EDITOR’S WELCOME

REFLECTION AND PROGRESS

Embracing the holiday season and the upcoming new year, SVPN Magazine is ready for 2025. Looking back, 2024 was incredibly busy in our valley with events, construction, elections, and a never-ending gorgeous fall season. As we move forward, honoring the past is essential, as many people have provided a foundation that allows us to live in this incredible community today. They created a paradise many seek, so we must honor those who put in the work, time, and energy. And for 2025, get ready for the spotlight, as Sun Valley is in it!

In this edition, SVPN Magazine is excited to feature the Sun Valley Culinary Institute’s third annual Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration. Expanded and loaded with events including ten celebrity chefs, an array of excellent wines, and culinary mastery to enjoy, from chef dinners and cooking classes to an Après Ski Grand Tasting at the Limelight Hotel Ketchum and Britt’s Burger Bash at Apple’s Bar & Grill in Warm Springs—and so much more—you should give it a try. It will not disappoint and you will be supporting SVCI’s future food and hospitality workforce.

For the holiday season, there’s plenty to enjoy, including the Sun Valley Resort’s Winter Wonderland and concerts at The Argyros, including Country Music Award’s Musician of the Year Charlie Worsham returning to Ketchum for the second time this year. For more events, Now Showing has

new exhibitions for Gallery Walk on Friday, December 27, an excellent time to walk around Ketchum and attend holiday open houses.

In line with the upcoming World Cup, we have news on Soldier Mountain hosting the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team and the Stifel U.S. Freeski Team training camps. In addition, up in Stanley, read about the 12th Annual Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel presented by the Boise Curling Club. There are plenty of outdoor sporting events for all to enjoy for our winter season, along with this year’s early Nordic trail openings and a top-to-bottom Baldy run happening on opening day—keep that snow coming!

In this issue, we eye new properties in Hailey and Ketchum, including what’s happening on 5th & Main in Ketchum and new townhomes in Hailey. Learn about the quality of construction and ease of living in properties that cover the gamut of housing, from turnkey penthouses to affordable and convenient homes. Also, learn about how Sun Valley REALTORS Give is assisting the Wood River Valley’s workforce and Veterans with affordable housing and providing holiday gift baskets to those in need. It’s all connected, which is a lovely thought.

SVPN ’s January issue also covers the changing ownership at the Magic Lantern Cinemas, a 50-year-old business, now Merlin’s Magic Lantern, bought by a local who grew up inspired by attending movies at the classic local theater.

And if the New Year has you thinking about change, read about Shaman and her life’s work to provide wellness and happiness at the Shaman Healing Sanctuary in Ketchum. Also, in our Wellness section, we feature St. Luke’s Mental Well-Being Initiative and awards and CENTERED’s continuing efforts to provide alternative healing with a new podcast.

This issue has much more to read, including home décor ideas in Style Dial, the 2025 Dining Guide, real estate listings, and a new children’s book, Mountain Fly, a fun journey for all.

Stay safe, be mindful of others, and give a little…

Happy Holidays and New Year!

UNLEASH YOUR WANDERLUST WITH MOUNTAIN FLY

Dana Moloney authors children’s adventure book

Idaho attorney and former long-time Ketchum resident Dana Moloney and Austin, Texas-based artist Jim Keating collaborated in a working partnership to create a vibrant and inspiring children’s adventure book, Mountain Fly, which may have been a harbinger of Moloney’s own life. As it happened, Moloney and her husband Danny were on a post-ski season trip in their campervan to the beach on the West Coast when a trapped fly became a musing for this first story. After many years of development, Moloney’s gift for words and Keating’s imaging of that story became a reality with Mountain Fly

“I have been writing my entire life, but as a child, I created stories,” says Moloney. “After Mountain Fly was conceived, I knew my brother Wade’s best friend, Jim Keating, could bring my first Fly story to life by illustrating a unique and spirited character that would connect to many people of all ages. Mountain Fly is a part of anyone who dreams of taking an unknown and unexpected journey.”

Moloney first resided in Ketchum in the winter of 1994 during an extended break from law school. In 1998, she relocated permanently to the area, opening a law office in 2000. She also coached snowboarding for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation for eight years. She and Danny were part of the Wood River Valley community for decades and eventually became avid adventurers who traveled the world. After decades of living in the Sun Valley area, the couple recently relocated to Taos, New Mexico.

The first book in a series of adventure books, Mountain Fly, follows the journey of a fly, in its pink sneakers and yellow overalls, as it hitches a ride in a campervan traveling from the mountains to the beach. As a small creature on the open road, the fly is exposed to a vast and wild country, yet it finds peace and a place in nature despite the overwhelming size of the world. The fly’s passion for adventure, experiences, and the unknown is exciting, with the fly looking toward its first destination as a beginning, not an end.

Launched in the summer of 2023, Mountain Fly is an animated and beautifully executed journey about a fly who wants to travel and finds a way, embodying the very spirit of adventure. With superb rhythmic tone and rhyme by Moloney and exquisite illustrations by Keating, Mountain Fly is a story that encourages all humans to take a journey to see something

new and recreate. Moloney and Keating’s world is well-crafted for modern life and saturated in vibrant action and color. The duo has created a new being for which Mountain Fly is only the beginning. 

The Mountain Fly book is available at mountainflybook.com, Iconoclast Books in Hailey, Madeline & Oliver in Ketchum, Smiley Creek Lodge, Kasino Club in Stanley, and Elk River Books in Montana.

SOLDIER MOUNTAIN HOSTS U.S. SKI & SNOWBOARD TRAINING CAMPS

New partnership launched for rising star athletes

The Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals at Sun Valley Resort in March isn’t the only event drawing members of U.S. Ski & Snowboard to Idaho this winter. Nearby Soldier Mountain signed an agreement with the slopestyle teams for the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team and the Stifel U.S. Freeski Team to host their inaugural annual training camps in December and late March.

The southern Idaho ski area, best known as the resort that actor Bruce Willis used to own, will build a facility for the slopestyle teams to train on as part of the Soldier Mountain Snow Training Center, which will serve competitive athletes throughout the Western U.S. Designed by world-renowned terrain park builder Charles Beckinsale, the site will support the slopestyle teams’ needs for large-scale jumps, which are part of competition but not widely available to train on. Beckinsale will personally construct the training facility on Canyon Run underneath the High Trail Express Lift (Chair 1).

The three-year partnership has allowed Soldier Mountain to enhance its snowmaking system, with the resort recently acquiring new state-of-the-art TechnoAlpin TR10 snow guns. The move doubles Soldier Mountain’s snowmaking capacity and will ensure skiers and riders enjoy full top-to-bottom coverage on North Ridge and Canyon Runs.

“This is a huge win for a small, independent ski resort like Soldier Mountain,” says Soldier Mountain General

Colby Stevenson, a Stifel U.S. Freeski Team slopestyle team member since 2014

Manager David Alden. “One of the things that makes Soldier Mountain so attractive is that we’re small enough to be nimble and eager to try new things. And U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s financial and philosophical commitment to a small ski area like Soldier Mountain will ensure we offer a sustainable domestic training venue for the world’s best snowsports athletes for many years to come.”

Leadership at U.S. Ski & Snowboard concur. Teaming up with a small mountain complements U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s affiliation with the Indy Pass, with Soldier Mountain one of seven Idaho Indy Pass partners. The resort’s proximity to Utah—Soldier Mountain is under five hours away by car from U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s headquarters in Park City— eases logistics and is a good fit with the team’s Easy Green environmental initiative by reducing the carbon footprint of its training travel.

“Soldier Mountain has presented us with a unique opportunity to build world-class jumps in the USA at a time of year that will give our slopestyle teams a huge advantage going into the competition season,” says Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team Sport Director Rick Bower.

Stifel U.S. Freeski Team Sport Director Skogen Sprang agrees, adding that the teams are “excited to explore a new location that is so passionate about freeskiing and snowboarding and are looking forward to seeing what kind of magic Soldier Mountain can make up there.”

Alden is very excited about the new training facility’s impact on rising stars in the snowboard and freeski scene. “U.S. Ski & Snowboard is dedicated to creating training opportunities at the grassroots level,” Alden says. “Bringing a training venue of this magnitude to the western region gives up-and-coming snowboarders and freeskiers looking to compete at a higher level but can’t afford to travel far to train an unprecedented opportunity to hone their big-air skills. It’s like the major leagues building a new stadium for the minor leagues because they realize they need to nurture the next generation of pros.” 

2025 SUN VALLEY FOOD & WINE CELEBRATION

Elevating Your Culinary

Experience

For its third year, the 2025 Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration is expanding its days, events, chefs, vintners, and culinary experiences to rival some of the nation’s best food festivals. A Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI) event, the 2025 Celebration boasts a ten-chef roster of James Beard Award-winning chefs, “Chopped” champions, Tournament of Champions participants, and acclaimed restauranters boasting many other highly coveted culinary arts accolades for six days of food and wine events.

The planning and execution of this culinary summit could be easily equated with organizing a small army. Sourcing special types of caviar, choosing wines from Sonoma, ordering multiple cuts of beef, shipping Kanpachi, storing pounds of vegetables, and making sure there are enough napkins, dishes, and glasses for everyone are just a few of the multitude of tasks that take place to create this exceptional event. You may never know what happens in the kitchen because what matters is what is being served—the look, the taste, and the experience of a culinary creation.

Through the generous sponsorship of SVCI supporters and donors, 2025 offers more dinners, classes, and events where attendees can have first-hand experiences with chefs, vintners, and culinary professionals, including a special women in food and hospitality chef event, cooking classes, wine seminars, the Grand Tasting at the Limelight Hotel, or Britt’s Burger Bash at Apple’s Bar & Grill in Warm Springs, which is open to the public.

“It’s an honor to accommodate the culinary desires of so many food purveyors, top chefs, and winemakers who expressed an interest in joining SVCI for this year’s Celebration, raising the caliber of offerings for 2025,” says SVCI Executive Director Karl Uri. “We are excited to grow the Grand Tasting at the Limelight Hotel for the second year, provide more wine seminars and cooking classes, and offer patrons many opportunities to enjoy chef dinners, expanding their food knowledge and palates with imagination and delicious culinary creations. In addition, we invite the community for the third annual Britt’s Burger Bash at Apple’s Bar & Grill, where chefs and attendees can mingle at the foot of Baldy in Warm Springs—celebrating Sun Valley at its best with gourmet burgers and skiing.”

The Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration offers an ultimate week of delicious food and wine events with dinners, parties, classes, tastings, and more for sponsors, donors, culinary aficionados, and the rest of us who love to eat and drink. However, what’s most exciting is that the Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration offers SVCI students an opportunity to work side-by-side with the top chefs and food professionals, which is a rare and unique experience for culinary students—at any culinary school. In addition, proceeds from the Celebration will support SVCI’s students in their education and workforce development in Sun Valley.

SUN VALLEY FOOD & WINE CELEBRATION

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN CULINARY

Chef Britt Rescigno and Chef Kinsey Leodler, owners of Fiamma Sun Valley, opening in the winter/spring of 2025, will give a taste of what’s to come at the Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration Welcome Party for sponsors, donors, and ticket holders. In addition, they have brought together their friends Chef Crista Luedtke and Chef Kelsey Barnard Clark, first-time chefs to the Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration, to launch an all-female dinner, “Empower and Savor: A Celebration of Women in Culinary in partnership with Phifer Pavitt Wine and Veuve Clicquot.”

The all-female chef team will create a five-course dinner with wine pairings by woman-owned Phifer Pavitt at a private residence. Diners will enjoy a welcome glass of champagne while Julien Pardes from LVMH tells the story of the icon Madame Clicquot. The dinner will conclude with dessert paired with Rose La Grande Dame Veuve Clicquot.

“We have seen a lot of potential for this event, and we wanted to add an event to empower women and celebrate women in the culinary arts,” says Rescigno. “It can expand, do different things, and celebrate different aspects of food and community.”

Rescigno points out that it is important to recognize women because it is not equal for women in the culinary world, and women need more recognition for how incredible they are and how hard they work and produce. “Men think of women as pastry chefs or front of the house, not an executive chef,” says Leodler. “Women are emerging and pushing for recognition thats much deserved.”

Rescigno has been a chef competitor on Tournament of Champions, the top culinary competition show, which is blind-judged, and for the last five years, women have won, not men. “Tournament of Champions VI is coming, and I am on it,” says Rescigno. “However, our real focus is Fiamma Sun Valley.

Leodler adds, “Britt and I had looked all over the country for where we wanted to put a restaurant. When building and creating the concept, we did not anticipate it would be in Sun Valley. We realized there was a lot of value in opening a restaurant where we put our roots down. We fell in love with Sun Valley and decided there was a lot of value for where we wanted to be. There was a sense of community in Sun Valley that was attractive to us, and we were grateful to find somewhere. This is what we wanted and what we wanted in our lives.”

For the 2025 Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration Welcome Party, Chefs Rescigno and Leodler are planning a night of aperitivos inspired by their honeymoon trip to Italy. They spent three weeks enjoying the country and its cuisine.

“We will be serving Venetian cicchettis and traditional arancinis highlighting the things we loved in Italy,” says Rescigno. “We returned inspired and want to showcase it for the Welcome Party and things you will see at Fiamma.”

Leodler adds, “Fiamma is a blend of us and the brainchild of combining our two backgrounds and culinary passions and being inspired by Idaho. We love to cook with fire and the flavor of smoke and wood—it’s primitive and returns to the basics of what we love about food. Bringing something new but returning to traditional cooking with things made by hand and cooked over a fire offers an elevated experience, but with ski jackets hung at the door.”

SPOTLIGHT CULINARY EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES

This 2025 Sun Valley Food & Wine Celebration features the return of several celebrity chefs and the welcoming of new ones, who will all contribute to the Grand Tasting at the Limelight Hotel, which is open to the public with tickets available at sunvalleyculinary.org.

This year, the Celebration welcomes Dexter and Crystal McKenzie, owners of the Sun Valley Wine Co., who are hosting several wine seminars and offering some of their favorite vintners, including Ghostblock and Barnett wines. SVCI welcomes returning vintners AXR, Blackbird, and J. Dirt, bringing their favorite vintages, newcomers Whispering Angel, and some champagne bubbles from LVMH.

BRITT’S BURGER BASH AT APPLE’S BAR & GRILL IN WARM SPRINGS

For the third year, Chef Britt Rescigno dials in the Sun Valley ski town vibe with her signature Britt’s Burger Bash at Apple’s, with DJ Marlin returning with her great party picks for a classic après ski party on Saturday, February 1. “This is one of the most fun things I get to do,” says Rescigno. “Kinsey and I get to think about what kind of burger we want to sink our teeth into and make it a reality for the public.”

Rescigno’s delicious and savory burgers combined with a cold draft beer are why we love food and how it brings us all together. Whether you just had a great day on Baldy or came for the après, be sure to join the party. Apple’s owner Hank Minor and his wife Heather will greet you with a smile, and you will get to hang with Celebration chefs for a taste of old-school ski town culture—no matter the weather!

“This special event is open to the public and celebrates the local ski culture,” says Leodler. “During the Food & Wine Celebration, we introduce other chefs to the area, and they get to understand the local culture and attend as diners who are not working. We push the chefs to attend so they can see what Sun Valley is all about. All the attending chefs think it is a unique and fun food and wine event.”

Rescigno adds, “Who doesn’t love an excuse to have burgers and a party together, right?”

No tickets are needed to attend this event.

DISCOVER A PATH TO HEALING

Shaman Healing Sanctuary can lead the way

As we embrace a new year, it has become second nature to use the time to relaunch, restart, rethink, or even wipe the slate clean of last year’s bad habits or those things that no longer serve us. However, change can happen at any time, whether naturally caused or purposeful, no matter the time of year.

“Change is always occurring, and everything has purpose and meaning,” says Shaman of the Shaman Healing Sanctuary, who is a healer. “Holding on to fear instead of acting and creating healing and not disruption is an opportunity for transformation in any negative situation.”

Throughout many decades of providing healing, Shaman’s work, although a gift from birth, has been honed from mentorships with Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama. Possessing an intuition with a higher source of guidance and inspiration, Shaman has the unique ability to clear people’s paths for purpose, often leading to great success.

Shaman arrived in Sun Valley more than 30 years ago as a guest, and discovered a powerful vortex is here. Her knowledge of vortex power came from studying with a Hopi Native American Shaman. “It’s vibration energy and a foundation to connecting to a frequency and our purpose,” says Shaman. “Any human who comes to Sun Valley is focused on purpose and foundation. It’s a place to create balance and strength in your root chakra— the ability to connect to who you are—self-love and worth.”

Like so many healers and wellness-seeking practitioners before her, Shaman has been able to provide many services for those seeking alternative solutions, including high-vibrational energy crystals, intuitive life coaching sessions, guided shamanic meditation classes, and other offerings at the Shaman Healing Sanctuary in Ketchum.

“Many of my clients and people I work with have negative side effects to medicine, which include depression or suicidal thoughts,” says Shaman. “Everything in the universe is frequency. We are energy, the earth is energy, nature is energy, and crystals are energy.” She adds, “When I work with people, we change the frequency of energy and what is created, the blockages and interference inside of them, and we work on those emotions to get rid of whatever is building that tension. You feel different once energy flows, much like cleaning a drainage pipe.”

Intuitive work and meditation groups and moving blockages all help assess life’s meaning with no judgment—and it’s nondenominational. It’s an alternative way to heal emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually, and even financially.

“I teach this a great deal,” Shaman shares. “When you allow yourself to do your purpose, you don’t need to depend on anyone because when you are doing your purpose, you will always have prosperity. When you are not, you will struggle.” She adds, “When living with a healthy purpose, you can contribute to community. My work allows for the most organic way of healing oneself. When you show up and accomplish, it’s a beautiful space—putting yourself as a priority and learning to invest in yourself organically and naturally. Every human on the planet has an intuition. It’s a gut reaction. It’s in your stomach. It’s knowledge and knowing all feelings.”

Shaman spends as much time as possible at Shaman Healing Sanctuary. However, she also tries to put every dime she

“To help a person, you have to go deep within so that they can be transformed completely to find purpose, soulmates, and a mission.”

can into her nonprofit, the House of Angels Foundation. Founded over 20 years ago and inspired by Mother Teresa, the foundation helps children live their purpose, which Shaman feels strongly about, especially in her connection to God and the universe.

“Over the years, we have created orphanages and healing centers around the world and also helped people escape domestic violence, sex trafficking, addiction, and more,” she says. “The goal is to spread healing and create sanctuaries for those seeking their higher selves and connection with the universe. There are a lot of beautiful places in the world, and I’ve traveled the world to the most spiritual places, but Sun Valley’s energy is so much about stability that I’ve made it my home to do this work.”

As a individual, spiritual healer, and intuitive life coach, Shaman helps to clear negativity in the world. She helps those who seek a higher existence through wellness centers, courses, and radio shows, and she also works as a traveling speaker offering more availability because she wants everyone to have an opportunity to seek out healing and provide solutions.

“There is no quick fix,” says Shaman. “To help a person, you have to go deep within so that they can be transformed completely to find purpose, soulmates, and a mission.” 

THE MAGIC LANTERN BECOMES MERLIN’S MAGIC LANTERN

New ownership continues the movie-going legacy

Rick Kessler moved to Sun Valley in 1972 at the age of 25 and in 1974 opened the Magic Lantern Cinemas at the Odd Fellows Hall on Washington Avenue in Ketchum. He chose Magic Lantern based on the 17th-century magic lantern technology that laid the foundation for modern movie projectors and the Groucho Marx logo, emblematic of Rick’s mild-mannered wit and affinity for classic movies.

A diehard movie lover with a very dry sense of humor and a love of people, Rick embarked on a 50-year journey of being an exhibitionist—a place where the community, visitors, and tourists could watch the latest and greatest movies. Eventually, Rick married his wife Cherie, a member of the Fabulous Vuarnettes who loves theater and gardening, and they raised two children.

Magic Lantern became one of the first movie theaters in the U.S. to serve beer and wine, elevating the movie-going experience.

He eventually, expanded the cinema to its current Second Avenue location. At one point a competiting theater, Ski Time Cinema, decided to occupy a space in the Magic Lantern Cinemas’ building—an unlikely scenario in any town. Ski Time Cinema finally left, and that’s another story, but Rick prevailed, expanding the Magic Lantern Cinemas with the addition of the “Screening Rooms”. Rick continued offering new releases as the movie exhibition industry changed and held his film festivals in spring and fall. The Magic Lantern Fall Film Festival lasted 30 years.

“I started the film festival because it allowed me to screen films, indies, that did not get the marketing exposure like the bigger Hollywood studio films,” says Rick Kessler. “We wanted to do something different. Originally, it was started to compete with the baseball playoffs as an alternative entertainment for the slack season because nothing was happening. Over the decades, I was always trying to enhance the movie-going experience with stereophonic sound and comfortable seating, and many other upgrades.”

Through movie clubs, fundraisers, private showings, and a loyal audience that included celebrities, Academy voters, and many in the film industry, Rick created a Ketchum institution that, even through a pandemic, managed to survive.

He provided an environment that took us away from reality for an hour and a half or more, allowing us to enjoy the movie experience along with our community with delicious popcorn, candy, and our favorite drinks. As Rick retires from actively operating the theater in a very smooth and friendly transition, he now wonders what to do with 21,000 movie posters.

Many generations of Sun Valley families, visitors, and patrons look forward to watching movies in the Magic Lantern. For some, it’s one of their favorite memories of living in Sun Valley, their first date, weekly date, or girls’ night out—going to the movies has always been special in Ketchum.

The Sun Valley community has been experiencing many changes, and thanks to Bob Peterson and his wife, Taylor Deering, not only will our local movie theater stay open, but it’s being renamed Merlin’s Magic Lantern, after their dog, Merlin, a twelve-year-old rescued-Schnauzer mix, and will remain open with many exciting plans to come.

“Our long-term plan is to provide a premium destination for locals, families, and visitors with entertainment, food, and more. Being a producer myself, I appreciate the value of presenting a film on the silver screen for both the audience and the filmmaker.”

it’s being renamed Merlin’s Magic Lantern, after their rescue dog, Mystical Merlin the Magical Mutt, a twelve-year-old Schnauzer mix, and will remain open with many exciting new plans to come.

Peterson, a native of the Wood River Valley, found his love for cinema at the Magic Lantern, which inspired him to become a filmmaker. “We all needed things to do growing up here, and going to the movies was a huge part of my childhood,” says Bob.

After receiving degrees in film and business, Bob pursued careers in both realms while simultaneously producing independent films such as The Last Full Measure, Camera Store, and Bit. “Being a producer myself, I appreciate the value of presenting a film on the silver screen for both the audience and the filmmaker. I want to bring as much content, both mainstream and indie, as possible.”

Bob and Taylor have an incredible passion for design and technology that will serve the theater well in its upcoming revamping. “So much of what Bob has been working on so far has been directed toward our technical and state-of-the-art improvements,” says Taylor. “Bob’s been a lifelong technophile, which is why he is very well suited for filmmaking and movie exhibition. Although operating a theater is a new and constant learning outlet, he is completely immersed in the experience and bringing specialized talent in to create a one-of-a-kind theater.”

Improvements are already happening with an eight-bottle wine dispenser, ornate multi-beer tap, credit card payments, and online ticketing. Along with brand-new Lutron Ketra lighting and networking infrastructure, the theater is now the first in the U.S. to use a cutting-edge software platform from Germany to automate the scheduling and control of the auditoriums.

For the entry and lobby level, Bob and Taylor are working on ideas to create a more intimate yet flexible high-end theater space and a larger lobby with more concessions and dining options. Upcoming remodeling will involve a revamping of the theater seating and reworking the bathrooms as well as reimagined lobby and concessions. The goal is to make it as enjoyable and functional as possible.

“Rick has been in business for a long time, and we wish to honor his efforts by ensuring the continuation and expansion of this theater,” says Bob. “I am so grateful and excited, and I get to see how much this theater means to everyone. People come quite regularly. It is a rhythm, and hopefully, this will bring others back, too.”

Bob adds, “Rick kept the theater going for 50 years through many changes, COVID, Hollywood strikes, and so much more. I don’t know if I could have survived all that as Rick did, but it will help by automating and streamlining things. I am very impressed with how Rick could do all he did. It’s a lot of serious work dealing with studios.”

The majority of the changes so far are upstairs in the projection booth. It’s an incredible space with numerous improvements to everything from the sound processors to updated HVAC systems. “It’s like going into a spaceship with the lighting and layout,” says Taylor. “It has a color-coded lighting system that informs the projectionist of what’s playing. The idea was to create an experience like the cockpit of an airplane.”

Expect big movies for the holiday season and beyond for 2025, with many more events and improvements at Merlin’s Magic Lantern. Bob and Taylor are thrilled to be part of such a special Ketchum institution. It will be exciting to see what’s to come, but in the meantime, see a movie and get to know Merlin! 

S.O.B. ROCK STARS

12th annual Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel slides into Stanley

After last fall’s scorching in the Sawtooths and the searing of a tourist season, here’s to reigniting a fire to hearten the soul of Stanley, for there’s no better time than winter and the annual Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel, S.O.B., for visiting the oftcoldest town in the country and showing them a little warm love. Winter here is beastly, a little crazy, and a lot of fun, and this event is no different when the cries of “Whoa!” and “Hurry Hard!” ring through the frosty air, and the winning stone comes gliding smoothly down the ice. It’s curling, the game with the ice, the rocks, the sweeping, the yelling, and the beer.

The S.O.B. is a 16-team, three-day open bonspiel (curling tournament) with a three-game guarantee held on the unique outdoor ice rink at the foot of the Sawtooths. For the 12th year, the Boise Curling Club has hosted this epic weekend, which begins at 5pm on Friday, January 31, and ends at noon on Sunday, February 2. Two teams will take turns pushing 44-pound granite stones down a sheet of ice to a 12’ bullseye almost 150’ away. Each team throws 8 rocks, and the team closest to the center after all the rocks are thrown (or slid) will score the points. This process is repeated for 6-10 rounds called “ends” until one team is victorious. Stones are delivered with a predetermined rotation, so they curl as they travel the ice. Whoever has the most points wins. It’s that simple—and that strategic.

Peppermint schnapps in the morning cocoa is a must while cheering on teams with names like ‘Bambi Killers,’ ‘Wasted Stones,’ or ‘Rocks in the Kettle House.

“Every year, we get teams from all over the United States, including Canada,” says Jared Belsher, S.O.B. committee member. “It has become so popular that registration fills up within seconds of opening, so we’ve opted for a lottery registration system to make it more fair for everyone. If a team doesn’t get in one year, we set it up so that their odds of getting in the next year are significantly increased.”

Spectators are welcome, and attendance is free. Cheering and off-ice activities are worth the trip alone. The bonspiel includes a banquet, a rink-side heated tent, and fire barrels to keep curlers and spectators warm. Come prepared. One winter’s competition was 15 degrees below, and for a Stanley winter, you never know. Peppermint schnapps in the morning cocoa is a must while cheering on teams with names like ‘Bambi Killers,’ ‘Wasted Stones,’ or ‘Rocks in the Kettle House.’

The first recorded curling match was around the year 1540 and has a long history in Scotland. Scottish immigrants popularized the sport in North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The first U.S. club emerged in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1829. Even today, the flavor and camaraderie at the Stanley

S.O.B. is aptly described in the words of one 1700s Parish Minister of Scotland who wrote of curling in the parish life: “The victors claim from the vanquished the dinner and bowl of toddy, which, to do them justice, both commonly take together with great cordiality, and generally without any grudge at the fortune of the day; wisely reflecting, no doubt, that defeat, as well as victory, is the fate of war. Those accustomed to this amusement or who have acquired dexterity in the game are extremely fond of it. The amusement itself is healthful; it is innocent; it does nobody harm; let them enjoy it.”

Early February Stanley events include the Stanley Skating Club’s 8th Annual Draw Pond Hockey Tournament, February 1-3, with registration open beginning in January. Bring your appetite north for good eats and great events. On February 9, the Superbowl game will be shown on the big screen at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall with food and drink specials and a lively party atmosphere. 

SUN VALLEY POLICY FORUM

Embracing Western Values and Championing Truth in a Complex World

As the world grapples with increasing global tensions and accelerating change, the need to champion Western values and articulate a clear vision for American leadership has never been more pressing. The Sun Valley Policy Forum (SVPF) continues to take center stage in this dialogue with the launch of its 2025 season, inviting residents and visitors alike to participate in crucial discussions that will shape the future. This year’s programming, Geopolitical Disruptions and American Competitiveness: Navigating Domestic and International Challenges, promises to engage audiences in a thoughtful discussion of the intricate interplay between global and local issues.

SVPF is proud to announce its partnering with the National Review Institute (NRI) for the 2025 season. Strategic alliances like these amplify the national visibility of the SVPF and underscores its commitment to providing rich dialogue on the future of America’s role in the world.

One of the highlights of the season will be the esteemed British author and commentator Douglas Murray, who will speak on February 10, 2025, at the Argyros Performing Arts Center. His timely conversation, “The West at a Crossroads: Reimagining American Leadership on the Global Stage,” promises to provide invaluable insights in a post-U.S. election landscape. As the nation faces growing challenges to Western values and freedom, Murray’s perspectives will illuminate upcoming foreign policy directions, identifying threats and shaping robust strategies to safeguard American interests while reinforcing the commitment to Western ideals.

SVPF’s vision is clear: to serve as a premier gathering place for policy leaders, economists, business leaders, and engaged citizens to discuss national issues while fostering meaningful connections that enrich the community. By embracing topics such as the rise of authoritarianism, shifting trade dynamics, energy security, and artificial intelligence. SVPF aims to empower attendees with the knowledge and insights needed to navigate an increasingly complex world. Throughout the 2025 season, programming will delve into important themes such as:

St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation invests in mental health

Since its launch last year, Blaine County’s Mental Well-Being Initiative (MWBI) has envisioned a future of mental well-being in the Wood River Valley, shaped by the input and needs of our diverse community. Spearheaded by the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) in response to a clear need for improved mental health resources, the MWBI brings together over 39 partners from across sectors—including local government, healthcare, nonprofits, education, business, and religious organizations—to build a mental well-being ecosystem through a shared vision and collaborative approach.

Chief Development Officer of St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Megan Tanous explains, “We’re focused on building the infrastructure for ongoing collaboration to prioritize our community’s mental health for years to come. Through monthly workgroups, partner organizations and community members are refining objectives and identifying tactics to achieve our shared

“By providing young children with tools to calm their minds, improve attention, and foster kindness, mindfulness practices can significantly enhance their wellbeing now and in the future.”

vision. These gatherings help us align our efforts and ensure we move forward together.”

Over the past few months, the team has been charting a path forward and securing early wins. At its September board meeting, the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Board of Directors awarded a series of grants to support the Wood River community’s mental well-being. “Thanks to the $30,000 in St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation’s funding, we’re excited to roll out Sanarai, an online therapy program specifically designed for Spanish speakers,” says MWBI Project Manager Jenna Vagias.

This pilot program will offer over 700 sessions of professional online therapy, delivered in Spanish by native speakers, with support from local case managers. The online therapy program will be offered through partnerships with organizations like the St. Luke’s Center for Community Health, The Hunger Coalition,

Family Health Services, and The Alliance of Idaho. “It’s a major step toward expanding mental health services for our Spanish-speaking population,” says Tanous.

In addition, SLWRF provided $41,000 to the St. Luke’s Center for Community Health Counseling Scholarship Fund, which helps to defray the high costs of mental health counseling for people in need, eliminating the financial barriers that prevent access to counseling.

“Given the high demand for mental health services, the need to provide assistance for people to access community-based counselors is high, despite St. Luke’s having its own mental health counselors. We continue to provide this assistance to people seeking therapy support with providers outside of St. Luke’s,” says St. Luke’s Wood River’s Director of Community Health & Engagement Sarah Seppa. These critical counseling

sessions help address a wide range of mental health issues, including suicide, parenting, anxiety, and depression. Seppa adds, “Treatment of underlying mental health issues through behavioral health therapy, particularly for those with limited or no resources, is crucial to the health of our community.”

In addition to addressing access, the initiative is also working on prevention. Recognizing that depression is on the rise in Blaine County youth, the Blaine County Mental WellBeing Initiative has made prevention a key goal of its work. To support prevention strategies, the SLWR Foundation has made a three-year $35,000 per year investment in the Haileybased Flourish Foundation. This investment will help expand mindfulness programs in early childhood education. Funding will allow 70% of K-2 Blaine County classrooms to offer mindfulness programs.

Executive Director of Flourish Foundation Ryan Redman emphasizes the program’s impact: “Focusing on these early years helps children develop foundational strategies for mental balance, resilience, and social harmony. Research shows that early childhood experiences are key to shaping long-term cognitive and emotional development. By providing young children with tools to calm their minds, improve attention, and foster kindness, mindfulness practices can significantly enhance their well-being now and in the future.” The grant will also support a teacher mindfulness cohort, bringing 12 educators together for a 9-month program. Redman adds, “This funding allows us to dedicate staff time to build youth mentorship programs.”

To measure the impact of the critical work to address mental health in Blaine County, the MWBI has been invited to join the Katz Amsterdam Foundation’s Shared Measurement Framework. This collaborative effort tracks behavioral health data across eight mountain resort communities in the western U.S. The shared measurement framework will allow the MWBI to track progress on goals for years and allow for comparable data to similar mountain communities.

“Joining the Katz Amsterdam Foundation’s ongoing focus on mental and behavioral health in the Mountain West will go a long way to assist us as we track our progress towards achieving our goal of becoming the most mentally well community in the United States,” says Vagias. The Blaine County Mental Well-Being Initiative continues to collaborate on goals identified by the community, including building stronger connections, offering mental health trainings, improving access to care, and enhancing crisis response.

The aim is to meet the mental health needs of everyone in the community, from prevention to all levels of care. The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has funded the Initiative’s work thus far and, this spring, committed to three more years of funding to ensure expert collaboration coordination. Achieving meaningful and lasting success will require engagement and investment from community partners and leaders, along with continued support from all county residents. Tanous says, “We invite everyone who cares about our community’s health and well-being to stay engaged and look for opportunities to contribute your time, talent, and resources as we move forward together.” 

ST. LUKE’S HEALTH SYSTEM RECOGNIZED FOR PROMOTING WELL-BEING AND REDUCING BURNOUT

St. Luke’s Health System has earned silver recognition from the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine™ health organization. The prestigious AMA distinction is granted to organizations that meet the rigorous criteria of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program and acknowledges the nation’s leaders in prioritizing proven efforts to enhance the well-being and professional fulfillment of physicians. The honor is valid for two years.

St. Luke’s Health System’s Medical Director for Physician and APP Well-being, Katie Schneider, MD, comments, “It’s exciting to be recognized for our well-being efforts and so much more exciting to see the outcomes and impacts to my colleagues.”

After peaking during the COVID-19 pandemic, the physician burnout rate nationally has dipped under 50 percent for the first time in four years. This is a milestone in preventing and reducing physician burnout, but continued efforts are essential to ensure doctors receive the support they need to thrive and achieve national health goals. ST. LUKE’S HEALTH SYSTEM HONORED BY THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

“Physicians are humans caring for other human beings, strained by factors beyond their control and challenged by the enormous expectations placed on them to continuously deliver high-quality, compassionate care. There is no doubt change is needed, but what needs to change is not the doctors,” says AMA President Bruce A. Scott, M.D. “A national movement is gaining momentum to transform health care work systems and fix the root causes of physician burnout. Health organizations that have earned the AMA’s Joy in Medicine recognition are leading this movement with bold visions for redesigned clinical systems to foster professional well-being and support quality care.”

Christine Sinsky, M.D. and AMA Vice President of Professional Satisfaction, adds, “The goal of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program is to equip health systems with evidenceinformed strategies that promote physician well-being. Reducing burnout requires health system leaders to invest in systems-based solutions that provide resources to match the demands placed on physicians. There is so much health systems can do to improve physician well-being while also improving patient care. We designed the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program to provide leaders with an actionable road map to solutions that will help physicians and patients thrive.”

Schneider also adds, “What’s most meaningful to me about this recognition is that it not only acknowledges our efforts but also provides an evidence-based framework that has helped improve

well-being metrics for our institution. St. Luke’s burnout rate is under 35% in 2024. Our mini-z data (AMA’s wellbeing survey) showed a reduction in burnout by 20% in the past two years and decreased our likelihood of leaving by 15%, suggesting a stabilizing workforce.”

Regarding the efforts at St. Luke’s, Schneider says, “Well-being has many facets to it, and it’s been important to think about this work from a system opportunity standpoint, not an individual resiliency challenge. Based on our internal data of what correlated most with burnout, we chose to focus on leading with well-being and developing both physician, APP, and non-clinical leaders with leading with well-being trainings. We have an additional focus on practice efficiency, including evaluating AI as a benefit and improving in-basket flow. Combining these efforts are necessary to continue to improve in this arena.”

Since its inception in 2019, the AMA Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program has recognized more than 100 organizations across the country. In 2024, a total of 62 health systems nationwide earned recognition with documented efforts to reduce systemlevel drivers of work-related burnout and demonstrated competencies in commitment, assessment, leadership, efficiency of practice environment, teamwork, and support. These 2024 organizations join a strong cohort of currently recognized organizations from the 2023 program.

INTEGRATING MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT

A Solutions-Based Approach at CENTERED

At CENTERED, we offer efficient solutions for those struggling with anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, or autoimmune conditions. Our team provides a unique, solution-focused approach encouraging individuals to find balance, health, and happiness. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, our methodology integrates mind, body, and spirit, creating a foundation for true and lasting well-being.

At the heart of our philosophy is the concept of becoming “centered,” a resilient way of being where we face life’s challenges with clarity and empowerment. Our methods for achieving this centered state and strategies to address deep-seated issues affecting mental and physical health are innovative, lasting, and transformative. Our core modalities use neurologically-based methods to achieve solutions previously not thought possible to attain healthy and bulletproof immunity, a pain-free body, steady optimism, joy in life, and peak performance at every age.

THE FOUNDATION OF SOLUTION-BASED THERAPY

Unlike many therapeutic models that dwell on past trauma or manage ongoing symptoms, our solution-based approach encourages individuals to focus on practical, forward-looking strategies while giving them the tools to accomplish this. This method builds resilience by focusing on empowerment and positive change. Solution-based therapy acknowledges the past but emphasizes actionable steps to move forward in combination with neurologically-based techniques that reset the nervous system to accomplish these goals. By addressing anxiety, pain, and autoimmune responses through this lens, we offer a pathway to health that is both accessible and transformative.

Our core modalities use neurologicallybased methods to achieve solutions previously not thought possible to attain healthy and bulletproof immunity, a painfree body, steady optimism, joy in life, and peak performance at every age.

CENTERED LAUNCHES PODCAST

As 2025 unfolds, CENTERED is poised for cutting-edge growth, including the launch of its highly anticipated podcast, CENTERED Presents: The Future of Health, debuting in January. Hosted by Dr. Molly Brown and Christina Walecka, this podcast will delve into groundbreaking discussions on the future of wellness and natural medicine. Other key milestones include the World Cup Athlete’s Lounge, National Reset Retreats in collaboration with Higher Ground, an upcoming documentary, and expansion to the Boise area.

In solution-based therapy, the focus shifts from merely surviving to actively creating the conditions for well-being and an empowered life. This approach is powerful because it builds confidence and fosters independence. It teaches individuals to take ownership of their health while supporting them in making progress. This emphasis on solutions rather than problems is a breakthrough for those feeling stuck or overwhelmed.

UNDERSTANDING THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

The profound connection between mental and physical health is a concept increasingly supported by scientific research. Chronic stress, unresolved trauma, and emotional distress can and often will manifest as physical symptoms. Anxiety

can amplify pain, while traumatic experiences often leave a lingering impact on the body, contributing to autoimmune flare-ups and chronic pain.

Our approach allows individuals to recognize this interconnectedness, process it, and move forward. By addressing emotional healing, mental well-being, and neurological resilience, individuals see improvements in physical symptoms. The mind-body link and our modalities that efficiently address it is a practical framework for understanding and addressing the root causes of many health issues.

HEALING FROM TRAUMA

Trauma is often at the root of many physical and emotional conditions. Trauma can disrupt the nervous system, leaving individuals in a constant state of hypervigilance. This heightened stress response not only affects mental health but can also exacerbate physical symptoms and contribute to conditions like chronic pain and autoimmune disorders.

Our trauma-healing approach centers on a neurologicallybased approach using neurofeedback and QNRT. Neurofeedback trains the brain towards healthier patterns while the QNRT “resets” the nervous system to past or situational stresses, relationships, or past conditions. When the brain balances these situations, the nervous system responds immediately.

PAIN RESOLUTION

Pain overwhelms us. Our solution-based approach to pain is outstanding. We use the AMIT method to correct neuromuscular pain and QNRT to balance the brain and nervous system, along with Live O2, Shockwave, and PEMF. With this combination of modalities and appropriate followthrough, even the most challenging cases of pain can move forward. And we don’t stop at living pain-free–we aim for the highest expression of human life and performance possible, and that is what we offer, time and time again.

Our lifestyle choices reiterate, on a daily basis, health and happiness or pain and sickness. We are here to support and bring awareness to this process and the power that lies within us to be happy, healthy, high-energy, and optimistic individuals. 

MOUNTAIN MODERN LUXURY

River Street Residential

MID RVR, the newest contemporary four-level townhome development, is underway on River Street in Hailey, which continues to evolve as an intentional corridor for sophisticated urban housing. The development, which builds on the success of the nearby 410 RVR project, offers mountain living at its finest, centrally located in the Wood River Valley. Set at the foot of Carbonate Mountain in the heart of Hailey, within walking distance of vibrant dining, retail, cultural events, and outdoor pursuits, Croy Canyon sunsets never looked so good.

With modern architectural lines and minimalist design, MID RVR is another imaginative housing solution by CK Property Group, a development firm based in Boise, which focuses on modern “for sale”

townhome residences. In tandem with the award-winning design team of Pivot North Architecture, also Boise-based, and Conrad Brothers General Contractors of Ketchum, this collection of ten luxury townhomes provides a convenient lock-and-leave, relaxed lifestyle refuge for outdoor enthusiasts in this thriving Idaho community. Its location on River Street is part of the Hailey Urban Renewal Agency’s Gateway District, a beautiful vision for the city, including streetscapes, historic street lights, potted plants, a bike lane, parking, benches, and street trees. A small city park–Wellhead Park–is planned directly across the street from MID RVR and will feature a firepit, seating, bench-style tables, and more.

The three-story, contemporary walkup with rooftop deck is the fourth collaboration of CKPG and architect John King of Pivot North, designed in mind for a functional, aesthetic product: maximizing natural light, enhancing view corridors from rooftop

decks and balconies, and adding sustainable attributes like car charging. Associate Broker of Sun Valley Real Estate Stuart Hoag says, “Style, character, and luxury are only a few words that come to mind when describing these new townhouses in the heart of Hailey. We are very excited to be a part of an award-winning development team that is going to deliver a great product for our community.”

Inside, the townhomes boast spacious, open-concept living areas with expansive windows that bring the outdoors in. The gourmet kitchen features waterfall slab countertops, a generous island ideal for entertaining, and ample counter space for the chef at heart. The large living and dining areas open to views of Carbonate Peak, offering a beautiful backdrop for everyday living. A built-in bar and convenient powder bathroom on the second level provide the perfect setup for hosting planned or impromptu gatherings.

Interiors are finished with a complementary blend of natural materials and earthy tones, seamlessly integrating with the building’s exterior design. The open stairway and solid hardwood floors throughout beautifully withstand an indoor/outdoor mountain lifestyle. The ground floor bedroom and bath have home office potential. The oversized private, one-car garage can charge your electric vehicle and house all your adventure and sporting gear.

The primary suite, located on the third floor, features a spacious closet and an ensuite bathroom designed for relaxation. Also on the third level is the secondary bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, a convenient laundry room, and access to the rooftop deck—a private sanctuary with endless potential for personalized lifestyles. Each deck has a water spigot for a rooftop garden, includes power and TV capabilities, and is engineered for future hot tub placement. Whether you use the space for a rooftop garden, entertaining, or simply enjoying the views, the deck offers endless possibilities.

“As the Wood River Valley continues to attract both locals and visitors, MID RVR promises to offer a sophisticated living experience for those looking to enjoy the beauty of Hailey and the surrounding mountains or to make an incredible investment that will offer desirable rental opportunities,” says April Florczyk, owner of luxury real estate group 208 Market, who is co-listing the development.

Construction is on schedule with a projected completion date on or prior to October 2025, with four of the ten units currently under contract. 

WALKING DOWN KETCHUM’S MAIN STREET

The Residences at 5th & Main

It’s hard not to notice all of the improvements that have occurred on Main Street in Ketchum this past year. We have a newly paved and wider road surface with turn lanes, paver sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping, and more. It’s also hard not to notice Ketchum’s newest mixed-use development on the corner of 5th and Main Streets, appropriately called The Residences at 5th & Main.

The Residences at 5th & Main have clearly set a new standard for luxury downtown living, combining timeless architecture with modern enhancements, high-end finishes, and details. Awardwinning builder/developer Dave Wilson of Wilson Construction, in conjunction with local architecture firm RLB, has created a design that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living spaces that celebrate and draw from a singular inspiration—the mountains surrounding this iconic town.

Four luxury condominiums sit atop two new additions to Ketchum’s retail offerings. Johnny Was, a women’s clothing and accessories store, is now open for holiday shopping, and Faherty Brands will offer men’s and women’s clothing beginning in January 2025.

“The demand for in-town living has steadily risen over the last few years, especially for new projects of this quality.”
— John Alan Sofro

On the second floor, two residences feature three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a family/flex room, covered decks, and more. The third floor features two penthouse units with four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, an enlarged family/ flex room, 14-foot vaulted ceilings, heated decks with a covered dining area, and an elevator-accessed rooftop deck providing 360-degree views of the Pioneer, Smoky, and Boulder Mountain ranges.

All units include spacious and private two-car garages with extra storage. John Sofro, managing partner of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Sun Valley Properties, the lead listing agent for the property, is effusive in saying, “The property is undoubtedly one of the most high-quality constructed and thoughtful projects on the market. Incredible craftsmanship utilizing high-end

finishes with expansive indoor and outdoor spaces directed toward the breathtaking views allows you to feel like you are part of the mountains but with all the in-town conveniences. The demand for in-town living has steadily risen over the last few years, especially for new projects of this quality. We find that more and more buyers don’t want the responsibility of maintaining a large property and are looking for a simpler way to enjoy all that Ketchum/Sun Valley has to offer.”

The model unit (202) on the second floor will be open regularly beginning December 26 and available for immediate sale as rendered. The remaining three units may be customized to fit each owner’s specific tastes, and completion dates are based on buyer design requirements. 

Sun Valley REALTORS Give celebrates a 40-year tradition in Blaine County

In 2004, Sun Valley REALTORS ® Give (SVRG) stepped up to oversee the Holiday Basket program previously coordinated by various other valley-wide community organizations. Since then, the Sun Valley REALTORS Give organization has grown into an essential nonprofit charitable foundation in the Wood River Valley, with several programs, including Holiday Baskets to assist children and families in celebrating the holidays, Veteran housing to help local Veterans sustain affordable and stable housing, scholarships for local high school students, and the Community Housing Fund to create housing opportunities for Blaine County’s essential workers.

Supporting Sun Valley REALTORS Give, the Sun Valley Board of REALTORS graciously donates to Sun Valley REALTORS Give for operating expenses. This ensures that 100 percent of the donations go directly to the programs.

“Sun Valley REALTORS Give exists to improve life in the Wood River Valley,” says Sun Valley REALTORS Give Executive Director Cathy Nikolaisons. “Our Holiday Baskets program requires a yearround effort to give baskets to hundreds of Blaine County families in need during the holidays. This year, we anticipate providing a little extra holiday cheer with over 400 baskets.”

Every Holiday Basket is curated for each family and provides warm clothing, toys, books, and toothbrushes for their children. In addition, each family member is given a $25 Atkinsons’ Market gift card to purchase all the fixings for their holiday meal, which means a family of four receives $100.

“With the generous support of local businesses, donations, volunteers, and the Sun Valley Board of Realtors, we make a difference during the holidays, when some need it most. The halls of the community campus show this love and support of our community to the recipients as trees adorned with ornaments with our donors’ names or business logos greet them” says Nikolaisons. “This event, more than any other SVRG program, is community-driven. It takes nine to ten months to bring to fruition. We get to see the full circle from planning and sign-ups to preparing the baskets to the joy of distribution to these grateful families.” She adds, “This community makes it happen, and it is amazing to see and be a part of!”

The village consists of valley dentists who donate all the toothbrushes, and toys sourced from Little River PreSchool, the Stuff the Bus event at Albertson’s in Hailey, along with help from local banks as well as donations from

local realtors and our community, ensuring warm clothing items, books, and more toys. The Holiday Basket Village even includes the 5 Bee Quilt Guild whose members hand-make over 400 potholders each year to add an even more loving and personal touche to every basket!

For 20 years, realtors have volunteered and helped move the program forward, growing it every year to provide more items and help more people. When families gather to collect their baskets, there’s rarely a dry eye—it’s always apparent that the gift is truly in the giving. In addition, several realtor volunteers have worked with the Holiday Baskets program since 2004 and come back every year to GIVE.

“Holiday Baskets is a true testament to the generosity of this community for those in need during the holidays,” says Nikolaisons. “It’s priceless as can be seen in the eyes and the heartfelt joy of the children and families receiving.” 

SUN VALLEY REALTORS® GIVE— COMMUNITY HOUSING FUND

Partner donors ensure Veteran, essential, and workforce housing

Realtors, brokers, buyers, and sellers are making an impact on the lack of workforce housing in Blaine County, one transaction at a time. With concern about the rapidly changing character of Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, Carey, and communities beyond, as well as the inability of essential employees to afford stable, secure housing, Sun Valley REALTORS Give (SVRG) created the Community Housing Fund.

With a $10,000 gift from the Sun Valley Board of Realtors and their unanimous support, plus an anonymous $25,000 donation, the SVRG created its newest program, the Community Housing Fund, in January 2024. Before launching the program, the Community Housing Fund raised over $110,000 from Founding Donors, Ambassadors of the Fund, and Friends of the Fund. These initial donors were realtors, brokerages, and local title companies who shared the vision of the Community Housing Fund.

At the closing table, the Community Housing Fund encourages realtors, brokerages, buyers, and sellers to contribute to nonprofit entities that create workforce housing or provide down payment assistance for essential workers in Blaine County. Fundraising

will continue through 2024 and beyond with the Closings with a Cause program. Closings with a Cause is a unique and sustainable approach to fundraising for workforce housing.

“The meteoric rise in housing prices has been devastating for many in our community and has created extreme housing insecurity never before witnessed in the Sun Valley area,” says Executive Director of SVRG Cathy Nikoliasons. “The realtor community wanted to be a part of the solution for this problem. Our Sun Valley Board of Realtors members are financially invested in the Community Housing Fund.”

Administration of the Community Housing Fund and the Closings with a Cause program is made possible by SVRG, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The Community Housing Fund pools donations to maximize impact on the housing problem that affects every household, organization, and employer in the community. Every gift to the Fund and Sun Valley REALTORS Give’s commitment to workforce housing is leveraged by the expertise of nonprofit workforce-housing developers and other organizations that have a demonstrated track record of success and who share the goals and vision of SVRG.

The Community Housing Fund has partnered with ARCH Community Housing Trust, Blaine County Charitable Fund, SVRG Veterans Housing Fund, and Wood River Community Housing Trust to financially advance shovel-ready new construction projects and existing housing inventory to ensure that every gift to the Community Housing Fund is properly invested and well managed.

Donors to the Community Housing Fund designate the entity or program they want their contribution to support. By the third quarter of 2024, the Fund had disbursed $73,000 to its partners.

The Community Housing Fund contributed $43,000 to Blaine County Charitable Fund (BCCF), the local nonprofit that, in partnership with SVRG, created an addition to their “Bridge the Gap” program with a Down Payment Assistance Program to benefit essential workers in Blaine County. The program provides workforce housing assistance by bridging the gap in a buyer’s down payment, buying down an interest rate to make a loan more affordable, or contributing towards closing costs.

“The very first recipients of down payment assistance perfectly fit the definition of ‘essential worker,’” says Executive Director of BCCF Mary Fauth. “The husband is in law enforcement, and the wife is a postal worker, and we are thrilled to announce they closed on their first home in July. The Community Housing Fund and Blaine County Charitable Fund recognize that these are the people who make the county tick and merit stable housing.”

ARCH Community Housing Trust’s mission is to develop safe, permanently affordable housing for persons of low to moderate income. At this time, ARCH is raising funds for the Ellsworth Inn development in Hailey with a matching grant in place. Thus, the $15,000 contribution from the Community Housing Fund to ARCH became $30,000 with the matching grant.

ARCH Executive Director Michelle Griffith states, “ARCH is honored to have been selected as a partner by Sun Valley REALTORS Give; they have demonstrated a deep commitment to our community with the Community Housing Fund. The funds awarded by the SVRG to ARCH were matched at 50% by another donor and are being used to redevelop the former Ellsworth Inn property in Hailey from a bed and

breakfast into housing for our workforce. The first resident has moved in, and six more critical workers will call the Ellsworth home in April. We also have another Ellsworth match in place, and all future funds under this new match will help us to construct 12 new homes on the same property around the redeveloped Inn. On behalf of the ARCH Board, staff, and workforce we serve, we thank SVRG for their support.”

Additionally, $15,000 was granted to the Wood River Community Housing Trust (WRCHT), whose mission is to acquire or build workforce housing for lease to the middleincome workforce. The grant was applied to WRCHT’s project, Saddle Lofts apartments, located on North River Street in Hailey. WRCHT Co-Founder and Board Member Mary Wilson says, “This grant is important to us as it helps bridge the gap from occupancy permit to lease up. We are thankful to SVRG for their help in housing the Wood River Valley workforce at the Saddle Lofts. The timing was perfect.”

The fourth partner of the Community Housing Fund is the Veterans Housing Fund, administered by SVRG. For years,

this program has provided Veterans with rent support, down payment assistance, moving expenses, rental search, adapting homes for disabilities, and major home repairs. Nikolaisons says, “All SVRG’s efforts stay local, and all donations go directly toward helping Veterans in Blaine County. For 2024, Sun Valley REALTORS Give will have helped four local Veterans, whether it is to pay rent, buy a home, or assist with spring clean-ups and home repairs.”

SVRG Chair Sheila Liermann, a retired associate broker who spearheaded the Community Housing Fund, says, “I moved to the Wood River Valley in 1980 with a pair of skis, a degree in finance, and 30 bucks I borrowed from my little brother. I’ve been able to thrive in this community because I moved here during a very different economic time, where you could work towards homeownership with grit, a bit of luck, and working multiple jobs.” She adds, “Homeownership for many is virtually impossible with our escalated real estate prices. My dream is for the Community Housing Fund and our generous associates, friends, and neighbors to acknowledge and support those hard-working people who contribute to our community on so many levels and deserve the stability and benefits of affordable workforce housing.”

The Sun Valley real estate community recognizes that Blaine County is a more prosperous, more vibrant place when people who work in the community also live in the community. 

DON’T MISS OUT ON

CHARLIE WORSHAM

CMA’s 2024 Musician of the Year returns to Sun Valley

If you missed Charlie Worsham this summer at the inaugural Baldy Blue Bird Festival at River Run Lodge, you have a second chance, and it’s worth all the effort. Fresh off his win as 2024 Country Music Award (CMA) Musician of the Year, Charlie Worsham, with his full band, will perform on Friday, December 27, and Saturday, December 28, at The Argyros in Ketchum, presented by RJK Entertainment and The Argyros Performing Arts Center.

“All I have cared about since I was 13 years old is making music with people who challenge me to do better,” says Worsham. “It’s all been manifesting. I wake up every day and play music, write songs, perform for crowds, and do everything I’ve always dreamed about. Even after this many years, going into a studio and creating something feels like a magic trick.”

Worsham has the entire Music City creative community in his corner, and that’s never been more apparent than with his latest project, Compadres, and his recent CMA Musician of the Year win. The five-cut album finds a handful of his friends and admirers putting their stamp of approval on an artist who makes high-value music with even higher-value intent.

“I grew up in Mississippi where the only thing bigger than the mosquitos are our stories,” laughs Worsham. “Storytelling inspired me to be in Nashville and collaborate with its many talented writers and musicians.”

“I grew up a bluegrass kid before I got into the more rocking side of country, but I was always a rock and roller, being a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan with my parents’ record collection as my pedigree.”

Worsham’s decade-long career has earned him unparalleled praise from NPR, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Tennessean, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Forbes, American Songwriter, and more. A versatile celebration of musicianship and camaraderie, Compadres was produced by The Cadillac Three’s frontman, Jaren Johnston, and features collaborations with Dierks Bentley, Luke Combs, Elle King, Kip Moore, and Lainey Wilson. In addition to creating his own music, the proud Mississippi native has recently contributed his talents as a vocalist and instrumentalist to projects with Eric Church, Brandy Clark, Vince Gill, Kacey Musgraves, Hailey Whitters, Marty Stuart, Carrie Underwood, and Keith Urban, among others.

“I am working on another record, and I will preview some of the new songs in Sun Valley with a band where we will crank it out Beatles format as a foursome,” he says. “For more than a decade, I have been putting out records, and now I can represent many of my projects and other work on stage—being in Vince Gill’s band, playing in Old Crow Medicine Show for a year, my side gig playing in Dierks Bentley’s band, and writing songs for other people like Kenny Chesney. He and I co-wrote a song that he put on his recent album.”

Worsham continues to tour as part of Dierks Bentley’s band and was honored with the 2023 CMA Award for Acoustic Guitar Player of the Year. Worsham is also the host of Pickers Radio on Apple Music Country, celebrating the liner note legends who create the magic behind your favorite records.

“We are excited to have Charlie Worsham with his full band back in the Valley over the holidays,” says RJK Entertainment owner Ryan Kolquist. “He won CMA Musician of the Year, and if you get a chance to see his live show, you will understand why!”

Opening for Worsham will be Sun Valley’s own Axel Diehl on Friday and The Pisten Bullys with James Tautkus on vocals and guitar, Chris Zarkos on drums, Drew Kirk on guitar and vocals, and Sean Kovich on bass and vocals on Saturday. In addition, the nonprofit beneficiary organization for both shows will be Stella’s Shelter Fund. 

Nick Brandt

The Echo of Our Voices

The portraits in this series feature Syrian refugee families posed together on boxes against the vast empty deserts in southern Jordan. Forced to relocate multiple times a year in search of destinations with adequate rainfall, the faces of the individuals express resolute fortitude and solidarity. While the photographs monumentalize a loss of place by elevating the refugees on a proverbial pedestal, Brandt demonstrates that it is the connections we forge combined with a shared sense of humanity that provides the strength to rise.

The Echo of Our Voices is the fourth chapter of The Day May Break, Nick Brandt’s ongoing series focusing on those impacted by environmental destruction and climate change. Brandt’s unique approach to climate-conscious photography celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the stabilizing effects of community in the face of adversity.

Kelly Ording’s Sungazing draws the viewer into a vivid realm where saturated colors and delicate lines capture fleeting moments that shape the passage of time. Ording’s minimalist paintings communicate through a visual language of vivid hues and rhythmic forms, inviting us to clear our minds of clutter and embrace an alternative realm beyond words. The works in this series are inspired by Ording’s practice of sungazing, a meditative ritual in which she stands outside and gazes toward the sun to absorb its radiant energy. For Ording, the slow, methodical act of painting becomes an extension of this practice, transforming each piece into a contemplative object that suspends time and grounds us in the present moment.

Reconstruction

Through ink drawing, María Ossandón recart reworks the miniature scenes or landscapes found in broken pieces of ceramics, linking universal memories with personal experiences, thus creating an almost archival representation—while still being subjective—of these landscapes.

Just as memory is witness of a singular moment or a scene, of a break in linearity, of a sound or a smell that affects perception, the body that creates or guards it is always selective; it never reaches totality. The archaeologist who dedicates himself to recovering or reuniting these fragments reconstructs new scenes, which emerge from the context that gave rise and meaning to these fragments, now floating in the spaces of science or museums.

Western POP

Broschofsky Galleries features works by gallery artists in a contemporary Western pop art genre. Andy Warhol created his Western series “Cowboys & Indians” in 1986, using bright colors and squiggly paint lines. One of his last projects before his untimely death in 1987, it has become one of his most popular portfolios. Broschofsky Galleries is showing a selection of prints from this portfolio.

Artist Billy Schenck focuses upon Western imagery in his paintings, producing flat poster-like imagery characteristic of pop art with iconic Western motifs.

His paintings exemplify “the myth of the hero and the truth of America.”

Rudi Broschofsky’s artwork lies somewhere between representation and abstraction. His approach to Western art, characterized by “street art,” makes his process unique to both genres. Working with stencils and spray paint, he adds a modern twist to an otherwise traditional subject matter.

Coping with Paradise

Through January 11, 2025

OCHI presents Coping with Paradise, a group exhibition featuring works by Brody Albert, Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Jessica Taylor Bellamy, Billy Al Bengston, Claire Colette, Devin Farrand, Kim Fisher, Langley Fox, Sam Francis, Erik Frydenborg, Hely Omar González, James Herman, David Jien, David Korty, Jake Kean Mayman, Laurie Nye, Claudia Parducci, Helen Pashgian, Nevena Prijic, Ed Ruscha, Ben Sanders, Devon Tsuno, and Brian Wills. This exhibition brings together a cohort of 24 Los Angeles-based artists whose work embodies aesthetic sensibilities informed by a certain spirit of possibility.

The exhibition borrows its title from art critic Dave Hickey’s namesake essay, which contextualizes the work of Peter Alexander by the environment within which it was made—Southern California. Hickey discusses the challenge

La Casa Del Carlos by Langley Fox oil on panel 12” x 9”

of creating art in a place as seductive as Los Angeles, describing the city as a “full world”—a place with endless stimuli, new industrial technologies, and “a dazzling, particulate atmosphere of bouncing light that declares its own presence as clearly as the objects in its embrace declare their own.” Surrounded by dreamy weather alongside the vast, sprawling, urban landscape, the artists who would later be designated as Light and Space faced the challenges of conveying something about the spectacle of Los Angeles without simulating or illustrating its parts. The resulting aesthetic elements emerged in response to an artificiality imposed by paradise as well as new mindsets born of it.

OCHI in Sun Valley, Idaho, has exhibited works by Southern California-based artists since its inception in the 1980s. Despite Sun Valley’s lack of coastline, both

locales share a mythological gateway mentality, providing access to overwhelming, undeniable encounters with the physical world. A plethora of sensory experiences and visual splendor borders on overload in both places— perfect golden- hour gradient sunsets reflecting off beaches are anchored by palm tree-lined streets in Los Angeles, just as imaginary extensions of Sun Valley’s perfect powdery slopes all appear to orient themselves toward the gallery building. Designed and built by Denis and Roberta Ochi in the early 1990s, the cavernous exhibition space surrounded by mountains would prove impossible to resist for several Light and Space artists well into their careers. OCHI presented solo exhibitions by Helen Pashgian, Peter Alexander, Ed Ruscha, and others throughout the ‘90s—each serving as an anchor point within Coping with Paradise

Lynda Lowe

This exhibition will feature a new body of work by Lynda Lowe, who navigates the intersection of the concrete and the mysterious, blending rigorous research and reflection with spontaneous creativity. Each piece balances deliberate detail with elements of chaos and improvisation, showcasing a rich tapestry of precise objects, gestural text, geometric diagrams, and expansive color fields. The result is a visually and symbolically layered offering that engages the rational mind and contemplative spirit.

Alex Rohrig

As both painter and sculptor, Alex Rohrig’s artistic practice centers around the relationship between humans and nature, a relationship that can be all things at once—chaotic and serene, playful and serious, curious and familiar. Following the practice of artistic forebears, Moore and Duchamp and later Hirst, Lucas, and Tuttle, found objects provide inspiration and often serve as a base for Rohrig’s sculptures. He responds to these found materials— bricks, whisks, bells, wire, and remnants of wood and stone through handling them, thereby letting the form of the material itself give rise to the final subject.

Pamela Detuncq

Pamela Detuncq’s tapestried taxidermy deer are immediately arresting to the eye, at once striking, colorful, and whimsical. Detuncq’s intent is not merely to create something visually compelling but also to explore the question of what becomes of our identity when we are no longer among the living.  Just as the interlaid swatches of tapestries suggest a narrative, so the stories we tell about the departed reshape and reconstruct the dead after their passing.

Past as Prelude

This major exhibition highlights a diverse selection of the gallery’s internationally acclaimed and emerging artists who will feature in upcoming 2025 group shows and solo exhibitions. We are excited to introduce new artist Joseph Rossano and will also be featuring Laura McPhee, Hung Liu, Rana Rochat, Kathy Moss, Raphaëlle Goethals, Linda Christensen, Betsy Margolius, Marcia Myers, Diane Andrews Hall, Allison Stewart, Chris Maynard, Kenna Moser, Lisa Kokin,  Jennifer Markowitz, Don & Era Farnsworth, Kiki Smith, April Gornik, Squeak Carnwath, and Jun Kaneko, among others. This showcase offers a glimpse into the future of the gallery’s programming and the evolving artistic landscape.

Lola

Around the Bend

Opening night reception

December 27, 5-7:30pm

The beauty and wonder of resin have captured the human imagination since the Stone Age. For millennia, cultures around the world have used nature’s resin and amber in jewelry and various adornments. In the 1930s, artists began a new chapter in this long history with the invention of epoxy resin, a high-gloss synthetic material to which a vast array of color pigments can be added.

In December, Hemmings Gallery will feature the resin art of Lola, a Bay Area artist whose exhibition Around the Bend promises a continuation of this great tradition. Having worked with resin for over a decade, Lola’s technique and artistic process have also evolved.

“I’m always dreaming about what’s next. What will excite and inspire? Which parts of former bodies of work will challenge new bodies of work?” she says. Compared with earlier geometric multi-layered pieces, her new exhibition will feature softer colors and more literal curves on her signature drip-edged panels.

But like fossils in amber, she understands that the true power of her material lies in its ability to capture the viewer’s thoughts and emotions.

“I begin each piece by choosing the colors that reflect a feeling but can also bring about a new emotional state. As I pour, a form begins to appear on the surface, and a dialogue starts. These forms are similar to characters in a play. They speak to me and guide me to create their shape further. Eventually, they interact and engage with each other. The challenge in creating this type of abstraction is leaving the emotion undefined. With each artwork, my intent is to create an experience. I allow the viewer to think, feel, and find their own significant meaning behind the work.”

Jane Waterous

Jane Waterous is known for her vibrant, dynamic artwork that captures the energy of human connection and joy. Her signature pieces, often featuring three-dimensional figures, celebrate community, relationships, and the exuberance of life. Waterous brings her subjects to life by painting in bright, bold colors and using thick impasto layers to create textured, sculptural forms that almost leap off the canvas. Her Gatherings series, one of her most iconic, represents figures standing together in circles, conveying unity and collective spirit.

Waterous’s work often blurs the line between painting and sculpture, making each piece an immersive experience. Her unique approach combines the playful with the profound, touching on universal themes of love, family, and shared experiences. The joyful gestures and expressions of her figures resonate with viewers, inviting them to consider their connections and memories. By focusing on inclusivity and togetherness, Waterous’s art speaks to a wide audience, making her pieces particularly appealing to collectors who value visually compelling and emotionally uplifting art. Her work continues to inspire with its boldness, texture, and ability to evoke the joy of human interaction in a distinctively tangible form.

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and winter evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!” DAILY

THE CELLAR PUB

Step inside to the cozy bar and restaurant, full of locals and visitors alike looking to connect at one of the wooden tables over dishes like Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or an Old-Fashioned Bar Burger. For the late-night crowd, The Cellar Pub offers a full bar, complete with draft beers and daily drink and shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia line the walls and bar. Head to the back room and you’ll find booths for chatting with friends as well as a full-size free shuffleboard table and a few arcade games. This pub will leave you feeling full—of good food and good times.
