MOVE WITH THE MUSIC THE ISLAND HOPPER SONGWRITER FEST IS BACK By Sean Davies

Once a year, The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel adds a little music to the picturesque setting with the help of some of rock and country music’s most influential songwriters. The Island Hopper Songwriter Fest invites songwriters from around the world to visit venues in three different locations for 10 days of music, food and fun. The festival celebrates the people behind some of music’s biggest hits, so while some may not recognize the names of the musicians, their music will be instantly identifiable and their talent unmistakable.

Songwriters helping to kick the fest off include NBC’s “The Voice” contestant Sam James (season 3) and winner Sawyer Fredericks (season 8), Billboard-Chart topper Dave Pahanish and Grammy-nominated songwriter Bobby Tomberlin, whose music has been performed by Blake Shelton, Kenny Rogers and even Barbara Streisand. They’ll be joined on Captiva Island by Sam Williams, the grandson of legendary singer Hank Williams, who continues the family legacy of talented musicianship while introducing a lyricism and style all his own.

From September 20-22, Captiva Island sets the stage for the fest as the first destination to welcome the talented songwriters, with several popular restaurants acting as venues. RC Otters boasts delectable seafood and a family-friendly atmosphere that makes it the ideal location for audiences of all ages, while Cantina Captiva adds spice to a performance with scrumptious Mexican and Southwestern cuisine. The venues are often intimate, allowing for audience members to get up close to the artists as they perform the hits they’ve written for artists like Toby Keith, Jason Aldean and more.

The fest then hops from Captiva to downtown Fort Myers from September 22-26, where quality restaurants provide drinks, bites and a backdrop for even more talent. The Barrel Room is known for its wide variety of hard-tofind whiskey, bourbon and scotch, and a latenight menu makes it a perfect place for evening entertainment. Next door, the upscale dining at Twisted Vine Bistro sets the table for an intimate dinner and a show. City Tavern offers guests an award-winning happy hour, pool and darts during the day and a standing room only venue at night that’s perfect for rock 'n roll. The Florida Repertory Theater is also participating in the festival, playing host to Grammy award winner Kristian Bush, one half of the country duo Sugarland, as he is joined onstage by the Gulf Coast Symphony for a oncein-a-lifetime performance.

Aaron Barker, the man behind some of George Strait’s best Billboard Chart toppers, and Frank Myers are just some of the other artists expected in downtown Fort Myers before the fest hops islands once again. Ending in Fort Myers Beach with performances September 27-29, the fest showcases some of the best spots in town as well as some of the best songwriters in the country all at once. Guests can see Chas Sandford, the man behind such hits as “Missing You,” performed by Rod Stewart; Chicago’s “What Kind of Man Would I Be” and “Talk to Me” by Stevie Nicks, as well as several other artists in iconic Fort Myers Beach venues. Nervous Nellie’s offers guests Island Margaritas, Mojitos, Marvelous Martinis and Signature Cocktails to accompany the music, and Pierside Grill and Famous Blowfish Bar welcomes artists to perform while guests sit beachside with frosty beverages. In addition to offering discounted stays to festival attendees, Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina lets guests lounge in the pool as the songwriters take to the stage to perform their best hits. With trolleys, taxis, rideshare apps and bike rentals, getting around these dreamy destinations is easy. In addition to providing information on travel on and between the islands, the website for the Island Hopper Songwriter Fest provides hotels in each location offering discounted rooms to guests of the fest. There’s even an app that guests can download, which is designed to enhance the festival experience with personalized schedules, artist information, performance times and venues, Island Hopper hotel deals, festival maps, updates, alerts and even first chance to purchase tickets for select performances! island-hopper. fortmyers-sanibel.com D e s t i n at i o n ▪ Fo rt M y e r s & S a n i b e l

At the mouth of the aptly named Peace River, Punta Gorda celebrates dazzling views from hotels, shops and parks that line its 2.5-mile Harborwalk. Strollers and cyclists can follow the route for a day of soaking in history and good old Florida sunshine. LAISHLEY PARK The waterfront hub of downtown Punta Gorda, Laishley Park provides boaters ramp access to the Peace River and anglers a 400-foot pier. The marina building, merrily decorated by sea-life murals, holds a tackle shop and rental facilities. Also within the complex, panoramic Laishley Crab House and the well-liked Harborwalk Scoops ice cream shop give you the fuel to power through Harborwalk. Luckily, several restaurants in the area offer impressive alcohol selections, so adults can imbibe a little during their meal.

THE LIGHTHOUSE GRILL Overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway, this waterfront restaurant in Englewood is known as much for its drinks as its fresh-caught seafood, on-site smokehouse and never frozen fare. In addition to an impressive selection of rums, including Bumbu and Brugal 1888, the restaurant offers a nice selection of California wines by the glass that pair perfectly with the Fresh Gulf Grouper or Crab Cake Dinner and 18 ▪ dining

TABLE AND TAP Part of the sustainable master-planned community Babcock Ranch, this farm-to-table restaurant has its own 2 1/2-acre garden that provides most of the fresh vegetables used in its dishes. Specializing in craft beers, its bar has 11 ever-changing draft options, with three or four local beers typically on tap. Additionally, guests can choose from 10 craft beers (as well as mainstream favorites) in bottles or cans. Whichever beer you decide on, be sure to pair your selection with an item made in the restaurant’s competition-style smoker, like the smoked mahi fish dip or pork and sweet corn pancakes. tableandtap.co

FARLOW’S ON THE WATER Considering its owners are from St. Croix and Kentucky, it should come as no surprise that this Englewood restaurant serving Caribbean cuisine with a Southern twist also serves a variety of island-inspired drinks made from Cruzan Rum and an extensive selection of bourbons. Bourbon fans can actually “Sample a Taste of Kentucky” by ordering a bourbon flight and enjoying it with one of the restaurant’s tasty dishes, like the St. John’s Marinated Steak available for dinner, marinated for six hours in honey and Caribbean vinegar. The tropical drinks, meanwhile, go perfectly with one of the restaurant’s salad or seafood entrées, like the nutmeg-topped Pain Reliever made with Cruzan Aged Light Rum, orange juice, piña colada mix and a Cruzan Single Barrel Premium Extra Aged Rum float. farlowsonthewater.com

DUNEDIN BREWERY The oldest microbrewery in the state, Dunedin Brewery hosts live entertainment almost every night of the week. The music events are free for those sipping its premium beers, brewed 14 barrels at a time — try the Apricot Peach Ale for a refreshing brew — and chowing down on the wings, burgers and tacos made in house. On stage, you’ll find both local acts and touring regional groups performing just above every musical genre there is from rock ‘n’ roll to reggae and country to blues. Open jam sessions, open mic comedy and DJs round out the live entertainment lineup. Check the online calendar for more information on performers and start times. dunedinbrewery.com WOODWRIGHT BREWING COMPANY Originally the woodshop where the Optimist Pram, a small dinghy intended for children, was designed, this building was nearly demolished before its current owners took over. Come on Thursday nights for bluegrass jam sessions held in the beer garden from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Or, drop by on Friday nights to hear local artists while you sample the 12 to 16 European-style brews on tap. Fenway Hotel, which first opened in 1928 during the Jazz Age and was home to the county’s first radio station, honors its musical past with live performances in its lobby bar and in its openair, rooftop bar. Performers generally play jazz with the occasional acoustic guitar player or classics singer to mix things up. You’ll find a complete list of all upcoming performances on the hotel’s website. Immerse yourself further in music at Fenway Hotel, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, by checking into one of its 83 rooms. If the need for a fun-in-the-sun getaway is calling you, head to St. Pete Beach, rated by TripAdvisor as one of the top 10 U.S. beaches in 2018. Here’s where you’ll find trendy RumFish Beach Resort part of Tradewinds Island Resorts. Here’s where you’ll spend luxurious days and nights in a tropical paradise as soft sea breezes cool you off by day and exquisite panoramic sunsets wow you by night. Here’s where you’ll embrace their tagline, “Just let go.”

Choose from an extensive selection of fine wines and a gourmet’s pick of choice steaks, pasta and specialty seafood entrees including perfectlyprepared Parmesan Crust Grouper. End with a decadent rum-soaked banana cake followed by a delightfully sinful Snickers or Bananas Foster Martini “liquid dessert.” Conclude your evening at the Sandbox Beach Lounge with a dance on the sand by a romantic fire table as the night air gently embraces you.

This environmentally-conscious resort sits on five sprawling acres facing the Gulf and includes four restaurants and lounges, inviting oversized hammocks, cushy poolside deck chairs and private rental poolside cabanas. Friendly staff consistently receive high marks for stellar service.

Guests also have reciprocal use of amenities at Island Grand, their nearby sister resort, and can enjoy paddle boats, a full-service spa and salon, mini-golf, five pools, in-pool dive-in movies and floating cabanas. For info on RumFish Beach Resort, visit justletgo.com.

Get your fill of quality beach time or take a swim in the adult or family pool. Take an offshore fishing charter, join a guided beach walk or admire the spectacular marine-life artwork of Thomas Krause and resident artist Dean Fortune. Kids will love the Touch Tank Experience, S’more making at night around the fire pit, the towering 3-story water slide and the thrill of snorkeling in a gigantic fish tank stocked with scores of fish indigenous to Florida waters. Choices are many for dining inside or outside, early morning to late night. Grab breakfast at the outdoor Gulfside Grill or return at dusk for a casual sunset dinner. In the evening, treat yourself to a rum flight at RumFish Grill Bar, then progress to the nautical-themed RumFish Grill® dining room and request a table close to the 33,500-gallon aquarium featured on Animal Planet’s “Tanked.” D e s t i n at i o n ▪ ta m pa / s t . p e t e / c l e a r wat e r

EXPLORE ORLANDO

STEP INTO STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE WA LT D I S N E Y WO R L D O P E N S NEWEST THEMED LAND By Sandra Chambers

Originally scheduled to open in late 2019, Disney has decided to open the new Star Wars Land in two phases, allowing fans to experience Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge beginning August 29th at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. When phase two — Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — is completed later this year, these two, 14-acre lands will be the largest and most technologically advanced single-themed land expansions ever in a Disney park, or any other themed land in history. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is also the first land within a Disney park designed to integrate with the Disney Park’s mobile app, providing a unique immersive experience. Guests can use the app to translate a galactic language, aid a smuggler, join the Resistance or pledge their loyalty to the First Order. When guests first arrive at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, they will be transported to the remote

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a hightech, hyper-real simulator ride which invites visitors into the cockpit of the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” where they will be able to take charge of flying the Millennium Falcon in one of three unique roles — some as pilots, some as gunners and some as flight engineers who must work together to pilot the Falcon as it hurtles through space. Back on the planet, walk through the bustling street market, where a variety of venues offer a unique selection of food and beverages. Check out exotic beverages at Olga’s Cantina; Ronto Wraps at Ronto Roasters’ barbecue pit; and Kat Saka’s Kettle Outpost Mix comprised of uniquely flavored popped grains. Be sure to stop at Docking Bay 7 Food & Cargo, a location for traveling food shuttles like Tugg’s Grub. Visit unique merchant shops including the Droid Depot where guests can construct their own astromech droids, or Savi’s Workshop, offering handbuilt lightsabers that guests can customize. Other space-themed items can also be found at the Creature Stall, Black Spire Outfitters, Resistance Supply and First Order Cargo. disneyworld.disney.go.com/destinations/ hollywood-studios/star-wars-galaxys-edge d e s t i n at i o n ▪ o r l a n d o / s a n fo r d

Families looking to beat the heat during their Central Florida vacation will find several water parks in Orlando that know how to make a splash with visitors of almost every age.

DISNEY’S BLIZZARD BEACH Inspired by the mythology of a snow ski resort that couldn’t quite find a suitable climate in Florida, this 66-acre attraction at Walt Disney World Resort is Florida’s coolest water park. Guests can float down Cross Country Creek through a bone-chilling ice cave, descend on a 250-foot course along a “snowy” slope on Toboggan Racers or embark on one of the world’s longest family whitewater raft rides on Teamboat Springs. Ultimate thrill seekers can even take the plunge on the 120-foot high Summit Plummet, one of the world’s tallest and fastest free-fall water slides, reaching speeds of up to 55 miles per hour! If you are visiting before Aug. 25, be sure to take advantage of the Splash Pack, which includes a refillable Disney Water 4 8 ▪ at t r ac t i o n s

UNIVERSAL’S VOLCANO BAY Spanning 25 acres, this water theme park at Universal Orlando Resort features spectacular storytelling and immersive guest experiences from the same Universal Creative team responsible for other groundbreaking experiences at the resort. With 18 unique attractions, including a multi-directional wave pool, the exhilarating Krakatau Aqua Coaster and the thrilling Ohyah and Ohno Drop Slides that send riders splashing 6 feet into a pool of water below, the park uses innovative technology to assign guests ride times through a waterproof TapuTapu wristband. That means visitors will spend more time having fun and less time waiting in lines! universalorlando.com

AQUATICA ORLANDO Located across the street from SeaWorld Orlando, this lush water park boasts more thrill rides than any other Florida water park thanks to its most recent attraction, KareKare Curl. Able to accommodate two passengers per raft, the vertical wave wall opened in April and delivers a high-adrenaline, weightless adventure. In addition to 42 water slides, rivers and lagoons, including the popular Dolphin Plunge that takes riders down 250 feet of clear, underwater tubes through a Commerson’s dolphin habitat, the park is home to 84,000 square feet of white, sandy beaches and more than 60,000 plants. For those traveling with kids, check out Kata’s Kookaburra Cove, a water wonderland for guests under 48 inches tall, complete with fountains, rides and slides. aquaticaorlando.com

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT F ro m o u r pa s s e n g e r s

Allegiant, you are the way to fly. Your staff is amazing, and I have nothing negative to say except if you weren’t so darn cheap, I wouldn’t be looking for flights and trying to find ways to get away.

DAWN V, NEW YORK I want to say what a great experience I had with Allegiant. Wanda, the counterperson, was helpful and friendly. Our flight was smooth, and the pilot, Luis, was personable and kind. My sister who was with me, seconds everything I said. I plan to fly Allegiant again!

GIGI W, MARYLAND I wanted to commend Pamela, our flight attendant, for her attention and kindness during a medical issue with my father. He became ill after takeoff, and she continually checked on him and provided us with whatever we needed to try to make him more comfortable. She even gave up her own coat so he could use it as a pillow. Her exceptional customer service will definitely be a deciding factor in my choice to fly Allegiant in the future.

Who says Myrtle Beach is for adults only? Known primarily for its celebrity-designed golf courses, the popular vacation destination along the Grand Strand may surprise you with the amount of family-friendly activities. Not only will you find an old-fashioned boardwalk filled with arcades and souvenir stands as well as an amusement park with one of the nation’s tallest Ferris wheels, SkyWheel, but some hotels are packed with enough entertainment to keep the kids busy till sundown. Landmark Resort Although the resort is located next the beach, there are so many activities onsite you may never want to leave. The H2Oasis outdoor waterpark features a wading pool with waterfalls, barrel bucket dumps, jet tunnels and a lap pool, which is next to its 9-hole mini-golf course. There’s also indoor and outdoor pool areas, including a 300-foot lazy river. After a full day of all that fun, stop by the Sugar Shak frozen yogurt and ice cream bar or the Shark Bites Snack Bar for some refreshments.

Crown Reef Beach Resort and Waterpark With two four-story waterslides and 15 water features that include a treehouse water play area and 575-foot lazy river, it’s no wonder the resort was named one of the Best Hotels for Water Fun by USA Today’s 10Best. Inside the resort’s Town Center Dining & Fun Zone you’ll find the Swirl Ice Cream & Sweet Shop, snack bars and restaurants as well as the newest and coolest games where the kids can earn tickets to redeem for prizes. Captain’s Quarters Resort For outdoor water fun, there are 15 water features that include multiple indoor and outdoor pools, lazy rivers and whirlpools. There is also the Shipwreck Lagoon Kid’s Waterpark that’s perfect for younger kids with its 1.5-foot deep play area situated around a wrecked pirate ship, waterfalls, dumping buckets and water cannons. But inside the resort, located on the 6th floor, is the Level 6 Entertainment Center that includes an arcade, 20-lane bowling alley and bar. Additionally for the kids, the resort’s mascot, Salty the Shark, will make appearances to host beach games, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts and more.

30 BY 30 Alexandra McLendon By Kerry McGee

Alexandra McLendon (customer relations manager, Las Vegas headquarters) has taken her love of traveling to a whole new level — visiting 30 countries by her 30th birthday! If she’s not hard at work or on a plane headed to her next destination, you can find her doing extensive research and creating travel guides for the places she’s planning to visit. I sat down with Alexandra to chat about her recent adventures and passion for her job:

How long have you been with Allegiant? I joined the team six years ago as a customer service representative in customer care. I worked as a team lead and supervisor before starting my current position, manager of customer relations. I oversee a team of representatives responsible for handling all incoming emails from customers, as well as being available for our live chat feature on the website. As someone who travels often, it’s rewarding being able to help thousands of people make their vacations a reality.

Visiting 30 countries in a lifetime, let alone by age 30, is a hefty goal. What inspired you to make this happen? It is! I spent two years teaching in Japan, and as I headed back to the states, I took a trip to

30 countries by 30

Cambodia. I was on a tour and met a man who mentioned he was visiting 30 countries by his 30th birthday. I asked him more about his goal and left feeling inspired and encouraged that I could do the same thing. I wish I could tell him "thank you!"

Wow! If he only knew! So, has the goal been accomplished? I’ve met so many people and have remained connected via social media, but unfortunately, I never got his contact information. Yes! I celebrated my 30th birthday this past June in Spain — country number 30! Congratulations! I’m sure working in aviation helps — has Allegiant been supportive? In every way! From the travel benefits, flexibility and a supportive culture, I truly couldn’t have done it without Allegiant. The best part is the incredible friendships that I’ve built with my coworkers who love to travel too. There were so many people cheering me on! I’m sure it helps having travel buddies. What was your favorite trip? It makes for great memories, but I’ve also traveled quite a bit on my own. I’ve learned a lot along the way, not just about other countries and cultures, but about myself. I went to London for my birthday a few years ago, and the entire experience was amazing. The flights were smooth, the free museums were a plus, and I loved the people and the food. Are you taking a break from traveling or do you more plans? Nothing as intense as my last goal — but I have so much more of the world to see! I plan to visit Switzerland later this year, but my goal now is to focus on visiting different cities in the United States, especially on our growing Allegiant network. Sunseeker ▪ 55

SERVICE DOESN’T STOP ONCE THE WHEELS TOUCH THE GROUND By Andrew Porrello

Since 2017, Allegiant Travel Company and the American Red Cross have partnered to support individuals, families and communities through blood drives, disaster relief and more. Our employees play a vital role in this partnership, helping to ensure that we continually fulfill our commitment to community safety, preparedness and recovery.

Photos courtesy of Allegiant

Blood Drives The American Red Cross provides about 40 percent of our nation’s blood and blood components, all from generous donors. It’s estimated someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. Unfortunately, only about three percent of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. Recognizing that one of the main obstacles in donating blood is finding time to go to a blood bank after a full day of work, we host blood drives at Allegiant’s corporate headquarters in Las Vegas four times per year. We have seen participation grow over the years in this life-saving program as a result. And with the American Red Cross’ mobile app, our team members can actually track where their own blood is being utilized for people in critical need. To help inspire others across the country to become donors, we have also contributed over $10,000 in Allegiant flight vouchers as incentives for local blood drives. redcrossblood.org Disaster Relief In the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster, communities rely on local, state and federal government support. However, the needs of the victims can quickly overwhelm those entities and they turn to the Red Cross and their partners for additional assistance. The Red Cross strives to respond to any emergency within two hours of notification, and when they

arrive at the scene of a disaster, the first priority is to provide food, water, shelter and medical services. To best respond to each emergency, the organization depends on partners like Allegiant to stand beside them in aiding those whose lives have been impacted. As an airline, we have access to a unique resource that not many other companies do — airplanes. This affords us the opportunity to deliver supplies, transport volunteers and move victims to safety. redcross.org/donate/disaster-relief Sound the Alarm Most recently, Allegiant team members helped sponsor and support the Red Cross’ efforts to raise awareness and reduce home fires by participating in Sound the Alarm, an event that provides free smoke detectors to at-risk communities in all 50 states. Our team members worked alongside the fire department and other local groups to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and educate families about fire safety. Every day in the U.S., seven people die in home fires, and tragically, most victims die in homes that don’t have working smoke alarms. As a reminder, change the batteries in your smoke alarms twice a year. redcross.org/homefires

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST

Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following:

• Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS

Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.

Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.

SMOKING

CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS

Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling

“THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer.

Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
