TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME SPRING TRAINING RETURNS TO THE SUNSHINE STATE By Heather Turk

E

very February and March, thousands of baseball fans travel to The Sunshine State to see Major League Baseball’s finest report for spring training at 13 ballparks. An annual tradition for many baseball enthusiasts, over 28 million people have attended a spring training game in Florida since the year 2000. In fact, last year during the 37-day Florida Grapefruit League spring training season, each of the 249 games had an average of 6,337 fans in attendance, marking the 15th time in 18 years that total attendance surpassed the 1.5 million mark! Five teams will actually be reporting for their 73rd consecutive year of spring training in Florida in 2018: the Atlanta Braves, the Detroit Tigers, the Minnesota Twins, the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals. In total, 15 teams call Florida their spring training home, including arguably Major League Baseball’s most popular team: the New York Yankees.

larger—ballparks, JetBlue Park opened in 2012 and can accommodate 11,000 fans. The Red Sox will play a total of 15 spring training games there this season, starting on Feb. 23 when the team hosts the Minnesota Twins. Additionally, the Red Sox will play back-to-back exhibition games at home on Feb. 22 against the University of Connecticut and Boston College. Fort Myers also happens to be the spring training home of the Minnesota Twins, who play at CenturyLink Sports Complex’s 9,300seat Hammond Stadium. The Twins’ spring training schedule begins at home on Feb. 25 against the Tampa Bay Rays, with their final home game of the season scheduled against the Boston Red Sox on March 25. The team will also kick off their spring training season with a home exhibition game against the University of Minnesota on Feb. 22. The Tampa Bay Rays play all of their home

Each year, thousands of Yankees fans head to Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to see their favorite Yankees players in action. This year’s spring training schedule runs from Feb. 23 to March 25, with the first home game scheduled for Feb. 23 against the Detroit Tigers. Even though Steinbrenner Field is Florida Grapefruit League’s biggest ballpark with a seating capacity of 11,076 people, given the Yankees’ popularity, tickets go fast so fans are encouraged to buy them as soon as possible. The Yankees’ longtime rival, the Boston Red Sox, also call Florida their spring training home, playing at Fort Myers’ JetBlue Park. One of Florida Grapefruit League’s newer—and 8

The Pittsburgh Pirates, meanwhile, play all of their home games at the newly minted LECOM Park in Bradenton (formerly McKechnie Field). Able to seat 8,500 fans, the Pirates’ first home game at the ballpark is scheduled for Feb. 24 against the New York Yankees.

Fans of the Philadelphia Phillies will want to head on over to the 8,272-seat Spectrum Field in Clearwater (formerly Bright House Field) to see their favorite Major League Baseball team host a game. Home spring training games for the Phillies begin on Feb. 24 against the Baltimore Orioles and end on March 27 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phillies will also play the University of Tampa at a home exhibition game on Feb. 22.

Allegiant passengers traveling to Sarasota can catch the Baltimore Orioles playing at their spring training facility, Ed Smith Stadium, which can seat 7,500 people. The Orioles’ first home game is scheduled against the Tampa Bay Rays on Feb. 23.

The 2018 spring training season also marks the end of an era for the Atlanta Braves, as it will be the final time fans can watch the team host a game at the 9,500-seat Champion Stadium at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee. The team broke ground on a new facility in south Sarasota County in October and will move to North Port for the 2019 spring training season. The Braves kick off their final string of home games at their spring training ballpark for the past 21 years when they play the Washington Nationals on Feb. 26. Other Florida Grapefruit League ballparks include Publix Field at Lakeland’s Joker Marchant Stadium, home to the Detroit Tigers;

ocated approximately 45 minutes from Orlando, Sanford may be close to the Theme Park Capital of the World, but the charming Central Florida city feels worlds away. Offering guests plenty of things to do, from awesome outdoor adventures to shopping in its quaint downtown, Allegiant passengers are sure to fall in love with the historic, waterfront gateway city. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a frequent guest, no trip to the area is complete without stopping by the Historic Sanford Welcome Center downtown (sanfordwelcomecenter.com), a Visit Florida Partner/Certified Travel Information Center. The Sanford Tourism Office opened on Dec. 2, 2017, as a way to help visitors find fun things to do while visiting the city. they can also ask the helpful representatives on site for dining, shopping and attraction recommendations based on their personal interests. Additionally, guests can connect to free Wi-Fi and safely leave their luggage if they want to explore the city before their hotel room is ready. Complimentary trolley service is offered, too, from the Historic Sanford Welcome Center to other stops around downtown, as well as Sanford’s Amtrak Auto Train and SunRail stations, making it easy for guests to get around town. The Welcome Center is also a place that Amtrak AutoTrain passengers can use to safely leave their luggage if they want to explore the city before the AutoTrain departs. Free Wi-Fi is also offered to all visitors of the Welcome Center. Guests visiting the area will also want to download the free Sanford365 app, which provides users with a complete calendar of events right at their fingertips. The city is constantly hosting special events, like the Sanford Art Walk held every third Saturday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. (sanfordartwalk.com). The event begins at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center with exhibits and art demonstrations that change monthly featured in nearby galleries and businesses. A juried art show inside the Welcome Center typically features 15 to 25 pieces of art on display that tie into that month’s art walk theme. February also marks the return of the popular Love Your Shorts Film Festival (loveyourshorts. com). WALK THIS WAY A HIKER’S GUIDE TO OCALA/MARION COUNTY By Heather Turk

T

here’s no better way to experience the beauty of Ocala/Marion County than on one of its hiking trails. The Central Florida destination boasts several centrally located parks that offer miles of trails to explore its native flora and fauna. In fact, the area is home to so many trails that the Ocala/Marion County Visitors and Convention Bureau has created an interactive map on its website (ocalamarion. com) highlighting some of the unique options.

SILVER RIVER CONNECTOR One of the older trails built along the Cross Florida Greenway, this 1.5-mile trail in Silver Springs showcases the changing habitats along the stretch of public land between County Road 315 and Ocklawaha River. The first half mile, also open to cyclists, winds between pines and cabbage palms. Beyond the “No Bikes” sign, a footpath continues beneath ancient live oaks. A large pond can also be found along the shaded trail.

DUNNELLON PARK TRAILS’ BLUE RUN This paved trail connects to the 2.5-mile linear Dunnellon Trail on the Cross Florida Greenway. Once there, the Pond Trail and Sandhill Loop Trail offer a gentle stroll in the hardwood forests with helpful informative stops pointing out natural communities and wildlife that thrives along the river basin.

FORT KING NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND VISITOR CENTER More than 1.5 miles of trails are found in this 38-acre Ocala park, once a major military post during the Second Seminole War. However, it’s the 1-mile perimeter loop with 23 stops that’s a true favorite with history buffs, as hikers can learn detailed historical information through a self-guided cell phone tour. 20

One of Marion County’s most popular places to hike, this well-established trail network features five different trails, including the 1.7-mile Sandhill Trail that goes through some the park’s longleaf pine uplands. There’s also the 1.9-mile Swamp Trail and 1.3-mile River Trail, both of which begin in the uplands before transitioning to wetland habitats. Guests can not only see a wide variety of birds and wildlife on all five trails, but the Swamp and River Trails also offer scenic overlooks of Silver River. On the weekend, hikers can visit the park’s Silver River Museum & Environmental Education Center for a nominal fee, too, which features exhibits relating to both Marion County and Florida history as well as Florida geology, paleontology, archaeology and natural history.

FARLOW’S BY THE WATER

Now serving Pork Tacos for lunch, this waterfront Caribbean restaurant in Englewood recently expanded its taco options. Made from pork shoulder that’s been marinated for 24 hours, then slow roasted and served in corn and flour tortillas topped with fresh shredded cabbage, aged sharp cheddar cheese, sundried tomato aioli and the restaurant’s house jicama slaw, the Pork Tacos join the popular Goat and Fish Tacos already on the lunch menu. The Goat Tacos—fresh goat tenderloins marinated in classic West Indian spices for 24 hours then slow cooked—come with cilantro goat cheese, caramelized balsamic onions and a mango and jicama slaw, while the lightly blackened grouper Fish Tacos are served with a tropical kiwi pico de gallo, shredded cabbage and a house Caribbean mango remoulade. farlowsonthewater.com

SANDBAR TIKI & GRILLE

One of the restaurant's specialties, this Engelwood hangout on Manasota Key serves a wide variety of Tiki-Tacos throughout the day for guests to savor. Diners get to choose their own protein (haddock, grouper, mahi-mahi, scallops, shrimp, chicken or ahi tuna) and preparation style (grilled, fried or blackened), then have their selection cooked to perfection. Proteins come wrapped in a warm flour tortilla, topped with a Mexican blend of shredded cheese and laid in a bed of diced tomatoes and lettuce. While none of the options disappoint, the Shrimp Tiki-Tacos have long been a guest favorite. sandbartikigrille.com

BOBBY JONES GOLF CLUB A favorite with golfers since 1927, this public course in Sarasota has challenged such notable players in the past as Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour and even the “Babe” himself, George Herman Ruth. Named for the legendary Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., the 45-hole municipal facility features two 18-hole championship courses and

a 9-hole executive course situated on 325 acres of virgin meadowland. While the par-71, 6,032yard American Course is most popular with seniors, women and golfers who prefer varied terrain, the par-72, 6,710-yard British Course is preferred by long hitting low handicappers. Lessons are available, too, from 2011 PGA teacher of the year, Christian Martin. bobbyjonesgolfclub.com

HERON CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Having recently finished a $1 million-plus renovation complete with rebuilt bunkers and new ultradwarf TifEagle bermudagrass, this semi-private club in North Port features three 9-hole courses designed by Arthur Hills: the Oaks, the Marsh and the Creek. Each championship course is situated high above the surrounding landscape, so golfers will experience varying wind conditions sure to challenge even the most skilled player. The club is also home to one of Sarasota County’s top practice facilities, boasting 72 hitting stations, three bunkered chipping and pitching greens and four practice putting greens. heroncreekgcc.com

UNIVERSITY PARK COUNTRY CLUB Bobby Jones Golf Club has been a Sarasota favorite since 1927

Heron Creek Golf & Country Club's 12-acre learning center

Providing an exhilarating golf experience against the stunning backdrop of native Florida, the championship golf course at this semi-private country club will test even the best of players. Designed by Ron Garl, the unique course features 27 holes with each set of nine holes having its own distinct characteristics and challenges. Many of the holes feature fairways lined with trees and natural Florida vegetation, and while water is visible on a number of holes, it really only comes into play on a dozen or so. With six sets of tees, anyone—regardless of their skill level—can enjoy a round of golf. Players who are truly serious about improving their game, though, can enroll in a clinic at the on-site Golf Academy, which is open to nonmembers. universitypark-fl.com SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

hen they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, certainly they have Florida’s SarasotaBradenton breakfast eateries in mind. Visit these four local restaurants that think outside of the egg for a creative eye-opening start to your day.

ANOTHER BROKEN EGG

Sure, it has “egg” right there in its name, but this Siesta Key-born mini-chain hands you a menu that travels the country to bring you the best wake-up traditions. Have a seat (with your pooch if you would like) on the spacious porch and start with a Tomatillo Mary or Salted Caramel Latte. Among its more classic selections of omelets, pancakes and benedicts, try some true originals: Lemon Blueberry Goat Cheese Pancakes, Lobster & Brie Omelet, Black Bean Benedict or Crab Cakes & Fried Green Tomatoes. Something healthy? Opt for the Skinny Omelet or Salmon Power Bowl. anotherbrokenegg.com

STATION 400

The original Station 400 downtown Sarasota occupies a reconstructed historic train station, so it is fitting that its tagline reads “Start Your Morning on the Right Track.” Inside is cozy, but the open courtyard is pleasant this time of year. Traditional fare has a Euro streak with

ANNA MARIA ISLAND BEACH CAFÉ The food concession at Manatee County Park on Anna Maria Island has grown from a local breakfast secret to a popular toes-in-the-sand dining spot. Its all-you-can-eat pancake special, including three sausages for $5.99, charmed fans from the beginning. You can also order from a medley of hardy home-style classics, such as country-fried steak, their Denver omelet and chipped beef with toast. Or eggs, of course! amibeachcafe.com

BLUE DOLPHIN CAFÉ

With friendly, cheerful locations on Longboat Key and St. Armands Circle, Blue Dolphin satisfies a.m. urges with mugs of steaming coffee and homemade goodness. When you are craving something outside of the egg, skip down to its pancake and waffles menu, or have a look at the day’s seasonal specials. Regulars include pumpkin pancakes, apple cinnamon pancakes, banana granola pancakes, cheese blintzes and Belgian waffles. Or, go for the Nova cold smoked salmon and bagel platter. bdc.jahmobileapp.com

AN ATTRACTION THAT MAKES A SPLASH CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM CONTINUES TO GIVE HOPE TO INJURED MARINE LIFE By Heather Turk

learwater Marine Aquarium might be best known from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ "Dolphin Tale" movies, but there’s nothing like visiting the popular tourist attraction to see what makes the working marine rescue center a real star.

Photos courtesy of Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Not your typical aquarium by any means, Clearwater Marine Aquarium focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine life. Visitors can actually walk through its animal hospital and see into its state-of-the-art surgical suite, where they might see a rehabilitating sea turtle receiving fluids, having x-rays taken or undergoing some other medical procedure that’s often performed out of the public eye at other animal care facilities.

rescued animals residing at the aquarium include Ricky the pelican (who stole the spotlight in the "Dolphin Tale" movies as Rufus), two North American river otters, two nurse sharks and an assortment of other marine life. For those who really want to dive into what it’s like working at an aquarium, a variety of interactive experiences are available as well, including stingray feedings, behind the scenes tours and a 90-minute Sea Life Safari Boat Tour. Passengers can actually witness data collection in action as the aquarium’s staff performs a net pull out in intracoastal waters and passes around the sea creatures caught to guests before releasing them back into the water.

Guests can also visit the many animals the aquarium provides long-term resident care for: those whose injuries were too severe and limited their ability to function and survive in the wild. These animals include, of course, the star of "Dolphin Tale", Winter, a female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap line and now wears a prosthetic tail to swim. Winter isn’t the only dolphin who calls Clearwater Marine Aquarium home, either. Visitors will also see Winter’s costar from "Dolphin Tale 2", Hope, in the same pool as Winter, and a male dolphin named Nicholas on the stranding deck. Other

In its quest to help as many animals as possible, Clearwater Marine Aquarium is in the process of a major expansion over the next two years that will not only triple its rescued dolphin habitat space, but also add more hospital facilities for its rescued marine life. The non-profit aquarium will remain open to the public throughout the expansion process so that it can continue to educate guests on marine and environmental conservation.

FIVE MUST-DO’S IN TARPON SPRINGS GREEK FOOD, FLORIDA KITSCH AND SPONGES GALORE AWAIT VISITORS By Marcia Biggs

hen it comes to a guaranteed winner for a fun day for all ages, the historic Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is a sure bet. Just 20 minutes north of Clearwater, Tarpon Springs was founded by Greeks who came in the early 1900s when an abundance of natural sponge beds were discovered. Since then, generations of Greek families have settled here to work in the sponge industry and establish a thriving tourism district on the riverfront. Here are five must-do’s on a visit to Tarpon Springs:

HOP ABOARD A SPONGE DIVING TOUR

The one-hour guided boat tours are a great way for families to get out into the crystal blue Gulf. Learn all about the history of sponge diving in Tarpon Springs and watch as a suited diver magically fishes up sponges from the sandy bottom. You will never feel the same about sponges again!

shops, art galleries and a variety of restaurants. If you’re lucky, there may be an arts and crafts festival taking place, one of many events happening downtown throughout the year.

SAY A PRAYER

Take a peek into St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral downtown to admire the magnificently painted dome, marble alters and columns, and stained glass windows. In the front, the bronze statue of a youth emerging from the water clutching a cross honors the annual Feast of the Epiphany cross dive that happens every January. Visit spongedocks.net for more information on Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks.

EAT LIKE A GREEK

Everyone eats when they come to the Sponge Docks. Savor the flavors of traditional fare such as moussaka, pastitsio and lamb with orzo at one of numerous eateries. Start with saganaki, the famous flaming cheese appetizer, and finish with a baklava or other delicious Greek dessert. Hellas Bakery is the ultimate pastry and coffee stop.

Dining and shopping along Dodecanese Boulevard

SHOP TILL YOU DROP

Dodecanese Boulevard along the riverfront is lined with kitschy shops brimming with Florida souvenirs, shells, straw hats, cheap jewelry, olive oils and, you guessed it, sponges of all sizes and varieties.

Avoid the weekend crowds at the Sponge Docks and head into downtown Tarpon Springs. Stroll along Tarpon Avenue, where you’ll find antique 50

COOL CONCOCTIONS SAVOR SOME OF NEW ORLEANS’ BEST WINTER COCKTAILS By Heather Turk

here’s nothing like enjoying a hot toddy or a spiked hot chocolate when it’s cold outside—unless, of course, you’re in New Orleans. The city’s many restaurants offer a variety of tasty cocktails that are ideal to enjoy when it’s cold out, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “cool concoctions.”

COMPÈRE LAPIN

Known for its robust dishes that meld the flavors of chef Nina Compton’s Caribbean upbringing and love for French and Italian cuisine while highlighting the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana’s indigenous ingredients, this beloved restaurant is found in The Old No. 77 Hotel on Tchoupitoulas Street. The lineup of signature cocktails by cocktail maven Abigail Gullo is thoughtful yet unpretentious. During the winter months, guests can enjoy such seasonal creations as the Gentleman’s Caller made with gin, sherry, Aperol and génépy, as well as cold-weather favorites like the Chin Music made with Irish whiskey, ginger, lemon, vermouth and absinthe. comperelapin.com

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

Allegiant makes a “last wish” trip the best! When Louise was diagnosed with end-stage brain cancer, she decided she wanted time with her four grandchildren in Florida. Upon knowing this, the staff was impressive. The flight attendants “wined and dined” both us grandmas at no expense to us. Their assistance was compassionate and kind. It was a great trip made easy by a caring airline staff. Thank you!

– Rosemary N, Ohio

I would like to compliment the Allegiant staff for making my flight very pleasant and enjoyable. I would like to single out Elizabeth working the baggage check-in out of Allentown. She took the time to do some extra research for me and was very patient, polite and, of course, went that extra mile for us.

- Thomas B, Pennsylvania

Biggest compliments! I was flying from Fort Lauderdale to Asheville and arrived late to the airport and would have missed my flight; however, the wonderful Allegiant agent ran with me to the gate carrying my heaviest bag. I was running with no shoes [from TSA], pants falling because of no belt and she carried my bag all the way down the jet way. I was so overwhelmed and thankful.

– Justin M, Florida

Shawn taking advantage of his flight benefits

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Q&A WITH SHAWN HACKLER, FLIGHT DISPATCHER/ INSTRUCTOR (HQ) By Kerry McGee, Staff Writer, Editor

When did you join Allegiant? In 2015, I joined Allegiant as a Flight Dispatcher, and about a year ago I became a Dispatch Instructor. I worked in the casino industry for ten years until I lost my job in 2014. When I got my pink slip I decided it was time to make a huge change. I knew Las Vegas had a growing and successful hometown airline, so I went back to school and got my Dispatcher’s license and started my career with Allegiant.

Photos courtesy of Shawn Hackler

What does a dispatcher do? We create the “game plan” for every flight. This includes evaluating the weather, reviewing air traffic control (ATC) constraints, such as traffic jams (yes, they exist in the sky) or airspace closures, and analyzing passenger loads, runway conditions, and anything else that impacts the safety and comfort of our travelers. We also calculate the fuel load, build the route, and add alternate airports, if needed. We determine aircraft performance and configuration to ensure the safest and most efficient operation for the flight. We then send our plan to the captain and ATC to execute and monitor the progress of the flight. We are the eyes and ears of the flight crew until everyone reaches their destination. How else does your job impact our travelers? Flights can’t leave without our sign-off. Every day presents a series of unique challenges that, without dispatchers, could keep planes on the ground. We want our travelers to make it to their destination with as few delays as

possible, so we are focused on getting our planes in the sky. What about your job gets you excited to go to work? I work with a great group of people throughout the company and we share knowledge to help put the puzzle pieces together. Every day I walk away having learned something new. If you could go on vacation anywhere in the U.S.A. where would you go? New Orleans! I’d love to ride The St. Charles Line (the oldest running streetcar line), tour the French Quarter and eat food at the local spots. Have you been able to take advantage of your flight benefits? Yes! My wife and I have been to Bellingham, Washington. to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. I’ve visited family in Idaho Falls, Idaho, seen Northern California and Reno, Nevada. Since I live in a destination city, it is fun to take a quick trip to our passengers’ hometowns. There are always great getaways available. What is your Las Vegas “locals” tip? There is a ton of locally-produced live entertainment just a stone’s throw from the Las Vegas Strip. From family-oriented musicals and classic works to live music, burlesque and sketch comedy, there is something for everyone. Once you’ve had a chance to experience the big budget performances, see what’s playing around the valley, and join the locals at one of the dozens of intimate venues. SPOTLIGHT

Wish Kid William gets a tour of the flight deck before take off

HELPING TO MAKE MORE THAN WISHES COME TRUE By Christoper Lewis

I

t ends up as something more than it seems. At first glance, it may appear as just a nice trip to a theme park or meeting one’s favorite celebrity. But when granted, a wish to a critically ill child means so much more than that.

For a parent, it’s hope and a chance to witness their child enjoy their childhood once again. For the volunteers and everyone involved in making these wishes come true, it’s amazing moment to witness and something proud to be a part of.

To the child, it serves as a beacon that drives them forward, spurs courage and inspires them on even the toughest days.

Nearly 80% of wishes require air travel, and Allegiant is proud to play a role in helping them come true. Since 2012, Allegiant has partnered with Make-AWish®, providing more than 900 wish flights to help make dreams come true for children across the country. “Our partnership with Make-A-Wish over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Our crews love interacting with wish families and work hard to make every wish flight an unforgettable experience,” says Hilarie Grey, Allegiant’s Director of Corporate Communications. “From our very first wish kid, Jamie, to the more than 900 kids we’ve flown since, it’s an honor make these trips of a lifetime possible.” Allegiant also donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Kids Snack Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. Additionally, Allegiant in 2017 welcomed Make-AWish Southern Nevada to our corporate headquarters campus in Las Vegas, sponsoring a $1.5 million renovation of space, and a $1 per year lease.
