Each year, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show draws more than 2,400 of the world’s finest Arabian and half-Arabian horses for a week of thrilling competition in pursuit of the coveted “Scottsdale Champion” title. These magnificent animals and their owners gather from around the world to compete for over $1,000,000 in prizes in more than 850 colorful classes. The 62nd Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show will take place at the City of Scottsdale’s WestWorld, February 16-26, 2017. The largest event of its kind in the world, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show routinely attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators. In addition to exciting competitions, gala parties, educational seminars and an international cuisine court, the event features more than 300 vendors and trade booths, offering everything from lavish jewelry, clothing and works of art to boots, saddles and gifts. Guests also can stroll the luxurious, exotically decorated stabling areas in which the horses are housed. Although it’s a grand event today, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show had very modest beginnings. It all started in 1953 when horse fancier Ed Tweed stopped by the stable of Pearl Grey Clyde, the first person to bring a purebred Arabian horse to the Valley of the Sun. At that meeting, Tweed proclaimed that he would bring together all Arabian horse owners in Arizona and start an Arabian Horse Association. Two years later, the inaugural Arabian Horse Show was held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. The event was organized by an all-volunteer group and consisted of 50 horses and just over a dozen exhibitors, all from Arizona and neighboring states. In contrast, the 2013 show featured exhibitors from all 50 states and 12 foreign countries. Following the inaugural event, Arabian horse owner Ann McCormick bought 150 acres of land near Bell Road that became Paradise Park, the new site of the Arabian Horse Show. Due to the amazing success of the event, it outgrew Paradise Park in the mid-1980s and moved on to WestWorld of Scottsdale, a newly developed, much larger facility that proved to be the perfect locale for this incredibly popular show. Each year the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show raises thousands of dollars for local charities. Some that have benefited from recent shows include the March of Dimes, Cox Charities, Crisis Nursery and Horseman’s Distress Fund. For more than 50 years, the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona has been a supporter of charitable organizations and will continue to support such endeavors this year. Club members estimate that over the years, more than 100 charities have benefited substantially from the event. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Sonoran

Desert, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is a must see event that is perfect for the whole family. Join us in Scottsdale next February and watch these magnificent horses compete! Tickets to the Scottsdale Show can be purchased through TicketMaster 800.745.3000 or www.ticketmaster.com. For more information on the show and for local Arabian farm listings, visit the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona’s website, www.scottsdaleshow.com. as Vegas’ newest place to stay and play is unlike anything the city has ever seen before.

Situated on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino celebrated its grand opening on Dec. 3, 2016. Featuring a casino that’s heavily focused on popular Asian games like Baccarat and Pai Gow, a spa that offers reflexology treatments and the city’s only indoor/outdoor high-end tea garden with its own tea sommelier, the 203-room property is the city’s first casino resort designed from the ground up to create an authentic Asian cultural and gaming experience. “From our exclusive list of 50 Chinese teas and our authentic Cantonese and Pan-Asian culinary portfolio, to the feng shui design of our rooms and the care that was taken with respect to Chinese culture in laying out the property, there is, indisputably, nothing else like this in Las Vegas,” said Lucky Dragon’s president and CEO, Andrew Fonfa.

The cultural authenticity should make Lucky Dragon feel like home.” The property is quickly becoming Las Vegas’ premier destination for authentic Asian restaurants as well, as it boasts five contemporary Chinese dining concepts created with consulting chef Willy Ng of San Francisco’s Koi Palace and Dragon Beaux. These include Dragon’s Alley, which offers a selection of street fare from China, Taiwan and broader Asia; Phoenix, which boasts a menu of cutting-edge culinary trends found throughout modern China (think deer tendon and Kurobuta pork); and Pearl Ocean, which serves some of the finest dim sum in North America. For more on the boutique resort, visit luckydragonlv.com.

Not to be confused with a themed resort, which Fonfa noted makes him think of “superficial touches that decorate a property,” Lucky Dragon offers guests an authentic Asian experience that Fonfa said “wouldn’t seem an inch out of place if you dropped it smack in the middle of Beijing or Guangzhou.” Not only does the property feature signage written in Chinese first and English second, but also a one-and-aquarter-ton glass dragon sculpture suspended above the casino’s center bar to bring luck and good fortune to the guests below. “I suppose I would hope that the average Las Vegas visitor would look at the entire property as unique,” Fonfa stated. “Likewise, I suppose the goal for our Asian guests should be that

Céline Dion celebrating her 1,000th performance at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace last October

STILL GOING STRONG CÉLINE DION REFLECTS ON AN EMOTIONAL YEAR DURING RECENTLY UPDATED LAS VEGAS SHOW By Heather Turk

T

he Colosseum at Caesars Palace may no longer be the only venue in Las Vegas where audiences can see resident productions by some of music’s biggest stars, but it will always be the place that helped usher in a new era of entertainment thanks to its first resident artist: Céline Dion. After Dion’s show “A New Day…” premiered in 2003, the entertainment scene in Las Vegas changed forever, with several A-list acts launching residencies of their own. While many of those performers also call The Colosseum their home, it will always be regarded as Dion’s theater first and foremost; the singer celebrated her

1,000th performance at The Colosseum with an enthusiastic, sold-out crowd on Oct. 9, 2016. Returning to perform her second hit residency at the venue, “Céline,” select dates Jan. 17Feb. 4, Dion recently updated her show for the momentous milestone. Audiences will be treated to an all-new video before she takes the stage, highlighting memorable moments over the almost 14 years Dion has performed at The Colosseum, including footage from both the opening and closing nights of “A New Day…” and her triumphant return in 2011 with “Céline.” Dion performs a new song during the show as well. “Recovering” was written for the grieving singer by P!nk after Dion’s beloved husband, René Angélil, passed away last year from cancer. Dion addresses the audience during the production more than ever now, letting fans in a little on just who she is and how she’s doing since her husband’s passing. Dion’s off-the-cuff remarks make the show even more special than it already was, and fans will be happy to see the singer enjoying herself again onstage after the difficult year she’s endured.

Photos by Denise Truscello

While there have been some changes to “Céline,” one thing that remains the same is Dion’s incredible vocals. Whether she’s performing her greatest hits, like “Because You Loved Me” and “My Heart Will Go On,” or some classic covers from artists like Queen and Prince, Dion’s voice is truly unmatched. Ticket holders are sure to be in awe of Dion’s powerful performance.

In addition to the return of “Céline” this January and February, The Colosseum will be welcoming back two of its other hit residencies: Elton John’s “The Million Dollar Piano” and “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas.” For more information on the venue’s star-studded winter lineup, visit thecolosseum.com. It’s always been a crowd pleaser and a real showstopper.” Last July, an upgraded teeterboard apparatus was integrated into the classic “Mystère” number. It not only allows the artists the ability to jump eight to ten feet higher and do more flips and turns, but also gives ticket holders a better view of the performers’ incredible athletic feats. “Before, we used to have four or five team members around one guy on the board to assist them,” Smith explained. “Now, the artist is alone on the board with the support on the outskirts so audiences can see the performer more clearly.” In addition to the new teeterboard apparatus, the trampoline and fast track numbers that accompanied the 22-person act will be extracted from the show and replaced with a power track apparatus in January. The new power track will give the artists the ability to fly 10 to 15 feet higher in the air.

ENTERTAINMENT

The reimagined Teeterboard number, which also includes stunning new visuals and choreography, joins a new male/female straps act that was integrated into the show in December. Replacing the previous male straps act, the aerial number actually features the performers soaring over the audience at one point. “We really want to up the ante for audiences,” Smith said. “We want the show to continue to feel fresh and familiar at the same time.” “Mystère” runs Saturday through Wednesday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. inside Treasure Island, dark Jan. 7 through 19 and Feb. 5; there is no early show on Jan. 20 and no late show on Jan. 29. Tickets start at $69, plus applicable fees. For more information, visitcirquedusoleil.com/mystere.

“What you can do on a trampoline has been upgraded since we introduced the trampoline number in 1993,” Smith explained. “We’re going to move the action all the way downstage so the power track is in your face and audiences can really feel the excitement.”

“VEGAS! THE SHOW” features lavish Broadway-style musical numbers

ENTERTAINMENT THAT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY THREE AFFORDABLE QUALITY LAS VEGAS PRODUCTIONS By Heather Turk

W

hile most shows in Las Vegas have tickets priced at less than $100, not every production in town offers the best seats in the house for less than a Benjamin. However, three of the Strip’s finest shows are actually budget friendly, so guests don’t have to break the bank to enjoy some topnotch entertainment.

“THE MAC KING COMEDY MAGIC SHOW” AT HARRAH’S LAS VEGAS

Comedy-magician Mac King might be known to make a $100 bill disappear during his longrunning afternoon show, but his family-friendly production is actually one of the Strip’s best entertainment deals. Ticket holders will see some of the greatest illusions performed on the Strip for only $34.99 plus fees, with VIP seats costing just $10 more. King’s illusions may not be as grand as what some of the other magicians in town are doing, but that doesn’t mean they are any less impressive. Audiences will never be more amazed by a deck of cards, some goldfish and a tent than during this quirky production. caesars.com/harrahs-las-vegas/ shows/mac-king-comedy-magic-show

“VEGAS! THE SHOW” INSIDE MIRACLE MILE SHOPS AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD RESORT & CASINO

Featuring some of the most talented singers and dancers performing on the Strip, this extravagant production recalls the glory days of Las Vegas—from showgirls to the Rat Pack. Audiences travel back in time as the cast pays tribute to the many people that have made Las Vegas great, like Wayne Newton, Siegfried & Roy and even Sonny & Cher. A dazzling spectacle from start to finish complete with gorgeous costumes, timeless music and some of the Strip’s top variety acts, tickets cost just $79.99 plus fees, with VIP seats available for only $20 more. vegastheshow.com

“TOURNAMENT OF KINGS” AT EXCALIBUR

A sure bet for a great time, this medievalthemed dinner show not only lets ticket holders enjoy an action-packed production with jousting knights and pyrotechnics for just $75.36—that’s with all applicable fees—but also a mouthwatering three-course meal that’s guaranteed to be one of the best dinners you’ll have in Las Vegas. Nothing disappoints, from the “Dragon’s Blood” tomato soup (which is, hands down, the best tomato soup on the Strip) to the juicy Cornish game hen. Guests can enjoy their meal while cheering on their respective knight, as each ticket holder is seated

“BAZ – STAR CROSSED LOVE”

Following a limited engagement inside LIGHT Nightclub at Mandalay Bay in 2015, this stunning cabaret show moved into its new home at The Palazzo last July. A high-energy moviemusic mash-up, the production brings to life three of famed film visionary Baz Luhrmann’s most beloved movies (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin

Featuring magnificent costumes and rousing renditions of signature soundtrack numbers—think “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” from The Great Gatsby—by some of the most talented performers in Las Vegas, audiences are sure to be in awe of the production. It’s truly unlike anything else staged on the Strip! palazzo.com/ entertainment/baz.html

“CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK® LIVE!”

Featuring some of the most jaw-dropping illusions audiences will ever see performed live onstage, Criss Angel debuted his most spectacular show to date this past June at Luxor Hotel and Casino. Showcasing the superstar magician at his best, “MINDFREAK® LIVE!” will leave ticket holders scratching their heads wondering just how Angel does each groundbreaking illusion. Whether he’s performing a coin trick in the audience or sawing a woman in two with no cloths or boxes concealing her, Angel continues to make the impossible possible throughout the fast-paced production. By the time he does his showstopping finale (which is undoubtedly one of the coolest illusions performed in Las Vegas), ticket holders will be in complete disbelief—and on their feet cheering for more! luxor.com/en/ entertainment/criss-angel-mindfreak-live.html

The Blue Man Wax Shack

A TRUE KODAK MOMENT THE BLUE MAN WAX SHACK COMICAL PHOTO-OP By Heather Turk

A

nyone who has seen Blue Man Group perform live knows that ticket holders never want the euphoric experience to end. Thanks to an interactive new art installation at Luxor Hotel and Casino, fans in Las Vegas can now get an up-close look inside Blue Man Group’s wildly imaginative world anytime they want. The first art installation of its kind, the Blue Man Wax Shack was unveiled July 2016. Featuring three Blue Man Group wax figures created by Madame Tussauds Las Vegas and modeled after original Blue Men Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton, the Blue Man Wax Shack offers a free comical photo-op that only the bald and blue drummers could create.

Acting as an outpost or private laboratory for the Blue Men, Swartz noted that the installation offers passersby “a glimpse of their activities and interests beyond the stage.” Guests can take their own photograph peeking into the UC Wax Shack and, once they’re happy with it, either have it emailed to them or immediately uploaded to their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account. The idea for the Blue Man Wax Shack came when looking for a place to showcase the Blue Man Group wax figures, previously on display in the lobby of Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, when the show moved back to Luxor in November 2015. 26

ENTERTAINMENT

A scene from Blue Man Group’s hit show at Luxor Hotel and Casino

“We needed to create something that was high visibility but would also keep the wax figures safe, so we developed an enclosure which met those needs while also offering a humorous look at the Blue Man character and providing interactivity,” Swartz said. The Wax Shack’s location, near the moving walkways connecting Luxor to Excalibur Hotel and Casino, also helps bring a strong Blue Man Group presence to a satellite location, sparking additional interest in the show. Performances run nightly, dark Jan. 4 and Feb. 5. Allegiant passengers receive special deals when they purchase their tickets onboard. Ask your flight attendant for details.

“The shack’s pulsing iridescent glow and midcentury modern architecture stand out among the Egyptian stylings of Luxor,” said Bill Swartz, creative director of technology and effects for Blue Man Group. “It’s mysterious enough to spark the interest of any visitor. Once you’ve been engaged, you’ll find an interior world of objects, instruments and experiments in active disarray. The Blue Men are in the middle of a photo shoot and the only missing piece is your participation.”

here’s nothing better than seeing your favorite act performing live in the Entertainment Capital of the World— unless, of course, you get to meet them before or after the show. Many of Las Vegas’ top headliners hold meet and greets with fans, giving ticket holders the chance to briefly rub shoulders with their favorite performers. While each experience is unforgettable, these three meet and greet opportunities are some of Las Vegas’ best.

BOYZ II MEN AT THE MIRAGE

For a truly magical experience, Penn & Teller host free meet and greets as ticket holders exit the theater every night after their show. A tradition for more than 40 years, Penn & Teller will sign merchandise and pose for photographs with fans (Teller on the left-hand side of the theater, Penn Jillette on the right-hand side just before you exit) until the last person has vacated the lobby. Guests can also snap a photo with Penn & Teller’s music director, Mike Jones, who plays the piano each night during the show. riolasvegas.com

here’s more to the Las Vegas entertainment scene than just shows and nightclubs. The city is home to plenty of awesome attractions, like these new experiences guests will want to enjoy time and time again.

CHOCOLATE TASTINGS ONBOARD THE HIGH ROLLER

One of Las Vegas’ sweetest experiences, the High Roller’s in-cabin chocolate tastings with Ethel M Chocolates lets guests sample five types of chocolate after learning from a chocolatier ambassador onboard about the origin of the popular candy. GONDOLA UNIVERSITY

In Venice it can take years to become a gondolier, but in Las Vegas all you need is 90 minutes thanks to The Venetian’s Gondola University. Sessions are available daily between 8 and 10 a.m. and give participants the chance to row an authentic Venetian gondola. Before boarding the vessel, guests watch a short video on the history of gondoliers and are taken to the underground facility where the gondolas are maintained. Then, one of The Venetian’s experienced gondoliers teaches each visitor how to pilot a gondola under their watchful eye. The experience concludes with an official Sash and Scarf Ceremony, modeled after the ritual used by the resort when new gondoliers complete their training, where each participant receives a souvenir diploma and photograph. Guests also receive a keepsake gondola hat and T-shirt to wear while onboard the vessel. venetian.com

MARVEL AVENGERS S.T.A.T.I.O.N.

A must for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this immersive attraction at Treasure Island takes guests inside the Avengers Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network (S.T.A.T.I.O.N.) as they train to become an agent. Visitors learn about The Avengers as they walk through the exhibit, watching slideshows on an interactive app and reading classified files. Guests also see authentic costumes and props from the films and compare their skillsets to certain members of The Avengers. The experience culminates with recruits teaming up to defeat the villainous Ultron, who has infiltrated the building. stationattraction.com ENTERTAINMENT

owntown Las Vegas is known for being budget friendly, whether it’s the affordable hotel rooms or the free entertainment on Fremont Street Experience, so it should come as no surprise that the area is home to several great happy hours. Whether you’re looking for a casual or refined happy hour experience, guests never have to go far to find something that will please their palates and pocketbooks.

HASH HOUSE A GO GO

Famous for its oversized portions of farm-fresh food, this relaxed eatery recently extended happy hour at four of its five Las Vegas locations, including inside the Plaza Hotel & Casino. Available daily from 3 to 6 p.m., guests can enjoy $3 glasses of house Chardonnay and Cabernet, well cocktails and bottles of Miller Lite, Coors Light and Bud Light as well as five dishes for only $5 each. Scrumptious selections include the Crock of Bacon Mac ’n Cheese, the Bucket o’ Chicken (lightly breaded chicken served with BBQ sauce) and the Bacon, Bacon, Bacon—crisp bacon caramelized with brown sugar, Hash House seasoning and black pepper. Although the caramelized bacon is gooey, it sure is delicious! hashhouseagogo.com

OSCAR’S BEEF · BOOZE · BROADS

This elegant steakhouse inside the Plaza Hotel & Casino offers a happy hour in its lounge daily from 4 to 7 p.m. (until close on Wednesdays) featuring select appetizers at half price as well as half off all beers, glasses of house wine and well drinks. Guests can feast upon such impeccable items as Johnny Quinn’s Crab Cake made with fresh lump crabmeat, stone ground mustard and pepper rémoulade and the roasted chicken, vegetable and parmigiana cheese Mob Meatballs. Portions are easily sharable, particularly the Steak Carpaccio a la Meyer, which might just be the most flavorful filet carpaccio in town. oscarslv.com

TRIPLE GEORGE GRILL

A staple of downtown Las Vegas, this sophisticated steak and seafood restaurant on 3rd Street is home to one of the city’s best happy hours. Available at the bar Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., guests can relish a selection of dishes for just $4 or $5 as well as select alcoholic drinks for $3 to $6 and half price specialty martinis. Mouthwatering must-tries include the Fish Sliders made with beer-battered cod, the Baked Goat Cheese and the Chicken Satays with a Thai peanut sauce drizzle. The Loaded Potato Skins, topped with sour cream, chives, melted cheese and bacon, are especially tasty as well. triplegeorgegrill.com

as Vegas’ longest continuously running hotel and casino celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2016. Located alongside the revitalized Fremont East District in downtown Las Vegas, El Cortez Hotel & Casino is still one of the city’s finest resorts today. Boasting 361 well-appointed rooms, from the spacious Tower guestrooms with cool vintage furnishings, to the chic lime-colored Cabana Suites, as well as a casino with more than 200 classic coin-operated slot machines, this familyrun property offers guests an old-school Las Vegas experience with a modern touch. From the friendly staff members, many of whom have been working at the property for years, to the piano player in the hotel lobby, El Cortez makes sure each guest’s stay is truly memorable for all the right reasons. The property is also home to two of downtown Las Vegas’ best restaurants: Siegel’s 1941 and Pizza Lotto. Named after mobster Bugsy Siegel, Siegel’s 1941 is open 24 hours a day and features an extensive menu that serves both tasty café staples—including a bevy of burgers and a savory selection of sandwiches from around the country—as well as fine steakhouse fare. Notable items include the mouthwatering Miami Cuban sandwich, the flavorsome Poutine and the succulent 16-ounce King Cut Roast Prime Rib of Beef Au Jus. Pizza Lotto cooks up a selection of palatepleasing New York-style pies, like the perfectly prepared Margherita made with San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil, in addition to several delicious Italian dishes. Open for lunch and dinner, guests can start their meal with the amazing hand-rolled garlic rolls made with fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil, “grandma’s secret herbs” and freshly grated Pecorino Romano and parmigiana reggiano before finishing with an extra-long cannoli for dessert.

For those looking for a little relief after a long day of taking in the sights, El Cortez recently welcomed one of the city’s most rejuvenating— and affordable—retreats: Happy Feet. Open late into the night, guests can enjoy a thorough massage in a serene environment for a fraction of the price they would pay on the Strip, with a 60-minute full-body combo massage costing only $48! If you prefer a nightcap to a massage, guests can also kick back in The Parlour Bar with their favorite libation while enjoying live music on select nights. CELEBRATING THE ART OF THE CRAFT DISCOVER AGRITOPIA, ARIZONA’S FIRST CRAFTSMAN COMMUNITY By Kate Wallace

S

ince opening more than a decade ago as a tailored community celebrating slow living, Agritopia has earned praise and national attention for effectively bridging inescapable urban sprawl with the rural charms of the Gilbert, Ariz. countryside. The community is popular with visitors stopping in for comfort food cooked to order at Joe’s Farm Grill, a 1960s era midcentury modern diner surrounded by century-old trees, and lounging on the shaded patios at The Coffee Shop, housed inside a former tractor storage building. Now, visionary developer Joe Johnston has continued his personal journey of preservation by repurposing Agritopia’s iconic 1950s Quonset hut, a massive barn that was used for storing equipment and hay, into a new craftsman community called Barnone. The exterior of Barnone is crafted from aluminum siding preserved from World War II aircraft that served the former Williams Air Force base, now Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Inside, however, the former hut-turned-makerspace has been refashioned to house a micro-brewery, plantbased eatery, flower shop, beauty salon, printing press and the hearth-based restaurant, Fire & Brimstone, which embraces rustic cooking methods with wood-fired cuisine and locallygrown ingredients from Agritopia’s on-site organic farm.

“Here, the focus is on the craft,” said Johnston on a recent preview tour. “Design is at the forefront of this project and we want visitors to take away the knowledge that small is beautiful. We are celebrating American Made in all we do.” Johnston will be at the helm of The Johnston Machine Co., a well-appointed tool shop where Johnston will craft and engineer high-end culinary equipment, among other in-demand items for the serious home chef. Step outside and visitors will want to taste the experimental wines and other fermented fruit libations at Garage-East. This nano-winery and distillery, named after Arizona winemaker and coowner Todd Bostock’s favorite unpronounceable wine, garagiste, will service the outside patios of Barnone with BYOB options. The common thread that can be found throughout this stop on Mesa’s Fresh Foodie Trail is that people can prosper on a small scale and learn how to make things in different and unique ways. Barnone’s promise is to give guests an enjoyable place to assemble and celebrate the makers that have tired hands and full hearts. For more information visit agritopia.com and barnoneaz.com.

ENJOY DINING, SHOPPING AND NIGHTLIFE EXPLORE GREATER PHOENIX’S EAST VALLEY DOWNTOWN DISTRICTS By Matt Seli

ocated in the fourth most populous county in the United States, Phoenix is just one of the many cities that comprise the Valley of the Sun. The Greater Phoenix metro area is home to many growing and thriving regions, especially within the bustling East Valley near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Here are three of the larger towns that have not only reinvented themselves, but the way Phoenix is viewed as a whole.

MESA

When you get off the plane, you will already be in one of Phoenix’s most vibrant suburbs. Mesa is not only home to one of Allegiant’s busiest airports, but also to a newly invigorated downtown that boasts everything a visitor can want. Don’t miss the acclaimed Mesa Arts Center for art galleries, live performances and events. The shopping enthusiasts in your group will love the many boutiques and unique stores; eateries such as Queens Pizzeria will curb any appetite; and chill spots like Jarrod’s Coffee Tea & Gallery will allow you to unwind. visitmesa.com

CHANDLER

Further south, Chandler is another Greater Phoenix town that has blossomed into a hip spot that locals and visitors have come to love. Shopping is abundant at boutiques such as Saba’s Western Wear and Sibley’s West: The Chandler and Arizona Gift shop. Dining is seemingly everywhere at restaurants like El Zocalo Mexican Grille and Crust (an Italian eatery). Those looking for nightlife should check out The Ostrich for some of the best craft cocktails any lounge in Arizona has to offer. visitchandler.com

GILBERT

Perhaps the most recent East Valley town to go through a revitalization, Gilbert has transformed from the agriculturally-centered community it once was to one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country. With this growth has come a vibrant downtown. Popular venues such as Postino Wine Café and Joyride Taco House for food and drink, and the Heritage District, filled with historic buildings boasting one-of-a-kind antiques, now call Gilbert home. Mirroring the city’s growth, Gilbert’s downtown will have six more restaurants opening at the beginning of 2017, including Clever Koi (an Asian-inspired restaurant and craft cocktail bar) and Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row (the country-

lthough the days when stagecoaches rumbled through the streets of Phoenix, Ariz., and cattlemen brought their herds to the city’s stockyards have long since passed, you can still enjoy dinners reminiscent of those times at these three landmark restaurants.

RAWHIDE’S STEAKHOUSE

Located in Rawhide Western Town, a replica 1880s town where costumed cowboys and gunfighters mingle with guests on dusty streets, Rawhide’s Steakhouse is one of the few places in the Valley where adventurous eaters can sample Rocky Mountain oysters (hint: they’re not really oysters) and fried rattlesnake. More traditional menu items include thick steaks, meatloaf, BBQ chicken and tri-tip. End your meal with the warm apple crisp. Rawhide’s Steakhouse is only open Fridays 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., so you may want to make reservations before you go. Plan on spending up to an additional three hours exploring the 80-acre town before or after your meal. rawhide.com

Or you can dine in Western elegance at the adjoining Dutchman’s Hide Out steakhouse, offering a specially crafted menu with Arizona at its heart. The Mining Camp, which opened in 1961, operates seven days a week from November to the end of April and on weekends May through October. Reservations are highly recommended. miningcamprestaurant.com

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

I just want to take a moment to express the gratitude toward your flight attendants. I was traveling with three children and was the only adult. They were extremely helpful and I really appreciated the great customer service. They even helped entertain the children. Thank you so very much to the awesome people who work for you.

– Deborah B., Fort Wayne

This was my first trip and I was so impressed with the crew on my return flight. I sat in the very front row of the plane and had the opportunity to watch Jorge and Iliana do their job so professionally and yet were extremely helpful and very nice. I look forward to flying again with Allegiant and hope to see these two again on a future flight!

– Jodie G., Oklahoma City

I sent an email asking for help with a rebate. On Saturday, I decided to phone Customer Care and sat patiently on the phone and eventually an Allegiant Air representative named Alison took my call. Calmly and professionally she addressed my issue and assured me that she could correct the error, which she did! The customer service she provided was outstanding and greatly appreciated. Thank you!

n Aug. 25, 2012, Allegiant provided travel for its first Make-A-Wish® Wish Kid. Since then, over 600 Wish Kids have flown on Allegiant to their wish destinations, over $400,000 in cash has been donated directly by Allegiant and over $270,000 has been donated by passengers through purchases of the Wingz Kids Snack Pack. To date, Allegiant has flown over 600 Wish Kids to their wish destinations including Serena, age 17, who on July 6, 2015, was Allegiant’s 300th wish kid. Serena flew to Hawaii for her wish to learn how to surf. In April 2016, Allegiant was proud to announce the expansion of its partnership with Make-A-Wish by donating office space to Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. The office space will be used as the Make-A-Wish chapter’s new headquarters, and will be located on Allegiant’s campus. The space will also be used for volunteer training, meetings and a place of support for families of children receiving wishes.

Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Headquartered in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 28,000 volunteers, Make-AWish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 35 minutes. It has granted more than 270,000 wishes since its inception in 1980; more than 14,800 in 2015 alone. Visit MakeA-Wish at wish.org to learn more. Valley of Fire State Park is located just an hour’s drive from Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS LIKE A LOCAL EXPERIENCE LAS VEGAS WITH THESE LOCAL FAVORITES By Auriyon Butler & Judy Jauregui

E

ver wonder where the locals like to eat, drink and play in Las Vegas? Las Vegas is much like any other towns, but with the twist of having the Strip in the middle of it all. Our Sunseeker experts asked Allegiant team members from Las Vegas to share a few of their favorite things to do in this city that never sleeps. Don’t be blinded by the city lights, there are spectacular experiences and memories to be made in the city Allegiant calls home – Viva Las Vegas!

WATCH ABSINTHE

Allegiant employees love this show for its perfect combination of adult entertainment, comedy and Cirque du Soleil theatrics. This is a show that will make you laugh until you cry and leave your mouth gaping in awe. It’s no wonder why this show continues to receive rave reviews night after night. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but this is one secret that you’ll want to share once you leave.

District and public spaces such as the Downtown Container Park have brought life back to the area that is now much more than just Fremont Street. Along with the unique restaurants and great bars, there is truly something everyone can enjoy Downtown. You’ll also find some of the best local restaurants in Las Vegas here. Le Thai and Carson Kitchen are notable favorites.

DRIVE TO VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK

Two words describe the Valley of Fire State Park: simply beautiful. While many travelers may never leave Las Vegas Boulevard during their trip, there’s so much to experience beyond the Strip. The Valley of Fire State Park is a must-see in the region with its breathtaking sandstone formations and brightly hued cliffs. Experience the best of both worlds by planning a day trip to the Valley of Fire during your stay. Just an hour’s drive from the Strip, Valley of Fire State Park is easy to get to and wallet-friendly.

WINE AND DINE AT FERRARO’S

Located less than 10 minutes from the Strip, this local authentic restaurant will have you wishing you lived in Las Vegas, too. Enjoy live music from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Tuesday through Saturday, or sample their calamari during their daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Treat yourself to a great Italian dinner paired with a nice glass of red or white wine from their extensive wine selection. Catering to a town full of night owls, this restaurant is conveniently open until 2 a.m. to fulfill any late night pasta cravings.

EXPLORE DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS

A short ride north of the Strip, the Downtown area has truly become an entertainment hub for locals and visitors alike. The up and coming Arts 70

Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.
