AMBRA ITALIAN KITCHEN + BAR AT MGM GRAND Open nightly for dinner, this sensual restaurant showcases a variety of flavors found throughout different regions of Italy. Sunseeker recommends pairing the Nara Special teppanyaki experience — filet mignon, chicken and lobster served with a delicious beef broth soup, salad, vegetables and rice — with the pork and vegetable Fried Gyoza from the à la carte menu. A selection of sushi is available as well, and there’s a special menu of Korean dishes available for breakfast. chosunnara.com THE CRACK SHACK AT PARK MGM Already a favorite with foodies in California, this gourmet chicken eatery by “Top Chef AllStars’” Richard Blais serves some of the best chicken on the Strip for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition to its succulent Jidori Fried Chicken, which guests can pair with a variety of dipping sauces, diners can relish an assortment of items, including bowls, sandwiches and even Chicken Oysters. The Mexican Poutine is perfect for sharing, while the G-Bird — a grilled chicken breast sandwich made with shishito pepper relish, Swiss cheese, romaine, tomato and whole wheat brioche — explodes with flavor. When it’s time for dessert, guests can relish selections from Momofuku’s next-door neighbor, Milk Bar (try a slice of its Birthday Cake), or order one of the restaurant’s innovative new sweets. The Fresh Soymilk Ice Cream Sundae is sure to be a real palate pleaser and comes with a variety of toppings, including bite-sized mochi. Momofuku has a special afternoon and latenight menu as well at its neon-lit Peach Bar that features such flavorful options as the Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich, which is marinated in three different types of chilies before being double fried to perfection. Banksy’s 700-pound “Stop Esso”

A THOUGHT-PROVOKING EXHIBITION

‘ B A N KS Y : G E N I U S O R VA N DA L ? ’ L E AV E S ITS MARK ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP By Heather Turk

It seems only fitting that an exhibition about one of the world’s most controversial artists has made its United States debut in Sin City. Located inside Immersion Vegas, a brandnew venue at Fashion Show that brings a revolving collection of exhibitions and interactive attractions to the Las Vegas Strip, “BANKSY: GENIUS OR VANDAL?” showcases more than 70 original creations from the groundbreaking and mysterious street artist. Although the exhibition has already been seen by more than a million people during its runs in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), Spain (Madrid) and Portugal (Lisbon), it will be slightly different in Las Vegas for those who were lucky enough to see it overseas. Banksy’s “Holocaust Lipstick”

The first time a collection of this size is being shown in the U.S., “BANKSY: GENIUS OR VANDAL?” features the highest value collection of Banksy artworks from European private collectors ever presented — including “Rose Trap,” “Holocaust Lipstick,” “Heavy Weaponry” and the 700-pound “Stop Esso” — organized into various thematic sections. “Our curator spent two years convincing collectors of the value in presenting their artwork globally,” said Christoph Rahofer, president and CEO of EMS Entertainment, which is producing the exhibition. “In my personal opinion, it pays off well for them. A piece of art should be accessible to the public and provoke, educate, inspire and engage, while being immersive and giving the visitor a sense of experience.” While guests go through the 12,000-squarefoot, unofficial exhibition, they will see “one-ofa-kind” artworks, 3D objects, limited editions, photographs, video installations and a speciallycreated multimedia presentation. They can also listen to a free downloadable audio guide available on the izi.travel platform and app that gives deeper insight into the background of each piece, so they can decide for themselves whether Banksy is a genius or a vandal. “To me, ‘BANKSY: GENIUS OR VANDAL?’ is a one-of-a-kind synthesis of art from an unknown, a rebel, a disruptor,” Rahofer stated. “It shall

and will motivate people to step up for diversity, political awareness and global change.”

Banksy’s ironic and witty works are a protest against politics, war, capitalism and mortality, while becoming an artistic scavenger hunt for journalists, photographers, vandals and art critics alike. The so-called “Banksy effect,” a huge interest in street art and street artists, blew up the world art market, resulting in graffiti works, made on the verge of kitsch, being sold at prestigious auctions for record amounts. The apotheosis of Banksy’s struggle with the modern art establishment was his 2018 performance at the Sotheby’s auction, where he shredded his famous “Girl with Balloon” painting. The Banksy effect continues, evident in the recent Sotheby’s sale of his chimp-depicting “Devolved Parliament,” which sold for more than $12 million. Banksy’s art is modern mythology shrouded in secret, intrigue, provocation and scandal. “BANKSY: GENIUS OR VANDAL?” isn’t the first time Banksy has left his mark on Las Vegas. The restaurant Greene St. Kitchen inside Palms Casino Resort is home to the city’s first permanent Banksy work, “Smiley Coppers Panel I” — an 88.25-inch-by-74-inch spraypainted depiction of two heavily armed police officers with neon yellow smiley faces. “I think that having another place in town with a Banksy is great and just solidifies the notion that people want to see a Banksy in real life,” Rahofer noted. “It’s rare, and now we have brought so many pieces together under one roof, it will be a bit mind-blowing to some. Las Vegas is a melting pot of people from around the world. [This exhibition] will provide great feedback on the relevance of Banksy on a local and global level.”

“BANKSY: GENIUS OR VANDAL?” will be on display at Immersion Vegas through April 5, when it will then leave for Paris, France. Hours of operation for the limited engagement are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the final admission an hour before closing. Tickets cost $29 for adults and $15 for children ages 11 and younger, plus applicable fees. Rahofer recommends guests give themselves at least 45 minutes to an hour to get through the exhibition, although many visitors will likely want to spend more time taking advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close to the art. Banksy fans will surely want to visit the adjoining 3,000-square-foot retail store, too, which sells an assortment of exclusive merchandise. Highlights include print-on-demand services that allow guests to customize their own products and a “Vandal Kit” that allows people to find their inner street artist by spray painting a textile with their favorite stencil. “There is nothing else like this exhibit,” Rahofer concluded. “It’s a truly unique experience that should leave you feeling inspired for the rest of your trip. You need to see it for yourself — it can’t be explained.” banksy.vegas Banksy’s “Heavy Weaponry”

The Las Vegas Strip may be known for its extravagant productions and exquisite restaurants, but that doesn’t mean visitors have to spend a lot of money to have a great time. In fact, some of the Strip’s coolest attractions don’t cost a cent to experience! NEW YEAR, NEW RESIDENCIES

FO R E I G N E R J O I N S L A S V E G A S ’ S TA R - S T U D D E D MUSIC HEADLINER SCENE By Heather Turk

Music fans will discover several new residencies are coming to Las Vegas in January. Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth will kick off his highly anticipated residency at the House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay (houseofblues.com/davidleeroth), country superstar Keith Urban will begin a 12-show residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (ticketmaster.com/keithurbanvegas) and one of the greatest rock ’n’ roll bands of all time, Foreigner, will launch a 10-show residency at The Venetian.

Best-known for such hit songs as “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want to Know What Love Is” and — Jones’ personal favorite — “Feels Like the First Time,” Foreigner has sold more than 80 million albums since their debut album was released in 1977. Following a 2002 hiatus, Jones reformed the chart-topping band, which is now comprised of Jones, lead vocalist Kelly Hansen, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel, bassist Jeff Pilson, keyboardist Michael Bluestein, guitarist Bruce Watson and drummer Chris Frazier.

“There’s been this trend to do [a Las Vegas residency], so it’s been on my radar,” said Foreigner guitarist and founder Mick Jones. “When we were approached to do one, I thought it sounded like fun. Even though we’re not performing in the same venue, I immediately thought of Elvis Presley and wanted to buy an Elvis-type suit to wear during the shows.”

“I set the bar pretty high right from the beginning,” Jones stated when asked about the new lineup. “I knew I wanted to have players that I wanted to be in the band because chemistry is important, but finding Kelly Hansen was a big part of reforming the group. I had to find a vocalist who could get inside the songs and really interpret what was written while still making them his own.” Jones knew the new lineup wouldn’t be easily accepted by audiences at first but was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly everything went.

Foreigner will rock The Venetian for 10 dates in 2020

“The band has really established themselves,” he said. “With the Las Vegas show, we’ll step up the presentation a bit and do a few different numbers we don’t do regularly on the road, but seeing this band live is really the exciting part. They let the music do the talking.” d e s t i n at i o n ▪ l a s v e g a s

AND THE BEAT GOES ON ‘CLASSIC CHER’ CELEBRATES THREE YEARS IN LAS VEGAS While Las Vegas may be welcoming many exciting new music residencies in early 2020, the city will also be hosting a pop culture icon as Cher celebrates the third anniversary of her extended engagement, “Classic Cher,” at Park MGM. While Jones has been performing with the current Foreigner lineup for more than a decade, he recently reunited with the original members of the band for four “Double Vision: Then and Now” concert dates that featured members of the group both past and present. When asked if audiences could expect any surprise appearances from original members Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, Ian McDonald or Rick Wills during Foreigner’s Las Vegas run, Jones simply replied, “You never know.”

Photos of Foreigner by Bill Bernstein; Cher by Andrew Macpherson

“A lot of them know we’re doing this, and I’ve gotten some calls,” he said. “Las Vegas is so close to L.A., I’m sure some friends and familiar faces may stop by.” Even though Foreigner will always celebrate its roots, the group’s current lineup is looking forward to the future. Jones said the band is “due for something new” music-wise and has been looking through some old material that never saw the light of day. “We have some pretty powerful songs in the vault,” he stated.

Performing inside Park Theater Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 through 29 at 8 p.m., “Classic Cher” is one of the Strip’s hottest tickets. Not only does the 90-minute show feature many of Cher’s beloved singles, but it also features some of the jaw-dropping costumes Cher’s become known for over the years. Audiences will see 11 breathtaking Bob Mackie designs in total, including a variation of the controversial ensemble from Cher’s 1989 “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video. In addition to performing “If I Could Turn Back Time,” Cher sings such hit songs as “Believe” and “I Got You Babe” during the show, plus some of her recent ABBA covers like “Waterloo” and “SOS.” With the farthest seat at Park Theater only being 145 feet from the stage, it’s not often fans get to see such an iconic performer in such an intimate setting. parktheaterlv.com

For now, though, the band is just looking forward to continuing to perform live in the new year. “I’m confident saying that this will be the best thing audiences will see in a while,” Jones said about the Las Vegas residency. “People will be rockin’ on their way out.” Foreigner performs Jan. 24, 25, 29 and 31 and Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. inside The Venetian Theatre before returning in April. Tickets start at $49.95, plus applicable fees. venetian.com/entertainment/ foreigner.html D e s t i n at i o n ▪ l a s v e g a s

Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club opened at The LINQ Promenade last May and has quickly become one of Las Vegas’ premier comedy venues. Curated and designed by the Emmy Award winner (and Damon’s fake late-night TV nemesis), the sophisticated club has already welcomed such huge names as Harland Williams and Nikki Glaser to its stage.

Those visiting during the months of January and February will find several hilarious headliners scheduled to perform, including Rich Vos Jan. 9-12, Steve Treviño Jan. 16-19 and Dan Cummins Jan. 30-Feb. 2. Performances run every Thursday and Sunday at 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 8 and 10 p.m. Additionally, audiences can enjoy a variety of limited comedy engagements select nights at 10 p.m., including performances by Luenell on Jan. 5 and Ian Bagg on Jan. 2, 16 and Feb. 6 and 20. Titled “Jill Kimmel Live,” the 80-minute show returns Jan. 9, 30 and Feb. 13 and 27. Regardless of who ticket holders see perform, they’re in for a night of side splitting laughs. kimmelscomedyclub.com

Boasting an expandable showroom that seats up to 300 people, the dual-level, 8,000-squarefoot club invites guests to arrive early so that they have time to look at photos and memorabilia from Kimmel’s career in its downstairs lounge. Among the items on display are a neon sign from “The Man Show” and actual “Crank Yankers” puppets. Several personal photos from Kimmel’s childhood are featured, as well, showing the TV host growing up in Las Vegas. Audiences can also enjoy a menu of flavorful fare and cocktails in the downstairs lounge or upstairs showroom before, after or during a performance. Mouthwatering food selections include the Hawaiian-roll Beef Sliders topped with ketchup, American cheese, bacon, onion straws and tomato; the Hawaiian-roll Smoked Pork Sliders topped with BBQ sauce and Cajun coleslaw; and the Margherita Pizza made with San Marzano tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella. Golden Gate Hotel & Casino may have completed a major expansion in September 2017 that included, among other things, a lavish new entryway and an expanded casino floor, but that doesn’t mean Las Vegas’ original hotel has forgotten its roots. Having opened in 1906 as Hotel Nevada, the historic downtown property has celebrated many firsts over the years, including being Las Vegas’ first casino and having the city’s first telephone number (1) and address (1 Fremont St.). Once a popular hangout for Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin, the hotel has not only preserved the bar The Rat Pack members used to drink at, Bar Prohibition!, so visitors can sip a vintage libation during their stay, but also 10 of its original rooms that used to welcome ranchers, railroad men, singers, mobsters and vacationers. Although the stylish rooms feature modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, guests will notice classic details like shorter doors and

more intimate bathrooms that will have them feeling like they’ve stepped back in time. While visitors can book The Original 10 rooms individually, for those who truly want a vintage Vegas experience during their stay, an Original Upgrade is available for just $25 that includes a specially designed Original 10 notepad and postcard plus two tickets to The Mob Museum. Celebrating its eighth anniversary on Feb. 14, the acclaimed attraction takes guests on an interactive journey that details everything from the birth of the Mob to today’s Mob-related headlines. Visitors will see hundreds of artifacts on display, including one of the Mob’s most iconic artifacts: the brick wall from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Like Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, The Mob Museum also recently underwent a major renovation that included adding a basementlevel Prohibition history exhibit with a working distillery and speakeasy. Called The Underground, the 1920s exhibit lets adults savor a selection of Prohibition-era cocktails made from the museum’s own moonshine or vodka or the museum’s house-brewed beer on tap while listening to live jazz music on select nights. Three interactive experiences were added to the first floor of the museum as well, including a Crime Lab that offers guests a hands-on exploration of real-life forensics techniques. Since Golden Gate Hotel & Casino only has 10 original rooms available, history buffs are encouraged to book the Original Upgrade as soon as possible to get the most out of their Vegas visit. goldengatecasino.com c a s i n os ▪ 4 1

One of the city’s coolest attractions, the Neon Museum was founded in 1996 as a way to collect, preserve, study and exhibit some of Las Vegas’ iconic signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment. Set on a 2.27-acre campus that includes the former La Concha Motel lobby as its visitors’ center, the museum’s outdoor exhibition space — the Neon Boneyard — boasts more than 200 classic signs that guests can see on a guided or self-guided walking tour. While most of the signs, like the Aladdin lamp, are unrestored, there are 19 working signs that stay illuminated during admission hours. These include several signs that in recent years were kept in storage, like Anderson Dairy’s “Andy” Anderson milkman sign, as well as the newly acquired Hard Rock Cafe guitar sign and the newly restored Ugly Duckling Car Sales sign.

Vegas’ historical neon heritage, the exhibition includes footage from “Beetlejuice” and “Mars Attacks!” that plays to The Killers’ “The Man” during “Brilliant!” as well as artwork on display throughout the campus. Highlights include the “Space-Suited Martians” and “Betelgeuse Sign” in the Neon Boneyard and the mesmerizing “Robot Boy and Slot Machine” installation inside the Dome in the Neon Boneyard. There are plenty of exciting things on the horizon for the Neon Museum in 2020, too, including an expansion that includes a 30-foothigh grid structure on the northern end of the Neon Boneyard and the addition of an indoor gallery at the former Reed Whipple Cultural Center. The future truly looks bright for one of Las Vegas’ most beloved attractions! neonmuseum.org

Guests will find additional signs on display in the Neon Museum’s North Gallery, which is home to the immersive audiovisual spectacle, “Brilliant!” The separately ticketed nighttime experience uses precise projection mapping to “re-electrify” 40 non-operational signs while music from artists like Frank Sinatra and Elton John plays in the background. As the Lady Luck sign “re-illuminates” to “Luck Be a Lady,” ticket holders will be in complete disbelief that its lights aren’t really operational! Those visiting the museum through Feb. 15 are in for a special treat, as it is currently hosting the limited-time exhibition, “Lost Vegas: Tim Burton @ The Neon Museum.” Featuring sculptural and digital installations that celebrate the acclaimed filmmaker’s link to Las D e s t i n at i o n ▪ d ow n tow n L a s V e g a s

Visitors to Mesa, Arizona, have always been able to count on warm sunny days and a vibrant community ready to welcome them with open arms. Now, families traveling with children, teens and young adults on the autism spectrum have a new slate of experiences designed exclusively for them.

Mesa was named the first-ever Autism Certified City designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), raising the profile of the sunbelt destination to millions of individuals with autism and millions of annual travelers impacted by the sensory disorder. The nearly year-long effort behind the autism designation was launched by Visit Mesa, the regional destination marketing organization for the city, which encouraged businesses to participate in specialized autism training geared toward executives and front-facing hospitality and service staff to better recognize Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and service the needs

of ASD travelers from the planning stages of a vacation to when they arrive in the destination, and throughout their stay. Mesa museums, including the Arizona Museum of Natural History, i.d.e.a. Museum and the Mesa Arts Center, are all operating as Certified Autism Centers, as well as several hotels, restaurants and attractions that earned this distinction. More than 500 Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities employees and 1,200-plus Mesa Police Department public safety and law enforcement officers along with the Mesa Fire Department will undergo autism certification training. To date, nearly 4,000 community members have completed or committed to the autism certification — and that number is growing! Mesa’s new Autism Travel Guide lists the Certified Autism Centers including attractions like Odysea Aquarium, Escape Rooms Mesa, Sloan Park – Chicago Cubs Spring Training, Arizona Goat Yoga and Riverbound Sports Paddle Co., to name a few. In addition, visitors can download the new GeoTour and plan for a fun and creative treasure hunt across the city. “Visit Mesa is a national change agent in the travel industry. We’ve always been entrepreneurial and innovative in the ways we respond to the needs of our regional visitors. Autism trainings and certifications are the latest example,” said Marc Garcia, President & CEO of Visit Mesa. “Our goal is to ensure individuals with autism and their families enjoy their perfect vacation in Mesa, Arizona. As a parent of a child diagnosed on the spectrum, this type of inclusivity reflects who we are in Mesa, and it’s the right thing to do.” AutismTravelAz.com r ec r e at i o n ▪ 5 1

The first attraction of its kind in North America, The San Francisco Dungeon brings to life the stories of the old Bay Area with a full theatrical cast, special effects, gripping storytelling, 360-degree sets, an underground boat ride and the city’s only underground drop ride. Covering half a city block, the immersive attraction opened at Fisherman’s Wharf in 2014 and is one of San Francisco’s most unique experiences. This isn’t some haunted house with zombie scare actors — this is a 60-minute storytelling experience that exposes some of San Francisco and the Barbary Coast’s weird, twisted and dark tales over the past 200 years. Upon descending into the depths of the dungeon in an old mine shaft elevator, guests will be greeted by Colonel Jack Gamble, who will prepare them for the murky journey ahead. They will then be transported back to the American frontier in 1848, where they will see what it’s like to be immersed into the clash between natives and new settlers during the Gold Rush. Then it’s off to 1849, where ticket holders will learn how hard it was to find any last scraps of the precious metal when they enter a maze of mines in search of gold. Visitors will then continue to move through different points in time where they’ll learn about everything from Chinatown’s gangs to the plague that quarantined the streets of Chinatown in the early 1900s. Along the way, guests will step inside a San Francisco courtroom to find out what crimes they’re guilty of committing, be sold off as sailors after a quick visit to Miss Piggott’s Saloon and come face to face with the ghosts of Alcatraz before trying to escape the D e s t i n at i o n ▪ N o rt h e r n c a l i fo r n i a

WINGZ KIDS SNACK PACKS b u y o n b oa r d

MEET OUR NEWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANT Five-Year-Old Make-A-Wish Kid, S.J. By Andrew Porrello

For his wish trip to Walt Disney World®, MakeA-Wish® kid Stephen “S.J.” Awwad, 5, had one tiny request: Could he also hand out snacks to his fellow passengers during the flight to Florida? Yes, he could, Allegiant representatives said. When S.J.’s flight departed Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids in October, bound for Orlando, that’s exactly what he did. In a grand send-off, with airport officials and Make-A-Wish Michigan representatives seeing him off, S.J. was named an honorary Allegiant flight attendant. A crew member presented S.J. with a kid-sized uniform, complete with orange tie, yellow shirt and blue sweater vest. He also received his very own customized wings pin with his nickname and the words “flight attendant” etched in the metal.

Excitedly following his new team members onto the plane, S.J. first stopped to visit the pilots in the flight deck and learn all about how they fly the plane. Next, it was time to welcome passengers on board. S.J. stood at the boarding door and shook the hand of every passenger, with a big smile and the greeting, “have a nice flight!” About 30 minutes into the flight, at cruising altitude, the captain gave flight attendants clearance to move about the cabin, and it was time for SJ’s dream to come true.

S.J.’s wish was to spend a week with his family at Disney World. Handing out snacks during the flight was a “wish enhancement,” just a little extra something that Allegiant was thrilled to be a part of,” said Hilarie Grey, the airline’s managing director of corporate communications, who oversees Allegiant’s corporate giving initiatives. Since 2012, Allegiant has partnered with MakeA-Wish, helping to fulfill the wishes of more than 1,800 children. We are currently a Wish Champion, recognized for making $1 million in annual contributions and the only domestic carrier to feature an aircraft with a Make-AWish themed livery. “Many of the kids we fly to their wish destinations are traveling to Florida,” Grey said. “but his is the first time a Wish kid has asked to serve snacks to passengers in flight. We found out from MakeA-Wish that S.J. loves anything to do with flying, so we not only wanted to say ‘yes,’ but aimed to make the experience extra special.” A special thank you to Disney for their donation of theme park tickets and other perks for each of the wish families, including SJ and his family, as part of their 39-year relationship with MakeA-Wish.

He met the rest of his flight crew at the front of the plane and began his march down the aisle handing (sometimes tossing) out pretzels to all passengers – many of them stating that he was the best flight attendant they had ever met. “This whole experience has just been a beautiful distraction from our reality, because its distracted us and given us the opportunity to think about fun things, and exciting things instead of appointments,” stated wish mom, Danielle.
