EDITOR’S WELCOME

THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

SVPN Magazine sends heartfelt support to those firefighters and ground and air support fighting the Bench Lake Fire and protecting Redfish Lake Lodge in Stanley. We also hope that our community can provide and support all those who had to leave their jobs at Redfish Lake and the Clegg and Crouch families who operate Redfish Lake Lodge. We stand by you as you face this enormous challenge and begin the recovery journey.

As we wind down the summer, there’s still an incredible month of arts and culture to experience in Sun Valley to ease the mind of all those things occurring beyond our control. For August, SVPN Magazine continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sun Valley Music Festival with a section of featured artists and performances and a spotlight on Associate Conductor Stephanie Childress. This summer’s symphony should not be missed, as this season’s program is filled with world-class artists and celebrated works of music.

Adding to the performing arts, read about The Argyros Presents production of Escaped Alone in the Bailey Studio. It is the first of what will be more theater productions to come at The Argyros. In other performing arenas, one of the Valley’s favorite musicians, Lukas Nelson, returns for a show at the Sun Valley Pavilion for Labor Day weekend, which is sure to be a sellout.

Other arts for August include the Artist Studio Tour of the Wood River Valley, which SVPN is excited to feature and includes several artists to seek out while making your rounds for this annual studio tour. This year’s tour is an art collector’s dream weekend because of the talent and diversity of working artists in our Valley, who welcome all into their studios.

In SVPN ’s Wellness section, read about Dr. Molly Brown’s CENTERED and how to ride ATVs safely without ending up at St. Luke’s—advice that goes a long way. SVPN also provides a different type of wellness, featuring community organizations such as Far + Wise, which raises the Valley’s quality of life and supports future generation pursuits.

Discover the Stanley River Retreat and Cabins in Stanley and enjoy the serenity of being on the banks of the Salmon River while staring at the majestic Sawtooths from Lower Stanley. For some Sun Valley new property news, read about Sunshine townhomes in Elkhorn, which are ready for ownership. They are exceptionally built and designed.

In addition, if you are in the market for a new home or redesigning one, read about Davies Reid’s rugs, the real deal, and see SVPN ’s Style Dial for suggestions, from kitchen stowaway spaces to outdoor furnishings and more. Also, a feature on Stone Art will provide fascinating knowledge on how to feature marble and other beautiful stone in your home.

With real estate listings and a completely updated Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide, SVPN hopes to make your Sun Valley life one of the best. August is a great time to experience what so many love about living in Sun Valley.

Be safe, courteous, and mindful of others as we savor the last days of summer,

Our summer ends with the Flying Karamazov Brothers: “four self-proclaimed eccentric lunatics spicing things up with laugh-out-loud comedy, wild theatrics, arcane errata, and astonishing juggling feats,” (New York Times). We start our fall répertoire in September with returned singer, songwriter, saxophonist, guitarist, and hometown favorite, Curtis Stigers, following with Jonathan Dely, a young trumpet artist from NYC, bringing his “All-Star Band” with him to debut his musical journey. October brings Morgan James, a Juilliard-trained singer, songwriter, actress, and recording artist to the Argyros, performing her fifth album, Nobody’s Fool. 2024 SUN VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL

REFLECTIONS

Four decades of music and a 30-year tenure

It was love at first sight, recalls Sun Valley Music Festival Artistic Director Alasdair Neale. “I remember the very first time I set eyes on Sun Valley. Board members Marilyn Pauley and Carol Nie picked me up from the airport in October 1994. I had heard it was supposed to be ‘pretty,’ but I really wasn’t prepared for the sheer beauty of the surroundings.” Neale adds, “When I arrived, it was one of those bluebird days when the leaves were perfect, the sky was perfect, basically everything was perfect.”

Prior to Neale’s arrival, the small stage in Elkhorn Village is hardly imaginable today. However, throughout Neale’s three decades, he ignited its growth from under a tent, where the orchestra expanded in size, to the current home at the Sun Valley Pavilion. “The first year of the Sun Valley Pavilion, our Gala featured the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I found myself standing in front of a veritable

tsunami of sound, the likes of which I’d never experienced before and haven’t since. It was a visceral thrill.” He adds, “I was impressed with how softly they could sing, and how quickly they could move. The Sanctus from the Verdi requiem flies like the wind, and they ripped through it. And they were equally at home offering a ravishingly beautiful arrangement of Shenandoah. It was an amazing evening.”

There is no denying that Neale’s love and artistic vision for Gustav Mahler have been shared and revered by all Sun Valley Music Festival goers. It’s an incredible gift when Mahler is part of the program. This summer, in celebration of the 40th anniversary and Neale’s 30 years of leadership as its conductor, Sun Valley audiences will experience one of Mahler’s most interesting works, his sixth symphony, which has been called the “Tragic” symphony.

“In recent years we’ve played Gustav Mahler’s second, third, fourth, fifth, and (this summer) sixth symphonies,” says Neale. “Each is, in its own way, like scaling a major peak. It’s a great challenge for a conductor to take on the physical, emotional, and mental challenges that Mahler sets in these huge scores. But the sense of accomplishment for all of us onstage is immense—it’s a deep satisfaction that keeps on giving. I like to conduct them from memory as well—it frees me from the score and lets me look at the musicians through the whole performance. Flying without a safety net forces me to learn the score in extremely fine detail, and I always discover new things, which only adds to the satisfaction.”

This summer’s celebration is as exciting to Neale as it will be to those who can attend one of Sun Valley’s most anticipated summer happenings curated with world-class guest artists and musicians. “There is something for everyone,” says. Neale. “It’s a team effort to program the Festival, and after 30 years, we have learned a great deal.” 

“Flying without a safety net forces me to learn the score in extremely fine detail, and I always discover new things, which only adds to the satisfaction.”

CATCHING UP WITH

STEPHANIE CHILDRESS

Festival Associate Conductor shares 2024 season

Stephanie Childress, the vigorous young associate conductor of Sun Valley Music Festival, grew up watching the English National Opera rehearsals in London, where she was born. That budding love of opera inspired her to become a conductor. She first picked up a baton at age 15, won the second prize at the 2020 conducting competition La Maestra about six years later, and eventually found her way to Missouri, where she spent three years as the assistant conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Thinking back on her first season in Sun Valley, last year, two highlights were her performance of Schubert’s Unfinished symphony and the hiking. “It’s a perfect blend of work and leisure,” she says. She’s kept busy during the time leading up to her second season, which begins July 29, with engagements around the world including debuts in Japan, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the U.S. “I sort of did a tour of the globe,” she remarks. Earlier this year, she was appointed principal guest conductor the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, which she first conducted in 2022.

On July 30, Childress leads the orchestra through Mozart’s great, sunny Symphony No. 36, “Linz.” It will be her first time conducting it, though she’s very familiar with Mozart symphonies and has conducted three of his operas and the Requiem in the last two years. “The most important thing in the symphonies is to bring up the inner drama and to weave a real narrative throughout the movements,” she says. On a more technical side, she may ask the musicians to play in a way that “I think is true, essentially, to Mozart’s style—perhaps a slightly lighter way of bowing or a different way of phrasing than they might normally do for a big Romantic symphony.”

After the August 4 concert, in which she performs Rossini’s William Tell overture and Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, a highlight of the festival, on August 13, will be Childress’s performance of the Beethoven Triple Concerto for violin, cello, and piano. Of the soloists—violinist Jeremy Constant, cellist Amos Yang, and pianist Peter Henderson— she knows the latter best as Henderson serves as Principal Keyboard for the St. Louis Symphony.

On August 19, Childress conducts the Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, a landmark 20th-century opera that put Britten on the map as a major opera composer from England. The instrumental interludes, usually performed in concert as a suite, depict the fraught psychological state of the characters, especially the disintegrating Grimes.

“My dream is not only to conduct all the Britten operas but to record them,” Childress says.

“Britten is not often performed in the U.S., so it was a big goal of mine to get some of his work programmed this season.” 

“The

most important thing in the symphonies is to bring up the inner drama and to weave a real narrative throughout the movements.”

2024 SUN VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL

GUEST ARTISTS

For over 40 years, the Sun Valley Music Festival has presented some of the world’s most gifted and revered classical music performing musicians and artists. These men and women are the most accomplished in their fields, providing the Sun Valley community with incredible performances. For 2024, the Festival raises the bar even higher to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The talented guest artists and musicians who perform for this year’s summer season continue the Sun Valley Music Festival tradition as an extraordinary cultural experience that is free to our Sun Valley community.

GUEST ARTISTS

Meechot Marrero

Soprano Meechot Marrero returns to Sun Valley following her sparkling debut in 2022 in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. A member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble, she was described by El Nuevo Día as “a revelation…a young Puerto Rican star with a great career ahead.” Last season, Marrero debuted in several roles including Nannetta in Falstaff, Biancofiore in a new production of Francesca da Rimini by Christof Loy, Musetta in La Bohème, Tebaldo in Don Carlo, and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, and returned to the roles of Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Frasquita in Carmen, Bianca in La Rondine, and Liù in Turandot. In prior seasons, she has appeared with Deutsche Oper Berlin, the San Antonio Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Puerto Rico Symphony, among others.

Marrero has performed extensively in her home country of Puerto Rico. She received the Career Bridges grant from the Schuyler Foundation and the Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Prize from the Yale School of Music, where she received a Master of Music from Yale Opera.

Jeffrey Zeigler

Cello

Admired as a potent collaborator and unique improviser, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler has commissioned dozens of new works. As a member of the internationally renowned Kronos Quartet from 2005 to 2013, he is the recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, the Polar Music Prize, the President’s Merit Award from the Recording Academy (Grammys), the Chamber Music America National Service Award, and The Asia Society’s Cultural Achievement Award.

A multifaceted career has led Zeigler to collaborations with Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Vijay Iyer, and Yo-Yo Ma. Recent and upcoming concertos written for him include Mark Adamo’s Last Year (at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra), Andy Akiho’s Cello Concerto (premiered here at the Sun Valley Music Festival, followed by performances with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra), and Amy Brandon’s Simulacra (Open Waters Festival).

Zeigler has released 40 solo and chamber music recordings and appeared with Norah Jones on her album Not Too Late and on the Golden Globenominated soundtrack to the Darren Aronofsky film The Fountain. He was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Chamber Music and Innovation at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Sir Stephen Hough Piano

One of the most distinctive artists of his generation, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career as a pianist with those of composer and writer. Named by The Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths, Sir Hough was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2001, and he was knighted by His Majesty King Charles III in 2023. He has been a regular guest at festivals including Aspen, Edinburgh, Hollywood Bowl, Salzburg, Tanglewood, and the BBC Proms, where he has made 29 concerto appearances, including playing all the works of Tchaikovsky for piano and orchestra.

Sir Hough’s catalog of over 60 albums has garnered several Grammy nominations, Gramophone Record of the Year, and the Gramophone Gold Disc Award, which named his complete Saint-Saëns Piano Concertos as the best recording of the past 30 years. A noted writer, he has also contributed articles to The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Times, and he has published four books, including a book of essays titled Rough Ideas: Reflections on Music and More and a memoir: Enough: Scenes from Childhood.

Although he won First Prizes at the 1966 Busoni Competition in Italy and the 1968 Montréal Piano Competition, it was his 1970 triumph at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where he won the Gold Medal (and remains the single American to have done so), that brought him worldwide recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. Since then, he has made nearly a dozen tours of Poland, where he retains immense popularity.

HOW TO ATTEND A CONCERT

For complete information about attending Festival Concerts and a map of the property visit svmusicfestival.org/attending-a-concert.

GENERAL INFORMATION

 All concerts are admission-free, except the Gala.

 All concerts are held in the Sun Valley Pavilion, beginning at 6:30pm, and last approximately one hour except when noted.

CHOOSE YOUR SEATING LOCATION

PAVILION SEATING

Free seats are always available to the public.

 Seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

 The line for Pavilion seats forms on the East Terrace, mostly in the shade, and with some chairs available to ease the wait. The time when people start lining up varies from concert to concert.

 People waiting in line are seated beginning at 5:30pm and are seated before other entrances to the Pavilion are opened. Volunteer ushers assist in identifying open seats.

 Any reserved donor seats that are unclaimed by 6:15pm will be released to the public just prior to the performance. Please see an usher or concert services member to access the line for these seats.

Terrace bars open at 5:30pm.

 Snacks and beverages purchased at these bars are allowed in the Pavilion, as are personal water bottles (but no other outside food or drink).

 Bars close 5 to 10 minutes before the concert.

 Note: No glass containers or coolers are permitted in the Pavilion.

Photography

 As a courtesy to musicians and fellow guests, please refrain from taking photographs or video at any time during the performance.

LAWN SEATING

Come during the day, or just before the concert. Find a spot on the lawn.

 Note: Blankets are fine, but tarps are not allowed. For the sake of the grass, they will be removed. You may reclaim them at the Welcome Center.

 Low-backed chairs are appropriate for all areas on the lawn — if a basketball could fit under your chair, it’s too tall and could obstruct others’ views.

Where should I sit? While there are no hard rules, here are some common practices:

 The most focused listeners tend to sit toward the front of the lawn, closest to the Pavilion, and there is little-to-no conversation during the performance in this area.

 Groups that enjoy both the music and social time find themselves in the middle of the lawn. There may be some casual, quiet conversation during the performances here. Please be courteous and mindful of your neighbors.

 The rear of the lawn welcomes families and groups with dogs. This is the noisiest section of the lawn, although most people are still listening to the concert.

 Children often play freely on the lower lawn during the concerts.

OTHER GUIDELINES

 Pavilion seating is most appropriate for children ages 10 and above.

 Please silence your phones and other devices before the concert begins.

 Drones are not permitted on the property.

 Only credentialled assistance dogs are allowed in the Pavilion.

 Dogs are welcomed on the lawn. Please keep any high-energy dogs along the perimeter or at the rear of the lawn.

TEA AND CATASTROPHE

The Argyros Presents Escaped Alone

Celebrated, awarded, and admired British playwright Caryl Churchill’s Escaped Alone is as relevant, if not more appropriate, in 2024 than when it first debuted in 2016. Eighth on The Guardian’s top 50 plays list of the 21st century, Escaped Alone is a simple scenario with three old friends and a neighbor who come together in a backyard during summer afternoons for, ultimately—tea and catastrophe. Churchill’s convention-defying play juxtaposes backyard tea with environmental disaster, exploring themes of politics, crisis, communications, and female endurance.

“It’s hilarious,” says Sawtooth Productions Artistic Director Jonathan Kane. “It’s four women chit-chatting in a garden about the end of the world.” Kane adds, “Churchill is the greatest feminist writer of our time and the greatest living dramatist. Escaped Alone is extremely prophetic and provides insight into our world through four women in the afterglow of their lives.”

The performance will occur in the Bailey Studio as part of The Argyros Presents productions, which Argyros Creative Director Casey Mott has been programming. “We’re excited to bring a live theater production to The Argyros,” he says. “Utilizing The Bailey space, especially as a black box theater, provides more opportunities for performing arts in a very intimate and engaging setting. It is part of The Argyros programming vision to do more theater, and we are debuting The Bailey with a dynamic production.”

In association with Sawtooth Productions, The Argryos Presents Escaped Alone with a cast of talented Wood River Valley actresses, including Claudia McCain, Kathy Wygle, and Danielle Kennedy, as well as guest actress Sara Morsey. The play is directed by New York City-based Paul Lazar, who returns to direct his third Sun Valley play, having previously directed Outside Mullingar and a workshop of A Case for

the Existence of God. Lazar is a former member of the Wooster Group and formed the internationally acclaimed performance group Big Dance Theater with his wife, choreographer Annie-B Parson, known for David Byrne’s American Utopia and Here Lies Love.

Just under an hour at 55 minutes, Escaped Alone is being produced for a small audience but packing a powerful production. It will feature some very contemporary, poignant theater production effects, with sound and video projection where no detail is spared. In a review of the original London production, The New York Times wrote, “The play’s combination of theatrical technique and untrammeled imagination, and of the personal and the universal, make you understand why Ms. Churchill is regarded by many (rightly, I think) as the most dazzlingly inventive living dramatist in the English language. No one in theater these days is better at exploding and reassembling traditional modes of language and storytelling.”

For more than 30 years, Churchill has cleverly and insightfully explored the societal existence of politics and feminism within the theater environment from a profound experimental angle that leaves one thinking far beyond the performance. “Escaped Alone is unique and profound, providing insight and examination to our world,” says Kane. “Even more exciting is the cast, which includes the best actresses in our Valley.” 

INTRODUCING JULIETTA BRIDAL

A rebranding of Manor House Bridal is a celebration of community and elegance

In the picturesque wedding destination of Sun Valley, Idaho, lies a bridal boutique that epitomizes both style and grace. Formerly known as Manor House Bridal, the shop recently underwent a transformation, emerging anew as Julietta Bridal. Behind this rebranding is Allison Jadallah, a visionary entrepreneur passionate about celebrating local talent and creating unforgettable wedding experiences. Allison’s bridal stylist, Christine Young, has been in the business since the age of 14 and is an expert on the brands Julietta represents. This well-appointed duo will work to ensure that every bride gets the fairytale experience they have always dreamed of.

The transition from Manor House Bridal to Julietta Bridal signifies more than just a change in name; it represents an evolution in the store’s identity and ethos. Allison’s vision for Julietta Bridal is deeply rooted in her love for Sun Valley’s rich history and her journey through the world of fashion. Inspired by the classic glamour of old Hollywood movies and the timeless elegance of style icons like Audrey Hepburn, Allison sought to infuse her boutique with a sense of nostalgia and sophistication.

Participating vendors from left: DJ Chris Hailey, Halsey Pierce of Staging Studio 11, Kaitlyn Wright of Two Hands Floral, Christine Young of Julietta Bridal, Tiffany Berger of Alpen Joy Events, Allison Jadallah of Julietta Bridal, Courtney Barnard of Salted Sprig, Crystal McKenzie of Sun Valley Wine Co., Melanie Dunn Photography, Edge Events, Jacq Frances of Jacq Francis Art, and Kate Cullen of Party Animal Vodka

The decision to rename the store in honor of her grandmother, Julietta, reflects Allison’s deep connection to her family roots. Growing up surrounded by her grandmother’s creativity and talent with a needle, Allison developed a love for styling and fashion that eventually led her to the world of bridal couture. By paying homage to her grandmother, Allison honors her legacy and imbues Julietta Bridal with a palpable sense of warmth and familial love.

Julietta Bridal also stands as a testament to Allison’s commitment to supporting the local community. From the outset, Allison has made it her mission to collaborate with and uplift local vendors, creating a vibrant network of wedding professionals known as the Sun Valley Wedding Vendor Collective. Events like Julietta Bridal’s opening showcase provided a platform for these talented artisans to demonstrate their creativity and contribute to the magic of

weddings in Sun Valley. “In addition to launching the brand and its new location (at 360 North Leadville, Ketchum, Idaho), the goal of the event was to display all the different talent and incredible options available to brides considering planning a wedding here,” says Allison. Furthermore, by establishing initiatives like the year-round discount for local workers and donating gowns to community organizations, Julietta Bridal continuously gives back to the community that has embraced and supported it.

Julietta Bridal endeavors to be inclusive and accessible to brides of all backgrounds and budgets. Allison understands the importance of offering a diverse range of options, from couture gowns to affordable selections, ensuring that every bride who walks through her doors feels valued and celebrated. “We have gowns that range from $1,200$12,000. I talked to many other boutique owners in different cities when I opened. One who was in a large city said to me,

“My vision is quite simple. I want the store to be successful and lasting in Sun Valley. I want brides to know they can find couture in Idaho and save the plane ticket to New York or LA.”

‘You can’t be everything for everyone. Find your niche, and you’ll be more successful.’ At first, I thought that was so logical. But as my first year came to a close, I felt like that advice didn’t apply to me. We’re not in a large city with dozens of other stores just a stone’s throw away. We have brides from all over the country visit us for weddings all over the world. We have to have a little bit of everything for everyone.”

Looking to the future, Allison envisions Julietta Bridal as not just a bridal shop but a cornerstone of the Sun Valley community. “My vision is quite simple. I want the store to be successful and lasting in Sun Valley. I want brides to know they can find couture in Idaho and save the plane ticket to New York or LA. I’ve been able to have exclusivity with a lot of our designers,” she shares. “With these collections, we’re the only store in Idaho, if not the whole Rocky Mountain region. I want every bride to feel like she has the experience of a lifetime and is never rushed, uncomfortable, or pressured.”

With plans to expand the store’s offerings, including bridesmaid dresses and styling services, Allison aims to create a one-stop destination where every aspect of the wedding journey is catered to with care and expertise. In addition, the new offerings will include men’s suits and tuxedo rentals, as well as a selection of evening wear for wedding guests and mothers. Her ultimate goal is to provide brides and their entourages with an experience of a lifetime filled with joy, excitement, and the enduring magic of Sun Valley. 

REBECCA’S PRIVATE IDAHO

Discover summits beyond the gravel

Twelve years ago, Rebecca Rusch launched Rebecca’s Private Idaho (RPI) in Sun Valley to provide a cycling event that the community could embrace. At the time, there were no gravel-specific bikes or events. “We were at the forefront of off-road riding,” says Rusch. “Gravel was not a thing. Even though I am a mountain biker, racer, and athlete at heart, I launched one of the first gravel events in the U.S., as opposed to mountain biking, because it was an interesting way to explore and adventure outside your backyard and more people could come and discover gravel biking in Sun Valley.”

Adventure and exploration have not changed since RPI’s beginnings, even with the explosion and popularity of gravel biking—which Rusch likes to call adventure biking. It is the fastest-growing segment of cycling because people want to get off the road, explore, and appeal to their sense of adventure. “We keep doing it to keep people going on an adventure. RPI will push your mind and body further than you think you can,” says Rusch. “To do a collective group event like RPI, a collective effervescence happens, which is amazing and powerful energy. You meet new people and experience nature with a group, which is needed in our world. It is the best thing I know for physical, mental health and wellness.”

As a professional endurance athlete, seven-time World Champion, author, entrepreneur, Emmy Award winner for her film Blood Road, which premiered at the Sun Valley Film Festival, and motivational speaker, Rusch’s career has spanned the spectrum of adventure sports, including rock climbing, adventure racing, whitewater rafting, crosscountry skiing, and, of course, mountain biking. While RPI remains a bucket list for a wide range of riders, from professional to amateur and others, rated a Top Five Gravel Event by Global Cycling Network and one of the 25 Best Bike Rides in the World by Outside Magazine, it continues to expand its goals.

“The event is not about me,” says Rusch. “It is a journey into the unknown. It’s a remote, beautiful course. You are out of cell phone range, which makes the ride even more special. For example, you still go on a little adventure for the Tater Tot course. It is an explorer mindset, no matter

your physical ability. We have something for every level. If you don’t have a gravel bike, ride a mountain bike. The only requirement is that you have a sense of adventure.”

RPI has grown into more than just riding into three incredible Idaho mountain ranges—the Boulders on the Harriman Trail, Dollarhide Summit in the Smokys, and the Pioneers over Trail Creek Summit. Only in Ketchum, Idaho, and during Rebecca’s Private Idaho can you experience three different gravel rides while enjoying the incredible environs of south-central Idaho. However, you can also give back to others, which is the premise of Rusch’s Be Good Foundation.

RPI is the Be Good Foundation’s largest fundraising event for the year. The four-day event with 1,500-plus attendees allows everyone to learn and understand the Foundation’s purpose and abilities to make incredible strides, including providing bikes to those who want to ride, especially for mental wellbeing. The Be Good Foundation works year-round and

“Being a part of and supporting epic journeys and experiences fortifies the spirit of adventure and life-changing moments, which is awe-inspiring and remarkable.”

hosts local rides and gatherings to continue its mission. It champions LGBQT, women, and those who embody what it means to find their spirit and purpose through biking.

“Through scholarships, we help people get on bikes and ride,” says Rusch. “RPI is our biggest event of the year, and with new board members joining and year-round activations, we are spreading healing, love, and growth through cycling. I am an adventure instigator who helps others reach their goals. While I climb up, I want to reach a hand back and bring others up with me.”

This year, Megan LaBeth will bikepack across the U.S. from New York City to Ketchum, Idaho, to participate in RPI. As a 2023 Be Good Foundation bike-packing scholarship recipient, LeBeth pedals with a passion and purpose to raise awareness for the Foundation’s vital programs, including scholarships and grants that empower and uplift underrepresented cyclists.

“This fundraising dirtbag adventure comes from a passion for charity,” says LaBeth. “Cycling is a sanctuary for me. It has given me strength in life through tragedy and struggle. My mantra, One Rotation at a Time, embodies the power of persistence, the importance of mental health, and the healing nature of cycling. Committing to a 4,000-plus-mile ride across the U.S., starting on what would have been my sister’s 46th birthday, June 11, is more than just fundraising. It’s about connecting to everyone—communities, fellow cyclists, especially women and BIPOC. This ride is deeply personal, dedicated to my sister Johanna and my late partner, Johnny, who were both lost to suicide.”

LaBeth is an ambassador who proves how the Be Good Foundation can change lives by adding purpose and belief through cycling. “Supporting Megan and her dream is what the Be Good Foundation is all about,” says Rusch. “Cycling can strengthen one’s soul and being. Being a part of and supporting epic journeys and experiences fortifies the spirit of adventure and life-changing moments, which is awe-inspiring and remarkable.”

Rusch’s Be Good Foundation scholarship program supports diversity, equity, and inclusion in cycling. This significantly affects the lives of deserving individuals who could not afford to participate in cycling, whether it’s gear, competition, or training. Bikepacking scholarships range from $250 to $2,000 in financial support, gear, and mentorship support for individuals who want to achieve their bikepacking dreams.

Gravel offers a much more exciting and appealing option for those intimidated by single-track because you don’t have the bike or the skill set for mountain biking. RPI has been staged every Labor Day weekend since 2013, which has also had a tremendous economic impact on Sun Valley and assisted Wood River Valley nonprofit projects while bringing more and more visitors to the Valley annually. All RPI expos are free and open to the public, and this year, on Sunday, September 1, the Northern Shoshone Tribe will provide a sunrise ceremony to send riders off with a blessing.

“Bikes change people, move them to explore, and they are transportation for many across the world,” says Rusch. “You are helping yourself and making the world a better place on a bike.” 

SEEKING, LEARNING, SOARING

Far + Wise continues tradition of dreaming big

In 1981, businessman Eugene Lang visited his former elementary school, P.S. 121, in East Harlem. Just before speaking to the graduating sixth graders, the school’s principal told him that only a quarter of the students would finish high school. Lang revised his prepared remarks and told the children that he’d cover their college tuition if they stayed in school and graduated.

So began the “I Have a Dream” Foundation (IHDF), commencing with those 61 “Dreamers.” Chapters of the nonprofit were soon established around the country, and other philanthropists began supporting thousands of students in their communities. IHDF made its way to the Wood River Valley in 2012, as a group of 48 fourth graders at Woodside (now Alturas) Elementary were adopted into the program—the first in Idaho. The young Idahoans were given the same promise as others around the country: financial aid and the ongoing support, tools, and mentorship to see them through.

Laura Rose-Lewis joined the Idaho chapter as its executive director in 2019, bringing her expertise in nonprofit strategic growth, management, and executive coaching. The fourth graders were now sophomores in high school, and as she and her staff supported them through to graduation, they also began to envision a new way forward.“From early on, I knew we could support more kids,” says Rose-Lewis. “I thought, ‘We can grow this and serve hundreds of students each year if we think about it in a different way.’”

So began the creation of what would become Far + Wise, a new nonprofit modeled on IHDF, with the added agility to respond to local students and needs in Blaine County. “We love the ‘I Have a Dream’ organization, and we love their model,” Rose-Lewis says. “We’re staying with the ‘kindergarten through career’ model—supporting children through academic and social-emotional components, enrichment programming, community service, and family engagement programming.”

However, as an independent organization, Far + Wise is no longer bound to support just one class at a time. “We wanted a more sustainable model for our small community,” says Rose-Lewis. “To make sure the kids with the need are being served.”

Instead of a single class receiving all of the organization’s work, new cohorts of 20 kindergartners are adopted each year. This year, Far + Wise will support kindergarten through fifth graders from Bellevue to Hailey and Ketchum. They partake in after-school literacy and math support, activities to develop social and life skills, field trips, outdoor enrichment in partnership with IBC, and community service. As the students transition to middle and high school, they continue to receive tutoring mentorship and workshops on time management, financial literacy, peer relationships, financial literacy, and peer relationships.

And the support keeps going: into post-secondary education with scholarships for those who graduate from the long-term program and career planning. They’ve launched a new Center for Career Exploration, which offers hands-on training and discovery of trade professions outside the academic path for all Blaine County middle and high school students.

Acknowledging how the disparity of wealth in a resort community affects students’ futures, Rose-Lewis says it’s all about creating opportunities. “Parents are working two,

“We’re staying with the ‘kindergarten through career’ model—supporting children through academic and socialemotional components, enrichment programming, community service, and family engagement programming.”

three, and four jobs,” she says, “and it’s difficult to provide the academic support and enrichment opportunities and programs that higher-income peers have access to.”

But, she notes, Far + Wise isn’t daycare either; it is an academic and enrichment program and parental involvement and regular attendance is key to each student’s success. And the support of generous individuals, local organizations, and business owners makes their work possible. Ultimately, though, it’s up to the students. “They’re the powerful ones who can make it happen for themselves. We just create the opportunities,” says Rose-Lewis.

For the 2024-25 school year, Far + Wise will serve more than 120 students in its K-5 programs and another 150 students through the Center. They partner in additional summer programming with the YMCA, BCSD, and others that support hundreds of additional students, and they also continue to support the original cohort graduates, all 55 of whom are now engaged in two- and four-year schools, the military, or other career training.

“We want students to go far and wide in their explorations and lives. Wisdom isn’t just academic,” Rose-Lewis says. “It’s life skills, job training, community. That’s what we’re building.” 

SANCTUARY IN LOWER STANLEY

Stanley River Retreat & Cabins is imaginable

What distinguishes Idaho from so many other states in the U.S. is the forethought that was put in place decades ago to maintain its natural wild lands and beauty. Modern society often feels like it is moving toward a lightspeed where it is impossible to find preservation and calm, to be still, and to reset one’s body, mind, and soul. Stanley River Retreat & Cabins, nestled in the picturesque Sawtooth Valley, can be an antitode for that. Stanley River Retreat & Cabins sits along the banks of the Salmon River. Its tranquil haven offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Sawtooth Mountains.

The Stanley River Retreat & Cabins, newly remodeled and preserved in all its beauty and allure alongside the Salmon River, is located in Lower Stanley, just minutes from Stanley proper. Yet it feels miles away, as the Salmon River is only steps from each cabin, framed by the majestic Sawtooths. Fulfilling her dreams, Stanley River Retreat & Cabins’ new owner, Levie Smith, is dedicated to continuing a tradition of idyllic mountain cabin life and enjoyment for all guests.

“I’m honored to be the new owner and I take a great deal of pride in maintaining the wonderful experience these cabins have offered guests over the last 50 years. It was important to me while remodeling the cabins to maintain the rustic log cabin ambience while blending the modern comforts and oldworld charm, providing guests with a calming interior, clean atmosphere, high-quality linens, and bedding to promise a memorable visit.”

“I hope to share this experience with guests to reconnect with nature and experience the serene beauty of the Sawtooth Mountains and Salmon River for many years to come.”

As a successful woman in business and marketing with a passion for real estate and remodeling, Smith has always been very comfortable working in property upgrades while maintaining heritage and appeal. Originally from Virginia, Smith’s career includes renovating historical monuments in Washington, D.C. while working at La Salle Partners until moving to the Wood River Valley where she has sold real estate for the last 30 years. “It’s nice to have the option to spend time in both locations,” she says. “I am very grateful to have the best of both worlds. I love my time working in Sun Valley and also cherish time spent in beautiful Stanley, Idaho.”

Even with all the outdoor options, porch time and sitting on the banks of the Salmon River is priceless. It offers tranquility and encourages the moment to take a breath. Imagine sitting on your own private deck listening to the river flow while sipping coffee and simply being present.

As part of her ongoing operations, Smith will be hosting wellness events, retreats, and gatherings every month as

she continues to make the property a year-round destination. Additions to come include a state-of-the-art multi-person sauna, which is only the beginning. Whether you’re seeking solace and yoga retreats, inspiration, business gatherings, or simply wish to indulge in culinary or artistic pursuits, an unforgettable escape awaits.

The Stanley River Retreat & Cabins offers an array of 15 pet-friendly, cozy, meticulously maintained, and clean cabins year-round to accommodate families and group requests. CREATING BEAUTIFUL THINGS

Jeffrey Homchick and Luxe Stone
Kitchen designed by Heather McGregor of Redeux Decor
PHOTOS

Hidden away at the south end of Hailey’s industrial area is a spectacular surprise for anyone who loves fine stone. Luxe Stone, overseen by owner and artist Jeffrey Homchick, houses a rotating selection of more than 3,000 slabs, from marble and granite to onyx and travertine. Minerals like serpentine and feldspar forge exquisite veining and a whirl of colors and textures in each.

“There are some beautiful things that come out of the earth,” Homchick says. “Each slab is like a work of art.” Many of the ‘works’ he carries have been hand-selected by Homchick, often during visits to the quarries of Argentina, Brazil, France, and Italy.

“We get to practice craftsmanship at its highest level. It’s like building a Steinway every time. It’s really fun. I love what I do. I help people create beautiful things.”
—Jeffrey Homchick
Clockwise from top: Marble, Colorado quarry; Carrera white from Italy; Jack and Ace of Spades are Rouge Du Rio from France, Thassos white from Greece, Amarillo idallo from Spain, and black granite from Zimbabwe; Fireplace is rainforest quartzite from India.

“Stone is almost like a snowflake,” he says, whether it’s Colorado Stone Quarries’ brecciated Crazy Horse marble with green and brown tones or the distinctive Italian Calacatta Gold marble with gray and gold veining. “You get different things, even out of the same quarry.”

During his four decades in the business, Homchick has become good friends with quarry owners from Colorado to Carrara, Italy. He’s secured distribution rights to the U.S.’s major quarries in Vermont and Colorado, offering his clients stones from the same cut as those used in the Lincoln Memorial and many of the monuments in Washington, D.C.

Since starting his own business in 1985, Homchick has seen stones from the moment they’re carved out from under a mountain to the finish on yachts, airplanes, and homes. Homchick’s life in stone began as a teenage bricklayer in his hometown of Seattle. Soon, he began apprenticing under three legendary Italian stonemasons.

“I learned from the old guys,” he says, “and then melded technology into old-world craftsmanship.”

Working with new technologies, including using a patented vacuum infusion process that allows slabs to be cut thin while maintaining strength, allows enough flexibility for rounded spaces.

Much of Homchick’s career has involved stonework for major yacht designers: palette-bending marble for spiral staircases, designing custom inlays for bathrooms, and creating fine details for fountains, fireplaces, and kitchens.

In Idaho, he continues supplying aviation and nautical projects from Seattle to Holland and Australia, though Sun Valley homes have become his newest focus. A skier from a young age, Homchick began visiting Sun Valley as a teen. He bought a place in the Valley around 2007, then fully relocated from Seattle in 2021.

In 2017, he opened the Stone Art Gallery in Ketchum, showcasing some of his stone and gem art pieces and those of artist friends Zee Haag and Luigi Talara. The gallery closed five years later during the pandemic. Now working by appointment only from the Luxe Stone warehouse, Homchick spends time with each client to ensure they have something unique.

As a wholesale supplier and consultant, he helps clients select materials best suited to their home projects, whether quartzite, granite, or onyx for larger spaces, or rose quartz, lapis lazuli, or amethyst for more distinctive details and lapidary art.

“We are always striving to do something unique,” Homchick says. “We get to practice craftsmanship at its highest level. It’s like building a Steinway every time. It’s really fun. I love what I do. I help people create beautiful things.” 

THE ART OF A RUG

Davies-Reid humanitarian interests are Ketchum’s treasure

When your home becomes the haven you have always dreamed about, objects and décor often have significant meaning and purpose. Living in the environs of Sun Valley, there are incredible resources, some of the best in the country, in which your home can mirror your tastes, affections, and interests. Sun Valley has often seen treasures and valuables from faraway destinations available to its visitors and residents, adding to its allure and global connections, which Davies-Reid in Ketchum reflects.

Idaho natives Terry Reid and his late wife Susan Davies developed a passion for travel and expedition, seeking unique and collectible items. This ardent desire to search out and discover evolved into a business with many elements of interest and depth, especially for the Davies-Reid rug collection.

The Turkman Weaving Project, a significant endeavor conceived on one of the many expeditions and adventures Davies and Reid bravely pursued, upholds a sense of cross-cultural exchange from Idaho to the world of Central Asia. Founded in 1990, the Turkman Weaving Project

Terry Reid

“A rug made correctly adds to one’s sense of culture and beliefs. It tells a story and provides a sense of heritage and connection to a broader world and life that is unique and authentic.”

was created out of a refugee camp as a means for people to sustain their lives fleeing a war-torn Afghanistan. It supports the women and families who make the rugs a viable business, which continues to supply Davies-Reid today with an incredible collection of hand-woven of-a-kind rugs throughout the store.

“Quality is everything in a rug,” says Reid. “You feel a rug to see what it is. Made in women’s homes, large rugs require much space. It’s real life. There could be several women weaving on a big rug at various times leaving large combs as place holders. Often the women have their children around them. It’s their tradition, which is rare.” Reid adds, “We work in Pakistan and also Afghanistan, and the Taliban do not disrupt women working in their homes in the far northern reaches of Afghanistan doing what they have been doing for centuries, and the Turkman Weaving Project supports them.”

Davies and Reid built a bustling trade channel from scratch. However, Reid brought back the personal touch by revitalizing the basic raw materials—high mountain handspun wool and vegetal dyes.

“Through the Turkman Weaving Project two schools were built in two different refugee camps. It ultimately led to the Yurts to Universities Foundation to pay for girls’ education, which continues today,” says Reid. “A rug made correctly adds to one’s sense of culture and beliefs. It tells a story and provides a sense of heritage and connection to a broader world and life that is unique and authentic. One of the beautiful things about the way the rugs are created, even if for the women who make them, is that this is their meditation time. It’s a time of creation for these dedicated weavers.”

With a great deal of inventory and continuous shipments arriving from Pakistan and Afghanistan, Davies-Reid is a space where rugs can be enjoyed within a store of exotic and worldly goods, often rare and of historical meaning, that will enhance a home in many conceivable ways including to tie a room together or add a burst of color and design needed in today’s modern settings and contemporary spaces.

“It’s an experience to purchase a rug with great meaning and purpose,” says Reid. “The quality and design of our rugs are rare in our modern world of click-to-buy, especially since you can take a rug home to try out.” 

“We’ve designed many kitchens over the years,” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “One of our go-to moves incorporates small appliance storage into our custom cabinetry. If you continue the upper cabinets straight down to the counter, it is an easy slide in and out. When you store those items away, your kitchen appears clean and uncluttered, and don’t forget, there are outlets in your oncounter garage!”

DAYDREAM ABOUT SUNSHINE

Behold Sun Valley’s new Elkhorn townhomes

For those who dream of their slice of paradise in Sun Valley, Idaho, Sunshine Townhomes may be your ray of light. Nestled in the heart of Elkhorn Village, just off the circle, Sunshine is completing its first phase of 42 mountainmodern townhomes, which spare no detail for style, comfort, accessibility, or Sun Valley living at its best. As a four-season lifestyle community, Sunshine delivers on every level of beauty, luxury, and serenity with easy access to town. A Mountain Rides bus stop is steps away, and on a good snow year, residents can ski in and ski out on Dollar.

Set for occupancy in the next few months, Sunshine has several available floorplans for purchase, with more on the horizon ranging from five-bedroom to two-bedroom residences with private attached garages, luxury finishes, and

beautiful sightlines into the Pioneer Mountains. Hiking, biking, and all the Elkhorn amenities, including recreation areas for kids, pools, hot tubs, tennis courts, pickleball courts, and golf access, make these new and well-designed residences some of the most prized in Sun Valley. Sunshine’s elevated, contemporary appeal also provides warm and welcoming mountain living year-round, both part-time and full-time.

In Phase 1, two-, three-, and five-bedroom luxury townhomes are currently available for reservation. These spacious units include an open floor plan and stairwell reaching three floors with elevator access. On the ground floor, private garages flank the townhome entrance, providing excellent storage possibilities for those who

enjoy Sun Valley’s outdoor activities. Tandem cars or gear— kayaks, snow machines, mountain bikes—are all possible at a Sunshine townhome. A modern, large utility room on the ground floor is a homeowner’s dream, housing central air and heat, an energy recovery system, and providing modern utility access with the potential for unique upgrades for water softeners or other needs for comfortable living.

“We wanted to deliver a townhome project and product that sits at the same level that is the nicest in the Sun Valley/ Ketchum area,” says Stan Nix of Timberline Real Estate Partners in Austin, Texas, with an in-house construction company headquartered in Ketchum. “Hand-blown glass for lighting, incredible amounts of storage, a kitchen for all to be in, and upgraded plaster throughout the bedrooms are

just a few of the many things we thought about for an upscale home in Sun Valley. We wanted Sunshine Townhomes to be special, unique, soft, and appealing and built out over time, so there is some breathing room in the market. There was a great deal of nuanced thinking for Sunshine.”

Using Rocky Mountain Hardware throughout, the townhomes feature a variety of finishes that boast clean lines along with soft timber and stone accents, especially a large, centerpiece gas-lit fireplace that provides a cabin feel in a very modern build. Sunshine is where the mountain lifestyle meets contemporary living.

Modern cabinetry from Sawtooth Concepts in Boise, a bevy of contemporary lighting fixtures and sconces, appealing white oak flooring, and natural wool carpeting provide a mountain-modern ambiance throughout the townhome. Bathrooms range in size from complete to single, featuring a soaking tub, walk-in tiled and glass-open showers, and a jack-and-jill for the secondary bedrooms. All bathrooms have exquisite tiling, large modern medicine cabinets, and sinks with buildouts. The second floor features a convenient builtin closet for laundry, which is silent.

“All the four- and five-bedroom units have elevators and a downstairs room that can be used as a media room or bedroom with plenty of storage,” says Nix. “Soft tones and colors allow for many design ideas and decorating. The many built-ins were created for efficiency and can handle all Sun Valley needs for seasonal clothing and more.”

There are plenty of cabinets and ample storage in the kitchen, an open dining room, and a living room with a desk and bar. Lighting was well thought out throughout the townhome on every level, along with views from each area of Elkhorn, providing that feeling of mountain living that is only available in Elkhorn.

A gourmet kitchen features all Wolf, Sub-Zero, and Cove appliances, leathered quartzite counters, and rift-sawn oak millwork. The open floor plan includes living space,

dining space, and other home enjoyments. A large private terrace for outdoor dining provides southern views along with other terraces from the living and dining areas and the thirdfloor bedroom. These luxury townhomes are perfect for those seeking ease, extra space, and beautiful mountain-modern design where comfort meets modern style and quality for the family holiday or a vacation getaway with friends.

One of the most important elements of Sunshine’s thoughtful construction is that the townhomes are entirely soundproof.

An open two-story main living area provides space, comfort, and ease for families and guests with beautiful natural light.
“We wanted the Sunshine townhomes to be special, unique, soft, and appealing.”
—Stan Nix

SOURCES

There is hardly any outside or peripheral noise unless a window or door to the outside has been opened. The idea of having different balconies for a townhome also makes the entire living space feel grand and memorable, especially with the variety of windows throughout, which considers all the day’s sunlight—a small element that will be appreciated for a lifetime.

“Sunshine offers exceptional townhome living in the heart of Elkhorn, and we are thrilled to be part of the team,” says Grady Burnett of Keller Williams Sun Valley Southern Idaho. “It’s been wonderful working with Timberline Real Estate Partners, as they are passionate about this community and committed to delivering an outstanding, timeless product.” 

ESSENTIAL ATV TIPS

Staying safe to enjoy adventures

Every summer, St. Luke’s treats individuals in the emergency department for injuries that could have been prevented. One of the most common is injuries from ATV accidents. To help keep you safe and out of the emergency department this summer, we’ve compiled some essential ATV safety tips.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are popular for outdoor work and recreation, offering thrilling experiences and practical utility. However, they can also pose significant safety risks if not operated correctly. According to the latest data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a staggering 81,800 ATV-related emergency department-treated injuries were reported in 2018, with over a quarter of those injuries affecting children under the age of 16.

To prevent accidents and injuries while enjoying your ATV, here are some crucial safety guidelines to keep in mind:

STICK TO OFF-ROAD TRAILS

While it may be legal, it’s important to recognize that ATVs are not designed for operation on paved public roads. Using ATVs on paved roads increases the risk of collision with other vehicles, which can lead to severe injury or even death. Stay safer by sticking to off-road trails and designated areas for ATV riding.

GET PROPER TRAINING

One of the best ways to ensure safe use is to receive proper training from a qualified instructor. Enrolling in a course offered by organizations like the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) can give you and your children the basic knowledge to handle an ATV effectively. These courses teach riders how to

properly operate an ATV, navigate different terrains, and avoid potential hazards.

WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR

Wearing the right protective gear is another critical aspect of ATV safety. Always use a DOT-compliant helmet to protect your head in case of a crash or collision. Additionally, wear eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt to shield your body from debris, branches, and other hazards while riding. Proper gear can minimize the risk of injuries and keep you safe during off-road adventures.

AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOR

Avoiding risky behavior is essential when riding an ATV. Stay within the recommended number of passengers for your vehicle. Ensure children under 16 drive ageappropriate youth model ATVs and never adult-sized vehicles. Always supervise young riders, as they may need more strength, skills, or judgment to operate an ATV safely. Only permit continued use if the child has demonstrated the ability to ride safely.

NEVER RIDE UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Never operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired judgment and slowed response times can lead to disastrous consequences while riding an ATV.

Remember, an ATV is not a toy but a powerful vehicle that requires skill and responsibility to operate safely. By following these tips and guidelines, you can enjoy off-road adventures while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries. Stay safe, and have fun on your ATV rides! 

DAVID BROOKS HEADLINES ST. LUKE’S WOOD RIVER FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING SPEAKER SERIES

The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation is thrilled to announce that David Brooks, renowned journalist, cultural commentator, and The New York Times columnist, will be the keynote speaker at this summer’s annual Health & Well-being speaker series. He will discuss his latest bestselling book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen

Brooks is a bestselling author, op-ed columnist at the New York Times, and recurring commentator on PBS NewsHour. He has a gift for bringing readers and audiences face-to-face with the spirit of our times with humor, insight, and quiet passion. He is a keen observer of the American way of life.

In How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen, Brooks seeks to explore and explain humanity and the way we live. With intellectual curiosity and emotional wisdom, he underscores the value of community and the importance of human connection. Aside from psychology, neuroscience, theater, philosophy, and history, Brooks presents a path to understanding others skillfully. He contends that seeing others deeply is an opportunity to understand them better and discover something larger in ourselves and our community. Brooks offers a remedy in a society often marked by fragmentation and misperception—a path to genuine connections and connected communities.

The event, made possible by generous community philanthropy, will be offered free to the community. Reservations are required.

DR. MOLLY BROWN ON THE

POWER OF POSITIVE FOCUS

Living a full life

Declining health, confusing and mixed information, and a lack of effective solutions present a modern crisis in health and health care. This crisis can be counteracted with personal sovereignty, cognitive efficiency, and positive focus. These are tools we all have to harness our own power to be healthy, clear-minded, and pain-free on all levels. Daily personal habits can contribute to a state of health and well-being that is empowered and effective.

Personal sovereignty, grounded in positive focus with a connection to a greater universal source and social support, emphasizes conscious decisions and outcomes. Personal sovereignty allows us to make informed decisions regarding the quality of foods we consume, the quality of people we surround ourselves with, and our quality of life for a healthy state of being. Individuals can have an active, engaged, informed approach to their health. You have to want to feel so good that you only do things that make you feel good.

In our role as human beings and in our quest to achieve body-mind-spirit health, we are not passive patients, subject to the whim of pharmaceuticals, big ag, and corporations. We are alive, free, wild people who need to have self-awareness to cultivate an understanding of our bodies, minds, and emotions. We as people have the ability to make informed decisions grounded in comprehensive information and proactively advocate for our needs. We need to wake up!

Healthy and vibrant lives are readily achievable and should be our top priority.

The United States has declined with the health of their food, soil, toxicity, and people, which is happening at an alarming rate. Diabetes, cancer, and anxiety/depression have increased 30-80% every ten years. Eighty percent of Americans are on anti-depressants. This is a crisis! It is up to us to desire and seek better. But we have to want it! A healthy life is a fulfilled and fun life. It is the best life.

Organic high-quality local foods, products, and environments can keep us healthy, clear, and engaged. It is up to us to be active and proactive, engaged, not passive, lazy, and uninformed. Travel outside the United States makes this decline readily apparent. The ingredients in our food are banned in most other countries and not accepted as food. Ingredients that make us sick, confused, and mentally impaired. Food in other countries tastes entirely different— filling, flavorful, and energizing. Unhealthy and toxic food leads to unhealthy and toxic bodies and confused minds.

We must protect our bodies and minds and prioritize clarity of thought to assess relevant information and make informed and clear decisions based on that information. For example, studies show that consumption of white sugar quickly leads to a confused mental state, declining physical and ethical health, and an impairment in the ability to make simple decisions or problem-solve. All processed foods have sugar and GMO foods as their main ingredients. An ability to problem-solve with inspiration and creativity is the key to health and success in all aspects of life.

A positive focus, existing in the present and being excited about the future, directs your focus toward thoughts, emotions, outcomes, and people that make you feel good. This is a potent psychological tool to influence a fulfilled life. Beyond maintaining a positive focus, connection with support and mentors and connections lowers cortisol levels, enhances immune function, improves mental health, and reduces disease risk. Having support, even one friend who loves you with all their heart can anchor you in a grounded state in a difficult world. Being that for others achieves the same effect.

My favorite techniques for developing a positive state and positive focus daily are:

 The 6 Phase Meditation (found on Mindvalley app)

A 15-minute meditation that sequences you through Love and Compassion, Appreciation, Gratitude, Forgiveness, 3-Year Projections, The Perfect Day, and Connection to Source. These six phases change your life considerably each morning, early morning.

 Early morning river cold plunge. Three minutes. It increases testosterone and HGH, drastically improves positive mood and focus, increases energy, and reduces all inflammation associated with autoimmune and chronic immune conditions while balancing blood sugar and improving metabolism.

 Positive home and work environment. If these are not, make changes. Nothing is more important.

 Social connection . Be around others who lift and inspire you. In turn, lift and inspire others, especially children.

According to Dr. Hedda Berntsen, World Champion and Olympic Medalist skier for Norway and founder of Play Spirit 365, “to be willing to make decisions that give you health and happiness, this is what life and success in life is about. Choose what makes you happy and what is good for

you. It’s that simple. Excitement and fun lead to intrinsic motivation, which increases performance. The emphasis must be on what makes you feel good, inspired, joyful, and happy as the primary motivation.”

The integration of positive focus, desire for health, and personal sovereignty can and will unlock the potential to transform health and well-being and allow a healthy state to blossom. Healthy and vibrant lives are readily achievable and should be our top priority. 

THE RETURN OF

LUK AS NELSON

Get ready for country soul funk

Lukas Nelson has a special place in the hearts of his Sun Valley fans. We attended all his shows with great excitement at the former Whiskey Jacques’ on Main Street, where he parked his father’s (Willie Nelson) tour bus in front, would say hello to everyone from its door, and even welcomed some of us aboard. Inside, on stage, Lukas rocked the house—every single show he performed in Ketchum. We knew he was going to be a star.

A GRAMMY and BAFTA Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician Lukas Nelson has established himself as one of music’s most respected voices. His latest album, 2023’s Sticks and Stones, has been a massive success, spending 18 weeks in the top 10 of the Americana Albums chart and earning him two #1 singles. His collaboration with Lainey Wilson, another Sun Valley favorite, who has performed in the Valley on her rise to stardom, on “More Than Friends” has further solidified his place in the music world, with the song also nominated for Collaborative Video of the Year at the 2024 CMT Music Awards.

Released to widespread critical acclaim, The Wall Street Journal praises, “[Nelson] makes the genre his own...This is a fresh and welcome addition to what he’s offered so far,” while The Tennessean declared, “thoughtful, timeless Southernstyle rock featuring anything from introspective lyricism to virtuoso-style musicianship.”

“…what I love to do live is play country soul funk.”
—Lukas Nelson

Since his debut over a decade ago, the Texas and Hawaiibased artist has performed countless sold-out headline dates and festivals, demonstrating the electric energy of his live shows. In addition to his own projects, Nelson also co-produced the music for 2018’s lauded film A Star Is Born, appeared in the movie, and went on to win a BAFTA Award for Best Original Music and a GRAMMY Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

After turning inward for his 2021 album, A Few Stars Apart, the frontman of Lukas Nelson + POTR is reaching further into his country music roots than ever before. Although Sticks and Stones is front-loaded with tonguein-cheek humor and full-throttle tempos, the album also makes time for reflection, allowing fans to glimpse a different side of Nelson’s personality. As the album’s producer, he achieves the near impossible: Capturing the electrifying energy of Lukas Nelson + POTR concert on a studio project.

“I’ve learned from some of the best producers, and I’ve been around for quite a lot of great production,” he says. “I did production on A Star is Born, which was my first foray into it, and we were very successful with that. I feel confident in my arrangements and building the songs, but the other guys in the band are also very savvy in production. We were having a lot of fun making this record, which is what

it’s all about. I feel fortunate to be able to play with these musicians.”

He adds, “I started to realize that all of my favorite songs I’ve written are written for what I love to do live. And what I love to do live is play country soul funk. Something with a nice backbeat, something you can move to, and something that makes you want to sing along and shout out at the top of your lungs.”

With his unique style and talented band, the Sun Valley Pavilion is set to host a show that will mark the end of an amazing summer. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate eight years of RJK Entertainment Sun Valley Pavilion shows than with Lukas Nelson, the first band to perform back in 2016 on the same day! It will be one for the history books,” says RJK Entertainment, LLC Owner Ryan Kolquist.

Folk and Americana musician Ken Pomeroy with full band will open for Lukas Nelson. Influenced by John Denver, Buck Meek, Jake Xerxes Fussell, and Gillian Welch, Pomeroy is inspired by the voices of a preceding generation.

The Sun Valley Pavilion lawn and last chance back row seating are avaialble. This show is guaranteed to sell out, so make sure to get tickets. 

“Through the process of addition and subtraction, the painting gradually matures. Often unexpected things appear. It is the serendipitous nature of this process that fires my imagination.”

After He Left for Santa Fe by Janet Starr Mixed media paper on wood panel 48” x 48”
“As an artist I believe that structure, color, and emotional impact are the key factors in a successful work of art.

The hard decision making in the studio should result, if a painting is to be successful, in a cohesive visual sensation that demands more than one viewing, whether the work is representational, abstract or just lush texture and color.”

“My paintings are not pre-conceived other than choosing the palette of colors I will use for a canvas. When I begin, I don’t start here and end there. I start with a stroke, and I let the paint tell me where I am going… Some have said my paintings are very ethereal.”

“Over the last ten years, I have incorporated traditional metalsmithing, adding sheetmetal and wire to my hand-built pieces with rivets and solder and setting cabochon gemstones. Today I merge these myriad influences and use the plant kingdom’s textures and forms in all my jewelry pieces.”

“When I’m working on a painting, I think about strong emotional connections to certain places in the natural world and why they draw me in. My paintings reflect the impressions left in my mind by a lifetime of exploring the West. Hidden in plain sight, but every bit as spectacular as what the Impressionists saw, are the dramatically lit mountain ranges, prairies, deserts, forests, lakes, rivers, and elusive wildflowers. It is a constant and humbling challenge to somehow honor this fragile natural world.”

My mixed media portraits of trees from across the United States can be found at Gilman Contemporary in Ketchum, HidellBrooks in Charlotte, North Carolina, Blue Print Gallery In Dallas, Texas, and my studio in Ketchum.”

“The pieces in this show are woven exclusively with waxed linen cordage, 7- and 12-ply. I use twining, an over-and-under technique. I start each piece from the bottom and weave up the inside first. When I get to the desired height, I weave back down the outside of the basket and join the bottom to form a watertight double-walled piece. A doublewalled basket is extremely sturdy, and it will hold water.”

“These ain’t your grandma’s quilts (no offense to grandma, p.s. I am one!) When deciding on a business name, J Coterie just felt right. The word, coterie, means an intimate group of like-minded people with shared tastes, interests, and purposes. No matter how big my circle gets, that is what I strive to create.”

Left and right baskets are doublewalled, waxed linen. Middle basket is double-walled, waxed linen with bead, twined.

“Why do we collect art? It totally enriches our lives and brings us beyond our routine or mundane experience of life. I have devoted my art to the idea of inspiration and intellectual stimulation. The art tour gives the audience a chance to thrive beyond what is just mundane and find elevation through each artist’s creativity, and an opportunity to collect extraordinary art.”

“Illustrating botanicals became a passion of mine after studying the works of 16th century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Drawing plants, flowers, and insects, I aim to involve the viewer in another dimension of thought. SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART

Tina Barney: Homecoming

June 21–September 7

Tina Barney: Homecoming features photographs Barney made between 1976 and 1980, when the internationally renowned artist was living in Ketchum, Idaho, and taking photography classes at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (now Sun Valley Museum of Art). Made with a Pentax 35mm camera, the images document the daily life and activities of the people closest to Barney and are representative of a key stage in her trajectory as an artist, before she began

working with a large-format camera to make carefully composed and directed photographs. In contrast, the images in this exhibition, which were made in Sun Valley, Rhode Island, and New York, are more spontaneous. But like her later photographs, these early works illuminate the subtle interactions and psychological tensions that occur among family and friends even in moments of leisure—at weddings and on squash courts, at the beach, waterpark, or a ski race.

Rob Davis: Records

June 21–September 7

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1970, the artist Rob Davis has spent the past six years making paintings that mine his childhood memories— specifically those from ages five to eight, a time of “magical thinking” among children. His hyperrealist images depict empty kitchen tables, living rooms, and porches, as well as piles of records and plants in macrame holders. While Davis’s paintings emerge from his own lived experience, they possess a universal resonance for all viewers familiar with the 1970s. His interiors and (object) portraits alike evoke the era’s aesthetics and technology with vivid accuracy but without nostalgia.

Steven Lee Adams, Jack Braman, John Horejs, Shanna Kunz, Lori McNee, Robert Moore, Robbie Moore, and Garth Williams

33rd annual Plein Air Exhibition July 29-August 2

Early Summer by Robert Moore Oil on canvas

En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color, and movement into their works.

Kneeland Gallery’s exciting annual plein air event allows you to get involved in a variety of fun activities involving eight of our premier plein air painters. First and foremost, we encourage you to interact with the artists—they really do love the attention! Attend a variety of events in addition to the paint out, including a plein air workshop with father and son Robert and Robbie Moore, a demonstration, and the gallery walk where you will have the opportunity to chat with all the artists and view their work from the week. Most of all, become a collector— there is no better way to support these hard-working artists than to add a painting to your collection. While the artwork represents a mix of subject matter and styles, all the paintings offer a true sense of place and your meaningful remembrance of our beautiful surroundings.

Jason Wheatley

Language of the Birds

Jason Wheatley’s exhibition, Language of the Birds, features dreamlike still-life paintings that explore the relationship between fantastical ideas and recognizable imagery. Embracing the illustrative style of John James Audubon’s famed avian paintings, Wheatley deploys realist and absurdist sensibilities in his still-life works. Each canvas is filled with metaphors and riddles, demonstrating a contemporary sense of wit, whimsey, and folly. Painted both from memory and life, these classical rendered oil paintings are filled with delightful oddities and an element of surprise. Jason Wheatley will be in attendance for Gallery Walk on August 2.

Flávia Junquiera

The Absurd and the Grace Brazilian artist Flávia Junquiera’s poetic photographs are carefully staged and produced as odes to monumental architecture and the ephemeral essence of childhood. Junquiera creates site-specific installations that are dreamlike. and playful. Grand theaters are filled with balloons, a lone carousel horse sans rider intrudes upon an ornate library, balloons and bubbles litter and float above the Parque Lage in Rio de Janerio. There is a sense of joy as Junqueria pays homage to the imagined universe that dwells in childhood.

James Austin Murray On the Return

On the Return features new work by painter James Austin Murray, who continues to demand that we put aside preconceived perceptions of light and dark and explore their evolving roles in our lives. With self-constructed broom-like brushes, Murray physically rakes, scrapes, and sweeps thick layers of jet-black paint across broad surfaces of canvas, forcing flat surfaces to seemingly ripple, contract, and pulse. Each painting is informed by years of innovative practice, tempered by the fickle nature of wet oil paint. Defying the limitations of paint and canvas, Austin Murray’s work invites infinite possibilities. Through simple means, he achieves a visual complexity that unfolds fully when one stands before his canvases.

Storytelling

Billy Schenck has been painting in his reductivist paint-by-numbers style since the 1960s. The first formal art show Schenck saw as an 18-year-old was Warhol’s “Campbell Soup” collection. Subsequently, after working for Warhol the following year, Schenck notes Warhol’s Pop Art style as an early influence in his work. In Schenck’s artistic version of a mythic “New West,” he satirizes the surrounding universal truth and lies.

Broschofsky Galleries is pleased to show a new body of Schenck’s work alongside a selection of pop art images from Andy Warhol’s “Cowboys and Indians” portfolio (1986). Exploring the West through myths and nostalgia, the images were Warhol’s last major project before he died in 1987. The works represent an important milestone in both Warhol’s late career and the history of contemporary Western art. This show will compare these two recognized pioneers of Pop Art and their differing styles and interpretations of the American West.

More Usual Suspects

Also showing is a new selection of large-scale photographs by famed artist David Yarrow.

For over two decades, British photographer David Yarrow has created evocative images of some of the world’s most iconic personalities, sporting moments, and endangered wildlife. In his ever-evolving series, Storytelling, Yarrow takes his work to the next level through tales of adventure and misadventure, often utilizing iconic backdrops, recognizable characters, and trained animals. The artist’s

low-editioned works are available in two sizes: standard and large or more aptly described as big and huge. Whether poignant, dramatic, or provocative, the images are always epic.

Broschofsky Galleries also displays works from other gallery artists, including Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Edward Curtis, Ewoud de Groot, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Theodore Villa, and more.

Through August 17

OCHI presents Sonnets, a solo exhibition of new paintings by New York-based artist Andy Mister, a debut solo presentation at the gallery. Mister’s paintings of cut flowers in water-filled vessels merge the ephemerality of traditional drawing techniques with the physicality of painting. Mister’s paintings are intimate, both small in stature and offering insight into the personal nature of the work—Mister recently moved with his wife and their two young children to a town near the Susquehanna River in upstate New York, a change of pace from city life. Immersed in the outdoors, Mister watches his children navigate the natural world with curiosity and joy.

While previous paintings relied on found imagery, the paintings in Sonnets are all based on real flower arrangements made by all members of the Mister family. The artist’s kids choose flowers at the local farmer’s market and place them around the house in whatever vessel they can find—a jam jar used for turpentine, a glass left behind, or a small vase bought secondhand.

Mister affirms, “A lot of my work in the past was about my relationship to art history consumer culture. Now, as a father and a husband, the focus of my life has changed as I’m responsible for these two little beings and helping them navigate the world. I am trying, as it were, to bring something new into being instead of copying something which was already there.”

And we are green, greener than the hill, where flowers grow and the sun shines still Through August 17

OCHI is pleased to present And we are green, greener than the hill, where flowers grow and the sun shines still, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Montana-based artist James Chronister, a debut solo presentation with the gallery. And we are green, greener than the hill, where flowers grow and the sun shines still features James Chronister’s deeply intricate, monochromatic landscape paintings. Composing straight-on images of dense winter forests, close-ups of individual leaves, and aerial images of flora, Chronister begins his process by photographing the environment surrounding his home in Missoula, Montana. After digitally distorting contrast, focus, and tones, Chronister moves from computer to canvas, where minuscule individual marks reveal scrupulous technical application. Onto a white or carefully hued off-white background, Chronister meticulously recreates source photographs by repeatedly applying, shaping, and erasing black oil paint. Precise dry brushing and stippling techniques achieve texture, depth, and refinements of form. The monochrome palette, unique in each painting, lends a unifying quality to Chronister’s work—distinguishing his paintings from realism despite his faithful adherence to the source photographs.

Maggie Shafran

Maggie Shafran demonstrates her technical virtuosity using pencil, charcoal, and thread to construct hyperrealist still-life drawings evocative of 18th-century Flemish “flower painting.” Shafran inserts her narrative into a long tradition of depicting what is not (or no longer) living and cannot move. Also known as “Nature Morte,” still life painting can serve to remind the viewer of their mortality by dramatically emphasizing flowers, plants, or food amid decay. She emphasizes the paradox of attempting to preserve the ephemeral and discovering divine beauty in the outlandish.

Pegan Brooke

Pegan Brooke is an abstract oil painter working in a minimalist style and monochromatic palette. She mixes metallic pigments with her medium, adding a rich sheen and texture to each staccato brushstroke. Brooke carefully organizes her compositions into grids, giving structure to hundreds of reflective swaths of paint. These paintings are conceived with meditative repetition, organically evoking the sense of light falling on water or snow. Pegan Brooke’s work is held in public and private collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and U.S. Embassies in Sri Lanka and Bolivia.

Michael Gregory

Michael Gregory’s paintings depict the iconic American landscape as a terrain where space seems infinite, where light can shine in the sky uninterrupted by the debris of civilization. These paintings harken back to another time, yet are strikingly contemporary. Stripped down to the essence of structure, a barn sets the stage for a sense of moody nostalgia and memory. Gregory’s skies are as important as the land and the structures in his paintings. Sometimes the atmosphere is ominous and stormy, while others are peaceful and filled with golden light. There is an interesting tension created by a style that is simultaneously hyperrealist yet exorbitant in scale and color. This exhibition will feature new paintings by the artist, who has work included in the collections of the Boise Art Museum, Idaho; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Denver Art Museum, Colorado; Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, Indiana; San Jose Museum of Art, California, and numerous private collections.

Gwynn Murrill

Gwynn Murrill’s life-sized bronze sculptures depict regal animals such as horses, bears, coyotes, and eagles. The artist stylizes her subjects into purified forms, emphasizing primal characteristics and transmogrifying each animal’s unique spirit. Murrill simultaneously distinguishes, yet obscures, by sculpting figures that are at once based in realism and fiercely enigmatic. Murrill expertly transforms such heavy and static material as bronze into figures stirred with subtle movement and dynamic energy. A few of many of Murrill’s accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Prix di Roma Fellowship, and a Purchase Award from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Ezra Siegel FOLKTALES

Through August 24

Opening Reception Friday, August 2, 5-7:30pm

Chicago-based artist Ezra Siegel has spent over 30 years exploring form, shape, and paint surfaces to create something that is both simple and complex. A self-taught artist, Siegel comes from an artistic family. His father, Arthur Siegel, is a world-renowned photographer, and his mother, Irene Siegel, is a multi-media artist. Majoring in art history in college, Siegel moved to Italy to study the Old Masters and then continued his artistic pursuits, living abroad in Portugal for years.

At first glance, his work suggests a minimalist approach, but upon examination, it reveals something more varied and expressive. With multiple layers of washes and thin paint, Siegel’s work is full of nuanced color and tone, in addition to fluctuations and imperfections within the background, outlines, and interior shapes.

For his solo exhibition, Folktales, Siegel aims “to paint simple and direct feelings, eliminating unnecessary detail to make the expression both personal and universal. My hope is to take the viewer on a journey to bring together the young and old within ourselves.”

Anna Kruhelska is a visual artist and practicing architect based in Lodz, Poland. She has worked as an architect on a vast array of major projects in Russia, Malaysia, and the UK, all of which have formed her understanding of form, symmetry, and space and given her knowledge that has allowed her to cultivate a congruous and innovative contemporary art practice.

Kruhelska focuses on abstract, three-dimensional paper wall reliefs that work by reflecting light—with the overall

effect depending on the viewer’s perspective. The central concept of her work is the interplay between light and shade, contrast, color, and the repetitive patterns created by the folds and hollows in the work. Inspired by minimalism, architectural composition, and geometry, Anna creates clean, crisp, often white-on-white framed wall installations. These artworks are beautifully presented and often work alongside one another in formation, so although not officially diptychs, very often, the artworks appear to flow from one frame to the next.

FLY SUN

“ e majority of businesses in this valley rely on a healthy ow of visitors on a yearly basis. I, like many others, am able to raise a family here because of those visitors. Fly Sun Valley Alliance takes a very calculated approach in providing more air service to bring people here from all over the country without inundating our guest services. e increased air service options also allow many people to live here, who otherwise could not because they have to travel for work. I’m proud to partner with FSVA through the Realtors for Air program because they provide a major tool for me to have the privilege to watch my girls grow up in one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

— Luc McCann, McCann-Daech-Fenton Realtors

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, and summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this summer include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams and garlic, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh Alaskan halibut, seared ahi salad, spicy sesame noodle bowl and fresh Willapa Bay steamer clams, to name just a few.

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and summer evenings on the outdoor terrace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

SUN VALLEY CULINARY INSTITUTE

At the Sun Valley Culinary Institute (SVCI), we believe in bringing the world’s cuisines to our community. This August, we are excited to present a culinary experience of Asian delights with the return of Thai Chef Pranee Halvorsen and Chinese Chef Kian Lam Kho. From August 13 to 18, get ready for a series of classes and dinners that will elevate your sense of Asian cuisine.

These culinary experiences are more than learning new food techniques and embracing cuisine by renowned chefs. They support a future-generation workforce and provide a foundation in the culinary arts for students attending SVCI. It is part of SVCI’s curriculum to provide experiences with prominent chefs in support of the school and Sun Valley’s growing culinary scene.

As we look to fall, SVCI will graduate another class and welcome students in September with its new Culinary Director, Jorge de la Torre, who brings 20 years of progressive experience in culinary arts academics, which includes 15 years as Dean of Culinary Education at Johnson & Wales University in Denver.

Attending SVCI’s events, dinners, and classes is not only about enjoying a unique culinary experience. It is

about directly contributing to SVCI’s mission to advance culinary education and workforce development in Sun Valley and beyond. Your participation makes you an integral part of this cause. Visit the SVCI website to reserve your spot for upcoming events, dinners, and classes and to learn more about supporting SVCI’s Student Scholarship Fund. Make sure to stop by SVCI’s Open House on Friday, August 30, from 4 to 9pm.
