having the Vegas, but the chefknown for

Not only did Lagasse transform MGM Grand’s seafood restaurant into the immensely successful Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House back in 1995, but he was also the first celebrity chef to sign on to have his own restaurant—Delmonico Steakhouse—inside The Venetian when it opened in 1999. Once his culinary colleagues heard he was opening another restaurant in Las Vegas, several others soon followed. Now, the man who has traveled the world for Amazon’s Daytime Emmy Award-winning series “Eat the World with Emeril Lagasse” says anytime he’s asked which city has the best food, he honestly replies, “Paris, London, Rome—they’re all good, but have you ever been to Las Vegas?” “Everybody’s there,” Lagasse said. “You can get any type of cuisine you want!” Lagasse knows, though, that with the competition being so tough, chefs have to be “100 percent on their game or else they won’t be in the game for very long.” That’s why he encourages the staff at all three of his Las Vegas restaurants, including the sports-themed Lagasse’s Stadium inside The Palazzo, to “be creative and keep things exciting” for both their customers and themselves. “You can’t lay off the gas pedal,” Lagasse, who visits his Las Vegas restaurants every month, said. “You have to do better than you did yesterday. I’m still learning every day.” D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

Lagasse noted “not much is amiss” at Delmonico Steakhouse

While the menus tend to change at Lagasse’s restaurants twice a year, his chefs are regularly encouraged to cook up new experiences for guests to enjoy—like specials at Lagasse’s Stadium that are inspired by the cities of whatever teams are playing that day. These items join certain staples each restaurant has become known for over the years, like the charbroiled, Creoleseasoned steaks at Delmonico Steakhouse and the barbecued shrimp at Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House. Although Lagasse humbly credits the “incredible product and near-incredible service” with each restaurant’s success, his passion for what he does isn’t lost on repeat guests. “Never once have I woken up and said, ‘I got to go to work,’” Lagasse said. “This isn’t a job to me—this is my life. I just do a good job of feeding people.” For more on Emeril Lagasse’s Las Vegas restaurants, visit emerilsrestaurants.com. Dining ▪ 11

Sorry, Detroit. Ever since Las Vegas got its first NHL team, the Vegas Golden Knights, there’s been a new Hockeytown in America. Not only do fans continually show their support for the record-breaking expansion team by sporting Vegas Golden Knights jerseys and T-shirts, but several businesses around town have introduced special Vegas Golden Knights-themed products and services. THE PINEAPPLE FLEURY AT OTORO ROBATA GRILL & SUSHI INSIDE THE MIRAGE A fan favorite last season, this stylish Japanese restaurant has once again transformed its signature Pineapple Snow dessert to commemorate Vegas Golden Knights’ star goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury. The culinary scene in Las Vegas is constantly changing. However, there are a few restaurants around town that have withstood the test of time, thanks to their delectable dishes, and have truly earned the honor of being referred to as local favorites. MARCHÉ BACCHUS Celebrating its 19th anniversary in February, this charming French bistro in the Desert Shores community near Summerlin feels worlds away from the Strip. Boasting a breathtaking patio alongside Lake Jacqueline with glass enclosures, heaters and fireplaces to keep guests warm in the winter, the restaurant invites guests to enjoy a bottle of wine from its adjoining wine shop with their meal for only $10 over the retail price—a savings of almost half of what vino enthusiasts would pay at other Vegas restaurants. Guests can sip their selection while enjoying one of several signature items the bistro has become known for over the years for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch, like the Escargot “Persillade” and the Prince Edward Island Mussels. marchebacchus.com METRO PIZZA Founded in 1980 by cousins Sam Facchini and John Arena, who grew up making pizzas at their family pizzeria in New York, this neighborhood

pizzeria has five locations throughout Las Vegas— including two near the Strip (one on Tropicana Avenue and one inside Ellis Island Hotel, Casino & Brewery). Although best known for its pizzas, made from only the finest wheat, vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh vegetables and choice meats available, the relaxed restaurant offers a fairly extensive menu for lunch and dinner featuring everything from salads to subs. Flavorful favorites include the Sicilian-style 86th Street Square Pie, which has a light and airy crust that takes five days to rise and was a favorite of Frank Sinatra’s, and the meatball and provolone sliders served on fresh-baked garlic knots. metropizza.com PAMPLEMOUSSE Since 1976, this romantic restaurant has been wowing diners with its fabulous French Provencal fare, savory steaks and seafood. Located in a cozy house on East Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas’ oldest French restaurant was originally the idea of owner Georges La Forge and his intended partner Bobby Darin before the singer’s untimely death. Guests can relish a variety of prix fixe menus for dinner or order items à la carte, like the famous duck breast and leg confit that was once featured in Bon Appétit magazine, and the luscious French onion soup served with a splash of sherry on top. pamplemousserestaurant.com

Spiegelworld founder Ross Mollison knows that his production company is its “own biggest competitor” in Las Vegas, having launched the critically and commercially adored, acro-variety show “ABSINTHE” at Caesars Palace in 2011. However, while audience members may be quick to compare Spiegelworld’s latest adults-only production—the space-themed variety show “OPIUM” at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas—to “ABSINTHE,” Mollison knows “there’s no point in creating eight ‘ABSINTHES.’” “‘OPIUM’ is 80 minutes of raw, comedic fun built around unique acts versus acrobatics,” Mollison said. “We have all these incredible acts, including this new bubble artwork act, and we’re constantly refining the cast.”

Photos by Erik Kabik

Like “ABSINTHE,” which added approximately 20 artists to its cast since extending its performance schedule to two shows a night (“No two shows are the same,” Mollison noted. “We have it structured so that the 8 p.m. lineup is different from the 10 p.m. lineup to keep the artists fresh.”), “OPIUM” has added several new acts since its premiere last April. Mollison regularly travels the world scouting talent to bring to Las Vegas, so audiences are guaranteed to see some of the world’s greatest performers on both stages—like “OPIUM’s” new whip act which Mollison found at Burning Man.

natural to wonder if he has his sights set on making Spiegelworld a household name like Cirque du Soleil. “I don’t have any ambitions in that regard,” Mollison said. “I just want people to see the word Spiegelworld and expect something that will surprise and delight them. I don’t think of us as competing with other shows in town—we work together with shows like Cirque du Soleil and Penn & Teller to draw people to Las Vegas. The more well known we become, though, the more people will know what we do, because we don’t want some miserable person sitting in the front row hating the show, either. Forty-three million people visit Las Vegas each year—we don’t need to sell that many tickets.” For more on Spiegelworld and its Las Vegas productions, visit spiegelworld.com.

Yuri and Sputnik, one of “OPIUM’s” out-of-this-world acts

“They’re like sports teams,” Mollison said of the casts. “Each act works hard to keep their place on the team because they know if they’re not hitting their marks, there are other acts out there who want to take their place.” With “OPIUM’s” popularity constantly reaching new heights and Mollison hoping to open another production in Las Vegas later this year, it’s only D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

There’s no better way to celebrate the start of a new year in Las Vegas than by seeing one of the city’s newest shows. Las Vegas’ entertainment scene has worthwhile additions that should be at the top of every visitor’s must-see list. “FRIENDS! THE MUSICAL PARODY” AT THE D LAS VEGAS This hilarious musical not only brings to life some of the classic sitcom’s most memorable moments (Ross in his leather pants, Thanksgiving 1987), but also playfully pokes fun at how ridiculous certain plot points were. Fans will be amazed at just how much the musical touches upon from the series’ 10-season run (Janice, Richard, even Paul the Wine Guy) while condensing Ross and Rachel’s will-they-or-won’t-they love story into 90 minutes. Featuring such comical numbers as “We Were on a Break” (which follows a brief intermission) and “Pivot,” this is definitely ‘The One Las Vegas Show Every “Friends” Fan Should See.’ thed.com/ entertainment/showroom-at-the-d “I LOVE THE ’90S – THE VEGAS SHOW” AT PARIS LAS VEGAS Step back in time at this nostalgic concert production, which features performances by some of the biggest music acts from the 90s. En Vogue, Mark McGrath and Kid ‘n Play has performed as part of the show since its premiere last October, stepping onto a 90s-themed stage that’s a bit reminiscent of the set from “In Living Color.” The party starts from the moment guests enter the theater, as not only is there a DJ spinning some of the decade’s greatest hits, but there’s also a massive screen onstage playing commercials from the 90s. Regardless of which three acts are performing, audiences are guaranteed a trip down memory lane that hits all the right notes. ilovethe90s.vegas “A MOB STORY” AT PLAZA HOTEL & CASINO One of the city’s most unique shows, this dazzling production tells the tale of how the mob made Las Vegas and how Las Vegas eventually took down the mob. While some of the stories are told through actors and dancers, others are shared by someone who actually experienced them firsthand: former Colombo family capo and the last Godfather, Michael Franzese. Audience members can even ask Franzese questions during a brief Q&A. While Franzese’s stories are compelling, the talented dancers steal the spotlight every chance they get, as does tenor Joey Spinella, who appears in the production as the singing “Don Popera.” plazahotelcasino.com/ entertainment/a-mob-story

You can never have too much of a good thing, as proven by certain classic Las Vegas productions. In a city known for change, some stellar shows continue to stand strong against the competition by wowing audiences year after year. “LEGENDS IN CONCERT” AT TROPICANA LAS VEGAS For more than 35 years, this toe-tapping production has hit all the right notes with audiences thanks to its ever-changing cast of performers who pay tribute to some of the music industry’s brightest stars—artists like Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. Now, the longest-running show in Las Vegas is getting ready to team up with another local legend when it kicks off an all-new residency the second week of February at one of the Strip’s most iconic resorts, Tropicana Las Vegas. No matter which tribute artists are performing, ticket holders are guaranteed a concert experience they won’t soon forget. Ideal for kids and kids at heart, the action-packed production features jousting knights, galloping horses, dancing maidens and plenty of pyrotechnics. Guests also get to enjoy a delicious three-course meal with their hands, including arguably the best tomato soup—or “Dragon’s Blood”—on the Strip. Additionally, various comedic characters, including a pair of sex expert clowns, help keep audiences from ever getting too hot and bothered while still keeping things delightfully naughty. “Billie Jean” is one of Franca’s favorite numbers to perform

A THRILLING CONCERT EXPERIENCE J A L L E S F R A N C A K E E P S T H E M E M O RY O F M I C H A E L J AC KSO N A L I V E I N ‘ M J L I V E ’ By Heather Turk

When Jalles Franca was 9 years old living in Brazil, his mother bought him a copy of Michael Jackson’s "Dangerous." Even though he didn’t speak English, Franca remembers connecting to the music. Soon, he found himself putting on some white socks and a hat and dancing in front of a mirror, mimicking some of Jackson’s signature dance moves from music videos like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.” A natural born performer, Franca had no idea at the time how the King of Pop would end up shaping his life.

Now starring in the hit “MJ Live” Michael Jackson tribute concert at Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower, Franca is one of the world’s best Michael Jackson tribute artists. While one might think he always wanted to perform as his idol, it was a chance encounter with a stranger in Las Vegas that set Franca on his career path. “I was working as a dancer and percussionist at Studio 54 inside MGM Grand for seven years when the economy crashed in 2009,” Franca, who moved to Las Vegas at the age of 16, recalled. “I lost my job, couldn’t find a new one and went through my savings pretty quickly. All of these clubs were having costume contests around Halloween, though, so I dressed up as Michael Jackson and won some money. When I was walking through the casino one night, a guy asked if he could take his photo with me and gave me $20. I told him he didn’t need to do that, but then a lightbulb went off in my head.” Franca ended up taking his act to the streets working as a Michael Jackson street performer. Eventually he auditioned for “MJ Live” and now, almost six years later, he’s making a living keeping Jackson’s music and spirit alive. Backed by a three-piece band, Franca sings 19 of Jackson’s greatest hits during the 75-minute show, including “Thriller” and a medley from The Jackson 5. While he acknowledged that it’s important to look, sound and move like Jackson, the key part of being a successful tribute artist in Franca’s opinion is connecting with the crowd.

to them. Otherwise, people won’t respect you as a tribute artist,” Franca said. “I’m just like everyone in the audience—I’m a Michael Jackson fan. People always tell me, ‘Oh, I’m such a fan of yours,’ but I’m just playing someone else. This isn’t my work. I didn’t write this music or choreograph these routines— Michael did. I’m just the link to Michael and his songs since he’s not here anymore.”

Photo of "Billie Jean" by Shane O’Neal; Jalles Franca as Michael Jackson, "MJ Live" and Jalles Franca preforms five nights a week by Joshua Chévere Cohen

Franca wants audiences to know he’s not trying to be a “photocopy of Michael Jackson.” He knows no matter how good his moonwalk might be on a given night, there will always be someone in the audience who thinks it’s just “alright.” He simply does the best his body and voice will allow, which is partly why he doesn’t strain himself to do more numbers during the show. “Everyone has a favorite Michael Jackson song, so it’s hard to please everyone,” Franca said. “We literally don’t have the time to sing all of his hits. If we did, I’d be singing for two weeks straight and wouldn’t have a voice!” “MJ Live’s” performance schedule is already demanding enough, as the show runs seven nights a week. Franca took on that grueling schedule by himself once before and lost 18 pounds in the process. Today, he shares the stage with another stellar Michael Jackson tribute artist, Santana Jackson, who performs in the show on Friday and Saturday nights. That doesn’t mean Franca has two nights off a week, though. Franca often takes his act on the road and has even performed at weddings and birthday parties held in Jackson’s former Las Vegas residence, the Thriller Villa. “I just like putting his face on mine and shining a light on him in a small way,” Franca said. “I want to help people relive the magic he created.” D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

Jalles Franca performs five nights a week in “MJ Live”

Franca actually had the honor of meeting Jackson twice when he was younger, long before he portrayed him onstage. Unbeknownst to Jackson, the pop star actually got Franca fired from his job working as a sales associate once when the star-struck fan complimented Jackson on the hat he was wearing even though his boss told him not to talk to the icon. Franca clearly has no hard feelings toward Jackson. “If I saw Michael today, I’d just do the same thing I did when I saw him briefly at MGM Grand many years ago,” Franca said. “I’d simply give him a firm hug and thank him for everything he’s done.” “MJ Live” performs nightly at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit mjliveshow.com. f e at u r e s to ry ▪ 2 9

Carrot Top may be one of the Strip’s most beloved entertainers, but the hilarious prop comic wasn’t instantly winning over audiences when he first came to Las Vegas.

recalled. “He starts screaming, ‘Top!’ and hugs me. We ended up having a 15-minute conversation. I left that moment going, ‘Holy s$%t. That was cool.’”

“It took me a while to figure out the type of show people wanted to see in Las Vegas,” Carrot Top, whose real name is Scott Thompson, told Sunseeker. “I was playing the big room at Bally’s after doing great in its comedy club, and I just couldn’t find my confidence.”

While Thompson may be living the dream, his favorite part of being a comedian is making a difference in other people’s lives.

After moving to a smaller room at MGM Grand, Thompson slowly started to get his rhythm back. Now, the longtime Luxor headliner humbly acknowledges that he’s “a little better,” although he knows he’s only as good as his last show. Luckily when Sunseeker caught up with him, his last show featured Louie Anderson as his surprise opening act!

“Louie is my hero,” Thompson stated. “I used to watch him on ‘The Tonight Show’ and to see him introduce me was just surreal.”

“One of the victims from the Las Vegas shooting who survived being shot in the head came to my show (in late 2018),” Thompson stated. “She hadn’t really left her house much since then and told me how my show was the first time she really laughed all year. Sometimes you forget people literally need to laugh. I’m so blessed to have this job that lets me be a part of that healing process. I get to make people smile and laugh and forget their problems.” Carrot Top performs Wednesday through Monday at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit luxor.com.

Having celebrated 13 years at Luxor last November, Thompson has experienced a lot of surreal moments since becoming one of the Strip’s signature acts. His show, which features a mix of prop and standup comedy, continually has celebrities in the audience, with Queen drummer Roger Taylor recently visiting the production. A true celebrity favorite, even when Thompson isn’t performing in Las Vegas, he is bumping into famous fans. “Once I was walking back from a gym in Aspen at 9 a.m. and across the street I see Jack Nicholson walking toward me,” Thompson D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

Following in the footsteps of such country music legends as Garth Brooks and Reba McEntire, Grammy Award-winning trio Lady Antebellum will kick off their first Las Vegas residency in February. Staged inside Palms Casino Resort’s newly renovated Pearl Concert Theater, Lady Antebellum’s “OUR KIND OF VEGAS” marks the first country music residency at the offStrip venue. Featuring some of the group’s greatest hits, including the pop crossover “Need You Now,” which Hillary Scott said will always be one of Lady Antebellum’s favorite songs to sing, the production is set to bring some Nashville to Sin City with strippeddown performances each night that will often feature the songwriters behind the group’s hit singles. “After touring together for over a decade, we’ve been experimenting with a lot of ways to intertwine more intimate moments that wouldn’t really work in the large venues that we are used to,” said Scott, who along with 3 2 ▪ h e a d l i n e r E N t e rta i n m e n t

Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood make up the chart-topping group. “Performing in Vegas will give us that chance, and to also pull out all the stops production-wise. We want to bring that big production that Vegas is known for, but at the same time, we will definitely strip down some of the fan favorites and put a new spin on those.” Although Scott didn’t want to spoil the surprise by revealing who some of Lady Antebellum’s special guests will be, she promised that fans won’t be disappointed by who will be joining the group onstage select nights for their residency. “We’re excited to have the chance to bring some of our songwriting friends from Nashville onstage to sing the songs we created together,” she said. “We just finished our 'Summer Plays On' Tour where we were playing amphitheaters every night,” Scott said. “While that is obviously an exhilarating experience, I can’t wait to switch it up by playing in a smaller space. The intimacy of the Pearl theater is what really drew us to the venue. We’re going to be able to hear the folks in the 15th row singing back, and I can’t wait for that. It’s going to be a perfect place to really connect with fans.” While Lady Antebellum will still be performing at several festivals in 2019, those performances will be different from their Las Vegas show. Following a record-setting, 10-year residency at Luxor Hotel and Casino, Criss Angel celebrated a homecoming of sorts this past December when his new show, “Criss Angel MINDFREAK,” debuted at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino— the same resort he started filming his hit A&E TV show “MINDFREAK” at in 2005 when it was the Aladdin. An artistic endeavor Angel described as “20 years in the making,” “Criss Angel MINDFREAK” is an entirely new production despite having a similar sounding name to its Luxor predecessor, “Criss Angel MINDFREAK LIVE!” “Of course, I have to do the hits, but they’ve been reworked and are performed in a different context,” Angel told Sunseeker. “This show is truly beyond anything I’ve ever done. Not only is there a tremendous amount of new content, but the amount of sensory overload is revolutionary. The show has more video, more lights and more pyrotechnics than any other show in the world. It’s very ambitious, and I feel like it will usher in a new era of entertainment in Las Vegas.”

Angel admitted that he turned down a lucrative offer to go back on the road in order to launch his new five-year residency but insists at this point in his career, he “couldn’t care less about money.” His true passion is to continue to create, which his new show schedule allows him the freedom to do while also being a dedicated dad. “I admit, doing 460 shows a year wasn’t fun,” Angel said. “But this new show schedule (just 260 performances in 2019) appealed to me because it made performing fun again while also giving me the time to explore other aspects of my talent. I’ve always wanted to act, I love producing and directing. I love to challenge myself, so fans never know where I might pop up next.” "Criss Angel MINDFREAK" runs Wednesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. with an additional 9:30 p.m. performance on select nights. Throughout the 90-minute show, audiences are treated to more than 75 jaw-dropping illusions and effects, including several illusions Angel has never previously performed on stage. “You’re going to see somebody cut in two like you never have before,” Angel said. “Someone— maybe even you—will levitate out of their seat. I’m going to take audiences on a journey into a creepy attic where their fears will come to life, then we’re going to go to a club. For those who have ever wondered what it would be like to operate those huge bulldozers, excavators or other heavy machinery sometimes seen at construction sites, Dig This is just the place for you. Located just off the Las Vegas Strip, Dig This was first imagined by New Zealand native Ed Mumm in 2006 when he was using heavy equipment for the first time building his home in Colorado. During this experience, he thought that if he was having this much fun, other people were sure to as well. With this motivation, the initial Dig This location was opened in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in 2007, ultimately moving to Las Vegas in 2011.

Photos by Briar Mckendrick

Since then, Dig This has been the recipient of many top tourism awards such as TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Winner (2012-present), TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame Winner (2018) and Best of Las Vegas’ #1 Extreme Adventure Experience (2015). Not bad for a Kiwi with a dream. Dig This has a number of experiences to choose from, getting you behind the controls of equipment like bulldozers, excavators and track loaders. With each experience, instructors will be there to guide you through different exercises and activities such as building large dirt mounds, pushing huge tires, balancing on a “mega-mound,” digging trenches and even playing a game of “Bucket Basketball.” Those looking to let out some stress or anger should try the “Aggression Session,” giving you the chance to destroy a car with their 30,000-pound. Caterpillar excavator. No matter the reason for your visit, both the young and old will have a blast getting behind the controls. D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

Don’t want to play it safe this vacation? It’s easy to have a bona fide adventure in downtown Las Vegas, with experiences guaranteed to shake up your visit. Face Your Fear Gather your courage and brave the part-maze, part-interactive video game attraction Fear the Walking Dead Survival at Fremont Street Experience. Inspired by AMC’s hit TV show Fear the Walking Dead, it combines the fright of a zombie outbreak with the thrill of an escape room using elaborate sets, immersive audio and high-tech motion simulator technology. Set against a temporary military medical facility, you’ll need to outwit the flesh-hungry hoard in various zones—and if you’re lucky, you’ll exit alive! vegasexperience.com/fear-walking-deadsurvival-attraction-las-vegas Feel The Rush If you're looking for a shot of adrenaline, head to Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower where you’ll find a handful of thrill rides sure to rattle your nerves. One of the most intense is X-Scream, which will catapult you head first off the 109th story and then snap you back to do it all over again! Basically, this ride is like a giant teeter-totter, but instead of being situated firmly on the ground, it’s perched precariously on the tower’s edge 866 feet above the ground. If you survive X-Scream, perhaps the others—Big Shot, Insanity and SkyJump—will entice you too. stratospherehotel.com/thrillrides Take A Shot At Fighting Crime Want to feel what it’s like to walk in the shoes of law enforcement? By H. Wadowski

Since acquiring the historic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino in 2010 (goldengatecasino.com), Derek Stevens has been a key figure in the revival of downtown Las Vegas. Not only has he expanded and renovated the city’s oldest hotel and casino, but he also purchased the nearby Fitzgeralds in 2011 and rebranded it into the D Las Vegas in 2012 (thed.com). Now, Stevens is set to change the landscape along Fremont Street Experience once again with a new hotel-casino across from Golden Gate that is unlike anything downtown Las Vegas has seen before. Although the property is still in the early stages of development, Stevens told Sunseeker that it will be home to several spectacular attractions, including a pool and the largest sports book in Las Vegas. Like its sister properties, the new casino-hotel will boast several modern amenities while still, as Stevens put it, “touching upon the past that got Las Vegas to where it is today.”

The new resort will help continue to showcase downtown Las Vegas as a destination in its own right. Stevens said he’s already noticed an “explosion of growth” in recent years thanks to additions like the D’s elegant Italian steakhouse, Andiamo, and the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (dlvec.com), which Stevens opened adjacent to the D in 2014. “When the Events Center first opened, it started as a place for concerts and a couple of food events,” Stevens said. “Now, it’s evolved into a place for people to enjoy all these different watch parties.” The D’s LONGBAR is another popular spot downtown with sports fans. Stretching 100 feet across the casino floor, Nevada’s longest bar has 15 70-inch televisions to catch all of the action on. Stevens can often be found at LONGBAR cheering on his latest wager while visiting with customers. As Stevens helps downtown Las Vegas continue to grow, he wants visitors to know that he’s not competing with the Strip.

“Downtown Las Vegas only has 6,000 hotel rooms, but 24 million people visited downtown last year,” Stevens said. “It’s great to stay here, but it’s also a great place to visit for a night. I think it’s very complementary to the Strip. People can enjoy great food and drinks at Fremont East, then come to Fremont Street Experience and casino hop while enjoying free entertainment on three different stages. There’s so much action going on—it’s a party every night.” e n t e rta i n m e n t ▪ 4 5

Everyone knows that the way to someone’s heart is through their belly. So, if it’s time for a little wooing, there’s no better place to do it than the romantic restaurants of downtown Las Vegas. ANDIAMO STEAKHOUSE The name of the restaurant translates to “let’s go,” so when you get to the D Las Vegas expect to “go” all out in an elegant, dimly lit atmosphere. From one of the intimate tables or booths, whisper sweet nothings to each other while enjoying Andiamo’s fresh breads, tasty sauces, handmade pastas and premium meats. PIZZA ARIZONA C E L E B R AT I N G N AT I O N A L P I Z Z A DAY IN PHOENIX By Teresa Bitler

February 9 is National Pizza Day, and believe it or not, Phoenix boasts some of the nation’s best pizza. In fact, the New York Times once declared, “The road to pizza nirvana goes through Phoenix.” While everyone has their favorite style, crust and toppings, if you find yourself in Phoenix, there are pizzerias firing up some of the city’s best pies. PIZZERIA BIANCO New York native Chris Bianco, who won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2003, is credited for starting the artisanal pizza movement. Although he no longer tosses the dough or fires the pies, Pizzeria Bianco still serves some of the best pizza you’ll ever taste at its Heritage Square and Town & Country locations. Rachel Ray Every Day even rated Pizzeria Bianco the best pizza in the nation.

POMO PIZZERIA Pomo Pizzeria’s locations in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Gilbert serve authentic Napoletana pizza baked at 905 degrees Fahrenheit in hand-built, wood-burning ovens for a crust with crispy edges and a soft center. Several new additions to the menu are not to be missed. Sample the Regina, slathered in tomato sauce and covered with mozzarella and parmigiana, or the Crudo E Rucola with prosciutto, stracchino cheese and arugula. The eggplant-topped Parmigiana is getting rave reviews. Whichever you order, save room for a scoop of gelato produced locally at Luna Gelateria. pomopizzeria.com

SPINATO’S PIZZERIA When the Spinato family moved from Chicago to Phoenix, they worried about finding good pizza here. So, instead of leaving it to chance, they opened Spinato’s Pizzeria in 1974. Today, Spinato’s has five locations in the Valley and sells frozen pizzas, pasta sauces and dressings at retailers across the nation. Meat lovers won’t regret ordering the Get Meaty pizza, featuring Italian sausage, Italian beef, pepperoni, smoked Canadian bacon and 54 ▪ Dining

CALLING ALL CITY SLICKERS EXPERIENCE DUDE RANCH LIFE IN MESA By Kate Wallace

Mesa, Arizona, promises a winter escape unlike any other in the Southwest. Western heritage and attractions share a storied history of a bygone era, and authentic Sonoran Desert beauty with mountains and canyon lands surrounding the city can be explored all winter long. One of the more treasured experiences this time of year is at Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch, just northeast of Mesa, nestled at the junction where the lake meets the lower Salt River.

While here, soak up authentic cowboy life with on-site horseback riding and incredible hikes only accessible to guests that delve into the

New this winter is Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch’s Saturday Night Cowboy Cookouts, which are open to the public and a great way to experience the ranch. These popular dinners feature steaks straight off the grill and are followed up with s’mores around the campfire under a starfilled sky. The ranch’s unique location and low light pollution offer some of the best night sky viewing in Mesa. When touring the grounds of the ranch, be prepared to see wild horses that roam throughout this area of the Tonto National Forest and the adjacent reservation. The wild mustang herd is admired by locals and visitors are sure to see them on the cactus-studded paths that lead across the river. WHERE THE LAKE MEETS THE CITY E n j oy t h e Day at T e m p e Tow n L a k e By Matt Seli

Winter time in the Sonoran Desert is full of sunshine, shorts and pullovers, and most importantly, not snow. There aren’t many areas in the country as enjoyable as the Phoenix area during this time of year, and places such as Tempe Town Lake are examples of why so many people from all over the world either visit or relocate here while the snow falls in their home towns. Tempe Town Lake may be new to those who haven’t been to the Valley of the Sun for some time. Located in the northern part of Tempe, near Arizona State University, Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe’s Mill Avenue District and Papago Park, the 2-plus mile long “lake” was created back in 1999 by adding water and damming a portion of the dried-up Salt River. Nowadays, it is popular public attraction, with beautiful scenic views and recreational activities both on land and on the water.

In addition to being both beautiful and fun, Tempe Town Lake is also an engineering marvel. Initially a rubber dam system, a new hydraulically-operated steel gate dam is now present on the west end of Tempe Town Lake to allow for excess water to be released in times of major water flow events. On land, there are activities aplenty with walking, jogging and bicycling paths lining both sides of the lake, and bicycle rentals available to guests. In addition, visitors can enjoy Segway tours, volleyball courts or historical hiking trails that include Native American ruins from the area’s earliest inhabitants. For those looking to get out on the water, multiple boat rental options are available. THE MODERN AGE MO D E R N I S M WEEK I N LU X U R I O U S PALM SPRINGS By Sean Davies

In the throngs of winter, people flock to the oasis of luxury that is Palm Springs. Known for its fabulous weather, the California destination cajoles visitors with sunny poolside leisure. But if these visitors were to turn their heads away from the back yard, they may notice that the sundrenched patios that they enjoy so much are attached to marvels of modern architecture, and only one week a year do the stunning modernist manors collectively open their doors for passing tours.

The Park Imperial South Home Tour takes guests to the first structure ever designed by Barry Berkus, one of the world's most successful architects. A perfect example of the style, the folded plate roofs, floor-to-ceiling windows and terrazzo floors of the Park Imperial South Midcentury Condominiums stand in homage to their 1960s beginnings and the legendary designer that thought them up. Attendees can also explore one of the only remaining buildings by Albert Frey, The Cree House, a meticulously preserved home perched on a desert hillside, in The Forgotten Frey: The Cree House tour. The structure is indicative of Frey’s style, with huge jutting balconies suspended above untouched desert landscape, and it’s only open to the public during this week. Even the history of Palm Springs is entrenched in the modernist movement, as explored in presentations like Mod Mirage: The Midcentury 6 4 ▪ R ec r e at i o n

The multitude of tours includes trips inside country clubs, estates and gardens, and the line-up of events features films, presentations and attractions like synchronized swimming, swanky parties and catered showcases. There is no better way to gain access to the glitz and glamour that Palm Springs has always been known for than Modernism Week. For tickets to events and more information, visit modernismweek.com.

Palm Springs is home to many fine examples of modernism, and during Modernism Week from February 14-24, these establishments are showcased in tours that regail visitors in stories of the construction and design of homes that were built by some of the most renowned architects, and the people who lived in them.

Architecture and History of Rancho Mirage. Author of "Mod Mirage," the first book about midcentury architecture in Rancho Mirage and local historian Melissa Riche will take guests on a trip through time, revealing how the 1950s creation of Thunderbird and Tamarisk Country Clubs transformed the barren desert into a stylish retreat, luring a cadre of celebrities from Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack to Presidents Eisenhower through Reagan.

TOP LAS VEGAS HOTEL RESTAURANTS with a view By Christopher Lewis

Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower At 1,149 feet, the Stratosphere Tower is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States, over 500 feet taller than Seattle’s Space Needle. It stands at the north end of the Strip with unparalleled views of the entire Las Vegas valley. At 800 feet is the award-winning Top of the World Restaurant. Rated “Best Fine Dining Restaurant” and “Best Restaurant with a View” by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Top of the World revolves 360 degrees every 80 minutes—every table with a view of its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Restaurant one of America’s most romantic restaurants. Chef Joho’s modern interpretation of classic French cuisine is one reason why it’s received multiple AAA Four Diamond awards.

The Bellagio Fountains

Bellagio las vegas The dancing Bellagio Fountains may seem cliché at this point, having delighted crowds on the Strip for the past 20 years, but no matter how many times you’ve seen the show, it’s a spectacle that never ceases to captivate your attention. Wolfgang Puck’s Spago provides some of the best views directly in front of the action. Winner of the Global Cuisine Awards 2018 for Best American Restaurant, Spago offers al fresco dining right in front of the fountains. Expect to be served the freshest hand-made pastas, wood-oven pizzas, seafood and all-natural meats alongside handcrafted cocktails and a robust wine list. Paris las vegas The Paris Las Vegas' Eiffel Tower is about half the size of the original, but Las Vegas’ version includes a restaurant more than 100 feet above the Strip, overlooking the city lights and Bellagio fountains. With all of its glitz, the Las Vegas Strip is easily one of the most iconic scenes in the United States, if not the world. Especially at night, a view of The Strip becomes one of those moments never to be forgotten. Not only does the strip deliver the very best views, it also boasts the finest cuisine.

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT f ro m o u r pa s s e n g e r s

Just wanted to say thank you for the tickets to see George Strait in Las Vegas. If winning them during our flight wasn’t enough, we felt like celebrities going through the VIP entrance and then into Allegiant’s suite. George Strait puts on a great show. Pass my appreciation on to all who made this possible.

- SUSAN S, NEVADA

I was running late and by the time I got to the ticket counter they had stopped accepting bags for loading. The wonderful lady [at the counter] told me to hurry, and she immediately phoned the gate to tell them I was coming. I ran – bags falling, purse strapped around my neck – but I was able to make it to surprise my mother on her 89th birthday. You are wonderful and I’m forever grateful.

- JANELLE N, TEXAS

Flew home today from Punta Gorda and everything went perfectly. What made the flight even more enjoyable was the flight attendant named Jorge. He was so friendly and very funny. He put us all at ease right away and set the tone for a relaxing flight. Thank you very much for employing such a pleasant, people person.

The Ashville team during Allegiant’s annual canned food drive

A L L E G I A N T S P OT L I G H T

COMPETING FOR A GOOD CAUSE By Kerry McGee

From Asheville to Des Moines, from Florida to our headquarters in Las Vegas and plenty of places in between, Allegiant held its annual canned food drive competition in November. Team members from across the country were encouraged to bring in nonperishable and canned foods to donate to local organizations in their community. With culture as one of our most valuable assets, it was no surprise that more than 20 teams signed up to participate – our biggest competition yet! After nearly three weeks of collecting items and raising money to buy more items, the top two winning teams were awarded a group outing sponsored by our culture & engagement team. However, the real winners are those in each community directly impacted by the food drive. With help from hundreds of our team members, we were able to provide food and meals to nearly 30 nonprofit organizations in more than 26 communities across the country.

68 ▪ SUNSEEKER

This friendly competition is just one of the many things that we do to foster teamwork, one of our core values, while also creating a positive impact in the communities we call home. Allegiant team members are not only proud to be a part of the hometown airline of more than 120 cities across the U.S., but also to serve each of these communities in a more meaningful way through initiatives like the food drive.

Inside the Airbus cockpit during Girls in Aviation Day

ALLEGIANT CARES

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION A l l e g i a n t h e l p s t h os e s e e k i n g a c a r e e r i n av i at i o n By Christopher Lewis

The future is bright for those wishing to pursue an aviation career. During the next 20 years, more than 200,000 pilots will be needed in the United States and global demand will reach 800,000, according to Boeing officials. Demand for pilots also means a demand for other airline professionals, such as flight attendants and mechanics. Allegiant recently participated in two events designed to fuel the passions of the next generation and provided scholarships for two Las Vegas high school seniors.

In October, the Las Vegas chapter of Women in Aviation, along with Allegiant, hosted the third annual Girls in Aviation Day at McCarran International Airport. Girls, ages 8-18, attended activities that included lessons on how airplanes fly, flight planning and drone piloting as well as a tour of an Allegiant Airbus aircraft, and listened to a panel featuring several women in various aviation fields. Girls got to board the aircraft to learn about what happens in the flight deck and in the cabin, and do a walk-around inspection with a couple of Allegiant’s locally-based female pilots.

enrolled in the Academy of Aviation at Las Vegasbased Rancho High School. The program is one of only a few high school aviation programs in the United States, and students had the opportunity to hear from pilots, flight crews, maintenance technicians, airport planning and marketing professionals. Students listened to guest lectures and participated in hands-on activities to learn what it’s like to operate an airline, such as scheduling routes and creating marketing campaigns. Allegiant also announced during the event it will award two $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors at the end of the school year.

“We want these girls to see that there are great careers available to them as engineers, pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers and dozens of other jobs within the aviation community,” says Michelle Cohen, WAI president and Allegiant’s director of stations. “We hope this exposure will show our participants that not even the sky is the limit when it comes to opportunities for women in aviation.” In November, representatives from several departments within Allegiant visited students
