EDITOR’S WELCOME

STAY IN FLOW

Ketchum’s Main Street might not be the most enjoyable destination Right now, with an explosion of roadblocks, concrete dust, rebar, and broken-up sidewalks. Even though your patience might be wearing thin and shopping in the early or late hours of the day is a bit different, we should take stock of what we love and stay in the flow.

A little creative energy may ease the pain of traveling around town. Enter BODYTRAFFIC to handle the detours. The contemporary dance company’s second Sun Valley summer residency in July will bring some relief. Don’t miss their events, performances, and residency work, as the company joins various area nonprofits to explore and promote dance and body movement.

We also have many celebrations to mark, including the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference’s 30th anniversary. Learn about the humble origins of this cherished annual community event, attracting some of the most prolific writers of our time, from politics to fiction and everything in between. Although sold out, there are still many ways to enjoy Conference presentations, from the Sun Valley Pavilion lawn to live streaming—don’t miss it.

At the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA), peruse Tina Barney’s photography exhibition, Tina Barney: Homecoming, from her days in Sun Valley, where she learned how to photograph, launching her career as one of America’s

most iconic photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, SVMoA presents Lake Street Dive as a concert in its summer series at River Run Plaza, which will be a dance party, not to be missed.

If you have heard about the Firefly™ Petunia, a plant that glows in the dark, and wondered if it is an urban myth or real, SVPN Magazine has the scoop. We spill the tea on Wood River Valley’s Keith Wood, Ph.D. and CEO of Light Bio, who invented the beautiful flowering phenomenon that is changing the gardening world.

Also, celebrating an anniversary is the Sun Valley Music Festival at 40 years, and its Music Director, Alasdair Neale, celebrating 30 years. SVPN is excited to follow a fantastic symphony season with the appearance of the most celebrated cellist of our time, Yo-Yo Ma, along with the Festival’s history, and more, starting in this issue and in August, too. For more arts, SVPN ’s July edition features two pieces on artists Sally King Benedict and Nick Brandt with openings for Gallery Walk.

In Architecture Trends, learn about Allison Paige’s new designs and catch up on everything new for your abode in July’s Style Dial. In addition, the SVPN Wellness Section has lots of great information from CENTERED on new processes for wellness and St. Luke’s on wellness for kids, along with a feature on Fit Me SV, a new studio in Sun Valley focusing on Pilates and other classes inspiring for mind, body, and spirit.

In Stanley, SVPN features Mystic Saddle Ranch, an American West story we can all respect and aspire to as you can get out on the trails to discover the Sawtooths with them. It is one of the many aspects of living in Idaho that remains as unique as ever.

Last but not least, dine out with the Sun Valley Restaurant Association’s dining guide, and explore all the Sun Valley real estate listings to find your dream home.

Be mindful, take your time, and don’t get frustrated. We live in a unique and special paradise.

Enjoy your 4th of July and the long and lovely summer days that follow.

PICKLEBALL, PLAY, AND PARTY

Men’s Second Chance Living Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser

Men’s Second Chance Living (MSCL) is not just about pickleball, it’s about serving up second chances and fostering a sense of community. This is especially true during its annual Pickleball Tournament weekend, August 1- 4, with the help of tennis legends John McEnroe, Mikael Pernfors, Vince Van Patten, and Mats Wilander. This year, MSCL has partnered with the Wood River Pickleball Alliance (WRPA) to create a weekend that will be bigger and more exciting than ever, bringing our community together in a healthy and fun way.

The tournament is not just a game, it’s a way for MSCL to make a significant impact on our community. Executive Director Sonya Wilander says, “We are thrilled about this event because there will be something for everyone. It is a great way to bring the community together while raising funds for two important nonprofits, making a real difference in the lives of those we support.”

Since 2018, MSCL has been dedicated to helping men living with addiction succeed in their recoveries and achieve

sustained sobriety by providing sober housing and proven holistic services. The focus is on the 4 R’s: Recover, Rebuild, Restore, and Re-enter. Together, they improve not only an individual’s future but also create a positive ripple effect throughout the entire community.

Thanks to the partnership with the WRPA, some of the country’s top pickleball talent will be traveling to the Wood River Valley. This is a chance to watch and a unique opportunity to learn from the best. President of the WRPA, Lee Sponaugle, explains, “We reached out to the senior pro pickleball community, and the top 16 players will participate in the event.”

The top players will give a clinic on August 1, teaching their best shots and strategies to local players. “The same players will then act as coaches for 16 amateur teams who will compete in the tournament at the Valley Club,” Sponaugle says, offering a unique chance for personal growth and improvement.

Wilander added that the Legends & Celebrity Weekend Senior Pro Invitational will also bring tennis legends John McEnroe (former #1 professional tennis player with seven grand slam singles titles), Mikael Pernfors (French Open Finalist and backto-back NCAA Singles Champion), Vince Van Patten (actor and former top 25 Professional Tennis Player), and Sun Valley’s own Mats Wilander (former #1 professional tennis player with seven grand slam singles titles). Come watch legends and pros play exhibition games, host clinics, and compete in match play for prize money.

“Pickleball has become an important part of the fabric of this community,” Sponaugle says, “And working with MSCL is a great connection and great partnership.”

Additional events will include a welcome party, a Legends dinner at a private residence with a paddle-up and exhibition by worldrenowned tennis legends, and the opportunity to bid on playing with tennis legends. More about Men’s Second Chance Living, the tournament weekend, and how to register can be found at msclhouse.org. 

A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS

Trailing of the Sheep

Festival fundraiser gathers support

On Thursday, August 29, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival will once again hold its signature fundraising event at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum. Guests will enjoy an evening of entertainment, food, drinks, and auctions to support the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s mission to gather, celebrate, present, and preserve the history and cultures of sheepherding in Idaho and the West.

The event will bring together community-minded, philanthropic guests to experience a feast of lamb and local, seasonal foods for a festive evening. This is all in support of the 28th annual Festival to be held October 2-6, 2024, in the Wood River Valley. The five-day Festival will feature cooking classes, dinners, music, storytelling, National Qualifying Sheepdog Trials, and the everpopular Big Sheep Parade with 1,500 sheep ‘trailing’ down Main Street in Ketchum.

Laura Musbach Drake, Executive Director of the Festival, describes the evening as “a cocktail party meets dinner, meets auctions, meets fun” and a newer way of celebrating

and supporting the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. The evening promises to be eclectic and lively. It will help fund the Festival’s annual Big Sheep Parade, Folklife Fair, and other free events that bring people together to fulfill its mission.

“It is our goal to always be able to keep these events free, open to the public, and accessible to anyone who would like to celebrate with us,” shares Drake.

The rising costs of producing the Festival inspired the team last year to organize an event that would create new avenues of funds through sponsorships, ticket sales, a mystery raffle, and auctions.

“We are so very grateful to all of our supporters,” says Drake. “We couldn’t do this without the support of our sponsors and all of the people donating auction items, food,

The August 29 event theme is “Starry Starry Night,” with a Vincent van Gogh slant illuminating the artistic motif while celebrating the Festival’s sheep ranching heritage. Guests will enjoy a farm-to-table feast, with lamb courtesy of the Siddoway Family’s Grand Teton Lamb family ranch in eastern Idaho. They will also enjoy artisan cocktails, mocktails, craft beer, and boutique wines from the Starry Bar.

Works from local and regional artists and other special items will be auctioned off at the event, and the Festival’s 2024 signature poster—designed by artist Neal Aspinall— will be revealed on event night.

One hundred tickets will also be sold for the night-ofonly mystery raffle, a special package that has yet to be revealed. Drake promises that “it will be an exciting joy to be the winner!” Food lovers, sheep lovers, art lovers, and those interested in supporting the Festival will all enjoy this one-of-a-kind “starry” evening alongside good company for a great cause.

EMBRACE BODYTRAFFIC Summer residency immersed with performance and engagement

A Sun Valley summer means enjoying the beautiful and inspiring landscape of the Wood River Valley, where the outdoors beckons everyone to pursue their passions, from flyfishing to stargazing and every sport in between, traveling endless trails up to peaks and down through valleys. However, a Sun Valley summer is also the anticipation and inspiration for the body, mind, and soul of groundbreaking performing arts, including the BODYTRAFFIC Sun Valley summer residency.

For its second summer in Sun Valley, BODYTRAFFIC returns with a focus on community engagement and inclusivity. With new performances at the Argyros Performing Arts Center designed to be enjoyed by all, BODYTRAFFIC celebrates its diverse community by adding some inspiring choreographers to the mix with the dancers. For its ten-day residency, with performances at The Argyros on July 13 and 14, BODYTRAFFIC will provide opportunities for movement workshops and community outreach with Valley nonprofits, including Higher Ground, the Hunger Coalition, and YMCA in partnership with Far + Wise SummerBridge Camp.

“We have significantly expanded our community involvement and outreach to better serve the Valley with our programming.” says BODYTRAFFIC President Gillian Wynn. “To ensure that we were truly meeting the needs of the community, we reached out to Sally Gillespie at the Spur Community Foundation to identify the organizations and individuals who would benefit most from BODYTRAFFIC’s movement and wellness initiatives.”

I Forgot the Start by

In a commendable effort to connect and elevate the Sun Valley community, BODYTRAFFIC is introducing movement to students from across the Blaine County School District. As part of the many intentions and residency objectives, BODYTRAFFIC will be exploring student and adult classes and more. BODYTRAFFIC’s packed schedule at its Sun Valley summer home will have everyone begging for more and, at the very least, becoming inspired to dance or move.

“BODYTRAFFIC’s commitment to do more than perform in Sun Valley is a wonderful part of the company’s mission,” says Spur Executive Director Sally Gillespie. “Its partnership with local nonprofits to offer creative movement workshops for a variety of participants is impressive and will have lasting effects.”

BODYTRAFFIC performs Bioqueao

As part of the overarching groundswell to address mental wellness, BODYTRAFFIC is committed to this vital aspect of day-to-day living. This is also a cornerstone of BODYTRAFFIC’s ethos, which Founder and Artistic Director Tina Finkelman Berkett places as a high priority.

“Since the pandemic, I’ve refocused the company and reprioritized our values,” says Berkett. “Each of the dancer’s mental wellness is of paramount importance to me. There’s so much that I want our Sun Valley community to know about BODYTRAFFIC, but most of all, I want them to know the extraordinary artists we support and our commitment to sharing their gifts with the world both on and off stage.”

The impact of BODYTRAFFIC’s residency debut in 2023 was unique and unexpected. One participant from Higher Ground, who attended a workshop, had never danced before. This student was non-verbal, but later received a device which provided the capacity to communicate with language. The student’s first words were “practice dance.”

“For someone with such limited access to language to choose ‘practice dance’ as their first words is something we would never have imagined. It serves to validate our mission,” says Wynn. “If we can touch just one life and bring joy to someone who has never experienced such freedom and agency over their body, it’s all worth it.”

For its 2024 Sun Valley summer, BODYTRAFFIC will present a new repertory that has been extremely well received throughout the year, including the Sun Valley premiere of I Forgot the Start by acclaimed choreographer Matthew Neenan. It is an inspired piece created while in residency at The Argyros last summer, and Neenan will present this heartbreaking, sorrowful, hopeful, and beautiful work about love and loss.

Additional repertory includes Bloquea’o by BODYTRAFFIC’s Joan Rodriguez set to Pedro Osuna’s original music which blends traditional Cuban rhythms with live percussion accompaniment by Grammy-winning artist, Ricky Matute. Also on the program is Nederland Dans Theatre alumnus Fernando Hernando Magadan’s The Act of Becoming, a mesmerizing homage to Maurice Ravel’s iconic Boléro

“If we can touch just one life and bring joy to someone who has never experienced such freedom and agency over their body, it’s all worth it.”

BODYTRAFFIC dancers sharing their love of dance with Higher Ground students.

“It’s an original take on a very well-known piece of music but with a new mix that is high-brow artsy,” says Wynn.“It is not to be missed, as Sun Valley is sophisticated and will appreciate this level of performance.”

Accompanying BODYTRAFFIC as this summer’s choreographer-in-residence is Trey McIntyre, the celebrated former Artistic Director of the Trey McIntyre Project. His ballet-inspired work set to Etta James music will also be included in the program.

“I have admired Trey and revered his work for decades, and I’ve had the honor of calling him my dear friend for ten years,” says Berkett. “I think we’re both at the top of our games right now, and so there seems to be a particular magic about the current work he’s creating at BODYTRAFFIC.”

With all of the 2023 dancers returning, the company is excited to be in Sun Valley for its residency and performance. However, support is always needed, and a serious part of the business of a dance company like BODYTRAFFIC is to keep it operating at such a high level with the ability to produce compelling and inspiring work. “Performing arts are ephemeral,” says Wynn. “Ticket prices must be accessible. However, to create a transcendent experience, we must rely on support.” 

BODYTRAFFIC is a nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible. To support BODYTRAFFIC’s outreach and educational programming, free to the Wood River Valley community, and additional year-round programming, visit bodytraffic.com.

“There’s so much that I want our Sun Valley community to know about BODYTRAFFIC, but most of all, I want them to know the extraordinary artists we support and our commitment to sharing their gifts with the world both on and off stage.”

I Forgot the Start by Matthew Neenan

THE GLOW IS REAL

Firefly™ Petunia illuminates with organic light

If you have been hearing and wondering about the glow-in-the-dark plants that seem to be popping up in conversations around town, this is no urban myth. These amazing plants are real, and Sun Valley residents don’t have to go far to get their very own.

For nearly four decades, scientists have strived to create bioluminescent plants. The breakthrough finally came when Keith Wood, Ph.D., scientist and CEO of Ketchum-based Light Bio, successfully developed a garden petunia with flowers that glow in the dark. This remarkable achievement has opened exciting new possibilities for biotech products in everyday life. Imagine homes, gardens, and parks illuminated with biological light.

A pioneer in bioluminescence, Keith embarked on a journey that would bridge science and art by inserting a firefly gene into a tobacco plant. Though it could only glow dimly for a short period, this initial success paved the way for further exploration, eventually leading to the creation of the Firefly™ Petunia. This early achievement was in the 1980s at the University of California, San Diego, yet it was not until this year that Light Bio could introduce the Firefly™ Petunia to the public.

photos by Erin Roberts @Lasso Photo Co.

The scientists at Light Bio discovered that the natural glow in luminous mushrooms harmonized perfectly with the central metabolic processes in plants, producing a sustained living light. Petunias were selected as the inaugural product due to their popularity as ornamental plants. Known for their ease of cultivation and prolific flowering, petunias are ideal for this innovative enhancement.

The Firefly™ Petunia gets its name from its glowing buds, which resemble fireflies in the dark. While appearing as a typical white petunia in daylight, it transforms at night with an enchanting soft glow similar to moonlight. The compact Firefly™ Petunia produces abundant blooms that are up to 100 times brighter than previously possible. With attentive nurturing, the plant rewards with even greater luminosity.

“Science can be more than merely pragmatic—it can bring beauty and enjoyment into our lives,” says Keith. “That’s the essence of Light Bio—enriching our experience of the world. By merging natural splendor with scientific innovation, we create moments of wonder and delight.”

As if it’s asking us to take a moment to be tranquil, the Firefly™ Petunia’s white flowers become center stage as our

eyes adjust to its glowing brilliance. Transitioning from white to green light with firefly-like pinpoints throughout the buds and petals, its organic light is soothing and mesmerizing. Perhaps even more satisfying than the delightful glow of this plant, the Firefly™ Petunia provides a sense of serenity.

“The bioluminescence flows from the living energy within the plant,” Keith adds. “It unveils the inner life force, creating an otherworldly, almost spiritual experience reminiscent of the bioluminescent flora in Avatar.”

When Keith and Monika Wood chose to live in the Wood River Valley, they were motivated by the same passion that inspired the creation of Light Bio—the joy of embracing the aesthetic pleasures of life. Drawn to the natural environment and the welcoming community, they felt an immediate and profound connection to their new home. Surrounded by like-minded individuals who value sustainability and artistic expression, the Woods felt that Sun Valley was the perfect place for Light Bio. Here, they could blend their enthusiasm for nature and science, creating a harmonious space where their vision could flourish.

“The

Firefly™ Petunia is living energy, and it is captivating, bringing joy through light where science and art find common ground.”

“You make a connection to the Firefly™ Petunia,” says Monika. “You have a special relationship with it. You care for this petunia differently. It’s a bond created by this combination of science and art, which are both creative.”

Keith acknowledges Monika’s role in their venture. “I bring the technology, but Monika brings the color. She has an intuitive sense of what we’re doing and where it’s going. Our shipping boxes say, ‘the plant you will love most,’ which is Monika’s tagline.”

Thanks to the diverse talents and natural interactions within this community, the Woods many opportunities that have come their way, particularly their collaboration with Jennifer Moss, owner of Moss Greenhouses in Jerome, Idaho. Representing four generations of family business, Moss Greenhouses has been invaluable in the local production and supply of the Firefly™ Petunia. Their ability to grow these plants on a large-scale commercial level within an hour’s drive of Sun Valley, including for summer weddings Jennifer has been planning for months, has been a significant advantage.

“The Firefly™ Petunia has revolutionized the garden industry,” says Jennifer. “Nothing new ever happens in my business, but this petunia leads the charge for an industry that needed

something fresh and exciting. I have had several sales for the Firefly™ Petunia, where people have lined up around the garden center. I have had to limit the number of plants per person so everyone can enjoy them. It’s amazing to be part of this literally at the ground level.”

Looking ahead, Light Bio aims to develop more efficient and brighter luminescence, especially for use in the ambient light of urban areas. “We have only just begun,” says Keith. “We will create brighter plants with more colors, and more varieties.” Light Bio is presently exploring new partnerships for expanding the business. 

The Firefly™ Petunia can be purchased at Moss Garden Center in Ketchum and Moss Greenhouses in Jerome while supplies last. The plants will grow 8 to 10 inches in size with abundant white flowers and can be planted in pots, baskets, or gardens. The Firefly™ Petunia is also available at $29 online and for shipment at Light Bio’s website, www.light.bio.

A GRAND LITERARY SUMMER CAMP

Sun Valley Writers’ Conference celebrates 30 years of cherishing authors and readers

One summer day in 1995, close to 100 writers and readers gathered under a little white tent on the lawn of the Sun Valley Community School to hear from some of the country’s greatest minds. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Halberstam dazzled the small crowd with his insights on writing about history and politics. Filmmaker Freida Lee Mock discussed her upcoming project on Maya Lin, which would win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature the following year.

Writers Gretel Ehrlich and Mark Salzman shared their work, the latter ending his talk by playing the cello. Sun Valley-based author Ridley Pearson humored all, and Ethan Canin of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop shared his latest story collection.

“It was astonishing,” says Mary Anne Dolan, a longtime board member for the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference (SVWC). “It was a galvanizing evening—fun and celebratory, but also a serious and sophisticated discussion on the role of literature in the world.”

The following day, smaller breakout sessions were spread around the school’s campus, and attendees sat everywhere, from the kindergarten room’s tiny stools to the nowfamiliar tent.

“My earliest memory of being at SVWC was working with Bruce Willis and Richard Dreyfuss, both of whom agreed to do readings for the children in the audience,” says SVWC Creative Director James Tooley, who volunteered at that first Conference under the direction of his mother Reva Tooley, the Conference’s founder and longtime executive director.

“I believe Willis read Nancy Drew and Dreyfuss from James and the Giant Peach,” he says. “It was so memorable to see them bring those characters to life. We thought it would be an event for our youngest attendees, but once word got out that they would be reading from the stage, it was standingroom-only. I think the parents may have enjoyed themselves even more than the kids did.”

Reva also put together a panel about choices made by the media, featuring newspaper editors, literary critics, and the presidents of NBC News and ABC Entertainment. The Sun Valley Writers’ Conference was born. And that first year’s speakers set a tone that would endure: a literary summer camp in the mountains of Idaho that celebrated authors and connected them with readers and one another.

“Everyone was into the spirit of it and intellectually uplifted and emotionally connected. It was quite astonishing,” says Dolan.

The idea to bring great writers and thinkers to Sun Valley first emerged around a meal with friends—a conversation that grew to include founding members Reva and Bill Tooley, and friends like Gordon Russell, Anne Taylor Fleming, Van Gordon Sauter and Kathleen Brown, and Jon and Leslie Maksik.

All involved brought an array of experience: from journalism to book writing to politics. And, they had connections to some of the finest writers in the country who were shaping American literature.

The group knew that they could entice first-class writers to the middle of Idaho for talks and panels, as well as family dinners and outdoor activities. And they knew that writers could be honored through such a gracious environment. But, says Dolan, “the key thing was the joy of it all. We didn’t think of it as ambitious, we thought of it as pure celebration. And that’s exactly what we created. We did it together.”

Many of that first year’s writers quickly became regulars— practically like family members of the emerging literary conference. The following year, the founders were introduced to novelist John Burnham Schwartz, poet W.S. Merwin, naturalist Peter Matthiessen, and writer Carol Shields.

“Before we knew it, there they all were, standing on our little stage in 1996,” says Dolan. Writers kept coming back and bringing others into the fold. They loved the idea of what this literary festival was doing that didn’t seem to exist anywhere else. From the very first year, writers spent evenings together over dinner and attended each other’s talks during the day. They also brought their families and enjoyed all that Sun Valley had to offer, from Baldy hikes to guided fly fishing and art gallery tours.

“It was all so intimately connected to the geography and the beauty of Sun Valley,” Dolan says. “That made it a place where these writers wanted to be with one another. It carried a force of its own.”

By its third year, the SVWC had grown to 30 writers and 600 attendees, necessitating a move to the Sun Valley Resort’s lawn. “The big tent” remained the Conference’s home until the 2008 unveiling of the Sun Valley Pavilion. Even with the larger venue, the Conference has maintained a special chemistry: authors returning year after year, devoted attendees, and a gathering just small enough to maintain that distinct summer camp feel.

“The key thing was the joy of it all… pure celebration.”
—Mary Anne Dolan

Since those early years, the medley of speakers has ranged from poet laureates, humorists, architects, and sopranos to the Improvised Shakespeare Company and the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. The 2024 SVWC features returning friends, including retired Justice Stephen Breyer, essayist Anne Lamott, mystery writer Dennis Lehane, and novelist Tommy Orange.

First-timers this year include Judy Blume, Kristin Hannah, Jonathan Eig, Ayana Mathis, and Ruth Reichl. Also joining are two New Voices Fellows, for a program inaugurated in 2022 that highlights new and daring literary talents. As part of the fellowship, novelists Kaveh Akbar and Vinson Cunningham will discuss their acclaimed debuts, Martyr! and Great Expectations

The tradition of welcoming aspiring writers also continues through the Writing Fellows Program, inviting students from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, WriteGirl LA, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and Boise State University’s Creative Writing MFA Program.

“Our program this year is so stunning,” says Dolan. “It is truly one of our best ever. To be able to say that 30 years later feels so wonderful.”

While Dolan looks forward to the entire weekend, she’s most excited about the 2024 Writer in the World Prize, which she has the honor of presenting to Margaret Atwood at the July event. “She is the epitome of a writer in the world,” Dolan says.

The prize recognizes a writer whose life’s work embodies a rare combination of literary talent and moral imagination, helping us to better understand the world and our place in it. Atwood is the celebrated author of more than 50 books, including The Handmaid’s Tale and The Blind Assassin.

“It was a tiny seed of an idea 30 years ago,” says Dolan. “A literary award that would really reach out to the world of writers. It’s part of that expansive desire to give back, to thank writers and celebrate them.”

In celebration of its 30th year, the SVWC has many special events planned, including welcoming back Typewriter Rodeo with their bespoke poetry creations and an Art & Words exhibition. While passes are sold out, the entire community can participate through free lawn seating, a free Community Speakers Series at The Community Library, and a special anniversary Live Watch Party at the Argyros Performing Arts Center, where exclusive content will be simulcast from the Pavilion to the big screen indoors.

A SUMMER OF MUSIC

For its 40th, SVMF celebrates 30 years with Alasdair Neale

The Sun Valley Music Festival is the largest privately funded free-admission classical music festival in the U.S. thanks in large part to the artistry, vision, and commitment of the Festival’s Music Director Alasdair Neale. In his 30-year tenure he has shared the stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artists. This summer, the Music Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary and will bring the most acclaimed classical artist of our time, Yo-Yo Ma, to perform Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto for the Gala Concert on Monday, August 5.

“Much like the whole world, since I was a child, I have admired Yo-Yo Ma, and it is a dream come true to perform with him, especially playing the greatest cello concerto, Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor. It’s one of the greatest pieces of music in any format,” says Neale.

From its tiny beginnings with a few musicians on a small stage in Elkhorn with people passing the hat for support, the Festival has seen incredible growth and expansion over its 40 years, from that first location, to a large tent at the Sun Valley Resort, to its home in the Sun Valley Pavilion.

“Thirty years ago, I inherited a chamber orchestra, which grew to a full-size symphony orchestra before we left the tent,” says Neale, who adds that growing the symphony was

part of a seven-year plan. “We achieved it to the credit of the Sun Valley Music Festival board and the Sun Valley community. However, the quickest overnight change was moving into the Sun Valley Pavilion, which became another league in every sense.”

Over the years, the Festival has attracted audiences of over 10,000 people, a long list of world-renowned artists, and a dedicated group of talented musicians who have rarely missed a summer season. Several of the latter have raised families in Sun Valley and added to a new

generation of musicians. “Many people ask me how they can create a music festival like ours in their hometowns. It has only happened here because of the Sun Valley community,” says Neale.

He adds, “We have all been loyal to each other. We all realize it’s a wonderful time that we are given to be in Sun Valley, and we frequently refer to it as our happy place. The Sun Valley Music Festival engenders an incredible spirit of music-making. People constantly play their hearts out for each other and the audience.”

This summer, Neale is particularly excited to share one aspect of the anniversary’s celebration: two world premieres commissioned by the Festival. They are a cello concerto by the Pulitzer Prize finalist and multi-GRAMMYnominated composer Andy Akiho, performed by former Kronos Quartet cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, and a season-opening fanfare by Timothy Higgins, principal trombone of the San Francisco Symphony.

Stephanie Childress, the Festival’s Associate Conductor, will lead several performances, including Mozart’s

Symphony No. 36 (“Linz”), Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, and Rossini’s William Tell overture. Major orchestral repertoire includes Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, Saint-Saёns’s Organ Symphony, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Grieg’s Piano Concerto, Brahms’s Violin Concerto, Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, and Ravel’s Boléro

In terms of guest artists, the Festival welcomes the acclaimed Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos, a frequent fixture with major orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony. Kavakos makes his Sun Valley debut performing Brahms’s Violin Concerto, a celebration of the soloist’s technique and musicianship.

Sir Stephen Hough, a MacArthur Fellow and one of the most distinctive artists of his generation, also makes his Sun Valley debut, performing one of the most popular and beloved works of all time, Grieg’s Piano Concerto.

Hough will also perform chamber music with Festival musicians, including Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 and his own Sonatina Nostalgica

Pianist Garrick Ohlsson, the only American to have won first prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition, will perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and an all-Chopin solo recital. Soprano Meechot Marrero returns to sing with the Festival Chamber Orchestra on opening night, and she will also sing Schubert’s The Shepherd on the Rock in a chamber concert.

Additional programs feature Astor Piazzola’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Gabriela Ortiz’s Antrópolis, Jessie Montgomery’s effervescent Strum, and Quinn Mason’s

A Joyous Trilogy. For Pops Night, the Festival will screen Raiders of the Lost Ark with the orchestra playing the acclaimed John Williams score under the direction of conductor Vinay Parameswaran.

All concerts are free of charge. Seating is available inside the Sun Valley Pavilion and on the lawn, which features a stateof-the-art big screen and sound system. 

STRENGTHENING THE WORLD THROUGH MUSIC

Yo-Yo Ma performs for the Sun Valley Music Festival 40th anniversary gala

Yo-Yo Ma’s talent is an incredible gift to humanity. As the most celebrated living cellist, Yo-Yo Ma’s dedication to his art, beliefs, and society is something to be celebrated on its own, and then there’s his music. For one unforgettable evening, YoYo Ma will join Sun Valley Music Festival Director Alasdair Neale and the Festival Orchestra for the Festival’s Gala concert to celebrate its 40th summer season. The performance will be Ma’s Sun Valley debut, where he will perform Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor.

Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is a testament to his belief in the power of culture to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello, bringing communities together to explore culture’s role in society, or engaging unexpected musical forms, he strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity.

Most recently, Ma began Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate how nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Our Common Nature follows the Bach Project, a 36-community, six-continent tour of J. S. Bach’s cello suites paired with local cultural programming. Both endeavors

reflect Ma’s lifelong commitment to stretching the boundaries of genre and tradition to understand how music helps us to imagine and build a stronger society.

Ma is an advocate for a future guided by humanity, trust, and understanding. Among his many roles, he is a United Nations Messenger of Peace, the first artist ever appointed to the World Economic Forum’s board of trustees, a member of the board of Nia Tero, the U.S.-based nonprofit working in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and movements worldwide, and the founder of the global music collective Silkroad.

His discography of more than 120 albums (including 19 Grammy Award winners) ranges from iconic renditions of the Western classical canon to recordings that defy categorization, such as “Hush” with Bobby McFerrin and the “Goat Rodeo Sessions” with Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile. Ma’s recent releases include “Six Evolutions,” his third recording of Bach’s cello suites, and “Songs of Comfort and Hope,” created and recorded with pianist Kathryn Stott in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His latest album, “Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 4 and Op. 97 ‘Archduke,’” is the third in a new series of Beethoven recordings with pianist Emanuel Ax and violinist Leonidas Kavakos.

Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four. Then, he moved with his family to New York City, where he continued his cello studies at the Juilliard School before pursuing a liberal arts education at Harvard. He has received numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010), Kennedy Center Honors (2011), the Polar Music Prize (2012), and the Birgit Nilsson Prize (2022). He has performed for nine American presidents, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration. 

MYSTIC SADDLE RANCH

Livin’ the dream

In the hills around Idaho City in the mid-2000s, two high school sweethearts— Mathew Cain and Rebekah Alseth—rode horses, hunted, and fished together, and contemplated their future, their love for each other, for horses, and the outdoors. It wasn’t until Mathew fortuitously met the owner of Stanley’s Mystic Saddle Ranch, Jeff Bitton, over in Challis that he learned he could actually ride horses and hunt for a living. He signed on to work for the family-owned outfitting company in 2009. Rebekah was hired to guide through her college years as well. Along the way, Jeff fostered the couple’s passion for the outdoors, encouraging them to

pursue a life of guiding, hunting, fishing, and outfitting. It was a good investment. Mat would get certified as a farrier, Rebekah would earn her bachelor’s degree, the two would manage the company, get married, and finally, Jeff would offer to sell to them in 2016. They accepted. It was a decade in which dreams really came true.

Jeff’s father, Max Bitton, had started the guided horseback company in 1969, which operates the popular trail rides out of Redfish Lake Corrals. It became an established outfitter, operating on a special use permit in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Sawtooth Wilderness. Jeff bought the company in 1980 and continued to grow the company into a household name in the Sawtooth Valley until selling to the Cains. Today, Mathew and Rebekah continue a family-owned heritage, knowing that when

they purchased the business, they were acquiring more than a way to make a living; they were ensuring a lifestyle they were passionate about and could be proud of.

Currently, there are only three guided horseback permits within the Sawtooth Wilderness, largely due to protecting the area’s high-use and sensitive ecosystem. “To secure a permit, you have to be a designated agent for an outfitter, take an outfitter’s test, and be approved by the Forest Service,” says Rebekah. “We are very fortunate to have had that relationship with the Bittons and feel very strongly about the huge responsibility and privilege.”

Mystic Saddle Ranch trail rides range from one-hour loop rides to half-day and full-day rides into the Sawtooths to high mountain lake destinations up to six miles one way. Any

choice provides unique and epic views of the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountain Ranges, grandeur. The most popular and most scenic ride out of the Redfish Lake Corrals is the 1.5-hour loop, which meanders through the timber and opens to breathtaking views of the Sawtooths and a scenic overlook of both Big and Little Redfish Lakes. More challenging rides lead to Alice Lake, Sawtooth Lake, and the Bench Lakes. Depending on your skill and adventure level, MSR offers custom rides that provide an equal amount of time riding and relaxing at a lake, with time to fish, hike, and explore before the ride back to the corrals.

Their guided wilderness pack trips are completely tailored to each group and depend on the destination, the primary focus, and interests. Whether it’s a fully guided pack trip, fly fishing-focused, hiking with pack stock, or hunting, MSR

guides handle all the work while you get to enjoy the rugged beauty of the Sawtooth Mountain Range. They are licensed to provide incidental fishing on pack trips, and the guides will clean and dress your catch so you can enjoy it for dinner. High alpine lake catches can include rainbow, cutthroat, brook, and even cutbow trout. The Cains have also worked hard to reestablish seasonal guided hunts once they saw the elk herds begin to recover through predator management over the wolf population. Says Rebekah, “In a lucky turn of events, we were able to buy back the same hunting area on the East Fork of the Salmon River, which Jeff had sold off because of the elk reduction.”

MSR maintains a very high standard of customer service with professional, courteous, and safety-conscious guides they completely trust. Says Rebekah, “The job is a lot of fun. We can train those with less experience at the Redfish corrals until they become comfortable. The more seasoned return guides do the all-day and overnight trips.” Mathew and Rebekah also purchased a winter location in Arizona from the Bittons, so they spend their winters there with the horses, doing guided trail rides. “This allows us to keep our guides working year-round, which is hard for many outfitters to do,” she says.

The Bittons raised their family while building Mystic Saddle Ranch, and the Cains continue that same objective. Mathew and Rebekah have a three-year-old son, Colter Blaze, with whom they are excited to share their passions and their love for horses, people, and the outdoors. “You see ebbs and flows in the pack trip industry,” says Rebekah. “As small business owners starting a family, I appreciate that we can scale back individually as guides ourselves when we need to because what we are doing is important. We take it summer by summer.” 

Whether floating down Silver Creek in pursuit of an elusive monster brown trout, snowshoeing a tranquil trail at Galena Lodge, soaking in the sounds of a concert at the Sun Valley Pavilion, or enjoying a family walk at the Draper Preserve, these moments are brought to life by the generosity of those who care about our community. A deep and interconnected ecosystem of nonprofits supports the Valley—from landmark places like the Campion Ice House, The Community Library, or the Argyros Performing Arts Center to essential services that keep us healthy, safe, enriched, and connected. Generosity is at the heart of it all.

It’s easy to take this for granted. One could easily believe that each organization has everything they need to do what they do, or that only a few nonprofits are relevant to one’s personal enjoyment of life in the Valley. The truth

PHOTOS
Clockwise from top: Silver Creek; Bow Bridge at the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Preserve;ARCH Community Housing Trust; The Hunger Coalition’s Bloom Community Garden

is more complex than that. Whether you receive food from The Hunger Coalition or grab a bag for dog waste at trailheads courtesy of the Environmental Resource Center, you benefit from the generosity of others—people who have stepped up with their time, talent, or resources to ensure that our community thrives.

Spur Community Foundation is raising awareness that the future of the Valley depends on everyone embracing this spirit of generosity. If people care for, invest in, and rally around community needs and opportunities, the Valley’s true character—its DNA—will remain intact, regardless of what changes on the surface.

Sally Gillespie, Executive Director of Spur Community Foundation, explains the objective this way: “We want anyone who thinks, ‘what I love about Sun Valley would exist without me’ to realize that ‘what I love depends on people, including me.’”

Starting this summer, Spur Community Foundation is launching a multi-year initiative to celebrate the community’s generosity, inspire people to give back by celebrating what we have accomplished together, and instill the ‘all hands in’ mindset that leads us to a bright future.

A campaign under the banner “It’s in Our Nature” highlight stories exemplifying the nonprofit sector’s important role in the community’s vitality, economy, and daily life. Individual nonprofits will be able to plug into the campaign to emphasize their own stories. Beginning in the fall, a series of educational events will bring awareness to topics affecting our community and the collaborative efforts to address them. A website will serve as a hub of information and resources to help people discover ways to get involved. One feature will be a “job board” for volunteering, making it easy for people to find where their time and skills are needed. People can also sign up to be notified when opportunities that fit their interests arise.

Everyone, from longtime locals to newcomers, will have the chance to see the nonprofit sector through new eyes—as a collective force responsible for much of what makes the Wood River Valley such a wonderful place to live and visit.

Giving locally is an investment in the quality of life we all enjoy and preserves our community’s character. No matter your passions, resources, or availability, there are countless ways to make a difference and witness the impact

of your generosity. In today’s world, where change is not only inevitable but happening at a dizzying pace, staying true to what’s in our nature has the power to ensure that what we love about our community endures.

Spur Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire effective philanthropy in the Wood River Valley by helping people give purposefully and helping local nonprofits achieve maximum impact. 

Giving back is first nature in the Wood River Valley, as abundant as the wildflowers in spring and as deep as the snow on an epic powder day. We’re all hands in to help local nonprofits carry out their missions, whether it’s keeping people fed, clearing a trail, or welcoming new community members. It’s just what we do. Rooted in a shared love for the valley and the people who call it home.

UBS Wealth Management enters its fifth decade of serving Sun Valley BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

In 1980, Ketchum had a population of 2,200—a boom from 1,500 at the beginning of the previous decade, and half the size a decade before. New faces were arriving to the area, along with the latest snow making capabilities and updated lifts on Bald Mountain that were making the winter destination more famous than ever.

Sun Valley was represented at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid by local skiers Peter Patterson and Christin Cooper. Louie’s Restaurant was one of the go-to dining spots, and the Bald Mountain Hot Springs pool on Main Street welcomed visitors and locals alike.

The town was evolving from its early pioneer character to the bustling Ketchum we recognize today.

PaineWebber also set down roots that year at a new building erected by the Campion family by opening a branch office on

East Avenue. UPS was next door in a little brown 1970s-era building, and the two neighbors soon decided to swap locations..

The branch office at the corner of East Ave. and Second Street also made space for local artists and entrepreneurs, like photographer David Stoecklin who had his first office in their basement.

UBS has grown within the community, while dealing with stock market volatility, financial crises, and a pandemic, and continues to serve the financial needs of those within it.

UBS headquartered in Switzerland and founded in 1862, is a 160-year-old company that offers wealth management, investment banking, asset management, and banking services for families, foundations, and institutions.

Today, the UBS footprint spreads across 51 countries on six continents.

Kristin Hovencamp, Jenni Riley, and Noah Levine in the newly renovated UBS boardroom.

The Sun Valley’s office, bolstered by colleagues in Park City, Scottsdale, and Los Angeles, is lead by UBS Financial Advisor Noah Levine, CEPA® who has worked in wealth management for 25 years. Mr. Levine and his family moved to the area in 2020 from Park City, Utah, where he began Mogul Wealth Management at UBS, a six-person wealth management team, in 2009.

Walking into the UBS offices, you’ll also meet Financial Advisor Kristin Hovencamp, CPWA®. who began working within UBS’s asset management arm in New York City in 2005. Kristin and her family have spent decades in Sun Valley and she eventually made her home here in 2019. She rejoined UBS in 2023, adding her knowledge in asset management and alternative investments to the team.

Rounding out the team is Idaho native Jenni Riley, FPQP®, whose 25 years of business acumen maintains operations for the office and clients. “She’s the glue that holds everything together,” says Hovencamp, who worked alongside Riley, before they both joined UBS.

Noah, Kristin, and Jenni are also dedicated to giving back to the community. Mr. Levine, is involved with a family foundation that supports the welfare of children, seniors, and the arts. Ms. Hovencamp, teaches financial literacy classes to residents of Men’s Second Chance Living, and works on the board’s of Mountain Humane animal shelter and the Sun Valley Culinary Institute. And Ms. Riley, is part of the board of directors for the Wood River Women’s Foundation.

This past year the Ketchum office was renovated—a refresh for the trio that can provide everything from generational wealth planning and preparedness, to trust services and estate planning strategies, business succession planning, philanthropic giving solutions, and bespoke investment planning advice.

Despite the makeover, though, Ms. Hovencamp says UBS itself hasn’t changed. “I believe it’s only gotten better. And we’re seeking to build for the future here.”

The little brown building’s rich history is intertwined with the insights, experiences, and relationships built over the past four decades inside its walls. “We’ve gone through many chapters,” says Levine. “And UBS has been here, in this location, the entire time.”

Now in its fifth decade serving residents in the Wood River Valley, the UBS Sun Valley branch office offers clients a boutique firm experience that leverages the capabilities and resources of a leading global wealth manager for the Sun Vally area.

“We are so lucky to be part of this community,” says Levine, “It is a privilege to be in a position to benefit the community that we love.”

Ketchum has grown and changed, with new buildings on the rise on every block. The UBS Sun Valley branch has evolved alongside its town, all within the historic little brown building it has always called home. 

TRANSFORMING A 1970 MOUNTAIN HOME

A tale of modernization and character infusion

Nestled among the slopes of Sun Valley’s Elkhorn Village stood a relic of the past: a 1970s mountain home awaiting a contemporary transformation. This endeavor was not just a renovation but a meticulous blend of innovation, creativity, and a dash of vintage charm. Spearheaded by Kavanagh Construction with the help of SHIFT design in collaboration with Allison Paige Interior Design, this project epitomized the power of teamwork and vision.

The initial structure, a product of its time, favored seclusion over openness. The challenge laid before the design team was to reimagine this space so it “lives the way people live today,” says Allison Connolly, founder and lead designer at Allison Paige Interior Design. Thus began a journey of creative engineering and careful curation. Every decision was guided by a commitment to preserving character while breathing new life into what will persist as a timeless masterpiece.

Chris Page of Kavanagh Construction, who served as the project manager along with Erik Tiles of SHIFT design, orchestrated the structural modifications necessary to open the floorplan and maximize natural light. The duo navigated structural challenges with finesse, bringing the ultimate concept to life.

Allison Paige Interior Design is known for special attention to artisanal lighting, unique tile, exquisite fabrics, and wall coverings. One of the defining features of this project was the emphasis on sourcing unique pieces and incorporating them into the design narrative. The client remained budget-conscious while entrusting the team with ample creative freedom. This allowed room for creativity and risks to be taken and for each member to excel in their respective roles, culminating in a project that surpassed expectations.

“Truly, the home is for the client to enjoy, not for me. So, although I’d love to infuse my personal style, the process begins with listening to what the client is going for. Unlike recent others, this project veered from the Mountain Modern style that is so on-trend. This interior is filled with character in the form of antiques, reclaimed textiles, and slabs handmade

and tiles imported from Italy and beyond. I gravitate toward clean and enduring lines and natural surfaces,” says Allison. “Every element was carefully chosen to tell a story.” The result? An updated space that exudes warmth, elegance, and a distinct personality in every nook and cranny.

“The most rewarding part of the project is the synergy of the design team. I also just love seeing it all come together at the very end. It’s almost hard to convey the feeling in the space, which is one of coziness and luxury. A casual mood that invites you in. A place to enjoy where nothing is too precious,” Allison adds. Through meticulous planning, thoughtful execution, and a generous dose of ingenuity, this team transformed the space into a beacon of modern elegance amidst the rugged beauty of the mountains. 

WHEN LIGHTING IS ALSO ART

“We knew we had to find a showstopper for this dining fixture,” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “One that was custom with an amazing finish and form. But it couldn’t overshadow the most important thing in the room—the view. Situated at the top of the White Clouds neighborhood, this home has a singular vista of the Pioneers to the southeast. This brass and ceramic chandelier was custom-made on the East Coast and is an unassuming champion in this space. Quiet luxury is always important. Let the view do the talking.”

IMPROVING WELLBEING FOR COMMUNIT Y AND YOUTH

Initiatives address mental health in the Wood River Valley

The Wood River Valley community is special. We take care of each other and have a proud history of coming together to tackle important challenges, including mental health.

Individuals and families can contribute to our community’s mental health and well-being by spending time with friends, family, and neighbors. We also know from local surveys that many people lack connections to others and are missing out on an overall sense of belonging. Each one of us can work to change that.

Our schools, organizations, places of worship, and local businesses play a critical role in setting the tone and building a culture of mental well-being. Fostering conversation, providing resources, and creating opportunities for connection can happen wherever people gather.

This article highlights two critical initiatives addressing mental health and well-being in our community: the Communities for Youth Blaine County Initiative and the Mental Well-Being Initiative. Both are bringing various stakeholders together to listen, to learn, and to make a difference in the lives of our family, friends, and neighbors. Everyone can have a role and impact—it will take a village. (Or a Valley, in this case!)

BLAINE COUNTY’S MENTAL WELL-BEING INITIATIVE

Blaine County’s Mental Well-Being Initiative seeks to grow an integrated mental health and well-being ecosystem that improves the lives of all people in our community.

“By leveraging and amplifying diverse community efforts, the Initiative supports a shared, integrated, and comprehensive vision for the future,” explains St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Chief Development Officer Megan Tanous. “The Initiative seeks to drive lasting, systemic solutions that help meet some of life’s basic needs, prevent a crisis before it happens, and provide connections and mental health care to all who need it.” The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) has committed funding to support this large-scale community collaboration.

With clarity on the problems that need to be solved, the community began to map out solutions. Through this listening process, the Mental Well-Being Initiative identified five goals to guide community collaboration.

 Create a collaborative effort that supports and incentivizes local businesses and organizations to offer many welcoming community-connecting environments and activities throughout the county, focusing on teens.

 Build a robust, comprehensive community training and education program focused on building a common language and understanding of resiliency, self-regulation, healthy communication, and crisis de-escalation.

 Increase behavioral health access and capacity for individuals and families by assessing the mental health continuum of care in Blaine County, addressing system inadequacies, and building out the behavioral health workforce of the future.

 Create a 24-hour mobile crisis response system and crisis stabilization setting(s) or system.

 Build the infrastructure required to support ongoing collaboration across organizations, entities, and businesses to prioritize our community’s mental health as foundational to our overall health.

The Mental Well-Being Initiative will spend the summer of 2024 working with stakeholders to map a path forward based on the direction the community mentioned above sets.

The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has funded the work of the Mental Well-Being Initiative and committed three years of additional funding to ensure expert coordination of community collaboration. The Spur Community Foundation will continue to play a leadership role in the process, along with the partnership of St. Luke’s and many other nonprofits, the Blaine County School District, law enforcement, faith leaders, and other community leaders.

COMMUNITIES FOR YOUTH BLAINE COUNTY INITIATIVE

In a partnership with Blaine County School District, St. Luke’s Community Health and Engagement team has contracted with Communities for Youth at Boise State University to engage community partners, parents, and members in a Youth Behavioral Health Initiative to assess well-being and to focus on steps to help with prevention around youth mental health in Blaine County.

The initiative draws inspiration from the Icelandic Prevention Model, an evidence-based approach successfully implemented in over 43 countries. This model emphasizes upstream prevention strategies that address the root causes of mental health challenges and substance abuse among youth.

“We recognize the desire among community members to contribute to our youth’s well-being actively. While the statistics around mental health can be daunting, it’s important to remember that there are existing programs and support systems available in our communities,” says Dr. Megan Smith, founding director for Communities for Youth and an Associate Professor for the Boise State University School of Public and Population Health. “By collaborating with community members, gathering diverse perspectives, and adopting an upstream prevention approach, we can collectively develop an effective action plan that can be continuously evaluated and refined.”

The initiative kicked off last fall with the first Youth WellBeing Survey of middle and high school students. With the consent of parents and guardians, a significant portion of the student body participated in the survey, providing valuable insights into their well-being and needs.

Superintendent Jim Foudy notes, “While 81% of respondents feel that Blaine County is a great place to live, one concerning finding is that the students do not feel that they have adult role models other than their parents to turn to. I believe this is something our community can address and provide solutions to. This underscores the importance of fostering stronger connections and providing additional support systems for our young people.”

Over the winter and spring of this school year, community members were invited to attend community meetings, where survey results were shared, and participants engaged in meaningful discussions about how to best support our youth.

“We invite everyone who cares about the health and well-being of our community to stay engaged and look for opportunities to contribute your time, talent, and resources as we move forward.”

Data showed that most young people are not having significant struggles with their mental health but that many are struggling with moderate-to-severe symptoms of depression. It also showed that for those struggling with mental health, the major factors involved were lack of sleep and lack of meaningful social connections. Blaine County partners and community members decided to focus on youth social connection and sleep as their primary areas of focus.

Follow-up youth focus groups conducted in Blaine County shed more light on youth experiences in these areas. Findings from the youth focus groups included:

 Several factors, including homework and pressure to do activities, inhibit the amount of time young people are able to sleep.

 Youth struggle with feeling lonely and isolated, but people saying ‘hi,’ checking in and showing genuine concern for young people can be great ways to start building social connections.

 Youth often feel like they do not have spaces or activities that are a good fit for individuals in their age group.

Sarah Seppa, Director of Community Health & Engagement for SLWR’s Center for Community Health, discusses the following steps, “Together, the Blaine County initiative is keeping the attention on building the best possible

community for kids. Numerous steps and efforts are underway to help address these issues. For example, teachers changed how homework assignments were posted, making them due at 9pm instead of midnight, to help students who may procrastinate get their homework done and get to bed. As we return to school, we will launch a campaign around sleep, including some fun and engaging challenges around improving sleep.”

A ROLE FOR EVERYONE MOVING FORWARD

The Communities for Youth Blaine County Initiative and the Blaine County Mental Well-Being Initiative are working collaboratively to address mental health needs for everyone in the community, including prevention and all levels of care. Meaningful and lasting success will require engagement and investment from many community partners and leaders, with continued support from all county residents.

Tanous offers, “We invite everyone who cares about the health and well-being of our community to stay engaged and look for opportunities to contribute your time, talent, and resources as we move forward.” 

THE POWER OF HEALTHY MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION

Dr. Molly Brown shares the importance of cellular energy

The mitochondria of the cells are the powerhouses of cellular energy. These busy little players in the orchestra of our bodies take center stage in producing the energy necessary for various cellular functions. They transport nutrients, oxygen, and energy into the cells and remove waste products from the cells. Our mitochondria maintain cellular health, regulate metabolism, and modulate inflammatory and immune responses. Healthy mitochondrial function is the key to a high-energy life and a robust immune response.

A healthy immune response keeps us 100% healthy and sicknessfree, even when surrounded by illness. Believe it or not, with the right tools, we are, as humans, naturally healthy. It is our normal state. This is why, besides our core modalities, the cellular regeneration machines at CENTERED play a crucial role in our quest for optimal and total health. Below are my favorite therapies for enhancing mitochondrial function, which help our clients stay grounded, balanced, high in energy, able to recover quickly, and feel their best every day.

Mitochondria are responsible for producing ATP, the energy currency of our cells. ATP is essential for energy-intensive processes, including immune responses and pathogen elimination. Mitochondria are involved in signaling pathways that activate immune cells and modulate inflammatory

reactions. Therefore, when using the combination of our modalities and methods, we see a 30-50% improved recovery time from injury, surgery, pain, and illness across the board.

Dysfunctional mitochondria can reduce ATP production, impair immune function, and make the body more susceptible to infections and chronic illness. Overprescription of antibiotics, NSAIDS, and other medications can also suppress the immune system in the long term and harm healthy cellular function. Our approach is to provide the cells with energy and the body with the tools to have a natural, wholesome, complete, and strengthened immune and recovery response. This, of course, is built on a foundation of a high quality, nutrientdense, well-mineralized dietary intake replete with vitamins, minerals, and well-sourced quality ingredients grown in mineral-rich soil.

DR. MOLLY BROWN’S FAVORITE THERAPIES AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

PEMF: PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY

PEMF uses magnetic fields to stimulate cellular processes, increase cellular energy, correct cellular polarity, increase bone density, charge up every cell in the body, speed up healing 5-10 times, decrease inflammation, support healthy lymph drainage, and strengthen every meridian in the body. PEMF also provides a grounding effect and can refresh and recharge after airplane travel. Best uses include bone healing, autoimmune support (to increase cellular energy), soft tissue injury or surgery recovery, immune support, and lymph drainage, especially for sinus/lungrelated illnesses. Paired with our Nano Vi device, which repairs damaged proteins and DNA, this therapy provides a quick charge for sports recovery or even a long workday.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave therapy is fantastic for stress fractures, particularly in the leg and metatarsals, fractures, mild arthritis, post-surgery healing, pain, plantar fasciitis, hamstring tears, shoulder injuries or pain, and more. It involves the application of acoustic waves to stimulate cellular activity, activate the regenerative capacity of the tissue, flush out inflammation from the cell membrane,

Healthy mitochondrial function is the key to a high-energy life and a robust immune response.

break down scar tissue, act like a natural Advil, increase stem cell activity, revascularize tissue, dissolve ganglion cysts, and more. It is particularly effective when combined with the AMIT method and PEMF therapy. This triplethreat combination brings the magic.

INFRARED THERAPY

Infrared therapy utilizes near and far infrared light to stimulate cellular activity, improve cellular energy, enhance thyroid function, boost mood and general energy, and decrease pain. It is a gentle, simple treatment with significant benefits and is used with almost all other treatments we offer.

LIVE O2/VASPER

When heading into a busy day needing to be clear, focused, and mentally charged, the Live O2/Vasper combo is my go-to early-morning 20-minute workout. Live O2 therapy involves breathing saturated/desaturated oxygen while exercising (intermittent hypoxia). This delivers oxygen deep into the cells, flushing out inflammation

while vascularizing the entire system. This therapy has drastically improved circulation, resolving conditions such as Raynauds, asthma, and blood pressure, restored circulation, increased mental clarity, energy, testosterone, and HGH, and decreased cortisol when paired with the Vasper. A healthy testosterone level, at an all-time low globally, gives a severe edge in life: magnetism, charisma, and positivity.

These therapies are used with precision and embedded in our core modalities of AMIT and QNRT, bringing miracles in health and healing. As one of my dear mentors, Dr. Craig Buhler, says, “If you are not seeing miracles daily, you are doing something wrong.” In a healthcare system often defeated by chronic conditions, pain, and decreased personal vitality and immunity, we are passionate about bringing natural and innovative technologies and modalities together to fully resolve chronic, complicated, or tricky conditions and witnessing miracles daily. 

INTRODUCING

FIT ME SV

Transforming body and mind through Pilates

Sun Valley, Idaho, has long maintained its reputation as a beautiful home to beautiful people. I could tell you it’s something in the Big Wood water that keeps the old, young, and the able active, but we’re not here to gatekeep. With the introduction of Ketchum’s latest Pilates studio, Fit Me SV, a new beacon of fitness has emerged, catering to a high-octane clientele. Offering not only a workout but also a transformative experience, Fit Me SV is addressing the mind, body, and soul. The Valley’s sculpting secret is out, and you’ll want to get in on it.

Meet Kathryn Caminiti, the visionary behind Fit Me SV, a Pilates studio quickly becoming a cornerstone of the local wellness community. From her journey as a passionate Pilates devotee to the inception of her studio, Kat shares her story and her mission for empowering others through mindfulness and movement.

Born in Newport Beach, California, and raised in Ketchum, Kat considers this valley home. “I have always been in love with Pilates,” Kat shares, reminiscing about her first encounter with the practice when she was just 13 years old.

“I want clients to feel at home when they come to class. This is a space to connect with yourself and others.”
— Kathryn Caminiti

A dancer since the age of three, she found in Pilates a symbiotic partner to her ballet training. Pilates would enhance her dance prowess and play a pivotal role in her physical well-being. After discovering she had scoliosis in high school, Kat turned to Pilates as a form of treatment and rehabilitation.

“Pilates helped correct my scoliosis by strengthening my weaker left side,” she explains. Kat also grappled with lordosis, a condition that affects the curvature of the spine, making it difficult to activate fundamental muscles. Yet, through Pilates, she found strength and a renewed sense of confidence. “Having a strong core is so empowering to me, especially since it didn’t come naturally at first. Pilates positively affects my performance in other activities, and I’ve never felt more fit in my life. I love helping people to feel good and be more confident in their bodies,” says Kat. This profound experience ignited a passion within her to share the benefits of Pilates with others.

Post-college, Kat spent seven years working corporate jobs, which left her uninspired and with little free time. When the pandemic forced people indoors, virtual classes and quick at-home workouts became her refuge, leading Kat back to the mat. “I started dabbling with all the different kinds of Pilates out there.” She later decided to return to Ketchum at the beginning of 2022, only to find herself disappointed by the lack of group Pilates studios in town. This realization sparked a dream, which Kat would spend the next year turning into a reality by opening a Pilates studio of her own.

In 2023, Kat got certified in Mat Pilates from Balanced Body, and later in the Lagree Method (a contemporary iteration of Pilates) in Newport Beach. By March 2024, Fit Me SV opened its doors, offering a fresh space for fitness enthusiasts of all levels. From full-body mat classes to 30-minute targeted muscle group workshops, Kat’s studio consciously tailors their schedule to complement that of a busy parent, those working nine to five, or both. Fit Me SV has quickly become a hub for those seeking not just a workout, but also a community.

“Fit Me SV is a mat Pilates studio, but it’s also a fitness sanctuary,” Kat proudly describes the studio’s airy décor, including light hardwood floors, full wall-length mirrors, comfy furniture, and lots of real plants. “I want clients to feel at home when they come to class. This is a space to connect with yourself and others. I met one of my best friends through a workout class, and I encourage others to meet a friend or invite each other to do things outside of the studio.” Kat envisions her “fit community,” as she describes it, as mutual positivity and empowerment to achieve goals.

Kat’s vision for Fit Me SV extends beyond the studio walls —with plans to introduce the Lagree method to town. She also strives to expand on private group Pilates experiences for events. “Fitness is not one-size-fits-all. It’s about balance,” she emphasizes. “Besides a killer workout, our goal is to teach the importance of pelvic mobility, engaging your core, and focusing on form. Form is everything!”

As Kat reflects on her decision to follow her dream of opening the studio, she’s filled with excitement and gratitude. “I came to a point where I realized, you have one life, and it’s so short. If you fail, you fail, but you’ll always have an itch that will bother you if you never try.” Fit Me SV is a testament to hard work paying off and warranting results. Kat’s fitness revelations, genuine passion, and expertise have solidified her commitment to sharing the power of Pilates, one rep at a time. 

Lake Street Dive performs at River Run

Prepare for a soulful blend of jazz, pop, and R&B in an unforgettable summer evening at the base of Baldy with the ever-popular and dynamic Lake Street Dive. With their music resonating in the hearts of millions, an acclaimed discography boasting seven celebrated studio LPs, two EPs, and a collection of much-loved singles, Lake Street Dive is a dynamic and exhilarating force in popular music.

With vocalist Rachael Price, bassist and background vocalist Bridget Kearney, drummer and background vocalist Mike Calabrese, keyboardist and vocalist Akie Bermiss, and guitarist and background vocalist James Cornelison, Lake Street Dive provides a “cross-pollination of soul, folk, jazz, classic pop, and more,” and “the five-piece’s all-embracing ethos has also made them a beloved live band known for building a potent connection among every crowd.”

Lake Street Dive’s latest release, Good Together, also its 2024 tour name, is the result of examining the world and the many factors that appear and seem to be driving us all apart—unchecked technological growth, culturally imposed isolation, the cult of relentless self-optimization, and more. Born from a mindset called “joyful rebellion,” Good Together arrives as a gloriously defiant body of work primed to inspire unbridled dancing and ecstatic singing-along.

“There’s a lot to be angry about in the world right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to

constantly live in that anger—you need something else to keep you going,” says Calabrese. “Joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way, this album is our way of saying, ‘Take your joy very seriously.’”

Lake Street Dive fully embodies the effusive sense of togetherness and mutual care embraced throughout Good Together. “At this point, our tastes in music differ more than they ever have, but we’re still able to bring all

those influences together with a real love and respect for the diversity within the band,” says Price. “I think the main thing that’s kept us going over the years is that very strong foundation of friendship—everyone has a voice, everyone gets heard, and we’re all really careful about looking out for each other’s happiness.”

Don’t miss the unique opportunity to be part of Lake Street Dive’s 2024 “Good Together Tour” as they grace iconic venues across the U.S., Canada, and, of course, Ketchum,

Idaho. This concert promises to be a memorable evening of music, a one-of-a-kind experience that should not be missed as part of the Sun Valley Museum of Art 2024 Summer Concert Series. 

“I want painting and sculpture to become complimentary in this exhibit while each piece maintains individuality in and of itself.”

—Sally King Benedict

The art of Sally King Benedict AS SEEN THROUGH MAXIMALIST EYES

Sally King Benedict has created her way through life. Benedict, the daughter of a gallerist, has been surrounded by art since she was a child. Each painting is an expression and creation of Benedict’s experience. Benedict’s work reflects not only herself but the space she inhabits. In work that is maximalist in nature, with vibrant colors and loose brushstrokes, Benedict creates a reflection of her environment. Without limiting herself to the twodimensional confines of painting, Benedict works with a diverse range of material. Benedict has used her work to inhabit and experience the richness of nature and the bonds of community. Her latest body of work, inspired by the Wood River Valley, serves as a testament to her connection

with nature and community. Through art, Benedict explores the richness of the natural world and the bonds that tie individuals together, capturing the essence of the environment she calls home.

While Benedict’s canvases come from a deeply personal space, they appeal to our search for vibrant aesthetics. Through the lens of maximalism, these richly expressive works evoke a sense of being human. Maximalism as an art movement is a reaction to the austerity of minimalism. Often with an excess of color, Benedict inhabits this ethos; her work is part of who she is and how she experiences the world. Navigating the newness of the West and

motherhood through her artistic practice, Benedict’s work bucks the confines of her canvases. With graffiti-like bursts of color and dynamic compositions, Benedict taps into humanity’s inherent desire for self-expression and the celebration of diversity.

Teetering between exhilarating abstraction and loose representation, Benedict is able to captivate her audience. Rooted in understanding composition and color theory, each mixed media work belies a sense of humor. It seems as if she is winking at us, her viewers. There is a sense of who Benedict is and how she sees and inhabits the world, all while warmly inviting us in. Her canvases are vibrant landscapes where the joys of excess are celebrated, whether it is the flowing waters of a river or the vibrant chaos of a skate park. Through her art, Benedict invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where color knows no bounds and free expression reigns.

Hemmings Gallery will feature Benedict’s latest exhibition TAP INTO this July. Benedict writes, “I have enjoyed

experimenting with different mediums for this exhibit in an effort to free the mind from any artistic constraints. Naturally with young children, I have found myself having inner childlike moments sparking from early on when I first learned to build sculpture with clay and paper maché. I have tapped into these memories and fondness in a way that has carried over to the painting and mark-making process on my 2D surfaces. I want painting and sculpture to become complimentary in this exhibit while each piece maintains individuality in and of itself.” 

A meditation on a changing world

SINK / RI SE

Serafina at Table Fiji, 2023
“SINK—so

do we resign ourselves to our fate? RISE— or do we make the effort and do our damnedest to minimize the harm? Humanity’s choice. Our choice.”

SE

Nick Brandt’s SINK / RISE proves that contemporary fine art photography has the power to subvert the constant inundation of images we face in a contemporary world. In the third chapter of The Day May Break (Nick Brandt’s photographic analysis of the devastating human consequences of climate change), SINK / RISE is filled with underwater portraits from off the coast of the Fiji Islands.

While photography is an art filled with contradictions, I am constantly reminded of Susan Sontag’s words. I was young when I first read On Photography, yet her words have influenced my understanding of the world and how the image influences. Looking at Brandt’s SINK / RISE , I cannot help but think of her words. While photographs have become even more instantaneous and accessible than ever, it is in Brandt’s quiet, composed work that I see the power of composition and vision. In his most powerful work to date, Brandt embodies a humanistic ethos that subverts the consistency of imagery we see daily in the palms of our hands.

Below: Joel and Petero on Seesaw, Fiji, 2023

Opposite: Ben and his father Viti, Fiji, 2023

When we look at a photograph, we are struck by the immediacy of a moment and all that has built up to it. Fine art photography has been tasked with the impossible—how does one reckon with a stream of images? Nick Brandt successfully draws on and tugs on our emotional drive to understand our surroundings. For the past three years, he has tirelessly worked to compose images embodying the environmental devastation we have created. While the first two chapters of The Day May Break focused on those already impacted by climate change, the Fijians in SINK / RISE face the coming tide of environmental loss.

Through Brandt’s camera, we see those who need to be proven as existing. Brandt holds up a mirror to his viewer and asks us to consider our place in the ecological ravaging that continues to cause waters to rise. These images are as much about the future of our planet as the past. They are fleeting and fixed, informative and imaginative, hopeful and resigned. They are filled with what Sontag described in

her seminal analysis of photography as an art. It is an art with momentary decisions that fix our reality. Though written in the 1970s, Sontag’s words drive our understanding of an imagebased world and the work of Brandt.

Brandt’s photographs are not simply instantaneous documentations of his subjects but the product of careful and deliberate staging. Premeditated by necessity, yet instantaneous meditations, shot 2-4m below the surface at a location dubbed the Boneyard, the protagonists of Brandt’s visual essay give strength, resolve, and understanding to the human-made crisis they face. His subjects exude an eerie calm as if suspended in time. Yet in many images, especially those of the female models, we are given a calm anger and resolve. There is a hope that we will be the better ancestors who must make a change.

A woman sits at a table across from an empty chair, gazing contemplatively into the unknown, a familiar composition. Serafina at Table is one of the strongest images in a series of strong images. Poetically posed, Serafina is a figure who embodies not only the devastation of what she sees but also the resolve and hope of common humanity. In her face I see my own anger and resolve to be better, it is at once personal and removed. This simple composition is a wholly reimagined rendering of a seemingly intimate scene. There is a captivating tension between the tranquility of the sea, the resigned and resolute face and a sense of the surging environmental crisis. This is an image that transcends the composed reality of the shot. It shows not only Brandt’s understanding of theatrical

composition but also the understanding that his work can impact our vision of the future.

Joel and Petero on Seesaw is an embodiment of the series’ title. It is not only literal but figurative. Two men are stuck in the liminal space between sinking into apathy and rising to action. Anchored and buoyed by the pull of gravity and the need to increase, this is an image of hope and resignation. Surrounded by hues of blue, the stillness and quiet belies the strange yet earthly backdrop. There is hope as light filters down to the ocean floor.

In the introduction to the photography book, Zoe Lescaze writes, “Despite the surreal, semi-theatrical settings in which these portraits are staged, Brandt’s images are direct, uncluttered, and free from distractions. This combination of fantasy and restraint is a signature of Brandt’s work rarely seen elsewhere.” This is evident in every portrait of the series. This July, Gilman Contemporary will exhibit ten large-scale prints from SINK / RISE . Each work featured in the exhibit conveys the delicate balance between the pull of resignation and the power of hope and change. On July 11, at The Community Library, Nick Brandt will speak about his experiences as a photographer and this series.

Following the discussion at The Community Library, Gilman Contemporary will host a viewing of the exhibition with Nick Brandt, which is open to all. 

Tina Barney: Homecoming

June 21–September 7

Tina Barney: Homecoming features photographs Barney made between 1976 and 1980, when the internationally renowned artist was living in Ketchum, Idaho, and taking photography classes at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now Sun Valley Museum of Art). Made with a Pentax 35mm camera, the images document the daily life and activities of the people closest to Barney and are representative of a key stage in her trajectory as an artist, before she began

working with a large, format camera to make carefully composed and directed photographs. In contrast, the images in this exhibition, which were made in Sun Valley, Rhode Island, and New York, are more spontaneous. But like her later photographs, these early works illuminate the subtle interactions and psychological tensions that occur among family and friends even in moments of leisure—at weddings and on squash courts, at the beach, waterpark, or a ski race.

Rob Davis: Records

June 21–September 7

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1970, the artist Rob Davis has spent the past six years making paintings that mine his childhood memories— specifically those from ages five to eight, a time of “magical thinking” among children. His hyperrealist images depict empty kitchen tables, living rooms, and porches, as well as piles of records and plants in macrame holders. While Davis’s paintings emerge from his own lived experience, they possess a universal resonance for all viewers familiar with the 1970s. His interiors and (object) portraits alike evoke the era’s aesthetics and technology with vivid accuracy but without nostalgia.

SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART

IN THE BEGINNING

Reflections with Iconic American Photographer Tina Barney

When Tina Barney arrived in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1973, she enrolled in a photography class at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, now Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA), that put her on a path to becoming one of the most iconic photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Capturing moments in time that draw one’s attention to subtle emotion and a contrast of daily life interactions, her images embody a state of existence, a style of class, and an eye for a glance at life that begs a viewer to acknowledge a time, a place, and a moment.

“These are some of the first photos I took when I came to Sun Valley and took a photography class at the Sun Valley Arts Center. I was using a 35mm small handheld camera and didn’t know what I was doing,” Barney shares.

Barney was about to embark on a 40-year career as an acclaimed American photographer. She would create images based on her observations that offer perspective on generational family interaction and existence, often including subjects in familiar or known domestic settings and rituals.

During COVID, in her Rhode Island home, Barney spent time sifting through her 35mm negatives from 1976 through 1980. That project led to her 2023 exhibition at Kasmin in New York, The Beginning, and a book published by Radius of the same name. The photographs in SVMoA’s Homecoming represent a selection of the images in The Beginning, many of which were never exhibited before the show at Kasmin.

Tina Barney, Ski Race, 1976, gelatin silver print, ©Tina Barney, courtesy the artist and Kasmin, New York.

“I collected photography before I moved to Sun Valley in the 1970s when most people were looking at fine art photography,” she says. “I knew about the great photographers, and they were my idols. When I took the first class at the Sun Valley Arts Center, I never considered myself an artist, but I did know the quality and what makes good photography. I had no illusions of grandeur, but I had wonderful teachers there, and they were my best friends. Sun Valley was my college because I did not attend college. I was married at 21 and had children at 23. It is where it all began.”

Some photos are from spring vacations and Rhode Island, where she would go in the summer. Barney shares that these images in Homecoming were taken at essential points in her career.

“In the photograph, Amy, Phil and Brian, it was the first time I directed someone for the sake of the narrative, which was a big deal,” says Barney. “Homecoming is about me coming back and having an exhibition on work from The Beginning It takes forever for me to explain my images. They’re very

complex. It’s about technology and the steps that I have taken over the last 30 years.”

Tina Barney was born in 1945 in New York. Her meticulous tableaux chronicle the complexity of interpersonal relationships. These lush color prints, which have been exhibited and collected by major institutions around the world, are a testament to the global recognition of her work.

“The people who came into the Sun Valley Center for the Arts photo department were perhaps the most important photographers in the world,” says Barney. “Sometimes, you were sitting in a little room with four people in it. Not many people in the world knew it was there. It was a miracle that I happened to be there. We had ceramics, printmaking, and photography all in a little complex, and there was an unbelievable cross-section of mediums. It was an amazing experience and so small where you knew everybody. In the summers, incredible people came to Sun

Valley. It was fascinating, and the Center’s founder, Glenn Janss, was very important to me.”

Barney is working on an exhibition in Paris at The Jeu de Paume, which is set to open in September, and she continues to do fashion shoots, which includes a recent campaign for Christian Dior.

“This was the biggest thing I have ever done,” she says. “Now, I am working on a project with a friend of mine, author Judith Freeman, whom I have known since the 1970s in Sun Valley. She and I went to India in 1991, and we lived there and have been trying to do a book ever since.”

She adds, “Homecoming is the gratitude I have for Sun Valley, not only for what it taught me but also for the friends I have from there. I love skiing as much as photography. Skiing was my life, and I would balance the two and take care of my children. It was my home for ten years. No words describe it, and no one would believe it.” 

Kneeland Gallery

Andrew Bolam, Lori McNee, and Dave LaMure

Artists’ Reception Friday, July 5, 5-7:30pm

This will be E nglish-born Andrew Bolam’s first exhibition at the gallery. His acrylic paintings follow two separate yet linked directions—building abstract marks into recognizable imagery and using silhouettes of animals to elicit an emotional connection to his paintings. His love of the American West is evident in his images of deer, elk, and bears roaming through aspen trees and his Native American subjects.

Symbiosis by Andrew Bolam Acrylic on canvas 48” x 62”

Local artist Lori McNee is talented in several disciplines, including landscape and her everpopular still-life subject matter. Her work is opulent in color and texture, and her imagery is as ornamented by detail as it is rich in symbolism. Lori is an exhibiting member of Oil Painters of America and Plein Air Painters of Idaho. Besides painting, she shares valuable tips on fine art, art business, and social media on her blog, FineArtTips.com. Lori has ranked as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women on Twitter and was named a TwitterPowerhouse by The Huffington Post

Sculpture by Magic Valley artist Dave LaMure will complete this exhibition. LaMure’s inspiration is tethered by his love of the outdoors. His bold forms capture the rhythm of life in the various animals he portrays in his large-scale vessels and wildlife bronzes. His monumental sculpture depicting native Cutthroat trout can be viewed in the gallery courtyard.

Nick Brandt SINK / RISE

Gilman Contemporary presents the U.S. exhibition debut of photographer Nick Brandt’s SINK / RISE , the third chapter of the ongoing series “The Day May Break.” The continuing series portrays those impacted by environmental destruction due to climate change. Previous chapters of the series depicted people and animals affected by environmental degradation in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Bolivia. Each poignant image begs the questions: Can we be good ancestors? Can we show that we care about the humans and animals and trees that we will never live to see? (read more on page 184).

Seonna Hong

Freytag’s Pyramid

New to the gallery, Seonna Hong is a painter from Southern California whose work explores the nuances of human experience through storytelling. In each painting, Hong allows herself to wander creatively through textured memoryscapes that reveal her background in illustration, teaching, and animation.

In the upcoming exhibition Freytag’s Pyramid , Hong draws on novelist Gustav Freytag’s pyramidic dramatic structure to visually chronicle the ebb and flow of life and memory. Her figures, typically women, drive the narrative across landscapes varying

from rocky and rugged to hazily rendered liquid-like dreamscapes. These figures act as guide and subject, faceless yet illustrative. They traverse each canvas, driving the narrative forward. Each canvas reveals moments of chaos and calm, reality and fiction, illustration and abstraction, and tension and resolution.

Storytelling

Billy Schenck has been painting in his reductivist paint-by-numbers style since the 1960s. The first formal art show Schenck saw as an 18-year-old was Warhol’s Campbell Soup collection. Subsequently, after working for Warhol the following year, Schenck notes Warhol’s Pop Art style as an early influence in his work. In Schenck’s artistic version of a mythic “New West,” he satirizes the surrounding universal truth and lies.

Broschofsky Galleries is pleased to show a new body of Schenck’s work alongside a selection of pop art images from Andy Warhol’s “Cowboys and Indians” portfolio (1986). Exploring the West through myths and nostalgia, the images were Warhol’s last major project before he died in 1987. The works represent an important milestone in both Warhol’s late career and the history of contemporary Western art. This show will compare these two recognized pioneers of Pop Art and their differing styles and interpretations of the American West.

Also showing is a new selection of large-scale photographs by famed artist David Yarrow. For over two decades, British photographer David Yarrow has created evocative images of some of the world’s most iconic personalities, sporting moments, and endangered wildlife. In his ever-evolving series, Storytelling, Yarrow takes his work to the next level through tales of adventure and misadventure, often utilizing iconic backdrops, recognizable characters, and trained animals. The artist’s low-editioned works are available in two sizes: standard and large or more aptly described as big and huge. Whether poignant, dramatic, or provocative, the images are always epic.

Broschofsky Galleries also displays works from other gallery artists, including Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Ewoud de Groot, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Theodore Villa, and more.

Rives Granade & Vincent Pocsik

Silent Spines

OCHI is pleased to present Silent Spines, a twoperson exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artists Rives Granade and Vincent Pocsik. This is Granade’s fifth presentation with the gallery and Pocsik’s first. Silent Spines will be on view at OCHI, located at 119 Lewis Street in Ketchum, through July 6, 2024.

Silent Spines pairs Rives Granade’s abstract paintings and Vincent Pocsik’s anthropomorphic lamp sculptures to complement one another as they push conventional boundaries in their respective mediums—Granade in an exploration of consciousness and Pocsik via his innovative approach to form. Both artists take an imaginative approach to their work to present a corporeal language of unusual curves, shapes, and textures.

Rives Granade’s resolute expression of the interior world pushes back against modernist isolation; his paintings exist as repositories for thoughts, reminders, schedules, and snippets of biography and bibliography. Much like the ancient paintings in the Lascaux Caves and the graffiti etched into the Temple of Poseidon, Granade employs a variety of techniques to document time, layering, echoing, and affirming his presence in the world. Embracing visions,

thoughts, yearnings, recollections, and reveries—a lifelong commitment to communication and mystification manifests in Granade’s fluid portrayals of myriad inner identities. His expressive canvases pay homage to the essence of drawing as they transform fragments from his daily experiences into images teeming with figures, forms, and symbols. Intricacies from his life and within the studio give rise to moments of simultaneous clarity and obscurity—found images and ideas become rhythmic reflections on existential themes.

Vincent Pocsik creates unconventional anthropomorphic sculptures that double as freestanding lamps. Each sculpture depicts a solitary figure featuring elongated legs, a twisted torso, and a lampshade as its head. Exquisitely crafted and intriguingly surreal, these illuminated sculptures embody contemplative beings. Simultaneously serene and introspective, Pocsik converges the natural and the fantastical to offer a poised exploration of the human form and evoke a sense of ease. Pocsik’s creative process gracefully balances machine work and hand-carving—

effectively intertwining new technology with analog methods. Trained as an architect, Pocsik initiates his process by sketching his envisioned piece from various angles using pencil and paper. He then translates these sketches into digital form using various animation software. The wooden elements of the sculpture are then roughly cut using a CNC router and assembled using glue. Finally, Pocsik meticulously hand-carves and sands the sculpture to achieve its flawless form.

Betsy Margolius

Betsy Margolius approaches the subject of flora with different impulses and considerations. In a highly saturated, free-form style, Margolius abstracts nature’s many forms and rhythms. Collecting ideas and visions from the natural world, the artist arranges her composition like a bouquet of colorful bursts and vibrating floral forms. Margolius creates her environments and invites the viewer to awaken their senses.

Gwynn Murrill

Gwynn Murrill’s life-sized bronze sculptures depict regal animals such as horses, bears, coyotes, and eagles. The artist stylizes her subjects into purified forms, emphasizing primal characteristics and transmogrifying each animal’s unique spirit. Murrill simultaneously distinguishes, yet obscures, by sculpting figures that are at once based in realism and fiercely enigmatic. Murrill expertly transforms such heavy and static material as bronze into figures stirred with subtle movement and dynamic energy. A few Murrill’s many accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Prix di Roma Fellowship, and a Purchase Award from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Pegan Brooke

Pegan Brooke is an abstract oil painter working in a minimalist style and monochromatic palette. She mixes metallic pigments with her medium, adding a rich sheen and texture to each staccato brushstroke. Brooke carefully organizes her compositions into grids, giving structure to hundreds of reflective swaths of paint. These paintings are conceived with meditative repetition, organically evoking the sense of light falling on water or snow. Pegan Brooke’s work is in public and private collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and U.S. Embassies in Sri Lanka and Bolivia.

FLY SUN

“ e majority of businesses in this valley rely on a healthy ow of visitors on a yearly basis. I, like many others, am able to raise a family here because of those visitors. Fly Sun Valley Alliance takes a very calculated approach in providing more air service to bring people here from all over the country without inundating our guest services. e increased air service options also allow many people to live here, who otherwise could not because they have to travel for work. I’m proud to partner with FSVA through the Realtors for Air program because they provide a major tool for me to have the privilege to watch my girls grow up in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

— Luc McCann, McCann-Daech-Fenton Realtors

“My idea of good living is not about eating high on the hog. Rather, to me, good living means understanding how food connects us to the earth.”
—Ruth Reichl

For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this summer include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams and garlic, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh Alaskan halibut, seared ahi salad, spicy sesame noodle bowl and fresh Willapa Bay steamer clams, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

For the late-night crowd, The Cellar Pub offers a full bar, complete with draft beers and daily drink and shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia line the walls and bar. mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital).

Your meal will be a pièce de résistance!
