There are few destinations serving up a slice of Americana quite like the Smoky Mountain area. One day can be spent at the baseball field watching the Tennessee Smokies, and the next on a raft down the Pigeon River. It’s where centuries of tradition are celebrated by local distillers making moonshine with the fruit of the land, where musicians play bluegrass in the streets and the gorgeous scenery of the Smoky Mountains are everywhere the eye can see. Whether it’s at a rope course on the mountainside or at an amusement park in the middle of the country, there’s an adventure or two to be had in the Smokies. smokiesfun.com

Explore Tennessee

HEAD FOR THE MOUNTAINS SUMMER IN THE SMOKIES By Sean Davies

Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains lies a collection of cities and towns offering an authentic Tennessee experience. The breathtaking scenic beauty of America’s most visited national park is complemented by the depth of history and culture of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville, where moonshine and music mingle with natural splendor and outdoor adventures. Gatlinburg is the closest to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which may explain its charming, mountain-town feel. Here, the bucolic charm of the mountainside is celebrated at outdoor adventure parks like Anakeesta. After taking a Chondola from downtown Gatlinburg to the summit of the mountain, guests can walk along the canopy of the forest and search for animals below, or race down the mountainside on dueling ziplines. anakeesta.com Nantahala Outdoor Center offers guests the chance to raft down the Pigeon River with two sections of the river to choose from: one perfect for all ages, and the other acting as a bit of a challenge. Both offer excellent views of the

forested area, and can be combined with a guided hike for a day of outdoor adventure. noc.com Gatlinburg also offers a host of other activities that don’t involve trekking out of the city. Both Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and Ripley's Marvelous Mirror Maze & Candy Factory (ripleys. com/gatlinburg) offer a respite for families who’ve run out of sunscreen, while distilleries like Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery provide a taste of strong Southern traditions. olesmoky.com Southern cuisine is another tradition that’s ingrained in Gatlinburg. Local restaurants are often rewarded for their exceptional flavors, like Delauders Smoky Mountain BBQ, which has won accolades for its pulled pork, ribs, brisket and sausage, not to mention the customer service, which is always exemplary of southern hospitality. delaudersbbq.com Nearby, Pigeon Forge celebrates the unique history of the area with storied attractions like The Old Mill. Tracing its origin back to 1830, The Old Mill has had its hands in events from the founding of the city, including the Civil War, where the owner secretly made Union Soldiers’ uniforms; the introduction of electricity, where it provided power to residents; and even the Great Depression, through which it triumphed thanks to the help of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was he who created the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, drawing tourism to the once struggling area. The Old Mill still functions as a gristmill, and products like flour and cornmeal can be d e s t i n at i o n ▪ T e n n e s s e e

purchased on-site, or eaten in a dish from The Old Mill Restaurant next door, like the corn chowder or pecan pie. old-mill.com The grain from The Old Mill is even utilized by nearby Old Forge Distillery, which takes locally sourced ingredients to make moonshine, bourbon and a host of other spirits. Travelers can visit the distillery to see what new concoctions Head Distiller Keener Shanton is working on, tour the distillery and taste its wares. oldforgedistillery.com

The city of Pigeon Forge is also home to the world famous Dollywood, an amusement park dedicated to the great Dolly Parton. Where guests can ride on Lightning Rod, the world’s fastest wooden roller coaster, as well as over 40 other attractions, all infused with southern charm. Dollywood’s Splash Country Water Park is the perfect way to cool off in the summer, and from June 22 to Aug. 4, Dollywood hosts the Summer Celebration, with extended park hours and special events. dollywood.com Dolly Parton fans will also want to visit her hometown, Sevierville, where a bronze statue of the singer sits in the middle of the historic downtown district. Sevierville is also famous for fabulous shopping, with over 120 high end name brand retailers represented at two different outlet malls. Hungry travelers will be happy to know that Sevierville is home to several lovely restaurants like, Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant, which sits in the center of town, surrounded on all sides by orchards. Apple Fritters and Apple Juleps are just two of the highlights on a menu that hails the juicy fruit as king! applewoodfarmhouserestaurant.com The Tennessee Museum of Aviation (tnairmuseum. com), also located in Sevierville, has a vast collection of aircraft on display. Visitors can spend hours learning about the history of flight, with displays including vintage Warbirds, military vehicles, helicopters and more. The museum is a great way to start or finish a vacation in the Smoky Mountains, an area that celebrates its natural splendor and historic charm. smokiesfun.com D e s t i n at i o n ▪ T e n n e s s e e

Offering an authentic taste of the Northeastern United States, Downeast Charters isn’t your typical boat charter company.

get to choose their course and destination (within Downeast Charters’ guidelines) and can change their route or destination mid trip if they wish!

Located near Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, the family owned and operated company in Cape Haze offers Southwest Florida’s only custom Maine private yacht charter. The 30foot, Maine-built lobster yacht spent its first 23 years cruising the coast of Maine until Downeast Charters’ owner and captain, Jeff Chandonait, purchased it in the summer of 2018. He then moved the vessel down to Florida and began offering private customized cruises on it earlier this year to give the state’s many Northeast transplants a taste of home.

For guests who don’t have a particular destination in mind, Downeast Charters offers several different itineraries that take passengers everywhere from Boca Grande to Cabbage Key. Its signature trip, the four-hour Cayo Costa Cruiser, takes passengers out to beautiful Cayo Costa State Park to observe its wildlife. With advance notice, Downeast Charters can even serve Maine lobster rolls onboard for lunch or dinner. Taste buds will be treated to an authentic experience, as the Maine lobster meat is mixed fresh and the rolls are grilled just before being served. Diners will also get to enjoy two other Maine favorites with their sandwich: Fox Family Potato Chips and Moxie soda.

Unlike most other boat charter companies, Downeast Charters never has separate parties onboard its yacht at the same time. Each excursion is customized to one group at a time so parties can choose the departure and return times that best fit their schedule. Guests even

Although the Maine lobster roll meals cost an additional fee, complimentary snacks, water, soda and other non-alcoholic beverages are provided on all trips. Complimentary Mainemade condiments like sea salt, blueberry jam and blueberry honey are often available onboard, too. Guests are welcome to bring their own food, beer and wine as well, or they can visit a nearby restaurant once the yacht has reached its destination. Passengers will travel in comfort along the way, as the yacht’s sturdy hull not only provides a stable ride, but the vessel also has its own bathroom, heat, running water, oven and enclosed cabin to protect guests from any unexpected elements. There’s no better way for visitors to experience what a city’s dining scene has to offer than to eat where the locals go. Clearwater Beach isn’t just a great vacation destination because of its sugar white sand and turquoise waters. It’s also close to several islands that make perfect day trips for those who want to do a little island hopping during their stay. EGMONT KEY STATE PARK This remote island was once home to an active army base. Visitors can explore the three gun batteries that still remain on land or go snorkeling to see the two gun batteries that are now underwater. Hubbard’s Marina (hubbardsmarina.com) not only offers daily ferries to the island from Fort De Soto Park’s bay pier, but also hour-long guided snorkel tours of

the underwater gun batteries and nearby grass flats where manatees are sometimes spotted. Island guests love searching for shells and shark teeth while walking on the beach, too, and taking photos of the gopher tortoises that reside near the trails and lighthouse. floridastateparks.org/ parks-and-trails/egmont-key-state-park HONEYMOON AND CALADESI ISLAND STATE PARKS Once rated the No. 1 beach in the U.S. by “Dr. Beach,” Caladesi Island is the perfect place to go swimming, fishing and boating. Kayak rentals are available so visitors can paddle through the park’s mangrove forest looking for birds like blue herons and bald eagles. There’s also a threemile hiking trail guests can birdwatch from. Before heading off to Caladesi Island, spend some time on Honeymoon Island and learn about the history, flora and fauna that make up both parks at the Rotary Centennial Nature Center, and rent a bicycle to go birdwatching on the 1.3mile paved bike bath. floridastateparks.org SHELL KEY While this undeveloped barrier island may be a sanctuary for several types of birds, it’s also a popular place to go swimming, shelling and camping. One of the prettiest beaches around, Shell Key even has a lagoon that’s great for kids to swim in since it doesn’t have much of a current. Hubbard’s Marina offers multiple ferries from the Fort De Soto boat ramp that go to and from the island each day and can even pick up those with a free camping permit on a different date. Additionally, it runs ferries Monday through Friday that include an extra stop at a sandbar located just west of the island that’s popular with party boats on the weekend. pinellascounty.org/ park/managedlands/skp.htm e xc u r s i o n s ▪ 3 1

Considering Clearwater Beach is basically a giant sandbox that can entertain children for hours on end, it should come as no surprise that the area is very family friendly — especially when it comes to its restaurants. Most people visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see Winter and Hope, its two famous residents who starred in the “Dolphin Tale” movies, but this working marine hospital offers so much more. The facility is home to dolphins, river otters, stingrays and other marine life, and offers opportunities to learn about their important programs for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of water-dwelling animals. Several unique and totally enthralling activities for youngsters are offered at an additional fee, all designed to encourage interest in marine life and conservation efforts. seewinter.com

heartwarming and thrilling. Animal care providers guide children through areas of food preparation, animal enrichment and exhibit maintenance as they devote one hour each to understand and interact with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, great white pelicans and North American river otters. Time is allocated to feed the animals and for photo ops, where proud parents can capture the memories. SEA LIFE SAFARI This 90-minute cruise departs at the rear of the aquarium and floats along the intercoastal waterways of Clearwater Bay. Narrated by a marine life specialist, passengers can spot brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills and other seabirds before stopping briefly at a small island to search for shells. On the return trip, marine life experts net local aquatic life for research and teach passengers about the creatures before they are released back into the water. This excursion runs several times a day and is suitable for all ages. SHARK EXPERIENCE How many kids are lucky enough to meet and interact with real sharks in a safe environment? Children ages 7 and over can do just that during Shark Experience, a 30-minute interactive session with Thelma and Louise, the two resident nurse sharks. Veteran animal handlers lead the experience, teaching kids all about these highly misunderstood creatures, and might even allow lucky participants the chance to feed them fish, squid and shrimp. Kids are sure to gasp in surprise when sharks swim right under their seating area and will forever remember the day they touched a real shark. at t r ac t i o n s ▪ 3 9

Beer aficionados traveling to St. Pete have come to the right place. Part of Florida’s “Gulp Coast,” which runs all the way north to Tarpon Springs, the bustling city is home to several breweries offering an array of local beers on tap. Many of its breweries are located within walking distance from one another, too, so beer drinkers can go brewery hopping to get a taste of what St. Pete’s thriving craft brew scene has to offer. 3 DAUGHTERS BREWING One of Florida’s fastest growing regional breweries, this family-friendly establishment was named after its founders’ daughters, whose handprints can be found on the bar in its 60-seat tasting room. Guests of all ages are welcome to enjoy a bite from the brewery’s on-site food truck while playing an assortment of games or enjoying live music every Friday through Sunday night. Famous for its citrusy Beach Blonde Ale, the brewery offers 40 rotating taps showcasing more than 200 recipes for beer, hard seltzer, hard cider and even red and white sangria. Adults can raise their glass knowing they’re supporting a good cause, too, as the money the brewery makes selling spent grain to farmers is donated to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic to help families in need. 3dbrewing.com CAGE BREWING Once caged off in the back of a Treasure Island restaurant (hence the name), this microbrewery has grown into one of St. Pete’s most popular hangouts. Guests can play foosball, cornhole, pinball and even old-school video games while savoring a wide range of brews, with 18 of the brewery’s craft beers on tap. INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG AVIATORS By Andrew Porrello

Aviation is facing a pilot and maintenance technician shortage over the next 20 years. As many in the industry’s workforce reach mandatory retirement age and more aircraft take to the skies, there will be a demand for more than 200,000 pilots and 189,000 maintenance technicians in North America alone.

parts to ensure that students interested in an aircraft maintenance career have the opportunity to learn and practice their skills in an immersive, hands-on environment. And we also funded two Allegiant Careers in Aviation scholarships that were awarded to graduating seniors pursuing an education in aeronautical sciences.

That’s why Allegiant has actively embarked on initiatives to create pilot pipelines, establish mentorship programs and offer scholarships to the next generation of aviation professionals around the country. We also support programs and activities that encourage youth to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Allegiant’s pipeline program grants prospective pilots the chance to train at a smaller carrier while also being mentored by some of our top pilots. These student pilots have exclusive access to our training courses and, many times, can experience valuable training time in our state-of-the-art Airbus simulators. Those who complete the program are guaranteed an interview and given preference for hiring as positions become available.

Our goal in promoting STEM education across the country is to ensure that today’s youth are inspired to pursue a career in the aeronautical sciences. We have also established scholarship funds in Fargo, North Dakota and sponsored elementary and middle school robotics teams so they could compete in the world championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

Do you know of an aviation program in your community that could benefit from Allegiant’s support? If so, reach out to us at corporate. giving@allegiantair.com.

In Allegiant’s hometown of Las Vegas, we partner with Rancho High School’s aviation magnet program in an effort to help students continue their aviation studies after graduation, whether they want to be pilots or work in maintenance. To inspire students, Allegiant hosted an “Aviation Day” at the high school where regional chief pilots, maintenance technicians and experts in other airline careers met with students to answer questions about aviation careers. We also donated over $400,000 worth of aircraft

SPORTS SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM By Kerry McGee

From seasonal intramural leagues to competitive marathons and casual non-profit walks, we take “work hard, play harder” literally. That’s why Allegiant funds teams and entry fees for our team members so they can unwind and have a little fun outside of work.

three years now! I love getting a chance to meet team members that I’d otherwise not have a chance to meet – including those working in the air and at the airport.” – Jerry Cooper, manager database admin.

“I started playing with the West Coast Allegiant Softball team in 2017. Getting out on the field each week has promoted a great work-life balance and a fun way to connect with not only our team members at headquarters, but also our pilots and flight attendants!” – Matt Bengtson, flight operations analyst and softball team captain.

“I love to participate in our softball team in Tampa/St. Pete. It allows me to get out of my comfort zone (I am not athletic at all!) and my regular routine. Our softball team has team members from stations, inflight, admin and many more departments that I see around every so often. During our game time, I get to slow down and play ball with some pretty hard-working and amazing folks. “ – Veronica Carrillo, inflight base supervisor

Empowering hundreds of our team members each year, our Sports Sponsorship Program has become a testament to our culture and a fun way for us to help support our most important asset - our team members. As we grow, it’s important to provide opportunities for them to engage with each other outside of the workplace. “Thanks to our Sports Sponsorship Program, I’ve been able to play on our basketball team for

Taking time to do something fun (and healthy) has given our teams a point of pride. Whether they are walking in a 5k to support Make-AWish or competing in more than 40 events during Corporate Challenge (Olympic-style games hosted by the City of Las Vegas), there is something for all of our team members.
