EB: Why the term “wealth planning” instead of “financial planning”?

A Conversation with Robertson Stephens: What is a Wealth Plan and Why Do I Need One?

EB: How did you get into wealth planning? MF: I began buying stocks at the age of 14 and forecasted how much I could accumulate over time. Being a novice at trading I also saw how quickly wealth could be lost! After reading a few books I began to understand the concepts of investing for the long term, compound growth, taxes and insurance. Trained as an engineer I had the desire to optimize growth and preservation of wealth. Wealth management seemed like a natural fit and the complexi ties and interdependencies of wealth planning, especially the estate and tax aspect, were challenges I looked forward to solving. I focused my efforts on High and Ultra High Net Worth families and Family Offices as they face the most sophisticated challenges. I realized that I’d never help find a cure for cancer but, after family and health, people are most concerned about money. After over 20 years in the business, I’m still fulfilled by helping families have a great experience with their wealth.

MF: Wealth planning is an enhanced version of financial planning that allows for clients’ behavioral preferences and biases to permeate and influence the process. We find wealth planning is a methodology better suited to how High and Ultra High Net Worth families like to operate. Clients are motivated to focus on their immediate goals and needs first. From there we triage, and address challenges assessed as a priority until the entire client’s financial situ ation is deeply vetted. We iterate rapidly and present an online interactive ‘strategic’ plan before or soon after they become a client. Our planning tool allows for adjustments in real time and to demonstrate the impact of our recommendations or to evaluate client requested scenarios. It’s deeply collaborative and this allows the client to clearly weigh the impact of potential decisions and select an amenable pathway forward as we build their comprehensive wealth plan. Wealth planning tends to lead to quicker positive outcomes, and, because of this, clients are motivated to act and eager to tackle the next financial challenge. Vigilance of the plan is necessary for its success over the long-term and we design a customized monitoring process to help us keep on track.

EB: How do you approach wealth planning?

EB: How can I get started?

MF: Our process at Robertson Ste phens is very collaborative. We, first, “triage” and focus on the individual or family’s highest priorities, gather ing the necessary information. Then, we seek opportunities to improve the probability of success by developing solutions to over come obstacles and threats while accounting for client preferences. Together with our clients, we decide which opportunities to take advantage of and how best to ad dress obstacles and threats. Once everyone agrees, we move forward in the implementation of the plan.

MF: We believe that an integrated approach, combining analytics and behavior, is the most effective way of creat ing the best possible wealth solution for our clients. By combining the analytical and behavioral aspects we can understand your personal preferences toward wealth and collaborate with you to try to achieve the best outcomes.

EB: Why should everyone have a wealth plan?

Our goal at Robertson Stephens is to understand client values, personal preferences, and finances to develop a cohesive wealth plan. We under stand needs, objectives, and aspirations are unique. We believe that wealth planning can reduce inherent systemic risk that exists when making de cisions. We aim to mitigate these risks by providing clients with strategies and opportunities to help meet short-term and long-term objectives. We then help tailor the client’s investment program, which aims to achieve everyone’s planning objectives without taking undue risks. We also keep abreast of regulation changes, shifts in income, estate tax and market volatility so that we can present plan ning opportunities that may improve outcomes. At the end of the day, we want clients to have peace of mind, creating a margin of safety by continuously monitoring and evaluating their plan’s resilience to adverse market, economic, tax and regulatory conditions.

MF: Many high and ultra-high net worth families may not realize they can benefit from a wealth plan, at least ini tially. How much of your assets will go to heirs and charity if any, what’s the best way to accomplish this transition given your values? Are your investments aligned with lifestyle, legacy, philanthropic objectives, and time horizon? Are there strategies and opportunities to mitigate income and estate taxes across the family? Are your assets adequately pro tected? These are some of the many questions a wealth plan can shed light on and help to make informed decisions, each family’s situation is different.

BLAIR BAKER was born and raised in Sun Valley, Idaho. She currently lives in New York City with her adorable dog, Roo. Although far from home, she keeps Sun Valley close to her heart through assorted Idaho memorabilia and impressing her friends through her stories of adventures in the great outdoors. Originally from Connecticut, LILY MARTIN attended Gettysburg College, studying art studio and art history. She has a master’s degree in modern/contemporary art and the market. Flying to and from Sun Valley during the fall season just became much easier with the addition of extended flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles in September, twice-weekly flights to Seattle, and daily flights to Denver and Salt Lake City.

Delta Air Lines continues to offer convenient service schedules for SUN travelers with three daily nonstop Salt Lake City (SLC) flights year-round, although the schedule will be reduced to two daily flights October through mid-December due to system-wide pilot shortages. Alaska Airlines also now provides nonstop Seattle (SEA) flights year-round, with twice weekly flights on Thursday and Sunday from September 8 through mid-December. And in October, Alaska will begin flying their Seattle route with E175 regional jets, replacing the older Q400 turboprop planes, making SUN an all-regional jet commercial service airport for the first time in its history.

The mission of the nonprofit Fly Sun Valley Alliance is to improve air service to Sun Valley for the benefit of the community. The key community partners in FSVA’s air service development efforts include the Sun Valley Air Service Board, the Sun Valley Resort, and Friedman Memorial Airport. In addition, Visit Sun Valley is a key strategic partner in marketing air service.



In addition, United Airlines now offers daily nonstop Denver (DEN) flight service all year, a significant enhancement for year-round connectivity to this major United Airlines hub.

“These extensions to our air service for fall throughout the year will provide more options for residents and visitors,” says Fly Sun Valley Alliance Director Carol Waller. Waller notes that staffing shortages remain an ongoing challenge for airlines, and SUN is fortunate to maintain good air service levels while other airports have lost service.

For September, United Airlines is extending its nonstop Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) flights to run twice weekly, on Wednesday and Sunday, from September 8 to 25, instead of ending on Labor Day.

Sun Valley Tour de Force hosted its fifth annual three-day car event, July 21-23, 2022, to support The Hunger Coalition, a local nonprofit serving community members who are experiencing food insecurity. This year, the event raised $600,000, a sizable increase in donation compared to the $175,000 donation it made in 2021. In fact, it’s one of the single most significant donations to The Hunger Coalition to date, outside of the capital campaign.

“A donation of this size is absolutely transformational,” says The Hunger Coalition Director of Philanthropy Krista Felton. “It’s about a fifth of our annual budget and enough to cover the cost of all our children’s programs, plus our farm, for a year! Knowing that we don’t need to worry about these important programs is a huge relief.” 

“It’s truly hard to believe it’s been five years since we presented $16,000 to our first beneficiary, Idaho BaseCamp. Through the support of our sponsors, partners, drivers, and the community, we can deliver over half a million dollars today. The Hemingway Mosaic, by local artist, Sue Dumke, looms large, piquing the interest of anyone who comes across it, intrigued by the amalgamation of many photos to reveal Hemingway’s portrait. The Hemingway Memorial serves as a starting point for hikes that boast breathtaking views of the Wood River Valley that Hemingway held so close to his heart. A plaque at his memorial reads, “Best of all, he loved the fall, the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods. Leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills. The high blue windless skies, now he will be a part of them forever.”

The multi-day conference, which is being held from September 8-10 this year, is focused on the posthumously published Islands in the Stream and Hemingway’s time on the Gulf Stream. It is a famously challenging work to read, and the conference will serve as a helping hand in unpacking this incredible piece of literature. The conference features speakers such as Paul Hendrickson, author of Hemingway’s Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost; Mark P. Ott, author of A Sea of Change: Ernest Hemingway and the Gulf Stream, a Contextual Biography; Karen Osborn, Research Zoologist with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History STREAMCODE project; as well as presentations by Dr. Clyde Moneyhun and Dr. Stacey Guill of Boise State University; and a screening of the 1977 film adaptation of Islands in the Stream. The packed weekend also includes riveting discussions led by the Valley’s very own Phil Huss, known for his passion for Hemingway in the high school classroom, which has culminated in his book, Hemingway’s Sun Valley: Local Stories behind his Code, Characters, and Crisis. The extensive array of scholars brings differing experiences and perspectives to color Islands in the Stream, allowing the seminar to come alive for all readers.

Every year, a group of Hemingway scholars, die-hard fans, aficionados, and even just the curious gather for the Ernest Hemingway Seminar hosted by The Community Library.

“What makes this conference special,” says Programs and Education Director Martha Williams, “is that this seminar is for everyone, not just scholars.” Occurring annually since 2005, 2022 marks the second year of this conference in person after a hiatus in 2022. It offers both in-person and online access, ensuring that anyone can attend from wherever they are located.

The 2021 seminar focused on Hemingway’s time in Africa, for which the Library welcomed a guest exhibit from the Special Collections and Archives at Boise State University’s Albertsons Library. Ernest’s luggage in the Library’s collection often features the crest of his Cuba home, Finca Vigía. This year’s seminar explores Hemingway’s time on and relationship with the Gulf Stream.

As an audience, our thirst for stories is greater than ever. And the offerings are too, with a new show, series, podcast, film, or episodic being released seemingly every other day. This August, over 20 new star-studded episodics are set to be released and we haven’t even had time to binge last month’s menu. Do we even want to? Or is it just FOMO? Now seems like the time to get back to basics. Back to where our love of story and performance started.

American theatre has made reinvention a routine to stay relevant with new generational tastes, (and pandemics), and to maintain their place as a prominent part of the modern entertainment landscape. Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) refocuses antiquated playwright development practices, fostering new voices in theatre, and stands out as a unique addition to arts organizations in the Wood River Valley. In collaboration with The Community Library and The Argyros Performing Arts Center, the Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency offers one playwright annually $10,000 to foster a single project from a nascent idea to develop a new work over the course of a year. At the bookends of the yearlong residency, the playwright spends up to a month in Ketchum, at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House and community member housing.

“The idea for this has been percolating for many years,” says SVPR Artistic Director, John M. Baker. A dramaturg who’s been heavily involved in supporting playwrights and developing new plays for over 15 years, Baker knew it was imperative to start something that he could shape to meet the needs of playwrights today. “I saw a need in the American theatre to create a nimble organization that is able to continually meet the needs of writers,” he says. Once paired with Jonathan Kane, Artistic Director of Sawtooth Productions and a local producer for the past 25 years, sparks began to fly. “It grew out of both of our desires to create opportunities for theatre artists to generate new work and bold theatre experiences for the By Elizabeth Westwood David Cale performing We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.

During his residency, Cale birthed a solo play that is set in the Wood River Valley titled Blue Cowboy. “We were hopeful that artists coming to Idaho would be inspired by the setting, the Hemingway House, and the community,” explains Baker. “We’re thrilled that David was so taken by the community and environment and just ran with it.”

Like many other nonprofit organizations and small businesses, COVID has taken a toll on the resources that playwrights have historically relied on to write and develop new work for the stage. “The pandemic has truly impacted new play development organizations,” shares Baker. “Several major nonprofits that specialized in developing new work have been shuttered due to the pandemic, leaving lots of writers without artistic homes. We saw a real need to create a space for playwrights to ideate and write, and we have leaned into the idea of being a small, nimble organization that allows us to meet the specific needs of each playwright.

But once I was in Ketchum, for me a kind of magic happened,” says Cale. “The play I’ve written would have never come about, or occurred to me, without the Residency, and the opportunity of experiencing first-hand this breathtakingly beautiful, spiritually stirring part of the country. It inspired my imagination and creativity, in ways I could never have foreseen, and thus my new play wholly takes place in Ketchum, Hailey, Stanley, and Sun Valley.”

One might say that the Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency’s mission to preserve and evolve the stage play is Quixotic since the pandemic took us away from inperson performances. Why not just watch that new Apple TV show? But without running the risk of being overly dramatic, we only must ask one question. Heard of Bill Shakespeare? The SVPR wants to remind audiences of our origins, not by putting on yet another charming rendition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but by offering living playwrights a range of resources to write and develop new work for the stage, reminding everyone that this ancient medium still has stories to tell and artists who bleed for it.

Rob, a sanctioned triathlete and UCLA graduate, was the first UCLA undergraduate accredited as assistant physiology lab director under Dr. Brett Dolezal. He was on a path to medical school when he visited his brother in Ketchum more than a year ago. “We envisioned a fitness and center that integrates clinical-level exercise, cardiorespiratory, and body composition testing. However, with the cutting-edge technology and methods we have implemented, and with my accreditation, we can do a full host of tests to pinpoint exactly what a client needs,” says Rob. Rob is accredited to execute the physiological testing and analyses developed and refined over multiple decades at UCLA’s UCFit, Exercise Physiology Research Lab (EPRL), a highly specialized myriad of testing to assess one’s true physical health and performance and highlight how to improve. Widely known as the top exercise physiology laboratory, UCLA’s EPRL and Dr. Dolezal have partnered with PeakFit. The shelter’s 50th anniversary celebration is a thank-you

Anyone who has utilized adoption services and the many programs Mountain Humane offers knows the incredible resources it provides the Wood River Valley community. It is not just any ordinary animal shelter—if that even exists—it is a place of love, well-being, and humanity for our furry, four-legged loved ones, and the occasional rabbit, ferret, guinea pig, or “pocket pet.”

For many, adopting a dog or cat is welcoming a new family member. The pride and joy pets bring to anyone’s life are priceless gifts and give a lifetime of memories. It is obvious how much we love our pets in the Wood River Valley. They are everywhere, welcomed in most places, and cared for by many. They are part of our mountain life and here to stay.

Celebrating half a century of providing dogs and cats to our valley’s residents and beyond, Mountain Humane, located in Croy Canyon slightly west of Hailey, honors the heritage the shelter carries forth from its days as the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley now known as Mountain Humane, a “no-kill” animal shelter.

Providing necessary services and community support allows Mountain Humane to be the gold standard of animal shelters, especially in the Wood River Valley, where more families than not own a dog or cat.

Mountain Humane can have 80 to 100 animals in their care at anytime. When animals arrive from either overcrowded shelters, as strays from animal control, pickups from police officers, brought in from community good Samaritans, or as surrenders because it’s the only option, Mountain Humane’s door is open. It’s not just a place for a cat or dog to have food and shelter. It provides veterinarian services for healing and well-being, a food bank, and behavior training with counseling and classes.

Dr. Jack Amen, a retired veterinarian from Fairfield, offers years of experience and a great appreciation for shelter medicine—especially the spay/neuter program. In addition, local veterinarian and Mountain Humane board member, Scott Acker, is a valued resource.”

“We would love to operate our medical clinic five or six days a week,” says Mountain Humane Board President Sally Onetto. “We’re actively seeking to add another veterinarian to our staff. However, there is a vet shortage throughout the country. Shelter medicine is specialized and very rewarding.

Mountain Humane was built for tomorrow. It’s near the largest population center in the Wood River Valley, close to Hailey’s Main Street, making it accessible for volunteers to help with dog-walking, community service for high school students, and community meetings and gatherings.

Soon after the pandemic arrived and changed life as we know it, Mountain Humane adapted. New policies, safety standards, and providing more free pet food for those in “No matter how great a community people had lived in before they moved to the Wood River Valley, they never had a place like Mountain Humane.”

In 2021, Mountain Humane cared for 2,707 animals, 2,800 vaccinations were provided, 1,024 spay or neuter surgeries were performed, 100 dental procedures were completed, and 512 animals were microchipped. But that’s not all. Mountain Humane rose to the occasion of keeping people in good spirits throughout the pandemic, helping pets stay with their families, or bringing a new pet to their homes. With expanded kennel space and an army of foster families, in 2021, Mountain Humane provided 222 animals transferred from high-kill shelters with a place to live and be matched with their forever families.

Mountain Humane answers the call to help ease overcrowding and lack of resources in rural shelters through the Idaho Coalition of Animal Transfer Partners (ICATP).

“Being first responders for cats and dogs was part of going through COVID,” says Mountain Humane Executive Director Annie McCauley. “Animal welfare best practices evolved during the pandemic. One change was adoptionby-appointment to give prospective adopters time with a trained adoption counselor and the animal they are interested in bringing into their home. We take matching pets to families very seriously. The result is well-prepared adopters and fewer adoption returns.”

“When overcrowded shelters in rural Idaho need help, Mountain Humane has the space, resources, and medical

crisis were a few things that happened immediately. Other outcomes took the form of a more extensive pet foster program and short-term pet boarding for those struggling with medical or housing issues.

Behavior issues, veterinarian services, vaccination clinics on Monday and Fridays, dog training classes, and outreach services were fully functioning as pet owners emerged from the pandemic, and 16,120 pounds of pet food was distributed to 141 Blaine County families. The

First and foremost was a shelter offering the animals the best living and care operations. The building also was built to handle over 150 animals allowing for transfer from crowded or high-kill shelters.

As a community center, Mountain Humane serves as a space for many of the Valley’s nonprofits, that use it for various reasons. “Mountain Humane’s collaboration with the Valley’s nonprofits is an opportunity for all,” says McCauley. “We’re involved with the Wood River Land Trust for land conservation, The Hunger Coalition with pet food, and The Advocates to help pets who need a temporary home. It’s also one of the few organizations where the entire family can be involved. Whether during the holidays, a grade school project, or other events that present checks and donations to us, it’s a nonprofit that can offer and teach kids valuable lessons while connecting to what is going on.”

An added service to the Wood River Valley is the Barkin’ Thrift Store, located in the 1934 Rialto Hotel on Main Street in Hailey, which serves thousands of shoppers. It’s also a drop-off for donations and services for pet food distribution.

“It’s a happy place to be with the animals and the people who care for them,” says Marketing Manager Heidi Hayes. “We like to fill each day with scheduled play dates and puppy love.”

“It’s effective, clean, and organized thanks to the brilliance of Heather Lewis’s design and construction,” says former Board Member Dan Drackett. “It’s no accident that you pass by the kittens first. No matter how great a community people had lived in before they moved to the Wood River Valley, they never had a place like Mountain Humane.”

In 2021, the store grossed $377,491 for animals in need. “The building not only has workforce housing, it also provides a great community service, which has been a savior,” says Mountain Humane Board Member Christine Ferguson. “It’s been a blessing, and the staff works hard to stock the floor with fun merchandise that meets the needs of our customers.”

More service is seen in the army of volunteers who are all a significant part of Mountain Humane’s function, operation, and success, from playing with cats, washing dishes, dog walking, and several volunteering every day—it all makes a difference.

“Our goal is that the entire community knows they are welcome to Mountain Humane, but more important is to thank the community and celebrate the dogs and cats in our lives no matter where they were adopted, with our 50th anniversary celebration,” says Onetto. South of town, Redfish Lake Lodge is a slice of heaven once the peak season rush has ended and families are back to work and school schedules. Temperatures remain perfect, and there’s little precipitation. It’s a quiet and beautiful time to enjoy the lake and this historic Idaho mountain lodge. Fall hours of operation are 10am-9pm. This includes the hiker boat shuttle, the marina, bike rentals, restaurant, rustic lounge, general store, and lodging, ranging from family cabins to guest suites. With the season’s bright colors, hiking and mountain biking are even more dramatic than in summer. There are dozens of trails branching out from the Lodge. Plus, you can take the Redfish Lake Shuttle boat across the lake for access to more.

Their marina has boats, kayaks, SUPs, canoe rentals, lake tours, and a great beach. So, keep treading through the seasons. There’s still plenty to do and countless adventures—horseback riding, boating, swimming, and on-site dining available for all Redfish Properties guests.

The Redfish live music scene culminates with Ryan Curtis on Friday, September 2, when he and his band bring a unique brand of high-desert twang and Idaho honky-tonk. On September 4, Douglas Cameron features blistering blues-rock guitar sounds and upbeat bluegrass fiddle. If you plan a visit to the lake on the last official day of summer, join the resort staff for one of their favorite traditions, a team swim. Nothing like a dip in the lake on September 21 to fire up your soul. Redfish officially closes Sunday, October 16, 2022. It’s already fall, y’all!

Redfish Lake is also an excellent place to check out the Sockeye migration to their spawning waters in the Sawtooth Valley Basin. From late July, the Sockeye return and continue through late September and early October. A great place to start looking for salmon is Redfish Lake Creek, from the point where it empties into the Salmon River. The bridge over the creek offers good viewing in its shallow, clear waters. You can find Kokanee—the landlocked form of Sockeye—spawning in Fishhook Creek into early September, making this an excellent time to wander along the Fishhook Creek Nature Walk, which leads out of the parking lot at Redfish Lake Lodge. The boardwalk trail offers several fantastic vantage points for viewing the bright red fish from above.

Latham Interiors brings intentional design to Sun Valley and beyond

Those are the words that Sarah Latham uses to describe the aesthetic of her firm, Latham Interiors (LI). This style comes through in their designs, from sleek, progressive finishes with natural elements to refined and detailed vintage pieces that reflect the Sincehomeowner.2015,LIhas been working with clients in the Sun Valley area, Pacific Northwest, and East Coast to imagine unique and personalized spaces.

Growing up around Lake Tahoe made moving to a mountain community a homecoming. And Latham loves this community. “It never ceases to amaze me, the love and support that comes from people I have known for years or who are visiting for the first time,” she says.

Latham started her design career in 2002 at Fisher Weisman Design in San Francisco, a firm she still considers her industry mentor. But she was designing spaces long before those days.

Latham then moved to Lake Tahoe and worked with Bentley Interior Design. In Tahoe, she’d meet her future husband Zach, a Hailey native who would bring her to the Wood River Valley.

“I’ve always had an underlying passion for designing,” she says. “From an early age, I was playing with paint colors and organizing rooms, much to my mother’s dismay.”

Sarah Latham has been designing homes in the Wood River Valley since 2006, and launched Latham Interiors in 2015. Latham Interiors works closely with clients to create spaces that will be fully and beautifully lived in.

From spatial planning in drawings and renderings to finish materials, plumbing and appliance specifications, lighting, window shading, and furniture through to final installation and styling, the LI team handles every aspect of the design.

LI projects range from new construction to remodels, residential to commercial, and focus on the quality of the work instead of the scale. Designing an entire home allows Latham and her team to “get a complete vision across,” but their vision also shines through in small spaces such as yachts and sheep wagons.

Each project begins with getting to know the client, not only understanding the scope of work but also how the family lives. “How they will function within a well-thoughtthrough space is choreographed with their needs in mind,” says “EveryLatham.project is a new challenge, and we live for it,” Latham continues. “No one lives or works exactly the same way, so getting to know our clients, their needs and interests, and providing design options that best meet those areas is always a pleasure.”

In Ketchum, Latham began working with RLB Architecture, running their interior design division for ten years before branching out on her own. She established White Canvas Designs in 2007, then Latham Interiors in 2015. The business has been buzzing ever since. The firm has won Best of the Valley every year since its inception. The team at LI continuously expands, employing a diversified staff including designers, purchasing, marketing, and bookkeeping.

Whether imagining a new space or embarking on a renovation, LI sees any project as a clean slate from its early stages. New construction allows for specific opportunities in the design, says Latham, but remodels host their own unique challenges that turn into amazing details in the final design.

“Everyone face to face is willing to lend a helping hand,” shares Latham. “Professionally, we see tremendous growth in our area, and providing our design services has helped many home and business owners feel proud of their place within our community.”

It’s all in the process, she says. Designing doesn’t just involve understanding furniture but also spaces, construction, electrical needs, and materials. How long will materials last in any particular application? What’s their general cost? What will be available when it’s time for the contractor to install? How to get things to our little valley? And the fun part, how to pull any space together aesthetically?

And Latham’s village keeps growing. Like most businesses in the valley, winter and summer are LI’s busiest seasons, but fall and spring are increasingly busy as the community’s living dynamics have shifted. And during COVID, this industry that relies on touch, feel, texture, and conversations shifted just as others did.

LI also launched an online store in 2015, where shoppers drawn to LI’s aesthetic can peruse collections curated by their team for living, bedroom, office, outdoor spaces, and “Wemore.haveso many requests to be involved on client projects,” says Latham, “that we found having the online store was another way for our admirers to shop items we love even though we may not have time to be involved immediately on their design project.”

“That each day is never the same,” says Latham. “We are constantly moving and involved in many aspects of the design-build process. One minute we are working with a plumber, and the next, we are working with a custom furniture maker in Denmark.”

“Being with people face to face has changed tremendously,” says Latham. “We visited more often with clients, vendors, and industry partners.” Yet, her team has mastered having long-distance relationships and working in intimate spaces in an industry grounded in sensory details.

The collections, as well as full LI designs, are inspired by current designs and experiences. Curves, color, and texture are some of the inspirations the Latham team is building from these days.

The LI team also absorbs inspiration from near and far. They travel to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and even recently to Paris to scour flea markets, attend design shows, and study historical buildings. Even the local Sun Valley wildflower season brings its own inspirations. And looking ahead? LI is currently working on building and designing its new office space. For now, you’ll find them in the Kneebone Building at the corner of Washington Avenue and Fifth Street in Ketchum. Come spring 2023, Latham and her team look forward to sharing their expanded studio.

Alexander Rohrig’s new oil painting series draws upon a wealth of spiritual, intellectual, and natural sources of inspiration. Not just capturing a romanticized version of pastoral life, these complex compositions illustrate farm life from the artist’s perspective, which is chaotic, violent, noisy, and full of hard work. Incorporating subtle references to art historical and biblical allegory, these paintings explore human interaction with the natural world and our place in it. “All my work draws you into the story I am telling. There’s visceral energy displayed in the hard work between animals and people. It transcends the commonplace and transports you to the power that holds the universe together,” says the artist.

Jennifer Markowitz Jennifer Markowitz is a textile artist presenting her work for the first time at Gail Severn Gallery. Certain works included in the show were previously featured in Reckoning and Resilience: North Carolina Art Now at the Nasher Museum at Duke University. Markowitz uses silk panels and personal garments as her canvas to create images and text pulled from memories, traumas, confusions, artifacts, and maps. Markowitz deconstructs, embroiders, and stiffens the fabrics, with each garment revealing its history. The artist explains, “I am now transfixed by encounters with absence and presence. Specifically, I’m gripped by the mysterious traces our bodies leave behind within garments and bed linens and how embroidery can reveal those private territories. Embroidery can expose memory in all its disarray. Each piece is stitched completely by hand. Sometimes the thread speaks. Sometimes, I make it scream.”

The global pandemic made the earth stand still for us all. For Judith Kindler, this meant two years of being mostly bedridden and unable to create her art, which has always been an integral part of her life. By 2022, she could finally begin painting again with an entirely new perspective. Kindler set her mind on a brighter future emerging from a period of darkness and stillness. She brings forth a narrative of strength and optimism in this body of work through personal and universal symbolism. Respectively, these animals become icons of productivity, peace, and the gentleness of nature.

Labeled a “neo-pop” and “post-pop” artist by such critics as Peter Frank, Miller does indeed draw from the pop-cultural imagery that saturated American consciousness during the 1950s and 1960s. It was a time during which advertising and text became indelibly encrypted into our experience of everyday life. Life as “advertised” and life as “lived” were insuperably intertwined on the pages of LIFE and LOOK magazines, on television shows, commercials, billboards, hotel signs, romance novels, and even on matchbook covers as never before. Miller’s paintings excavate this imagery and often appear as unreconstructed fragments of these signs, drips, patterns, and phrases. These form the layers of Miller’s pop cultural imagery, literally and figuratively.

“My paintings start with popular culture and the idea of Americana. From there, I build with paint and collage my own story of love, nature, and life. I want the viewer to look for the hidden messages and information I apply with a formalist application much like a realist painter.”

Drawing on the cultural and geographic influences of his California roots, Greg Miller explores images of the American urban and rural landscape of the mid-twentieth century. His mixed media paintings are nostalgic, rousing a shared cultural memory while commenting on contemporary perception.

California-raised and Texas-based photographer Steve Wrubel turned his lens towards the power, leather, dirt, and sweat of the American Rodeo. Moved by stories from his family’s past in the Mojave Desert, Rodeo takes us to a place of light, motion, space, energy, and detail that begs us to question what it is to be alive. Using advanced graphic techniques and technology, Wrubel freezes the action so the viewer can examine crisp details of the sport that, in motion, are invisible to the naked eye. He then isolates his subjects from their typically distracting backgrounds. He invites the viewer to focus clearly on the finer and often unseen details of his issues, offering a deeper story of what is going on in the split second that his images were created.

OCHI is pleased to present Monday Morning, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Los Angelesbased artist Adam Beris. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Drawing from an existentially observational sense of place and a playful approach to the material, Beris’ self-described ‘grass paintings’ evoke finite fields of visual language and familiar objects. In each work, the artist recreates patches of a neighborhood park riddled with ephemera left behind from parties, playdates, and picnics. Squeezing paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, Beris builds each bulbous blade of grass to render a three-dimensional assortment of hidden objects strategically placed and peering through the abstracted foliage. In searching for these Easter eggs, the audience recontextualizes discarded objects with little perceived value and resurrects them as signifiers of a present place and time— satirical evidence that the artist leaves the studio. Poker cards, action figures, plastic insects, and dice appear tucked away under paint, repetitively layered in a gesture towards unpredictability and chaos. Car keys, party decorations, and other symptoms of capitalistic excess are littered throughout, creating a synthesis of human interruptions to natural growth. Beris meticulously harmonizes both the raw materiality of paint and the object. Overly simplified baseball, flower, and cigarette icons blur the lines between consumption and creation, sign and signifier. Each object—trash, treasure, or stylized depiction—carries equal importance in Beris’ landscapes.

Balancing simplicity and hidden depths with patience, skill, and humor, each work in Monday Morning presents an immersive viewing experience that is both unusual and quotidian, engaging and meditative. With a borderline fetishistic appreciation of the physical qualities of paint, Beris pokes fun at formalized art-making traditions as he privileges the purity of the material.

The Top End of Australia encompasses the indigenous regions of the Tiwi Islands and East and West Arnhem Land, a large parcel of Northern Australia that is Aboriginalowned and-managed land. This vast tract of nearly 100,000 square kilometers is the home of the Tiwi and the Yolgnu, the Indigenous custodians of the land and its stories. People began as much as 40,000 years ago with their distinct rich cultural and artistic traditions, and their beautiful artworks carry forward important kinship relationships and sacred stories of creation. This area of Australia feels like another world. Fresh and saltwater purposefully intertwine, and redocher rocks nestle amongst vast beaches rich with sea life and fringed by dense stringy-bark forest. It is an unimaginable paradise. Here, land and sea are connected in a single cycle of life for which the Yolngu and Tiwi hold the songs and designs. In July 2021, Caycedo traveled through Idaho, visiting dams, speaking with members of the Shoshone-Bannock and Nez Perce Tribes, researching their traditional fishing practices, and interviewing biologists and others, all in preparation for the creation of an installation featuring a new film, Reciprocal Sacrifice, and sculpture, Salute of the Fish.

Eirik Johnson Photographer Eirik Johnson has often explored the places where human activity and wilderness intersect, including the Elwha River in Washington, where the Glines Canyon Dam and Elwha Dam have both been removed. The exhibition includes a photograph of the Elwha Dam and a diptych Johnson made at the site of the Glines Canyon Dam before and after removal. For this exhibition, Johnson has made a commissioned series of photographs “along the banks of the roiling wild Elwha,” exploring the transformation the river and landscape have undergone in the eight years since dam removal.

Carolina Caycedo Since 2013, Carolina Caycedo has pursued Be Dammed, an exploration in multiple media of the impact of dams on Indigenous and traditional peoples in the Americas.

A BIG IDEA project of Sun Valley Museum of Art Coinciding with renewed dialogue about the possibility of breaching dams throughout the Columbia River Basin, this BIG IDEA project offers a conversation about the impact of dams on Idaho and the American West. Dams have shaped Idaho’s landscapes, ecosystems, and economies for more than a century.

At this historic moment, the project considers the history of damming in the Pacific Northwest, the effects of dams on the region, and a reimagined future for rivers and the life dependent on them in the American West. The exhibit features work from four artists.

James Prosek Artist, writer, and naturalist James Prosek is interested in intersections and interdependence within ecosystems. He often investigates the effects of boundaries, both real (dams) and imaginary (map lines), on wildlife migration and relationships between species.

Following a site visit last summer, Prosek has made a large-scale mural, watercolor paintings, and sculptures to help visitors better understand the effects of dams on Idaho’s salmon and other fauna and flora.

For this exhibition, she has made four paintings of the dams along the lower Snake that were recently proposed for breaching, juxtaposing their monumentality with the waterways they intersect.

She is graceful and soft-spoken. She is in recovery from a recent stroke, my first patient of the day. Her husband is with her. I introduce myself and say, “I’m here to help you recover from any language loss.” She agrees to have an assessment, and we begin. I present the first item, and she hesitates… Her husband says, “Honey, you know this! Remember!” She seems to be thinking, and I remind him that this moment is all about her; later, we can talk about ways he can help. He nods to me. He understands. When she is ready, I continue with the next item. In the space of allowing her to respond, her husband says, “Honey, remember, last year, 2021.” “Yes,” she says, trying to remember. I catch his eye, “Please let her do her thoughtful interactions for all own work,” I say. He excuses himself to get some iced tea and leaves us to finish the session. In that quiet moment, she says, “It’s hard for him, but right now ...” as her words trail off, I sense her trying to say she is doing her best. We complete the assessment, make a plan for some rehab, and say goodbye. Outside her room, her husband is waiting.

“I’m so worried,” he says. “What’s the outcome of this?” We talk about ways he can bridge the current speech gap and help take pressure off the situation. Communication is complicated. It’s amazing that most of the time, it successfully happens, and it’s easy to see how a neural event can cause holdups in the system. Here are some ways to help when that occurs:

QUESTIONS: Sometimes, a person’s best speech effort is yes or no: “Do you want the window open?” This is easier than, “How can I make you more comfortable?” ALPHABET BOARD: Draw the alphabet letters on a piece of paper, five across and five down (six on the last row). Keep it simple. Then you may ask, “What do you want for breakfast?” They point to the letter E. “Eggs?” They nod “yes.” Success! LONG-TERM MEMORY: Bridge to your person by asking them about growing up. They may access these experiences more easily, while things that happened recently often feel confusing.



CONVERSATIONAL FRAMES: Draw your person’s attention to prepare them for your message, like: “I want to ask you a question” (ask your question), “I have a story to tell you” (tell your story). Other phrases could be, “Let me tell you a joke I heard,” or “I want to share something with you.”

CHOICE OF TWO: Try phrasing your question with limited options: “Would you like water or juice?” This is easier to process than, “What would you like to drink?” CLOSED-ENDED

 EXPECT YOUR PERSON TO FORGET: The current situation feels confusing. They don’t remember that they asked you the same thing several times, so act like it’s the first time you told them. It’s OK. You could try writing something on a note, but this strategy has its own challenges.



2. Don’t laugh about something your person says within earshot of them. What they say may sound cute, but they try their best to sound “normal” and dignified.

1. Do choose to believe that your person is trying their best, no matter what the performance. Although this may not always be accurate, it takes our judgment (something like, “They’re just not trying!”) out of our attitude and helps us to bridge with them.

1. Don’t say these phrases: “We already talked about that. Don’t you remember? Did you forget? I already told you. Try to remember.” Usually, they are intended as a helpful memory jog. However, these phrases can sometimes sound critical and are best avoided.

WELLNESS | ST. LUKE’S  WAIT: Give the person ten seconds (silently) and actually count it. Don’t restate your sentence before the ten seconds because that restarts the message processing journey. After ten seconds, restate your message. They may have forgotten what you said. 

3. Don’t talk about them in front of them without including them. Your person may be having trouble speaking, but they may still have a good awareness of the present.

2. Do just be with your person. Words are an accessory. The friendship, shared experiences, and feelings that connect us live in our eyes and heart. They can be felt and understood with a gaze or a quiet presence. We can allow each other space to adjust to change gradually, resting when needed. Your person is with you, and sometimes that is enough.

SIMPLIFY: Processing spoken language can be tricky, so break a long sentence into parts and add a pause or two. One idea per sentence should help to keep your message clear. YOUR QUESTION: People tend to say less after a neurological impairment, so they get asked many questions that can be tiring. Try a question in disguise. Four effective phrases are “I wonder…,” “Maybe…,” “I’m curious…,” or “Tell me….” In practice, these phrases sound like, “I wonder how you are feeling?” or “Maybe you would like a sandwich?” and another, “I’m curious about how your day went, tell me about it….”

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne.
