GET READY TO PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999
Often regarded as one of Las Vegas’ top tribute artists, Jason Tenner’s hit Prince tribute show, “Purple Reign,” recently moved to Tropicana Las Vegas. Performing a selection of the iconic singer’s greatest hits, Tenner’s uncanny resemblance to Prince and pitch-perfect vocals are sure to have ticket holders doing a double take. While some audience members have even gone on to say that Tenner is better than Prince, Tenner laughs off the praise, noting how Prince was truly “otherworldly.” The key to Tenner’s success, according to the man himself, is understanding Prince’s spirit and motivation. “I don’t impersonate Prince onstage,” Tenner said. “I just make audiences feel like they’re watching him.” For tickets, go to troplv.com.

The entrance to Robert Irvine’s Public House
A STAR IS BORN ROBERT IRVINE’S PUBLIC HOUSE COOKS UP A WHOLE NEW CELEBRITY CHEF RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE By Heather Turk
R
obert Irvine’s Public House inside Tropicana Las Vegas isn’t like any other celebrity chef restaurant on the Strip.
“I’ve literally been in Las Vegas every chance I get since the restaurant opened (in July 2017),” Irvine told Sunseeker. “At first I didn’t even want a restaurant in Las Vegas. I didn’t know how it would be any different from all of the other celebrity chef restaurants there. But after asking myself, ‘How can I be different?’ I realized the answer was me being there.” Not only is Irvine often at the restaurant in between his busy filming schedule (the popular TV personality known for such programs as Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible” is currently hosting “The Robert Irvine Show” on The CW), but he personally trained every staff member
at the eatery. He’s also working hard to use his fame as a platform to help the troops and those less fortunate, frequently hosting charitable dinners at the restaurant and offering military guests 15 percent off their bill. “This isn’t about my ego,” Irvine said. “It’s about doing the right thing. Everything we do has a charity component to it.”
“I don’t think there are any losers on the menu,” Irvine said. “There’s something for everyone.” Irvine means that, too. The fit chef noted that anything on the menu can be made healthy by request. “If someone has allergies or doesn’t want something, we have the ability to create dishes on the fly—they just need to ask,” Irvine said. “We plan on changing the menu four or five times a year to keep things fresh, but if there’s something someone liked that’s no longer offered, so long as they call in advance we can make it for them. We want people to have an amazing experience.”

There’s also an amazing Beet & Goat Cheese Salad on the menu that was developed for his wife, professional wrestler Gail Kim. Other must-try selections include the Hickory Smoked Chicken Wings made with Irvine’s signature Blue Flame Buffalo Sauce, the chimichurri Steak & Frites and the Spotted Dick.

DINE LIKE A LOCAL THREE RESTAURANTS TO RELISH OFF OF THE LAS VEGAS STRIP By Heather Turk

poiler alert: Las Vegas locals don’t always eat on the Strip. In fact, some of the city’s tastiest dishes are actually found off-Strip at these dining gems. One bite of their fabulous fare and it’s easy to see why these three restaurants are considered local favorites.
ANDRE’S BISTRO & BAR
Long before celebrated chef André Rochat wowed Las Vegas visitors with his exquisite French cuisine, he was a local favorite thanks to his eponymous restaurant downtown. Last January, he opened this intimate bistro-tavern in southwest Las Vegas, serving a variety of French classics and American favorites for dinner and Saturday/Sunday brunch. In addition to sumptuous dinner entrées like Rochat’s signature Sautéed Dover Sole Veronique and the tender Braised Lamb Shank, guests can enjoy plat-du-jour specials like the Duck a l’Orange for both dinner and brunch. A
variety of delightful desserts are available, too, like the creamy Chocolate Pot de Crème. andresbistroandbar.com
GRAPE STREET CAFÉ, WINE BAR & CELLAR
A Summerlin favorite for more than two decades, this casually elegant restaurant relocated to Downtown Summerlin in late 2014. Known for its impeccable Italian dishes and extensive wine list, the restaurant treats guests to a variety of palate-pleasing items for lunch and dinner, including a selection of pastas, pizzas (try the Prosciutto with caramelized onions), salads and sandwiches. Dinner specials are available, too, like the spicy Sesame Ahi Tuna drizzled in wasabi aioli. Whatever dish you decide on, be sure to order the flavorful Strawberry Crostini made with Brie, prosciutto, basil, extra virgin olive oil and 18-year balsamic to share with the table—it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser! grapestreetdowntownsummerlin.com

This Henderson hideaway, already known for its creative breakfast and lunch dishes, recently began serving dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Spotlighting cultural favorites from around the world, the dinner offerings are diverse, with highlights like the Thai-inspired Kabocha Curry (also available for lunch) and the Filipino Pork Belly Pinkabet; and everything is always prepared to perfection. Not only does each bite explode with flavor, but the beautifully presented dishes are true culinary works of art. Seriously, nothing at the restaurant disappoints. Even the complimentary items that come to the table upon being seated—churritos (cinnamon-sugar tortilla chips) with Nutella dip for breakfast, mattitos (tortilla chips) with housemade salsa for lunch and grilled bread with spiced butter for dinner—will impress discerning diners! servedlv.com

ntertainment enthusiasts will always find something new to enjoy while visiting Las Vegas—after all, it isn’t called the Entertainment Capital of the World for nothing! In fact, the city welcomed several new shows in late 2017 that are all worthy additions to its already-impressive entertainment lineup.
“MAGIC VS MUSIC”
“THE TOM GREEN SHOW”
One of Hollywood’s funniest comedians kicked off his first Las Vegas residency this past October inside the intimate Back Room theater at Bally’s Las Vegas. Joined by a special guest opening act, the show features the former MTV funnyman reminiscing about his life and career and commenting on the world around him. While it doesn’t get too political, it does address the fact that the former “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant technically knows the President of the United States. Other hilarious highlights include when Green shows footage of some of his favorite television bits over the years and clips from the various movies he’s starred in. It’s a laugh-a-minute trip down memory lane fans are sure to love! tomgreenvegas.com

A show that definitely knows how to make a splash, this internationally-acclaimed water spectacular made its North American debut at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino last October. Featuring a cast of more than 30 international artists, acrobats and dancers performing in a 180-degree setting, the water-themed show pays tribute to almost every water-related thing you can think of, from pirates to the Titanic to Venetian gondoliers. There’s even a performance by a human water fountain, former Guinness World Records holder Dickson Oppong. The diverse production features a few acts that don’t involve water, too, including a performance by “America’s Got Talent” semifinalist Silvia Silvia who somehow manages to shoot an apple off of her head during her intense archery act! wow-vegas.com

Jason Tenner performing one of “Purple Reign’s” more risqué numbers
A TRIBUTE FIT FOR MUSIC ROYALTY
JASON TENNER BRINGS THE MUSIC OF PRINCE BACK TO THE STRIP WITH ‘PURPLE REIGN’ By Heather Turk
O
ne of Las Vegas’ top tribute artists may have never gotten his start if not for a Halloween costume back in 1996. That’s when Jason Tenner, better known now as the front man of the long-running Prince tribute show “Purple Reign,” decided to dress up like Prince for a Halloween party at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. After being stopped by countless people asking to take photos with him, he decided to dress up like Prince and start playing some of Prince’s songs in the funk and disco cover band he was in, The Mothership Connection. The rest, as they say, is history, and for the past two decades, Tenner has been performing as the iconic musician at various venues all over Las Vegas. This past November, Tenner made his move back to the Strip, debuting “Purple Reign” inside the historic Tropicana Theater.
Apollonia. While Tenner said the version of the show audiences see now was always “the end game,” it took him a long time to be able to generate enough revenue to support a cast in addition to a four-piece band. In the beginning, Tenner said he used to leave the stage and come back dressed as Morris Day himself, with his little brother playing the part of The Time’s Jerome Benton. While Tenner was finally able to afford full-time guys to take on the roles in 2001, it wasn’t until about a year ago he added the Apollonia section into the show. With the move to Tropicana, Tenner has also added a second full-time female dancer, some new costumes and reworked all of the drum sounds to be more “sonically authentic” to what fans hear on Prince’s original recordings.
“I love the venue, it’s such a beautiful room,” Tenner told Sunseeker just days after the show’s grand opening at Tropicana Las Vegas. “I really like the setup, as people pay more attention to what we’re presenting in a theater [than inside a nightclub], yet there’s still room for everyone to get up and dance.”
“We’re constantly rotating songs, too,” Tenner noted. “The first part of our show (which features such hits as ‘Let’s Go Crazy,’ ‘Raspberry Beret’ and ‘1999’) is pretty set, but the second part we change up depending on how the audience feels. If they’re not particularly energetic, sometimes I’ll even stop what I’m doing and ask what they want to hear. It adds an extra level of engagement and usually ups the energy.”
Not just a celebration of Prince’s music, “Purple Reign” pays tribute to the movie “Purple Rain,” too, with sections of the show dedicated to Morris Day and The Time and
A true musician who sings live and plays his own instruments, Tenner said Prince gives him a “level of greatness to aspire to” when he works on his own material.

“If you go on YouTube and watch his videos, he was really amazing,” Tenner noted. “He was so honest as an artist and rarely ever made a mistake. I know whenever I release my own music that I’m going to be compared to him, so I always have to make sure what I’m doing is right.” The night before Prince’s death, Tenner actually bought thousands of dollars’ worth of camera equipment to start filming his own music videos, but had to put his original material on hold when Prince fans turned to him and “Purple Reign” to help celebrate the late singer’s legacy. While “Purple Reign” took up the past year and a half of Tenner’s life as interest in the production grew, the talented performer said he’s now ready to focus on his own music again.
Tickets range from $49.98 to $99.99, plus tax and fees. Guests must be 16 years of age or older to attend the show. For more information, visit troplv.com.

That doesn’t mean “Purple Reign” is ending anytime soon, though. In fact, Tenner is excited about the possibilities the show’s new home gives him as an artist. Not only is he selling his own music inside the Tropicana Theater’s gift shop, but he’s also hoping to perform some original material at “Purple Reign” afterparties in the resort’s Havana Room on Friday and Saturday nights. Whether Tenner is onstage performing as Prince or he’s performing his own music, one thing is for certain: he’s definitely living his dream. “I figured out what I wanted to do when I was 12 years old singing the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy in a children’s choir production of ‘The Nutcracker,’” Tenner said. “The moral of my story is that Halloween can be an all-year thing. If I keep doing this for another 20 years, I’ll be happy.” “Purple Reign” performs Wednesday through Saturday at 9 p.m. (dark Jan. 3 through 6).

ime is running out to see one of the Entertainment Capital of the World’s hottest tickets.
On May 19, world-renowned singer/songwriter Elton John will perform “The Million Dollar Piano” one last time. His second critically acclaimed Las Vegas residency, the show returns to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Feb. 9 for 13 can’t-miss performances, running select nights through March 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Academy Award winner will then kick off his final 14 performances on April 28 before taking his final bow at the venue he’s called his on-again/off-again home since 2004 (John’s first residency at The Colosseum, “The Red Piano,” ran through April 2009). Since premiering in September 2011, “The Million Dollar Piano” has been one of the Strip’s most beloved productions. A toe-tapping joy from start to finish, the show features iconic hits and classic album tracks from throughout John’s five-decade career—songs like “Rocket Man” and “Indian Sunset”—enhanced by the most elaborate stage design the legendary pianist has ever used. While the focal point of the show is supposed to be the production’s namesake piano, an engineering marvel featuring more than 68 LED video screens created by Yamaha, it’s John’s pitch-perfect vocals and impressive piano-playing skills that truly steal the spotlight. Unlike some performers whose vocals sadly weaken over time, John’s singing voice is still as strong as ever. 32

Right from the moment John steps onstage and begins playing “The Bitch Is Back,” audiences know they’re in for an unforgettable night. For nearly two hours, John plays song after song, covering everything from “Your Song” to “Circle of Life.” In between select numbers, John also manages to shed some light on his career, talking about his longstanding songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin and the unique way the two write tracks together. While there’s never a moment fans aren’t tapping their feet or bobbing their heads along to the music (just try to sit still during “Bennie and the Jets” or “I’m Still Standing”), one highlight during the show is when John performs “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” As he sings the number, a video timeline plays on a giant screen behind him spotlighting some of his achievements both professionally and personally. Whether it’s his first Las Vegas residency, his work with Disney or his two sons (who surprised audiences by joining John onstage as he played “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” during a recent performance), it’s amazing to see just how much the prolific performer has accomplished over the years. As if seeing John perform live wasn’t memorable enough, for those who want a truly unforgettable concert experience, ticket holders in the first few rows of the theater are actually allowed to come onstage toward the end of the show and dance around John and his $1.3 million-dollar piano while he performs. THE BRAZILIAN BLUE MAN VINICIUS MASTEGUIM’S JOURNEY FROM REALITY SHOW CONTESTANT TO LAS VEGAS PERFORMER By Heather Turk
W
hile audiences may never know where the inquisitive bald and blue characters that make up Blue Man Group come from, one of the cast members in the Las Vegas production has an interesting story about how he became a Blue Man. Back in 2013, Vinicius Masteguim won a reality show to become the first Brazilian Blue Man. Blue Man Group held auditions in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador for the competition in 2012, and Masteguim was the only semifinalist from São Paulo to make the cut. He joined four other semifinalists (all from Rio de Janeiro) as they trained for nearly two months to become a Blue Man in New York. “It was unbelievable,” Masteguim recalled. “It was the first time I was ever out of the country.”
Photos by Lindsey Best
A former music student at one of the biggest conservatories in Latin America, the Conservatory of Tatuí, Masteguim knew that he could learn to play Blue Man Group’s signature PVC pipes easily. However, with no prior acting experience, Masteguim admitted that he was a bit worried about “understanding the character.”
filmed for YouTube, the Rede Globo TV network in Brazil actually aired the moments when the semifinalists and eventual winner were picked. In the end, it was Masteguim’s ability to “listen well, take notes and adapt” that impressed the show’s judges—Blue Man Group’s co-founders Chris Wink and Phil Stanton and Director of Performer Development Randall Jaynes—the most and led to him winning the competition. Since becoming the first—and still only—Brazilian Blue Man, Masteguim has appeared in several Blue Man Group productions, including Chicago, Boston and onboard the Norwegian Epic. While his original goal in life was to become a musician, Masteguim said he’s more interested in acting now, and that Blue Man Group helped change his path in life. “I just love the connection we have with the audience,” he said. “It’s what motivates me every night. We help people forget about everything, and they end up seeing a lot of themselves in the Blue Man character. It’s really such a beautiful experience.”

A HONKY-TONK HANGOUT JOHN RICH’S REDNECK RIVIERA CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN LAS VEGAS By Heather Turk
R
edneck Riviera at Grand Bazaar Shops may be celebrating its first anniversary on Feb. 16, but the country music bar’s owner, John Rich of the multi-platinum country duo Big & Rich, is thinking about starting the party a bit early. Known for having live country music each night, the Strip venue adjacent to Bally’s Las Vegas will start showcasing bands from Nashville’s renowned Broadway entertainment district on Jan. 7. “January 7 is also my birthday, so we might have a little party that night,” Rich, who performs at the venue approximately once a month, told Sunseeker. “We might tie our anniversary celebration into January 7, too. I know it’s jumping the gun a little, but it’s my bar—I’ll do what I want.” The self-described “American dream chaser” definitely has a lot to celebrate this year. Not only has the opening of his first bar been a success,
but he’s opening a second Redneck Riviera in Nashville later this year. He also recently released a new hit record, Big & Rich’s “Did It for the Party”, and has a new Redneck Riviera Americanblended whiskey coming out in January. “I’ve always been a Crown Royal guy, which is a Canadian-blended whisky, so I wanted to create an American-blended whiskey,” Rich said. “I’ve spent the past six months getting the recipe just right.” Select guests can soon try Rich’s Americanblended whiskey for free at Redneck Riviera’s Heroes Bar, which offers military members, veterans and first responders their first drink on the house. “They can get whatever they want to drink, even if it’s a dirty Grey Goose martini,” Rich said. “It’s our way to thank them for their service.” The complimentary drink offer isn’t the only unique feature at Redneck Riviera, either. Behind the Heroes Bar, guests will find a 20-foot-by-30foot American flag made entirely out of beer cans. There’s also a urinal in the men’s restroom made from an old beer keg. Memorabilia hangs throughout the venue as well, including a suit Rich’s grandmother made for him out of Crown Royal bags.
“We’re just a fun, down-home joint in the epicenter of Las Vegas,” Rich said.

Golden Gate Hotel & Casino’s new majestic grand entrance off Fremont Street Experience and extended outdoor bar
AN ELEGANT EVOLUTION DOWNTOWN’S HISTORIC GOLDEN GATE HOTEL & CASINO COMPLETES ITS SECOND MAJOR EXPANSION By Heather Turk
L
as Vegas’ original hotel only continues to get better with age, as proven by Golden Gate Hotel & Casino’s most recent expansion.
The 111-year-old downtown Las Vegas property completed a major expansion last September— its second in more than 50 years following the addition of a five-story luxury hotel tower, new lobby and exterior in 2012. Long known for being home to Las Vegas’ first telephone number (1) and first address (1 Fremont St.), the hotel now features a redesigned façade, an expanded casino floor, upgraded back-of-house space and a 20-foot extension of its outdoor bar, OneBar at One Fremont Street. “Golden Gate is one of the most iconic properties in all of Las Vegas,” said Derek Stevens, CEO and owner of the hotel. “I’ve always thought Golden Gate was worth investing in and that it needs to be carefully preserved and restored. The
design process has always been a lot of fun as we’ve attempted to bring modern hotel-casino amenities into the mix while preserving the historic component that makes Golden Gate so special.” The property’s new additions inhabit land on Fremont Street once owned by La Bayou, a property Stevens purchased in 2016, and an adjacent alleyway. Stevens said once he acquired the land, “there must have been about 100 people” that suggested the changes that were eventually made, making the upgrades “a really easy decision.” In addition to adding 91 new slot machines to the now 5,000-square-foot casino floor, one of the most notable changes is the hotel’s lavish new entryway, which features 500-pound golden velvet drapes adorned with gold medallions. There’s also an eye-catching 360-degree, 24-foot tower of televisions located just inside the entryway that looks as though the TVs are emerging from a fountain, with a multi-faceted crystal chandelier at its center composed of beautiful spirals cascading downward in tiers of beveled mirror accents.
“Now is the time we love the best—when we can operate,” Stevens said. “It’s great to know Golden Gate looks better than ever at 111 years young.” The centerpiece of Golden Gate’s majestic new entryway is a 24-foot television tower with its own chandelier fixture 46

While Stevens said the “waterfall of TVs” is his favorite part of the expansion, he was quick to note that the dazzling display is closely followed by something guests don’t get to see: a massive beer cooler that’s part of the newly enhanced back-of-house space. In total, the expansion took eight months to complete.

BEWARE: WALKERS IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS! ‘FEAR THE WALKING DEAD SURVIVAL’ OPENS ON FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE By Heather Turk

he five-block, open-air entertainment district known as Fremont Street Experience has long been one of downtown Las Vegas’ most pedestrian-friendly destinations—but its newest attraction is changing all that. A collaboration between Fremont Street Experience, AMC and Triotech, a Canadian company known for producing technologically advanced, interactive award-winning attractions, “Fear the Walking Dead Survival” opened last August near the SlotZilla zip line. Inspired by AMC’s hit TV series “Fear the Walking Dead,” the multi-sensory experience invites brave guests to explore the inner workings of a military-controlled facility amidst growing rumors of an unknown, epidemic outbreak, utilize their survival skills to fight off walkers (a.k.a. zombies) and escape the bloodthirsty hoard. “SlotZilla’s success has proven that visitors— Millennials, specifically—are looking for more interactive experiences [downtown] than just putting their money in a slot machine,” Patrick Hughes, president and CEO of Fremont Street Experience, told Sunseeker.
Set on a high-traffic dirt parcel that Hughes said sat untouched for the last 20 years, “Fear the Walking Dead Survival” is part haunted house, part escape room and part 3-D motion ride. The $5 million attraction took approximately three months to build from start to finish and was created in a warehouse in Montreal before being packaged up and sent to Las Vegas. Although the attraction is the first of its kind, there are currently plans to open others nationwide. “We are tweaking things before duplicating the attraction elsewhere, though,” Hughes noted. “We’re not afraid to make adjustments and add additional expenses based on the feedback we’re receiving.” One change that Hughes said has already been implemented is the number of actors currently working inside the attraction, which has doubled from eight people to 16 in order to provide more human interaction during the spine-tingling experience. Still, even before adjustments were made, cast members from the TV show who came out for the attraction’s grand opening were “in awe.” “AMC was very particular about every single aspect of the attraction to ensure everything was consistent with the brand,” Hughes said. “When the show’s actors (Kim Dickens, Colman Domingo and Michael Greyeyes) were here, they were thrilled with the attention to detail.”

Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., spring training home of the Chicago Cubs
SPRING FORWARD ARIZONA’S CACTUS LEAGUE SEASON STARTS EARLY THIS YEAR By Charlie Vascellaro
I
t’s Arizona’s own form of “March Madness.” From its humble desert beginnings in 1947, the Cactus League has grown from a two-team fledgling circuit to 15 teams in 10 ballparks cozily consolidated within a 30-mile radius in the greater Phoenix metropolitan region. This year’s Cactus League season starts a little earlier than usual, beginning on February 23 and concluding on March 27, with opening day for the regular season scheduled for March 29. Perhaps the biggest storyline this spring: the return of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the National League champs, to their spacious and scenic Camelback Ranch spring training digs in Glendale. It marks the 10th anniversary of the team moving its spring training operations to Arizona, where they share the facility with the Chicago White Sox. This is also the fourth consecutive year that one or both of the previous year’s World Series combatants have been members of the Cactus League.
Other ballparks located on Phoenix’s west side include Surprise Stadium, home of the Kansas 60
ENTERTAINMENT
The valley’s east side is home to three of the league’s traditional locales. Scottsdale Stadium has been home to the San Francisco Giants since 1984, Mesa’s Hohokam Park was re-occupied by the Oakland A’s in 2014 when the Cubs left for Sloan Park, and Tempe Diablo Stadium has housed the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim since 1993. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ and Colorado Rockies’ Salt River Fields at Talking Stick set a new benchmark for spring training facilities when it opened in 2011.

Last year, the reigning World Series champion Chicago Cubs returned to their still-sparkling, almost brand-new Sloan Park spring home in Mesa, the league’s newest crown-jewel, where almost every game since its 2014 opening has been sold out. Not far from Camelback Ranch, the cotenant Cleveland Indians’ and Cincinnati Reds’ Goodyear Ballpark is also celebrating its 10th anniversary. Coming on the heels of the Indians’ 2016 American League championship, the Goodyear Ballpark set its new single-season attendance record in 2017, drawing 174,369 fans.
City Royals and Texas Ranger’s since 2003; the Maryvale Baseball Park, home to the Milwaukee Brewers since 1998; and the Peoria Sports Complex, major league baseball’s first two-team spring training facility, opened by the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners in 1994.

Skull Rock at Joshua Tree National Park lives up to its name
JAUNT TO JOSHUA TREE A DEFINITE DESERT DESTINATION By Amy Young
I

n southeastern California, the words Joshua Tree can mean a few different things. First, there’s the plant itself. They’re not actually trees, but succulent plants that store their own water, lovingly referred to as “the trees of the desert.” It’s also the name of vast Joshua Tree National Park, where you can see plenty of the namesake plant, along with more of nature’s eye candy. Then, there’s the town. Just as the trees are not actual trees, Joshua Tree isn’t a town, but a census-designated population (CDP). The six-hour drive from Phoenix (or three from Los Angeles) allows you to focus on the vastness of the desert, and the rock formations and shrubbery that dot its sands.
There’s plenty to do once you arrive, from hiking in the park to dining and entertainment in town. If you’re headed to Joshua Tree National Park, and you’re a newbie, stop by the Visitors Center, where helpful and friendly staff will provide a lay of the land and help plan your time to get the most out of your trip. Visit Skull Rock, a large formation with hollowed out eyes, and walk along the 1.7-mile nature trail through desert washes. Cholla Cactus Garden is a gorgeous trail through an area with a heavy concentration of cholla cacti. If you want more than a one-day visit, there are plenty of camping areas throughout the park. In Joshua Tree, shoppers will love places like Ricochet Vintage Wears and The End, where retro-cool fashion and other items make it impossible not to take something home. Good food is another treasure at every turn. Homemade pizzas at Pie for the People are a taste of New York in the desert. Crossroads Café offers classic diner fare, making it accessible for everyone with vegetarian and vegan options. The Joshua Tree Coffee Co. roasts rich brews that are served in their shop and in many other stops around town.
Joshua Tree Coffee Co. creates brews for daily energy
Joshua Tree has your nightlife needs covered, too. The legendary Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace is a hotspot for local and touring musicians. The Beatles’ Paul McCartney even stopped in for a show recently. It’s also a western-style eatery with smoked and grilled options. The Joshua Tree Saloon is a bar and restaurant with performances, open mic nights and scheduled times when you can show your talents at karaoke. Monterey Bay Aquarium features the sea life of Monterey Bay
MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM THE FAMOUS ATTRACTION HAS A FOOT IN THE PAST AND EYE ON THE FUTURE By Teresa Bitler
R
oughly 2 million people tour Monterey Bay Aquarium every year to see 35,000 creatures on display in 34 galleries. But sea life isn’t the only reason to visit the aquarium on your next trip to Monterey—the aquarium has a celebrated heritage and is working to preserve the ocean for future generations.
HERITAGE OF CANNERY ROW
Monterey Bay Aquarium traces its roots to the early 1900s, when several now defunct sardine canneries lined the oceanfront made famous by John Steinbeck in Cannery Row. Overfishing depleted local waters of marine life, though, and one by one the canneries closed. When the aquarium opened in 1984 on what was once the site of Hoven Cannery, founders hoped to do more than just showcase the unique marine life of Monterey Bay and beyond. They set out to inspire conservation.
Monterey Bay Aquarium weaves the message of ocean conservation into its exhibits. Displays and signage discuss the dangers of plastic waste, the impact climate change is having on our world and how you can make small, daily changes to save the ocean. The aquarium is also known for creating Seafood Watch, a program that encourages consumers to select seafood from well-managed fisheries, avoid those that do not engage in sustainable practices and substitute popular menu items like halibut with lesser known ones, like Arctic char. Visitors can learn more about Seafood Watch selections by downloading its app or state-specific seafood guide at seafoodwatch.org.
SEALIFE ON DISPLAY
Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Kelp Forest is one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world.
The aquarium also has an extensive display of jellies, a two-story sea otter exhibit, African penguin exhibit, touch pools and lookout points over Monterey Bay. Several daily feedings and dives show popular sea creatures interacting with staff, or you can get up-close yourself during a feeding or behind-the-scenes tour.

We were close to boarding and they called my name because someone had brought them up to the gate. How nice for one of your employees to go that extra mile and do such a wonderful thing. atalie joined Allegiant in 2015 and has met incredible people along the way. She’s a busy working mother of nine, but found a few minutes to chat with us about her passion for Allegiant, our travelers and her beautiful hometown of St. Petersburg. What gets you excited to go to work? My interactions with our travelers are just enough time to share my excitement with a first time flyer, congratulate honeymooners or provide encouragement when needed. I’m fortunate to love the people I work with too! From happy hours to holiday parties – it feels like a family here. Have you been able to take advantage of our amazing flight benefits? Yes, including great vacations, I was able to travel for a life-changing event. We adopted three children from China, and we later learned one of them, Axi, has cerebral palsy. She needed surgery in Delaware, and because of Allegiant, my husband and our children were able to visit us while we were away for five months. Wow! That’s incredible. Do you have any special memories with our travelers? I have many but this story is amazing. Last December there was a woman, close to 90 years old, sleeping in a wheelchair at baggage claim. We learned her name is Jo, but she couldn’t remember who she was here to see. I called my husband and asked if I could bring a grandmother home, and while he was confused and thought I was crazy, he said yes.
She spent the weekend with us, and after some research, we flew her back to Ohio with my 18-year-old son to ensure she made it safely. I’ve stayed in touch with her and she recently moved back to her home state of Florida. We are in the process of adding an extra bedroom in our house so our adopted Grandma Jo can live with us! What a wonderful story! You probably have a lot of great places for Grandma Jo to visit. I have too many to list! I grew up in St. Pete and my family has lived in Pinellas County since the Civil War. There are many great places to dine, including Fourth Street Shrimp serving the best seafood, and Candy Kitchen on Madeira Beach for homemade ice cream. Stroll through Sawgrass Lake Park, tucked in a residential neighborhood, it’s full of boardwalks, southern pines and tall oak trees. I love John’s Pass Village - full of eclectic shops and live music. St. Petersburg has so much offer, I could sing its praises for days!

I
t began in 1980 as a conversation between two cops kneeling in the weeds during a nighttime stakeout in the Arizona desert. U.S. Customs Agent Tommy Austin leaned over to Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Ron Cox to see if he could help him with a problem. A friend of Austin’s wife had a young son, Chris, who was on the verge of losing his battle with leukemia. All the seven-yearold wanted was to be a police officer and “catch bad guys.” Austin explained how he was running into a lot bureaucratic red tape and wondered if there was anything DPS could do for the boy. On the morning of April 29, Chris flew by helicopter from Scottsdale Memorial Hospital to DPS headquarters for one memorable visit. The family received a tour, and Chris was presented with a “Smokey the Bear” hat and an officer’s badge. It’s also when Chris became Arizona’s first and only honorary DPS officer. Chris Greicius passed away on May 3, 1980, but in the months following his passing, many of those involved during Chris’s visit would form the Make-A-Wish foundation and Officer Frank Shankwitz would serve as its first president. To date, more than 285,000 children have had their wishes granted. And until no child ever has to deal with a life-threatening
medical condition, Make-A-Wish will continue helping make wishes come true. Because nearly 75% of wishes require travel, Allegiant is proud of its role in supporting Make-A-Wish by donating over 900 Wish Flights since 2012. Additionally, Allegiant donates $1 per sale of each “Wingz Pack” aboard its flights directly to Make-A-Wish. “Our partnership with Make-A-Wish over the past five years has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. Our crews love interacting with wish families and work hard to make every wish flight an unforgettable experience,” says Hilarie Grey, Allegiant’s Director of Corporate Communications. TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN
MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel. SMOKING Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
