A LAS VEGAS RESIDENCY UNLIKE ANY OTHER

Whether you’re in town for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo or you just love a good concert, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” should be on every Vegas visitor’s must-see list this December. The resident production inside The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is one of the Strip’s best shows, featuring more than 30 of Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn’s greatest hits. The three longtime friends’ natural chemistry together only makes the production even more enjoyable, whether they’re singing each other’s songs or playfully poking fun at one another. When it’s time for the show’s patriotic finale, chances are everyone in the audience will already be on their feet! For tickets, visit thecolosseum.com.

THE WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO RETURNS By H. Wadowski

L

as Vegas hosts many special events throughout the year, but few of those events transform the look and feel of the Entertainment Capital of the World quite like the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).

resorts all over town host viewing parties for fans who weren’t able to score tickets to each day’s events. This year, more than 35 properties are expected to pick up the closed-circuit live feed of all 10 performances of the WNFR.

Returning to Thomas & Mack Center Dec. 6 through 15, the world’s richest and most prestigious rodeo—now in its 60th year—features the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding competing for their share of $10 million in prize money. That prize money has grown each year Las Vegas has hosted the rodeo, with the purse being just a little more than $1.8 million when the city first welcomed it to town in 1985.

While the individual sporting events are obviously the focal point of the rodeo, with start times beginning nightly at 6:45 p.m., there are several other special events going on for rodeo fans to enjoy before and after each evening’s actionpacked competitions. Not only do several hotels feature some of the brightest stars in country music performing in their showrooms and theaters, like Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino welcoming Florida Georgia Line for a five-night residency inside Zappos Theater Dec. 1, 5, 7, 8 and 11 at 8 p.m. (floridageorgialine.com), but there are also several official WNFR events going on rodeo fans won’t want to miss.

Currently contracted to host the rodeo through 2024, Las Vegas welcomes thousands of rodeo enthusiasts each year, decked out in Wrangler jeans and shirts, Justin Boots and cowboy hats for the eagerly anticipated event. Last year’s event had a total attendance of 168,952 people over the 10 days of competition. Since the rodeo has sold out more than 300 consecutive performances, it’s not surprising that several

One of the rodeo’s most popular annual events is its Cowboy Christmas gift show. Taking place Dec. 6 through 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Halls, the free event features nearly 350 exhibitors from across the United States showcasing their unique products. Shoppers will find everything from Western wear and custom-made jewelry to furniture and original art, making the event the perfect stop for last-minute holiday gifts. Additionally, guests can enjoy a number of interactive experiences, live entertainment like the Junior NFR, autograph sessions with various celebrities and contestants, the Official Wrangler NFR Ticket Exchange and more. Complimentary shuttle service is even offered from the event directly to Thomas & Mack Center for each night’s rodeo performance. Rodeo fans can also enjoy a variety of events all over town before each night’s competitions as part of the Wrangler NFR 9 to 5 lineup. In fact, the rodeo-themed events actually start

a few days early with the official Miss Rodeo America contestant introductions on Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. inside Tropicana Las Vegas. Rodeo fans will then find a wide variety of events to choose from Dec. 3 through 16, including the free ALL IN Barrel Race Dec. 6 through 16 at Orleans Arena (orleansarena.com), the Roper Cowboy Marketplace gift show presented by Boot Barn Dec. 6 through 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside Mandalay Bay (cowboymarketplace.vegas) and a free tie-down ropers WNFR autograph session on Dec. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. in MGM Grand’s main lobby (mgmgrand.com/nfr). For those who think the fun stops once the rodeo’s competitions conclude each night at Thomas & Mack Center, think again. The party is actually only getting started thanks to several Wrangler NFR After Dark events happening all over town. In addition to recurring nightly events like The Mirage’s Rodeo Vegas 2018, the official WNFR after party of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) featuring nightly free concerts inside The Mirage Race & Sports Book Dec. 6 through 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. (mirage. com/nfr), there are several single-night events happening. Late-night highlights include the “National Finals Tonight” show hosted by Don Gay, Joe Beaver and Dan Miller inside The Orleans Hotel & Casino’s Honky Tonk Saloon Dec. 6 through 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. (boydevents.com/wnfr) and the live entertainment at MGM Grand’s Gold Buckle Zone Dec. 6 through 15 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., including free concert performances by Double Wide and Dee Jay Silver. Of course, this is just a sampling of the many exciting events Las Vegas has in store for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo crowd. McEntire said her joint residency at The Colosseum has a “lot of patriotism”

A WINNING COMBO

REBA, BROOKS & DUNN RETURN JUST IN TIME FOR THE WNFR By H. Wadowski

S

ince its premiere in 2015, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” has become one of the Entertainment Capital of the World’s most sought-after tickets during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR).

The Las Vegas residency, which features country music superstars Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn singing both together and separately during the show, is one of the Strip’s most entertaining productions no matter the time of year it’s performing inside The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. However, even its stars admit the production is truly special whenever the rodeo is in town. “It’s a lot of fun to perform that week—the rodeo is our audience,” McEntire said. “We’re more relaxed and feel totally at home.” Having grown up barrel racing, McEntire might have one day competed in the WNFR had she followed a different career path. Instead, the country music icon and her Colosseum co-stars have supported the rodeo over the years by singing the national

FEATURE STORY

anthem at the event and cheering on its competitors—particularly, in McEntire’s case, the barrel racers. While the December performances of “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” are always special because of the rodeo fans who fill the audience, the December dates are also unique since it’s so close to Christmas. Last year, McEntire and Brooks & Dunn added a Christmas song to the show’s set list, and McEntire—who will once again host ABC’s annual “CMA Country Christmas”—is hopeful the trio will perform it again this year. Given McEntire and Brooks & Dunn’s extensive catalogs of music, it should come as no surprise that adding a holiday song to “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” isn’t the only time the show’s set list changes. Although there are a few staples, audiences are pretty much guaranteed to hear during the two-hour production—like McEntire’s “Fancy” and Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”— the trio frequently changes out certain songs to keep things fresh for fans. “After 42 years, I’ve been very blessed to have a lot of No. 1 singles, so we are able to switch them up here and there,” McEntire, who recently began performing “Back to God” from her 2017 gospel CD, Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope, said. “There are tons of songs we haven’t even done yet!” Although ticket holders will no doubt enjoy whatever songs McEntire and Brooks & Dunn play during the show, a huge part of what makes “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” so unforgettable are the stories the three longtime friends share while onstage together. McEntire acknowledged that she, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn are all “very blunt and honest together,” which sometimes results

in some hilarious exchanges between the three of them onstage. Luckily, McEntire also noted that they’re all “business minded” and know how to keep their friendship, so if anything in the show isn’t working, they will talk it out. One of the more interesting stories McEntire shares during the show actually has nothing to do with Brooks & Dunn. Before singing “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” McEntire tells audiences the story of how no one wanted to record the song at first. Eventually its writer, Bobby Russell, had his wife Vicki Lawrence sing it, and it went on to become a No. 1 hit. When asked if McEntire ever regretted passing up the chance to record a song that went on to become a success, the singer humbly admitted that she once passed up recording what eventually became one of George Strait’s hits, “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind.”

McEntire backstage at “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas”

Of course, McEntire’s career has hardly suffered from that one minor mishap. In addition to starring in The Colosseum’s longest-running country music residency, the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors recipient has received multiple accolades over the years and holds the distinct honor of being the first female Colonel Sanders for KFC. “I was very flattered and eager to be involved, especially to see the reaction from my fans,” McEntire replied when asked about the advertising campaign. “I’d say a majority was pretty tickled!” She’s also starred on the hit TV series “Reba,” which she said she’d love to do a revival of if given the chance. As for what else she would like to do in the future, aside from working on another album, McEntire said she’d love to one day host her own travel and cooking show. In the meantime, she’s more than happy

Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn onstage

performing in Las Vegas where she can enjoy “tons of eating, shopping and going out to Red Rock Canyon to see the beautiful views” whenever she’s not onstage singing. “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” runs Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Dec. 5 through 15 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit thecolosseum.com. oasting more than 2,100 guestrooms and the finest equestrian facility in the country, it’s no wonder South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa is one of Las Vegas’ most popular resorts to stay and play at during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR). Rodeo fans can then return to the showroom each night from 11 p.m. to midnight for the Montana Silversmiths Go-Round Buckle Presentations, where the nightly go-round winner in each of the seven WNFR events will be presented with a prized buckle and review that night’s action. ans might soon be able to see Cher on her “Here We Go Again” North American tour, but there’s nothing like seeing the legendary performer live in Las Vegas. Performing at Park Theater inside Park MGM Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 2 through 17 at 8 p.m., Cher’s extended concert engagement, “Classic Cher,” has been one of the Strip’s hottest tickets since debuting in February 2017. Not only does the production feature many of her beloved singles, but it also features some of the jaw-dropping costumes Cher has become known for over the years. Audiences will see 11 breathtaking Bob Mackie designs in total, including a variation of the controversial ensemble worn in Cher’s 1989 “If I Could

Turn Back Time” music video, which the 72-year-old still looks phenomenal in today. Needless to say, Cher performs “If I Could Turn Back Time” during the show, as well as such other hits as “Strong Enough,” “I Found Someone” and “I Got You Babe.” Audiences might even hear a song or two from Cher’s latest CD, the ABBA tribute, Dancing Queen. Cher already surprised ticket holders earlier in the year by performing “Fernando” during the show, the ABBA song she sung in this summer’s hit movie, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” While odds are Cher will sing many of the same songs she performs during “Classic Cher” on tour, audiences are guaranteed a much more intimate concert experience at the 5,200-seat Park Theater. With the farthest seat only being 145 feet from the stage, there’s truly not a bad spot in the house. It’s not often fans can see such an iconic performer in such an intimate setting, which makes “Classic Cher” all the more unforgettable. Cher isn’t the only A-list music artist people can see perform at Park Theater, either. On Dec. 28, Lady Gaga kicks off her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency at the venue with “LADY GAGA ENIGMA,” an all-new concert experience showcasing her pop hits. Fans can expect to hear many of the catchy numbers that have helped Lady Gaga become a household name over the past decade, songs like “Bad Romance,” “Paparazzi” and “Poker Face.” “LADY GAGA ENIGMA” will run for

Lady Gaga will also launch a separate show in January 2019 as part of her residency, “LADY GAGA JAZZ & PIANO,” featuring stripped-down versions of her hits alongside music from the Great American Songbook. parktheaterlv.com The Las Vegas Strip also boasts several other venues that feature some of the biggest names in music performing extended concert engagements and exclusive residencies, like The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. In fact, Céline Dion will once again be performing her second residency at the venue Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 2 through 17 and Dec. 28, 29 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. Simply titled “Céline,” the elegant production features the celebrated “My Heart Will Go On” songstress performing a mix of her timeless hits as well as covers of other classic songs while backed by a full orchestra and band. Rod Stewart also returns to The Colosseum select dates Nov. 21 through Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. with his long-running residency, “Rod Stewart: The Hits.” Guests can expect to hear several of the rock and R&B favorites that have defined Stewart’s storied career, including “Maggie May” and “Forever Young.” thecolosseum.com Over at Zappos Theater inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, time is running out to see “Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life.” The hit residency, which will end in April 2019, returns Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nov. 2 through 17 at 9 p.m. Fans will hear all of their favorite Backstreet Boys numbers, including “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “I Want It That Way.” While Backstreet Boys’ residency at the venue may be ending, Gwen Stefani’s new residency, “Gwen Stefani – Just a Girl,” will make its eagerly anticipated return Dec. 27, 29, 30 and 31 at 9 p.m. The dazzling production features songs from both Stefani’s solo career as well as her time with No Doubt, including hits like “Don’t Speak”

and “Hollaback Girl.” caesars.com/planethollywood/shows/zappos-theater One of Las Vegas’ most acclaimed resident performers will also return in November. One of my favorite ways to relax is to catch a movie at Regal Red Rock Stadium 16 & IMAX inside Red Rock Resort. The theater is very comfortable, and I love to escape at the cinema. Before or after a movie, I like to eat at Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar at Red Rock Resort. They have a tasty menu and often have great live local music.

One of my favorite spots to grab a bite after my show is Naked Fish’s Sushi & Grill. They have a great late-night happy hour!

If you want to see the best comedy show in town, catch my friend Brad Garrett when he is performing at his namesake comedy club inside MGM Grand. One of the funniest and nicest fellas I know!

If you’re looking for something fun and different, check out my friend Carrot Top at Luxor. You are sure to laugh, and you won’t believe some of his hilarious props! Of course, I hope that you will join me, my swing band and the most glamorous showgirls in town—the Dirty Virgins—at Matt Goss at The Mirage inside 1 OAK Nightclub, where old school meets new cool!

HOLIDAY FUN IN SIN CITY FESTIVE ATTRACTIONS VEGAS VISITORS WON’T WANT TO MISS By H. Wadowski

as Vegas might not be the first place people think of to spend the holidays, but the popular desert destination is actually home to a lot of festive seasonal attractions. Whether you’re in the mood to look at some twinkling lights or you want to go ice skating, there are several fun ways Vegas visitors can revel in the spirit of the holiday season.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this Henderson attraction is a holiday favorite. Visitors can walk through Ethel M Factory’s four-acre botanical cactus garden from Nov. 6, 2018, through Jan. 6, 2019, and see more than half a million lights strung across more than 300 species of plants and cacti. Additionally, children can visit with Santa on select evenings. Admission is free (closed on Christmas), with donations accepted to various charities in exchange for tickets to the lighting ceremony on Nov. 6. ethelm.com

ICE RINK

Who says you can’t go ice skating in the desert? The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will bring back its popular Ice Rink for the seventh consecutive year starting on Nov. 19. Overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, the 4,200-square-foot rink is open to visitors of all ages, although guests younger than 18 years of age must sign a waiver and be accompanied by an adult. cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/ice-rink

GLITTERING LIGHTS

For those who would rather drive past some pretty lights, this holiday drive-thru spectacular at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway boasts more than 3 million LED lights throughout its 2.5-mile course. Open nightly from Nov. 9, 2018, through Jan. 6, 2019, it also features a Living Nativity at the end

Benefiting adults with intellectual disabilities, this Southern Nevada tradition returns to Opportunity Village for its 27th year Nov. 23 through Dec. 31 (closed on Christmas). Families can enjoy a variety of rides, including the Forest Express Passenger Train and Cheyenne’s Enchanted Carousel, a magical midway with carnival games, an all-new light show, photos with Santa and more. A JUMP FOR JOY SEE LAS VEGAS FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE WITH SKYDIVE LAS VEGAS By Connor McIlveen

L

as Vegas has always been a destination for thrill seekers, with roller coasters, high stakes gambling, sporting events and attractions and shows made to give adrenaline junkies their much needed boost. However, the greatest thrill Las Vegas offers will take guests away from the Strip and literally drop them up to 15,000 feet above Southern Nevada for an experience that cannot be matched by any casino on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Photos courtesy of Skydive Las Vegas

Skydive Las Vegas is the longest running skydiving center in Las Vegas, open since the early 1990s, and has been taking guests to new heights 365 days a year, seven days a week. As the highest jump in Nevada, Skydive Las Vegas offers unprecedented views of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Colorado River, Las Vegas Strip, Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon and the gorgeous surrounding landscapes of the Mojave, meaning there is no better way to get acquainted with all the natural splendor that Southern Nevada has to offer. Guests are shuttled for free directly from the Las Vegas Strip for a short 30 minute drive to Skydive Las Vegas, where they will be instructed on the safety guidelines for performing a tandem jump. Then, after suiting up in one of Skydive Las Vegas’ flight suits and goggles, it’s off into the air on the only airplane specifically designed for skydiving. Where highly trained and licensed professionals guide jumpers through every step of their first flight, using the most state of the art parachuting equipment to guarantee sceptical first-time skydivers the safest skydiving experience in Las Vegas. After falling for around 45 seconds at speeds of up to 120 mph, the parachutes are pulled, and guests aid their guide in steering to the safety of the landing pad. As one of the only skydiving centers with its own landing facility, Skydive Las Vegas allows friends

and family to watch as their braver compatriots are whisked into the air and are given front row seats to their inevitable descent. And, while the memory of falling out of a plane is unforgettable, they also offer media packages that capture every moment in stunning HD video and photography. Those photos may even inspire friends and family to try skydiving themselves, and with seating capacity of up to eight tandem divers on board their plane, it’s easy for Skydive Las Vegas to accommodate families, parties and large groups. “A MOB STORY”

SIEGEL’S 1941

In the mid ’40s, El Cortez was owned for a short time by a group of mobsters that included Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. As a tribute to its past, the resort opened the restaurant, Siegel’s 1941, which serves up several mob-themed burgers. The one to die for, of course, is the Bugsy Siegel Burger, topped with applewood bacon, grilled onions, cheddar cheese and tomato marmalade. It’s even better when paired with an old school cocktail like Virginia’s Margarita or The Bootlegger. elcortezhotelcasino.com/dining/ siegels-1941

Enjoy the history of the mob presented onstage through song and dance along with a scrumptious three-course dinner at the Plaza Hotel & Casino. Told by the last godfather, Michael Franzese, “A Mob Story” combines world-class performers with special effects to capture the saga of crime and betrayal in the desert. Purchase the dinner and show package and you’ll also get to indulge in the Godfather Prix Fixe meal at Oscar’s Steakhouse. Named for former mayor and mob attorney Oscar Goodman, this glamorous restaurant pays homage to the Vegas of yesteryear with a menu fit for a mobster—including items like Crazy Phil’s Onion Soup and the Spicy Flame Charred Spilotro Steak. plazahotelcasino.com/ entertainment/a-mob-story/

downtown treasure since 1941, El Cortez Hotel & Casino has undergone several exciting changes over the past year. While guests will still find some coin-operated slot machines on its casino floor and former owner Jackie Gaughan’s perfectly preserved 2,700-square-foot suite available for special occasions, the hotel has recently unveiled several delectable new dining options, a new spa and newly renovated guestrooms.

he word is getting out on one of Southern Nevada’s best-kept secrets. Located an easy, one-hour drive from the Las Vegas Strip, Pahrump Valley Winery is a true oasis in the Mojave Desert. Vino enthusiasts can spend an entire afternoon strolling its grounds, sampling some of its award-winning wines and dining at its casually elegant restaurant, Symphony’s. Although there’s no wrong way to experience the charming destination, by starting the day with a complimentary guided tour, visitors can truly appreciate everything Nevada’s largest producing winery has to offer.

Photos courtesy of Pahrump Valley Winery

Symphony’s Restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner date

Available daily at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., the tour not only covers the winery’s beautiful zinfandel and Syrah vineyards up close, but also goes behind the scenes of its recent $1.6 million winemaking and production facility expansion. As if seeing the many oak aging barrels and fermenting tanks wasn’t impressive enough, the tour also showcases the 485 national wine awards the winery has received since 2004, a year after its current owners—Bill and Gretchen Loken—took over operations. While some people may question grapes grown in the desert, 113 of those awards were for Nevada-grown wines! Guests can sample some of those award-winning wines in the tasting room located by the gift shop. Pahrump Valley Winery generously offers seven complimentary pours to guests ages 21 and older ($5 per person for groups of eight or more) so visitors can try several different vinos from its three wine labels: Pahrump Valley Winery, Charleston Peak and Nevada Ridge. While the sweet and fruity Symphony (which the winery’s restaurant was named after) has long been a guest favorite, be sure to try the new Huckleberry Delight wine and the chocolatecovered cherry-like Sweet Melody dessert wine. Both are sure to be future award winners! Once guests have a favorite vino picked out, they can enjoy a bottle of it inside Symphony’s Restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner, the exquisite eatery boasts breathtaking views of the winery’s grounds from its enclosed patio, where it’s not uncommon to see a hummingbird fly by. Must-try menu selections include the Imported Baked Brie, the tender Filet Mignon in a red wine demi-glace and the Incredible Lobster Bisque laced with the winery’s own Crème Sherry dessert wine.

EAT AND LEARN FOOD TOURS WITH GREAT RESTAURANTS AND LOCAL HISTORY By Teresa Bitler

F

ood tours are one of the best ways to explore a new city—or get to know a familiar one even better. Not only do visitors get to sample the city’s best restaurants, but tour guides point out landmarks and share local stories along the way.

ARIZONA FOOD TOURS

For a great introduction to the Valley’s dining scene, book “A Taste of Old Town Scottsdale – Lunch Tour,” the state’s first food tour. The three-hour outing stops at five restaurants, where you’ll sample Thai, barbecue, cocktails and more, depending on the route that day. Or, discover the culinary side of Tempe. The happy hour tour is the only food tour in Tempe and features sips and bites from a brewery, wine bar and Irish pub. Arizona Food Tours also has a Scottsdale happy hour tour and a Scottsdale dinner tour. arizonafoodtours.com

Its “Hop on Tour” visits three breweries and includes a meal. Along the way, you’ll enjoy behind-the-scenes tours, sip 15 samples and learn some local history. If you don’t have five hours for the original tour, opt for the “Short Hop Tour” instead. This three-hour tour limits itself to two breweries but also gives you a behind-the-scenes look at each, plenty of samples and light appetizers. You must be at least 21 to participate. azbrew.com

PHOENIX RISING TOURS

Coffee connoisseurs can indulge in a jolt of java and hear tales of the city on the “Downtown Phoenix Coffee Crawl Walking Tour” offered by Phoenix Rising Tours. The 1.2-mile tour is available by appointment for groups of six or more and requires two weeks advance notice. phxtours.com

Taste It Tours takes foodies to some of the best restaurants in Scottsdale, downtown Phoenix and Gilbert. If you want to explore Scottsdale, hop on the “Scottsdale Trolley Food Tour” for stops showcasing craft pizza, street tacos and other delectable dishes. The Phoenix lunch and dinner tours delve into city history between restaurants. Allegiant passengers won’t want to miss the downtown Gilbert tour, though. Close to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, this three-hour tour highlights six local favorites including Barrio Queen, The Clever Koi and Joe’s Real BBQ. tasteittours.com

TUMBLEWEED TREE

More than 8,000 hand-lit luminaria bags line the paths of the Desert Botanical Garden for Las Noches de Las Luminarias most evenings 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in December. (It’s open to the general public December 1-6, 10-23 and 26-31.) This year, the event celebrates its 40th season with Electric Desert, a light show set to a pulsing beat with the garden as its canvas.

The city illuminates the Tumbleweed Tree nightly December 1 through the end of the month. Come the first night for the free parade, lighting ceremony and festivities or subsequent nights to shop for gifts at local stores, enjoy dinner at favorite local restaurants or even lift a pint to toast the season at SanTan Brewing Company. chandleraz.gov

The season kicks off with Glendale Glitters Spectacular Weekend on November 23 and 24, followed by Glendale Glitters Holiday Weekend on December 14 and 15. Both celebrate with Santa, a children’s snowfield, make-take-crafts, holiday storytelling, seasonal gifts and food vendors. F

rom the excitement of seeing that new flick that everyone has been talking about to the smell of fresh-popped popcorn and a ready-to-open box of Milk duds calling your name, there’s something to be said about going to the movies. The Tamale Store has seating for 60-70 plus a small market with frozen tamales for sale

UNWRAPPED TAMALES IN PHOENIX By Teresa Bitler

T

amales are just as much a part of the holidays in the Southwest as decorated cookies. Place an order for these flavorful Mexican staples this season, or enjoy one year round, as Phoenix is known for this delectable fare.

THE TAMALE STORE

For variety, you can’t beat The Tamale Store, a family-run restaurant and market recognized as having the best tamales in Phoenix by multiple magazines and newspapers. What sets their lard-free tamales apart, according to owner Martha Castillo, is the right proportion: 60 percent tasty filling to 40 percent masa. Choose from tamale standards like Pork Red Chile or creative options like Green Chile Corn & Cream Cheese, Chicken Mole and Poblano Chiles & Monterey Jack Cheese. The Tamale Store even has vegan offerings like Cilantro Black Bean and Southwest Veggie. Tamales can be enjoyed at the new location’s casual restaurant or purchased, frozen, from the store off the dining area. Most varieties come in packs of two ($7). If you want some for the holidays, stock up early to ensure a supply of your favorites. thetamalestore.com

LA PURISIMA BAKERY

Don’t let the name fool you. La Purisima Bakery turns out a great tamale to go. Made fresh daily, the tamales come in three flavors—green, red and sweet—and are kept in warming trays behind the pastry-filled cases at the bakery’s Phoenix and Glendale locations. Purists will appreciate how much meat is in the red and green tamales, especially considering the reasonable price ($2 each). Save a few extra dollars to purchase hot-

of-the-griddle tortillas, soft Mexican sweet buns and fresh churros for later. During the holidays, expect long lines for both the tamales and baked goods.

OLD EL PASO TAMALES

This local favorite uses family recipes from the El Paso region to create authentic chicken, pork, corn, beef and green chile tamales. Chow down on one (the tamales are packed with generous fillings) or two for lunch amid bright murals in the dining room or purchase tamales to go. At holiday time, you can pre-order spinach and sweet tamales in addition to the traditional varieties, but put in your request early. THE BOYS OF FALL THE ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE FEELS A LOT LIKE SPRING TRAINING By Charlie Vascellaro

aseball fans familiar with the scenic splendor and relaxed casual atmosphere of Arizona’s Cactus league spring training circuit might find the postseason Arizona Fall League just as enticing. Just like the Cactus League, the Arizona Fall League provides baseball fans with an up close and personal look at the game’s future stars in ways that are inaccessible during the rest of the baseball season. The Arizona Fall League is Major League Baseball’s premier player development league, and though the 27th season began in early October, baseball fans can still catch games through mid-November.

Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and three on the west side in Peoria, Glendale and Surprise.

There’s nothing quite like basking in the afternoon sun at one of Arizona’s cozy state-ofthe-art ballpark facilities. Hardcore fans arrive early to watch batting practice and fielding drills, and to get a chance to talk directly with the ballplayers and ask for autographs as they arrive for the morning workouts.

The annual Fall Stars Game, the league’s premier showcase event featuring players who are sure to appear on big league rosters the following season, is scheduled for November 3, (5:08 p.m.) at Surprise Stadium. The AZ Fall League championship game pitting the first place teams of the East and West divisions is scheduled for November 17 (1:08) at Scottsdale Stadium.

The players wear the major league uniform of their organization topped with the unique regionally designed caps of their Fall League teams. It is considered an honor for a player to be assigned to the Arizona Fall League and an indication that a player is on a fast track to the major leagues. More than 60 percent of AZ Fall League alumni have advanced to the Major Leagues.

Similar in length to the spring training season, there are three games just about every day of the 30-game schedule for each team, with two starting at 12:35 p.m. and one at 6:35 p.m. every night. mlb.com/mlb/events/afl/index.jsp

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

Thank you for being Allegiant. I flew your airline for the first time in July, and I was pleasantly surprised. You’ve enabled me to increase my travel, which will in turn increase happiness in my life.

- Elizabeth W, Kentucky

I lost my garment bag in the check-in counter area before boarding the plane. The bag had a very expensive suit and my cocktail dress for a wedding. When I realized it was missing, your flight attendants jumped into action. They called and found it in TSA and arranged to have it delivered FedEx to a relative (since I was on vacation). Thank you. What a great airline and flying experience!!

- Dr. Peg E, Florida

I just want to tell you how much I enjoy traveling on Allegiant. The flight attendants are great. I can’t tell you how much the flight alone added to the enjoyment of our last vacation. Thank you so much - you have the best employees!

P

alm Springs is back. During the age of the Rat Pack in the 50s and 60s, Palm Springs was the epitome of cool as Sinatra and crew lived in the city’s midcentury modern homes and hung out at its posh hotels. But, in the decades that followed, the string of cities that once served as a desert getaway lost its luster as the times changed. Then, something unique occurred in the early 2000s–The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The annual mega-music festival brought a younger, hipper crowd to the area, and they soon discovered its retro-cool vibe and made it popular again. Today, you can find a mix of people–from Hollywood celebs to hikers to eastcoast vacationers–flocking to this desert retreat for some R&R with flair.

Just 100 miles east of LA, consider staying at one of these chic resorts that hark back to a different era.

JW MARRIOTT DESERT SPRINGS RESORT & SPA

Salton Sea or take a tour of the area’s historic architecture. Onsite you’ll find a roadside diner, full-service spa, two pools, a vintage photo booth, gym and a dog park. Its kitschy décor and character extends to its rooms–some featuring outdoor patios–and some with a record player and old vinyl. For evening entertainment, The Amigo Room is one of the hottest bars in town, serving artisanal cocktails and featuring live bands, DJs, comedians or performance artists nightly. Every Monday, the hotel offers Fabulous Bingo, which they describe as “a flamboyant night of sass, song and showbiz razzle-dazzle.”

LA QUINTA RESORT AND CLUB

The bungalow-styled resort opened in 1926 and bills itself as the original desert hideaway. You can stay in a Spanish casita with private patio, suite or in one of its villas along rows of orange groves. It’s the true definition of a resort with five championship golf courses, world-class tennis center, spa and salon. After you take a dip in one of its 41 pools, you can dine at one of its seven restaurants, serving locally sourced, awardwinning Mexican and American cuisine.

Located in Palm Desert (which is about 15 miles southeast of Palm Springs), the resort is best known for its 450 acres of lush landscapes, gondolas traveling its extensive waterways, two 18-hole golf courses, sandy beaches and a flamingo island. Relax by booking a day at the Spa at Desert Springs, which offers a full menu of massage services, Ayurvedic treatments and saltwater pool sessions. After a day at the spa, playing golf or lounging by one its five pools, you can dine at any one of its six restaurants and then cap the night by partying at its onsite nightclub, Costa’s.

KELSEY BAEZ MANAGER OF CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT, LAS VEGAS HEADQUARTERS By Christopher Lewis

K

elsey Baez likes to keep busy. When she’s not managing Allegiant’s World Mastercard program, you can usually find her out on a run or jet-setting around the globe. We caught up with Kelsey to discuss her latest project, latest travels and latest additions to her family. We know you currently manage Allegiant’s credit card program, but word is you’re working on something special. Can you give us a teaser? I’m developing our new loyalty program, which we expect to launch sometime next year. We want to engage and thank our customers in more ways. The goal is to keep it simple for everyone. You would earn a point per dollar, which you will be able to redeem at any of the Allegiant brands like Sunseeker Resort, G4CE, Kingsway Golf Course in Port Charlotte, Allegiant of course and any of our future partnerships. I can’t say too much about it right now, but we’re really excited about it.

What have been your favorite destinations so far? Definitely Iceland. It was a really cool experience. We drove around the whole country and saw a lot of different landscapes and did a lot of adventuring. I also really love Austin. I was able to fly there on Allegiant for the first time and I’ve been back a few times since. They have a great food scene and it’s such a fun place to visit. We also heard you have some new additions to your household. What can you tell us? My boyfriend and I adopted two puppies about a month apart early this year. We came across an organization in LA called the Dove Project that rescues dogs in South Korea. That’s how we found Mika, a Korean Jindo, who was about 3 months old when we adopted her. We couldn’t stand leaving her alone during the day and seeing her get so sad. That’s when we adopted a second puppy from the same organization, Coco. We try to take them on our travels now and then and it’s been a lot of fun.

And since my family is from Mesa, Arizona, I fly back and forth there all the time. It’s really nice to have that ability to visit my family that frequently. 84

Have you been able to take advantage of our travel benefits? Last year, I tracked all my flights and I flew over 75 times, so I’ve used them quite a bit (chuckle). I’ve done a few international trips now. I love to travel - It’s a big reason I got into this industry. I’ve been to Iceland, Australia and Cuba. I’m going to India this year. I’ve gotten to see a lot of this country and other countries as well.

Participants in Wings for All, Grand Forks International Airport

HELPING BUILD A BIGGER ARC THE ARC PARTNERS WITH ALLEGIANT TO EXPAND ITS WINGS FOR AUTISM®/WINGS FOR ALL® PROGRAM By Christoper Lewis

I

n September, North Dakota’s Grand Forks International Airport held its first-ever Wings for All program. The event is an airport “rehearsal” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities and their families. Participants go to an airport and practice making their way through security and the terminal before boarding a plane. A few weeks later, a similar event was held in Missouri at Springfield-Branson National Airport. For Allegiant, the event in Springfield was the ninth of the year it hosted along with The Arc, an organization advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. But for the communities in North Dakota and Missouri, these were their first.

Traditionally, those living in smaller cities like Grand Forks and Springfield have difficulty accessing the same programs and support like those who live in larger metropolitan areas. “Areas like Grand Forks are more rural. The airports are smaller. There are less flights. There is less traffic. So, it’s harder to get a plane there,” said Kerry Mauger, manager of

special projects at The Arc. “We had someone come from 90 miles away just to attend the event [in North Dakota]. That was their closest airport.” Thankfully, Allegiant is in the unique position to provide support to organizations like The Arc and those who live in less populated areas of the country because most of its routes originate from smaller airports. “We’re happy to help host Wings for All events across our network,” said Scott Sheldon, Allegiant executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief financial officer. “As a company, we are passionate about making air travel accessible to everyone.” Wings for Autism/Wings for All also gives the airport, airline and TSA professionals the opportunity to receive hands-on experience as they learn how to handle certain situations and provide the best ways to support and help families with autism and other intellectual disabilities who travel. The challenges of autism vary from person to person, as the spectrum is wide. As a whole, it’s common for those who are autistic, or someone with a similar disability, to suffer from a sensitivity to loud noises, confined spaces, crowds and even just a break from the normal routine. Wings for All provides families the opportunity to not only practice handling the challenges of air travel but also if they’re ready for it. “I think this experience really helps families figure out if air travel is something they can actually do in the near future, or if they need more practice,” Mauger said.

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN

MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel. SMOKING Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
