Blue Man Group performing “Creature Feature”

A PERFORMANCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER BLUE MAN GROUP’S SPECIAL SHOW FOR AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS By Heather Turk

W

ith their inventive instruments, curious nature and catchy songs, Blue Man Group is that rare show that appeals to kids and adults alike. In an effort to not exclude anyone from enjoying the production, Blue Man Group has put on a special sensory-friendly show in Las Vegas for the past two years so that children and families affected by autism spectrum disorders could also experience the production live. Scheduled this year for June 11 at 4 p.m., the annual performance benefits Las Vegas’ own Grant a Gift Autism Foundation and features reduced sound and lighting levels at various moments during the show as well as a more subdued approach to audience interactions. Additionally, the theater lobby will be transformed into a calming environment, complete with beanbag chairs and coloring pages, for families who need a break from all of the excitement.

Priced at $36, tickets to the sensory-friendly performance include complimentary popcorn, sunglasses and glow-in-the-dark necklaces for guests to enjoy as well as earplugs upon request. This year’s event will also feature a new interactive activity guests can participate in before the show. To date, the sensory-friendly performances have raised more than $20,000 for the Grant a Gift Autism Foundation. While the sensory-friendly show is open to everyone, Blue Man Group will also perform their regularly scheduled shows later that evening. Performances run nightly at Luxor Hotel and Casino at 7 and 9:30 p.m. (dark May 10) with an additional matinee at 4 p.m. on May 27. Allegiant passengers receive special deals when they purchase their tickets onboard. Ask your flight attendant for details, and for more on Blue Man Group’s sensory-friendly performances, visit blueman.com/autismspeaks.

“We’ve heard from many families affected by autism that their children responded to the Blue Man character in a very moving way,” said Blue Man Group Co-founder Phil Stanton in a statement issued to the press. “With our sensory-friendly shows, we want to create a safe and welcoming environment for individuals and families.”

“These kiddos find that they relate to the Blue Men as they too communicate with their hands, symbols, facial expressions and music,” added Lynda Tache, president, founder and CEO of the Grant a Gift Autism Foundation. “It is a moment and place in time where they feel accepted and comfortable to be who they are. This is the first time many of them have been able to experience a show like this.”

“World’s Greatest Rock Show” features a performance by a Kiss tribute band in complete makeup

“WORLD’S GREATEST ROCK SHOW” PAYS TRIBUTE TO ROCK ’N’ ROLL’S MOST ELECTRIFYING ACTS By Heather Turk

A

lmost everyone has a favorite rock concert they’ve been to over the years. While the bands might be different, there are certain classic rock acts that repeatedly get mentioned as the best of the best whenever you ask someone what their favorite rock concert was—groups like Kiss, Journey, Heart and Van Halen. Now, Las Vegas audiences can relive the glory days of rock ’n’ roll during a 90-minute tribute show that pays homage to the genre’s greatest acts appropriately titled “World’s Greatest Rock Show.”

Produced by veteran Las Vegas producer Dick Feeney and Red Mercury Entertainment owner Darin Feinstein, “World’s Greatest Rock Show” lives up to its name by featuring six talented tribute acts performing the hit songs that made their real-life rock ’n’ roll counterparts household names. Audiences will be in awe as each act takes the stage, as they not only sound like the rock stars they are portraying, but they look like them, too. “We’re giving you as close to the real thing as you can get, and after years of producing ‘The Rat Pack is Back’ and ‘MJ Live,’ I am convinced that is what folks prefer,” Feeney told Sunseeker. The show premiered at Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower on April 4 with a star-studded lineup that had audience members on their feet dancing along to the music. Currently, the show features tribute acts performing as Bruce Springsteen, Heart, Van Halen, Journey, Meat Loaf and Kiss, with plans to develop additional acts and change the lineup in the future. Each act plays for approximately 15 minutes and is backed by a full band that’s specific to each act’s needs. “It’s not just a singer with the same backup musicians,” Feeney noted. “All instruments and vocals are live, too, except for a few sweetening tracks.”

FEATURE STORY

Feeney said he is especially proud of the talent featured in the show, as “it is by far the top talent in the business.” While the producer admitted that he and Feinstein had a general idea of which acts they wanted to pay tribute to in the

show when casting the production (“We wanted to go with groups that had a minimum of four blockbuster hits and at least one hit that could be considered a stadium rock anthem,” Feeney explained), it was the talent who showed up to audition that truly decided the final lineup. Although even the most casual rock ’n’ roll fan will no doubt be singing along to such familiar songs as Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” Kiss’ “Rock and Roll All Nite” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” during the show, die-hard fans of the groups featured in the production will appreciate Feeney and Feinstein’s attention to detail when bringing the acts to life. From Kiss’ striking makeup and costumes to the girl in the audience the Bruce Springsteen tribute artist pulls onstage to dance with him while performing “Dancing in the Dark” (a nod to Courteney Cox, who was pulled up onstage to dance with The Boss while filming his “Dancing in the Dark” video), it’s clear “World’s Greatest Rock Show” was a labor of love for all involved. There’s even a funny bit involving a very confused Ozzy Osbourne impersonator wandering around aimlessly onstage between certain sets.

Guests can also sip tasty cocktails named after some of the songs performed in the show while watching the rockin’ production, like the Barracuda, a mix of Absolut Lime vodka, Malibu

rum, blue curaçao and pineapple juice, and the Panama: Patrón Silver tequila with peach purée, lime and Sierra Mist. While Feeney wouldn’t divulge which act was his favorite in the show (“I can’t say because the cast will definitely see this,” he smartly replied), he did share with Sunseeker that there are many bands he would like to see join “World’s Greatest Rock Show’s” tribute lineup someday, including Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Queen and AC/DC. For now, though, he’s more than satisfied with the current lineup of rock legends the show pays tribute to, and the diverse group of ticket holders it should attract. “I’m always thinking about the next show idea,” Feeney said. “Part of the consideration of what might work is based on audience demographics, and there is a huge group [of people] between the ages of 21 and 70 that love all sorts of rock.” “World’s Greatest Rock Show” rocks the Stratosphere Theater Tuesday through Sunday at 9 p.m. Tickets range from $35 to $65 plus tax and fees. Guests must be five years of age or older to attend. Be sure to stick around after the show, as the cast members are available for photos in the theater lobby. Just when you think you’ve seen it all in Las Vegas, along comes a grown man performing magic in a dragon costume. The self-proclaimed “loser of ‘America’s Got Talent,’” Piff the Magic Dragon puts on one of the Strip’s best shows using little more than some playing cards, a toaster and the world’s only magic performing Chihuahua, Mr. Piffles. One of the Strip’s hottest tickets, nothing is off limits during Ralphie May’s new late-night comedy show, “No Apologies.” The “Last Comic Standing” star tackles everything from his sex life to President Trump’s plans to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border during the uncensored set. No one is safe from May’s astute observations as he points out how both Republicans and Democrats alike are to blame for the results of the 2016 election. While the country may be more divided than ever, if there’s one thing everyone can agree on it’s that May makes some valid points with his timely and uproarious material. ralphiemayvegas.com

A true comedy icon, Rich Little proves why he’s one of the best in the business with his autobiographical one-man show, “Rich Little Live.” This entertaining production touches upon the many legendary people Little has met over the years—everyone from Paul Lynde to Andy Rooney—as the comedian brings each person to life with his spot-on impressions. Proving that his act isn’t “totally deceased,” Little also updates a bit he did on “The Judy Garland Show” by impersonating more contemporary performers like Jack Nicholson and Arnold Schwarzenegger as he speaks the lyrics to “The Man That Got Away.” The result is a heartfelt and hilarious tribute to Hollywood that’s a joy from start to finish. troplv.com/las-vegas/shows-entertainment/ rich-little-live-laugh-factory ENTERTAINMENT

NOTHIN’ BUT A GOOD TIME TENORS OF ROCK REIMAGINE SOME OF ROCK ’N’ ROLL’S GREATEST HITS By Heather Turk

N

early seven years ago, Gareth Richards had the idea to take charge of his destiny by forming his own singing group and working for himself. The singer-actor had just moved back to Wales after touring with a Shakespearean theater company and felt it was a turning point in his life. Thus, Tenors of Rock was born—five burly Brits singing some of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest hits like never before. What began as a sideline gig for most of the members, however, eventually turned into a full-time career. Now, after appearing on “The X Factor UK” and selling out arenas worldwide, Tenors of Rock are headlining their own show in Las Vegas. “It’s an incredible thing,” Richards told Sunseeker. “We’re not an established act like Jennifer Lopez or Britney Spears who had huge careers before Las Vegas. We’re just normal guys who worked really hard to get to where we are today.”

All photos by Denise Truscello

Comprised of Richards, his brother Dai and their “band of brothers” Jonathan Williams, Tommy Sherlock and Jimmy Denning, Tenors of Rock pay homage to some of rock ’n’ roll’s most beloved songs by “flipping things around” and giving them “a different flavor.” Audiences will hear classics like Bon Jovi’s “Bed

of Roses” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” performed with a twist during the Las Vegas show, although Richards admitted he was a bit hesitant to tackle “Bohemian Rhapsody” at first. “I didn’t want to touch it for a few years,” Richards confessed. “It’s such an iconic piece. But then I began thinking how Freddie Mercury would have done it if he had five singers at his disposal and I think we’ve done the song justice. It’s never been done the way we do it before, how we break it down and stretch it out and begin singing it a cappella. I’m very proud of it.” Tenors of Rock also perform a beautiful new orchestration of “The Music of the Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera” during the show as a nod to the group’s musical theater past. “The show is just full of incredible music,” Richards stated. “There’s such a wide range of sounds, there’s really no demographic it doesn’t work on. Guests are guaranteed to have a good time.” Tenors of Rock perform Wednesday through Monday at 8 p.m. inside Harrah’s Las Vegas. Tickets start at just $35, plus tax and fees. The Backstreet Boys are back and better than ever in this one-of-a-kind production made exclusively for Las Vegas. Performing their greatest hits, including “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),” “Shape of My Heart” and “The Call,” the quintet focuses more on substance than flash during the relatively (by Vegas standards) stripped-down show. Joined only by 10 back-up dancers, the guys let their pitch-perfect vocals and impressive dance moves steal the spotlight. The result is a unique pop production that showcases the act’s genuine talent and is sure to leave fans screaming for more. backstreetboys.com

Performing a selection of pop and rock classics, audiences will embark on a musical journey that’s punctuated by stories from patriarch Vinny’s own life working as a successful record producer who always dreamt of performing onstage. While the group does a stellar job performing songs by such artists as Dion, Billy Joel and Bruno Mars, they are at their best when they’re performing The Four Seasons’ greatest hits, as Vinny can hit Frankie Valli’s high notes with ease. A toe-tapping joy from start to finish, audiences are sure to love this Bronx tale! thebronxwanderers.com

The Sassy Sally’s sign

NOTEWORTHY NEON EXPLORING THE HISTORIC NEON MUSEUM By Eliza Welsh

F

ounded in 1996 and officially opened in 2012, the Neon Museum houses hundreds of neon signs dating back to the 1930s. Each unique sign is accompanied by a story of who created the sign, when and where the sign was made and the role the sign played in the history of Las Vegas. The two-acre museum encompasses the historic La Concha Motel, which has been repurposed into a visitors’ center, and the Neon Boneyard Park that lets visitors view signs up close. More recently, signs have been restored and placed along Las Vegas Boulevard. In 2009, the stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara Avenue and Washington Avenue was named as one of just three scenic byways in the U.S. As a result of this special designation, the Neon Museum partnered with the City of Las Vegas to form the Las Vegas Signs Project. The program focuses on restoring memorable signs and placing them alongside the road in the epicenter of downtown Las Vegas.

in 1961. The lobby was saved from demolition in 2005 and remains a fascinating example of mid-century modern design. The Neon Museum transports visitors into the past while giving them a rare view of a significant Las Vegas art form. Children, history buffs and photographers will be enamored by the array of offerings at the Neon Museum. For more information and tickets to the museum call 702.387.6366 or visit neonmuseum.org.

The Neon Boneyard Park sign

The majority of the museum’s signs are displayed in the Neon Boneyard Park, which features over 200 vintage signs. In 2012, fully restored and lighted signs were included in the museum’s collection for the first time. Seven electrified signs are now featured in the Boneyard and are best seen during a nighttime tour. Crowd favorites include the Wedding Information sign and the dramatic La Concha roadside sign.

ENTERTAINMENT

“HYPNOSIS UNLEASHED”

This hilarious hypnosis show inside Binion’s Gambling Hall turns Las Vegas visitors into stars as audience members volunteer to be hypnotized by Kevin Lepine. While the skilled hypnotist keeps audiences laughing throughout the show with his funny scenarios, which range from making people think that they’re members of the Village People or that they’re watching an X-rated movie in 3-D, Lepine makes sure never to humiliate his volunteers. In fact, one of his most popular hypnosis bits is to find a person who has been married for a while, make them remember how much they love their spouse and have them give their husband/wife the most passionate kiss of their life. While every show is different based on who steps onstage, Lepine knows how to read each volunteer to give ticket holders an evening they’ll never forget. www.binions.com/ entertainment

“MARRIAGE CAN BE MURDER”

Las Vegas’ longest-running dinner show, this comedy whodunit at the D Las Vegas lets guests enjoy a tasty three-course meal as they try to figure out who is behind all of the bodies dropping around them. As a game of Clue come to life, guests will be left wondering if the person sitting next to them is the murderer—or if they’ll even survive the next course! Entrée selections include beef brisket in a peppercorn sauce (Dead Meat), chicken Marsala (Foul Play) and penne pasta in a red sauce with vegetables (Hasta La Pasta). Guests also receive a salad and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate chips. marriagecanbemurder.com

A modern-day Frank Sinatra, this beloved Las Vegas showman recently signed a contract to headline the same resort he performed in as a lounge singer nearly 15 years ago. Performing through August inside The Showroom at Golden Nugget, Moreno brings audiences to their feet every Thursday and Saturday night with his smooth vocals and impressive piano and harmonica-playing skills. Joined by a seven-piece band (including Moreno’s brother Tony on bass)

and three backup singers, Moreno performs a mix of original numbers and covers during the high-energy concert, including his version of The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” which he recorded with world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell. THANK YOU ALLEGIANT

I just wanted to give a big compliment to one of your employees. I had to cancel a reservation and called in to do that. Joy was such a… joy to speak with! I love Allegiant and fly with you all the time. Thanks for all the great service to Montana, especially Bozeman!

– Jeff, Montana

I had the pleasure of making my reservation with Roni. She was professional, helpful and beyond insightful about our travel arrangements! She literally made everything easy!

– Lisa, Arkansas

I want to thank you for the fantastic customer service you gave me yesterday. I retired two years ago as a CIO for a large accounting firm, and we had a large call center for in-house technical support. Cindy’s helpful demeanor on the phone with me yesterday reminded me of what I would have been proud of if my employees were as helpful and friendly as she was.

SPOTLIGHT

HAROLD “TIM” WRIGHT

Brooke Nimz, LAX Flight Attendant

ALLEGIANT TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BROOKE NIMZ, LAX FLIGHT ATTENDANT By Samantha Fairchild and Kerry McGee

Sunseeker: How long have you been working for Allegiant? Brooke: I have worked here for just over 3 ½ years. Sunseeker: What do you do at Allegiant? Brooke: I am an LAX-based flight attendant. Sunseeker: What about your job gets you excited to go to work? Brooke: The passengers! I am always wondering about the travelers on my flight. Where are they going? Will I recognize any of our regulars? We fly the same routes each week; we tend to have people that travel with us on a monthly, or even weekly basis. Seeing familiar faces each week has allowed me to develop great friendships with our travelers. Additionally, great things have come from simply having conversations with them. I had a conversation with someone traveling home for the holidays a couple of years ago and she is now an Allegiant flight attendant! Sunseeker: Have you been able to use your flight benefits to go on vacation? Brooke: I have a lot of family and friends in the Midwest (near Chicago), and my flight benefits allow me to visit them often. I have also visited Hawaii, New Zealand and parts of Europe! My most recent vacation was to visit my daughter after she finished her semester abroad in Ireland. We met in London and spent two 68

SPOTLIGHT

weeks traveling through England, France, Germany and Austria. Sunseeker: In your opinion, what three words describe working at Allegiant? Brooke: Flexibility, equality and family! Sunseeker: If you could travel anywhere in the United States where would you go and why? Brooke: The number one item on my U.S. bucket list is to go hiking at Denali National Park in Alaska. I love being outdoors, hiking and wildlife. I’ve heard Denali is absolutely breathtaking! Sunseeker: Do you have a local’s tip for our travelers visiting the LAX area? Brooke: I would encourage all LAX travelers to visit a south-facing beach to watch an amazing California sunset!

MAKE-A-WISH ®

The Journey of a Wish documents some of the many wishes granted by the chapter

ALLEGIANT AND MAKE-A-WISH® A PARTNERSHIP TAKES FLIGHT By Courtney Goff

A

llegiant has been a part of the national Make-A-Wish® family for more than five years. In that time, we have provided nearly 700 flights to wish destinations, raised funds through the sale of Wingz Kids Snack Packs in-flight and sponsored Walk For Wishes® events across the country. In 2017, Allegiant is opening its home to Make-A-Wish. The $1.5 million renovation of space on Allegiant’s corporate campus in Summerlin will provide a new headquarters, The Wishing Place, for the Southern Nevada chapter of Make-A-Wish under a $1 per year lease. This means nearly $100,000 in annual rent expense will be redirected toward granting more wishes.

In February, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada unveiled their new headquarters on Allegiant’s campus

The Wishing Place will not only be headquarters to the Southern Nevada chapter of the non-profit organization, but it will also be a place where Wish Kids and their families can visit for hope, warmth and inspiration during illness and recovery.

Dubbed ‘The Wishing Place,’ the new office will be the starting point for all wishes granted by the Southern Nevada chapter

“All of us at Allegiant are thrilled to be able to provide a wonderful new home for MakeA-Wish Southern Nevada and to welcome the many volunteers and staff members to our campus,” said Maurice J. Gallagher, Jr., chairman and CEO, Allegiant. “Our partnership with Make-A-Wish, supporting the incredible work they do, brings a great sense of pride to our team – throughout the Allegiant network, and especially here in our hometown.”

Allegiant has been partnering with Make-AWish since 2012 to provide flights for Wish children and their families to destinations across the country. In 2016 alone, we flew more than 200 Wish families to their destinations – that’s over 1,100 seats, and nearly 1 million miles donated thus far. From snorkeling in Hawaii to the Florida theme parks to fossil-exploring in Montana, we’ve been honored to help so many wishes come true. MAKE-A-WISH®

Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR

VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.
