FRESH PICK
Cherries
Cherry season is here! Follow the cherry trail with Sunterra and find out where we get our cherries. Read inside. JULY 2014
FEATURE STORY
Much of Sunterra’s produce is sourced from Alberta and the Okanagan during summer. We sat down with Sunterra Market produce buyer Arturo to talk cherries, his food buying philosophy and how often you should really shop.
Chasing the Cherry Trail B Y N ATA S H A G L E I S E R
Arturo sits in a sunny corner of the Sunterra Market head office sourcing, sampling and buying produce all day. He’s a fruit and vegetable authority. Whether we’re talking micro greens, local corn, heirloom tomatoes, purple cauliflower, limequats – you name it, he knows all about it and he knows when and where to buy it. And while we get excited every time he tells us what the Fresh Pick of the month will be, cherries, without a doubt, win the popularity contest around here. With cherry season being so short (and sweet), we revel in anticipation as the trees in B.C. begin to sprout their cherished cherries. Our excitement is largely thanks to our supplychain partner Jason, who travels from orchard to orchard and keeps Arturo updated with pictures and videos on how the crops are doing. We literally watch our cherries grow. Welcome to the cherry trail. “Some years you’re able to start picking early, some years you have to wait,” says Arturo, explaining that the decidedly short cherry season is entirely dependent on weather and elevation. That’s why we source our cherries from as far south as Osoyoos, B.C. at the start of the season, and follow the trail up the sides of the valley all the way to Vernon, catching the last ripening cherries in the northern hemisphere, sometimes even into September. It’s hyper-seasonality. Jason, who also manages Chongo’s Market, spends every Monday and Tuesday in B.C., visiting the orchards and snapping those pictures and videos he sends to Arturo. The cherries are selected by size, colour and sweetness. “We size cherries by row,” says Jason. “The bigger the cherries, the fewer fit into a row in a box. We are
definitely looking for the largest and sweetest variety of cherry available thoughout the season.” When Jason and Arturo are satisfied with the cherries, Jason fills his truck and the cherries are in Sunterra Market the next day. “We work with the best,” says Arturo. “We really have strong relationships with farmers and suppliers, that’s how we’re able to offer this calibre of fruit.” If you haven’t tasted cherries at Sunterra yet, make sure you pop in and give them a try. If the weather has behaved itself, when you bite into a cherry from Sunterra you won’t even reach the pit! Arturo says that supplying really good food is a “cool way” to connect with people, something he is always striving for. “We’re always trying to give our customers the most enjoyable experience,” he says. “When things are in season, that’s when they taste the best. That’s why we do the Fresh Pick program, to give our customers the very best taste experience.” Arturo adds that Sunterra gets small orders of produce multiple times a week so instead of buying enough produce to last you the whole week, he recommends buying only what you need for today and tomorrow. That way everything you cook is as fresh as possible. Want to learn more? Follow us on Instagram @sunterramarket. We’ll be posting delicious pictures from the orchards to our markets all summer, using #cherrytrail. See you on the trail!
