Ballet at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Read about and save the date for the Fourth of July concert with Grammy Awardnominated Marcus King headlining a concert with support from Tylor & the Train Robbers also at the Sun Valley Pavilion. In addition, with this issue, we dive into the 2023 Sun Valley Forum to learn more about our climate change condition with some fascinating, innovative people, thought-leaders, and ideas on moving forward on Earth.
AND SO SUMMER BEGINS As we watch the snow finally melt from winter with less sun than usual but more snow than most years, there’s nothing like seeing the green of the Wood River Valley pop so bright. I am eager to hit the trails, which I sometimes share with the coyotes, and I am always amazed at how nature shows us time through thaws, color, light, and shadows. There’s nothing like a stretched-out day of summer light into the evening! I intend to take full advantage of this summer season and enjoy time passing in our tiny universe of the Wood River Valley. Adding to the enjoyment of the start of summer, the rivers will be flowing, and so will the wine! This issue has an expansive section all about the Sun Valley Wine Auction, raising money for arts education, which is essential to us all. For our annual wedding section, we have a cover story featuring Meredith Stoecklein, a contemporary fashion wedding dress designer and owner of LEIN. Her connections to Sun Valley run deep, as does her love for a place that gives her solace. She graces our cover this month, and we learn all about her world with photography by Sarah Spoor. Our June issue covers some exciting events with México en el Corazón, an evening of world-class mariachi and folkloric dance, and Ballet Sun Valley presenting National Dutch 22

“In our current recovery world postCOVID, it’s more important than ever to go out, be part of the community, experience it and participate in it,” says BODYTRAFFIC Founder and Artistic Director, Tina Finkelman Berkett. “BODYTRAFFIC brings the power of live performance through dance and music with hopes of making it accessible to all.” With the core mission of fostering growth in the dance community, BODYTRAFFIC provides training opportunities for dancers at all stages in their careers, from beginner to professional. GOLD MINE CONSIGN RE-OPENS
New manager Molly! Goodyear takes the helm The Community Library Association announces the re-opening of the Gold Mine Consign store in Ketchum with new manager Molly! Goodyear, who brings her experience and extensive Wood River Valley community connections. “It’s an honor to continue the legacy of the Gold Mine Consign store, which was in such good hands with the previous manager, Lara Spencer,” says Goodyear. “I’m so excited to be part of The Community Library team again. It will be fun to help people look and feel their best while supporting our Valley’s sustainability efforts and doing deeply fulfilling work.” Goodyear has extensive experience in retail, nonprofit leadership, and communications. She has a deep understanding of and commitment to the circular economy and the reduction and reuse of material goods. In addition, her experience includes working for The Community Library for six years, most recently as its Communications Associate. Gold Mine Consign was created in 2013 to extend options to the community beyond its sister store, the Gold Mine Thrift. Its purpose was to offer an upscale shopping experience while allowing for consignment. Gold Mine Consign continues the original mission of the founders of the Gold Mine Thrift. In 1955, 17 women had the vision to create a thrift store to help support the Valley’s first and only private library. Nearly 70 years later, their vision has now become arguably the most iconic thrift store in the West. In June 2023, Gold Mine Consign will be completely renovated and moved to its new home where it will be next to Gold Mine Thrift and the new Wood River Museum of History and Culture in the new Fourth and Walnut building.
“It’s going to be amazing,” says Goodyear. “The new space will be beautiful, with an elevated aesthetic, high ceilings, and lots of light. I’m delighted that the Consign store will be right next door to Gold Mine Thrift and the new location of the Museum.” The Consign store is currently accepting summer consignment items in designer womenswear, shoes, and accessories. Those wishing to consign items can drop in during business hours with ten items or less, clean, with no stains or holes. No appointment is necessary. Meredith Stoecklein shares her LEIN bridal fashion vision
For Meredith Stoecklein, taking time out in Sun Valley, Idaho, a place she has known her entire life, was the best thing she could ever do. Meredith’s creativity and accomplishments as a contemporary clothing designer in bridal and ready-to-wear fashion are deep-rooted, drawing upon the inspiration and beauty, that she finds in the unique environs of south-central Idaho. Ever since she was born, Meredith has spent all her summers at her family ranch in Mackay, Idaho. “It is a very special place for me,” she says. “I grew up riding horses and fly fishing on the ranch. My Aunt Mary and Uncle David Stoecklein, a beloved Sun Valley and Western photographer, lived full-time in Sun Valley and every year I looked forward to spending the summers with my three wild cousins.” 42

“I loved the idea of making a garment that had a purpose and existed beyond a special occasion.” —Meredith Stoecklein
While studying, interning, and later working, Meredith was designing and making wedding dresses on the side. “I was making wedding dresses for friends out of my fifth floor walk-up in the West Village, for ‘the cool downtown girls,’ who worked in fashion and the art world and could not find a wedding dress they wanted.” Becoming a known wedding dressmaker among her circle, Meredith was making two-piece sets and party dresses for friends and their friends. When her job ended in menswear, she saw an opportunity to create an inventive line of wedding dresses.
Working in fashion PR in Los Angeles, Meredith’s world was about red carpet and celebrity dressing for Chanel. Yet, she was curious about clothing construction and liked to hang out in the tailoring rooms with the Chanel seamstresses, who only worked for Chanel, and observe them creating works of beauty behind the scenes. “I was mesmerized by the craftsmanship of Chanel’s haute couture and would hover over the in-house seamstresses studying their work,” she recalls. “I knew I was on the wrong side of fashion, so I decided to take a local sewing class and it all clicked.” Immediately, Meredith left Los Angeles for New York City. She studied at the Parsons School of Design and received an associate degree from its two-year program. “During my time at Parsons I interned at several houses. Interning at 26 was a humbling experience, my bosses were my age or younger,” says Meredith. “After Parsons, I went into menswear and worked there for several years.” 44

“I loved the idea of making a garment that had a purpose and existed beyond a special occasion,” she says. “‘Moment Dressing’ is what I called it. There was something meaningful behind it, and at the time, it was a different approach for bridal. I had been in ready-to-wear for so long, and with the fast turnover of collections, it felt purposeful to design a wedding dress.” Much like perfume, Meredith’s wedding dresses are meant to trigger or create a memory. She has always loved fashion, so her ready-to-wear approach to bridal inspired her to launch her bridal line, LEIN, focusing on contemporary aisle-style dresses, along with her signature civil ceremony and elopement silhouettes. The approach channels very 21st-century living and lifestyle. “I went into the bridal business blindly; I came from a menswear and ready-to-wear background,” she says. “It’s taken some time to navigate the industry, specifically with my aesthetic and most importantly from a business standpoint.”

When the pandemic halted everyone’s business, Meredith decided to take a hiatus from New York City and come to Idaho. She alerted her retailers that she was taking a break and put a ‘pause’ on LEIN. Finding her heart’s place, she allowed Sun Valley to guide her and bring her back to her center and relaunch the brand in April 2023. “This is the first collection I’ve shown since 2020,” she says. “For the first time, this felt like a finished collection. I had the time and space to create and really think about where I wanted to take LEIN.” The brand was back, and so was the support. The industry is family, and I felt welcomed with open arms.” Each dress has a personality. “I try to showcase that through the collections, hoping they resonate with a bride and feel like a piece they would pull out of their closet,” Meredith

says. “A dress should not be a worriment at a wedding. I want the bride to be in the moment and, honestly, not even be thinking about the dress on the wedding day. The goal is for the bride to be wearing the dress, not the dress wearing the bride. I’m non-traditional about designing wedding dresses, but very traditional about the meaning of a wedding, marriage, and commitment. I think it’s a beautiful thing.” Weddings and brides are evolving. They are more contemporary than the brides of decades ago. People are marrying later, partly because they are focusing on their careers and prioritizing themselves and their goals. We see more couples paying for their own weddings and doing it their way, breaking with certain traditions but not the meaning.

“My new collection has subtle pops of color with blush and nudes for an unexpected moment,” says Meredith. “It’s purposefully surprising because as the rules and trends are changing, so are the designs. It’s non-traditional, which is very much how my life has always been.” Fit, structure, and quality of the designs are most important to Meredith, which she will not sacrifice. “I’m very detail-oriented when it comes to designing, specifically in the craftsmanship of each piece, the quality can be seen inside and out. That’s probably where my menswear background comes in” she says. “You can see the intricacies in the fabric and the trims like the specialty lace we developed with our mill in Italy, a patented polyurethane thread with a blush silk organza backing, I love reinventing a traditional fabric in a contemporary way.” Meredith’s new collection honors the two worlds she loves so much, her life in New York City and her life in Idaho. She collaborated with local Sun Valley jeweler, Jenn Tormey, creating Westerninspired pieces, including a bolo tie using ice cream opals, sourced from the Idaho mountains. “It was important for me to showcase not only my love for Idaho but the incredible talents that live here and who make Sun Valley so unique.” “Living in the city for so long, I think I forgot how much I needed nature and the mountains,” she says. “I’m really captivated by my surroundings here— from lazy walks in our fields of wild grasses with my horses following close behind to the sounds of Aspen leaves dancing in the wind. When I am in New York City, it’s work, but when I am in Idaho, my days feel nostalgic and inspiring. I’m lucky to call this place home.” leinstudio.com 48

DRESSES WITH DESTINY The Manor House Bridal
by Lori Williams Photos by Halsey Pierce
When Allison Jadallah had the opportunity to buy The Manor House Bridal store, she landed in the “space” she had been carrying around in her heart since she was a young girl. Instead of collecting magazine pages, she shares her heart for couture wedding gowns in her boutique. So when she learned in 2022 that The Manor House would close, she knew it was a retail culture and clientele she could cater to well and one she had been drawn to most of her life. For a girl who used to harass high-end New York City wedding planners to hire her, now at 30, it was just the challenge and the full-circle destiny she’d been dreaming of. “I had felt drawn to the wedding ‘space’ and this store for a long time,” says Allison. “I used to go into the Manor House and offer steam gowns for the previous owners because I wanted to be around the dresses. I am so honored for the opportunity to take it over.” Allison’s family moved to the Valley when she was four. When she was 15, they moved to New York City, where she stayed for college. In 2020, she moved back to Sun Valley, where she met her now husband, planned her own Sun Valley wedding, and co-founded a successful creative agency, an experience that instilled in her the confidence to be a first-time business owner. Allison brings her intuitiveness and innate creativity to Manor House Bridal to define the ethos of a destination-experience bridal boutique. At New York’s Bridal Fashion Week in April, her unabashed boldness, preparation, and persistence enabled her to secure contracts with several exclusive designers. Such designers say no to stores every day, all day long. She identified the designers she believed suited the Sun Valley market well, secured the appointments—a feat in itself—and presented to each team extensive research indicating why Sun Valley would be a booming market for them. svpn-mag.com

“I’m excited to be the only Monique Lhuillier wedding gown store between Bozeman and Denver, Seattle, and Los Angeles,” she says. In addition, Allison secured Savannah Miller and Ines Di Santo’s collection, which only partners with independent boutiques, making Manor House Bridal their only Idaho retailer. “I also met with the Anne Barge team, Viktor & Rolf Bridal, and Mark Ingram, as an opportunity to learn more about industry design techniques and trends and to build a greater connection with designers who have much credibility,” says Allison. Allison strove to acquire collections with different aesthetics. “I don’t want the gowns to compete. I want them to live on their design and style,” she explains. Manor House Bridal will also maintain the Justin Alexander collection, which has been the cornerstone of the store since it first opened. The boutique is laid out and structured so that a bride looks first for the dress and then the designer, though inherently, they will be close together. Dresses are artfully hung so that their length and volume have room to breathe and present better to the eye. When brides are in town planning details for their Sun Valley wedding, Allison wants the boutique to provide the dual benefit of offering an exclusive gown as part of the experience of their dream destination. “Ideally, I would love to collaborate with Sun Valley Resort and Limelight Hotel as an added service to getting married at a five-star resort,” says Allison. While couture gowns are exclusive, Allison doesn’t want the local community to feel as though they are priced out. “I want to make sure I can still maintain and honor Blaine County residents and hope to implement some sort of a professional discount,” she says. “I want the store to be

accessible to our locals and tourists. And whether a client is spending 10K or 2K on a gown, I want to provide each bride with a particular level of service. Keeping the store appointment only is a full white-glove experience, where one bride has 100% of my focus, with no restrictions on time or several dresses to try on.” Manor House Bridal will also offer party looks and mini dresses, bridal accessories, including custom veils and vow cards, day-of services, prepping and steaming dresses, arranging veils and training for photos, and at the altar. “I want to create an end-to-end experience for brides, so they feel like they invested themselves,” says Allison. For Allison, interacting with brides feels like magic, energizing her with joy she hasn’t experienced in any other career. “I honestly can’t think of anything more fulfilling than the space I am in right now.” Manor House Bridal 520 4th Street East, Unit 101 | Ketchum 208.309.3962 (by appointment) themanorhousesv@gmail.com themanorhousesv.com 56

Nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains of south-central Idaho, Sun Valley Resort persists as a historic and iconic destination for a storybook wedding. With eight breathtaking venues for gatherings of all sizes, this four-season setting pairs the landscape’s natural beauty with sophistication and elegance. Sun Valley’s team of experts work with clients and their wedding planners on all the services from venue layout, setup, ceremony audio and visual, to menu selection, beverage offerings, and even transportation. “We love working with our couples on custom menus and unique individual details to make svpn-mag.com

their wedding a special reflection of their personalities and tastes,” says Kat Stansberry, lead of the Sun Valley Wedding Team. The resort’s sterling reputation, long list of amenities, guest activities, and stunning properties make it an easy choice of backdrop for tying the knot. Picking a date and venue may feel daunting, but Sun Valley makes it easy. With a wide range of indoor and outdoor options, many of the resort’s wedding locations are available year-round. Kat explains that “most weddings book 12 to 24 months in advance. If a peak summer Saturday is a priority, we recommend booking at least 18 months prior to your ideal date. We typically only have one cancellation per year. Summer, from early June through the end of September, is our peak season. Venue fees and food minimums are the highest during this timeframe; however, we do offer a 20% venue discount for a Friday or Sunday (excluding holiday weekends) throughout the entire year. November, April, and May are the least expensive months to get married at the Resort, but we are limited with our venues due to the transitional weather during that time.” The Trail Creek Pavilion is the most popular and private locale, tucked away in a quiet mountain valley that dramatically frames the face of Bald Mountain. Available from early June through October, the pavilion can seat up to 250 guests. Just a stone’s throw away, on the same property, is the beloved Trail Creek Cabin. Built in 1936, this classic venue is teeming with rustic charm and perfect for a cozy wedding any time of year. Depending on the season, the cabin is accessible by car, sleigh, or wagon. You 60

can take the gondola to the altar for a memorable ceremony or intimate rehearsal dinner at The Roundhouse Restaurant. This Sun Valley staple, built in 1939, sits halfway up Bald Mountain at 7,700 feet elevation. The new ceremony site, built in 2020, looks out over the Pioneer Mountains with a panoramic view that will leave you speechless. And, if heights aren’t your thing, you can wed slopeside, at the base of the mountain instead. River Run Lodge converts into an opulent dining room with floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and magnificent chandeliers. In the summer, you can exchange vows on the lawn and enjoy cocktails on the patio adjacent to the Big Wood River. I asked Kat, in her opinion, “What makes Sun Valley such a special place to get married?” She answered, “Our couples can get married anywhere, but they choose to get married at Sun Valley because it means something special in their lives. Our brides and grooms have grown up coming to the Resort since they were small children, and they have dreamed of getting married here for as long as they can remember. It is very rare for us to interact with a bride or groom who simply found us online. The history and tradition extend beyond the Sun Valley story that we celebrate at the Resort and into their personal memories and family traditions that make it their own. Our Sun Valley venues offer a history and authenticity that cannot be found anywhere else.” Sun Valley is more than a destination. It’s the tie that binds.

CO-CHAIRS OF THE 42ND ANNUAL SUN VALLEY WINE AUCTION
Andrea, Christopher, and Jennifer Laporte This year’s 42nd Annual Sun Valley Wine Auction co-chairs are Andrea, Christopher, and Jennifer Laporte. Andrea Laporte first came to the Wood River Valley with her family about 30 years ago. Since then, she has made it the home base for her extended family, thanks to the many things the valley has to offer, from pristine wilderness to extensive cultural offerings. Andrea is a vital member of the Sun Valley community and has been a member of the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) Board of Directors for nearly five years. This year, she celebrates her one-year anniversary as Board President. Andie graduated from the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania and continues to keep up with the profession by sitting on its Board of Advisors. Her love of art blossomed while serving as a board member of the Walters Museum in Baltimore as well as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.
Andrea Laporte is the Sun Valley Museum of Art Board President and 2023 Sun Valley Wine Auction Co-Chair
“I was always curious about why I was drawn to healthcare and the arts,” Laporte explains. “The arts feed us emotionally, spiritually, and physically; the arts—in all forms, from music to painting to performance—bring a dimension to our lives that is essential. SVMoA is a place for students of all ages to learn and engage with the arts. It is always open and free to the public. It is the locus that fuels a basic need in all of us, no matter our age and stage in life.”

Dan Kosta
Kosta has over 20 years of experience in the Sonoma County wine industry, specifically as the leading ultra-premium California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer. His lifelong love of food and wine led him to a career in the restaurant industry, utilizing skills learned as a child to navigate through a series of worldclass restaurants as a back waiter, waiter, bartender, maître d’, operations manager, and finally as wine director at the acclaimed John Ash & Company in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Kosta and his business partner Michael Browne founded Kosta Browne Winery in 1997. THE SHARPEST KNIFE IN THE KITCHEN John Tesar, Chef de Cuisine
by Sabina Dana Plasse
At the end of june, the Sun Valley Wine Auction will welcome back one of the valley’s most revered guests, Chef John Tesar, who will be the 2023 Chef de Cuisine at this year’s Sun Valley Wine Auction. Tesar’s influential culinary career spans over four decades, with a gastronomic footprint in the Southwest and on both coasts. He has earned high praise for his critically acclaimed Knife Steakhouses in Dallas and Plano, Texas, along with his Knife Burger. Tesar has added two more dining experiences to his culinary experiences: Outer Reef at Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, where he offers coastal seafood using fresh California produce and seafood sourced exclusively from the West Coast, from Baja to Alaska. However, Knife & Spoon at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes in Orlando is Tesar’s most coveted creation yet receiving a MICHELIN star as a contemporary steakhouse fare with fresh seafood. As a classically trained chef with an innovative approach to seafood and steakhouse cuisine, Tesar’s reputation for reinventing the steakhouse dining experience is wellknown and highly regarded. “For years, I thrived as the European-trained seafood chef,” he says. “For Knife, I traveled to steakhouses around the country to learn how to change and elevate the game.” 128

By sourcing products through partnerships with Heartbrand Beef and 44 Farms, a dry-aging process that Tesar perfected, and traditional kitchen techniques that never fail, Tesar’s success is well-warranted. “It’s all about carrying on those traditions while keeping your mind open for growth and new experiences,” he says. “To identify, execute, and multiply a niche like this is truly a treasure. I have always been a contrarian. No matter what trend, I looked for opportunities. I believe you give the guests what they want.” Valuing purity, hard work, style, and integrity, Tesar relishes the enthusiastic support his concept garners from staff, guests, and critics. “I care,” he says. “Anything that I become involved with, I truly care about. My word and integrity are significant to me.” Before reinventing the Texas steakhouse landscape, Tesar enjoyed a lengthy career in fine dining that stemmed from his upbringing in Manhattan and the Hamptons. With classical French training from Paris’s La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine, Tesar worked at Westhampton’s Club Pierre, an excellent French eatery, for six years before ultimately purchasing it. In addition, he furthered his craft throughout the ‘90s at iconic New York City restaurants including 13 Barrow Street, 44 & Hell’s Kitchen, Vine, and Supper Club—at which he worked alongside celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain—before leaving New York City behind in the early 2000s to join chef Rick Moonen in Las Vegas at RM Seafood. With its blossoming food scene, Dallas drew Tesar to Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in 2006 to lead the highend establishment as executive chef, rapidly garnering two fivestar reviews. He later went on to open Spoon Bar & Kitchen to bring premium seasonal seafood to central Texas in 2012, meanwhile consulting on numerous DRG Concepts properties, including Dallas Chop House and Dallas Fish Market, as well as on The Cedars Social, The Commissary, and more. Spoon Bar & Kitchen gained immediate recognition as one of the best new restaurants in the world from Condé Nast Traveler, Bon Appétit, and Esquire, and Tesar’s visionary consulting work helped shape the Dallas food scene. With eight successful years of growing the Knife brand, Tesar was ready to take on both coasts, bringing Knife & Spoon to 130

Outer Reef pays homage to Tesar’s critically acclaimed seafood restaurant Spoon Bar & Kitchen with a selection of favorites from its menu, including crudo, caviar, and fresh shellfish, as well as select meat offerings from his steakhouse concept Knife. Tesar continues to grow the reach of his consultancy in addition to his expansion of the Knife brand, the development of a television show, and the 2017 launch of his cookbook, Knife: Steakhouse Meals at Home, which features endorsements by talented chefs. A five-time James Beard “Best Southwest Chef” semifinalist, a twotime contestant on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” and winner of Food Network’s “Extreme Chef,” Tesar’s national media presence also includes appearances on “The Today Show” and “The Early Show” as well as coverage in The New York Times, Food & Wine, and New York Magazine. Having cooked for so many people, titans of business, celebrities, and their moms, as well as many others, Tesar never loses sight of his gift and purpose—success, grace, and appreciation, and being philanthropic is important to him. “Sun Valley is an extraordinary place for me,” says Tesar. “I have enjoyed so many experiences, and the people are incredible. We are melding the old and the new for this year’s Pig Roast, where I invited chefs who are known and working to raise money for the Sun Valley Museum of Art. We are all involved in making the world a better place to raise and give money to people who need it. There’s nothing more important than education.”

If there was ever a time to take notice of the change, it is now, and the Sun Valley Forum can show you the way, no matter how little or big your interests or curiosities are. For 2023, many global leaders and innovators will gather for the eighth Sun Valley Forum June 20-23, which will take place at The Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum. The thought-leaders and doers participating in this year’s Forum are the policymakers, entrepreneurs, investors, and philanthropists who are scaling solutions for a healthy, secure, and thriving world. These distinct and active individuals are coming to Sun Valley to connect, share, inspire, and listen, making for an eye-opening experience and offering new perspectives along with technology.
Founded in 2015, the Forum is presented by Ketchumbased sustainability advisory firm Christensen Global, with partners including the Forum’s founding host, Sun Valley Institute for Resilience, which advances climate solutions in the Sun Valley region. Aimée Christensen of Christensen Global, the Forum’s founder and curator, has advanced climate leadership for three decades, including at the US Department of Energy and Google, with the Forum bringing her network to Sun Valley to showcase solutions and accelerate action.” “Gathering businesses, policymakers, philanthropists, investors, storytellers, and entrepreneurs, the Forum focuses on key leverage points to address climate change, including finance, food and agriculture, energy, and svpn-mag.com

public engagement—what each of us can do in our lives,” says Christensen.
Frishberg of Amalgamated Bank and Dave Chen of Equilibrium Capital will be in attendance.
This year’s theme, “The Multiplier Effect: Partnering to Accelerate Climate Solutions,” brings many speakers with outlooks for everyone’s interests including media, philanthropy, finance, communicators, and storytellers. Those speaking include Lisa Friedman, Climate Reporter for The New York Times, Leslie Kaufman of Bloomberg Business and Bloomberg Green and Jeff Goodell of Rolling Stone.
A regular and inspiring Forum panelist and attendee and since its inception, Peter Horton, director, writer, and producer of New Amsterdam, Grey’s Anatomy, and thirtysomething, will be in attendance this year, as well as Jill Tidman, Executive Director of The Redford Center. Also, Brady Walkinshaw, CEO of Earth Alliance, founded by Leonardo DiCaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs, will be speaking.
Others include Cecilia Martinez of the Bezos Earth Fund, Kathleen Simpson of The Russell Family Foundation, and Dana Lanza of Confluence Philanthropy. In addition, Ivan 134

significant event, which includes even more solutionminded people for the greater good. Although the Forum features an incredible array of people at the tops of their fields, some attending offer their life’s vehicle to inform an even larger audience, primarily through storytelling, including Peter Horton. Since the inaugural Forum in 2015, Horton has participated almost every year, including in 2019 and 2022. When the event pivoted to being virtual in 2020, Horton was instrumental in connecting personal and environmental well-being with an emergency room head nurse he befriended through the show New Amsterdam, in which he was a director, producer, and actor. He created an impactful session for the Forum attendees and guests who could engage firsthand to hear about her experiences and have an essential conversation about COVID and personal well-being. Unfortunately, this situation continues to linger and affect people worldwide, especially concerning mental health. “I have a sense of urgency to activate and do something,” says Horton. “We’re seeing what climate change looks like first-hand. It’s no longer an existential threat. It is genuine.” While searching to find his place with a desire to make change happen, Horton met Aimée Christensen, whom he describes as proactive and practical in this space he wants to be, and pitched her on being part of the Forum. “The idea of bringing fascinating speakers and thinkers from different disciplines in the environmental movement to try and gather to come up with ways to do something tangible and meaningful was compelling for me,” he says. “As it turns out, my daughter Ruby became involved and helped launch a national youth forum with kids around the country in 2019 and then presented it at the Sun Valley Forum, which injected great meaning for future generations affected by what is happening.”
discussions as well as the “Multiplier Effect,” which are two working sessions to help to accelerate specific initiatives by leveraging the deep knowledge, powerful reach, and resources within the Forum community, on-site and throughout the year. The first session, “Gaming for Impact,” will include the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center, which will bring together gaming executives, game developers, storytellers, and philanthropists to advance gaming as a tool to reach billions of gamers with climate solutions. For the second session, “Catalytic Climate Finance,” the Russell Family Foundation will gather investors and philanthropists to showcase strategies to align lending and investment decisions with a downward glide path toward long-term decarbonization targets and to share innovative financial approaches and tools that de-risk and fund the deployment of climate and resilience solutions. The Sun Valley Forum is more than just a conference, it is shaped to drive action, inside the meeting rooms and while enjoying the incredible outdoor recreation in the region with group activities including its signature Adventure Day. Full program details and registration information can be found at sunvalleyforum.com.
Sun Valley Forum founder Aimée Christensen
Horton adds, “And when COVID happened, we were able to humanize what was happening with discussion. The Forum allows for a feeling of action. I am tethered to the Forum because it confronts all these overwhelming problems. The human mind tends to prioritize experience over analysis. We have decades of analysis on climate change, and now we are experiencing it. As a result, there’s a demand for change at every level, awakening to the need.” With its focus on collaboration, the eighth Sun Valley Forum program includes keynote addresses and panel svpn-mag.com

AN INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPANY CONNECTS US ALL Dutch National Ballet Performs for Ballet Sun Valley Festival by Sabina Dana Plasse
For many who visit, frequent, or live in Sun Valley, summer has become the year’s most anticipated season. Adding to the joy of being in the environs of the Wood River Valley are the many incredible arts and culture events, most often only created for a Sun Valley audience. Gracing the Sun Valley Pavilion stage this July, Dutch National Ballet (DNB) will perform for the first time in Sun Valley, presented by Ballet Sun Valley (BSV) for its 2023 festival. This is also the first time BSV has had the opportunity to present an international ballet company. It has been 40 years since Dutch National Ballet last toured in the United States, and Sun Valley will be its first stop. DNB’s debut at Ballet Sun Valley is part of a U.S. tour that includes subsequent performances at Jacob’s Pillow and The Music Center in Los Angeles. “Our dancers are very excited to have the opportunity to dance in Sun Valley as well as our other tour stops— Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts and The Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles,” says Dutch National Ballet Director Ted Brandsen. Since 2003, Ted Brandsen has served as Director of the Dutch National Ballet. Brandsen’s leadership has ushered in a new heyday for the company, which now ranks among the top leading ballet companies in the world.

Brandsen’s initiatives include rejuvenating the full-length repertoire, introducing new world-class choreographers, and increasing the company’s appearances at major international venues. Dutch National Ballet is one of the largest ballet companies in Europe and a regular guest at major theaters worldwide. More than 30 Dutch National Ballet dancers from 18 countries, which include Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Spain, and the United States, will perform at the 2023 Ballet Sun Valley Festival.
each evening, with works by Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, internationally recognized as one of the grand masters of contemporary ballet. The first program brings iconic ballets from the extensive work of master choreographer and resident artist Van Manen, who, at 91 years old, remains one of the world’s most venerated and widely performed choreographers today. Van Manen has been choreographing for decades and is a leading figure in the international dance scene and has choreographed more than 150 ballets throughout his career.
The appearance of Dutch National Ballet continues to fulfill the dream of BSV’s founder, Robert Smelick, to bring the best of world-class ballet to Sun Valley. “As Ballet Sun Valley’s board chair, I look to honor Bob’s legacy and continue his vision of bringing the best of ballet to the Sun Valley area,” says Chairman, Dick Davis. “For BSV’s upcoming season, Dutch National Ballet Director Ted Brandsen has selected a beautiful and unique program for our local community. We look forward to sharing with our audience the experience of seeing this renowned European company on the beautiful Pavilion stage.”
The second program highlights the classical ballet canon and challenging works from internationally famous choreographers mixed with an intimate and moving piece by a young female choreographer Wubkje Kuindersma, who’s making waves in Europe and Australia. In addition, it includes choreography by William Forsythe, an American choreographer long recognized for integrating ballet and visual arts in his work.

Several works will be presented with a live orchestra arranged by San Francisco Ballet Conductor and Music Director, Martin West. He is also the Ballet Sun Valley Founding Music Director. “I look forward to Ballet Sun Valley every year as a highlight of my summer,” says West. “The standard of dancing is as good as you see anywhere, and I’m incredibly excited that we are hosting our first international company this year. STANLEY
When the Sawtooth Valley Gathering descends on Stanley in summer, surrounded by three magnificent mountain ranges set on a plateau at the foot of the Sawtooths, the ensuing symbolic vortex creates a sweet spot on the earth where the energy will leave you feeling a little Sawtooth Mountain high for the rest of the season. This beloved event, one of the best-kept music festival secrets, boasts four days and nights of live music reverberating off jagged peaks and blazing sunsets. Sawtooth Valley Pioneer Park becomes a glowing encampment of vendor lights and center stage as dusk descends on late-night shows. Swirl together the intoxicating mix of a star-filled Idaho night and the scent of the alpine forest, and it doesn’t get any more potent than that. The Sawtooth Valley Gathering showcases a lineup of over 30-plus live performances from some of the most accomplished songwriters and musicians performing around the West and Pacific Northwest. In addition to Pioneer Park’s outdoor stages, late-night shows throw down at the legendary Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall and the Kasino Club. With DJs and other performers, Sawtooth is an authentic Idaho musical experience like no other. It’s walkable, affordable, and friendly. Live music will occur Thursday, June 22 and Sunday, June 25 at Mountain Village Resort and at Stanley Pioneer Park on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24. In addition, local and regional vendors are on-site and in Stanley, providing beverages, food, arts and crafts, workshops, and more to create this celebrated summer experience. svpn-mag.com

“The 2023 Sawtooth Valley Gathering will be one of our best festivals to date with off-the-chart performers from roots and folk rock to jazz and punk influences that are truly amazing,” says founder James Fowler. “The sensational Margo Price is our featured Friday headliner this year. We are excited to have this generational talent in the Sawtooths.” Price has cemented herself as a force in American music with just three remarkable solo albums. Additional headliners include very special friends of the festival, Fruition, returning for their fifth year, and The Band of Heathens, with the #1 album in the country (and the #3 single) on the Americana Music Association’s album chart. Adding to the excitement is the return of TK & The Holy Know-Nothings and Mama Magnolia, who brought a 2021 critically acclaimed performance to the event. 144

Free Peoples
This year’s “artists-at-large” include the amazing Allie Kral and Jimmy James, one of Seattle’s most exciting guitarists. The two performers will collaborate on stage with several of this year’s musicians. Others returning include Free Peoples, Daniel Rodriguez, John Craigie and Friends, Michaela French, and the Dead Winter Carpenters, who performed as headliners at the inaugural gathering (2015). In addition, the Jon Stickley Trio returns. They threw down one of the most technically incendiary sets of original music to ever hit Stanley, Idaho, that left the crowd begging for more. MarchFourth, a festival favorite, returns to ramp up the energy with its diverse musical repertoire, including a fourpiece percussion corps, a seven-part brass section, dancers, acrobatics, and stilt walkers. 146

The Black Tones
Bands debuting this year include the Seattle-based blues band, The Black Tones, the hip-hop folk-rooted Handmade Moments from New Orleans, and Ketchum’s very own Pisten Bulleys. Water Tower debuts fusing bluegrass and old-time revivalism, and California’s Diggin’ Dirt brings a West Coast funk sound. Sawtooth Valley Gathering adds an excellent diva list of women performing for 2023— songstress Stephanie Anne Johnson, Arietta Ward, a siren of neo-soul/blues, funk, R&B, and Fruition’s Mimi Naja. And there’s more, as SVG welcomes the Nicki Bluhm + Ross James Duo, an artist combination that will be an event for all music lovers.
STANLEY
Closing out the Sawtooth Valley Gathering on Sunday, June 25, The Brothers Comatose return, bringing the highenergy, foot-stompin’ excitement of contemporary rock and traditional bluegrass to the main stage. “The Brothers Comatose are some of the best bluegrass musicians and performers touring today,” says Fowler. “There’s a lot of incredible music and unforgettable performances coming to Stanley.” Fowler adds, “This event would not happen without the dozens of incredible volunteers from around the Northwest and beyond. Additionally, the City of Stanley, the locals, and business owners are very welcoming. We would certainly not exist today at the size and scope we’ve grown into without our ultimate hosts, Mandy and Russell Clark, and the homebase location of Mountain Village Resort.” For every festival pass purchased, $1 is donated to Sawtooth Valley nonprofits. Camping is available at Sawtooth Valley Pioneer Park and Mountain Village Resort’s properties. In addition, festivalgoers must have a festival pass to camp at any Sawtooth Valley Gathering-designated campsites. Camping and latenight tickets are sold separately from festival passes. CENTER PROVIDES
RECOVERY RELIEF
Dr. Molly Brown on miracles and peak performance Way beyond a state of fatigue and exhaustion and way behind a state of “comfort zone” lies a state of peak performance, with fluid and optimal functioning in, brain, body, and consciousness. And therein that state lie the miracles and magic of life and the keys to feeling amazing, radiant, positive, and joyful health each and every day. Especially in chronic and complicated cases, unraveling the state of health and the psychological, emotional, and physiological stresses that lead to the condition takes integrity, clarity, intuition, and a comprehensive neurological, neuromuscular, metabolic, organ, and glandular evaluation. This is what our clinic offers—a new system of healthcare and one that brings results. The body is resilient. The body will heal with the proper tools in place to allow it to recover fully. One of our favorite “miracles” and recent successes is in an anonymous format below. “M” is a 31-year-old female who came to us with a lifelong struggle with poor health, being born prematurely, having OCD as a child, and a slow-developing brain tumor that was removed as a teenager. As an adult, she had type one narcolepsy, stomach issues, shoulder and neck pain, chronic migraine and cluster headaches, and dozens of named and unnamed conditions that were merely 154

symptoms of a non-functioning system. On an average of 15 medications daily, she was to the point where her whole life was spent managing her health. She spent most of every day in bed, lying down, struggling with alternating dizziness, nausea, and crippling fatigue. Having tried “everything” to manage her health, including specialists, changing medications, neurologists, and more, she was disabled, with no hope, severe chronic illness, frequent acute episodes, exhaustion, and unable to cope with everyday life. POTS syndrome and the narcolepsy medications kept her nauseous, fatigued, dizzy, unable to work, play her instrument, and more. She looked me square in the eyes at her first appointment and said, “I know I can never get better, but I’m hoping at least I don’t have to spend every day managing illness.” I responded, “Well, let’s see about that.” After that, I learned to trust the neurologically-based processes and felt that “M” was a perfect candidate for our clinic. Fast-forward a mere ten months. After a combination of neurofeedback, QNRT to balance the brain, digestion, and metabolic conditions, AMIT for muscular pain and nervous system work, and specific nutritional protocols, “M” comes into our clinic saying she feels amazing. She is back to studying for her professional exams and licensing, is playing her violin and rehearsing several times per week (unheard of before with her fatigue and pain), and is full of energy. She

never thought she would get to this high energy level, handle stress, and feel pain-free, strong, positive, and happy. She is excited about her life. Over a dozen doctors and specialists told “M” that she would never be able to change her health. Instead, we see this as a fantastic success in a chronic and complicated condition and in the body’s ability to heal and be resilient. Our work is to facilitate a positive, peak state of physical health. In this state, one feels joy, happiness, a passion for life, and vibrant and energetic. Time and time again, we can take those who are told their conditions are helpless, their pain will never go away, their crippling health issues can only at best be “managed,” and restore vitality to even the most discouraged of souls. We see miracles daily, especially in the most chronic and complicated autoimmune, pain, and systemic conditions. 156

STROKE: BE FAST Learn how to identify the systems by St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center

svpn-mag.com
Dr. Brock Bemis is an emergency physician and medical director of the St. Luke’s Wood River Emergency Department. He wants you to know that a stroke is a Time-Sensitive Emergency, which means that successful treatment of a stroke depends upon immediate recognition, calling EMS 911 for help, and rapid transport to the Emergency Department.
WELLNESS | ST. LUKE’S
A STROKE STARTS WITH THE ONSET OF SYMPTOMS. THE ACRONYM B.E.F.A.S.T. CAN HELP IN THE IDENTIFICATION:
B
E
F
A
S
T
B: Balance Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
E: Eyes Is the person experiencing double vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes?
F: Face drooping Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is it uneven or lopsided?
A: Arm weakness Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S: Speech difficulty Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Are they able to correctly repeat the words?
T: Time to call 911 If the person exhibits any of these symptoms, even if they go away, call 911 and tell the operator it may be a stroke. Note the time the symptoms first appeared. Emergency responders will want to know.
NO TIME TO WASTE
Call EMS (911)—they are part of the team! They gather essential info and notify the ED—this saves precious time by allowing the team to prepare, including clearing the CT table and getting a neurologist on the in-room camera. Driving or having someone drive you to the Emergency Department is NOT recommended. Other symptoms include: Severe, sudden headache Numbness on one side of the body Confused appearance or inability to understand others The sooner the ER team evaluates, the sooner potential treatment can be provided. Sixty-six percent of the time,
someone other than the patient decides to seek treatment. If you aren’t sure, go ahead and make the call anyway. Just one of these symptoms may indicate a stroke. Do not wait! Emergent care provided by the ED includes a specialized neurologic exam, lab studies, and a state-of-the-art CT scan that evaluates the arteries of the head and neck and perfusion to the brain to quickly identify (within minutes of scan completion) blockages and areas of brain tissue at risk. Simultaneous to this timely workup, the team coordinates with stroke-trained neurologists based in Denver, Colorado, as needed via TeleHealth AV technology in the patient’s room. If treatment criteria are met, clot-dissolving medication can open blocked vessels. The benefits of this medication are directly correlated with time—the sooner the medication is svpn-mag.com

given, the greater the odds of meaningful recovery. Studies show an increased likelihood of partial or complete reversal of stroke symptoms and decreased mortality. If the CT scan identifies a large clot blocking one of the larger arteries in the brain, in addition to receiving clot-busting medication if eligible, a procedure called a thrombectomy can be performed. This procedure is performed by a neurointerventionalist who places a catheter into a large artery of the leg or arm, guiding it to the blocked artery in the brain and removing the clot. It is said that “time is brain,” with roughly two million cells per minute lost until circulation is re-established. Every minute roughly translates to aging the brain by 3.1 weeks, every hour
STROKE FACTS Stroke is the fifth
leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of serious disability in adults. Every 40 seconds,
a stroke occurs, 795,000 per year (610k new and 185k recurrent), and every 3-4 minutes, a stroke death occurs. TIA or transient
ischemic attack (mini-stroke) occurs approximately 200,000 per year, with the same symptoms as a stroke but typically lasting only minutes. Don’t ignore it. Come to the hospital for an evaluation.

by 3.6 years, and 10 hours by 36 years. Translated into lost functionality, this is 1.5 days of healthy living lost every minute until blood flow to the brain is re-established. The neuro-interventionalists are on-call 24/7. In this situation, the patient will be transported to Boise by helicopter (weather permitting). Using a specialized neurologic assessment designed to detect large vessel occlusion stroke, the ED physician can launch a helicopter immediately upon the patient’s arrival to the ED, significantly reducing the time it takes to get a patient to Boise for a thrombectomy. RISK FACTORS
The American Stroke Association identifies that 80% of strokes are preventable through risk factor identification and treatment. Who is at risk? Individuals with one or more of the following: High blood pressure—this is the #1 cause! High cholesterol Diabetes (types I and II) Atrial fibrillation (A. Fib) Heart disease Obesity Low physical activity or immobility Previous stroke, TIA, or heart attack Smoking habit Sleep apnea Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup on artery walls) Age > 60 Preventive care to reduce risk factors and offset chronic disease should be woven into all aspects of life, including where we live, work, learn, play, and grow. An annual wellness exam is beneficial to answer patient questions about health and lifestyle choices while presenting an opportunity to steer patients in a healthy direction. When scheduling an annual wellness exam, you are making an important decision to take responsibility for your health and quality of life. Don’t have a physician? Enjoy music as explosive as the fireworks by Marlowe Early
“We try to bring talent on the cusp and provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when it comes to bringing in new artists.” —Ryan Kolquist
This July 4th, celebrate at the Sun Valley Pavilion with Marcus King. RJK Entertainment is partnering with Sun Valley Resorts to put on a concert of epic proportions followed by a fireworks display for all to see from the Pavilion Lawn. Grammy Award-nominated artist Marcus King headlines the show with support from Idaho-based Tylor & the Train Robbers. This event benefits two local nonprofit organizations, Stella’s Shelter Fund and the Blaine County Charitable Fund. Perfect for families, friends, and people of all ages, gather to groove at this Fourth of July event not to be missed. Known for curating versatile acts from Ryan Bingham to Lainey Wilson, owner and operator of RJK Entertainment Ryan Kolquist aims to shake up the live entertainment scene by flooding Sun Valley with rousing shows. “We try to bring talent on the cusp and provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when it comes to bringing in new artists,” says Kolquist about his unique selections. Seeing Marcus King live does indeed feel like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because of the vigor he brings to each concert. The South Carolina native came up performing alongside his family before launching a successful touring career that landed him alongside Chris Stapleton, the Zach Brown Band, and Greta Van Fleet. After recieving a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album in 2020, King pivoted genre and in 2022 released the powerhouse rock n’ roll record Young Blood. As his genre-floating capabilities demonstrate, King is an artist with range, power, and stage presence that never fails to captivate crowds. “The great thing about King is that even though he’s young, he’s versatile and will hit all demographics,” Kolquist shares. With vocal quality often compared to Marvin Gaye, King promises a dynamic performance that will electrify the Pavilion this Fourth of July.

create opportunities for regional performers within his shows, but he believes that,“Tylor is one of those guys who is proving to be bigger than a regional act.” This concert recognizes Stella’s Shelter Fund and the Blaine County Charitable Fund (BCCF) as beneficiaries of a portion of the nights proceeds. Both organizations are integral parts of the Sun Valley nonprofit landscape. Stella’s Shelter Fund was founded in 2017 to support underfunded rescue shelters throughout Idaho and help animals of all kinds live safe and healthy lives. The nonprofit organization is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3), and all funds go directly to support animal shelters to spay, neuter, vaccinate, and provide emergency services to animal rescues. The Stella’s Shelter Fund team has been a beneficiary at RJK Entertainment events since 2018. “We all show up for each other and have a great working relationship,” says Stella’s co-founder Jennifer Terra. Jennifer will be at the event with Stella’s team handing out merch and raffling off prizes in support of the fund. The BCCF emerged at the onset of the pandemic as a recovery effort for residents losing their homes. It is now cemented as an organization fighting for housing stability in the Blaine County community. BCCF offers emergency rental and housing assistance, first/last/deposit assistance, gas/grocery cards, and other rapid relief funds to individuals who live and work in Blaine County, regardless of citizenship status. Mary Fauth, co-founder and Executive Director at the BCCF, is excited to be involved in the event as a step in getting the word out about the organization’s essential efforts. “Being a small and young organization, the ability to be seen as a part of this community and building that kind of recognition in the community is invaluable,” says Fauth. She sees the organization’s participation in this event as an opportunity to raise funds and a great chance to involve people who live in Blaine County as well as visitors and allow them to participate meaningfully. Support these incredible nonprofits while taking in the spectacle of the iconic Fourth of July fireworks display at the Sun Valley Pavilion with Marcus King. This event suits all ages, so bring the whole family for a night to remember. Doors open 5:30pm. Tickets are available at sunvalley.com or call the Sun Valley Recreation Office at 208.622.2135.

“This is truly a world-class performance of mariachi and folkloric dance. With the support of so many in the community, we’ll be able to present this amazing show in an unparalleled venue.” —Kristine Bretall
MÉXICO EN EL CORAZÓN A Celebration of Culture For All
by Martha Williams
In 2016, the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement (NAIMA) put together a mariachi event near its headquarters in Chicago. Working with Federaciones Jalisciense (community groups with members from Jalisco, Mexico), they soon connected with more performers and the event was replicated across three more states. Judy De La Mora-Macias has worked with NAIMA for more than 12 years and now helps orchestrate what has grown from that first event in 2016: México en el Corazón (Mexico in the Heart), a continent-touring performance sharing Mexican culture through folkloric dances and music. “Since I started working with NAIMA, my main focus was to help, to be in contact with my community, and to learn more and feel proud of my roots,” she says. In 2017, the tour grew to 22 events stretching from Anaheim to Pittsburgh, with live performances–all entirely free–at high schools and universities, arts centers, and Latino cultural centers. Over the next few years, the tour expanded into a truly North American circuit, with visits to Vancouver, British Columbia,

and Guadalajara’s Plaza de Armas. In 2020 and 2021, virtual events kept communities united from their homes across the continent. Now in its eighth year, México en el Corazón is traveling to 15 cities in 10 U.S. states this spring and fall, performing at sites such as Seattle’s Paramount Theatre, Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center, and Chicago’s Pritzker Pavilion. The tour will arrive in Sun Valley this June for the group’s first Idaho performance at the Sun Valley Pavilion. Their visit has been orchestrated by the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) and is supported by Sun Valley Resort, Argyros Performing Arts Center, Spur Community Foundation, Wood River Roofing, and a host of other local nonprofits and businesses. “SVMoA is honored and thrilled to be able to host México en el Corazón,” says Kristine Bretall, Performing Arts and Lectures Director. “This is truly a world-class performance of mariachi and folkloric dance. With the support of so many in the community, we’ll be able to present this amazing show in an unparalleled venue.” “That’s how everything comes together, and we’re able to do this for free,” De La Mora-Macias says of such local collaborations. “Every city where we go, there’s invaluable support.”
“We try to go to areas where our community is. We want to show them the beauty we have and for them to feel proud of it,” says De La Mora-Macias. “But at the same time, we want to show other communities what we’re about, and what our traditions and our cultures are.” Each year, the tour also visits migrant workers–the braceros– in the fields of California and Washington who travel from Mexico for seasonal work. “It’s amazing,” De La Mora-Macias says. “People don’t know—the colorful bus just arrives while working or having lunch. And the mariachi and the ballet dancers just come out. So it’s a very emotional moment for a lot of them.” “We bring Mexico to them,” she says, describing the joy of seeing these workers and all audiences witness the music and dances, and costumes of México en el Corazón. “For people who haven’t been able to go back to their hometowns, we bring that little piece of Mexico to them. And you can see it in their faces, you can see their joy.” “As a community, the Wood River Valley is a better place because of those with deep ties to Mexico,” says Bretall, “and this program provides an opportunity for our valley to come together to celebrate the important cultural gifts that Mexico offers.”
On Monday, June 5, the tour’s crew of 70, including dancers from the Ballet Folklorico Guadalajara and musicians from Mariachi Juvenil Colotlan and Banda Colores, will bring the heart of Mexico to Sun Valley in an event for all ages. The performers, representing the Mexican states of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Nuevo León, Chiapas, and Campeche, will take the audience on a magical journey from mariachi to norteño, banda, and marimba music. Their songs and movements are complemented by costumes designed by Ismael García, dress historian and director of Ballet Folklorico Guadalajara. “There’s a whole story behind every dress,” says De La Mora-Macias, noting how the costumes fit each region and period represented in the show. Through the event, NAIMA promotes cultural heritage and pride for the Mexican identity. Especially a pride of how Mexican immigrants to the U.S. have kept their rich cultures and traditions in their hearts.

Mayme Kratz: Shadow and Substance We are pleased to present Arizona artist Mayme Kratz’s mixed-media exhibition, “Shadow and Substance,” which will run from June 13-July 25. Kratz finds inspiration in Arizona’s harsh desert climate, collecting found organic materials such as bone fragments, poppy pods, grasses, and flowers, which she collects on long hikes in the surrounding area of her home and even on the train tracks behind her studio. She arranges this matter in circles, constellations, nests, and other forms before suspending it in resin against a painted panel. Materiality is heightened and diminished as the earthen matter transforms into a micro or macro ecosystem of its own. The process is time-consuming, toxic, and difficult, but for her, this act of preservation is an ode to the cyclical pattern of nature. “With my art, I celebrate the endless cycles of change and rebirth,” she explains. “I have great reverence for the natural world.” With this new series of works, Kratz pushes herself both artistically and physically to create pieces that celebrate our earth by changing how we experience the flora and fauna that surround us every day. When Kratz reminds us to pay attention to what is often overlooked, she evokes feelings of beauty, memory, and longing. Her work invites us to pause and celebrate nature and not take even the most prolific weed for granted. Beauty is truly in the eye of the observer. 178

Rodney Smith Retrospective: A Leap of Faith Rodney Smith (1947-2016) was a renowned New York-based photographer who, in the tradition of Avedon, Penn, and William Klein, transcended fashion photography into fine art. In a career that spanned over four decades, Smith’s iconic black and white photographs of Paris, New York, and French gardens often depicted romantic, grand scenes or reflected a quiet allure. Smith created photographs of timeless beauty and aesthetic value. His wit, humor, grace, and style live on in the photographs he magically created. Over the course of a successful career that lasted more than 45 years, Rodney Smith developed a unique photographic vision. In each of his carefully-crafted compositions, he banishes the chaos of modern life for another grounded in a romantic view of the past.

In Bloom celebrates Spring and the splendor of flora’s vibrant palette. The exhibition features different artists’ interpretations of botanicals across various mediums. This selection of artwork serves to illustrate the sensuous beauty of flowers, as well as the symbolism found within the cyclical nature of life. In her prints, Hung Liu adopts and interprets traditional Chinese images of flowers, incorporating their historical significance. Maggie Shafran reminds us of our own impermanence with her translation of flowers, which she calls “Little Pieces of Death.” Laura McPhee’s large-format photography captures the beauty of Idaho wildflowers while exploring the intersection of man and nature. Kathy Moss’s large-scale paintings serve as archetypes, relying on the psychological associations we assign to flowers. Works on a more intimate scale will also be featured, such as beeswax collages by Kenna Moser and chiaroscuro tulips by Michael Gregory. Additional artists include Betsy Margolius, Diane Andrews Hall, Jenny Abell, and Sheila Gardner, among others.

Color VI This group exhibition is composed of paintings, photographs, works on paper, and sculpture. This selection of artwork demonstrates the powerful response that color can elicit from the viewer. Linda Christensen layers pattern and color to set the stage for her figurative paintings. Bean Finneran’s hand-rolled ceramic sculptures are bright in color and playful in form. Rana Rochat’s encaustic works on paper use multiple layers of pigmented wax to create staggering depth and saturation. Gary Komarin uses his own iconography and bright pops of color to create post-painterly abstractions. Other featured artists include Cole Morgan, Allison Stewart, Jun Kaneko, Lisa Kokin, Lynda Lowe, and Marcia Myers, among others.

This group exhibition explores the artistic interpretation of our lands by nationally renowned painters, photographers, and sculptors. This includes work by Victoria Adams, whose carefully rendered oils recall the majesty and unadulterated landscapes of the Hudson River School. James Cook’s thickly painted oils are an epic and expressive interpretation of our landscapes, many of which depict the Sawtooths and surrounding mountain ranges. Michael Gregory’s iconic paintings of barns and homesteads reflect the beauty of isolation found in the western American landscape. Jun Kaneko This major exhibition features glazed and Raku-fired ceramic by internationally renowned sculptor Jun Kaneko. His initial start as a painter is evident in his sculpture, where monolithic ceramic “dangos” (the Japanese word for dumpling) become three-dimensional, inflated canvases. His graphic, yet painterly, lines and dots are analogous with the Japanese Shinto concept of the “Ma,” which loosely translates into “attachment through space.” Through intentional repetition of brushstrokes and motifs, Kaneko creates a kind of abstract imagery that is recognizable and uniquely his. Kaneko’s work can be found in more than 100 museum collections and institutions around the world. 184

Painter and printmaker Tom Hammick presents his first-ever solo exhibition at Gail Severn Gallery with recent work in both mediums. All prints are individually handmade by the artist in small editions through traditional relief or intaglio processes. His exceptional skill in the medium is evident in the multitude of colors he incorporates, as well as the magnificent scale of certain works. Hammick’s painting practice is symbiotically linked to that of his printing, both relying on the dynamic tension between positive and negative space. He approaches his paintings with confidence and puts intention behind each mark, carving into canvas like he would a woodblock. Hammick illustrates visionary scenes, often with ambiguous narratives, including mysterious figures. These emotive panoramas range from dreamy, romantic, and heroic; to lonely, contemplative, and nostalgic, with a strong sense of longing. Hammick invites the viewer on what feels like a fantastic journey home.

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art Lloyd Martin Friesen+Lantz opens its summer season with a symphony of color from renowned painter Lloyd Martin. Known internationally for his rhythmically constructed abstract canvases, Martin continues his engagement with tension and line in this outstanding body of work. Grounded in pictorial truth, these paintings hold a sense of movement, rhythm, and flow and also delight the eye as it is drawn along the forms and juxtapositions of brightly-hued, lush colors that are characteristic of the artist’s recent work. Architectural structure gives Martin’s paintings a sense of gravity, giving weight to flights of vibrant color. His chemistry of elements act as meditations—stimulating both visceral and cerebral responses from viewers. In critic Maureen Mullarkey’s words, Martin’s paintings “approach the character of music.” Critic John Goodman writes that his works “achieve a Mondrianesque climax of rhythm.”
Red Knot by Lloyd Martin oil on canvas 48” x 38”
Writers often reference Mondrian and music when describing Martin’s work. In these paintings, each note holds its own, yet there is a velocity of linear movement. Martin’s work is characterized by a sensuous quality in the sometimes-brushy aggression of one vibrant color pushing against another. For the viewer, there is a visual pleasure in editing details of the work, allowing the eye to settle on a square here, a rectangle there, and imagining paintings within paintings. Jeff Juhlin “My work seeks to reflect a sense of stillness, space, and the visual history of time evident in the western landscape... In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata created by erosion, wind, and water, both built up over eons and worn away by the elements in a continuous process... Typically I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented wax, oil, paper, cold wax, and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process.”

Christopher Gibson “My work is influenced by the remote landscapes I explore, contemplate, and navigate... Emotional experiences and memories may feel new, fade, age, and change just as the traits of the land are everchanging. For me, the layers of glass powders I use to create my work stimulate a physical and mental connection of elaborate and subtle lines, colors, and textures found in the places I frequent.”

PIONEER SALOON Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood. An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!” svpn-mag.com
