FEATURE STORY
Fisher Farms is located 10 kilometres west of Didsbury, A.B. This month we sat down with Nolan Fisher to talk about the family farm, soil and sustainable farming.
Fisher Farms B Y N ATA S H A G L E I S E R
Nolan Fisher loves the land he farms. After all, he grew up on it, in the same blue house he lives in now. Sitting on the patio in the serene morning sunshine overlooking a lush herb garden, it’s really easy for anyone to love Fisher Farms. And that’s before you even taste the produce. LEFT TO RIGHT The Fisher family farm ‘small’ garden, Nolan and the family dog, rows of beans-to-be, Azomite and soil, green onions, baby yellow zucchini, green zucchini and an edible zucchini flower
Although he grew up on a farm, Nolan wasn’t planning on doing much farming until he and wife Kari moved out to Comox, B.C. and got inspired by the number of local growers there. “It piqued our interest,” he says. “We began thinking - could we start a farm?” So they moved back to central Alberta and planted a 5,000 square foot garden. The next year they planted an acre. Then four acres. Today, Fisher Farms grows sustainable agriculture on six acres of land. That’s a lot of veggies. And a lot of weeds. “We don’t spray so it’s hard to keep up with the weeds,” says Nolan. Although they have six summer employees, the farm is always looking for volunteers to help fight the battle. They pay in vegetables, and you’re sure to get a visit from the loveable collie Sam. But if dirt and fields and manual labour aren’t your thing, you can find Fisher Farms’ green and yellow zucchinis, green onions and green, purple and yellow beans in Sunterra Market this summer. Nolan and the team use live biology to enhance the soil naturally, making these veggies nutrient-dense, clean and delicious. If you’re interested to know what live biology means, in this case we’re talking premium worm castings – the highly nutritive organic material digested by worms. Yes, worm poop. They steep it in water to make compost tea.

Fisher Farms also keeps the soil healthy by using permaculture techniques and Azomite, a naturally occuring complex ore mined from 30 million year old volcanic ash in Utah. It’s all part of being conscientious stewards of the land, something the Fishers pride themselves on. But it’s not all about the land, it’s also about people and feeding the community, says Nolan. That’s why they run a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that delivers fresh produce boxes weekly to corporate offices and urban locations.

“The program gives customers an opportunity to see where their food comes from,” he says. “It also helps bring back seasonal eating.”

As we walk through rows of zucchini, checking out the crop and of course sampling, Nolan carefully removes the flowers at the end of the immature squash and keeps them safe in his big hands. When we get back to the house, Kari happily takes the blossoms, excited to cook them up. Now that’s seasonal eating!

QUICK TIPS
Stocking up and freezing your blueberries this summer allows you to enjoy them year-round.
Blueberries are one of the easiest fruits to eat – no peeling, pitting, coring or cutting!
Blueberries can stain fabric and skin so be careful when you work with them.
Store blueberries in the fridge – fresh-picked berries will last for 10-14 days.
To avoid icy clumps of blueberries, freeze them in a single layer on a cookie sheet before bagging.
