294 YEARS IN FIRE FIGHTING & DISASTER MANAGEMENT... • Istanbul Fire Brigade has gone
through many phases till now since 1714 in which the former fire brigade called “tulumbacı ocağı” was established. It was handed over to the municipalities in 1923.
• After it had served as a
directorate for a long time, it was turned into the Department of Fire Brigade in 1997.
OUR MISSION  To reduce the loss of the residants lives and properties
by responding effectively to every kind of fire and rescue related events within the standart time.
 To make firefighters well-educated and experienced in
order to respond to fire and rescue related events just in time with an accurate way.
• To serve Istanbul and its residants by minimizing loss of
human being lives and material damages which are caused by fires and natural disasters by the help of checking with the purpose of preventing and inspecting.

THE FIRE VEHICLE FOR NARROW AREAS
15 “ Fire Vehicles for Narrow Areas” , which has a high maneuverable capacity and ability to crab crawl, have begun to perform services in Istanbul.
Our aim is to increase the number of fire stations to 96 till the end of 2011.
OUR NEW STATIONS ARE DESIGNED IN OTTOMAN ARCHITECTURE.
 We have taken 24 new modern fire stations have fitness
centers, dining halls, garages, dorm rooms, sports and training areas.
 We reinforcemented most of our fire stations aganist
earthquake.
AIR RESPONSE TO FIRES
WE LEASED TWO FIRE FIGHTER AIRCRAFT between 2005 and 2008 YEARS.
WE ALSO RESPOND TO THE FIRES OUTSIDE ISTANBUL AND TO THE ONES ABROAD.
 We gave support to the
neighbouring countries for the forest fires in Georgia in 2006 and Macedonia in 2007.

Able to land on the ground and water (amphibious). Able to fill the water tanks in 12-15 seconds. Able to get 6000 liters of water in. Able to unload the water in 5 seconds.

Able to ride in 5.5 hours. Able to get water from lakes, seas, streams and reservoirs. Able to approach close to a fire up to 45 metres. Having a range of 2000 kilometres.

Members of the team has
taken specific trainings and use 12 Jet-skis.
EACH MEMBER OF STAFF TAKES A COURSE OF “BASIC FIREFIGHTER TRAINING” FOR 360 HOURS.
Every morning our staff regularly do sports directed by the physical education teachers. On demand, we also train other firefighters coming from the other cities throughout Turkey. All the year round, we arrange drills in the primary and high schools in Istanbul.

URBAN GEOLOGY STUDIES
36 “Earthquake Monitoring and Recording Stations� were founded in cooperation with the Kandilli Observatory. In the project implemented in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the quantity of damage which was likely to occur in the substructures and superstructures according to the four different, district based earthquake scenarios, was evaluated. The earthquake master plan of Istanbul was accomplished.
EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN • It includes the principles of
coordination and mutual aids among the directorates and departments of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Governor’s Office and other public bodies and private corporations and voluntary agencies.

WE MONITOR ISTANBUL FROM DCC (AKOM)
400 important crossroads
are live- monitored by the cameras controllable by the DCC (AKOM). Cameras which having specific qualities were placed
on 14 important high points of the city for the purpose of efficient response in case of a probable earthquake.
EDUCATIONS AGAINST TO DISASTERS
PROTECTION AGAINST TO DISASTERS EDUCATION DCC (AKOM) choose 5th
and 6th grade students as a target group for training about disasters.
As a consequence; if a
disaster occures, DCC trains student about how to protect theirselves fromit.
“ I AM LEARNING TO LIVE SAFELY” About
600 thousands of
books entitled “I am learning to live safely” were handed out to the teachers, students and the people coming for the educations..
WHITE TOURS • Citizens coming to DCC
(AKOM) every week within the White Tours (Beyaz Geziler) organized by The White Desk (Beyaz Masa), are introduced to DCC (AKOM) and their questions about disasters are replied to.

“THE VOLUNTARY FIREFIGHTERS” PROJECT
TO REACH ALL THE SOCIAL SEGMENTS IN THE MATTER OF EDUCATION • Istanbul Brigade carries on working
non-stop within the scope of “The Volunteer Firefighters” Project, which it initiated in order to create awareness on disasters.
• Various activities are
arranged in order to raise awareness about disasters among the children between the age of 5 and 12.

The response plans for the fire & rescuerelated incidents which were likely to occur in crucial plants and premises throughout the city, were prepared. Updating the plans continues. Drills were done in the Grand Bazaar, Taksim Metro,Ambarlı Filling Plants, Doğan Media Center and the other crucial places according to the scenarios.
