Las Vegas’ dining scene continues to thrive thanks to several recent restaurant additions that are making a name for themselves because of their flavorful fare and eyecatching desserts. FAVORITE BISTRO AT THE LINQ PROMENADE Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday, and brunch and dinner Friday through Sunday, this charming bistro serves French fare with an American twist in a sophisticated yet unpretentious setting. Guests can dine indoors or on the patio while feasting upon such delightful dishes as the exquisite Escargot de Bourgogne in an herb garlic butter (dinner only) and the mouthwatering Mussels marinière (available for lunch and dinner). When it’s time for dessert, cool off with the refreshing, teardrop-shaped Ice Sculpture filled with various fruits and sorbets in an exotic mint sauce. thefavoritebistro.com

GREENE ST. KITCHEN AT PALMS CASINO RESORT Offering a real feast for the senses, this vibrant restaurant is creating as much of a buzz for its art as its Asian-influenced shareable plates. Guests enter the restaurant through a secret vintage video arcade “speakeasy” and pass by several striking pieces — including an authentic Banksy street painting — before being seated. Just like how many of the curated art pieces burst with color, many of the restaurant’s dinner dishes explode with flavor, particularly the Wagyu Beef Tataki made with chili oil, ponzu sauce and crispy garlic and the Blistered Shishito Peppers topped with lime mayo and a barbeque crunch. For a dish that’s a work of art itself, end your meal with the ice cream “Space Invader,” which arrives to your table on an illuminated, steaming “spaceship.” palms.com/eat-and-drink/greene-st-kitchen MOTT 32 AT THE PALAZZO The first U.S. location of one of Hong Kong’s most lauded restaurants is equally worthy of all the critical acclaim. Serving authentic Chinese cuisine in an elegant setting, this fine-dining restaurant boasts an extensive dinner menu that includes everything from delicious dim sum like the sweet and savory Crispy Sugar Coated BBQ Iberico Pork Buns to its signature Apple Wood Roasted 42 Days Peking Duck. While the menu can be a bit overwhelming for first-time guests, diners can rest assured that every dish is truly a treat for taste buds. That being said, no visit is complete without ordering the Bamboo Green Forest (matcha sponge cake with yuzu cream, lime sorbet, crispy yogurt and white chocolate “bamboo”) for dessert. venetian. com/restaurants/mott-32.html dining ▪ 7

There’s no better time to savor some lipsmackin’ barbecue than during the summer. While Las Vegas may not be famous for its barbecue cuisine like Kansas City, St. Louis or Memphis, the city is home to several restaurants known for their tasty barbecue fare. MABEL’S BBQ INSIDE PALMS CASINO RESORT Foodies no longer have to travel to Ohio to treat their taste buds to some of Food Network Iron Chef Michael Symon’s beloved barbecue. Showcasing classic barbecue staples smoked over cherry wood, this Cleveland favorite serves a variety of antibiotic- and hormone-free meats for lunch and dinner, including a succulent Memphis dry rub Turkey Breast that will put mom’s Thanksgiving turkey to shame. Although diners aren’t in any danger of leaving their table hungry, especially considering several of the meats are served by the half pound, Sunseeker recommends starting the meal with the Pork Belly Tacos as an appetizer — they’re phenomenal! mabelsbbqlv.com SMOKED BURGERS & BBQ INSIDE THE FORUM SHOPS AT CAESARS PALACE Offering a menu of barbecue classics with a West Coast twist for lunch and dinner, this mouthwatering restaurant not only specializes in smoked meats — including a smoked burger — but also smoked cocktails. Guests can order dishes like the Chopped Beef Brisket or Salmon and enjoy their meal inside or out on the restaurant’s 1,500-square-foot patio. Whatever the entrée, no visit to the eatery is complete without ordering the World Famous Pig Candy for the table, smoked applewood bacon dusted with brown sugar, smoked paprika, Spanish paprika and cayenne pepper. hospitalityblvd. com/portfolio/smoked-burgers-and-bbq VIRGIL’S REAL BARBECUE AT THE LINQ PROMENADE This Southern-style smokehouse cooks all of its meats at a low temperature over a unique mix of hickory, oak and fruit woods for up to 10 hours, resulting in some of the best barbecue in town. While the lunch/dinner plates are pretty filling by themselves, be sure to start your meal with the scrumptious Cheese Boreg (fried dough filled with cheeses, green onion, parsley and spices) and save some room for the Ashta, a shredded filo dough with sweet cream and pistachios for dessert. bokbokchicken.com BROKEN YOLK CAFÉ A San Diego staple, this breakfast and brunch spot was one of the first restaurants to open at The Landing in April. The Waffle Sandwich filled with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and applewood-smoked bacon is especially delicious, as is the Monte Cristo: grilled ham and Swiss cheese sandwiched between two extra thick slices of French toast. Located on Las Vegas Boulevard approximately two miles from Mandalay Bay, Town Square Las Vegas is that rare destination frequented by locals and tourists alike. The shopping, dining and entertainment center is particularly popular with locals thanks to its delectable dining scene, which boasts such flavorful favorites as BRIO Tuscan Grille and Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar. Las Vegas’ newest smorgasbord is unlike any other in town. Part of the resort’s $192 million modernization, the new Feast Buffet inside Palace Station is redefining the all-you-can-eat experience in Las Vegas. Not only is the state-of-the-art buffet open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, daily for dinner and Sunday for brunch, but it also serves an assortment of breakfast and dinner favorites nightly from midnight until 8 a.m., making it the only late-night buffet in town. “No one else was doing an overnight buffet so we saw an opportunity,” said Keith Cawthern, Palace Station’s food and beverage director. “We didn’t know if it would work until we tried it, but so far we’ve been having great success.”

Guaranteeing something for every palate, the contemporary buffet also boasts a Healthy Favorite station featuring a variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free items for guests to 12 ▪ dining

Additionally, Palace Station’s Feast Buffet is the only buffet at a Station Casinos property that offers a selection of boba teas for guests to enjoy with their lunch or dinner. Diners can choose from a variety of aguas frescas during lunch and dinner as well, and guests age 21 and older receive complimentary mimosas and champagne during brunch. “We take pride in our value, quality and stellar service,” Cawthern said. “There’s truly something for everyone — not just meat lovers.” For more information, visit palacestation.sclv. com/dining/feast-buffet.

Located just off of the casino floor in Palace Station’s new expansion area, the all-new buffet is a drastic departure from the Feast Buffet that opened on the second floor of the property back in 1988. Not only is it easily accessible, but it also has a more modern look, seats more guests and offers a variety of delectable new dishes at seven themed stations. Menu highlights throughout the day include the shiitake scrambled eggs and breakfast pizzas available for breakfast, brunch and late-night dining; the build-your-own pasta station open for lunch and dinner, and the sushi, BBQ ribs and fresh-carved brisket served during dinner.

For those with a sweet tooth, the made-to-order donut ice cream sandwiches available during lunch and dinner are another big hit. Guests can make their own tasty treat from five different gelato flavors and several types of donuts.

Las Vegas isn’t the Entertainment Capital of the World merely because of the sheer number of productions it has — it’s the Entertainment Capital of the World because of how many mustsee shows are constantly playing. It doesn’t matter how many people you ask, almost everyone has a different show they would say no trip to the Strip is complete without watching. “THE BEATLES LOVE” BY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL AT THE MIRAGE Having just celebrated its 13th anniversary in June, this immersive production only continues to get better with age. Featuring breathtaking acrobatics, dynamic dance numbers and some of the most colorful costumes on the Strip, the production showcases some of The Beatles’ greatest hits as remixed by Giles Martin, son of The Beatles’ legendary producer, Sir George Martin. Even if you’ve seen the show since new acts, costumes, choreography and technology were added for its 10th anniversary, it’s such a visual feast that there’s always something new for audiences to love that previously went unnoticed! cirquedusoleil.com/beatles-love DONNY & MARIE AT FLAMINGO LAS VEGAS Time is running out to see one of the Strip’s most beloved productions, as America’s favorite brother-sister duo recently announced that they would be ending their Las Vegas residency in November. A show that’s not to be missed, the acclaimed production features Donny and Marie performing both together and separately, singing the songs that not only made them famous, like “Puppy Love” and “Paper Roses,” but also hits from other artists. While their signature brother-sister banter is as witty as ever, the show shines brightest whenever Donny and Marie show off their vocal versatility. Whether D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

Donny’s rocking out to “Crazy Horses” or Marie’s performing a show-stopping opera duet to “Duo Des Fleurs” with herself, it’s easy to see how these two turned a six-week engagement into an 11-year residency. caesars.com/flamingolas-vegas/shows/donny-and-marie “ZOMBIE BURLESQUE” INSIDE MIRACLE MILE SHOPS AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD RESORT & CASINO One of the Strip’s most entertaining productions, this hidden gem is far from being dead on arrival. Married comedy team Eric and Jayne Post may have created one of Las Vegas’ longest-running shows, the interactive murder-mystery dinner production “Marriage Can Be Murder,” but that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. “The show is called ‘Marriage Can Be Murder,’ not ‘Marriage is Murder,’” Jayne told Sunseeker with a laugh. “We will have been married for 30 years in October and we’ve definitely had our ups and downs, but we think marriage is worth fighting for. Laughter is just very important to us.” “I remember our daughter calling us one day at 7:30 a.m., and we were laughing when I answered the phone,” Eric added. “She asked me, ‘Do you guys wake up laughing?’ Most couples in show business fight for the microphone, but we share it. I used to always be the clown when I

performed, but when I met Jayne I realized I had to be the straight man because she’s funnier.” Starring as the show’s ditzy hostess, DD, and the overeager, short-short wearing police officer, Lt. Post, called to the scene after someone’s killed during dinner, Jayne and Eric opened “Marriage Can Be Murder” 20 years ago this past June at the former Showboat Hotel and Casino. It was then staged inside of a local restaurant, The Egg & I, for seven years before moving downtown to the D Las Vegas (formerly Fitzgeralds Hotel and Casino), where it’s been entertaining audiences for the past decade. Featuring actors in the audience posing as paying guests, the show seats ticket holders at custom-designed tables that are only 24 inches wide so guests interact with each other during their meal to try to decide who the murderer is among them. “Sometimes people ask if they can attend the show without ordering a meal, but we’ve discovered it’s easier for people to break down their barriers when they’re sitting closely together and eating,” Eric said. The show changes approximately every three months, hiring new actors to sit among the guests to keep things fresh. Every time new actors join the show, the story changes slightly, too, as the new cast members will rework plot points to fit their own backgrounds.

Jayne also prides the show on keeping the comedic moments relatively clean. “We’re not going to insult someone or pick on someone and be hurtful,” she said. “If I comment on someone looking like someone else, I’ll say something like, ‘Hey, Edna Mode (from ‘The Incredibles’) is here!’ We have good-natured fun with each other.” As far as the food goes, Eric, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Las Vegas, commented that it’s “improved tremendously” over the years, as expected since it now comes from the D Grill located next to the showroom. “It’s not a celebrity-chef meal, but it’s good comfort food like your mom would make,” Jayne said of the dishes, which change approximately every six months. Overall, guests are treated to one killer evening complete with plenty of laughs and a tasty three-course meal. “I hear people say every night that it’s the best show they’ve seen in Las Vegas,” Eric stated. “‘Marriage Can Be Murder’ isn’t just a show, though — it’s an experience where people leave feeling like they’ve made new friends.” “Marriage Can Be Murder” runs nightly at 6:30 p.m. inside the Showroom at the D. Be sure to get a souvenir shirt designed by acclaimed caricaturist Neal Portnoy to commemorate the show’s 20th anniversary, available for purchase or with VIP and R.I.P. tickets. marriagecanbemurder.com D e s t i n at i o n ▪ d ow n tow n L a s V e g a s

“Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel in Concert” will have audiences on their feet

A CONCERT EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER

GO ON A MUSICAL JOURNEY WITH ‘ ELVIS PRESLEY ’ S HEARTBREAK HOTEL IN CONCERT ’ By Heather Turk

The story behind “Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Concert” is almost as interesting as The King himself. The production, which tells the story of Presley’s meteoric rise to fame through nearly two dozen hit songs as well as never-before-seen photographs and videos, was originally part of a much longer script by Floyd Mutrux that became two separate musicals: “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Million Dollar Quartet.” After premiering in Ogunquit, Maine, in 2017 and playing in Chicago the following year, “Heartbreak Hotel” was adapted for the Las Vegas stage by Ivan Menchell and turned into a 90-minute concert experience.

Photos by Denise Truscello

“We stripped the show down to its bare story,” said Eddie Clendening, who has played Presley not only since “Heartbreak Hotel’s” premiere, but also originated the role of Presley in the Broadway production of “Million Dollar Quartet.” “This is the same story concept, but instead of playing Elvis proper, I’m Eddie onstage, which is freeing in a lot of ways. We (the cast) get to talk to the audience about Elvis’ story and why he was so important to us as musicians. There’s only one Elvis, and I feel the show is more impactful talking about why he’s so important versus me just pretending to be him.” Clendening praises the show for doing something that’s not being done by others, which includes the songs the six-piece band plays. Although the production features such timeless tracks as “It’s Now or Never,” sung by the cast in 23 languages to show Presley’s global appeal, D e s t i n at i o n ▪ L a s V e g a s

and a beautiful, more modern arrangement of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” sung by one of the show’s three female singers, Jackie Wiatrowski, Clendening noted that “there are some great Elvis songs not in the show.” While part of that is because Presley had so many hits, the numbers featured in the production were ultimately chosen because they helped best tell the story. This includes Clendening’s favorite number, “Baby Let’s Play House,” which was Presley’s mom’s favorite song. Clendening also loves how the show touches upon some of the “cutesy stuff” from Presley’s life, like how he took time out of his busy schedule to take his girlfriend to prom. “It shows the human side of an icon,” he said. “Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Concert” runs select nights at 8 p.m. inside Harrah’s Las Vegas with an additional 3 p.m. performance on Sundays (dark July 10 through 16). heartbreakhotelconcert.com

When Def Leppard returns to Las Vegas in August to perform their first-ever Strip residency, “Def Leppard Hits Vegas: The Sin City Residency” at Zappos Theater inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, they likely won’t be joined by the world’s greatest Def Leppard cover band, Ded Flatbird. Anyone who saw Def Leppard’s first Las Vegas residency, “Viva! Hysteria,” in 2013 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino might recall that the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band performed as their own opening act, Ded Flatbird, before returning to the stage to play their best-selling 1987 album Hysteria in its entirety. With “Def Leppard Hits Vegas: The Sin City Residency,” Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen said that the name of the show not only announces the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees’ return to the Entertainment Capital of the World, but also tells fans what to expect from the set list.

“Just like the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale, we know we can’t please everyone, but this will be a hits show,” he told Sunseeker just days before the band, which also includes Joe Elliott on vocals, Rick Savage on bass, Rick Allen on drums and Vivian Campbell on guitar, embarked on their summer European and Canadian tours. “There will be a few curveballs that we’ll change every night, but mainly, this show will feature our hits with a few deep cuts.” In addition to hearing such classic tracks as “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak,” “Rock of Ages,” “Photograph” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” fans will likely be treated to more of a theatrical experience, as Collen noted that it can be “a drag just watching a band stand there in their T-shirts performing.” “Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital, so we have to respect that spirit,” Collen said. “What

was surprising to me with our first Las Vegas residency was that it felt more like a theatrical event. We came out as Ded Flatbird, played for 45 minutes, took a shower and then performed the Hysteria album. We’ve done everything from play in front of a million people to play in a cave in Morocco, but that just felt different to us. The presentation was something we had never done before. We want to do something different that feels more theatrical again so it’s not just us playing a concert in Las Vegas.” Whatever the band comes up with, Collen promised fans that the “best live rock band in the world” will continue to raise their game with the 12-show residency. “We’ve never split up,” Collen noted. “Even when things weren’t looking good, we believed in ourselves and still did our thing. We kept pushing ourselves to become better. [These past few years] haven’t been a resurgence, they’ve been our trajectory. We have as much passion now, if not more, than we did coming out of the starting gate, and we try real hard to make each performance amazing. Whether we’re performing in a stadium, in an arena or at our own residency, we want our shows to have the same effect on audiences. We want them to be magical, and I love the fact that all these years later — in the Indian summer of our career — we’re still out there performing because that’s all I have ever wanted to do.” “Def Leppard Hits Vegas: The Sin City Residency” runs Aug. 14, 16, 17, 20, 23, 24, 29 and 31 as well as Sept. 1, 4, 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at just $69, plus taxes and fees, with VIP Meet & Greet add-on tickets also available. ticketmaster.com/defleppard

Moreno puts on one of Vegas’ most euphoric concert experiences

MARCHING TO HIS OWN BEAT FRANKIE MORENO DOES THINGS HIS WAY IN TWO ONGOING SHOWS IN LAS VEGAS By Heather Turk

Most acts dream of one day headlining a showroom in Las Vegas. But, Frankie Moreno has never been like most acts. The acclaimed singer-songwriter, piano prodigy and multi-instrumentalist can currently be seen performing at not one, but two Las Vegas venues: The Showroom at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa and Myron’s Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center. While that’s impressive, Moreno, who made history in April by having four albums reach the Top 10 on the Billboard charts in less than a year, has made a career out of doing things his way. “I’ve always been a hard pitch,” Moreno told Sunseeker. “I play the piano like Mozart, I’m showy like Jerry Lee Lewis and I dress like Elvis Presley. I’ve always been a gamble in Las Vegas because I don’t have a lot of global hits people recognize. Maybe they heard one song of mine on TV (Moreno played his song ‘Tangerine Honey’ on ‘Dancing with the Stars’), but odds are usually low that people are familiar with my stuff. My show is unique because I’m showcasing new music.”

2 6 ▪ e n t e rta i n m e n t

Ultimately, the man who has been named Las Vegas Headliner of the Year four separate times just wants audiences to have a good time. “I don’t want people to leave saying, ‘That guy was great,’” he said. “I want them to leave saying, ‘God, I feel great.’” Frankie Moreno returns to South Point Hotel July 18 and Aug. 15 and 29, and The Smith Center July 23 and Aug. 6 and 20. Shows start at 8 p.m. frankiemoreno.com

Regardless of whether ticket holders are checking out Moreno’s flashier show at South Point Hotel, complete with video screens, confetti cannons and dancing by “Dancing with the Stars” pro Lacey Schwimmer, or his more intimate, artsy show at The Smith Center, chances are they’re going to leave as fans. Moreno and his 10-piece band are known for putting on one of Las Vegas’ best concert experiences, as they tailor each performance to the audience.

“We never do the same show twice,” Moreno said. “I always play ‘Tangerine Honey’ and “Eleanor Rigby’ (Moreno’s No. 1 hit with violinist Joshua Bell) because people would be mad if I took them out, but everything else we alter. There’s no script we follow, I just always play a song from each of my Top 10 albums because I never know which albums people have bought.”

Despite being known as a Disneyland for adults, Las Vegas is actually a great place to spend summer vacation with the kids. Not only are there plenty of family-friendly attractions in town, but there are also several shows sure to entertain audience members young and old.

“THE MAGIC OF JEN KRAMER” AT WESTGATE LAS VEGAS RESORT & CASINO Showcasing the head-scratching talents of Las Vegas’ only female headlining magician, this charming production just celebrated its first anniversary in May. Audiences of all ages will be amazed by the “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Masters of Illusion” star, who performs an assortment of impressive illusions with a feminine twist. Whether she’s making a signed $100 bill magically appear inside a tube of lipstick or predicting what ticket holders will say when asked to help create a Facebook page for someone in the audience, Kramer puts on a show that’s unlike any other in town. westgatelasvegas.com

Whether audiences are gasping for air during the breathtaking aerial numbers or holding their breath during “America’s Got Talent” quarterfinalist Silvia Silvia’s death-defying crossbow archery act, ticket holders’ hearts will be racing numerous times during the production. The immersive show also features dazzling 3D multimedia projections that surround guests 180 degrees, further adding to the eye-popping experience. caesars.com/rio-las-vegas/shows/wow

“V – THE ULTIMATE VARIETY SHOW” INSIDE MIRACLE MILE SHOPS AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD RESORT & CASINO Variety is the spice of life, and the key to this longrunning show’s success, as audiences never know which rotating cast members will grace the stage each night. Many of the show’s crowdpleasing performers have actually been featured in some of the Strip’s most beloved productions over the years, including “Jubilee!” and “Crazy Horse Paris.” Standout performances include the jaw-dropping roller-skating duo The Skating Aratas, the unique physical comedy act The Quiddlers and the show’s energetic host, comedy juggler Wally Eastwood. AN ENTERTAINING EXHIBITION EXPLORE THE WORLD OF PANEM AT ‘ THE HUNGER GAMES: THE EXHIBITION ’ By Heather Turk

The fictional nation of Panem comes to the Las Vegas Strip with “The Hunger Games: The Exhibition,” now open at its permanent home inside MGM Grand.

Photos courtesy of “The Hunger Games: The Exhibition”

The newly reimagined exhibition not only features authentic props and detailed set recreations from Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise, which grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, but also hands-on interactive experiences that invite visitors to engage with behind-the-scenes content and explore the technology that brought the beloved books by Suzanne Collins to life. Guests can learn stuntman choreography, create their own propaganda commercial to recruit others to join the rebellion and even hear how the filmmakers developed the genetically modified animals created by the Capitol, like the tracker jackers. There’s also a motion-sensor trivia game that tests guests’ knowledge of the films during five multiple-choice rounds, asking such challenging questions as “What district provides power reserves for the Capitol?”

In addition to interactive experiences that are both interesting and entertaining, the exhibition boasts dozens of Instagrammable moments fans are sure to love. Not only will visitors get to walk past President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) office and step aboard the Tribute Train, but they’ll also see nearly 30 original costumes worn by the cast, including pieces from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” that weren’t on display during the exhibition’s previous tour stops. Among the costumes featured are Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) Girl on Fire dress, Mockingjay dress and wedding dress. Effie Trinket’s (Elizabeth Banks) reaping costume is on display, too, and naturally, visitors will get to see Katniss’ Mockingjay pin up close. Arguably the highlight of the exhibition, however, is its finale: an all-new, fully immersive archery training experience set within a 60-foot wide interactive digital training lab. Guests will receive their own bow and arrows and, after a quick training session where they’ll learn how to load and shoot the plastic arrows, shoot at digital targets on a giant projection screen in front of them. Visitors will get to play three timed rounds and be judged on the accuracy of their shots to see if they’re worthy of fighting by Katniss’ side. The experience is so fun, guests will want to return to do it again! “The Hunger Games: The Exhibition” is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the last admission at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $35 ($25 for children ages 4 through 11) plus fees and include a commemorative ticket. thehungergamesexhibition.com At t r ac t i o n s ▪ 3 1

Calling all burger lovers! Downtown Las Vegas is serving bliss on a bun with delicious hamburgers featuring artisanal ingredients. CARSON KITCHEN Head to this stylish urban eatery at 124 S. 6th St. in the former John E. Carson Hotel for the Butter Burger. One of late chef Kerry Simon’s playful interpretations on American comfort food, the juicy hamburger comes topped with Boursin, cheddar, lettuce and tomato, and is complemented by tater tots, which aren’t just for kids. carsonkitchen.com PIZZA ROCK A truly amazing hamburger isn’t what you’d expect to find at a revered pizzeria, but that’s what the Burrata Burger is! Made with a half pound of certified Angus beef and served on a fresh homemade roll, it not only boasts Burrata cheese, but also crispy bacon, caramelized onions, arugula and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. The burger even comes accompanied by rosemary and sea salt garlic fries. pizzarock.com THE SMASHED PIG This British-rooted spot with a haute pub vibe at 509 Fremont St. uses unusual ingredients to give the classic American hamburger a twist. Try the Pub Burger, which combines loads of interesting flavors. Served on a pretzel bun, it’s made with a traditional beef patty and white cheddar. With toppings that include a potato haystack and homemade sauce as well as the popular European addition of a fried egg, this is a strong contender for one of the most unabashedly yummy creations around. thesmashedpig.com D e s t i n at i o n ▪ D ow n tow n L a s V e g a s

This Wagyu beef burger is dressed with brie, Boston bib lettuce, roasted tomato and a scrumptious scallion mayo. Also sinfully delicious is the Gluttonous. Its Angus beef patty is topped with gloriously melted white cheddar, fried macaroni, pulled pork, bacon, fried onion strings and smoked jalapeño aioli, all on a toasted brioche bun. Even though Mesa is in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, visitors can take advantage of the city’s proximity to a water recreation paradise. A linked collection of four lakes and two rivers allows for every water sport imaginable, from jet ski fun and water skiing to hitting the river in a kayak or on top of a paddle board. Visitors that want to soak in the sun and be lazy will want to experience the ever-popular activity of tubing. Known as an ‘Arizona floating picnic’ by the locals, this leisurely float along the cool waters of the Salt River on an inner tube is a great option for families and friends that want to share in the desert water experience together. Tubing down the Salt River is available through Salt River Recreation, which operates rentals and transportation every weekend through Labor Day. Watch for themed weekend events all summer long, including pirate parties, superhero hangouts and even a Hawaiian-inspired luau on the water. Mesa’s lakes are a great place to hit the lakeshore sandy beaches and plan for a full day of water fun. On the banks of Saguaro Lake, early birds

may even get the chance to see the admired wild horses that frequent the area. Their enigmatic presence is a common sight when visitors are wading in the water, as the horses emerge from the surrounding desert forest to cool off and graze on the underwater foliage. The wild horses are watched over by the tireless efforts of the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, a non-profit dedicated to the freedom of the wild horses, which has allowed them to live and wander peacefully over the years. Those who are lucky enough to spot a horse or herd when they visit Mesa should remember to be respectful of their space and natural habitat. Before they go, visitors are advised to pick up a Tonto Day Pass before hitting the water. As the fifth largest forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest is one of the most-visited “urban” forests in the country. The Tonto National Forest Service oversees all the Mesa-area lakes and both the lower Salt and Verde rivers as well as many streams in the area. The 24-hour recreation passes are available at 200 locations in the Mesa area, including nearby convenience stores and select kiosks at each site. visitmesa.com

When Frank Lloyd Wright wasn’t at Taliesin, his Wisconsin home, studio and school of architecture, he was wintering at Taliesin West, its Arizona counterpart. As a result, Wright made a lasting architectural impact in the Phoenix area, and local tours are inviting visitors to some of his most influential works.

Photo of Taliesin West by Andrew Pielage; Aztec Room by Teresa Bitler

TALIESIN WEST The architect’s winter home offers several tour options, including the Behind the Scenes Tour and Night Lights Tour, but by far, the most popular is the Insights Tour ($30). Highlights include visiting Wright’s private quarters, his drafting studio and the Music Pavilion, where his architectural students performed in the evenings. On the 90-minute tour, guides encourage you to take photos, sit in the furniture and even play the piano. Need a little more time to immerse yourself in Wright’s genius? The Details Tour stretches the Insights Tour to two hours, allowing for a few more photo ops. franklloydwright.org/taliesin-west ARIZONA BILTMORE Wright served as a consultant on the Arizona Biltmore, and his influence is evident throughout the historic property. To truly appreciate his contribution, take the resort’s 90-minute History Tour, offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10 a.m. The tours are complimentary for resort guests; $10 for non-guests. Or, book the extremely popular Happy Hour History Tour ($25). The 45-minute, Friday night tour begins with sparkling wine and ends with a Tequila Sunrise cocktail, which was invented onsite. The sixhour tour begins with an overview of the Hotel Valley Ho. Although not designed by Wright, the hotel incorporates Wright-esque elements and has a fascinating history. Other sites on the tour include a mid-century modern townhome, the Triangle Building by prolific Valley architect Ralph Haver and the dendriform-column bank by Frank Henry, but the highlight for Wright fans is the Price House. A hidden gem, it features the home’s original furniture, a unique-for-Wright turquoise interior and incredible views. The Insider Mid-Century Tour is offered by advance appointment only. Not only does the park include wide open spaces filled with wildlife and natural beauty, it’s also home to botanic gardens, a merry-go-round, a steam train and Lake Anza, where visitors can swim, fish, picnic or relax. The nearby Tilden Nature Area has over 10 miles of hiking trails in addition to the 39 miles of trails available in the main park. There aren’t too many cities in the world, let alone the country, where almost every type of outdoor activity, food and entertainment are within driving distance and where the landscape is as diverse as its people. From picturesque beaches on one side, to the high desert on the other and mountain peaks over 10,000 feet high somewhere in the middle, LA is truly unlike any other city. All that without mentioning the cinema, cultural and entertainment spectacles that LA is known for. Depending on what type of experience you crave, there's a Hyatt Regency resort offering an experience as unique as the city itself. Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa Surfs up! The Spanish-styled resort has a pedestrian bridge over Pacific Coast Highway to one of the most renowned beaches in all of Southern California. Take a surf lesson, rent a beach cruiser or lounge under the sun. On site, you’ll find ocean views from select rooms, five dining options and three pool areas with cabanas. The resort is also within walking distance to Pacific City, an outdoor mall with shopping, dining and entertainment for the whole family. In the evening, enjoy a beach bonfire at one of their fire pits and watch the sunset. Packages include beach chairs, blankets, hot chocolate and s’mores. Hyatt Regency Long Beach There was a time when you visited Long Beach to only board a cruise ship in San Pedro or take a tour of the Queen Mary. A lot has changed over the past few decades. Today, it’s home to hundreds of kitschy, retro shops and top restaurants. The resort is the only 4 Diamond

Award-winning hotel in Long Beach and within walking distance to the beach and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Hyatt Regency Orange County The OC means different things to different people, but Disneyland is still at the top of the list for most. The resort, as a Disneyland Resort Good Neighbor Hotel, is the perfect family hideaway when visiting the iconic Anaheim theme park. In the lobby, you’ll find a Disney Desk staffed by a Disney cast member, offering admission tickets and arrangements to take the hotel’s park shuttle. Select suites come with bunk beds for the kids, and if they’re not worn out by the time they get back to the hotel, they can head to the Recreational Deck for bocce ball, shuffle board, basketball, oversized checkers and bean bag toss.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG AVIATORS By Andrew Porrello

Aviation is facing a pilot and maintenance technician shortage over the next 20 years. As many in the industry’s workforce reach mandatory retirement age and more aircraft take to the skies, there will be a demand for more than 200,000 pilots and 189,000 maintenance technicians in North America alone.

parts to ensure that students interested in an aircraft maintenance career have the opportunity to learn and practice their skills in an immersive, hands-on environment. And we also funded two Allegiant Careers in Aviation scholarships that were awarded to graduating seniors pursuing an education in aeronautical sciences.

That’s why Allegiant has actively embarked on initiatives to create pilot pipelines, establish mentorship programs and offer scholarships to the next generation of aviation professionals around the country. We also support programs and activities that encourage youth to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Allegiant’s pipeline program grants prospective pilots the chance to train at a smaller carrier while also being mentored by some of our top pilots. These student pilots have exclusive access to our training courses and, many times, can experience valuable training time in our state-of-the-art Airbus simulators. Our goal in promoting STEM education across the country is to ensure that today’s youth are inspired to pursue a career in the aeronautical sciences. We have also established scholarship funds in Fargo, N.D., and sponsored elementary and middle school robotics teams so they could compete in the world championships in Louisville, Ky.

Do you know of an aviation program in your community that could benefit from Allegiant’s support? If so, reach out to us at corporate. giving@allegiantair.com.

In Allegiant’s hometown of Las Vegas, we partner with Rancho High School’s aviation magnet program in an effort to help students continue their aviation studies after graduation, whether they want to be pilots or work in maintenance. To inspire students, Allegiant hosted an “Aviation Day” at the high school where regional chief pilots, maintenance technicians and experts in other airline careers met with students to answer questions about aviation careers. We also donated over $400,000 worth of aircraft

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST

Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following:

• Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS

Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.

Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.

SMOKING

CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS

Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling

“THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer.

Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
