“Cake Boss” star Buddy Valastro inside his first-ever restaurant, Buddy V’s Ristorante
FROM CAKE BOSS TO CELEBRITY CHEF
BUDDY VALASTRO REALIZES A CHILDHOOD DREAM WITH BUDDY V’S RISTORANTE By Heather Turk
B
uddy V’s Ristorante inside Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian I The Palazzo may be celebrating its fourth anniversary on Oct. 7, but celebrity chef Buddy Valastro (TLC’s “Cake Boss”) remembers walking into the Las Vegas restaurant for the first time like it was yesterday.
famed Carlo’s Bakery has a location directly across from Buddy V’s entrance, the restaurant showcases some of Valastro’s signature sweets, too, including Buddy V’s XL Lobster Tail: a flaky pastry shell stuffed with custard cream and served with seasonal fruit.
“I had just flown in from Texas,” Valastro told Sunseeker. “I couldn’t wait to see it, so even though it was already after midnight I went to check it out. When I saw the view of the Strip [from the dining room] I was just amazed. I was so humbled, I started crying. It was always my childhood dream to have a restaurant on the Strip.”
“I really tip my hat to Liz and the team for keeping the quality up,” Valastro, who visits the restaurant three to five times a year, said. “We’ve won so many awards. Being in the company of so many amazing chefs from around the world, though, is just such a huge accomplishment to me.”
Open for lunch, dinner and a popular Saturday/ Sunday buffet-style brunch, Valastro describes the homestyle eatery as an “old-fashioned Italian restaurant where you can enjoy a meal like you’d get at your aunt or grandma’s house.” Showcasing the recipes of the “culinary rock stars” Valastro grew up with—his family—the renowned baker said he was smart enough to know that “being a real good home cook doesn’t necessarily translate well to running a restaurant,” so he partnered with local restaurateurs Elizabeth Blau and Kim Canteenwalla to help out with his first-ever restaurant venture.
While Valastro said diners can’t go wrong with the massive veal Bone-In Parm Chop for dinner, other highlights on the mouthwatering menu include his dad’s creamy Bucatini Carbonara (available for lunch and dinner) made with pancetta, cracked black pepper and egg, and his Grandma’s Meatballs (offered for brunch, lunch and dinner) made from the perfect blend of beef, veal and pork. FRIGHT DOME CELEBRATES 15 TERRIFYING YEARS AT CIRCUS CIRCUS By Heather Turk
F
right Dome has come a long way since it first started terrorizing visitors in 2003 with just three haunted houses.
Opening for its 15th terrifying season on Sept. 29, the annual Halloween attraction promises to be bigger and better than ever this year. Comprising 250,000 scare feet of the Adventuredome at Circus Circus, guests can brave five all-new scare zones as well as six haunted houses, including the largest haunted house in Fright Dome’s history, Zombie City. According to Fright Dome’s creator, Jason Egan, the haunted house will be a 15,000-square-foot zombie metropolis with “fans being hunted at every turn.”

If that wasn’t scary enough to make visitors’ hair stand on end, Fright Dome will once again have an isolation-style haunted house for those who upgrade to a Fast Pass or VIP tour, appropriately called Lights Out. Upon entering the house, guests will immediately be separated from their group and handed an old flashlight, which will be their only guidance as they wander through the darkness alone.
celebrities. Among the many famous names who have braved Fright Dome over the years are Michael Jackson, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, David Copperfield and Stevie Wonder. “People love the adrenaline rush and the sense of not knowing what’s around the next curve,” Egan replied when asked what makes so many people want to be scared. “Our goal is to push that fear right to the edge but keep our fans safe in the process. No place else gives you six haunted houses, five scare zones, live shows and insane roller coasters and rides in the dark all in one five-acre space.” Fright Dome runs from 7 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 29 and 30 and Oct. 6-8, 12-15, 19-22 and 26-31. General admission tickets start at just $37.95. For more information, visit frightdome.com.
Both Zombie City and Lights Out will join several other fan favorite haunted houses returning for the 15th season with a twist, including Chainsaw Massacre, Killer Clowns in 4D and the holiday-themed Happy Hellidays. Additionally, guests can enjoy live entertainment throughout the night and ride several of the Adventuredome’s most popular rides in the dark. Since opening in 2003, Fright Dome has become one of the country’s premier haunted attractions and was even named one of the nation’s top 10 theme park haunted events by USA TODAY’s 10Best in 2015. Penn & Teller
THE INVENTIVE ILLUSIONISTS PENN & TELLER CONTINUE TO AMAZE AUDIENCES
By Heather Turk
P
enn & Teller are many things. They’re talented. They’re icons of magic. They’re even the longest-running act to headline the same hotel in Las Vegas history. One thing they are not, however, is complacent. Although the award-winning duo could easily rest on their laurels, they’re always hard at work continuing to make the impossible possible. Anyone who has seen their hit show at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino knows their act is constantly changing, with the pair frequently adding new bits and bringing back classic tricks they haven’t performed in years.
“If we think a new bit is good enough to be put onstage, we will pull the trigger and get it into the show,” Penn Jillette told Sunseeker shortly after the duo got back from performing in the United Kingdom in June. “Going to the U.K. had us reviving bits we only did once or twice on TV and rarely live. The show order changes all the time. We did the U.K. tour show order at the Rio leading up to right before we left. It’s already different since we’ve been back.” Despite the conventional Las Vegas wisdom that acts don’t need to change their show that often because the audience always changes, Jillette noted that he and Teller didn’t get into show business to get out of show business. “Typically, you develop your show on the road, nail things down and then you come to Las Vegas and play golf,” Jillette explained. “But why would Teller and I play golf when we could be writing a show?” Penn & Teller’s show at the Rio actually features some of the most challenging illusions the duo has ever done in their 42 years together, including making an African pigmy spotted elephant disappear while surrounded by audience members. That bit took six years to master before Penn & Teller finally brought it to the stage. The magicians also recently debuted their version of a classic doves and silks act, done by The Great Tomsoni & Co., that took two years to perfect.

“Singers do covers of their hero’s hits all the time,” Jillette said of the bit, which is unlike anything else the duo performs onstage. “This

is our version of a cover. It’s our love letter to Johnny and Pam Thompson (The Great Tomsoni & Co.). Johnny is our mentor and we loved the idea of doing his signature bit as a tribute.” While watching Penn & Teller perform their incredible feats of magic is entertaining enough, several of the illusions currently featured in their Las Vegas show are also interactive. Although some only require one or two people from the audience to assist with the trick (many of them children, as Penn & Teller’s show is family friendly), one of Penn & Teller’s most recent additions actually involves every ticket holder. Fans of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” on The CW might recall seeing the card trick—called Love Ritual—performed on the show last year with its host, Alyson Hannigan (“How I Met Your Mother”). Another interactive bit, Coins, is one of the few illusions that has remained in the production over the past few years. It involves Teller, a woman from the audience, a fishbowl and a tank of water, and leaves audiences astounded every time.
While Penn & Teller are frequently busy with outside projects and have even done extended engagements over the past couple of years on Broadway and in the U.K., fans can rest assured that they’re not leaving Las Vegas anytime soon. “[Las Vegas] is our home, our base,” Jillette stated. “My family is here and Teller has his life here, too. We will always come back to Vegas. We love it here. Vegas has been good to us.” “Plus,” Jillette joked, “we are 55 stories high on the side of the Rio, so it’s kind of expected.” Penn & Teller perform Saturday through Wednesday at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $75, plus tax and fees. Be sure to catch Penn & Teller after each performance in the theater’s lobby for a free post-show meet and greet. For more information, visit riolasvegas.com.
“It’s a beautiful piece of magic that Teller performs wonderfully,” Jillette said. “It’s a real audience favorite.” Even though Penn & Teller tend to keep a few fan favorites in the Las Vegas production, Jillette knows it’s because they’re always changing their show and adding new material that’s led to their success at the Rio over the past 16 years. “People come back to see the show a bunch of times over the course of a few years,” Jillette said. “We love to work and I think that helps. We are also lucky enough to do a good deal of TV and that helps with exposure.”

SHOWCASES WAYNE NEWTON’S LIFE AND CAREER By Jack Bulavsky

he Shenandoah Valley is a geographic and cultural region of western Virginia and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Casa de Shenandoah is the 52-acre estate of Wayne Newton, Mr. Las Vegas himself. Newton was born in Virginia and Casa de Shenandoah, which he personally designed and built from 197376, is a lush canvas of his early childhood memories, featuring natural artesian ponds and waterfalls, swans, geese and a variety of exotic birds.

Named one of the Top Five Homes in the country in 2008 by CBS News (others included The White House), Casa de Shenandoah, now a historic landmark, is a showcase of a lifetime of Newton’s memorabilia. It displays gifts from legendary celebrity friends such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole and Jack Benny, Newton’s personal collection of rare automobiles, his vast collection of ribbons and trophies, a private jet and his horses—his purebred Arabian horses. The tour begins with a short film about Newton and how he built his home. Guests are then transported across the street to the estate. According to Anna Long, Group Sales Manager, visitors are amazed when they realize how large 52 acres really is, discover all the water features and exotic animals, and learn they can board and walk through Newton’s private jet. “They can’t believe that something like this exists in the desert,” she said. “And they are especially taken with the mansion and its many rooms, Wayne’s Native American artifacts and his tribute to the military. Since opening, visitors have told us they could spend hours exploring the estate and all it has to offer. So we recently enhanced the

Blue Man Group’s wardrobe department makes approximately 80 costumes a year for the band
MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE GO BEHIND THE SEAMS WITH BLUE MAN GROUP’S HEAD OF WARDROBE
By Heather Turk
A
fter years of working in the wardrobe departments for Cirque du Soleil’s “Mystère” and Wynn Las Vegas’ “Le Rêve,” Belinda Hodsden quite vividly remembers the reaction she received when she told people she was accepting a job as the Head of Wardrobe for Blue Man Group’s Las Vegas show in 2013. “People said, ‘Why? It’s black jammies!’” Hodsden recalled with a laugh. “And I was like, ‘You have no idea.’” While Hodsden acknowledges that the Blue Men never change costume during their show at Luxor Hotel and Casino, that doesn’t mean that she and the five other people who make up their wardrobe department don’t have plenty to do. Not only do they work on the different outfits the Blue Men put on over their costumes during the show—which include a colorful Calypso number, a Flavor Flav-inspired jacket and an electronic video suit—but they also make the band’s costumes and help out with various other aspects of the production.
attached. They’re also working on new top covers for the video suit, which will have all of the electronics slipped into them. “We need something that’s waterproof and fireproof because the Blue Men are wearing electronics and they’re sweating,” Hodsden explained. “There’s a lot of research and development that happens here. We are always striving to learn new things.” Blue Man Group performs nightly at 7 and 9:30 p.m. (dark Sept. 27 and Oct. 31), with an additional 4 p.m. performance on Sept. 2. Allegiant passengers receive special deals when they purchase their tickets onboard. Ask your flight attendant for details.
Working for such an innovative production, Hodsden said the wardrobe department is constantly experimenting to make things better. After they noticed the Flavor Flav clocks were cracking when the Blue Men would throw them into a basket backstage during the show, they built an indestructible clock out of foam. Currently, they’re working on a lighter fruit hat for the Calypso outfit, made from a one-piece mold instead of having individual fruit pieces 24

“We have some of the most well-rounded costume technicians on the Strip,” Hodsden said. “Usually most [wardrobe] departments divide talent, but I need everyone to do everything because I only have one or two people here at a time. So, they need to be able to dress the show, do prosthetic makeup, pattern and build costumes and even sweat fit copper to build pipes themselves.”

uests visiting Madame Tussauds Las Vegas have long been able to see how they measure up to some of their favorite celebrities, including Shaquille O’Neal, but the wax attraction’s latest installation lets visitors see how the size of their hand compares to President Donald Trump’s. Madame Tussauds’ recently renovated wax hand station debuted in mid-March and features wax molds of several celebrity handprints on the wall, as well as a wax mold of the President’s hand on display. Visitors can compare the size of their hand to the various handprints or pay a nominal fee to create their own keepsake 3-D wax mold to see how it measures up side by side. Priced at just $20 for adults and $15 for children (double hand molds cost $30), the process takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and includes a preservation kit so participants know how to care for their hand at home.
Madame Tussauds Las Vegas has always been known for its interactive exhibits, which include the chance to be a guest on “Jerry Springer,” tee off against Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, and step into the trashed hotel room from The Hangover to snap a photograph with Bradley Cooper and Mike Tyson. The mold process itself is fairly simple. After sanitizing their hands, participants stick one hand into ice water for 30 seconds before having a lotion applied to ensure the wax mold will easily slide off. The guest’s hand is then dipped three to six times into hot wax (175 degrees) in the exact position they want their mold to be. The wax mold is later dipped into the desired color(s) guests choose for their creation, dipped into ice water and dried off before being given to the guest. So that the mold can be proudly displayed, the wax edges are folded over at the wrist to create a level edge allowing the hand to stand up by itself.

f you’re a performer, nothing says you’ve made it in Las Vegas quite like headlining The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
The Entertainment Capital of the World’s premier showroom, only the biggest stars grace The Colosseum’s stage: acts like Céline Dion, Elton John and Jerry Seinfeld. Coming off of a year that saw Sebastian Maniscalco being named Just for Laughs’ Stand Up Comedian of the Year and having Showtime’s most watched comedy/variety
special—“Sebastian Maniscalco: Why Would You Do That?”—it should come as no surprise that the frantic funnyman will be bringing his national tour of the same name to the prestigious venue on Oct. 8. “I remember seeing Céline there with my sister and mother about 10 years back,” Maniscalco told Sunseeker. “When I walked into the theater I thought to myself, ‘I would love to play here one day.’” While Maniscalco might seem like stand-up comedy’s latest overnight success story, he’s definitely paid his dues since moving from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1998 to pursue his dream. In fact, Maniscalco has been playing smaller clubs in Las Vegas for the past 15 years and remembers one gig where he was literally competing with the Fountains of Bellagio for the audience’s attention, as he was performing in front of glass windows with the fountains going off behind him. “It may have taken me a bit longer to make it, but I never gave myself a time limit,” Maniscalco said. “I remember Andrew Dice Clay telling me, ‘You can’t look at the guy next to you and wonder why he got something you didn’t.’ I knew I just had to stick to my guns, so I remained patient and worked as a waiter to supplement my income.”

Despite the tour having the same name as his hit Showtime special, Maniscalco assured fans that he’s consistently writing new material and will have “pretty much an entirely new act” by the time he gets to Las Vegas. “I’m already working toward my next special, so people can expect sort of a ‘best of’ from the Showtime special along with a good portion of new material,” he said. The Vegas Golden Knights will be calling the new T-Mobile Arena home, which is fitting, as the stadium is just about as old as the team itself. The arena, which can accommodate over 17,000 people for hockey, 18,000 for basketball and even more for boxing and UFC fights, is a haven for events of all kinds, including music and comedy. It also has food on every level. Shake Shack and Pizza Forte are Vegas favorites that now have an outlet in the arena, with California classic Pink’s Hot Dogs opening its first Vegas location inside along with Chronic Tacos. There’s even more food and drinks outside! Located on the Las Vegas Strip between New York New York Hotel and Casino, and the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino, it’s easy to turn a night on the town into a night at the games. Guests will have no problem taking advantage of all the food
and services in and around the T-Mobile Arena. Just make sure you finish your outside eats before you enter. Hockey, however, is really what is bringing all eyes on Vegas, with the Golden Knights attracting some of the biggest hockey stars. Head Coach, Gerard Gallant, was previously Head Coach of the Florida Panthers, and achieved a club-record of 47 wins and 103 points. Goalie Marc-André Fleury is a three-time Stanley Cup winner who, with Team Canada, brought the gold medal back to Canada at the 2010 Olympic games. He will be switching off with fellow goalie, Calvin Pickard, who helped Canada win the 2016 World Championships. A roster of seasoned professionals and new faces to the league will join them. The Wildlife Habitat is home to a beautiful flock of Chilean flamingos
FLAMINGO FUN
HOW THE FLAMINGO LAS VEGAS LIVES UP TO ITS NAME By Eliza Welsh
T
he Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas offers visitors and locals a rare chance to view wildlife up close on the Las Vegas Strip. The habitat is nestled on the hotel’s 15-acre grounds and features a variety of birds, fish and turtles. The habitat took shape in the early 1990s when six towers were added to Flamingo Las Vegas, which caused the pool area to be covered in shade. The then-president decided to relocate the pool to a sunnier area and created The Wildlife Habitat in its place, allowing visitors and animals to enjoy the habitat in the shade! The lush 4-acre habitat features gardens and ponds that house 50 different species of exotic and local animals. Flamingo Island, a fan favorite, pays homage to the hotel’s name, and is home to a colorful flock of Chilean flamingos. The habitat also houses two rescued brown pelicans, sacred Ibis and a variety of duck species. Perhaps the most beloved resident is Captain, a Green-Winged Macaw, who loves to pose for pictures. Japanese koi, white sturgeons, albino channel catfish, goldfish and many other types of
fish also call the habitat home. Look along the shoreline and see groups of water turtles basking in the sun. Signs are displayed throughout the grounds with information on each different animal. Bonus: pelican and flamingo feedings take place every day at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. This family-friendly habitat provides guests with a conveniently located peaceful break before drinks or dinner along the bustling Las Vegas Strip. It is the perfect educational attraction for nature lovers and children. The verdant grounds, streams surrounded by sparkling waterfalls and a colorful collection of animals make for perfect photo opportunities. Best of all, the habitat is free of charge and open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is accredited by the Zoological Association of America and has been deemed a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Association. he plethora of Mexican restaurants in the metropolitan Phoenix area is so vast it could take years to eat your way through all of them. Whether your focus is regional Mexican cuisine from places like Oaxaca and Hidalgo, or intense spice levels from restaurants using New Mexican Hatch chile peppers, there’s a wealth of diversity from which to choose. Here are a few spots to start your fun and satisfying food journey.

A bold and flavorful Chico Malo taco
“bad boy,” but there’s nothing negative about the food. Bold and fresh are two words that are easily conjured after a few bites of menu options like the Tierra salad, which features grilled radicchio mixed with vegetables, dried fruits, seeds and a zesty dressing. There are also innovative taco options, such as the Duck Carnitas. The tender meat is topped with flavorful garnishes like cherry pecan mole, candied pecans and pickled onions. Fruity sangrias are among the many cocktail choices. chicomalo.com
GALLO BLANCO
This popular spot reopened in the summer of 2017 in a new downtown location after a hiatus. Luckily, fans had chef and owner Douglas Robson’s sister spot, Otro Café, to satisfy their love of his culinary delights. Sink your teeth into one of the Torta sandwich options. House-made warm and soft telera bread is stuffed with your choice of filling, including carne asada (beef) and al pastor (pork). The breakfast dishes are revolutionary. The Huevos Rancheros, with the eggs sitting on two zesty, cheesy corn quesadillas, tempt taste buds, as do the crunchy and savory Chilaquiles, a layered egg dish. Two different types of Pozole—a flavor-filled, satisfying hominy soup— are perfect on cool fall days. galloblancocafe.com

MISSION: ENJOYMENT SPEND A DAY IN SAN FRANCISCO’S MISSION DISTRICT By H. Wadowski
W
hile there’s plenty to see and do in Northern California, Allegiant passengers flying into the Bay Area should definitely make some time to visit the Mission District. Located in east-central San Francisco, this vibrant neighborhood is home to some of the city’s best street art, shops and restaurants, making it easy for guests to spend an entire day exploring everything it has to offer.
Guests can then spend the afternoon browsing through the many independent stores on Valencia Street, such as the bean-to-bar chocolate factory Dandelion Chocolate and the vintage clothing boutique Schauplatz, and visiting Mission Dolores on 16th Street. Not only is the striking parish one of the two oldest structures in San Francisco, but many of the city’s pioneers are buried in the adjacent cemetery.
The Mission District is also home to The Chapel, a historic music venue that was originally built as a mortuary in 1914. Located on Valencia Street, this beautifully renovated building hosts an array of acts, like hypnagogic pop singer Ariel Pink, who will have a three-night residency at the venue Oct. 14 through 16. The Chapel has its own bar and restaurant as well, making it the perfect place to end the night. For more on everything the Mission District has to offer, search Mission District on sftravel.com.
Balmy Alley has one of the most concentrated collections of murals in San Francisco
Visitors can also see San Francisco’s largest concentration of murals on display in the Mission District. Balmy Alley off 24th Street, in particular, offers guests a real mural immersion, with several pieces making bold political statements. When you’ve worked up an appetite again, the acclaimed restaurant Foreign Cinema on Mission Street has been a staple of the area for 18 years. Featuring an ever-changing menu of California-Mediterranean-influenced dishes, diners can enjoy such dinner specialties as the 62

Visitors can start their morning with brunch at one of the city’s hottest restaurants, Universal Cafe, which has been visited by such celebrities as Julia Roberts, Helen Mirren and Jared Leto. Located on 19th Street, the restaurant serves a menu of seasonal New American fare, with such early and mid-morning favorites as the French toast with pumpkin seed streusel, apple butter and Chantilly, and the house sourdough English muffin sandwich made with fried egg, bacon, avocado-endive salad with chervil vinaigrette and cheddar.
Four-Peppercorn Duck Breast and Madras Curry Sesame Fried Chicken, while watching films like The Namesake (through Sept. 3) and The Princess Bride (Sept. 4 through Oct. 1) play in the outside courtyard.

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT
I completed my first trip on Allegiant. Through the entire process, your team surpassed my expectations. Your equipment was nice and the service from the pilot to the flight attendants was first class.
– Russ G, California
This past year alone I have been able to fly four times and attend my sister’s senior high school events along with my family. So thank you, Allegiant, for everything. From creating low fare routes, to helping me keep my sanity as I get through grad school far away from home, to employing individuals who are helpful and kind.
- Katie S, Louisiana
Great cabin crew and the Captain made a couple good wise cracks that had the passengers laughing. Just want to say that Rockford, Illinois is a better place with Allegiant here. We are working on making Rockford a “Top-25 City” and having Allegiant here is a big piece of making that happen.

ens of thousands flock annually to the Life is Beautiful Festival held from Sept. 22-24 in downtown Las Vegas. While most come for the top-notch musical acts, the event is also a celebration of food, art and culture. A collection of murals and art installations remain on downtown’s landscape far after the end of the event—many at the area’s most famous hotels. Whether you book your stay at one of these popular properties, or just stroll in for a visit, be sure to view the art and immerse yourself in the Life is Beautiful experience.
GOLDEN NUGGET
Although there isn’t a mural on the property, a trip downtown isn’t complete without a visit to this charming hotel. Located within the heart of Fremont with easy access to the festival, this hotel is one of the most highly rated properties in the downtown area. From the pool, considered by the Travel Channel as one of the most extreme with its 200,000 gallon shark tank aquarium, to great restaurants such as Lillie’s Asian Cuisine, the Golden Nugget has something for everyone to enjoy. goldennugget.com
EL CORTEZ
Listed in the U.S National Register of Historic Places, the El Cortez brings forth the nostalgia of old-school downtown Las Vegas and remains one of the oldest establishments on Fremont Street. Classic photos of Bugsy Siegel and Jackie Gaughan (previous owner of the hotel) can be seen in the hotel, reflecting the 1950s to1970s era. Take a peek at the vintage car near the front entrance of the hotel and view the beautiful murals inspired by the Life is Beautiful Festival in the parking garage. Do not hesitate to explore this beloved local favorite in downtown Las Vegas. elcortezhotelcasino.com

CELEBRATING ALLEGIANT’S FLIGHT ATTENDANTS By Kerry McGee
W
elcoming, courteous, patient and flexible, are just a few words that we heard when we asked our Team Members to describe our flight attendants. We are saying “thank you” a little more often during the month of October as we celebrate Flight Attendant Appreciation Month. Every October our Team Members and leaders go all out to show appreciation for all of our hardworking flight attendants who dedicate their days to making trips for millions of travelers enjoyable. “Our flight attendants are truly a part of our success, providing a fantastic customer experience. I’m so proud of them for what
they do each and every day, working hard despite many challenges,” said Tracy Tulle, Vice President of Inflight Services. “As we dedicate this month to celebrate them, we just want them to know how much we appreciate them and all that they do.” In addition to celebrating our flight attendants, we’re going pink to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our Team Members purchase and wear pink Allegiant apparel, and flight attendants sell pink lemonade onboard with a portion of both proceeds donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In 2016, we raised more than $25,000, and we know that this year will be just as successful!
“OUR FLIGHT ATTENDANTS ARE TRULY A PART OF OUR SUCCESS, PROVIDING A FANTASTIC CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. I’M SO PROUD OF THEM FOR WHAT THEY DO EACH AND EVERY DAY, WORKING HARD DESPITE MANY CHALLENGES” - TRACY TULLE, VICE PRESIDENT OF INFLIGHT SERVICES

TIME TO BE A KID AGAIN ALLEGIANT IS PROUD OF ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH MAKE-A-WISH® By Christopher Lewis
R
Photo of Rowen and the crew courtesy of Make-A-Wish Nebraska; the Vertin family courtesy of Betty Vertin
owen Vertin, 8, of Hastings, Nebraska, can tell you everything you would ever want to know about “America Ninja Warrior.” He can tell you which town all of the competitors are from and where they qualified. He knows at which obstacle they were knocked out last year. He follows “America Ninja Warrior” like kids followed baseball decades ago. He’s just like any other kid following his favorite athletes in his favorite sport. But Rowen faces a challenge far different than most other kids face. Rowen, along with two of his brothers (Max, 11 and Charlie, 6), is diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness; eventually affecting the heart and lungs. Rowen, for the most part, gets around with the assistance of a motorized scooter and has recently lost the ability to run and walk up and down the stairs. It’s a life that’s far from easy, but Rowen and his family have each other and do the best they can. But thanks to Allegiant and Make-A-Wish®, Rowen, his five siblings and his parents, got a chance to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip in June to Las Vegas for VIP access to the taping of “America Ninja Warrior.” Rowen was able to tour the course, spend time with the hosts, and even meet some of his favorite athletes. It was a moment where he could forget about treatments and the struggles of living with Duchenne and just be allowed some time to be a kid again.
“I was amazed at the impact this trip had on all my children,” said Betty Vertin, Rowen’s mom. “It was the best day of Rowen's life, and my other kids got it and were happy for him. I will always remember the smiles on their faces as a famous ninja warrior walked towards Rowen; only they were watching Rowen, not the warrior. They wanted to see his happiness.” Since 2012, Allegiant has been a proud supporter of Make-A-Wish® and has donated over 800 Wish flights and over $1.5 million in the renovation of Make-A-Wish® of Southern Nevada’s headquarters. Additionally, Allegiant donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish®. To find out how you can help make wishes come true, visit wish.org.

Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat.
