps while visiting the area.

The new building will feature more than 17,000 square feet of exhibit and activity space so that the museum can better tell the stories of the men and women who served in all five U.S. military service branches across nearly four centuries. VIETNAM WALL OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA An exact half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., this powerful Punta Gorda attraction in Laishley Park stands as a symbol of America’s honor. Inscribed on its black granite walls are the names of more than 58,000 men and women from all over the country who either gave their lives during one of the most divisive wars in U.S. history or remain missing. The rare attraction that has the power to heal, it’s not uncommon to hear stories of families who met men who served with their loved ones while visiting the wall. vietnamwallofsouthwestflorida.org

INDIAN MOUND PARK At first glance, this Englewood attraction might seem like your typical park. There are boat ramps to go kayaking or canoeing, anglers can go fishing and there are several trails to go birdwatching. However, the park is actually a significant Gulf Coast archaeological site and mound that, thousands of years ago, attracted people for its availability of resources on land and in the surrounding waters. Once a bustling fishing village, the area was excavated in 1965 and 1966. Among the items uncovered were nearly 27,000 pottery sherds, a variety of knives and other chipped stone tools, and an assortment of beads. Markers throughout the park detail its history, letting guests journey into the past while enjoying a day in the sun. visitsarasota.com/parks/Indian-mound-park

THE CELTIC RAY PUBLIC HOUSE This 20-year-old, downtown Punta Gorda institution connects guests to the Irish countryside through food, drink and music, too. Red brick walls, a dark, worn-wood bar and stained glass accents set the stage as folks tuck into their pasties or bangers. It’s famous for Cod Fish and Chips, but everything on the menu — from the Leek Potato Soup to Jameson’s Bread Pudding — smacks of authenticity. More than 25 beers on tap and live Irish music seal the connection. celticray.net

Deciding where to eat when you’re on vacation can sometimes be overwhelming. While it’s easy to go for convenience and just dine at whichever restaurant is the closest, visitors should always make the time to seek out local dining favorites to get a true taste of what the local restaurant scene has to offer. That’s especially true for a destination like Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, which is home to a variety of delicious restaurants visitors should experience during their stay. BLUE TURTLE This classic coastal tavern in Punta Gorda is the perfect place for a delightful dinner. Serving everything from fresh fish to succulent steaks, the relaxed restaurant even has its own raw bar for guests to enjoy. Signature selections include the Oysters Turtlefeller made with Parmesan, bacon, spinach and beurre blanc and the Pan Seared Salmon. Serving flavorful Caribbean cuisine with a Southern twist, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features live music on select evenings. Although best known for fresh seafood that’s brought in daily, the restaurant also offers an assortment of other delectable dishes. Guest favorites include the St. Croix Crab Salad; the hand-cut, 28-day, wetaged steaks; and the St. Croix Seafood Pie loaded with Caribbean lobster, shrimp and scallops. farlowsonthewater.com HURRICANE CHARLEY’S More than just a restaurant, this waterfront raw bar and grill tells the story of the 2004 hurricane that leveled Punta Gorda. Its walls shed some light on how the community triumphed and recovered after the natural disaster, showing visitors how resilient Punta Gorda’s people can be in times of crisis. Today, locals pack the restaurant to relish its sushi, St. Louis Style Ribs and New Orleansinspired seafood (try the Seafood Fondue braised in Cajun cheese). Although the eatery is open for lunch and dinner, be sure to visit in the evening to take in the gorgeous sunsets from its Hunker-Down Deck and enjoy the nightly live entertainment. hurricanecharleys.com

Unless you’re planning an extended stay, it’s practically impossible to dine at all of Sanford’s savory restaurants during your Allegiant getaway. However, visitors can enjoy a true taste of what the Central Florida city has to offer thanks to the newly revitalized Sanford Food Tours. Originally founded in 2015, the culinary tour company reopened last year when it was purchased by Colin Caplan, the new owner of Sanford’s party bike tour company, Limo Cycle. Upon visiting Sanford, Caplan (who also runs food tours in New Haven, Conn.) said he was “struck by the cohesive and robust restaurant district downtown” and got the sense that there was a demand for this kind of service in the area. “As one of the foodie centers in Greater Orlando, Sanford was an ideal spot to begin running culinary walking tours,” Caplan told Sunseeker. “It's this kind of experience that gives both visitors and locals alike insight into the area. There's no better way to immerse yourself in a place than a food tour.”

Photos by April Amellin

Three four-hour guided walking tours are currently offered showcasing some of the many restaurants, bars and breweries that call Sanford home: an Around the World Tour, which features everything from German fare to Spanish tapas; a Brews & Bites Tours that stops at five breweries and bars in the area; and the popular Celery City Tour, which highlights five local dining favorites. Guests will get to try some signature items from each establishment during their tour, with portions ranging from a plate of food per person to mouthwatering morsels depending on the stop. For example, during the Celery City Tour, guests will get to sample everything from chicken wings, rice and beans, collard greens and sweet D e s t i n at i o n ▪ o r l a n d o / s a n fo r d

tea at local soul food restaurant Shantell’s to schnitzel sausages, sauerkraut and German beer at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe. As guests walk from one place to another, they’ll also learn all about Sanford’s founder, Henry Sanford, from their knowledgeable tour guide while seeing some of the city’s many striking sights. Tours start at just $65 per person, with all food and beverage tastings included. Public tours are offered on the weekends, and private tours for eight or more people can be booked in advance for bachelor/bachelorette parties, family gatherings or corporate events. Children are welcome to join the tours, although it is recommended participants be at least 13 years old. sanfordfoodtours.com

Blue Man Group’s Orlando production features a uniquely epic finale

You never know what moments are going to change your life. Just ask Eric deLima Rubb, who took his mom to see Blue Man Group in Boston one Mother’s Day and ended up discovering his future. “I was always drawn to create something vibrant and fresh, and Blue Man Group was this perfect blend of performance art that I liked,” said deLima Rubb. “It had music, acting, comedy, improv and clowning. I told my mom that day I was going to be a Blue Man.” Although his audition later that year went well, deLima Rubb was still a little young and was told to finish college first. Two weeks before graduating he auditioned again, and the day he graduated he went to New York to start training. Now performing as one of six rotating Blue Men in the Orlando production, deLima Rubb said he’s still in the “honeymoon phase” of his career, where he’s excited to come into work every day — even though he’s been a Blue Man for 11 years. While deLima Rubb credits part of his excitement with the cast he works with, the show’s celebratory vibe also plays an important role.

While the party-like atmosphere is exhilarating, deLima Rubb’s favorite part of the production is what he experienced firsthand in college: how the Blue Men connect with audiences. “Recently I was doing a meet and greet and this gentleman showed me a picture of us from my first year here (in 2011) when he saw the show as a kid,” deLima Rubb said. “He said the show made him want to become a musician and now he’s studying music in college. It’s really great to be a part of something that can change someone’s life.” Blue Man Group performs nightly at Universal CityWalk. bluemanorlando.com

“The show has a different feel to it than some of the other Blue Man productions,” said deLima Rubb, who previously starred in the New York, Boston and Chicago shows. “Since Orlando is a vacation destination, the audience is always out to have a good time.” Aside from the large, exuberant crowds, the Orlando production has a couple of unique pieces that make it different from other Blue Man Group shows. This includes a fun piece with the Blue Men’s GiPads (gigantic iPads) where they learn about the hormone oxytocin. D e s t i n at i o n ▪ o r l a n d o / s a n fo r d

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT F ro m o u r pa s s e n g e r s

I recently flew from Wichita to Phoenix/Mesa, and some items fell out of my bag in the plane. They were turned in, and a customer service rep contacted me to return them. She went above and beyond to get them back to me by overnighting them to my home so they were there the next day. This was excellent service all around, and I appreciate it very much.

PATRICK C, ARIZONA

My husband and I flew from Orlando to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the flight attendants and pilots did an outstanding job. My husband is 90 and has significant back pain, and the crew helped in so many ways and were very kind. Their assistance went beyond normal, and I want to compliment Allegiant for our experience.

EUGENIA S, FLORIDA

While checking in, and somewhat stressing over it, Kelly at the service desk was such a pleasant, calming presence. She made my day! With reps like Kelly I’ll be sure to choose Allegiant for all my trips to Arizona.

WHERE TO EAT LIKE A LOCAL in New Orleans

By Christopher Lewis

No city in America is as defined by its food as New Orleans. It’s a city that invented the po’boy and muffuletta sandwich and is known worldwide for its seafood dishes, bananas Foster and jambalaya. And just like a bowl of gumbo, a rich stew made from a variety of ingredients, its cuisine is a reflection of the city itself – heavily influenced by soul food and Creole and Cajun cultures.

Roux Bistro, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel Inside the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel on Canal Street is this innovative restaurant serving Cajun and Creole creations for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Local favorites include the shrimp omelet, fried alligator and Jambalaya Risotto. sheratonneworleans.com

The three recommendations below are located in some of city’s most popular hotels and deliver a true taste of The Big Easy. Red Fish Grill, Hyatt Centric French Quarter The award-winning seafood restaurant is located on the first block of Bourbon Street, off Canal Street. Inside, you’ll discover a casual vibe that includes an expansive bar under exposed brick along with funky, lively décor. The seafood is always fresh, and local favorites include Pecan-Crusted Catfish, Hickory Grilled Redfish and their signature dish – Alligator Sausage & Seafood Gumbo. redfishgrill.com Bijoux at Le Pavillon, Le Pavillon Serving French cuisine with a Louisiana twist, Bijoux at Le Pavillon combines a casual, friendly atmosphere with elegant décor, such as magnificent sparkling crystal chandeliers and railing that once enclosed a seating area for French aristocracy at the Grand Hotel in Paris. Their unique, award-winning menu changes with the seasons, but try their Charred Berkshire Pork Loin, served with andouille grits, pickled ham hocks and wilted greens, if available. lepavillon.com

Make-A-Wish’s new livery on an Allegiant Airbus A320

ALLEGIANT CARES

HELPING WISHES TAKE FLIGHT with A ONE-OF-A-KIND PLANE By Andrew Porrello

We recently unveiled an Airbus A320 with a fresh look: the new blue and white Make-AWish® logo. The aircraft was recently repainted with the nonprofit’s newly redesigned logo and highlights our dedication to helping MakeA-Wish grant wishes to children with critical illnesses.

Photos courtesy of Allegiant

The new livery will most often be seen at our Florida bases — which is fitting, given the fact that more than 95 percent of Make-A-Wish® kids flown by Allegiant travel to the Sunshine State to visit theme parks and beaches. Maybe you’ve seen it. If not, check out the time-lapse video that shows the aircraft’s transformation! Our partnership began on August 25, 2012, when ten-year-old wish kid Jaime and his 11 family members departed from Allentown, Pennsylvania on a trip to Orlando for their first-ever vacation. Jaime had always dreamed of running around the fabled Florida theme parks with his siblings. He got his wish. Since then, Allegiant has helped grant 1,600 more to Make-A-Wish® kids from cities across the nation. We recognize that a wish helps to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. It often has a transformative impact on wish kids, providing the positive mental and

emotional boost needed to help them deal with — and oftentimes overcome — their illness. “Allegiant’s contribution is crucial as nearly 77 percent of wishes require air travel, making it a mission critical resource. Great partners like Allegiant help us move closer to our vision of granting the life-changing wish of every eligible child,” said Holly Thomas, Make-A-Wish® vice president of corporate alliances. Making air travel accessible to everyone is embedded in Allegiant’s DNA, and our partnership with Make-A-Wish® is an important way we demonstrate that. We are currently recognized as a Wish Champion, donating more than $1 million annually. To watch a time-lapse video showing the plane’s transformation, visit: youtube.com/ Allegiant Have you seen the Make-A-Wish® plane at your local airport? Snap a picture, tell us where you saw it, and tag @Allegiant along with #WishPlane for a chance to be featured on our Instagram story. Want to know how you can make an immediate impact? When you purchase the Wingz Kids Snack Pack, $1 of the purchase price will go directly to Make-A-Wish® to help realize their goal of fulfilling every child’s wish.

At Allegiant, we’re all about the hard-working team members who make up our unique culture. From collegiate athletes, to business owners, to musicians, we have an eclectic group who represent us in the air, at airports across the country and our headquarters in Las Vegas. I spent time talking with KC Para, IT Project Manager, about his unique experiences and passion for life: Tell us a little about yourself and what you do here at Allegiant. I am an IT Project Manager. I work with our Development and Quality Assurance teams to make sure initiatives are completed. I’m also on our companywide Culture Board. I love being a part of something that lets me connect so many people. I’ve never loved a job as much as I love the one I have now. A little about me - I was raised in Southern California and moved to Las Vegas in 2017. Shortly after I was born, I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (a congenital disorder of movement and muscle tone) and was expected to never walk with a life-span of seven years. It wasn’t easy, but I was lucky to grow up beating the odds. I’ve been married for eight years to my wife who has three sons. Wow! With your diagnosis happening at such a young age, tell me about some things you’ve done that never felt possible. I’ve done a lot over the years, you could write a book! I’ve enjoyed racing cars, riding

motorcycles and performing in bands. I never let my disability hold me back, it only encourages and drives me more. I completed a 4k (2.5 miles) race because of Allegiant! How did that happen? Someone in my department was competing in Corporate Challenge (Olympic style events hosted by the city of Las Vegas) and mentioned there was a wheelchair division that had zero participants. Automatic gold medal? Sure! I broke out my manual wheelchair and showed up to find hundreds of people ready to compete. They let me start a few seconds early to avoid the rush. The irony is that I still finished last. Near the end of the race, I was coming up a hill with no one in sight, debating if I should keep going or quit. When I looked up, I saw a ton of people cheering, smiling and coming my way. This always makes me emotional. Seeing my team and other finishers get back on the course, to cheer me on and finish the race with me, displayed such a sense of community and humanity. It was a life changing moment that I’ll never forget. I love your drive to do what you love and try new things. I grew up with really encouraging parents who taught me to try new things. That’s probably why I love Allegiant so much – our culture and leaders encourage innovation. I love being able to show people what is possible!
