INTRODUCTION
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Acting President Dr. Joseph C. Hoffman
In my first few months serving as Acting President of SUNY Canton, I had the privilege of spending time with the many alumni who came back to their alma mater for Alumni Weekend, July 19-21. What a fantastic introduction to this College, its rich history (not to mention its many names) and the talented and dedicated folks that have graduated from SUNY Canton over the years. I remain truly impressed by the generosity and commitment that all of you – our alumni, friends, faculty and staff, both past and present – continue to show the SUNY Canton community. In this issue, you will find profiles of some of our alumni doing great things with their SUNY Canton education – like Richard Destito ’98, working to revitalize low-income neighborhoods in Syracuse. You will also find articles about some talented current students – like Pierre Nzuah `14, a native of Cameroon who has found a true home at SUNY Canton and the surrounding community. And, of course, we celebrate some of our long-serving and well-loved faculty and staff – like Danny and Linda Fay, appearing on the cover. I hope you find this issue of After Canton informative, interesting and inspiring. It is with your generous support that SUNY Canton continues to thrive.

Robert M. Thompson Jr. `42 was chosen as the recipient of the 2013 SUNY Canton Distinguished Alumnus Award for his immeasurable contributions to the North Country and the field of agriculture. He accepted the award during the College’s Alumni Weekend celebration in July.
“Mr. Thompson is an inspiration to our students and the entire SUNY Canton community,” said SUNY Canton’s Director of Alumni/ Development Peggy S. Levato. “He is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance.”
In his memoir, Thompson wrote that his father, Robert Sr. `10, negotiated the lease of a bull to

Returning to school after nearly 40 years to earn an associate degree in Liberal Arts was not without its challenges. When she hit a stumbling block, though, she said the faculty was always willing to help. “I had never used a computer before, but I was determined to make good grades,” she said. “John Nixon helped me learn – all of my professors were very caring individuals.” Cappellino’s grandchildren are following in her footsteps. Her granddaughter Ashley A. Frank graduated from SUNY Canton in 2006, and her grandson Paul is currently a student. When asked what she would like to accomplish next, she indicated that she would like to someday learn how to skydive and possibly continue her studies.

A Lifetime of Service Dan & Linda Fay A couple with 80 years of combined service to SUNY Canton has influenced generations of students and left an indelible mark on the College and the community. Daniel G. and Linda L. Fay began their careers at SUNY Canton in 1968 and 1972, respectively. Dan, an accounting professor in the School of Business and Liberal Arts, has been an active board member of the Canton College Foundation for more than 20 years. In 2011 he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service – one of SUNY's most prestigious honors. Linda was granted emeritus status after teaching nursing for more than three decades. Before her retirement in 2005, she served on numerous committees and helped develop the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. In 2010 the College honored her service by selecting her as the Honors Convocation namesake. The Fays have invested heavily in ensuring student success, and both agree the most rewarding part of their careers is seeing SUNY Canton alumni excel in their chosen fields. “It’s wonderful to see students become successful in accounting and business,” Dan said. Linda added that one of her greatest joys is watching the College’s nursing alumni provide outstanding care to patients in area hospitals, including Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, where she serves as a board member. The Fays have given endlessly to SUNY Canton and the community, and they have served as mentors to many alumni, including Sylvia M. Kingston `78, a former student 4

Linda gives generously of her time to the Grasse River Heritage Area Development Corporation, the Canton Housing Authority and the Remington Arts Festival, among others. Dan has helped create student scholarships and is involved in an organization called Shared Values Africa, which provides affordable energy solutions to low-income Africans. “Dan and Linda continually give of their time and talent in a behindthe-scenes manner, never drawing attention to themselves,” said SUNY Canton Vice President for Advancement David M. Gerlach `83. “They exemplify what it means to be committed to an organization and a community.”

Medical Marvel
Photos by Mark J. Dye
As the head of robotic surgery at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, N.J., Dr. David J. Dupree `97 is renowned for solving the most difficult, perplexing medical cases from around the country. It has been a long road to success for the Ogdensburg native, but he readily admits he wouldn’t be where he is today if it weren’t for SUNY Canton. Dupree began taking classes at SUNY Canton in 1991 with the intention of becoming a nurse. But he quickly realized that wasn’t the route he wanted to take. “I vividly remember lying in my bed in Smith Hall, staring at the ceiling trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life,” he said. Even though his grades weren’t stellar, he said his professors always encouraged him to keep going and pursue his dreams. He recalled a time when he was working nights and taking classes during the day. He fell behind in calculus, and his professor, Stanley A. Fraser, found Dupree’s home number and called to check on him. “He cared enough to call and find out how I was doing,” he said. “Professor Fraser worked with me to make sure I completed the course.” After leaving SUNY Canton to pursue a bachelor’s degree, he said he greatly missed the personal connection with his former instructors. “The professors are what make SUNY Canton a top-notch school,” he said. “It was the best college that I attended.” Dupree set his sights on medical school and quickly earned a reputation as an extremely talented surgeon with a big heart. He said about 30 percent of his surgeries are done on a pro bono basis for those who are uninsured, and another large portion of his patients have complex conditions that many of his colleagues refuse to treat. That’s exactly what happened in 2012 when he received international attention after removing a 51-pound tumor from a woman who was near death. He recounted the harrowing five-hour surgery on the television show “The Doctors” and travels the country giving lectures on complicated abdominal surgeries. Dupree said he takes pride in the fact that he is often a patient’s last hope and gets an enormous amount of job satisfaction from helping those in need. “I bring a small-town surgical mentality to a big city,” he said. 6

Against All Odds
International student Pierre Nzuah `14 has overcome insurmountable odds to fulfill his dream of studying in the United States.
Nzuah grew up on a farm in the African nation of Cameroon with 18 siblings. With his parents unable to pay for his education, he began working to raise money for middle and high school tuition. After graduation, Nzuah knew the only way to expand his knowledge was to move away from his family and attend a oneyear technical school in another part of the country. He studied data processing and worked at a cyber café, but when the owners couldn’t pay him, he decided to research possibilities to study abroad.
Pierre Nzuah `14
“This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I would not trade it for anything.”
Although Nzuah grew up without access to electricity or phones, he was immediately interested in SUNY Canton’s bachelor’s degree in Electrical Technology. Luckily, he had an uncle who was willing to loan him money for tuition, but it took nearly two years and hundreds of dollars to obtain his visa and complete his application. He finally arrived at SUNY Canton in January 2011 and made the President’s List his first semester. He joined the First Presbyterian Church of Canton and served as a peer mentor for other students. Then he received terrible news that his uncle was bankrupt. Thanks to donations from community members, the College and former SUNY Potsdam French Professor Annette R. Plante, Nzuah has been able to continue his studies. “I am very grateful to Ms. Plante and others in the community who have helped me stay in school,” Nzuah said. “I am also thankful to my roommate, who also helped me a lot.” He has been on the President’s List every semester, and his work as a resident assistant and math tutor helps defray some of his tuition costs; however, his future is still uncertain. A scholarship fund called “Against All Odds” has been established to help Nzuah and future students from Africa or Asia.
After graduation he said he wants to teach children in Cameroon and pay forward the kindness he has been shown by the Canton community.
“This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me,” he said. “I would not trade it for anything.”
“Teaching is in my blood,” he said. “I want to share my knowledge with kids who are from where I grew up.” AFTER CANTON Fall 2013 Magazine

Syracuse's Renaissance Man
Richard A. Destito `98 is leading a crusade to revitalize one of the poorest neighborhoods in Syracuse.
It all began in 2005 when he purchased an abandoned manufacturing building in the Near West Side neighborhood. He named it “The Gear Factory” and dreamed of refurbishing the property and renting spaces to artists and musicians. “I wanted to create a place where artists could work together,” he said. Since then, he has been remodeling the spaces a little at a time. His tenants now include a company that makes cast-iron cookware by hand, a furniture designer, photographers, screen printers, painters, graphic designers and musicians. After purchasing the Gear Factory, Destito wanted to do something more. He bought a run-down Victorian home not far from the Gear Factory for $1 through a program sponsored by Home Headquarters Inc. The nonprofit group purchases vacant properties and either renovates them or sells them to entrepreneurs like Destito, who have the ability to refurbish the homes themselves. He used the many skills he learned while earning his associate degree in Construction Tech: Management at SUNY Canton to restore the house to its former grandeur. A native of Sherrill, Destito left New York soon after completing his studies. After traveling around the country for three years, he began to realize that the Central New York area had more to offer than he once thought. “Syracuse’s low cost of living and proximity to major metropolitan areas is unique,” he said. Destito has been trying to get others to see the benefits of living and working in the city and hopes his projects are the start of a full-scale renaissance of downtown Syracuse. So far his efforts have caught the attention of local legislators and the media. The New York Times ran a feature story applauding his vision, and Albany recently awarded Destito $680,000 in the form of a state grant for improvements to the Gear Factory. He admits there is still a long way to go but is optimistic about the future and wants more people to get involved in transforming the city. “Everyone has ideas,” he said. “What’s rare is when people get together and make those ideas a reality.” 8 AFTER CANTON Fall 2013 Magazine

Research Dream Team
Natalie Kurgan `13 “I would like to make a prosthetic that is fully integrated with the body but not invasive.”
Joel M. “Miles” Canino `13 and Natalie A. Kurgan `13 are developing a prosthetic that may one day change the lives of people who have lost parts of their fingers. The idea was developed after they learned about 18-year-old Abigail M. Mott, who is missing the top portion of some of her fingers due to a congenital condition. She is the daughter of Stanley R. Mott and Molly A. Mott, SUNY Canton's dean of academic support services and instructional technologies.
Joel Canino `13
“We designed it exactly how Abbey wanted. It’s nylon-based, sweat-resistant and entirely mechanical.”
“There is no electricity involved, which makes it more user-friendly,” Kurgan added. Although Mott does not require the use of a prosthetic, she said this design could help others who can’t accomplish everyday tasks without one.
Canino and Kurgan wanted to custom-design the artificial fingers – which could be attached to a glove – and they consulted with Mott about how she wanted it to function.
"Hopefully down the road Miles and Natalie will be building prosthetics on an even larger scale, helping those who suffer from physical challenges," Mott said. "I am fortunate to be given this opportunity to act as a stepping stone for them."
“We designed it exactly how Abbey wanted,” said Canino. “It’s nylonbased, sweat-resistant and entirely mechanical.”
Canino and Kurgan, who both earned bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Technology and are currently pursuing advanced
degrees at Clarkson University, said they are currently in the patent phase and determining the design’s market feasibility. After graduation Kurgan said she would like to continue research in the field of prosthetic technology. “I would like to make a prosthetic that is fully integrated with the body but not invasive,” she said. Canino’s family has strong ties to SUNY Canton. He is the third generation to attend the College. His father, Joel W. Canino, is a 1987 graduate, and the Canino School of Engineering Technology is named in honor of his grandfather, the late Joel M. Canino `59. AFTER CANTON Fall 2013 Magazine

TWENTY YEARS OF EXCELLENCE A RETROSPECTIVE OF JOSEPH L. KENNEDY’S PRESIDENCY

fondly recall what it was like to work with "Dr. K."
10
AFTER CANTON Fall 2013 Magazine
Some compared him to a CEO, running the successful educational enterprise named SUNY Canton. Many remember his incredible drive, enthusiasm and charisma. Almost everyone noted his poise, his inspirational leadership and his phenomenal diplomacy. Others called him an artist who used the entire campus as a canvas. According to some, Dr. Joseph L. Kennedy was the face of SUNY Canton for 20 years, and his tenure left a lasting impression. Then Acting President Robert Fraser gave Kennedy a unique gift upon his arrival at the College in 1993.. Rather than report
the success of students, the commitment and dedication of the faculty, Fraser said he handed Kennedy a hockey stick as a symbol of leadership. “At the time, it’s to be noted that the Northstars had won the NJCAA national championships numerous times,” Fraser said. Kennedy remembered that event vividly and returned the “symbol of leadership” to the former acting president when Fraser was inducted into the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame. During his first year, Kennedy challenged the administration to create five new academic programs to advance the College, according to Dr. Eric T. Pellegrino `69, who held several titles, including executive assistant to the president. “We made a good team,” said Pellegrino, who is also a distinguished
professor emeritus. “He always let you do the job you were hired to do. We worked hard to write the proposals. At the end of his first year, we had six new programs instead of five.”
“He had this extraordinary quality to set everyone around him at ease. His conduct, the way he comported himself, was beyond reproach."
Josephine P. Swift, retired assistant to the president
According to Canton Town Supervisor David T. Button, "Early in his administration, he knew that the school had to grow in order to survive, and he understood that his decisions had the potential to significantly impact the Canton community. As the College grew, his involvement in local government helped the town stay in front of the curve. Joe's entrepreneurial spirit has helped transform Canton College from a small school with an uncertain future to one that we can all be proud of. He has helped do the same thing for the Canton community, for which we should all be grateful." Former College Council Chairman Wesley L. Stitt recalled that Dr. Kennedy was very supportive of bringing college courses to high school students in the North Country. “Our faculty would travel to Heuvelton and Ogdensburg to deliver face-to-face classes,” Stitt said. “Later we added Canton and even Massena.” Later, Kennedy helped champion online courses for high school students, allowing them to begin their higher education from anywhere while earning high school credits. Dr. Anthony Beane, a professor in the Veterinary Science Technology department, said, “Joe liked to throw paint at the wall and see what happened. He had a lot of ideas. By tossing them out there, it allowed the people to think about his ideas and to give their feedback.” Kennedy, a consummate animal lover, would stop by the kennels in the Veterinary Science Technology classrooms. “He would pop in to see the animals that we had
from the shelter,” Beane said. “He ended up adopting several dogs over the years and, in the process, we got to know him on a more personal level.” Josephine P. Swift, a retired assistant to the president, said, “He had this extraordinary quality to set everyone around him at ease. His conduct, the way he comported himself, was beyond reproach. People, students and faculty all felt very fortunate to be in his company. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with him. He trusted me, and I wore that trust like a badge of honor.” Beane added, “He was polished yet very ordinary in his interactions with people. He had a wonderful way about him that was very engaging to the people around him. Those people may have been students, faculty, staff, College Foundation Board Members, members of the Associated
Colleges or College alumni. He knew how to speak to each group. He was like a magician in the way that he interacted with people.” Upon reflection about his arrival on campus, Kennedy described the College as a 1959 Oldsmobile, or a wonderful vehicle that did not fit in with its modern rivals. Most of the Technology Sector colleges in SUNY were facing similar problems, including threats of closure. Throughout his career, four new buildings were added, and the old campus center was expanded and renovated. Towards the end of his career as college president, he described the College as a Toyota Prius, being efficient, sleek and desirable. A selection of highlights from Dr. Kennedy’s career are featured over the next two pages. His legacy through memories and his documented achievements could easily fill a book. Athletics Expansion
XX In the past few years athletics has expanded from 9 to 14 teams with the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, golf and women’s ice hockey. The total number of student-athletes has more than doubled from 126 in 2010 to nearly 300 this year.
XX As SUNY Canton continues its progress toward becoming a full NCAA member (we are currently in our second of four provisional years), Roos teams have posted signature victories over opponents such as Hamilton College, Alfred University, Wells College and SUNY Potsdam.
New banners commemorating former teams and athletes hang proudly in the ice arena.
Roos Volleyball
XX Women's volleyball has been remarkable over the past two seasons (2012 – 25 wins, 4 losses; 2013 – 29 wins, 8 losses) with victories over schools such as St. Lawrence University, SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Oswego. SUNY Canton also hosted the 2013 and 2014 USCAA National championships.
Roos House Hosts Special Olympics
XX The Athletic Department's most rewarding accomplishment this year was hosting the regional Special Olympics competition. Nearly 300 Special Olympians participated, and approximately 200 students and staff volunteered at the event. Plans are underway to host next year's competition.
Hall of Fame
Fifty of the most prolific individuals and families from the College's history were recently enshrined in the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame. The latest inductions in 2012 and 2013 complete the prestigious Century Club, featuring the first 100 members of the Hall of Fame. The ceremony has become the signature event at Alumni Weekend, honoring the dedication and support of faculty, staff and benefactors of the College.
