But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise — transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic… pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril. Blue Sky Studios’ “Spies in Disguise,” an animated spy comedy adventure, stars Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Reba McEntire, Rachel Brosnahan, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled and Masi Oka and is directed by Troy Quane and Nick Bruno.

S p i e s I n D i s g u i s e Co - D i r ec to r s Turn the Spy Genre On Its Head By Christopher Lewis
Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane partner up to direct the latest feature from Disney and Blue Sky Studios, "Spies in Disguise." The film features an all-star cast as super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) team up to save the world. Sunseeker sat with both directors to discuss the upcoming film. What was the inspiration for this movie? How did this all start? Nick Bruno (NB): This is an opportunity to give kids what will probably be their very first spy movie, and where, in a world where violence and action is king, we thought this is an awesome opportunity to show kids that there’s another way to approach dealing with people. When it started, Troy was out in California, and I was in New York, working on "The Peanuts movie." We had both read the script. We’d never met

each other, we’d never worked together. But I think we both had the same reaction to the script — where, when we read it, we said, "This might be one of the dumbest ideas ever." Troy Quane (TQ): "We have to do it. We have to do it." NB: Because it’s so unique, it’s silly, but within that movie, we felt that there was a good message. What does this movie mean to you? NB: We feel a tremendous responsibility with delivering what might be a kid’s first spy movie. And, it’s been so passionate for us to not just have fun with all the things that come with making a spy movie, but at the same time, delivering a message that you think can possibly make the world a better place.
TQ: I think epic, I think exciting, I think global. But then, I also say heartfelt and endearing and hopefully aspirational. And, I think that juxtaposition is what we were always after, that you have this really intimate, heartfelt story inside this gigantic big action set piece. And, hopefully that comes through. And we’ll never look at pigeons the same way again right? NB: Yeah. You know, one of the things that you learn and discover is just how amazing pigeons really are. They’re in every city around the world. Nobody even knows that they’re there. So they’re hiding in plain sight. Pigeons can see in 360 degrees, which means that at any given time, they could see your face and their butt. You can’t sneak up on them. TQ: Right. They’re one of the fastest birds in the world — only the peregrine falcon is faster. But because they’re so fast, they see at a faster rate of speed than we do, so everything to them feels slow motion, so we would always refer to it as Pigeon Bullet Time.
seen, but when you think of it, you’re like, “Man, that’s actually genius.” So, it was a turning point. NB: That’s also where we came up with the “Let’s get weird.” Because it’s not just a mantra in the movie. It’s a mantra for making the movie. At first, it seems a little weird, but there’s some real good grounding behind it all. So let’s get weird! "Spies in Disguise" opens nationwide Dec. 25.
Lance as the brave, fierce, magestic... pigeon

NB: Mm hmm. TQ: They see UV light. So, they see bands of light that we can’t see with the human eye… When we first read the script, it was just a joke. We turn the world’s greatest spy into a pigeon. And we started going, "This is the genius that is Walter." At the surface, it seems like a joke, but really what he’s saying is, this is the best cover for a spy. No one knows you’re there. You’ve got all these built-in gadgets. It’s actually genius, right? And that became really the approach for all of Walter’s other gadgets. At first glance, they seem like the dumbest thing you’d ever

While beachside dining at fancy resorts may sound like a true Floridian vacation, locals know that the Punta Gorda and Fort Myers area is food truck territory. Even those passing through have the opportunity to sample the city fare, as the Punta Gorda Airport hosts food trucks every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. It’s worth the time tracking down where they will show up on any given day. CESAR’S TACOS One of the longest standing and most popular in Port Charlotte, Cesar’s Tacos usually parks at the Lucky Marathon gas station on a regular weekly rotation. Besides its 10 varieties of tacos at $2 a pop ($3 for shrimp or fish), it also sells quesadillas, burritos, occasional specials and Mexican soda in tropical fruit flavors. Tacos taste authentically south of the border, with options from pastor (marinated pork) to tripe. facebook.com/cesarstacoss

Not all Bloody Marys are created equal — at least not in Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, where several local restaurants are known for their flavorful takes on the beloved cocktail. FARLOW’S ON THE WATER The food isn’t the only thing with a tropical influence at this popular Englewood restaurant. Its Jamaican Jerk Bloody Mary pairs perfectly with several of its Caribbean dishes made with a Southern twist — particularly the Kentucky Fried Green Tomatoes. A unique blend of Absolut Lime and Peppar vodkas combined with an organic Bloody Mary mix, the drink comes served in a hurricane glass rimmed with the restaurant’s Jamaican Jerk seasoning

Visitors can order either a Standard Bloody Mary for $6 or a Deluxe Bloody Mary topped with a strip of bacon, two jumbo shrimp and a snow crab claw for $11 and add a variety of mixers and garnishes to their 16-ounce drink. For an extra $2, they can even upgrade the vodka from well vodka. Guests can then sip their creation on the restaurant’s 200-seat patio, which not only boasts breathtaking views of Charlotte Harbor, but also features musicians playing everything from country to trop-rock music from 1-5 p.m. hurricanecharleys.com VILLAGE BREWHOUSE Although best known for having 20 beers on tap, this waterfront restaurant in Fishermen’s Village makes one of the tastiest Bloody Marys in Punta Gorda. The Brewhouse Bloody Mary is made with Pinnacle Vodka and the restaurant’s own Bloody Mary mix, which has some hot sauce in it to give the drink a little kick of spice. Typically priced at $6, the cocktail is available all day every Sunday for only $5. Sundays are actually a great time to visit the sports bar, as not only does it have the NFL Sunday Ticket so football fans can watch the latest games on one of 34 big screen TVs, but guests sitting on its 150-seat patio can also hear live music coming from Fishermen’s Village’s Center Court. thevillagebrewhouse.com

Allegiant passengers traveling to Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach will quickly discover that no trip to the area is complete without visiting Fishermen’s Village. Located on Charlotte Harbor, Fishermen’s Village stands on the site of the former Maud Street City Dock, which at one time had as many as seven different companies operating packing houses that were integral to the area’s fishing industry. Since 1980, however, the land has been repurposed as one of Punta Gorda’s premier shopping and dining destinations. Home to 30 independently owned shops and boutiques, the open-air promenade is the perfect place to purchase a variety of unique gifts and quality fashion pieces to bring back home. Shoppers will find everything from handmade art by local artists at Dragonfly to eye-catching costume jewelry at DanaTyler. When it’s time for a shopping break, idyllic views with a side of delicious food are offered at five waterfront restaurants, including Fishermen’s Village’s newest addition, The Pier. The contemporary restaurant offers a menu of inspired cuisine that marries Florida fare with the traditional flavors and cooking techniques of Hawaii, the Pacific Islands and the Pacific Rim. Delicious hearty selections like kalua pulled pork are balanced out by fresh and light options like lettuce wraps or sushi. For those who want to get out on the water, Fishermen’s Village has its own marina that offers everything from kayak rentals to sightseeing cruises. During the month of December, guests can even book a one-hour tour of Punta Gorda’s residential canals to view the holiday lights with King Fisher Fleet’s Christmas Light Canal Cruise. Tours leave nightly at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m.
Visitors can check out more than 1 million festive lights and decorations at Fishermen’s Village, too, during its annual Festival of Lights celebration through Dec. 31. The event is one of many special events Fishermen’s Village hosts throughout the year including fireworks during Fishermen’s Village’s New Year’s Eve Celebration on Dec. 31 and free music in its Center Court on select days of the week. With so much to see and do, visitors may have a hard time leaving Fishermen’s Village. Soon, however, they won’t have to, as Fishermen’s Village Resort will be reopening after being closed since Hurricane Irma in 2017. The resort’s newly remodeled villas will include spacious kitchen, living and dining areas, making Fishermen’s Village Punta Gorda’s ultimate place to stay and play! fishville.com

While its beaches aren’t to be missed, no trip to the Gulf Coast is complete without visiting historic downtown Sarasota. “Sarasota’s best restaurants are all within an eight-block radius,” said John Moran, operations manager for the Downtown Improvement District, which has been working since 2008 to make downtown Sarasota an even more popular destination than it already is by improving its streets and landscape. “It’s a foodie’s paradise with plenty of alfresco dining. Shopping, art galleries, world-famous opera, live theater — everything is here.” Sarasota even boasts nearly 90 relics on the National Register of Historic Places. Locals are still living in these beautiful buildings built in the early 1900s, not to mention partying the night away at The Gator Club since 1912. Just like Sarasota, Sarasota Architectural Salvage is a curious mélange of the old and new. The 10,000-square-foot treasure trove sells everything from reclaimed lumber and barnwood to vintage collectibles. Shoppers never know what they’ll find, from glass film negatives dating back to the late 1800s to modern items made from reclaimed materials. There is no better time to visit Clearwater Beach than stone crab season. From now until May 15, guests can indulge in fresh Florida stone crab at several local restaurants while supplies last. Since Mother Nature is in charge of how many stone crab claws can be harvested each season, guests are encouraged to reach out to participating restaurants to make sure the seasonal favorite is available before visiting. COOTERS Known for its locally sourced stone crab that’s delivered fresh daily when available, this family-friendly restaurant and bar is one of the city’s most popular places to relish never frozen Florida stone crab claws by the pound. Various sizes are usually offered, and prices fluctuate based on the market price. The claws can be ordered hot with drawn butter or cold with Cooters’ special homemade sauce, and they come served semi-cracked with mallets and crab forks. For serious crab lovers, guests can also dig in to Cooters’ Crab Feast Platter, which comes loaded with enough varieties of crab — including stone crab — to satisfy two to four people. cooters.com FRENCHY’S This family of local seafood restaurants receives all of its stone crab from its own processing plant in Palm Harbor. Catches are cooked the same day they are harvested, then delivered fresh, never frozen, to Frenchy’s five restaurants, as well as its three Clear Sky branded restaurants. Medium, large and jumbo-sized claws are typically available, with prices varying by the pound based on availability and demand. Guests can enjoy the stone crab claws either chilled with a stone crab mustard sauce on the side or steamed with drawn butter based on their preference. The claws are then served chilled by the pound, with medium and large crab claws typically available. In the past, four large crab claws or six medium crab claws were equal to a pound. Price is driven by supply, and claws come served with the restaurant’s signature stone crab mustard sauce. palmpavilion.com

CIRCLE OF HEROES MEMORIAL A N E W A N D E XC I T I N G D I V E S I T E H A S O P E N E D O F F C L E A R WAT E R B E AC H By Nancy Foster
A unique diving experience, located 10 miles off the shores of Clearwater Beach, can be credited to the vision of Dr. Heyward Mathews, a renowned professor of oceanography and scuba diving instructor. Dr. Mathews envisaged an underwater memorial to honor those who served, and with the assistance of his nephew, former Florida U. S. Representative David Jolly years of fundraising and dedicated volunteers, the Circle of Heroes Memorial at Veteran’s Reef opened on August 15, 2019. The first phase of the project consists of 12, 6 foot concrete statues erected in a 100 foot circle around a pentagon-shaped monument emblazoned on each side with bronze emblems of the U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force. The statues, each requiring two to three months to design and fabricate, depict
military men and women in the branches they served. They were barged in from Sand Key on the south side of Clearwater Beach, lowered into 40 foot waters and anchored by 2000-pound bases. Circle of Heroes Memorial is also being used as a therapeutic dive site for veterans with physical and mental injuries. In addition to the memorial itself, which is due to double to 24 statues by the end of 2020, many divers find the reef a photographic wonder. It is already attracting marine life such as grouper, sharks, flounder, amberjack and cobia. Visitors who wish to dive the site can sign on through area dive shops or through local dive charter companies. Proof of certification as an Open Water or Scuba Diver is required, but for unlicensed enthusiasts, some companies offer a 3-day course to become certified.

on Friday and Saturday nights. Although the lineup varies, frequent performers include Colt Clark on Monday evenings, who performs everything from blues to rock music, and local favorite Jariah Higgins on alternating Wednesday afternoons playing contemporary hits and classics. It was purchased by the city in 1974 and eventually converted in 2015 from an 18-hole, par-3 course with a driving range to a 9-hole, par-3 course with a 3-hole practice course, three large practice greens and a driving range with 18 covered hitting stalls. As part of the renovation, all of the holes were changed from their original routing, and all-new greens and tees were installed. Water comes into play on six holes, and several of the fairways boast beautiful trees. Celebrating 105 years on Jan. 15, 2020, the family-owned Cuban-American La Segunda Bakery prides itself on upholding the same handmade traditions its founder, Juan Moré, set forth in the early 1900s. This includes placing a freshly cut palmetto leaf across the top of each loaf of Cuban bread to create the signature split down the middle that locks in the moisture. One of only a few bakeries to still uphold this labor-intensive tradition, it’s not surprising that La Segunda Bakery is the world’s largest producer of authentic Cuban bread. While many people come to La Segunda Bakery to enjoy the traditional Cuban bread recipe Moré discovered while fighting in the Spanish-American War in Cuba, that’s not the only item guests can relish. La Segunda Bakery offers an extensive selection of bakery and café favorites, so guests can savor everything from cookies and pastries to sandwiches and salads. Naturally, some of its bestselling dishes incorporate its Cuban bread, like its Cuban Sandwich made with mojo-marinated pork, smoked ham, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, pickles and a special sauce, but there are several other items guests frequent the bakery for, as well. La Segunda Bakery’s pastry bakers go through 25 pounds of guava each day to make its delicious Guava and Guava & Cheese turnovers! Other flavorful items include empanadas, flan and the Cuban Cobb salad made with shredded lettuce, pork, ham, salami, Swiss cheese, honey mustard and house-made croutons. In 2018, La Segunda Bakery expanded its operations by opening a second location in South Tampa. In addition to serving the same handcrafted fare the original location is famous for, the new location offers a barista and — for the first time ever — seating, so guests can enjoy their selections on site. Bud & Alley’s: The place to gather for sunset in Seaside

Rooftop bars give new perspective to the cocktail-hopping scene. Their growing popularity across the nation is nothing new along Florida’s Emerald Coast, where elevated perches result in glorious water views. AJ’S SEAFOOD & OYSTER BAR DESTIN HARBOR This is the original AJ’s location, which now has four locations along the Emerald Coast, all of which generate a lively, salty atmosphere. Its shanty fish-house stance along Destin Harbor rewards customers with views of the famed local fishing fleet coming in with their catches at day’s end, followed by the sun’s dramatic farewell nod. Three stories up, the Top Deck and its tiki bar entertain the party crowd, along with diners and music-lovers. Live entertainers perform seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as everyone relishes fish off the docks, a battery of adult beverages and the sparkle of seaside revelry. ajsdestin.com MCGUIRE’S IRISH PUB OF DESTIN It need not be St. Paddy’s Day to find a “top of the evening” party on McGuire’s Sunset Deck. It, too, looks out over the gleaming
white-sand jetties of Destin Harbor. The staff throws open the glass garage doors when the weather turns warm to catch the sea breezes. The deck hosts live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, when the shenanigans roll on until 2 p.m. Upstairs serves the same award-winning menu of steaks, burgers, seafood and traditional Irish fare as found downstairs. Of course, the beer flows freely, but McGuire’s also has a reputation for its martinis and deadly Irish Wake specialty cocktail. mcguiresirishpub. com/destin BUD & ALLEY’S WATERFRONT RESTAURANTS, SEASIDE Open day-long for dining, drinking or just staring transfixed at gently lapping Gulf waters, the Rooftop Bar at Bud & Alley’s becomes the town’s hot spot at sunset, when the bell rings for the day’s-end toast. Get ready for a selfie with a cucumber lime martini or blood orange margarita (to match the sunset) in hand. Stay for dinner: The crab cakes and grilled gulf fish of the day are signature. budandalleys.com

Asheville is a spectacular mountain destination any time of year, but during the holidays it becomes almost magical with winter landscapes dressed in glistening lights and holiday blooms, smells of gingerbread and hot chocolate, and warm fires to cozy up to.

THE BILTMORE ESTATE During the holidays, America’s largest home sparkles with 30,000 lights and more than 100 hand-decorated Christmas trees across the estate, including the 35-foot Fraser in the Banquet Hall. “Candlelight Christmas Evenings“ gives guests an opportunity to experience Christmas at the estate much the same way the Vanderbilts did on Christmas Eve 1895, when Biltmore welcomed its first guests. The celebration continues across the estate, including colorful holiday blooms in the Conservatory; commemorative Christmas wine and wine tasting at the Winery; special menus in restaurants and Antler Hill Village's must-see evening illumination display. biltmore.com/events/christmas-at-biltmoredaytime-celebration-1 THE 27th NATIONAL GINGERBREAD HOUSE COMPETITION The National Gingerbread House Competition, which takes place at the Omni Grove Park Inn, is a favorite Asheville holiday tradition that has taken place for nearly 30 years. From whimsical to elaborate, there are gingerbread houses of every size, shape, complexity and theme which compete for more than $25,000 in prizes. After checking out the display, guests can grab a giant rocking chair in front of one of the two massive 12-foot log fireplaces in the Great Hall and warm up with hot chocolate or a special holiday cocktail. omnihotels.com/hotels/ D e s t i n at i o n ▪

A trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico is one of many contradictions. It’s a trip to the past, and it’s not. It’s a trip to another world, and it’s not. It’s a lively and energetic city, but it’s also a relaxing one. San Juan is all of those things, and the beauty of visiting this jewel of the Caribbean are all the different experiences one can have.
with its perfect tropical weather. On the resort, you’ll also find a newly renovated pool with full food and drink service. A fitness center and game room, offering an assortment of video games, pool table and ping pong table, are available for guests. And you’ll be welcomed by a gorgeous lobby decorated by the works of local artists, which is updated every few months.
Explore Old Town San Juan and its 16th century walled fortress, and it’s a unique glimpse into our nation’s colonial past. Wander down the streets of its vibrant neighborhoods and experience one of the best restaurant and bar scenes in the region. And stay at one of the two resorts we recommend below to relax or play in paradise by the purest beaches and bluest waters.
La Concha, a Renaissance Resort This Puerto Rico icon of a resort describes itself as the quintessential beachfront playground, epitomizing the “Latino Chic” lifestyle. Located in the heart of the trendy Condado district, it’s centrally located to a sophisticated scene a restaurants, bars and nightclubs. But onsite, you’ll also discover a 24/7 casino, eight restaurants and bars, and Fifty Eight, one of the hottest new nightclubs where you can dance till dawn. You’ll also find a luxurious full-service spa, providing rejuvenating indoor/ outdoor treatments for singles, couples and even groups, as well as a fitness center, which offers morning group exercise classes. There is also a multi-level, infinity-edged outdoor oasis with pools, cabanas and waterfalls. Last but not least, La Concha is right on the ocean, offering access to all types of activities from snorkeling and scuba diving to sea kayaking, surfing and windsurfing.

MEET OUR NEWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANT Five-Year-Old Make-A-Wish Kid, S.J. By Andrew Porrello
For his wish trip to Walt Disney World®, MakeA-Wish® kid Stephen “S.J.” Awwad, 5, had one tiny request: Could he also hand out snacks to his fellow passengers during the flight to Florida? Yes, he could, Allegiant representatives said. When S.J.’s flight departed Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids in October, bound for Orlando, that’s exactly what he did. In a grand send-off, with airport officials and Make-A-Wish Michigan representatives seeing him off, S.J. was named an honorary Allegiant flight attendant. A crew member presented S.J. with a kid-sized uniform, complete with orange tie, yellow shirt and blue sweater vest. He also received his very own customized wings pin with his nickname and the words “flight attendant” etched in the metal.
Photos courtesy of Allegiant
Excitedly following his new team members onto the plane, S.J. first stopped to visit the pilots in the flight deck and learn all about how they fly the plane. Next, it was time to welcome passengers on board. S.J. stood at the boarding door and shook the hand of every passenger, with a big smile and the greeting, “have a nice flight!” About 30 minutes into the flight, at cruising altitude, the captain gave flight attendants clearance to move about the cabin, and it was time for SJ’s dream to come true.
S.J.’s wish was to spend a week with his family at Disney World. Handing out snacks during the flight was a “wish enhancement,” just a little extra something that Allegiant was thrilled to be a part of,” said Hilarie Grey, the airline’s managing director of corporate communications, who oversees Allegiant’s corporate giving initiatives. Since 2012, Allegiant has partnered with MakeA-Wish, helping to fulfill the wishes of more than 1,800 children. We are currently a Wish Champion, recognized for making $1 million in annual contributions and the only domestic carrier to feature an aircraft with a Make-AWish themed livery. “Many of the kids we fly to their wish destinations are traveling to Florida,” Grey said. “but his is the first time a Wish kid has asked to serve snacks to passengers in flight. We found out from MakeA-Wish that S.J. loves anything to do with flying, so we not only wanted to say ‘yes,’ but aimed to make the experience extra special.” A special thank you to Disney for their donation of theme park tickets and other perks for each of the wish families, including SJ and his family, as part of their 39-year relationship with MakeA-Wish.
He met the rest of his flight crew at the front of the plane and began his march down the aisle handing (sometimes tossing) out pretzels to all passengers – many of them stating that he was the best flight attendant they had ever met. “This whole experience has just been a beautiful distraction from our reality, because its distracted us and given us the opportunity to think about fun things, and exciting things instead of appointments,” stated wish mom, Danielle.
