Dear Alumni and Friends, Thank you for welcoming me so warmly to SUNY Canton. It is my distinct privilege to serve as the College’s fourth president. Shortly after my arrival, I had the pleasure of attending my first Alumni Weekend where I met a remarkable group of people who care very deeply about their alma mater. In fact, everywhere I go, I seem to run into people associated with SUNY Canton – business owners, medical professionals, public servants, philanthropists – all working together to make others’ lives better. It has given me a fantastic perspective of the far-reaching ways that our college enhances all aspects of life in the community.

Glenn C. Werlau `57, president and owner of Werlatone Inc., recently opened the doors of his manufacturing company headquarters in Patterson to SUNY Canton’s student Electrical Engineering club.
The visit was designed to provide insight into Werlatone’s business of developing high-power radio frequency components. Students toured the production, testing and laboratory areas where engineers showcased the latest technology. As a longtime college supporter, Werlau’s donations helped fund the trip. He spoke to students about the dedication required to become a successful entrepreneur, as well as the future of the radio frequency industry. “It’s one thing to hear someone talk about job opportunities when they visit the College or the classroom, it is quite another reality when students are able to see and visit facilities and alumni who build their lives upon their education,” said SUNY Canton Instructional Support Technician and club adviser David W. Hartle. “We are grateful to Glenn for sharing his time and resources with our students.”

The Secrets to Success
When John G. Duken `81 visited SUNY Canton this fall, he gave an inspiring presentation to business students about the secrets to his success. Perseverance, discipline and intellectual curiosity were a few of the qualities he said have served him well during his career. As the executive vice president of global merchandising for Dick’s Sporting Goods – one of the country’s most successful sports retailers – Duken is part of a team that manages the day-to-day operations of the $6.8 billion company.
John Duken '81
He credited SUNY Canton for providing an environment where he could grow academically and personally. He learned to study, work collaboratively in committees, seek leadership positions and express opinions. After earning his associate degree in Accounting, he applied to the University of Southern California. “I was an average student in high school,” he said. "However, SUNY Canton gave me the opportunity to be competitive in applying to USC and the skills necessary to successfully graduate.” Although he has had an incredible career and has worked in several highprofile positions for Circuit City and Dick’s, he humbly admits he usually isn’t the smartest person in the room. “But, I ask a lot of questions and surround myself with very smart people.” He also believes that helping others is a crucial element to finding success in one’s own career pursuits. His volunteer endeavors have included providing leadership to the Catholic School Diocese athletic programs in the greater Pittsburgh area and establishing the Duken Family Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a SUNY Canton student from Clinton County who demonstrates an interest in business. He said, “Being able to support other people’s dreams and help them accomplish their goals is what life is all about.” 6

International student José A. Menendez ˋ16 has traveled more than 2,000 miles from his hometown in Venezuela for the opportunity to study in the U.S. His journey began when he discovered an organization that helps students attend colleges abroad. SUNY Canton was a perfect choice, he said, because he could study Business Administration and play soccer, which has been his lifelong love. “My father gave me a passion for the sport,” he said. “My mother taught me that you must work hard.” His work ethic extends into the classroom, too. He earned a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester and is the recipient of the Rosanna Mae Moser Endowed Scholarship and the Gilbert, Chadwick and Christy Investment Club Scholarship. This spring he was part of a team that was selected to compete against some of the most prestigious schools in the country in the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition. “José leans into any competition and is a natural spokesman for any group,” said Professor Charles R. Fenner, Ph.D., who was the competition adviser. “He settles only for first place in all his endeavors.” Menendez also serves as a role model for other students through his work as a resident assistant on campus and a member of the men’s soccer leadership team. “José is a tremendous human being,” said SUNY Canton's Head Men's Soccer Coach Timothy M. Penrod. “He is friendly, caring and truly a genuine young man. His passion for success is infectious, which is why our coaching staff is happy to let him lead on a daily basis.” Although he has a hectic schedule, Menendez still finds time to lend a hand during the annual “Hop to Help Day,” where student-athletes help elderly and disabled community members with landscaping and trash clean up. His most rewarding experience during his time at SUNY Canton was volunteering with the Special Olympics. “It was so touching,” he said. “It was the best thing I have ever done.”

He believes one of the College’s fundamental strengths is that it is uniquely poised to benefit from the country’s increasing demand for graduates with strong applied skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, healthcare, criminal justice and emergency management.
Upon beginning his tenure as the College’s fourth president in July, he shared his vision for guiding the school to its next phase by building upon the strong foundation set by his predecessors. “SUNY Canton has a rich heritage, and I believe the “There isn’t a student today who doesn’t need an education that College has the potential to enjoy fuses liberal arts with technology,” 8 AFTER CANTON Fall 2014 Magazine

Montreal offers a unique opportunity for SUNY Canton to explore a major in computer game design. While Szafran wants the College’s majors to keep pace with the everchanging technological landscape, he is also drawing inspiration from the College’s agricultural heritage. “I am excited about exploring new programs in agricultural management and agricultural technology, as well as the possibility of reviving our hospitality management major,” he said.
Reaching New Markets
Boosting recruitment efforts domestically and abroad is another priority for the new president. Aside from exploring new degrees and increasing recruitment efforts, Szafran is focusing on helping current students reach their full potential. A pilot project is underway to identify students who may be falling behind, so faculty can reach out to them and offer help. This type of positive intervention, he said, is aimed at improving retention and graduation rates. “This project helps us find the students who may be at risk and reach out to them before it’s too late.” Communicating and interacting with students is a priority for Szafran, and his weekly blog allows him to address their concerns, share news about the College, impart advice and reassure them that the entire campus community cares about their well-being and educational success. “I want students to know what a tremendous support system we have for them,” he said. “It starts with their residence hall director and goes straight up through our faculty. A World Record Career
Lydia C. Dale’s Graphic and Multimedia Design (GMMD) classmates said she was always a little bit strange. Now the 2014 graduate has started her dream job with a company that thrives on oddity. She is working as an intellectual property creative coordinator for Guinness World Records Attractions, which is owned by Ripley’s Entertainment (also known as Ripley’s Believe It or Not) in Orlando, Fla. Among her broad spectrum of responsibilities, she works on updating the Guinness World Records museums. “I do a lot of work picking out exciting and crazy records for our museums and then finding images and other multimedia for display,” she said. “This job has provided a lot of opportunities for me to meet and work with some pretty amazingly talented people.” Dale noted that she met American strongman Chad Netherland, who broke the record for holding back two airplanes from taking flight and the record for the fastest time to escape from a pair of handcuffs, among other feats.

“On days when I'm in the office, I do a lot of image editing, designing concept illustrations, proofreading presentations, some basic video editing, prototyping and brainstorming,” she said. “And of course, there was the fun day when someone brought in a four-legged duck!” Dale said the GMMD program’s emphasis on communications helped her land the position. She said that classes in photography, illustration and typography, and product design all helped her when she started with Guinness World Records. “I think that SUNY Canton's GMMD program does an excellent job teaching students to value and recognize the importance of presentation,” she said. “Through this job, I've realized just how important presentation is in the business world. It's the difference between someone being willing to invest in your product or not.” Dale was at the top of her class in the GMMD program. She received the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and produced the short movie “Learning How to Die” as her senior project. She was the vice president of the College’s student branch of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was a graphic design intern in the College’s Public Relations Department. She is also a published photographer, writer and illustrator. AFTER CANTON Fall 2014 Magazine

Former Dean Retires After 35 Years The SUNY Canton community bids a fond farewell to Daniel J. Sweeney `75, who recently retired after more than three decades of service to SUNY Canton. His responsibilities included Greek affairs and new student orientation. He recently talked about his career at SUNY Canton and future plans.

AFTER CANTON Fall 2014 Magazine
What has been the best part about your tenure at SUNY Canton? Interacting with students and having a positive affect on their lives has been the most rewarding aspect. Working in student affairs can be difficult sometimes – it requires patience to earn the students' respect and trust. It's certainly not something that happens overnight, but when students thank you for the work you have done, it's all worth it. What's the biggest change you've seen at the College over the years? The advent of four-year degrees has been the biggest change. The diversity on campus has also improved as well, which creates a more enriching experience for everyone. Can you share a funny moment from your career? We had an ill-mannered cat that
was causing havoc in the Pet Wing several years ago. We had to suspend him at the end of the semester. What is your fondest memory? My fondest memories have to do with my family. My wife, Margaret, and I had our wedding reception at Chaney. Several years later, we lived off campus when she went into labor in the middle of the night. Our car was about to run out of gas and the lights stopped working, so we rushed to campus and borrowed [Vice President for Advancement] Dave Gerlach's car to get to the doctor. What are you looking forward to during retirement? Being involved in community service, attending church events, gardening and spending time with my family. I'll also have fun deciding what day I'd like to mow the lawn.
