LAS VEGAS BECOMES A CULINARY DESTINATION THANKS TO SPAGO By Jack Bulavsky

n December 11, 1992, Chef Wolfgang Puck opened Spago in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. That day still remains the spark that ignited the city’s fine dining phenomenon. “We took a chance coming here 25 years ago when the city had never been exposed to fine dining,” said the celebrity chef. “Some questioned our decision, but within a few months we were busy day and night. Now, with six restaurants in the city, I’m still excited by our growth as we continue to be a trendsetter in cuisine, service and style.” The famed restaurateur sees Las Vegas as a playground for innovation and over-the-top concepts.
pride ourselves in sourcing the best available ingredients.” Those ingredients can be found on the restaurant’s most popular menu item, HouseSmoked Salmon Pizza. Topped with dill crème fraîche, chives, shallots and salmon caviar, it is synonymous with Spago. How was it born? “It came about late one night when several of us were in the kitchen at Spago in West Hollywood,” he remembered. “We wanted lox and bagels, but were out of brioche rolls, so we made it with pizza dough and caviar, and it’s lived on our menus ever since. It’s a delicious thrill for guests who have never tried it.” For more information on Spago visit wolfgangpuck.com/dining/spago-lv.
According to Chef Wolfgang Puck, the goal from the beginning was to design an upscale menu with selections already popular at Spago Beverly Hills and present them to Las Vegas diners who were only familiar with buffets and steakhouses. “I think we did well by introducing global fusion food, along with American seasonal cuisine, that was comfortable and recognizable, yet refined and elegant,” he said. “Guests have become more health conscious and want to know where their food is coming from. That’s why we list farms and purveyors because we 10

Guests can choose from an assortment of luscious burgers, like the dry-aged Gold Standard topped with smoked bacon, aged goat cheddar cheese, tomato confit, baby arugula and garlic-chive aioli, and enjoy their selection with a “Bam-Boozled” Shake (the Frozen Grasshopper is divine!); non-beef burgers are available, too. Holsteins’ bold flavors carry over to its appetizers as well, particularly the tasty Buffalo Chicken Dip: shredded chicken breast mixed with ranch dressing, hot sauce and bleu cheese and served with tortilla chips. holsteinsburgers.com

“Mat Franco – Magic Reinvented Nightly” is a Las Vegas must-see magic production
LAS VEGAS’ NEWEST ICON OF MAGIC MAT FRANCO CEMENTS HIS LEGACY ON THE STRIP By Heather Turk
A
fter making history by being the first magician to ever win “America’s Got Talent,” it seemed only fitting for Mat Franco to headline his own show in the Entertainment Capital of the World. After all, almost all of the world’s greatest magicians have had long-running shows in Las Vegas, including one of Franco’s personal favorites, Lance Burton. However, even though he won over viewers’ hearts on television, Franco wasn’t quite prepared for just how well his show would be received when it debuted at The LINQ Hotel & Casino in 2015. Now performing inside the recently renamed Mat Franco Theater, “Mat Franco – Magic Reinvented Nightly” is a magic show unlike any other in Las Vegas. This family-friendly production features an innovative and immersive approach to magic that’s often led by audience participation, making no two shows ever the same.
Although Franco performed at a magic convention in Las Vegas when he was only 15 years old, he admitted that he never had his sights set on headlining his own production in town. “I didn’t think that was possible,” he stated. “It was too lofty a dream. Even when I was on ‘America’s Got Talent’ I didn’t think I was going to win. I was just hoping to get on one episode and have some cool footage to put on my website. It wasn’t until there were just two acts 26

left onstage and I was one of them that I realized in that moment, as we went to a commercial break, I had a 50/50 chance of winning.” Success hasn’t changed Franco’s humble nature, either. When asked what he’s hoping to accomplish next now that he has his own theater in Las Vegas named after him, Franco simply replied that his goal is just to continue to share his magic with others. “I just want to make people’s day a little better,” he said. “Mat Franco – Magic Reinvented Nightly” runs Friday through Tuesday at 7 p.m., with an additional 9:30 p.m. performance on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets start at $45, plus tax and fees. For more information, visit matfranco.com.

“I’m not trying to fool anyone or pull the wool over anyone’s eyes,” Franco explained. “There are no dancing girls or any other stereotype people think of when they think of a Las Vegas magic show. My show is the antithesis of that. It’s interactive and something people can relate to.”

On and off the dirt action during Wrangler National Finals Rodeo week is stunning, exciting and memorable
WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO PASSION IS THE DRIVING FORCE By Brian Hurlburt
Y
ou can’t fake passion, and when it comes to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas, the people behind the scenes are dedicated to offering up the world’s finest Western lifestyle experience.
so promoting the biggest week in all of rodeo comes naturally. When not operating a multimillion-dollar megaresort on the Las Vegas Strip, McBeath works on his own cattle ranch, so he knows all about the passion behind the rodeo.
Bill McBeath, President of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, is one of many Vegas power brokers who have deep roots in the cowboy lifestyle,
“I grew up hunting, fishing and ranching, and I am still a rancher to this day, so I have a deep appreciation for the Western lifestyle and rodeo people,” said McBeath, who operates the Cave Valley Ranch near Ely, Nevada, a cowboy town about 240 miles northeast of Las Vegas. “It’s something that has always been a part of my life, and it’s been very important to be a part of the Wrangler NFR. For those 10 days of the WNFR, the city is immersed in the cowboy lifestyle with everything that goes with it. The Wrangler NFR just happens to be the center of that Western universe.”
The nightly National Finals Rodeo Buckle Ceremony at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa
At the core of rodeo week in Las Vegas is the action inside and outside of the Thomas & Mack Center 34
Everywhere you turn during Wrangler NFR, scheduled for December 7-16, you will see the town has gone country. In addition to the Cosmopolitan, there are 23 other official hotel sponsors. Together, the properties will host more than 150 events during rodeo week. It’s that kind of passion and legitimacy that has allowed rodeo week in Las Vegas to grow to such a massive stature. The on-the-dirt action takes place at the Thomas & Mack Center, where the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls lay it on the line, but there is plenty to do off the dirt before and after each

go-round. Kick up your heels at The ‘Shoe, Bull ‘n Barrell Saloon, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association ProRodeo Zone and much more. Major events surrounding the Wrangler NFR include Cowboy Christmas and the RMEF Hunter and Outdoor Christmas Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center, official viewing and after parties such as the nightly National Finals Rodeo Buckle Ceremony at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa, and the Downtown Hoedown on December 6 at Fremont Street Experience, which officially kicks off the Wrangler NFR.
Tie-down roping is a split-second event and Caleb Smidt is one of the best at the art form
and the animal’s performance. To earn a qualified score, the cowboy must use only one hand and stay aboard a bucking horse or bull for a full eight seconds. If the rider inadvertently touches the animal, himself or any of his equipment with his free hand, he is disqualified. In saddle bronc and bareback riding, a cowboy must “mark out” his horse; that is, he must exit the chute with his spurs set above the horse’s shoulders and hold them there until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump out of the chute.
For more Information, go to NFRExperience.com.
Judges score qualified rides and a perfect score is 100 points.

TIMED EVENTS
There’s rodeo and then there’s the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (Wrangler NFR). When the Super Bowl of Rodeos comes to town, Las Vegas goes cowboy, with events and entertainment for everyone. Here are some inside tips from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association experts to help you better understand the basics of this exciting sport. Professional rodeo action consists of two types of competitions: roughstock events and timed events.
ROUGHSTOCK EVENTS Bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding are roughstock events, and judges score qualified riders based on both their performance
Steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing and steer roping are timed events, where contestants compete against the clock, as well as against the other competitors. A contestant’s goal is to post the fastest time in his or her event. In steer wrestling and the roping events, calves and steers are allowed a head start. The competitor, on horseback, starts in a three-sided fenced area called a box. The fourth side opens into the arena. Competitors then try to “corral” with a rope or a tackle in the quickest time. For barrel racing, cowgirls and horses race into the arena and maneuver around three barrels to see who can record the fastest time. Rodeo 101. It’s that simple! 35

The D in Downtown Las Vegas offers a nightly viewing party 36
“How far the rodeo has come since it first started is the first thing that comes to my mind,” said Scott Sibella, MGM vice president and chief operating officer. “It’s such a great event for Las Vegas, during a period that was extremely slow many years ago. It’s been an honor being part of the planning team and making the rodeo what it is today. It’s much more than a rodeo; it’s become an event throughout the city. What I tell people is to enjoy all the events that are planned over the 10 days, from shopping, entertainment, viewing parties and the other great events that take place during the rodeo.” In addition to all of this nightly action, be sure to visit Cowboy Christmas and the RMEF Hunter and Outdoor Christmas Expo. You had better start planning your daily and nightly goings on while you are in Las Vegas for rodeo’s biggest show! Complete schedules for each event are available at NFRExperience.com.

COWBOY CHRISTMAS A TREASURE TROVE FOR RODEO FANS By Brian Hurlburt
F
ans and retailers flock to the Las Vegas Convention Center for the spectacle that is Cowboy Christmas and the RMEF Hunter and Outdoor Christmas Expo, scheduled for December 7-16. More than 230,000 rodeo fans and Western lifestyle aficionados attended the 10-day event in 2016, and with an increase in patronage expected in 2017, some might be wondering what all of the excitement is about. Saddle up and ride over to the Las Vegas Convention Center to experience the unmatched smorgasbord of authentic Western lifestyle gear, clothing, gift ideas, furniture and much, much more. In all, more than 400 vendors exhibit throughout more than 900,000 square feet of expo space. Vendors love the event as much—or more— than attendees because business booms, and they get to see old friends each December. The vendors also deeply appreciate the support of the customers and know many on a personal basis. Carlos Duarte Jr., son to the owner of Carlos Silver, a company that specializes in custom sterling silver jewelry and buckles as well as handmade leather-braided bracelets and
signature watches, said Cowboy Christmas is “The Super Bowl of Western shopping.” “What has made our years at Cowboy Christmas successful is meeting new customers and seeing old friends,” Duarte Jr. said. “Over the years, many of our clients have grown in their lives and careers and shared their success and stories with us at Cowboy Christmas. Many have gone to college, become Western professionals such as veterinarians, agriculture businessmen and women, and become cowboy and cowgirl legends. Some, like three-time NFR all-around world champion Joe Beaver, stop by every year to visit.” Besides amazing shopping, other highlights include the expanded Junior National Finals Rodeo in the Wrangler Arena and hourly autograph signings with some of rodeo’s biggest stars. Plus, fans can relax and experience the Coors Rodeo Saloon, Rodeo Way, the Social Lounge and Great Wall of Rodeo presented by the Calgary Stampede. “Rodeo Live” presented by Rodeo Houston is also filmed each day. Country music star Gary Allan also returns to Las Vegas for his third consecutive year of playing Hard Rock Hotel & Casino during NFR (hardrockhotel.com). Over at T-Mobile Arena, the King of Country Music, George Strait, wraps up his extended 2017 engagement at the venue with two performances during NFR, December 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. (t-mobilearena.com). Fans will hear a selection of Strait’s greatest hits, like “Troubadour” and “Fool Hearted Memory,” in what’s guaranteed to be a concert experience they won’t soon forget—especially since Strait stepped away from touring in 2014 with The Cowboy Rides Away tour. Proving there’s more to post-rodeo entertainment than just country music, Blue Collar Comedy Tour funnyman Bill Engvall has also become a staple of the Las Vegas entertainment scene during NFR. That tradition continues for its eighth year on December 15 at 9 p.m. when Engvall once again performs his signature brand of clean, relatable stand-up comedy at Treasure Island (treasureisland.com). Of course, this is just a sampling of what rodeo fans can experience after catching all of the action at Thomas & Mack Center. The city hosts several can’t-miss acts, like “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” inside The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (thecolosseum.com), sure to wrangle in the rodeo crowd following each day’s events. A rodeo favorite for the past two years, this star-studded production features more than 30 of the country superstars’ greatest hits—like Reba’s “Fancy” and Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”—several of which they perform together during the 2-hour experience. Although the residency is a hit whenever it’s in town, it is especially popular during NFR, which is why Reba and Brooks & Dunn recently announced that they’ve extended their December run so more fans could see the show. The production now runs November 29 as well as December 1, 2, 5 and 8 through 10 at 7:30 p.m.
performing his No. 1 hits, Allan will likely sing his newest single, “Mess Me Up,” which was released earlier this year.

A RODEO FAVORITE GILLEY’S SALOON, DANCE HALL & BBQ LASSOS IN THE NFR CROWD By H. Wadowski

here may be several country and western bars in Las Vegas, but there’s only one Gilley’s Saloon, Dance Hall & BBQ.
Home to the world-famous Gilley Girls—sexy servers donning bikinis, chaps, cowgirl boots and cowboy hats—Gilley’s Saloon, Dance Hall & BBQ at Treasure Island is one of the Strip’s most popular places for country fans to hang out, especially during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), when it hosts live entertainment throughout the 10-day event. In addition to hosting a free NFR bull riders autograph session on December 13 from noon to 2 p.m., rodeo fans can put the dance hall’s 1,000-square-foot dance floor to use every night starting at 10 p.m. when various country rock bands perform on Gilley’s stage. There’s no cover charge in the dance hall/saloon before 9 p.m. After 9 p.m. there is a $10 cover charge.
Sunday at 11 p.m. and compete for a $200 cash prize. For those who might need a little liquid encouragement beforehand, Gilley’s will be featuring an assortment of drink specials throughout the rodeo. When it’s time to feed that cowboy-sized appetite, Gilley’s offers an extensive menu of barbecue fare and Southern specialties for lunch and dinner. Guests can dine inside of the Stripfront restaurant and watch passersby through the floor-to-ceiling windows, as they feast upon such delicious dishes as the tender apple-juice-braised Brisket “Filet” or the lip-smackin’ Baby Back Ribs. Be sure to start off your meal with a Giant Bavarian Pretzel to share with the table, and don’t forget a side of the tasty White Cheddar and Green Chili Grits to enjoy with your entrée.
NFR fans can test their strength and stamina on Gilley’s mechanical bull

Visitors can also see how their strength and stamina compares to their favorite NFR bull rider by going for a ride on Gilley’s mechanical bull. RIDIN’ FOR THE FANS AFFORDABLE, ACTION-PACKED RODEO FUN AT THE CINCH BOYD GAMING CHUTE-OUT By Heather Turk
G
iven that Boyd Gaming’s co-founder, Sam Boyd, helped bring the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) to Las Vegas in 1985, it’s no surprise that Boyd Gaming has been a proud sponsor of the event ever since. In fact, Boyd Gaming’s Las Vegas properties have become some of the most popular places for rodeo fans to go after watching all of the NFR action at Thomas & Mack Center, thanks to such annual events as the Legendary Buck’N Ball and the “National Finals Tonight Show.” In 2015, Boyd Gaming added another can’tmiss rodeo event to its entertainment lineup: the CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute-Out. Returning to the Orleans Arena for its third year December 7 through 9, this action-packed event welcomes past, present and future stars of rodeo as they compete on 60,000 cubic feet of dirt in various events for their share of a $200,000 purse. Previous CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute-Outs have seen world champion riders and ropers such as Cody Ohl, Fred Whitfield, J.W. Harris, Cody Wright, Luke Branquinho and Wade Sundell competing in the days’ events.
to expect from each day’s contests. Last year, ticket holders saw history in the making when saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell made the firstever “contestant challenge,” disagreeing with a call made by a rodeo judge for his ride. The judge watched a replay of Sundell’s ride, and upon review, actually reversed the decision! In addition to watching some of the biggest rodeo names compete in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and tie-down roping, fans will have the opportunity to interact with the competitors as well as the rodeo itself in a variety of ways. Guests can download the free Boyd Gaming Chute-Out app, which was introduced during the event’s inaugural year, to receive live scoring results, contestant bios, exclusive videos, information on events and instant access to the latest Chute-Out news. The CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute-Out will once again be the only rodeo event listed in Boyd Gaming’s sportsbooks during rodeo week, so adult fans can wager on their favorite riders. The 2017 CINCH Boyd Gaming Chute-Out begins each day at 2 p.m. Tickets start at just $30. For more information, visit boydchuteout.com.

REBAR’S REMIX CHANGING THE FORMULA OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD BAR By Connor McIIveen
C
reated by Las Vegas Arts District Board President Derek Stonebarger, with the help of a successful Indiegogo campaign that reached 123 percent of its goal, ReBAR is a bar built by the people and for the people. Cheap beer, Charitable Cocktails, affordable antiques and eats that give back, it’s a place where those who love Vegas can enjoy themselves while giving a little something to the community. Located at 1225 S. Main St., ReBAR surpasses expectations. They have an impressive selection of beer with a rotating mystery tap,

and always include frothy beverages from local breweries on draft, in a bottle or canned. There’s wine on tap, too, with a variety to choose from, including, but not limited to, their own house wines priced under $6 a glass. The Charitable Cocktails, however, are the pride of the drink menu. A portion of each cocktail purchased, like the Absolut AfterSchool Mule or the Opportunity Gin & Tonic, goes to help the specific charity for which the drink is named. The mule benefits After-School All-Stars; the G&T helps support Opportunity Village. Bar patrons can sip back cool crafts and rest easy knowing their cash is going to a good cause. As far as food options, the bar has one signature craft: hot dogs! Sausage selections include All Beef dogs, Polish Sausage, Brat Links and even Vegan Kielbasa, and each dog is served on a Great Buns Pretzel Roll with a host of free condiments. While the dogs are delicious, the best part of the meal is knowing that ReBAR donates a portion of its hot dog purchases to Three Square Food Bank. Each hot dog purchased equals one meal for a hungry Nevadan, with over 10,000 purchased since their opening. First time visitors may be so dazzled by the humanitarian menu they might not notice that the art on the walls, the glass they are drinking from and even the chair they’re sitting in are all for sale. In addition to being an outstanding local bar, ReBAR is also an antique store. If you find the chair you’re sitting in particularly comfortable, or think the large deer head on the wall would go well in your study, you can purchase it at the bar, and walk out knowing you helped the community by simply going to ReBAR and having a good time.

o matter what the temperature is outside, it’s a bracing 23 degrees Fahrenheit inside Polar Play, Arizona’s first ice bar, where guests don parkas and gloves before heading into a room filled with 30,000 pounds of sculpted ice. Bring the kids from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily to slurp Kool-Aidbased slushies named for 90s cartoon and TV characters, or come with friends on Friday or Saturday night from 7 to 10 p.m. for an adultsonly experience.
maximum capacity. Then, they’ll ask people to leave based on the color of the wristband they received when they entered. Padillo suggested coming on a weekday afternoon for a less busy time.
HEADING TO THE ARCTIC
“We want it to be fun,” Padillo explained.
You’ll feel like you’ve traveled thousands of miles the minute you enter Polar Play, even though the lodge area is comfortably toasty. Parkas and faux fur (a $5 upgrade) line the wall, and a gas fireplace offers relief to those needing a break from the arctic temperatures in the actual ice bar area. As you enter the bar, prepare to be caught in the crossfire of a cotton “snowball” fight. If you’re thirsty, step up to the ice bar for alcohol-infused “sloshies,” cocktails, wine and local beers. Then, play chess, shuffleboard and cornhole with game boards and pieces carved entirely of ice. Or, pose for selfies with ice carvings of polar bears and penguins.
SWITCHING IT UP
Polar Play is constantly evolving. Expect to see holiday-themed ice sculptures, like Santa, and holiday-related activities as the holidays approach.
One thing that won’t change is the temperature. Padillo advised against showing up in shorts or flip-flops even during the summer. But if you do, Polar Play has socks for purchase and a warm fire in the lodge to take the chill off. For more information on chillin’ at Polar Play, go to polarplay.com.
WARMING BACK UP

SIP AND SAVOR THREE PHOENIX MIXOLOGISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW By Teresa Bitler
P
hoenix boasts an impressive line-up of nationally acclaimed mixologists. Phil Clark of Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails, Libby Lingua of UnderTow and Timothy Lafever, Jr., from Bitter & Twisted are poised to join their ranks.
PHIL CLARK (BLUE HOUND KITCHEN & COCKTAILS)
His tiki-inspired Junglebird cocktail is one of them. A mix of lime and pineapple offset by brown sugar and rum, it’s become the most popular drink on the menu. You can find Clark mixing the Junglebird and other drinks on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. “Look for the guy in the apron!” bluehoundkitchen.com
Lafever credits his success in creating tasty libations to reading cookbooks and traveling. Reading the cookbooks helps him better understand flavor pairings; traveling the world exposes him to new flavors he can later incorporate into his cocktails. “I look at cocktail development as being a liquid chef,” he said. Currently, he has two cocktails on the menu: the tiki-inspired Ship Load of Rum and the Rum DMC. Both feature fresh fruits and ingredients, which makes a big difference. “Have you ever seen someone try a drink with fresh ingredients? It’s a flavor bomb, and you can see the reaction on their face,” Lafever said. You can order a drink from Lafever most nights, Tuesday through Saturday. bitterandtwistedaz.com
LIBBY LINGUA (UNDERTOW)
Lingua enjoys shaking things up a bit, literally and figuratively. Her cocktail recipes often feature a unique split base, such as gin and mescal, or contain over-proof spirits, something many shy away from because of the higher alcohol content. Think you don’t like a particular spirit? She’s ready to accept that challenge. “I really like broadening someone’s horizons,” she explained. “If you say you don’t like bourbon, I want to serve you a cocktail with bourbon that will change your mind.” Lingua, who has a background in fashion, also takes great pride in creating drinks that look as amazing as they taste. Watch her in action Wednesday through Saturday at UnderTow. undertowphx.com 74

A recent transplant from Washington D.C., Clark likes to “sharpen” traditional cocktail recipes by adding unexpected and seasonal flavors to the shaker. The result is a menu of “adventurous” cocktails with twists like spice-infused spirits and flavored ice cubes. “We’re willing to push the envelope at Blue Hound,” he said. “You’ll find cocktails here you won’t find anywhere else.”

outhern California may be home to The Happiest Place on Earth, but there’s plenty of Disney magic in Northern California, too, thanks to The Walt Disney Family Museum. Co-founded by Walt’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller, in October 2009, the 40,000-squarefoot museum tells the story of Walt Disney in his own words, as well as in the words of others who worked with him and knew him well. Ten galleries featuring rare photos, original drawings, telegrams and more detail Walt’s life from his birth on December 5, 1901, until his death on December 15, 1966, taking fans on a sentimental journey that highlights his many successes as well as a few of his disappointments. As guests walk through the museum, they’ll encounter several interactive exhibits where

The museum also houses an impressive model of Disneyland, highlighting the attractions that Walt influenced over the years. See 26 of his Academy Awards and the unique Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Academy Award, which includes a full-size Oscar and seven miniature castings to represent the seven dwarfs. Guests can hear speakers talk throughout the day about various things from Mary Poppins to Disneyland and watch a movie in the 114-seat screening facility. In addition to the permanent galleries on Walt’s life, the museum occasionally hosts special exhibitions for a limited time, like “Awaking Beauty: The Art of Eyvind Earle.” On display through January 8, 2018, this exhibition is housed in the neighboring Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall and showcases both the Sleeping Beauty lead stylist’s work with Disney as well as his many sculptures and landscape paintings. The museum will also welcome “Home for the Holidays at Carolwood” in November, an immersive seasonal installation that celebrates Walt’s family and love of trains. We have a few frequent travelers and seeing them regularly always puts a smile on my face. In addition, I love the flexibility and the opportunities I have to travel. Finding a company that provided a great work-life balance was important to me. Allegiant: What motivated you to visit all of the national parks in the United States? Howie: After graduating school, I knew that being a flight attendant would be perfect for me at this point in my life. I have always loved traveling so getting away during my time off was an added bonus. After visiting a couple of beautiful parks, I knew I had to make it my mission to see the rest of them throughout the country, especially while I have the chance. So far I’ve been to 36 parks—only 22 left! Allegiant: That’s a lot of traveling! How do you keep track of where you have been? Howie: I have a map and I put a pin on all of the locations that I’ve been to. So far, because of Allegiant, I’ve been able to visit 12 countries!
As for all of the parks I have been to, I have a book and get a stamp from each one while I am there. It’s sort of like a passport—just for national parks. Allegiant: Do you have a favorite park or place to visit? Howie: I love Southern Utah. They have a few great parks and amazing scenery. It’s much different than the east coast. I also really enjoyed visiting the state of Washington. I’ve found great hiking trails near Bellingham and Seattle. As far as places in general, I loved my time in Cambodia. The people are friendly, the food is amazing and the overall culture is really humbling. Allegiant: I imagine you’ve done some traveling in your own city. Do you have a great “locals” tip you can share about Pittsburgh? Howie: Definitely! I love the Pittsburgh area. First and foremost, check out The Incline. If you have time, you can kayak on the river under the Roberto Clemente Bridge for an incredible city view. Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh is a must-visit. When you’re hungry, check out Thai Cottage in Regent Square or Gaucho Parrilla Argentina. Enjoy yourself here, there’s a lot to see and do!

MAKE-A-WISH ®
A wall of wish stories inside The Wishing Place
ALLEGIANT CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS MAKING WISHES COME TRUE By Christopher Lewis
A
trip on a plane to visit the Orlando theme parks would be a memorable experience for any child. But for a little boy on a clear sunny day in August of 2012, this particular trip from Allentown, Pennsylvania would mark a very special occasion for him and his family as well as Allegiant. On that day, Jamie became Allegiant’s first Wish Kid. It was the first time Allegiant partnered with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation to help fulfill the organization’s mission of granting wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions.

These wishes can range from meeting someone famous to building a special play area in their backyard to visiting their favorite theme parks in Orlando. Nearly 75 percent of wishes require air travel, and Allegiant is proud to play a role in helping them come true. But the real power of granting wishes goes far beyond the wish itself. These wishes provide hope and relief during a challenging time in the lives of not only the child, but also their family.
Make-A-Wish livery on one of its aircraft and donated office space to be the new home of the organization’s Southern Nevada chapter. Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada’s 7,000-square-foot headquarters, named The Wishing Place, is located on Allegiant’s campus. But to Caroline Ciocca, the chapter’s president and CEO, the building symbolizes much more than that. “Now that we have The Wishing Place, we can tell the story of granting wishes and how important and life-changing that is not only for the child, but for the family and volunteers who are involved - that’s priceless,” Caroline said. “We come in and tell them to dream about anything they want, and it really gives the emotional medicine they need.” Allegiant also donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. To find out how you can help make wishes come true, visit wish.org.
“Our partnership with Make-A-Wish® over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Our crews love interacting with wish families and work hard to make every wish flight an unforgettable experience,” said Hilarie Grey, Allegiant’s Director of Corporate Communications. “From our very first wish kid, Jamie, to the more than 850 kids we’ve flown since, it’s an honor make these trips of a lifetime possible.” In addition to providing wish flights, Allegiant has contributed approximately $1 million annually to the foundation, unveiled a special

Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN
MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.
