Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in Constellations, by hot young British playwright Nick Payne, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe. A beekeeper and a quantum physicist – the odds of them getting together are astronomical. But when their worlds do collide, they keep on colliding, as all the possibilities of their life together – good, bad and ugly.

Special thanks to Jon Coghill for taking the time to interview our artists on the Sunshine Coast. CONVERSATIONS: Angie Dunbavan By Jon Coghill Event manager Angie Dunbavan’s most treasured staff members, her mum and aunt, devour their lasagne and salad as she ducks off for an interview. They help look after her son while she travels and works on her events. Angie, the director of Red Chair in Coolum, has shouted them a beauty treatment in return, which prompts a cheeky response from her mum. ‘Sign me up for the next event,’ she says. Her brother, Phil Dunbavan, also works with her as a production manager and her husband, Andrew Veivers, is an in-demand composer/musician. ‘I’m busy, yes. Out of control at the moment,’ she says.
In 2016, Angie gathered more than 80 artists for an early morning outdoor event at Horizon Sunshine Coast Festival of Arts and Culture. Dawn Awakening was based on the Indigenous dreamtime story of the Coolum area, told by a dozen Gubbi Gubbi Dance members, 40 school kids, a part time choir of 25 and a handful of musicians. Angie and her team’s set up on the beach in the pouring rain at midnight would test most people’s resolve. But not Angie’s. ‘I loved it… it was a dream come true,’ she says.
VISUAL Arts CONVERSATIONS
The support of her family and a passion for performing arts has helped Angie deal with the stress of producing large performances and events for more than 15 years.
Community events like these have been her passion since she changed to a career in entertainment after being a social worker. Her production company specialises in council, corporate, world and community events employing jazz, classical and folk musicians. ‘To engage with the Gubbi Gubbi elders and telling the story of the dreamtime for Coolum is something I’ve really wanted to do for a long, long time,’ she said. ‘I still get great feedback about it from the community.’ Image: Horizon Festival of Arts & Culture 2016
ANGIE DUNBAVAN Angie will begin producing and developing people’s orchestras in the towns of Tamborine, Beaudesert and Boonah in May. They will perform at a fire event on the scenic rim in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

VISUAL Arts CONVERSATIONS
CONVERSATIONS: Peter Hudson By Jon Coghill Maleny’s Peter Hudson does not rely on divine intervention or spiritual enlightenment to guide his paint strokes. The 2007 Archibald finalist said his paintings – often outback landscape or pensive portraits of well known and Indigenous Australians – were the result of hours of hard work. ‘There’s no such thing as an easy job,’ Hudson said. ‘Sometimes you can battle away on a little strip of sky until it looks good, and other times it goes down quick.’ Hudson said the reward could be likened to a religious experience though. ‘If you get to the end of the day with a good little painting you feel like the king of the world.’
30
COAST ARTS AND CULTURE
Hudson’s landscapes are influenced by great Australian painters including Arthur Boyd, Sydney Nolan and Fred Williams.
‘I wanted to go there and get deeper into what happened. That’s where I took up portraiture.’ His portrait of Paul Kelly was an Archibald Prize finalist in 2007. ‘[Kelly] said what you have done is paint my mother’s eyes,’ Hudson said.
‘In Australia, particularly when you go into the centre, the light and the colours, there’s nothing like it.’
‘It [being nominated and Kelly’s compliment] gave me the confidence I was doing the right thing.’
His evolution into a portrait painter came about through his love of music, particularly Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody’s song From Little Things Big Things Grow. ‘I became obsessed by its subject matter. Kelly is such a beautiful narrator’.
Hudson struggles to explain what makes his paintings work, although a good one will usually resonate on some level with gallery owners and the public. ‘You can’t sell a painting [by talking about it], it sells itself.’
Hudson has an enduring relationship of more than 20 years with the Gurindji people and their land.
VISUAL Arts CONVERSATIONS
It’s this addiction to painting, or semiobsession with subjects, that has driven him for more than 40 years.
Peter Hudson was the winner of the 2009 Sunshine Coast Art Prize and his work is on display as part of ReView (p34).
PETER HUDSON’S Reef exhibition shows at Harvey Galleries in Mosman, Sydney, from May 26-11 June. The paintings are inspired from his 2015 tour of Far North Queensland with musician Neil Murray.

CONVERSATIONS: Linsey Pollak and Lizzie O’Keefe By Jon Coghill Experimental musician Linsey Pollak and vocal artist Lizzie O’Keefe say their cinematic music can inspire people to fight for the environment. Pollak combines the sounds of extinct and endangered animals with Lizzie’s dreamlike and emotive voice to create ‘Dangerous Song’, a live multimedia performance and album. ‘What we can do as musicians is to speak directly to the heart,’ Pollak says. ‘People mightn’t realise it but we’re in the middle of a sixth extinction crisis.’

COAST ARTS AND CULTURE
CONVERSATIONS
The multi-instrumentalist uses a digital wind instrument to reproduce the sounds of, for instance, the Humpback whale, the Mexican wolf, or an extinct Hawaiian bird called the Kaua’i O’o. The sounds are then layered and looped on top of each other. ‘There’s a degree of improvisation but a degree of structure,’ Pollak says. The duo debuted their latest instalment of Dangerous Song – ‘Blue’ – at last year’s Woodford Folk Festival and will be touring it throughout Australia and New Zealand in 2017. Their live performance is eerie as O’Keefe’s wandering vocals spar with Pollak’s music.
They are surrounded by a semitransparent screen on which amazing underwater footage is projected. ‘David Hannan is a renowned film maker from Stradbroke Island and he’s allowed us to use his beautiful films of the ocean,’ Lizzie says. Both musicians are extremely concerned about the environmentally destructive policies that are damaging the Great Barrier Reef and encouraging the Adani Coal Mine.
LINSEY POLLAK AND LIZZIE O’KEEFE Dangerous Song is a musical journey that takes us to a world of sound where humans and animals combine.
‘As Jacques Cousteau said ‘we protect what we love’, so we focus helping people fall in love with the Ocean’ Pollak says.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW With Aleesah Darlison Aleesah Darlison is a multi-published award winning children’s author living on the Sunshine Coast with her family. What sort of books do you write? I write picture books, chapter books and novels for children. My readership age group is from three years to fourteen years. Does the Coast inspire your stories? Definitely. We have some incredibly beautiful landscapes in this part of the world that are just begging to be included in stories. I want to write my next novel while sitting in one of our local rainforests just so I can draw on the feel of the bush around me and bring that into my story.
I’m always juggling a few writing projects, which I think helps keep my imagination active. At present, I’m writing the second book in my Little Witch series for girls and also starting to develop additional stories for my Space Kids series for boys. Both series will be published by Big Sky Publishing in 2017. What’s your best tip to get children interested in books and reading? Let children read any stories or story formats that they like. Even if they read the same book over and over. Whatever captures their interest is a positive. That might be footy magazines, graphic novels, animal

fact books, science-fiction novels … whatever. As long as they’re enjoying reading, that’s the important thing. What would you say to people wanting to become an author? Read as much as you can in the genre you want to write for. Attend lots of writing workshops and festivals so you can meet authors and learn about writing. Keep a journal and try to write every day. Most of all, have fun with it. Oh, and make sure you network! It’s the key to success in any industry.
