Lorena Garcia is the first female Latina chef on the Strip

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY MEET CHICA’S POWERHOUSE CELEBRITY CHEF LORENA GARCIA

By Gabriele Walkow

W

ith the May 14, 2017 opening of her stylish restaurant, CHICA, in prestigious Restaurant Row at The Venetian Las Vegas, celebrity chef Lorena Garcia made history, becoming the first female Latina chef and restaurateur on the Strip. This groundbreaking restaurant, taking over the DB Brasserie space, is not only The Venetian’s first Latin concept restaurant, but also the first of its kind in the Las Vegas market.

The colorful Classic Ceviche

Photo of Lorena Garcia courtesy of Lorena Garcia; Classic Ceviche and Pepita Crusted Lamb by Anthony Mair

Created in partnership with John Kunkel, founder of 50 Eggs, Inc., CHICA is the second Kunkel property at The Venetian—the first being the award-winning Yardbird Southern Table & Bar. CHICA is located next to its sister restaurant, creating a dynamic duo. Raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Garcia has crafted a diverse and vibrant menu presenting the robust flavors of Latin American cuisine as one culture, with inspiration and influences from Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, among many others. “CHICA is my big baby. It is close to my heart,” Garcia told Sunseeker. “We are presenting food in a way it has never been presented before at this flagship restaurant. We are combining femininity with fearlessness!” Signature dishes include a Tuna Ceviche, made from tuna nikkei in an apple infused leche de tigre; Meyer Lemon Rotisserie Chicken, served with Peruvian purple potato salad, fresh hearts of palm and an herb chimichurri; Asado Negro Arepas, created from house-made anise and piloncillo arepas, stuffed with braised short rib; and Kale Lime Chopped Salad, tossed in a citrus vinaigrette, topped with sour green apples, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds and croutons. Combine these flavorful dishes with innovative wine and cocktail pairings, and you have a meal extraordinaire!

The savory Pepita Crusted Lamb

“At CHICA we will also be offering different methods of cooking, all happening at the same time,” explained Garcia. “The kitchen features a built-in rotisserie wall and custom Churrasco grill, alongside a state-of-the-art cold bar serving as the focus of the restaurant.” Living in Miami for two decades, this powerhouse chef is also a TV personality, cookbook author and has created a line of kitchenware. Furthermore, she is the first female to be featured on The Venetian’s larger-than-life Culinary Titans Wall, joining an all male field of culinary heavyweights such as Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, Wolfgang Puck and Thomas Keller. A festive place where cultures and cuisines blend, CHICA is open daily for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. For more information, visit venetian.com/restaurants/chica.html. DINING

Audiences can enjoy some late-night laughs as well on Aug. 4 from 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. during the Late Night Comedy show at Edgewater Resort. Hosted by comedian Sean McBride, guests can expect some adults-only humor from both comedy newcomers and veterans during this hilarious after-hours production. Proving comedy isn’t just a man’s game, former “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” correspondent Kira Soltanovich will be hosting a Wild Women of Comedy show on Aug. 5 at Tropicana Laughlin. Happening from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the show will feature 10 of the funniest comediennes in the business performing their sidesplitting material. Who knows? You might just see the next Amy Schumer honing her craft.

While festivalgoers will surely be crying from laughing so hard during all of the free performances, guests definitely won’t want to miss Laughlin Laughfest’s three headliners. Anjelah Johnson is scheduled to perform at Edgewater Resort’s E Center on Aug. 4 at 9 p.m., with Jay Leno performing at the same venue the following night at 9 p.m. Rita Rudner, meanwhile, will take the stage at the Aquarius Pavilion on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at just $15 for each headlining performance, with tickets for Johnson and Leno going up to only $80 (plus tax and fees). Tickets for Rudner go up to only $35! Those in Las Vegas making the 90-mile journey south to Laughlin for the comedy festival will likely want to extend their weekend getaway to check out all of the awesome attractions in the area, too, like the classic car museum inside Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino. Visitors will find a rotating collection of antique, classic and special interest automobiles assembled from private collections, including several owned by Laughlin’s namesake founder. Admission to the first-floor showroom is free

to the public, while access to the third-floor showroom costs only $2 per person (admission is still free with a King of Clubs players’ card). Laughlin also hosts several other can’t-miss events throughout the year, such as the annual Rockets Over the River fireworks display. The largest fireworks show in the Southwest, guests will see more fireworks go off over the Colorado River than the fireworks over the Las Vegas Strip on New Year’s Eve. This year’s free event is scheduled for just after dark on July 1 and 4. “AMERICA’S GOT TALENT” CONTESTANTS ARE HEADLINING THEIR OWN LAS VEGAS SHOWS By Heather Turk

W

here does one go after winning over audiences on “America’s Got Talent?” To the Entertainment Capital of the World, of course! Several beloved performers from NBC’s hit reality competition “AGT” are headlining shows of their own on the Las Vegas Strip, giving fans a chance to see their favorite acts live.

The only magician to ever win “America’s Got Talent,” Mat Franco is one of Las Vegas’ fastest rising stars. Starring in “Mat Franco – Magic Reinvented Nightly” at The LINQ Hotel & Casino, demand to see the 29-yearold illusionist has been so great since he won Season 9 of “AGT” that he extended his performance schedule. Franco can soon be seen performing 10 shows a week starting July 10 in the renamed Mat Franco Theater. It’s clear this talented star will be staying here for awhile, and anyone who has seen him live before knows why: whether he’s using a $100 bill, a deck of cards or some packages of ramen, Franco knows how to mystify audience members of all ages with his head-scratching sleight-of-hand magic. matfranco.com

Now in his ninth year at The Mirage, this Season 2 “America’s Got Talent” winner has become a staple on the Las Vegas Strip. Known for changing his show every year to coincide with its anniversary, the singing comedianventriloquist recently introduced a new talk show format for the production, featuring some of his most beloved characters, including Winston the Impersonating Turtle and Emma Taylor. “Terry Fator: The VOICE of Entertainment presents Terry Fator Tonight” also features a new Elton John puppet and a President Trump puppet that’s sure to entertain members of both political parties. terryfator.com

PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON

This hilarious magician and his Chihuahua sidekick, Mr. Piffles, may not have won Season 10 of “America’s Got Talent,” but they put on one of the Strip’s best shows. Performing inside Flamingo Las Vegas, Piff the Magic Dragon’s comedy-magic show is unlike anything else on the Strip—and not just because it features a grown man dressed in a dragon costume. Piff is sure to keep audiences laughing throughout the show with his deprecating humor, while also leaving ticket holders’ mouths agape at his impressive illusions. In a city full of iconic illusionists, Piff the Magic Dragon is a legend in the making. piffthemagicdragon.com 22

George Strait returns to T-Mobile Arena in July to play all 60 of his No. 1 hits

A CHART-TOPPING CONCERT EXPERIENCE GEORGE STRAIT RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS WITH “2 NIGHTS OF NUMBER 1’S”

By H. Wadowski

F

ollowing his wildly successful “2 Nights of Number 1’s” engagement at T-Mobile Arena in April, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee George Strait will continue the concept of playing his record-setting collection of 60 No. 1 hits when he returns to Las Vegas for two very special performances this July. “Back when we announced ‘2 Nights of Number 1’s,’ I said if the fans wanted to hear more, we would look at it,” Strait, who has sold nearly 70 million albums and earned more than 60 major entertainment industry awards, said in a

statement issued to the press. “Well, we heard them loud and clear. This is something they want more of, so that’s what they will get.”

Tickets to see “2 Nights of Number 1’s” are expected to go fast, as all of Strait’s previous performances at T-Mobile Arena have sold out. VIP Experiences are available as well, which include premium concert tickets, exclusive merchandise gifts and access to the King’s Exhibit, featuring memorabilia showcasing Strait’s unparalleled career.

ENTERTAINMENT

“2 Nights of Number 1’s” runs July 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $50 to $200 each night, plus tax and fees. Strait will return to the Las Vegas Strip again later this year for four additional performance dates at T-Mobile Arena: Sept. 1 and 2, and Dec. 8 and 9, during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. For more information, visit t-mobilearena.com.

A concert experience unlike any other, fans can expect to hear 30 of the King of Country’s No. 1 hits on July 28 and his other 30 No. 1 hits on July 29, with some fan favorites like “Troubadour” and “Amarillo by Morning,” that surprisingly never topped the charts, mixed into the set lists as well. As if hearing “Fool Hearted Memory,” “River of Love” and the 58 other No. 1 singles—making Strait the only music act in history to have a Top 10 hit every year for more than three decades—live over the two-day period wasn’t memorable enough, Las Vegas is also the only place fans can still see Strait performing. The country icon stepped away from touring in 2014 with The Cowboy Rides Away tour and announced in 2015 that T-Mobile Arena would be the only place fans could see him in 2016, thanks to his exclusive concert series Strait to Vegas, which he later extended through 2017.

“Menopause The Musical” follows four women going through The Change

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER CINDY WILLIAMS HAS THE TIME OF HER LIFE IN “MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL”

By Heather Turk

M

ost women can’t wait for menopause to be over, but not Cindy Williams—the “Laverne & Shirley” actress recently extended her guest-starring role in “Menopause The Musical” at Harrah’s Las Vegas. Appearing in the show through Sept. 2, this run marks Williams’ second stint in the Las Vegas production and the fifth time she has performed in the show nationwide. “The show is so good on its own they had to find places to add me,” Williams, who emcees the production, told Sunseeker. “It was like trying to squeeze a square peg in a round hole.” Featuring parodies of songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, like “My Husband Sleeps Tonight” instead of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Menopause The Musical” takes a subject that most people consider to be a downer and turns it into a hilarious celebration of women and The Change.

Williams’ costar on ‘Laverne & Shirley’) actually used to keep her bedroom below freezing. She had heavy winter jackets for guests to wear when they’d come visit.” While the show may poke fun of The Change, never once do women feel like the butt of the joke. “That’s the beauty of ‘Menopause The Musical,’” Williams said. “There’s no, ‘We’re the performers and you’re the audience.’ We’re all friends having fun together.” “Menopause The Musical” runs Monday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 4 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Monday. Tickets start at $52.95. For more information, visit menopausethemusical.com.

“I love the show,” Williams said. “I can honestly watch it over and over again. It’s that rare show that makes me laugh out loud. The songs are all such wonderful parodies, too, it really surprises you. They are beyond clever.”

Photos by Erik Kabik

Similar to “Laverne & Shirley,” which oftentimes would find the humor in a bad situation, Williams noted that “Menopause The Musical” takes “this excruciating thing” women go through and makes it easy for them to laugh at their troubles. “I remember this one time I was having hot flashes but I was so tired I couldn’t get out of bed,” Williams recalled. “So, I asked my husband at the time if he could bring this big fan into the bedroom. I kept telling him to bring it closer and closer. Finally he told me, ‘If I bring it any closer, you’re going to get a haircut from this fan!’ It was ridiculous. Penny (Marshall,

Stacey Whitton Summers as Marilyn Monroe in “Legends in Concert”

A LEGEND IN THE MAKING

ERIC MARTSOLF HEATS THINGS UP AS GUEST HOST OF “LEGENDS IN CONCERT” By Heather Turk

G

iven the demanding “Days of Our Lives” production schedule, which often films 120 to 140 pages in a single day, one might think Eric Martsolf (who plays Brady Black on the daytime drama) would enjoy taking some time off during the three weeks the show goes dark in the summer. Instead, the Daytime Emmy Award winner decided to take on a new role: guest host for “Legends in Concert.” Appearing in the show through July 15, Martsolf got the gig, ironically, when one of his friends showed a video of him singing Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation” at a Hot in Hollywood benefit to “Legends’” producer, Mark Mercer.

Joining Martsolf onstage will be “Legends’” current lineup through Labor Day, which includes tribute artists performing as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Dusty Springfield. When asked which legend he wished he’d seen live, Martsolf was torn between Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson because of the way they could captivate an audience, although he would have loved to have taken Marilyn Monroe out to In-N-Out Burger.

Eager to cross off appearing in a Las Vegas show from his bucket list, the actor-singer (who admitted he took his first role onstage as Danny Zuko in his high school production of “Grease” to impress a cheerleader) accepted the offer. With only one day to rehearse before his June 27 debut, Martsolf noted that hosting “Legends” wasn’t really that far of a stretch from acting in a soap opera.

“But then I would have hit on her and she would have turned me down and my self-esteem would have gone in the toilet,” he joked.

“I got a call saying they wanted to try something new and I was like, ‘Isn’t this the longestrunning show in Las Vegas?’” Martsolf recalled.

“I’ve done 15 years of daytime television, so I understand the energy and work ethic that goes into a show like this,” Martsolf, who also played Ethan Winthrop on “Passions” for six years, said. “These performers are completely committed to doing the best they can every night. They can’t do things nine-tenths of the way when bringing an icon like Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley back to life.”

Mariah Carey begins her Las Vegas residency “MARIAH #1 TO INFINITY” by performing her first chart-topping single, “Vision of Love”

THAT’S A WRAP! “MARIAH #1 TO INFINITY” RETURNS TO THE COLOSSEUM STAGE ONE LAST TIME By H. Wadowski

T

urns out infinity doesn’t last forever after all. After opening at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on May 6, 2015, Mariah Carey’s first Las Vegas residency, “MARIAH #1 TO INFINITY,” is coming to an end. The show will wrap up its successful two-year engagement at the prestigious Strip venue with a six-show run July 8, 9, 11, 14, 15 and 18 at 8 p.m., with the final show marking the production’s 50th performance. “Over the past 50 years, Caesars Palace has served as home to the most iconic entertainers, and we couldn’t have been more proud to have Mariah Carey as part of our rich history,” said Jason Gastwirth, Caesars Entertainment’s senior vice president of marketing and entertainment, in a statement issued to the press. “With each performance embodying a true Vegas spectacular, Mariah Carey

has reigned among the city’s long roster of legendary talents.” A show that’s not to be missed, “MARIAH #1 TO INFINITY” turns the spotlight on the charttopping singles that made Mariah Carey the best-selling female artist of all time. Featuring each of Carey’s 18 No. 1 hits performed in chronological order, audiences will go on a musical journey that truly showcases the evolution of Mimi. From Carey’s 1990 debut single, “Vision of Love,” to 2008’s “Touch My Body,” fans will hear all of their favorite songs in one spectacular show. Conceptualized by Carey, directed by legendary Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich (who also directed Céline Dion’s second hit residency at The Colosseum, “Céline”) and brought to life with the help of creative director Raj Kapoor,

ONE HOT SUMMER LINEUP A LOOK AT WHICH HEADLINERS ARE RETURNING TO LAS VEGAS THIS JULY AND AUGUST Mariah Carey isn’t the only A-list music artist returning to Las Vegas this summer with a residency or extended engagement. Country superstars Reba and Brooks & Dunn will wrap up the latest run of “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas” inside The Colosseum at Caesars Palace July 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. Then on July 29 at 8 p.m., The Who kicks off their first residency at the venue. Additional performances run Aug. 1, 4, 7, 9 and 11. Sir Rod Stewart returns to The Colosseum in August, too, with “Rod Stewart: The Hits,” performing Aug. 18, 19, 22, 26, 27 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. thecolosseum.com

“MARIAH #1 TO INFINITY” embodies the true meaning of Vegas glitz and glamour while simultaneously keeping all eyes—and ears—on Carey. Although she is accompanied onstage by a six-piece band, three backup vocalists, two DJs and 10 dancers (choreographed by the double Emmy Award-winning choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo, better known as Nappytabs), it’s Carey’s remarkable vocals and five-octave range that truly command the audience’s attention. There’s no doubt the powerhouse singer truly gives her all to the unforgettable production. In addition to hearing all of Carey’s charttopping hits performed live, including “Someday,” “Fantasy” and “Heartbreaker,” fans will get to hear Carey sing her 2015 single, “Infinity,” at the end of the show. Carey peppers in a few surprises throughout the production, too, like when she brings a lucky fan onstage to help her out with one of her more seductive numbers.

While all good things must eventually come to an end, fans can rest assured that Carey’s July performance dates will not be her last at The Colosseum. In fact, Carey has already teased a holiday return at the venue. Fans can expect to hear Carey’s iconic Christmas catalog—including the holiday staple “All I Want for Christmas is You”—when she returns for six must-see performances this December.

Over at The AXIS inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, “Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life” finishes its latest run at the venue July 1 at 9 p.m., before Pitbull brings his Las Vegas show, “Time of Our Lives,” back for an eight-night limited engagement, running Wednesday, Friday and Saturday July 21-Aug. 5 at 9 p.m. Britney Spears will continue some of her final performances of “Britney: Piece of Me” as well, performing Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Aug. 9-30 at 9 p.m. caesars.com/planet-hollywood/shows Two of Las Vegas’ hottest new concert productions will also be returning to Park Theater at Monte Carlo. ith its vibrant imagery and catchy music, Blue Man Group’s euphoric show at Luxor Hotel and Casino is generally a safe bet for those looking for a production that will keep even the youngest member of their family entertained. Of course, it’s one thing to say a show is kidfriendly and another thing to actually experience it with a child. That’s why Sunseeker recently took a 4-year-old to see Blue Man Group and got his reaction to the show. Even though Colin lives near the Strip, he had never seen a Las Vegas production before, so there was no telling how the active youngster would handle it. Colin couldn’t have been more excited, though, even refusing at first to wear the complimentary earplugs he was given because he wanted to “rock and roll.” Colin’s attitude changed slightly once the Blue Men began drumming, opting to wear the earplugs so the music wasn’t quite as loud, although he later told his mom that his favorite part of the show was when the Blue Men would drum “really loudly.” Like most audience members, Colin laughed along during Blue Man Group’s more comical bits—like when the trio eats some Cap’n Crunch cereal noisily and when they try to woo an audience member with a Twinkie feast—and even danced along to the music where appropriate, including during the audience participation segment where the Blue Men demonstrate some popular rock concert movements. He was engaged in the show from start to finish and, according to his mom, continued to talk about it weeks later. In Colin’s own words, “It was the bestest Blue Man show ever!” After the performance, Colin was surprised with a private meet and greet with a Blue Man backstage, where he got to take photos with the Blue Man and even touch his grease-painted head. Allegiant passengers can purchase a VIP meet-and-greet upgrade at the box office

for just $30 a person and receive special deals when they purchase their show tickets onboard. Blue Man Group performs nightly at 7 and 9:30 p.m. (dark Aug. 30), with an additional 4 p.m. performance on select days; there is no 9:30 p.m. performance on July 4. ere are my 10 favorite things to do in Las Vegas, each of which is especially fun for me because I actually live in this super fun and exciting city! I love going to the Las Vegas Strip, especially Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino because that’s where I do my show, “Gordie Brown Live” (selfless plug!). Lots of good restaurants there, too, although you can’t beat Strip House for a great steak! I enjoy any Landry’s restaurant, like Vic & Anthony’s inside the Golden Nugget, but one of my favorite restaurants off the beaten path is Capo’s Speakeasy. This Mobthemed Italian restaurant has great dim lighting and the meatballs—fuhgeddaboudit! There’s also Hank’s Fine Steaks inside Green Valley Ranch. I go there a lot. No, really, ask my accountant!

If you’re looking for something a little more “grounded,” I suggest visiting the High Roller at The LINQ Promenade. It’s the world’s largest “O” and takes 30 minutes to complete one revolution. Super cool! Shows to see? Besides mine of course (wink, wink) would be Céline Dion at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace—her show and talent are beyond compare—and awardwinning magician Criss Angel at Luxor. That guy can make time disappear! When I have out-of-state visitors, I always recommend the Hoover Dam Tour. For one, it gives me a break, and secondly, I know they’ll enjoy it, so it makes me the hero. On my off days, I like to head out to Red Rock Canyon for a quick hike. I don’t really like to hike, but the surrounding beauty is well worth the trip each and every time.

10

Okay, I’m losing count here. Is that 10 things to do in Las Vegas yet? Yes! But allow me to sneak in one more—Las Vegas is finally getting an NHL team! So, any hockey game at T-Mobile Arena that involves the Vegas Golden Knights, check it out!

Twin tap-dancing brothers Sean and Jon Scott are a crowd favorite at “Absinthe”

REDISCOVERING A LOST ART TWIN TAP-DANCING BROTHERS STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT IN “ABSINTHE”

By Heather Turk

S

ince its premiere at Caesars Palace in 2011, “Absinthe” has become one of Las Vegas’ most lauded shows. The intimate production, which is housed in a 550-seat tent in front of the resort, quickly made a name for itself thanks to its amazing acrobatic acts and hilariously inappropriate host, The Gazillionaire. However, while the jaw-dropping variety show features several death-defying performances, one of its most popular acts doesn’t involve roller skates, trapeze bars or aerial straps—just a couple of pairs of tap shoes.

at “Absinthe” for the past three years. Although they’ve performed for some of the biggest names in music, including Prince and Madonna, Jon admitted that when he and his brother were first cast in “Absinthe,” he wasn’t sure how audiences would react to them.

Twin tap-dancing brothers Sean and Jon Scott have been bringing the house—err, tent—down

Jon said he and his brother work hard every performance to make tap dancing appeal to a new generation. The brothers started tap dancing when they were just six years old and took their act to the streets when they were 14. Although they briefly stopped dancing for a year when they were 16, they eventually started again and realized as they got older that not many people were tap dancing anymore.

“Absinthe’s” amazing roller skating duo, Skates of Hell

“I was intimidated at first,” Jon told Sunseeker. “Every act in the show is so good I didn’t know how we were supposed to compete. I didn’t think we were on the same level, but that just pushed us more.”

“What we’re doing first and foremost is a lost art,” Jon said. “There aren’t that many tap dancers out there, especially twin tap dancers, so we decided to take advantage of it.” Now, their talents are being showcased alongside some of the most impressive variety acts from around the world.

“These are all A-one acts,” Jon said of his “Absinthe” castmates. “It’s so cool to be a part of this show. It’s sexy, it’s funny, it’s raunchy, it’s wild—it’s definitely worth every penny. as Vegas can now list itself alongside Istanbul, Jerusalem, Morocco and London as having one of the world’s great air markets. The Grand Bazaar Shops are a 21stcentruy bazaar offering dining, entertainment, apparel, footwear, eyewear, accessories, jewelry, health, beauty and specialty outlets. From world-renowned brands to local favorites, Allegiant travelers can shop until they drop! Conveniently located on two acres at the busiest pedestrian intersection in the city, Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, directly in front of Bally’s and across from the Fountains of Bellagio, the Grand Bazaar Shops are a fun and exciting destination. According to Allen R. Bowman, General Manager of Grand Bazaar Shops, over 38 million people visited last year, discovering Wahlburgers, Redneck Riviera, Sin City Brewing Co., Amy’s Donut Factory, Tokyo Art Nail Bar, Bauer’s Sunglasses, Swarovski, Alex and Ani, Superdry and LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics.

DAVID COPPERFIELD

JABBAWOCKEEZ’ “JREAMZ, JOURNEY WITHIN”

Jabbawockeez’ hit show at MGM Grand isn’t just a lively dance production with some humor sprinkled throughout—it’s also a show about living life to its fullest. Not only will audiences be amazed by the impressive dance moves from the Season 1 “America’s Best Dance Crew” champions, but some ticket holders might even find themselves relating to the show’s main character, PJ, who is stuck sleepwalking through life rather than living it. While guests will be cheering and bopping along to the music during the energetic performance, they’ll leave the theater feeling motivated to do what makes them happy—and what parent doesn’t want that for their child? jbwkz.com 42

An experience you won’t forget—no matter how old you are—David Copperfield’s long-running show at MGM Grand is simply astounding. Copperfield effortlessly mixes intimate sleight-of-hand magic with grand illusions, doing everything from making a 30-foot-tall dinosaur appear out of thin air to making someone levitate in the middle of the audience. While the illusions are nothing short of incredible, what makes the show so remarkable are the engaging stories Copperfield weaves throughout the production, especially when he talks about following his childhood dream of becoming a magician. Kids and adults alike will be affected by Copperfield’s pursuit to “live the impossible,” especially as they watch the impossible become possible with each jaw-dropping illusion. mgmgrand.com/en/entertainment/david-copperfield.html

TASTE WHAT’S ON TAP AT THESE LOCAL BREWERIES By Heather Turki

T

here may be plenty of places to enjoy your favorite beer in Las Vegas, but why not try something new during your stay? The city boasts several local breweries known for their tasty brews, giving even the biggest beer aficionado something different to savor.

ELLIS ISLAND HOTEL, CASINO & BREWERY

TRIPLE 7 RESTAURANT AND MICROBREWERY

Sharing its brewing facilities with Lovelady Brewing in Henderson, this craft brewery distributes its beers weekly to its four namesake

Pouring five year-round beers plus rotating seasonal selections, this downtown microbrewery inside Main Street Station brews all of its craft beers on site. Guests can sip such popular selections as the crisp High Roller Gold and slightly hoppy Royal Red Lager, while dining on an extensive menu that includes everything from pizza and prime rib to sushi and sandwiches (try the Cheezy Garlic Bread made from fresh-baked pizza dough—it’s delicious!). In addition to 16-ounce drafts for $3.95 and 23-ounce drafts for $4.50, guests can sample 5-ounce pours of five different microbrews for $6.99. mainstreetcasino.com/ dine/triple-7-restaurant-and-microbrewery

This off-Strip favorite on Koval Lane brews five beers year round—a Light, an Amber, a Stout, a Weiss and an IPA—plus a seasonal selection. The beers are offered throughout the property and poured directly from the brewery’s tanks, which are located just off the casino floor. Priced at only $2.50 for a 20-ounce draft, guests will be hard-pressed to find a better deal in town. While the beers are enjoyable on their own, they also complement the delectable entrées from the property’s Village Pub and Café. Diners can pair their brew with such affordable, palate-pleasing dishes as the Filet-Cut Top Sirloin Steak or the signature Fish & Chips. Got kids in tow? The property pours root beer fresh from its brewery’s tanks, too. ellisislandcasino.com

bars on the Strip (inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, at Grand Bazaar Shops at Bally’s Las Vegas, inside Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian I The Palazzo and at the corner of Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard). Offering five traditional-style flagship beers as well as a rotating seasonal selection, guests can enjoy a pint for $7 or a full growler for only $20. While the Sin City Amber might be the brewery’s bestseller, the refreshing Sin City Light is a recommended summer selection and much more flavorful than a Bud Light. sincitybeer.com

This year’s event, appropriately titled Downtown Rocks (vegasexperience.com), will not only feature concerts by famous artists on the 1st and 3rd Street Stages, but also the opportunity for fans to win autographed giveaways, attend meet and greets with the acts and more. Another popular place to enjoy live music is the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (dlvec. com). July, in particular, features several big-name events, including a co-headlining concert by Rise Against and Deftones on July 8 at 7:30 p.m. Guests can expect a memorable evening of music and mosh pits when the two bands take the stage. Then on July 15 at 8 p.m., multi-platinum rockers the Goo Goo Dolls return to the venue with their Long Way Home summer tour, performing with Season 11 “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips. Other shows scheduled at the venue this July and August include the I Love The 90’s – The Party Continues Tour featuring R&B girl group TLC on July 21 at 8 p.m.; the new wave Retro Futura tour headlined by synth pioneer Howard Jones on July 22 at 8 p.m.; and Rancid and Dropkick Murphys’ coheadlining punk tour, From Boston to Berkeley, on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. Golden Nugget Las Vegas’ hit 52 Fridays concert series continues throughout the summer months, too, inside the resort’s air-conditioned Showroom (goldennugget. com/lasvegas/show_52fridays.asp). Take me out to the ball game

PLAY BALL!

FIVE REASONS TO HIT CASHMAN FIELD FOR A LAS VEGAS 51S TRIPLE A BASEBALL GAME By Brian Hurlburt

L

as Vegas is garnering attention nationally and internationally because the National Hockey League and National Football League will now be part of the Las Vegas sporting scene. However, it should never be forgotten, even when the Vegas

Golden Knights and Oakland Raiders begin to play, that the Las Vegas 51s are the longest-standing sports team in the history of Las Vegas and are always a local favorite. While recently taking in the action and sipping a brew, Sunseeker came up with our top five reasons to take it out to the ball game at Cashman Field!

5. NEW YORK, NEW YORK

You can get a taste of the Big Apple with the 51s, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. Each year, many of the 51s players get called up to the big club. For native New Yorkers, Cashman has become a home away from home. Grab a slice and enjoy.

4. THE FUTURE IS ALWAYS NOW

Fans can watch some of the top young talent in baseball as they either play for the 51s or against the local team. Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndegaard are two stars among many who have gotten the call up to the majors after playing locally.

3. DOLLAR. BEER. NIGHT.

This one needs little explanation about why it’s a favorite. Each Thursday, when the home team is in town, is Budweiser dollar beer night, and that’s a pretty good deal any way you look at it.

2. AFFORDABLE FAMILY FUN

In the day and age of exorbitant ticket prices for concerts and major league games, the Las Vegas 51s remain one of the most affordable forms of entertainment in Las Vegas. Family value four packs are offered for only $56 and include four game tickets, four hats, four programs and four vouchers for a hot dog and soda.

1. BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE

Epic fireworks nights at the game always draw a big crowd 56

RECREATION

The fireworks nights are always a crowd favorite and the team hosts several throughout the season. This post-game display rivals any July 4th show. Fireworks dates for 2017 include June 16, June 23, July 4, July 14, Aug. 4, Aug. 25 and Sept. 1.

Since general admission is free to The Broad, advance tickets go fast, but there is an onsite standby line for first come, first served access every day except Monday, when the museum is closed.

Just steps away from The Broad, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of four venues that comprise The Music Center (musiccenter.org) in downtown Los Angeles. Home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, complimentary guided tours of the concert hall are offered on select days or guests can take a self-guided audio tour narrated by actor John Lithgow. Free docent-led tours of The Music Center campus are available as well.

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

My husband and I traveled on Allegiant from Tampa to Tulsa and wanted to compliment one of your staff members. A young blind woman and her dog sat across from us and the male attendant was so helpful and kind in instructing and assisting the young woman - it was great to see him take the time to make a difference! His example demonstrates a kindness you don’t see very often anymore in the airline industry - Kudos to this young man and Allegiant!

Just wanted to congratulate you on your new program for active duty military and families!!! As the mother of an active duty Marine, I can tell you that this will make an incredibly positive impact on SO many service people and their families. Again-congratulations, and thanks, from the bottom of my heart!

I want to congratulate Allegiant on probably the best travel experience my wife and I had on our trip from Ogdensburg, NY to Sanford, FL. The staff at both locations were excellent, we have highly recommended Allegiant to friends (as well as the Customs officer at the Canadian border who asked if we would recommend Allegiant). Thanks again for a convenient, low cost, pleasant experience.

MAKE-A-WISH ®

A wall of wish stories

ALLEGIANT’S COMMITMENT TO MAKE-A-WISH® GROWS WITH OPENING OF THE WISHING PLACE By Brandon Meyers

T

ucked away in a quiet business park on the west side of Las Vegas is The Wishing Place, the new headquarters for Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada. Inside its newly renovated walls, the smell of new carpet and fresh paint still linger, even months after its February 2017 opening. It’s a large open space that is a part of Allegiant’s campus and was donated by the airline a year ago. In the center, employees busily work at their desks to make wishes come true. Along the outer edges are the rooms and walls that tell a story—the story of how children stricken with a life-threating medical condition search for a way forward. There’s the Family Room with its comfy couch and fluffy grey bean bag chair. It’s a place where the child may meet their Wish Granter for the first time, and together, they will begin the journey of discovering their wish.

“That’s what the wish experience is. We come in and tell them to dream about anything they want, and it really gives the emotional medicine they need,” said Caroline Ciocca, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada. “Now that we have The Wishing Place, we tell the story of granting wishes and how important and life-changing that is not only for the child, but for the family and volunteers who are involved—that’s priceless,” Caroline said. Since 2012, Allegiant has been a proud supporter of Make-A-Wish® and has donated over 800 wish flights to families nationwide and over $1.5 million in the renovation of The Wishing Place. Additionally, Allegiant donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. To find out how you can help make wishes come true, visit wish.org.

Along the side is Linda’s Wishing Counter. It’s a common area and candy shop modeled after a 1950s diner counter adorned in Allegiant blue. Next to it is the Allegiant Hangar Room dedicated to training volunteers. On its walls are over 150 words of inspiration provided by Allegiant’s team members. And on the wall near the rear of the building is The Journey of a Wish. It’s where 22 children tell the story of how their wish was granted. It’s 22 journeys of hope.
