A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
For years, people have been asking Wayne Newton if they could see Casa de Shenandoah, the singer’s legendary 52-acre Las Vegas estate located just off Sunset Road. However, even Mr. Las Vegas himself has been surprised by the number of people who’ve booked tours of the property since opening its golden gates to the public last September. “There’s just been this interest like I never thought there would be,” Newton said. “Three networks have even reached out about doing a reality show [about Casa de Shenandoah].” Various tours are now available allowing guests to see Newton’s former home up close as well as the newly established Wayne Newton Museum, which features memorabilia from the showman’s storied career. Visit casadeshenandoah.com for more details.

llegiant passengers hoping to do a little shopping during their summer vacation will discover that two of Las Vegas’ most luxurious retail centers are actually kittycornered from each other on the Strip. Encompassing nearly 3 million square feet and featuring more than 350 stores combined, Fashion Show and Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian I The Palazzo are two of the city’s most popular places to shop ’til you drop. Boasting department stores like Barneys New York at Grand Canal Shoppes and Dillard’s, DICK’s Sporting Goods, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Macy’s Men’s Store and Forever 21 at Fashion Show, both retail centers have welcomed several new tenants in recent months. In fact, Fashion Show unveiled a new 22,000-square-foot outdoor plaza last November. Facing Las Vegas Boulevard, it features several small freestanding shops and full-service restaurants, including Kona Grill, Luke’s Lobster, Pressed Juicery, Sticks & Shakes, Wicked Pizza and Davidoff of Geneva Cigar Bar, as well as a newly expanded 30,000-square-foot flagship Zara. The retail powerhouse is on track to open 25 stores in 2016 as well, with such notable additions as Swatch, Kiko Milano, New Balance, Tadashi Shoji, Sephora and Under Armour already open. Atomic Liquors is the oldest bar in Las Vegas and a downtown hot spot
VINTAGE VEGAS THREE LAS VEGAS HOT SPOTS THAT SERVE UP LEGENDARY EXPERIENCES By Brian Hurlburt
I
f you watch Las Vegas closely, there’s a tendency to talk about the future and forget the past. But look a little deeper and you will discover hidden spots across the city, which have achieved legendary status. Here are three of our favorites that continue to deliver excellence but have a deep and compelling history
Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin were regulars back in the heyday, but the vibe continues today with other megastars enjoying the menu. You never know whom you will spot at the Golden Steer, known for its prime rib, New York strip and filet mignon selections, plus desserts that amaze the eyes, especially the Cherries Jubilee Flambé. goldensteersteakhouselasvegas.com

DINING
If you haven’t enjoyed a date night at Peppermill Restaurant and Lounge on the Las Vegas Strip, well, you really haven’t experienced this city. While Atomic Liquors might be the oldest Vegas bar, the Peppermill just might be the most iconic. Decorated with neon lighting, large booths and a fireside lounge, this place sets the mood for a romantic evening perfectly. With desserts nearly the size of a slot machine, the Peppermill is also just plain fun for the whole family. A large menu features the famous flagship Peppermill Burger while their signature 64-ounce Scorpion is the prototypical Vegas cocktail. Too many television shows and movies have been filmed here to mention. peppermilllasvegas.com

This is an epic first in Las Vegas. What is now Atomic Liquors, one of the top hangout bars in thriving downtown Las Vegas, was a café way back in the 1930s. When original owners Joe and Stella Sobchik weren’t happy with the return on their investment, they soon acquired the first liquor license in Las Vegas and Atomic Liquors was born. Atomic Liquors is now the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas but features an updated vibe. Kin of the Sobchiks sold the bar in 2012 to a local attorney who remodeled it to its “original glory,” including a tribute to Joe and Stella. atomicvegas.com

The fare is equally delightful, offering an array of playful Japanese favorites. While specialty rolls like the Volcano Roll (eel, cream cheese, avocado, spicy snow crab and scallops baked with a spicy dynamite sauce) take center stage, non-sushi diners will find a variety of dishes to please their palates as well. Be sure to try the luscious ROK Chicken drizzled with a tangy teriyaki sauce and don’t forget to save room for the Sata Andagi: Japanese donut holes served with an Asian pear dipping sauce. sakerokvegas.com

Of course, not all of the buffet’s seafood selections are exclusive to the premium seafood area. Like before, guests who just purchase dinner at Carnival World will still have access to several seafood dishes, including Cajun crawfish, hot and cold crab legs and oven-roasted salmon. Diners can also enjoy Carnival World’s scrumptious dinner spread, which includes freshly carved items like juicy prime rib and oven-roasted pork loin. There are a couple of live-action food stations as well. At the made-toorder Asian soup station guests can choose from seven different options such as Vietnamese pho, and at the teppanyaki station visitors can pick from either chicken, beef or shrimp and watch as the chef prepares their dish using a variety of fresh vegetables. While the premium seafood area is closed during lunch/brunch hours, guests can still enjoy several delicacies from the sea earlier in the day, including blackened trout and an assortment of fresh sushi rolls. Other afternoon favorites include the aforementioned live-action food stations, dim sum and a full dessert station boasting nine gelato flavors (try the Elvis: peanut butter, banana and jelly). Carnival World & Seafood Buffet is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the premium seafood section open daily for dinner from 3 to 10 p.m. For more information, visit caesars.com/rio-las-vegas/restaurants/ carnival-world-and-seafood-buffet.

WAYNE’S WORLD MR. LAS VEGAS WELCOMES FANS TO BEAUTIFUL CASA DE SHENANDOAH By Heather Turk
F
ollowing countless requests from fans and neighbors alike, Wayne Newton has finally opened the gates of his legendary 52-acre Las Vegas property to the public. “Over the years, I’d get letters from fans and notes left in my mailbox and onstage asking if there was any possible way to see my horses and the ranch,” Newton recalled. “Everyone always thought the walls were to keep people out, but really they were to keep us in.” Home to more than 60 Arabian horses and several exotic animals, including penguins, wallabies and a curious Capuchin monkey named Boo, guests can now tour Newton’s lush Casa de Shenandoah grounds by booking one of several guided tours available Monday through Saturday. Depending on the type of tour booked, guests will be able to enter the barn, walk through Newton’s childhood home and tour his breathtaking two-story mansion, which houses several hidden rooms and priceless pieces of art—including a painting Margaret Keane made specifically for Newton.
museum,” Newton stated when asked about the tours. “I felt too close to be objective, so I called upon my wife, who is not only an attorney but also an incredible interior decorator, to put it together piece by piece.” While the museum has hundreds of items on display, including letters from former presidents and costumes his mother made for him when he was just four years old, Newton said there are “100,000 other things” still in storage, so he keeps adding things as he finds them. “I’m a bit of a packrat,” Newton stated with a laugh. “We may have opened the Wayne Newton Museum, but the truth of the matter is the museum is anything but,” Newton humbly stated. “There’s stuff about Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Jack Benny on display. People constantly have
Guests will also get to watch an Arabian horse demonstration or see one of Newton’s horses swim in the private horse pool and visit the Wayne Newton Museum, which details Newton’s career and history performing for the troops through the USO. The museum includes Newton’s luxury automobile collection, too, and his old private jet, in which guests can take a picture while seated in the cockpit. “The cars and animals were my decision [to include], but my wife gets full credit for the 24

Although Newton and his family no longer live on the property, Newton still visits daily to walk the barn and check on the animals whenever he’s in town. “It’s the first thing I used to do when I’d come home from work and I still do it today,” Newton said. “It gives me a sense of peacefulness that allows me to go to sleep. For more information, visit casadeshenandoah.com and for tickets to “Wayne Newton: Up Close and Personal,” visit ballyslasvegas.com.
Fans can also see Newton performing in his new show at Bally’s Las Vegas, “Wayne Newton: Up Close and Personal,” which Newton said is different from anything he’s ever done. “If people want to hear a song, I’ll do it. If they have a question, I’ll answer it,” he said of the intimate 398-seat production. ”I want to show people [the type of show that] made Las Vegas.” Always a champion of the city, Newton may joke that the only reason he’s Mr. Las Vegas is because he wouldn’t leave, but the truth of the matter is that he’s Las Vegas’ biggest fan. In fact, memorabilia from his favorite Las Vegas memory—which just happened in April—was recently added to the museum’s collection. “I was very honored to be asked to help open up the new T-Mobile Arena,” Newton said. “I asked myself, ‘What kind of show should I do for 20,000 people?’ and decided to write a show that pays tribute to the performers who made Las Vegas what it is. I closed my segment with ‘My Way’ as a tribute to Frank Sinatra, and as I looked out into the crowd as a single spotlight shone down on me, 20,000 people turned on their cell phone lights. There’s a picture of that moment and it’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen. I’m not a crier, but I actually teared up when I saw it,

The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley (right) & Bucky Heard (left)
ONE RIGHTEOUS RESIDENCY BILL MEDLEY BRINGS BACK THAT LOVIN’ FEELIN’ By Heather Turk
B
obby Hatfield may have passed away in November 2003, but audiences never lost that lovin’ feelin’ for the Righteous Brothers. “My friends were always on my case,” said Bill Medley, who along with Hatfield, made up the beloved Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo. “They were like, ‘People want the Righteous Brothers. Go do the Righteous Brothers,’ but I turned down a million offers. I sang with a couple of guys, but it never felt right until I ran into Bucky Heard.” Performing at Harrah’s Las Vegas, Medley brings the music of the Righteous Brothers back to the stage with the help of one of the most versatile vocalists in America. During the unforgettable concert, Medley and Heard perform some of the Righteous Brothers’ biggest hits, including the most played song in radio history: “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” Medley also takes the stage to sing “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with his daughter and to perform a heartwarming tribute to Hatfield while singing “Unchained Melody” by himself.

“I probably shouldn’t say this, but I’m surprised the show is doing so well,” Medley humbly stated. “Bucky and I went to Laughlin for five days to break the show in and we were turning away people every night.”
“People ask me, ‘When are you going to retire?’ and I always say I have to have a job first before I can retire,” Medley stated. “This isn’t work to me—this is a 15-year-old boy getting to live out his dream. I love music and I love performing; it’s what drives me. When I walk out onstage, I’m not 75-year-old Bill Medley, I’m 25-year-old Bill Medley. Something magically takes over my body and I think the audience feels the same thing.” The Righteous Brothers: Bill Medley & Bucky Heard perform Wednesday through Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $39, plus tax and fees. For more information, visit caesars.com/harrahs-las-vegas/shows/ therighteousbrothers.
Bucky Heard (left) and Bill Medley (right) performing together
Although Medley said he knows Hatfield would be “knocked out” by how well Heard sings, that’s not the only reason he chose Heard to help carry on the Righteous Brothers’ legacy. “It’s all about the like factor,” Medley explained. “I had to find someone I wanted to be onstage with again.” The fact that Medley is 75 and still singing “Little Latin Lupe Lu” isn’t lost on him, either. Medley knows he’s truly blessed.

ability to involve audience members in his act is entertaining, it’s the back-and-forth banter he essentially has with himself that makes each performance truly unforgettable There are also a couple of moments during the show where the puppets move and talk without Zerdin so much as touching them—including one bit with Sam and Zerdin’s assistant, Robyn Mellor, where Zerdin isn’t even onstage! These moments truly bring the characters to life and make them seem like they’re actual breathing beings. While Zerdin’s sidesplitting show may be a tough act to follow, two-time Las Vegas Headliner of the Year Frankie Moreno is more than up to the challenge. Performing Tuesday through Saturday at 9 p.m., Moreno’s new show “Under the Influence” showcases the charismatic singersongwriter at his best as he sings a mix of original songs and classic covers. Joined onstage by an 8-piece band and former “Dancing with the Stars” pro Lacey Schwimmer, Moreno is sure to have audiences on their feet by the end of the toe-tapping production. Singing a wide range of songs, including Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds,” Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” and The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” (the latter of which Moreno recorded with world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell), audiences will be amazed by Moreno’s powerful vocals and impressive piano playing skills. The talented showman plays several other instruments during the show, making it easy for ticket holders to see why he has performed in front of sold-out crowds at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. Tickets to see “Paul Zerdin: Mouthing Off” range from $42 to $97 while tickets to “Frankie Moreno – Under the Influence” range from $33 to $88; prices don’t include applicable taxes and fees. A CHARISMATIC CHARACTER MEET LAS VEGAS BLUE MAN DUSTIN FONTAINE By Heather Turk
E
ven if you’ve never seen Blue Man Group before, chances are you know that the show’s three bald and blue stars drum on a variety of instruments throughout the production. One would naturally assume that each Blue Man had drumming experience prior to joining the show, but that’s not always the case. Dustin Fontaine auditioned to be a Blue Man while studying acting in New York City. Despite having no experience as a drummer, he made it to the final callbacks before being cut. When the charismatic actor auditioned again four months

later, he was officially hired as a Blue Man. “By no means am I perfect,” Fontaine said when asked about his drumming capabilities today. “I’m still learning and growing, like any musician. I was lucky, though, as I took drum lessons from (Blue Man Music Trainer) Josh Mathews for a year. I don’t think you necessarily have to have a background in drumming to be a Blue Man, you just have to have a knack for it and be able to pick things up quick.” In the two and a half years Fontaine has been with Blue Man Group (“I’m an actor—I don’t think I’ve ever held a job this long,” he joked), he has performed in both the New York and Boston productions as well as on the South American tour. Now performing in Las Vegas, Fontaine said that Blue Man Group’s new 830seat theater at Luxor Hotel and Casino provides a much more immersive experience than its previous, more spacious theater at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. “There’s a lot of audience interaction during the show,” he explained. “When you have a balcony, audiences feel separated from the Blue Men, but in a more intimate venue no one is safe.” Fontaine said it’s been a “wonderful adjustment” playing in a smaller space, as it’s easier to connect with audiences. “It’s a theater experience unlike any other,” he said. “If you have the opportunity to see Blue Man Group, while you’re in town you should, as our show is vastly different from anything else in Las Vegas. You never see the same show twice.”

Garfunkel and Oates will headline Lipshtick at The Palazzo Theatre July 23
VERY FUNNY FEMALES LIPSHTICK – THE PERFECT SHADE OF STAND UP By Heather Turk
S
ince debuting at The Venetian in 2014, the all-female comedy series Lipshtick – The Perfect Shade of Stand Up has become one of Las Vegas’ hottest tickets, even earning a place last year on Travel + Leisure’s list of the Top Shows in Las Vegas (Lipshtick was ranked No. 2 just behind Cirque du Soleil’s “O”). Given its success, the popular series will be moving on July 23 from the 700-seat Sands Showroom to the more spacious, newly remodeled Palazzo Theatre inside The Palazzo. “The Sands Showroom was a great place for Lipshtick,” said comedienne/talk show host Loni Love (“The Real”), who has been with the series since its first season and will return
for its final show inside the Sands Showroom on July 16. “But when you have people like Roseanne [Barr] and Lisa Lampanelli (who returns to the series on July 30) performing, it helps to have a bigger place.” A supporter of the innovative series since its start, Love prides Lipshtick on giving female comics the exposure they need. “The road is harder for women,” Love said. “It’s not that women aren’t as funny as men, they just have different priorities. For me, I decided not to have children so I could commit to being an entertainer, but there are a lot of women out there I started out with who had a kid or got married, and just can’t commit to the road anymore. It’s nice for people to be able to hear the female point of view, though, and not just one gender.”
Photos courtesy of The Venetian Las Vegas
The series’ diverse lineup of comediennes also gives audiences the chance to hear several different types of comedy, from Love’s signature pop culture commentary to Lampanelli’s equal opportunity brand of insult comedy. Love hopes the series only continues to grow in its new home, and already has several women in mind who she would love to see join Lipshtick. “I would love for Wanda [Sykes] to come over and Marsha Warfield, Kathleen Madigan, Wendy Liebman—I’m always trying to recruit my friends,” Love said. “But I like all of the acts. You can’t beat the lineup of talent.”
Loni Love
In addition to Love and Lampanelli, upcoming Season 4 headliners include Whitney Cummings July 2, Iliza Shlesinger July 9, Garfunkel and Oates July 23 and Cameron Esposito and Sasheer Zamata Aug. 6. “Britney: Piece of Me” features stunning new costumes
BRITNEY’S BACK! WITH A REIMAGINED AND REVITALIZED LAS VEGAS RESIDENCY By Heather Turk
F
rom the moment Britney Spears magically appears onstage in a puff of smoke during her recently revamped Las Vegas residency, “Britney: Piece of Me,” it’s clear to those who have seen the show before that the pop princess isn’t just giving fans another piece of her—she’s giving them everything she’s got! Now in its third year, Spears’ hit Las Vegas residency is stronger than ever. The show was substantially reimagined when Spears decided to extend her contract through December 2017 and returned in February 2016 with new songs, new costumes and a revitalized energy. Spears is enjoying herself on stage. She’s never looked better! The revised set list flows a lot better, too, keeping some of the show’s original highlights and adding in a few new crowd pleasers, like the brilliantly written “If U Seek Amy.” There’s also a fun moment where Spears rides a giant guitar during “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” and a steamy dance number she performs to “Breathe on Me” with her female dancers. While a few select singles have been removed from the 90-minute production, fans get to see a couple of beloved album cuts like “Touch of My Hand” performed live instead.
42
ENTERTAINMENT
In total, fans will hear more than 20 songs during the fast-paced production, including “Circus,” “Womanizer,” “Work B**ch” and “Pretty Girls.” Audiences will still be yelling “Gimme More,” though, when the show is over, as they won’t want it to end! “Britney: Piece of Me” returns to The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Wednesday, Friday and Saturday July 1-13 and Aug. 17-31 at 9 p.m. Tickets range from $59 to $229, plus service fees, with VIP packages also available. For more information, visit britneypieceofme.com.

Photos by Denise Truscello
Ticket holders will continue to hear a few of Spears’ chart-topping hits like never before thanks to some memorable remixes performed during the show, particularly a much darker rock version of “…Baby One More Time” and a softer, more ballad-like version of “Toxic.” The latter eventually leads into the original version of the song once Spears swings off a massive tree to join her dancers onstage after the first chorus. That’s not the only time Spears takes flight during the show, either; there’s also a beautiful dream-like segment during “Everytime”
where Spears is suspended high above the stage dressed like an angel.
People have always come to Vegas looking for a sign. Gangsters, pranksters, vixens, visionaries, rascals, ranchers. They all came, along with thousands of ordinary people with either a fortune to find or nothing to lose. They all made history. Las Vegas history. Come take a walk through it.

SUMMER NIGHTS ZOWIE BOWIE TURNS UP THE HEAT AT ONE OF DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS’ COOLEST VENUES By Heather Turk
O
ne of Las Vegas’ hottest acts is making a splash this summer with a new weekly residency visitors won’t want to miss.
Performing at Downtown Grand Las Vegas Hotel & Casino’s 35,000-square-foot urban rooftop pool retreat, Citrus, Zowie Bowie has been a staple of the Entertainment Capital of the World for more than a decade. The perfect addition to the venue’s summer entertainment lineup, Zowie Bowie brings their high-energy mix of dance, hip-hop and Top 40 hits to Citrus’ poolside stage every Friday from 10 p.m. until midnight.
“I think Zowie Bowie is the perfect type of party band to have at this incredible poolside venue,” said lead singer Chris Phillips, who along with vocalist Nieve Malandra and a 4-piece band make up Zowie Bowie. “This is an amazing venue where people can come and party, swim, drink, eat and dance all under the stars and lights of downtown Las Vegas. It’s very rare in this town to be able to go to a club, experience a live, fun party band and mingle with your friends with no cover charge. It has all the elements of a great night out in Las Vegas—plus you get to breathe fresh air.” No stranger to performing in downtown Las Vegas, Zowie Bowie performs weekly on Fremont Street Experience, too. Although the band has played almost everywhere around town, Phillips said there’s nothing like performing for an audience downtown. “They are so appreciative and love to have a good time,” he said. “They’re a wide range of people from all over the world coming to experience what Vegas is, was and hopefully will always be about.”

RIVER TOWN OF FUN LAUGHLIN IS HOME TO ANNUAL EVENTS AND A STEADY STREAM OF HEADLINERS By Jackie Brett
S
easonal events and big name entertainment are great reasons to visit the desert resort oasis of Laughlin, Nev., tucked alongside the mighty Colorado River and facing Bullhead City, Ariz. Located just 90 miles south of Las Vegas, this 24-hour small town of little more than 7,000 residents has nine big casino resorts with around 10,000 rooms.
Dazzling Rockets Over The River
Lovely Laughlin along the Colorado River 66
ENTERTAINMENT
In August, the Colorado River is the focus of another popular event. The 10th annual River Regatta will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13. Each year a different theme is selected. This year, thousands of pirates will invade the bi-state water extravaganza. More than 30,000 water enthusiasts will take one giant colorful excursion down the river in adorned inner tubes, kayaks, canoes and on decorated parade-type rafts and floats. Launching takes place from different sites on both the Arizona and Nevada sides of the river. Contests and pre- and post-parties happen throughout the weekend. Entertainment, ranging from the Edgewater’s weekend comedy shows to the sexy male Chippendales revue stopping at the Fiesta Showroom at Harrah’s on July 22-23, is abundant in Laughlin. The Riverside Resort has a steady lineup of shows in Don’s Celebrity Theatre and often the best tribute artists in the business deliver outstanding performances such as “Neil Diamond The Tribute Starring Rob Garrett” Aug. 3-7 followed by “Elvis in Hawaii Starring Don Rose” Aug. 16-21. The Edgewater’s E Center has booked some powerful names on Saturdays this summer. Leading off is the six-man group Styx on July 16. Two-time Grammy award-winning country singersongwriter Dwight Yoakam will mesmerize the audience on July 23. Three Dog Night will appear on Aug. 6, while Wynonna and her band The Big Noise will close out summer on Aug. 27. Laughlin is easily accessible from Southern California, Arizona and Nevada, with daily bus excursions offered from many surrounding cities. For more information, go to visitlaughlin.com.

Annual special events happening all year long are a significant part of Laughlin’s charm. Every July, it’s time for a dazzling pyrotechnic allAmerican celebration to light up the night sky above the river. The 26th annual Rockets Over The River fireworks display will be held twice, once on Saturday, July 2 and again on Monday, July 4. The rockets shot into the dark desert sky are accompanied by patriotic music simulcast by

he mighty, ever-flowing Colorado River and its many tributaries have carved out an incredible water recreation paradise in the Southwest. In Mesa, there are two rivers that converge just north of the city’s border as well as a connection of lakes that allow for every summer water sport imaginable. Here, yoga lovers can practice their flow and test their skills on a stand up paddleboard (SUP). No Snow SUP offers weekly yoga sessions on both the Lower Salt River and nearby Canyon Lake. The 60-minute guided classes promise a unique balancing act, all set to the motion of the lake’s rolling tide.

Views of the majestic canyon walls are prevalent here and the beachfront is a popular area for swimming, floating and catching some rays. Kayakers in particular appreciate the convenient water entrance and exit that only a beach can provide. Though this North Phoenix resort boasts a lively, stylish casino floor, it’s the delicious food and scenic views that easily lure guests to Orange Sky, the fine dining establishment that sits atop the venue’s 15th floor. Its floor-to-ceiling windows allow panoramic views of the desert landscape, as well as the bold orange sunsets that inspired the restaurant’s name. ICE CREAM PARLORS WITH RETRO FLAIR By Amy Young
I
t’s true, we all scream for ice cream! It’s one of the great unifiers in life. It turns frowns upside down, it provides cool relief on a hot day and it comes in so many flavors that even the pickiest folks are satisfied. Ice cream parlors are rooted in Americana and many of today’s shops like to acknowledge that history, infusing their stores with nostalgic items and retro décor. These three Phoenix area ice cream parlors will take you back in time while feeding your sweet tooth.
MARY COYLE OL’ FASHION ICE CREAM AND YOGURT
This classic ice cream parlor in Phoenix created much sadness a couple of years ago when they closed their longtime location. Since the 1950’s, Mary Coyle became more than
a place to go for delicious, handcrafted ice cream. It was a destination for celebration, from birthdays to team victories. Thankfully, they have a new spot in north central Phoenix (5823 N 7th St.) and are back in business, offering their 16 percent butterfat ice cream, made on-site, in flavors like... salted caramel cashew, fresh banana, burgundy cherry and maple walnut— as rich and satisfying as ever. marycoyle.net
SPARKY’S OLD TOWN CREAMERY This Tempe ice cream shop is in the Mill Avenue District, steps from the Arizona State University campus. Sparky’s makes small batches of fresh ice cream with a low sweetness level, to allow the flavors to stand out. Some options include lemon poppy seed muffin, cake batter and Funny Farm, which brings together brown sugar, maple and bacon. If you like to mix sweet eats, try a cookie sandwich. Sparky’s lets you pick your choice of ice cream and squishes it between two hearty chocolate chip cookies. sparkyscreamery.com

Petersen ice cream originated in Chicago in the early 1900s when Danish immigrant Hans Petersen opened a shop there to sell his 18 percent butterfat ice cream, mixed with different flavorings, fruits and nuts. Ownership has changed, but the quality ice cream recipe has been preserved. Arizona residents and visitors can now enjoy it, too, at Petersen’s Ice Cream and Cafe in Gilbert. From the old-fashioned store sign to the pink and blue pastel furniture, this spot feels inviting and homey. Large juicy strawberries swimming in vanilla ice cream is an option, alongside sinful delights like the Turtle, made with chocolate ice cream, rich caramel and butter roasted pecans. petersensicecream.com

DISCOVER NEW FAMILY THRILLS AT SEVERAL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA THEME PARKS By Heather Turk
T
here’s no better place for families to make lasting memories together than at one of Southern California’s thrilling theme parks. This summer, three area parks are giving guests even more to enjoy thanks to awesome new attractions visitors of all ages will want to experience.
For families who would rather work on their ninja skills than their fancy footwork, NINJAGO The Ride at LEGOLAND California (legoland. com/california) features technology never before seen at any North American theme park. Part of the Carlsbad resort’s new LEGO NINJAGO World, passengers on the interactive 3-D ride are guided through 13 different scenes as they demonstrate their ninja skills by using their hands instead of a hand-held device to throw fire balls, shock waves, and ice and lightning bolts at various villains. Cool 4-D elements are featured during the ride as well, adding to the immersive experience. Families visiting California this summer can now also travel to Hogsmeade thanks to “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Universal Studios Hollywood (universalstudioshollywood. com). In addition to dining on fabulous Fish and Chips at Three Broomsticks, watching a wand choose its wizard at Ollivanders and drinking Butterbeer, one of the attraction’s biggest draws is the groundbreaking “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” ride. Guests make their way through Hogwarts castle before soaring over its grounds, participating in a Quidditch match and even escaping dreaded Dementors. A mix of 3-D effects and larger-than-life-sized animatronics, this impressive motion-based ride is sure to cast a spell on everyone who rides it!

At Disney California Adventure (disneyland. disney.go.com/destinations/disney-californiaadventure), family members can go dancing with 20 of Luigi’s cousins at Cars Land’s newest attraction, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. The former site of Luigi’s Flying Tires, the attraction lets guests hop aboard miniature Italian roadsters as each car performs choreographed dance moves across a trackless “dance floor.” Since each roadster has his or her own routine, each ride is different based on which car riders choose and which song is playing. That rare attraction that’s just as fun to watch as it is to
ride, guests might see the cars dancing to such classic songs as “Mambo Italiano” and “Eh, Cumpari” while they wait to board their vehicle. Just remember to buckle up, as you never know what moves Luigi’s cousins are about to bust out!

NATURE’S JEWELS THREE SPECTACULAR GARDENS ON OAHU By Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi
P
ockets of pristine beauty abound on Oahu, Hawaii’s most developed and densely populated island. Allegiant travelers will delight in exploring these three botanical gardens.
Opened in 1931, this is Hawaii’s oldest botanical garden and the only one listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. When its namesake, Mary Foster, died in 1930, she bequeathed her 5.5-acre estate to the City and County of Honolulu with the stipulation that it was to be maintained as a public garden. Over the decades, the garden grew in size through the purchase and gifts of land. It now occupies 13.5 acres just outside the core of downtown Honolulu. Highlights include 23 of the 1,000-plus trees throughout Hawaii deemed “exceptional” because of their age, rarity, location, size, aesthetic quality, endemic status, or historical and cultural significance. Visit Foster Botanical Garden (808.522.7066) at 50 North Vineyard Boulevard.
WAHIAWA BOTANICAL GARDEN
Long ago, the roar of rough seas could supposedly be heard from a plateau between the Waianae and Koolau Mountains. Fittingly, its name was Wahiawa, meaning “place of noise.” Today, Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a tranquil, 27-acre wonderland that started in the 1930s as an experimental arboretum for the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association. In 1950, the City and County of Honolulu assumed management

HAWAII
Represented here are nearly 2,000 species of plants and trees. Notable are 100-foot-tall ficus, kauri and eucalyptus and a giant orchid plant that stands 7 feet tall, measures 12 feet in diameter and weighs 200 pounds. Wahiawa Botanical Garden (808.621.7321) is located at 1396 California Avenue.
HO‘OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN
As its Hawaiian name suggests, this 400-acre garden is indeed “a peaceful refuge.” Designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood protection for lush windward Oahu, it opened in 1982 and features plantings arranged by geographical regions, including Polynesia, Australia, Africa, India, Malaysia, tropical America and the Philippines. Most of the species were gathered in the wild from their place of origin. Keep an eye out for the 26 “canoe plants” brought by Hawaii’s first settlers around 500 A.D. These include kalo (taro) from which poi is made. Ho‘omaluhia is a popular spot for camping and catch-and-release fishing in its 32-acre lake. Find Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden (808.233.7323) at 45-680 Luluku Road. For more information, check out honolulu.gov/ parks/hbg.html.

LIP SMACKING LAS VEGAS TASTING THE BEST OF LAS VEGAS IN ONE BITE By Justin Ralenkotter
I
n addition to being a world-renown entertainment destination, Las Vegas is a major culinary hub. And the variety of dining options can seem daunting—especially if you’re only spending a couple of days in town. Lip Smacking Foodie Tours makes exploring Las Vegas’ food scene accessible and easy. Taking a unique approach to food in Las Vegas, Lip Smacking showcases not only the best restaurants, but also the best dishes those restaurants have to offer. “Las Vegas has some of the best culinary options in the world, which can be overwhelming,” said Donald Contursi, president of Lip Smacking Foodie Tours. “To get the best meal in Las Vegas, I realized you would have to experience the most memorable signature dishes from all the best restaurants.” Lip Smacking offers food lovers three tours from which to choose. Sunseeker recently experienced the afternoon Strip tour stopping at four acclaimed Las Vegas hotspots.
FIRST STOP: HERRINGBONE
Herringbone at the Aria offers social dining and sustainable, high-quality meats and seafood. Seated on the patio, we sampled the seasoned, delicious tuna poke and meatball slider—made from a 100-year old family recipe. Our tasting ended with the tender and spicy wings, a must-try at this dynamic restaurant.

VACATIONS
Also at the Aria, this famed Mexican eatery serves up authentic Baja cuisine with fresh ingredients. Our group tried a variety of fresh salsas along with signature enchiladas. With a combination of chicken, Dungeness crab and sautéed shrimp, each enchilada packed a unique and flavorful punch that will leave you hungry for more
THIRD STOP: ESTIATORIO MILOS
Estiatorio Milos at the Cosmopolitan offers, arguably, the freshest seafood in Las Vegas with carefully prepared Greek-inspired dishes. The Greek Salad features robust, vine-ripened tomatoes with barrel-aged feta cheese. The grilled octopus was tender and delicious, but the table favorite was the Milos Special: fried zucchini and eggplant slices with tzatziki and Kefalograviera cheese.
FOURTH STOP: HEXX
Hexx at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel is the only location in Nevada creating chocolate from bean to bar. Each type of chocolate is crafted to showcase the flavor profiles unique to each bean. After a tour of the chocolate kitchen, our group tried the signature Aztec Cake—moist Venezuelan chocolate cake pieces, spiced gnash and almonds. Allegiant passengers receive special rates on Lip Smacking tours when booking through Allegiant.com. For more information, visit vegasfoodietour.com.

HAROLD “TIM” WRIGHT
John Gordon ,BLI Stations Supervisor
ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT JOHN GORDON, BLI STATIONS SUPERVISOR Sunseeker: How long have you been working for Allegiant? John: I recently celebrated my five-year anniversary. Sunseeker: What do you do at Allegiant? John: I am a stations supervisor in Bellingham, Wash. (BLI). I started my career with Allegiant in 2011. In 2012, I transferred to headquarters in Las Vegas where I was a stations instructor and auditor. During that time, I was able to travel the country and visit many of our airports and travelers. In the fall of 2015, I had the opportunity to move back to the beautiful Bellingham area. As a supervisor, I utilize everything that I have learned over the years to help make travel for our passengers safe, efficient and affordable.
Photos by John Gordon
Sunseeker: What about your job gets you excited to go to work? John: Seeing our travelers’ excitement for the vacation they are about to embark on is always fun for me. Also, working with other team members day in and day out is truly rewarding. BLI has an amazing crew that goes above and beyond every day, rain or shine.
Sunseeker: Out of all of the great Allegiant destinations, where was your favorite vacation? John: I was able to take a vacation to San Antonio through Allegiant. It was an amazing trip and wouldn’t have been possible without them. In addition to walking through the Alamo, you cannot experience San Antonio without doing the River Walk. They have so many great restaurants, bars and shops to keep you busy. I don’t miss the humidity, though, it did a number on my perm. Sunseeker: Is there a special memory from working in BLI you would like to share with our travelers? John: I have so many great memories! I love the excitement of new aircraft types and route locations. It’s remarkable being able to watch this company grow. Being able to travel around the country has given me the opportunity to visit numerous states that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. Sunseeker: If you could travel anywhere in the United States on vacation at this moment, where would you go? John: I’d love to see more of the Pacific Northwest, my own backyard! The area has so much to offer and I have barely been able to scratch the surface. Sunseeker: Do you have a “locals’ tip” for Allegiant passengers traveling to the Bellingham area? John: If you’re like me and enjoy a good beer, you’re in the right spot. Bellingham has several outstanding breweries with great beer, delicious food and an amazing atmosphere. Taking in the views of the bay is never a bad idea either. SPOTLIGHT

A NEW LEASE FOR MAKE-A-WISH® SOUTHERN NEVADA ALLEGIANT DONATES NEW OFFICE SPACE TO MAKE-A-WISH® SOUTHERN NEVADA
T
his past April, on World Wish Day, Allegiant and Make-A-Wish® came together to mark an important milestone in their three-year relationship. Beginning in January 2017, Make-AWish® Southern Nevada will occupy 7,500 square feet of office space, making Allegiant’s Las Vegas offices the new home and headquarters for the organization. The new offices will allow the chapter to continue and grow their wish-granting capabilities. The site will serve as the host location for volunteer training, meetings and a place of support for families of children receiving wishes. “We are humbled and ecstatic with this generous gesture from Allegiant,” said Caroline Ciocca, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada. “This partnership demonstrates true collaboration. Allegiant is providing us with an opportunity to reduce our overhead expenses by donating office space—which will allow us to grant more wishes. By bringing our work onto their campus, Allegiant employees will have more opportunities to get involved with our mission. It’s collaboration at its best. We are grateful and very excited to take our partnership to a new level.”
A celebratory event took place at the site of the new space on April 29, World Wish Day. Allegiant CEO Maurice J. Gallagher and Brian Davis, vice president of marketing, along with Caroline Ciocca, joined Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman for the announcement. “Allegiant is thrilled to make office space available to Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada, an organization that does so much to uplift the lives of those who need it most and engage the whole community in feel-good initiatives that promote positivity and giving back,” said Maurice J. Gallagher. “We’re excited to welcome the Make-A-Wish® team to our campus.”

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR
VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.
