Progressive American Chef Charlie Palmer
PROGRESSIVE CHEF, TIMELESS FARE CHARLIE PALMER REIGNS AS ONE OF LAS VEGAS’ TOP CHEFS By Heather Turk
O
ver the years, Las Vegas has evolved into a culinary destination. Once known for its 99-cent shrimp cocktails, the city now boasts restaurants from nearly every celebrity chef imaginable. In a place populated with celebrity chef restaurants, though, Progressive American Chef Charlie Palmer has cooked up two unforgettable dining experiences that have withstood the test of time and the heat of the competition: Charlie Palmer Steak at Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas and Aureole inside Mandalay Bay. Since opening in 1999, both restaurants have made a name for themselves, thanks to Palmer’s fabulous fare, while still serving up a dining experience that’s uniquely their own. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the non-gaming Four Seasons Hotel, Charlie Palmer Steak offers diners an innovative steakhouse experience complete
with succulent cuts of beef and savory side dishes that are truly a cut above the rest. Meanwhile, the Adam Tihany-designed Aureole offers guests dinner and a show, whether they’re dining in Swan Court soaking up the beautiful view of the waterfall on the patio or watching the restaurant’s famed wine angels take flight as they retrieve a bottle of vino from the four-story wine tower. Visitors will find an array of steak and seafood favorites at Charlie Palmer Steak, like the caramelized garlic NY Strip Steak and Grilled Swordfish, alongside such perfectly prepared dishes as the Slow Braised Wagyu Shortribs and California Burrata Cheese with roasted beets. Hungry for a deal? Ask for the Cut of the Week menu, a three-course meal served with bottomless glass wine pairings for just $58 per person. At Aureole guests can savor such flavorful fare as the 8-ounce Peppercorn Crusted Filet Mignon and Ora King Salmon. Other mouthwatering must-tries include the Snake River Farm Wagyu Beef Carpaccio and Palmer’s signature Charlie’s Onion Soup made with foie gras and truffles.

The NY Strip Steak at Charlie Palmer Steak
Of course, no meal is complete at either establishment without one of Executive Pastry Chef Nicole Erle’s delightful desserts, like the zesty Lemon Meringue Parfait at Charlie Palmer Steak or the light Cinnamon Sugar Funnel Cake at Aureole. While the food at both restaurants is incomparable, the service is truly unmatched. Servers are attentive without ever once feeling intrusive, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
The Swan Court dining area inside Aureole offers guests a gorgeous patio view
Charlie Palmer Steak and Aureole are open for dinner Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit charliepalmer.com. DINING

T
he culinary scene in Las Vegas continues to flourish thanks to several recent restaurant additions on and off the Strip. From coastal favorites to a world-famous bakery café, here’s a sampling of the new fare and flair in Las Vegas.
CARBONE AT ARIA RESORT AND CASINO
The perfect place to grab a bite, this quickservice, Korean-owned bakery café serves some of the freshest sandwiches, pastries and desserts in town. There’s something for everyone to relish on the extensive menu, from the flaky Ham & Cheese Croissant (which can be heated upon request) to the palate-pleasing Maple Bacon & Cheese Melt. Whatever you decide on, be sure to try the tasty Peach Iced Tea and indulge in a slice of the light and moist Chocolate Chiffon Cake. Once you’ve received your order, head upstairs to the eatery’s private balcony overlooking St. Mark’s Square to watch the Streetmosphere performers or catch up on some work while you dine. grandcanalshoppes.com
KILLER SHRIMP AT TOWN SQUARE LAS VEGAS
Famous for its spicy broth—a family guarded secret that takes 10 hours to prepare—this popular California eatery serves up more than just fresh seafood for lunch and dinner. While seafood fans will want to try the Killer Shrimp & Lobster, a variation of the restaurant’s namesake dish with shrimp, lobster tail and sweet corn served in the signature broth, there are several dishes for meat lovers to savor like the tender Slow Braised Beef Short Rib. Other delectable dishes include the New England-style Clam Chowder and well-seasoned Killer Spice fries. Hungry for a deal? Paying homage to the Italian-American restaurants of the mid-20th century, New York’s critically acclaimed Carbone offers guests a dining experience unlike any other. With “Captains” (waiters) wearing burgundy tuxedos, red-curtained semi-private booths, oversized menus and a variety of dishes prepared tableside, it’s quickly becoming one of Las Vegas’ most buzzed about new dinner spots thanks to its flair and fare. Whether you start your meal with the Prosciutto & Mozz, which is prepared tableside so that the fresh-made mozzarella can be cut in front of you, or the flavorful Carpaccio Piemontese, nothing on the menu disappoints. hile most people think of visiting a buffet for breakfast or dinner, the lunch spreads at some of Las Vegas’ best buffets are worth checking out, too. Diners can feast upon an array of delectable items, many of which are offered during the evening hours as well, at a fraction of the dinner price, guaranteeing guests more bang for their buck.
BACCHANAL BUFFET AT CAESARS PALACE
Arguably Las Vegas’ best lunch buffet, guests never leave this smorgasbord hungry. Open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the carving station alone is worth the price of admission, serving every type of meat imaginable: prime rib, honey ham, oven-roasted turkey, slab bacon, even a variety of sausages.
By H. Wadowski
There’s also a made-to-order crepes station and a street taco station cooking up fresh carne asada, pork al pastor and pollo marinado tacos. Other lunchtime favorites include the fried chicken, beef sliders and Jonah crab claws. Guests can wash everything down with a refreshing bottle of agua fresca offered on the buffet line, with flavors like mango and tamarindo. caesars.com/caesarspalace/restaurants/bacchanal-buffet
THE BUFFET AT WYNN LAS VEGAS
This bountiful buffet reopened to guests in November, boasting an expanded menu and a more inviting atmosphere. Serving lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can indulge in such delicious dishes as the spaghetti and meatballs (made from Frank Sinatra’s family recipe), made-to-order street tacos and sushi. There’s also a made-toorder ramen station where guests can choose their broth (tonkotsu, chicken shoyu or vegan miso) and build their own ramen bowl from an assortment of garnishes, including sweet yellow corn and pork belly. wynnlasvegas.com/Dining/ CasualDining/TheBuffet
SEASONS BUFFET AT SILVERTON CASINO HOTEL Bacchanal Buffet’s bountiful smorgasbord
Seasons Buffet offers a selection of pizzas and calzones for lunch
Well worth the trip off-Strip, this lodge-like buffet offers a savory (and affordable!) lunchtime spread Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests can enjoy such flavorful fare as the pulled pork, grilled veggies and made-to-order fish tacos as well as freshly carved slow-cooked brisket and roasted turkey. Visitors can create their own pasta dish at the pasta station, choosing type of noodles (penne, fettuccini or linguini) and sauce (Alfredo, marinara or Bolognese) in addition to what mix-ins, with options that include mushrooms, olives, peppers and tomatoes. Grab a warm garlic bread stick to enjoy with your creation—the fresh-baked bread pairs perfectly with pasta! silvertoncasino.com/ dine/vegas-best-buffet DINING

he Las Vegas Strip may be popular with foodies thanks to its world-class restaurants, many of which can’t be found anyplace else, but sometimes you find yourself hungry for a familiar favorite. Luckily, several well-known restaurants have recently popped up on the Strip with new locations and even new concepts.
This innovative Italian eatery from Buca di Beppo boasts some of the family-style favorites the restaurant chain is known for, including the palate-pleasing Prosciutto Stuffed Chicken and Mozzarella Garlic Bread, as well a menu of café staples like build-your-own burgers. Open

Sure to be a popular spot with sports fans, Buffalo Wild Wings’ first Strip location features 63 HDTVs, including three stadium-sized TVs by the bar. Open 24 hours, guests can dine on the sports bar’s award-winning chicken wings without breaking the bank, as prices are comparable to any Buffalo Wild Wings found offStrip. While the wings are plenty flavorful, if you can handle the heat, be sure to try them with the newly reformulated Blazin’ sauce, which is now made with ghost pepper. Other tasty items great for sharing include the Cheddar Cheese Curds and Potato Wedges flavored with sour cream and chive seasoning. miraclemileshopslv.com

ince opening in October of 2014, Downtown Summerlin—a 106-acre shopping, dining and entertainment complex near Red Rock Resort—has become one of the city’s hottest places to dine thanks to its array of appealing restaurants. Here’s just a taste of what the popular local hangout has to offer.
Photo of picanha by Mona Shield Payne; scallops courtesy of CRAVE American Kitchen & Sushi Bar; pot roast courtesy of Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar
CRAVE AMERICAN KITCHEN & SUSHI BAR
The first restaurant to open in Downtown Summerlin, this delectable eatery is still one of the complex’s best. Open for lunch and dinner, guests can feast upon an extensive menu of innovative dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients as well as a selection
of creative specialty rolls. Dinner favorites include the Half Roasted Chicken served with coconut jasmine rice, grilled pineapple relish, fried plantains and a jalapeño orange glaze, and the signature Scallops served over a seasonal risotto. Whatever you decide on, don’t forget an order of the tasty Bacon & Cheddar Tater Tots for the table—they’re sure to be a real crowd pleaser! craveamerica. com/locations/las-vegas

Come hungry to this Brazilian steakhouse, which offers a never-ending assortment of fire-roasted meats for lunch and dinner. From the signature picanha (the prime part of top sirloin) lightly seasoned with rock salt to the juicy leg of lamb, nothing the gaucho chefs bring out to the table disappoints. While it can be easy to fill up on items from the gourmet Market Table, like the flavorful brown sugar and black pepper bacon, as well as the scrumptious side dishes, be sure to save room for the main event, as you’ll want to try as many meats as you can. The linguiça (pork sausage) is especially delicious! fogodechao. com/location/las-vegas

DINNER AND A SHOW PERFECTED THREE UNFORGETTABLE LAS VEGAS DINNER THEATER PRODUCTIONS By Heather Turk
T
here’s arguably no better place to enjoy dinner and a show than the Entertainment Capital of the World. In fact, there are a number of productions in Las Vegas that combine the fabulous fare and exciting entertainment into one unforgettable dinner theater experience.
A celebration of the islands, this high-energy production features a talented cast of exotic performers who transport guests from the desert to the tropics as they sing and dance along to a mix of Hawaiian music and pop favorites (think Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin). Not your traditional luau, there’s hula dancing, drumming, slap dancing, comedy—even an Elvis Presley tribute artist! Guests can watch the production by itself or while savoring authentic Hawaiian cuisine, with flavorful entrée options that include the Teriyaki Flank Steak and Pina Colada Chicken. islandheatdinnershow.com
“TONY N’ TINA’S WEDDING” AT BALLY’S LAS VEGAS
It’s every bride and groom’s worst nightmare— feuding families, a priest who’s drunk, the bride’s ex-boyfriend showing up to the ceremony—but this interactive dinner show turns someone else’s nutty nuptials into a sidesplitting evening ticket holders won’t soon forget. Audience members serve as wedding guests during the comical production, acting like distant relatives as they chat and dance with the cast. Since you never know who you might be seated next to—the pregnant maid of honor, the bride’s flamboyant brother— each ticket holder is guaranteed a different experience. Guests also enjoy a delicious dinner, complete with salad, wedding cake and a buffet of Italian favorites such as chicken Parmesan and baked ziti, during the crazy ceremony. caesars.com/ballys-las-vegas
“MARRIAGE CAN BE MURDER” AT THE D LAS VEGAS
Las Vegas’ longest-running dinner theater production, this hilarious whodunit has ticket holders guessing to the very end. With actors planted among the audience, guests never know if the people sitting at their table are actual tourists or part of the cast—especially since cast members change every three months! Guests feast upon a mouthwatering three-course meal, including their choice of chicken Marsala (“Foul Play”), beef brisket (“Dead Meat”) or pasta primavera (“Meatless Mayhem”) for the entrée, while people drop like flies around them. Just be careful not to laugh too hard at the show’s quick-witted hostess and 18

Elton John in “The Million Dollar Piano”
THREE ICONS, ONE LAS VEGAS STAGE CELINE DION, ROD STEWART AND ELTON JOHN RETURN TO THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE
T
hree of Las Vegas’ most popular resident artists return to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in March and April, including Celine Dion who forever changed the Entertainment Capital of the World when her first resident show, “A New Day…” premiered inside the venue in 2003.
Photos by Denise Truscello
Continuing her second hit residency, “Celine,” March 1-2, 4-5, 8-9 and 11-12, Dion proves she’s still the queen of Las Vegas. Backed by 31 musicians comprised of a full orchestra and band, Dion performs several of her greatest hits as well as some covers during the elegant production, including songs by Prince and the Bee Gees. Audiences will have tears in their eyes as she sings such emotional numbers as “Because You Loved Me” and “The Power of Love,” which Dion admitted during a press conference back in August had “become different songs” since her husband, who sadly passed away on Jan. 14, 2016, began battling throat cancer. “The words come alive more than ever before,” Dion said. Even though the songs have taken on new meaning for the singer, Dion’s vocals remain as pitch perfect as ever, resulting in a powerful, heartfelt performance. While Dion may be a tough act to follow, fellow superstar Rod Stewart is more than worthy of the challenge. Bringing his residency, “Rod Stewart: The Hits,” back to The Colosseum March 19-20, 23, 25-26 and 29 as well as April 1-2 and 5, the high-energy production features timeless tracks, such as “Maggie May” and “You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim),” that have defined Stewart’s five decades-long career. Not only does the production showcase Stewart’s signature raspy vocals, but it also lets him show off his impressive soccer skills as he kicks autographed soccer balls into the audience during one of his final numbers.
By Heather Turk
Once Stewart leaves the stage, Elton John closes out the month of April with his second residency inside The Colosseum: “The Million Dollar Piano.” Performing April 16-17, 19-20, 22-23, 26-27 and 29-30, the production features the legendary showman at his best as he performs some of his biggest hits, including “Rocket Man” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” while playing the show’s namesake piano. This engineering marvel boasts more than 68 LED video screens created by Yamaha. Show times for all three productions are at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit thecolosseum.com.

THE MAGIC NEVER STOPS PENN & TELLER CONTINUE TO AMAZE AUDIENCES WITH INNOVATIVE ILLUSIONS By Heather Turk
H
aving recently celebrated their 23rd anniversary in Las Vegas and their 15th anniversary at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Penn & Teller are one of the Entertainment Capital of the World’s hottest tickets—and they’ve worked hard for that honor. “The conventional wisdom in Las Vegas is that you don’t need to change anything [in your show] because the audience always changes,” Penn Jillette told Sunseeker. “You develop your show on the road, nail things down and then you come to Las Vegas and play golf. But Teller and I didn’t get into show business to get out of show business. I mean, why would we play golf when we could be writing a show? If you were to tell my 16-year-old self that he would be living in Las Vegas, have his own crew and a seemingly infinite amount of money—at least to a 16 year old—to produce new stuff, he would say he would want to work all day, every day to create new stuff. And it turns out 16-year-old me thinks the same as 60-year-old me.” Always giving fans something different to enjoy, Penn & Teller constantly have complex new illusions that they’re working on in the pipeline—even though after more than 40 years of performing together, Jillette realizes that they don’t need any more material.
24
FEATURE STORY
“We have four hours of material for a 90-minute show,” Jillette said. “We don’t need to work on any new illusions. The only reason to do anything new now is because it’s hard. The stuff we’re doing today is the hardest stuff anyone has ever done. When Teller and I get to talking about something new, if either one of us pitches something that’s easy and fast it’s immediately off the table.” Not surprisingly, one of Penn & Teller’s newest illusions, where they dress a cow like an elephant and then make her vanish onstage while surrounded by members of the audience, is one of the hardest they’ve ever done. “We’re really proud of that one,” Jillette said. “We worked every week on it for six years and it takes three minutes. I’d say on average we spend a year on every minute in the show, which is something we couldn’t do 30 years ago. Our bit where we saw a woman in half took twoand-a-half years for two minutes [of material].” In addition to Elsie the African Pigmy Spotted Elephant, Penn & Teller have recently brought a couple of other new illusions to the Las Vegas stage, including a minute-long trick involving an egg and a camera and a fun bit where Teller pulls a rabbit out of a hat. Jillette promised
One of Penn & Teller’s newest tricks, Rabbit, features Teller pulling a rabbit out of a hat
fans could see “a metric ton” of new material being added to the show this March, as the duo prepares to tape the third season of their hit show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” at the Rio AllSuite Hotel & Casino in April.
Photos of Penn & Teller in vests by Frances George; Rabbit and One-Minute Egg illusions by Joan Marcus
“We always end every episode of the TV show with a Penn & Teller bit, so we’ve done 26 bits to close the show now,” Jillette said. “We need 13 bits that haven’t been done on ‘Fool Us’ before, so we’ll be throwing stuff into the Vegas show left and right (to work on).”
Penn & Teller perform Saturday through Wednesday at 9 p.m. inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Tickets start at $75, plus tax and fees. While the show is dark April 3-15, fans visiting Las Vegas during that time period can attend a taping of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” for free. Visit the Rio box office for more information. For tickets to see Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas production, call 702.777.2782 or visit riolasvegas.com.
Many of the illusions, Jillette noted, have never been done on the Las Vegas stage before. In fact, some of the tricks haven’t been performed in 30 years! Among the illusions Las Vegas audiences will be treated to is a new interactive card trick called Love Ritual and one of Penn & Teller’s classic bits, the Domestication of Animals, that involves Teller making balloon animals while Jillette plays the bass. Jillette said the duo will also be performing their elaborate King of Animal Traps, where he tells the story of how Teller got his start (“It’s not true,” Jillette pointed out) in first person so that audiences think he’s talking about himself as Teller sets up an assortment of frightening animal traps, then collects the food from them—unharmed—to make a sandwich. Audiences will get to see Penn & Teller’s controversial Cut and Restored Snake bit, too, where the two cut apart a snake and then magically put it back together—an illusion which, Jillette proudly pointed out, received the most complaints over anything they’ve ever performed before on “Saturday Night Live.”

AN ANGEL OF MAGIC CRISS ANGEL CONTINUES TO REVOLUTIONIZE HIS HIT LAS VEGAS SHOW By H. Wadowski
A
mesmerizing spectacle boasting more than 40 illusions, Cirque du Soleil’s hit show “CRISS ANGEL Believe” is all about making audiences believe in the impossible. Magician of the Century Criss Angel gives his all during the fast-paced production, which features countless pieces of magic that happen in the blink of an eye. “One trick that always blows people’s minds is one of my newer illusions, where I’m floating onstage, vanish in midair and then reappear sitting in the middle of the audience,” Angel told Sunseeker.“ The person next to me always screams, as they don’t know what happened to the person sitting next to them moments ago.”
“We want to re-energize the show for audiences and give them a reason to come see it again.” Nadal encourages fans to see “Believe” in its current incarnation, though, so that audiences can “see where it is now and where Criss is taking it.” “He’s really pushing the boundaries of what people have seen onstage before,” Nadal stated. “CRISS ANGEL Believe” runs Wednesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. with additional performances select nights at 9:30 p.m. Tickets start at $59, plus tax and fees. For more information, visit cirquedusoleil.com.
Angel prides himself on performing mind-blowing illusions audiences can’t see anyplace else, like his jaw-dropping take on sawing a woman in half, which fans might recall seeing on his A&E series. “No one has ever done this version of cutting a woman in half,” Angel said. “There are no boxes or cloths of any kind, just like when I did it in the park. A lot of people don’t believe that I can do what they saw on TV—they think it’s trick photography—but then when they see it for themselves, they can’t believe their eyes.”
“About 60 to 70 percent of the show will be different,” said Jerry Nadal, senior vice president for Cirque du Soleil’s resident shows division. 32

While some of the bigger elements from the show in its past incarnations have been removed, like the giant balls that fell from the ceiling during its days at Monte
Carlo Resort and Casino, repeat ticket holders will still be awed. The new show plays almost like a collection of Blue Man Group’s greatest hits. Longtime fan favorites such as “Feast”, where the Blue Men woo an unsuspecting ticket holder with a Twinkie, are featured alongside relatively new crowd pleasers, like when the Blue Men try to take a selfie with the audience. Some of Blue Man Group’s most inventive instruments remain in the production as well, including the Smoke Drums that emit ethereal rings out into the audience when struck. Longtime fans will also be excited to see the return of Blue Man Group’s beloved bit involving Cap’n Crunch cereal. A nonstop joy from start to finish, Blue Man Group’s new Luxor production truly hits all the right notes. Blue Man Group performs nightly at 7 and 9:30 p.m. (dark March 2) with an additional 4 p.m. matinee March 24-30. Allegiant passengers receive special offers when they purchase their tickets onboard. SOMETHING NEW IS BREWIN’ LOCAL CRAFT BREWER TENAYA CREEK BREWERY MOVES TO DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS By Heather Turk

here’s something new brewing for craft beer drinkers to enjoy in Las Vegas. In November, one of the city’s original craft breweries, Tenaya Creek Brewery, moved from its northwest Las Vegas location into a larger venue in downtown Las Vegas. Located at 831 W. Bonanza Road, with direct access from Symphony Park where The Smith Center is located, the new location boasts a 12,000-square-foot production warehouse and a 1,500-square-foot taproom. Built in 1954, the building is one of only a few left in Las Vegas with a barrel vaulted ceiling of wood and steel. A true labor of love, it was completely restored when Tenaya Creek Brewery moved in. Open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight, beer drinkers can enjoy 28 different beers on tap inside the taproom, including each beer Tenaya Creek Brewery makes and several guest brews. Four taps are also on nitrogen to enhance the beer’s flavor. In addition to Tenaya Creek Brewery’s best-selling Bonanza Brown Ale, which won a Bronze Medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival, guests can enjoy the Tenaya Creek Pilsner, which won the highly coveted Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival for best European-style Pilsner. At the start of the New Year guests can order seasonal brews such as the Barley Wine, a beer of 10 percent alcohol by volume, and the Imperial Stout, too. Sampler trays are also available. Guests can drink their beer inside the 60seat taproom while watching one of several televisions or on the 12-seat viewing platform that boasts a view of the production facilities. For an even closer look at the brewing process, free tours are offered on select days of the week. Visitors can also purchase some beer to take home with them as well as a selection of Tenaya Creek Brewery merchandise, like hydro flasks and candles made from repurposed beer bottles.
If you can’t make it to Tenaya Creek Brewery’s new location, which offers plenty of free parking, more than 200 restaurants and bars throughout Las Vegas and on the Strip sell its beer as well as a variety of retail and grocery stores, including Lee’s Discount Liquor. Its beer is also shipped to stores and restaurants in Utah, Arizona, California and Washington as well as Vancouver, British Columbia, and Alberta, Canada. Allegiant passengers can purchase cans of Bonanza Brown Ale on their flight; ask your flight attendant for details. For more on Tenaya Creek Brewery, including a list of which food trucks will be on premise to keep guests fed and a schedule of upcoming events, visit tenayacreek.com.

ou don’t have to be a Kardashian to bypass the line at some of Las Vegas’ hottest nightclubs. Thanks to Nite Tours, you can get a taste of the Las Vegas nightlife scene by visiting some of the city’s most popular venues in one night.
While Feth said Nite Tours hosts anywhere from 1,000 to 2,300 people a night, guests only see a maximum of 33 people on their bus. Groups are kept intimate so guests can interact with each other and meet people from around the world. Nite Tours appeals to a diverse demographic; on a recent tour a couple from Mexico was celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary! Guests spend about 70 minutes at each club and have the freedom to come and go as they please before meeting up with their tour host again to travel to the next stop. While transportation is provided between venues, it is the guests’responsibility to get back to their hotel after the final stop.
“We offer a safe, entertaining environment at a value,” Feth told Sunseeker. “Not only do guests
In addition to club crawls, Nite Tours offers a Pool Party Pass during dayclub season. This gets guests into three pool parties on three different days for only $49. Founded in 1990 by former stand-up comedian Darin Feth, Nite Tours offers guests an “appetizer platter” of some of the world’s best clubs— like OMNIA Nightclub at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan Nightclub inside MGM Grand—with no lines and no cover. For one low price ($39 to $89), guests can book the Las Vegas club crawl of their choice and be whisked past the velvet ropes like a star. For example, during the four-stop VIP Club Crawl, guests meet up with their certified Nite Tours host at one of the city’s sophisticated lounges where they enjoy 2-for-1 well drinks. Then they are escorted by their host into three A-list clubs throughout the night, taking a luxury limo bus between locations as needed. ANGEL PARK LAS VEGAS
Angel Park Las Vegas is described as the “World’s Most Complete Golf Experience.” With two Arnold Palmer courses, a lighted range, a bar/restaurant, patio parties, a pro shop, a putting course and a lighted par 3 course, it’s difficult to argue the point. The Cloud Nine par 3 course at Angel Park is lighted and the perfect way to spend an evening. There are actually 12 holes inspired by some of the most infamous greens (Valley of Sin, Postage Stamp etc.) in the world, but only nine are lighted for evening play. Golf Range Magazine recently ranked the course as one of the top short courses in America. You’ll be on Cloud Nine after this experience! angelpark.com

CATCH MARCH MADNESS, VEGAS STYLE THREE SWEET SPOTS TO CATCH THE ACTION By Brian Hurlburt
L
as Vegas has become a destination for viewing the world’s biggest sporting events. And watching the college basketball playoffs, known as March Madness, has become a tradition for Vegas visitors and locals. There are plenty of places to catch the action, but here are a few of our favorites.
There are two locations of Born and Raised (BAR for short) that are owned and operated by true Vegas locals, hence the nod to being “born and raised” here in the 702. One location is in the southwest part of town while the newest is located in Green Valley. Both spots are “home away from home”
LAGASSE’S STADIUM AT THE PALAZZO
Lagasse’s Stadium is a sports book, restaurant and entertainment club all in one and a terrific spot to watch any sports action, especially the NCAA tournament. The official description sums up the vibe perfectly: “Chef, sports enthusiast and tailgating-pro Emeril Lagasse has lowered the lights and turned up the heat with crave-worthy kicked up game-day fare. Experience a whole new take on tailgating with freely flowing brews on tap, refreshing cocktails, hi-def action on over 100 screens and couches that just won’t let you go.” emerilsrestaurants.com/lagasses-stadium

This is the granddaddy of all sports books in Las Vegas. Formerly the Hilton SuperBook, the space is now a part of the renovated Westgate Las Vegas Casino and Resort. The historic area has been updated and is state-of-the-art in every way while maintaining the vibe that has made it a legend. March Madness will be crazy at the SuperBook and the on-court action will look incredible on the new LED screens that measure 220 feet wide by 18 feet tall and span the entire sports book venue. The screen is larger than the megascreen in “Jerry’s World,” the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys. It can handle multiple games or one event can be featured over the entire length and width of the screen. westgatedestinations.com

Sometimes when couples discuss their differences, things escalate into a heated argument. But at “Defending the Caveman,” star Kevin Burke makes it easy for couples to laugh at their differences and understand where the opposite sex is coming from. Las Vegas’ longest-running one-man Broadway show takes a humorous look at relationships, delving deep into how men and women think (for example, men believe in negotiation while women believe in cooperation) and how their roles back in the day of the caveman (men being hunters and women
Ticket holders never know what to expect when singing celebrity impressionist Gordie Brown takes the stage. Backed by a five-piece band, Brown brings a diverse range of stars to life, guaranteeing something for everyone in the audience. Whether he’s singing popular songs he rewrote based on the artists performing them (for example, Willie Nelson’s “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” becomes “To All the Plants I’ve Smoked Before”) or acting out Robin Williams and Ray Romano’s comical Batman auditions, audiences are gasping for air as Brown seamlessly goes from one famous voice to another. By the time the show ends with Brown’s budget-friendly Elvis Presley impersonation, it’s easy to see why the talented entertainer is nearing his 2,000th performance in Las Vegas—he’s hilarious! goldennugget.com/lasvegas/show_ gordiebrown.asp

While Lepine uses the crowd’s reaction to decide how risqué the scenarios will get, he never once humiliates anyone. Go on an hour-long guided tour by day or at night when the signs are bathed in colorful lighting. SUN, SANDALS AND SCORCHING FASTBALLS ARIZONA’S CACTUS LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING IS THE HOT TICKET By Matt Seli
S
ince its first season in 1947, Cactus League baseball has become a springtime favorite not just for those who call Arizona home, but for those folks across the country who are ready for some warmer weather and watching the game’s best—last year saw 1.9 million fans come through the turnstiles! This western version of Spring Training is the preseason home to 15 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams, spread across 10 Phoenix-area stadiums. If your Arizona getaway falls between March 1 to April 2, be sure to get out to a game or two while catching some rays and maybe even a foul ball. Here’s a breakdown of each

Cactus League venue and the teams that call them home during Spring Training. For the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks fan or Colorado Rockies enthusiasts, there’s Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale. Opened in 2011, this stadium is new to both teams as well as the Cactus League. See a game here and you just might catch Major League Baseball’s hottest offseason acquisition, newly signed Arizona starting pitcher Zach Greinke. An even newer venue and possibly the most visited among out-of-town enthusiasts, Sloan Park in Mesa opened in 2014 and is home to the Chicago Cubs during Spring Training. Hot off their National League Championship Series appearance in 2015, the Cubbies look to pick up from where they left off when they hit the field for Cactus League play. Chicago’s other pride and joy, the White Sox, have their Spring Training home at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. Located on the west side of the greater Phoenix area, this facility is also home to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Complete with 13 full baseball fields on property, the main stadium holds 13,000 fans.

In the west valley in Goodyear, both the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians call Goodyear Park home each year prior to Opening Day. Ohio and Cincinnati natives will appreciate the variety of food concepts, including Cleveland inspired mustard and Skyline Chili, harkening the flavors of Cincinnati. Another stadium with two teams is Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona. Both the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers call this gem home during Cactus League play, and what a gem it is winning numerous awards including USA Today’s 2012 Best Spring Training Facility. To top it off, the Royals look to start 2016 just as they left off 2015, when they won their first World Series since 1985. Towards the east valley of Phoenix lies Tempe and the Tempe Diablo Stadium, Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Although the 9,600 seating capacity is second lowest in the Cactus League, Tempe Diablo Stadium, with its picturesque mountain views and convenient location off two major freeways, is always one of the most attended throughout Spring Training.
renovations keep it looking like new every season, highlighted by the largest HD scoreboard display in the league. Those looking to catch the San Diego Padres or Seattle Mariners during Spring Training will want to head over to Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. Opened in 1994, this stadium holds over 12,000 fans and a fresh renovation was just completed last year—improving the fan experience through seat upgrades, a new team store, and additional restrooms. The Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants is none other than Scottsdale Stadium. Located in scenic Scottsdale, it’s no wonder the Giants have extended their lease through to 2025. With so many teams playing in Arizona this spring, baseball fans can take advantage of more than just rooting for the team they call their own. They can see new ballparks, try new foods, and enjoy spending time with friends and family soaking up some sun. Play ball!
Where other than Milwaukee can you see lifesize sausages race around a baseball diamond? Maryvale, of course, at the Milwaukee Brewer’s Spring Training home in Maryvale Baseball Park. Opened in 1998, this Cactus League stadium holds 10,000 “Brew Crew” fans and serves up tasty bratwursts, just like in Wisconsin! Located in the heart of Mesa, the Oakland A’s play their spring ball at Hohokam Stadium. Opened in 1977, Hohokam may be one of the older ball parks in the Cactus League, but the

Meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike can pop into this new hot dog haven that pays homage to Colombian street eats and try a tasty pup in one of the restaurant’s signature styles. The Colombian gets your dog topped with sweet pineapple, crushed potato chips, mozzarella cheese and a proprietary sauce. Tokyo Madness is a hot dog covered in teriyaki onions, wasabi mayo and toasted nori, otherwise known as seaweed. Salchipapas, a South American snack dish, is also on Simon’s menu. DINING
Beyond appetizers like spinach dip and wings, this small batch brewery, with two Scottsdale locations, offers sandwiches, salads and pizzas, too. The sandwich category includes the Bistro Melt, which mingles ham and Gruyere cheese for rich deliciousness. There is also the Roasted Garlic Burger, whereby the meat is slathered in more Gruyere cheese, as well as some mushrooms and, of course garlic. Fate has an intriguing list of craft beers. The Hatch Chile Cream Ale is their Golden Ale that adds the flavor of the peppers, with very little heat, and their Bamberg Hefeweizen has notes of clove and banana. fatebrewing.com

ne way to appreciate the magic of the desert landscape is to immerse yourself in its beauty. Hiking allows you the opportunity to reap the benefits of exercise while on vacation and to become one with nature. The Phoenix area’s many mountain ranges give beginners and experienced hikers plenty of trails to choose from for their explorative excursions. Here are just a few of the regional, well-traveled paths that invite you to wander.

PAPAGO PARK
This popular 1,200-acre hiking destination is well known for its unique, red sandstone buttes. All of the trails range from easy to minimal difficulty, making it a nice place to visit for a group whose agility levels may vary. Another highlight is that though the trails are fairly short, you can reach elevation quickly and easily to enjoy higher views of the surrounding area. Papago Park also houses the Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Garden, two extremely popular destinations. phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations/papago-park
Saguaro—the iconic tall plant that is synonymous with the Sonoran desert landscape. This time of year, wildflowers will also be in bloom. Don’t be alarmed by things in motion, like Gila monsters, while on the Pinnacle Peak trail. This weighty lizard isn’t always an encounter but, like most of us, they get hungry and come out of hiding to hunt for snacks. While they are neat to look at, if you encounter one, keep a little distance as they do bite. Bike racks, restrooms and drinking fountains are at the trailhead. scottsdaleaz.gov/ parks/pinnacle-peak-park

Outstanding views of Phoenix, as well as of the Four Peaks, a landmark on the city’s eastern skyline and part of the Mazatzal Mountains in Tonto National Forest. The trail also offers access to many important features, including Windgate Overlook and the Marcus Landslide Trail, where you can learn about the second largest landslide in Arizona history. mcdowellsonoran.org

SPRING FESTIVALS IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN By Amy Young

hile things tend to quiet down a bit in Arizona during the summer months, October through May is known informally as “festival season.” Celebrating everything from culinary delights, to animals, to specific genres of music, it’s easy to fill your calendar this time of year. Here is a small selection of the many festivals you can experience during March and April in the Valley of the Sun.
Photo of Phoenix Film Festival by Ryan Coleman; McDowell Mountain Music Festival by Devon Christopher Adams; Ostrich races by Randy West
MCDOWELL MOUNTAIN MUSIC FESTIVAL
Started in 2004, this annual music festival features a mix of acts on both a main stage and a local stage, March 11-13. This year, some of the big names on the bill include Beck, Animal Collective and the Avett Brothers. Previous years
have seen the likes of legendary rocker David Crosby and country star Dwight Yoakam. This rocking event also has a stellar mission. Each year, all of the event’s proceeds are donated to two, family-based, local non-profit charities. mmmf.com
OSTRICH FESTIVAL
For 28 years, Arizona residents and visitors flock to Tumbleweed Park in Chandler for this festival that celebrates the large, long-necked bird that, unlike many of its feathered friends, doesn’t take to the air in flight. The three-day event, March 11-13, features ostrich races, live music performances, carnival rides, food and activities for the little ones, including a petting zoo, camel and pony rides, and arts and crafts. ostrichfestival.com
PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL
Fans rock out at the annual McDowell Mountain Music Festival
Hosted by the Phoenix Film Foundation, this movie-centric festival started back in 2000 as a way for independent filmmakers to showcase their works. It has grown into an eagerly anticipated event that sees an average yearly attendance of 25,000 guests. More than 150 films are screened from April 7-14 at Harkins Theatres Scottsdale 101. Film fans can also attend a variety of seminars that feature guest panelists. Some folks like to spend time between films trying to catch sightings of celebs that are in town to promote their work. phoenixfilmfestival.com
SCOTTSDALE CULINARY FESTIVAL
Ostrich races are a highlight at the Ostrich Festival
Scottsdale’s lush Civic Center Mall hosts booths featuring food samples from more than 40 area restaurants, April 16-17. In between bites, enjoy live music and special activities. New this year is the Culinary Experience Tent, where you can see chef demonstrations, student cooking challenges and wine seminars from Arizona winemakers. The event hosts a Wine Garden as well as multiple specialty beverage areas, including the Southwest Festival of Beers with more than 250 choices. scottsdalefest.org ENTERTAINMENT

It’s the one never-ending question most parents dread—“Why?”—but at this playful learning laboratory, children are encouraged to explore their curiosity about the world around them. Boasting more than 600 exhibits, like the popular “Shadow Box,” which temporarily freezes a person’s shadow on a phosphorus wall by storing light from a strobe flash, the museum houses six main galleries each focusing on a different area of exploration. Guests will find interactive exhibits ranging from human behavior to the science of the San Francisco Bay. Visitors can even think with their hands inside The Tinkering Studio. On March 14th admission is free for Pi Day, the mathematical holiday founded at the Exploratorium. exploratorium.edu
CHILDREN’S CREATIVITY MUSEUM
The sky’s the limit at this popular children’s museum, which features hands-on workshops and exhibits designed to nurture creativity. Visitors can learn how to make a stopmotion animated movie using wire and clay in the Animation Studio; write code while programming a robot to throw a ball, navigate mazes and complete other challenges in the Tech Lab; or create their own video game or board game in the new “Games” exhibit, which features a variety of gamethemed activities. When it’s time to rest those creative juices, take a spin back in time on San Francisco’s most historic carousel. Hand carved in 1906, the carousel is located just outside the museum in Yerba Buena Gardens (additional fee applies). creativity.org 78

MUSIC: THE SOUL OF HAWAII THREE OF THE BEST VENUES FOR LIVE HAWAIIAN MUSIC By Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi
S
ome say the soul of Hawaii is revealed through its music. Top Island entertainers, many of whom are multiple winners of Na H k Hanohano (Stars of Distinction) Awards, Hawaii’s version of the Grammys, perform in Waikiki year-round. Here are three of the best venues for live Hawaiian music.

HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE WAIKIKI BEACH RESORT
The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort has been dubbed the “Home of Hawaii’s Music.” Regulars on its entertainment slate include Jerry Santos, who’s in his 23rd year of performing at the resort. You’ll find him and his group, Olomana, at the Tapa Bar on Friday and Saturday evenings. Henry Kapono, who has lit up local stages for more than 40 years, should also be on your radar. He appears at the Tropics Bar & Grill, the Hilton’s beachfront eatery, on Saturday afternoons. Another standout is songstress Nohelani Cypriano, who’s in the spotlight there on Thursday and Friday evenings. hiltonhawaiianvillage.com

Na‘auao are among the rotating stars in the nightly music lineup at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort’s Kani Ka Pila Grille. Featured performers Wednesday through Saturday afternoons include Jeff Rasmussen, Robi Kahakalau and Maila Gibson. Twice a month on various Sundays, Waikiki Beach Walk’s lawn is the setting for the free, late afternoon Na Mele No Na Pua Sunday Showcase. Among those on this year’s schedule are Tahiti Mana (a Pacific dance group) on March 6 and Danny Couch on March 20. outriggerreef-onthebeach.com

On the last Friday of every month the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, presents Mele at the Moana under its century-old banyan tree. The concert series is reminiscent of “Hawaii Calls,” a radio program that was broadcast in that pretty seaside setting from 1935 to 1975. Coming up are Robert Cazimero (April 29), a prolific composer and respected kumu hula (teacher of Hawaiian dance), and guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson (June 24) whose songs were featured in the movie The Descendants, starring George Clooney. There will be no Mele in March because a special program will celebrate the hotel’s 115th anniversary. moana-surfrider.com

Many jobs available, including Flight Attendants! To apply & view other career opportunities go to:
BEN BJERK, FIRST OFFICER, PILOT, OAKLAND CALIFORNIA
ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BEN BJERK
A
s proud supporters of veterans, in November 2015, Allegiant signed a pledge with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a branch of the Department of Defense. By signing the pledge, Allegiant promises to recognize and support Team Members and their families who have or are currently serving our country. Allegiant first officer Ben Bjerk is one of nearly 200 Allegiant team members who are reservists or veterans. Based in Oakland, California, Ben is a proud pilot for both Allegiant and the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Sunseeker: How long have you been working for Allegiant? Ben: I started working at Allegiant in November 2014. I joined the company from the U.S. Air Force, where I flew KC-135 Stratotankers, RQ-4 Global Hawks and instructed other pilots in the T-6 Texan II. I am currently based at Travis AFB (near Sacramento, CA) with one of the KC-10 squadrons there. I still enjoy serving my country in the Air Force Reserves whenever I’m not flying for Allegiant! Sunseeker: When did you realize you were passionate about flying? Ben: Ever since I was a kid, I loved flying. Like many pilots, I started flying remote control airplanes in the park. As Leonardo da Vinci pointed out, “For once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been, and there you will long to return.” That was certainly the case for me. Sunseeker: How does your job impact our travelers? Ben: I love taking people on their vacations, and to and from their loved ones back home. At Allegiant, we pride ourselves on making travel affordable for everyone. Sunseeker: What’s your most memorable moment during a flight?
Ben: There was an artist on a flight that drew a picture for us on a paper towel. This was the clearest indication that we were doing a good job. This kind of feeling is what makes us love our job. We enjoy impacting people’s lives in a positive way. Sunseeker: In your opinion, what three words describe working at Allegiant? Ben: Opportunity, Professionalism and Fun. We provide travel opportunities and options for our travelers, we pride ourselves on professionalism and the people I work with on a daily basis truly make it a fun job. Sunseeker: Do you have a “locals” tip for Allegiant travelers going to the Oakland area? Ben: If you have an extra afternoon in Oakland, California, take a stroll around beautiful Lake Merritt. Parking can be tough, so find an area nearby and take an Uber. There are a lot of local businesses and eateries there, making it one of Oakland’s best-kept secrets. Sunseeker: What makes your job worthwhile? Ben: My favorite moments are whenever I see families reunited at the airport. It reminds me that what we do is really important and that numerous people rely on us to get the job done safely each day. Seeing this makes each experience worthwhile. SUNSEEKER

LLEGIANT HAS ALL THE BEST DEALS FOR ALL THINGS NEW IN LAS VEGAS Las Vegas is one of those cities that is in a class all of its own. There really isn’t anywhere else that can offer the 24/7 entertainment, gaming, dining and resort amenities that this town does while reinventing itself almost constantly. Each time you visit the Las Vegas, either on the Strip or Downtown, there is always something new and exciting that you either weren’t aware of or didn’t exist the last time you visited. Allegiant, along with its partners, have all the exclusive deals that will make sure you get to experience all these new things at the best possible prices. Just think about the last time you visited Las Vegas. Was The Cosmopolitan around? One of the newest hotels on the Strip, “The Cosmo” is one of the most luxurious properties to indulge in with its 100,000-square-foot casino, vast collection of restaurants, multiple nightclubs and bars, world-class spa and three distinct pools. The Cromwell is another example of how the Strip has reinvented itself, taking over a previous hotel and transforming into a one-of-a-kind resort. Another transformation is the SLS Las Vegas with over 1,600 guest rooms and a style all of its own. SLS Las Vegas is a large part of Las Vegas’ revitalization in the north end of the Strip which has seen dramatic changes in just the past few years. Keep visiting, and the new oriental-themed Lucky Dragon will be another can’t miss location on the north end of the Strip.

Allegiant, as many of you have come to know, is more than just an airline. Through its model of bringing passengers from their hometowns to popular tourist destinations— such as Las Vegas—the company has forged partnerships with other travel-related companies in each destination it serves. From hotels and rental car companies to theme parks and headlining shows, Allegiant’s offerings to its customers has grown to make it a complete travel company. Through the company’s website, Allegiant.com, customers will be presented with savings opportunities through the normal booking process. Once you have selected your flights, the system will suggest hotels, car rentals and attractions based on your destination. Keep in mind that many of these deals are exclusive to Allegiant customers; you won’t find these types of savings anywhere else. During your next Las Vegas Allegiant vacation, don’t miss out on all the savings available to you at all the attractions in the city that continues to reinvent itself.

Allegiant manager Leah’s son Michael (second from the left) is also a Make-A-Wish kid
THE POWER OF A WISH MAKE-A-WISH IS FUELED BY THE “KINDNESS OF STRANGERS”
L
eah Scherr is a project manager at Allegiant headquarters in Las Vegas and for her, Allegiant’s partnership with MakeA-Wish carries special significance since her own son is a Make-A-Wish child. “The Power of a Wish…it is an energy; a real and tangible force of good. Each wish is fueled by the kindness of strangers. My son Michael is a Wish child and a four-year survivor of diffuse large B cell lymphoma. While he was sick, the hope and positive energy of the thought of his upcoming Wish provided him a muchneeded distraction from the sickness and pain of chemotherapy. The Wish was a bright focal point for the whole family to anticipate as part of a healthy and cancer-free future. The Wish… My son’s wish was simple; to go spend time with his best friend in Pocatello, Idaho. From the moment we were picked up at our home by a limo to go to the airport and at every carefully planned adventure during the Wish, we were surrounded by the overwhelming kindness of complete strangers. Imagine how you would feel after four straight days of receiving genuine kindness and generosity from everyone you met. I can testify that for my family, it felt amazing! What a journey it was to travel from the lowest of lows, potentially losing my son, to the highest of highs on our Wish trip. Three years later fate brought me to work at Allegiant, a major supporter of Make-A-Wish. I am so proud to be a part of a company that pours out so much love and kindness to
Leah and her family stop for a break during their Make-AWish trip
hundreds of wish kids and their families. To see all that Allegiant does and to now be a part of the “kindness of strangers” means the world to me. Every act of kindness from our stations’ teams as they create special send offs at the airports, from our flight crews that give cockpit tours, from our flight attendants that provide a world class in-flight experience, from our maintenance crews that make sure the aircraft is ready to fly, to every team member that bakes, cooks and donates to raffles to raise money, to every team member that joins a Make-A-Wish 5k run; this is the “stuff” that Wishes are made of, the fuel that powers the Wish! I was fortunate to participate in a small way at Serena’s (Allegiant’s 300th Wish kid) airport send off in Las Vegas. Along with dozens of other team members we held up special balloon signs at the ticket counter. The troupe of Allegiant supporters continued to the gate to give a final cheer of love and support to Serena and her family as they boarded the plane. I had a chance to talk to Serena’s mom prior to boarding. As chance or fate would have it, Serena and my son were treated at the same hospital and had the same nurses. I felt very fortunate to connect with one of our Wish families and give them encouragement on their journey. I am so honored to work for Allegiant and be a part of an amazing team that provides the ‘fuel’ to power so many Wishes.” Leah Scherr
