Letter from the President Dear SUNY Canton Community,
SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher with Dr. Zvi Szafran at his inauguration ceremony April 10, 2015.
During my first year as president, I have cherished the opportunity to get to know some of SUNY Canton’s fantastic alumni and share news about the College’s many accomplishments. One of the most exciting achievements of the year, of course, is that we are now full members of the NCAA Division III. This is a huge leap forward for us and a testament to the hard work of our Athletics staff to make sure our programs exceeded the expectations of the NCAA. To celebrate this amazing milestone, we’re encouraging all former SUNY Canton student-athletes to join us for next summer’s Alumni Weekend celebration June 3-5. In addition to relive your former glory as an Aggie, Northman, Lady Viking, Northstar or Kangaroo, we'll have special sports tournaments for you to engage in some friendly competition with one another. Check your email or “like” the SUNY Canton Alumni Association Facebook page to learn all the details. Alumni Weekend is just one of the ways in which you can “come home” to SUNY Canton. Our wonderful Alumni Affairs Office plans a number of fun events throughout the year in every corner of the country to allow former students to reconnect and reminisce. Take a moment to visit www.canton. edu/alumni to find out about upcoming gatherings—I look forward to seeing you! Throughout this issue, alumni will recall the transformative effect SUNY Canton has had on their lives. I'm certain that as you read through this issue, it will bring to mind all the ways the College has changed your life for the better. As president, I am committed to ensuring SUNY Canton continues to provide a life-changing educational experience to our current and future students. With this goal in mind, I encourage you to consider making a contribution to the Canton Fund, which provides financial support for scholarships, campus enhancements, tuition assistance and more. Whether you give $5 or $50,000— every donation can make a difference
for our students. Look for the campaign materials in your mailbox and consider investing in the future of SUNY Canton. As we embark upon a new year, I am excited about the possibilities ahead and share your pride in all we have accomplished in the past year thanks to your generous support. Best regards, Zvi

CURRENT NEWS SUNY Canton Honors Former Presidents with Building Renamings The College paid tribute to two influential leaders by renaming two prominent campus buildings in their honor during Alumni Weekend in June.
Retired President Joseph L. Kennedy, current President Zvi Szafran and President Emeritus Earl W. MacArthur in front of MacArthur Hall, formerly known as the Faculty Office Building.
The Faculty Office Building was renamed for President Emeritus Earl W. MacArthur, who led the College from 1972 to 1992. His many contributions include establishing the Canton College Foundation, which helps provide scholarships for students and financial support for faculty initiatives. He also set new enrollment records by adding an additional 1,000 students during his first four years as president. “Whatever I achieved was because of the team that I worked with,” MacArthur humbly said at the ceremony. “I worked with a great group of administrators and outstanding faculty.” The Grasse River Suites was named after retired President Joseph L. Kennedy, who served from 1993 to 2013. He doubled the College’s enrollment during his tenure and created the first four-year programs to SUNY Canton’s academic offerings. Kennedy also helped fuel growth in the college’s athletic program, becoming a provisional member of the NCAA. “It was an honor for me to serve as the president of SUNY Canton,” Kennedy said during the ceremony. “It was exciting, always challenging and almost always fun.”

CURRENT NEWS New Center to Help Boost Financial Literacy Among Students and Community Two local financial institutions have donated more than $17,000 to help establish a financial literacy center on campus that will provide financial education and counseling services to students and community members. St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union donated $10,000 to help establish the center, which will host free seminars, lectures and classes on a variety of basic personal finance topics, such as budgeting, debt management, tax preparation and retirement planning. Alumnus and St. Lawrence Credit Union President and CEO Todd R. Mashaw `88 presented the check to SUNY Canton in August. "St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union is happy to support SUNY Canton in establishing the much needed financial literacy center and look forward to watching this become a successful endeavor for financial literacy within the North Country," said Mashaw.
Pictured are Alumni and Development representatives and administrators with Elizabeth A. Pier, St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union Business and Development Manager and Todd R. Mashaw, St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union President and CEO (Left) and Terry A. Phalon, North Country Savings Bank President and COO (Right). In addition, North Country Savings Bank has pledged $7,500 over five years to purchase software and other tools needed to assist with the free training. "The SUNY Canton Financial Literacy Program is a natural fit to North Country Savings Bank's mission,” said Terry A.
Phalon, North Country Savings Bank President and COO. “As a local mutual savings bank, we are focused on making the communities within which we serve better places to live.” The center will be located in Cook Hall and is scheduled to open in fall of 2015.
On the Road Again Alumnus Guilford ‘Gil’ White `68 made a one-of-a-kind donation to the College earlier this year in the form of a 1956 Lincoln Premiere. White, a longtime College supporter and 2011 Distinguished Alumnus, intended the gift to be used as a training tool for the Automotive Club and then sold to benefit the Automotive Technology Department and the Canton Fund. The car was partially restored in the 1980s but needed some additional work. Automotive Club members Cecil R. Kirkey `16 and Joseph L. Bishop `16 sprang into action and replaced the brakes, fuel pump, wheel bearings and other parts. Bishop, who owns a mobile auto detailing business, also used his skills to bring the paint, chrome and interior back to life. “This has been a great project for the students to work on,” said Kenneth C. Wurster, Assistant Professor and Cur4

Dave Gerlach Becomes Lincoln College President “He certainly wore a lot of hats,” said Daniel J. Sweeney Dean of Students, who was partially responsible for initially hiring Gerlach. “Dave brought a sincere enthusiasm and a tremendous energy level to everything he did. He bled blue and gold through and through.” He eventually became Dean of Enrollment Management, or the college’s director of admissions, Sweeney encouraged him to begin working toward his doctorate. But this wasn’t his last stop at SUNY Canton. He later applied for and became the Vice President for Advancement. “The interesting part about Dave’s career is that he worked up from an absolute entry level to become a vice president,” said President Emeritus Dr. Joseph L. Kennedy. “At one point or another he touched almost every part of the college.”
David M. Gerlach ’83 decided that he wanted to become a college president when he turned 27 years old while he was working with SUNY Canton’s Residence Life Office.
During his time as Vice President, Gerlach worked directly with the Alumni and Development offices and oversaw the largest capital campaign in the college’s 100-year history. He also administered Admissions, Public Relations, and Athletics, departments, which all grew and thrived under his administration.
“Dave encouraged his staff to be successful in their roles while still having a bit of fun at work,” said Anne C. Williams ’78, who worked with Gerlach closely for 17 years. “He was a team player and he treated his staff like family.” Gerlach has a bachelor’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan College, his master’s from St. Lawrence University and recently received his doctorate from Syracuse University. SUNY Canton is a family college for the Gerlachs. Dave’s wife, Lisa, is a 1983 and 2006 SUNY Canton graduate, and his son, Joshua, is a 2011 graduate. His daughter, Kayla, attended other SUNY colleges. “I cannot thank SUNY Canton enough for the experiences and education that it has provided for me and my family,” he said. “The college’s faculty, staff, students and alumni have been a huge part of my life. Now I’m are looking to the future and building on Lincoln College’s great reputation.” Those who wish to send Dave their regards or congratulatory messages can do so by mail: Dr. David M. Gerlach, Lincoln College, 300 Keokuk Street, Lincoln, IL, 62656, or email dgerlach@ lincolncollege.edu.
This summer, shortly after celebrating his 30th anniversary at the college, he successfully achieved his life goal and left his position to begin his presidency at Lincoln College, a private liberal arts college offering associate and bachelor’s degrees with locations in Lincoln and Normal Illinois. Gerlach often jests about his humble beginnings at SUNY Canton when he started working as a student in Chaney Dining Center where he had to change out milk containers and wash dishes. He also became a Resident Assistant, Residence Hall Director and Director of Residence Life, among other positions.

A 'Reel' Success Story Outdoor enthusiast and entrepreneur Richard S. Patri `91 has turned a favorite childhood hobby into a successful career as the chief operations officer of one of the most popular websites in the sport of fishing. A native of Syracuse, Patri grew up fishing with his family on Oneida Lake, so when he successfully pitched the idea of FishHound.com to investors five years ago, he was on his way to carving out his space in the industry. The website, which has amassed more than on million Facebook fans and 60,000 Twitter followers, provides the most comprehensive collection of fishing reports in the country, as well as tips and techniques from professional anglers.
Rick Patri `91
Patri's business acumen developed over many years working in sales and marketing for large corporations and startups, but he admits he was unsure of a career path when he graduated from high school. So when the time came to choose a college, he selected SUNY Canton because he was confident he would receive the tools he needed to begin a successful career. “I knew the quality of education I would receive would be second to none,” he said. He was impressed by SUNY Canton’s close-knit community and the College’s reputation for providing hands-on instruction. "The moment I stepped on campus, I immediately had a sense that it was a perfect fit for me," he added. After graduating with an associate degree in Individual Studies, Patri earned a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from Northeastern University. He then went on to work as a senior executive for companies such as RAND and Oshyn. During his success at FishHound, he started the digital agency Dustland, whose clients include Volkswagen and Taco Bell. He also created Lucky Tackle Box, a subscription service which introduces fishing gear to more than 20,000 customers. He's also set to appear on the ABC hit show “Shark Tank,” where he’ll present an investment opportunity to expand Lucky Tackle Box. When asked what advice he would give college students about achieving success, Patri advised to emulate the habits of successful entrepreneurs, and more importantly, not to be afraid to make mistakes. “Every time you make a mistake, it’s an opportunity to learn something,” he said. “Sometimes you have to fail ten times before you succeed.” Photo by Mike Lowry, Fishhound.com 66

Hoop Dreams Romario Fletcher `17
SUNY Canton basketball players Sam Annorh `17 and Romario Fletcher `17 had the opportunity of a lifetime this summer when they were selected to compete as a part of Team USA in a four-game tour of Brazil.
Sam Annorh `17
The trip, which was led by USA Sports, allowed 10 top-tier NCAA Division III student-athletes the opportunity to play Brazilian professional, preparatory school and university teams. The pair flew to Orlando where they took part in orientation and practice for two days. Then they departed for Sao Paulo, Brazil, for three games before traveling to Rio de Janeiro for a final matchup. “The competition in Brazil was tough,” Fletcher said. “It was different from the U.S. There were no foul calls, so you had to play through everything.” “We played with athletes from all over the country," Annorh added. "They were all on Division III ranked teams in the NCAA, so it was really fun.” The players also had the opportunity to travel and sightsee in Brazil and gain a greater understanding of a different culture. “The culture in Brazil was awesome,” Fletcher said. “Everybody was friendly, they would come up and talk to us. They were happy to see young, educated men in a different country trying to do something to better themselves in life.” SUNY Canton Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Bechtel helped Annorh and Fletcher facilitate the trip and flew down to Orlando to watch them practice before they left for Brazil. “This was a tremendous opportunity for Sam and Romario to represent our country and travel to Brazil,” Bechtel said. “The team won all four games, and Sam and Romario had a fantastic experience both on and off the court. It is great exposure for our institution and program to have two players chosen to compete with some of the top players in the country.”

A Vet Tech’s 'Tail' For Laura A. Cerruti `15, there is no such thing as an average day at the office.
Laura Cerruti `15
As a licensed veterinary technician at Lakeside Veterinary Clinic in Tupper Lake, her job duties can vary widely from day to day. Some days, she’s assisting with surgery, while others she can be found answering phones, scheduling appointments or performing laboratory work. Though her schedule can be demanding and hectic at times, she said the bond she has developed with the animals and their owners makes it all worth it. “Because we are such a small clinic, we get to know our clients very well,” she said. “You can tell there’s a trust between the animals and our staff. It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.” Life as a veterinary technician isn’t for the faint of heart. However, the instruction she received while pursing an associate degree in Veterinary Science Technology prepared her well for the real world. “The program included a lot of hands-on training, which was extremely valuable when I was hired as a veterinary assistant while still pursuing my degree,” she said. “I learned so much from all the professors, particularly Dr. Mary O’Horo-Loomis [`76] and Dr. Anthony Beane.” Professor Loomis remembers Cerruti as a conscientious student who was passionate about working with animals. “She had a parttime job, commuted from the Adirondacks and still managed to have one of the highest GPAs in the class,” she said. Cerruti’s hard work paid off when she received two scholarships—the Allan P. and Catherine Barnett Newell Endowed Scholarship and the Bridge to Success Endowed Scholarship—to help offset her tuition costs. “The scholarships were a huge help, because I was paying out of pocket for school.” Cerruti said the scholarship assistance she received is just one of the many reasons why alumni support to the College is so crucial.

“For me, giving back to SUNY Canton is important because my gift could help a hardworking student who is trying to pursue an exciting new career, like myself," she said.
Fear Factor Kevin Fear `87
You’ll never find Kevin M. Fear `87 lying down on the job, unless it’s when he’s looking for the best mattresses on the market. Fear has had to work hard throughout his career, and in his current role as President of Mattress Express, he’s grown the company to four locations throughout Central and Northern New York, including his newest store, which opened this fall, in Oneida. His determination and guiding business philosophy to, as he explained, “treat customers honestly and give employees an opportunity for growth while allowing them to enjoy their jobs” seems to be a winning formula for the Syracuse native. But before jumping into the mattress business, Fear had already made his mark as an entrepreneur as the owner of AA&J Insurance and, subsequently, Universe Cellular & Dish, which was one of the most successful Verizon agents in New York State. He sold both businesses and now concentrates solely on Mattress Express. Upon graduating high school, Fear had his heart set on joining his family’s insurance business, so, appropriately enough, he chose SUNY Canton to pursue an associate degree in Banking, Insurance and Real Estate. He confessed that he struggled with academics but valued the time he spent in and out of the classroom. “I had a great time at SUNY Canton, and I fit in very well,” he said. “Through my membership in Alpha Theta Gamma, I had the opportunity to participate in a number of volunteer activities and made some lifelong friends in the process.” Fear is still giving back to the community, but on a much grander scale. He has spearheaded countless philanthropic efforts, which range from organizing Toys for Tots drop-off locations to leading food drives for the Watertown Food Bank. He is also a strong supporter of SUNY Canton through his service as a College Foundation board member. He was named as the College’s 2015 Distinguished Alumnus and sponsors an endowed scholarship that benefits students with learning disabilities; something that Fear dealt with while in school. “Although I was undiagnosed at the time, I had Attention Deficit Disorder during high school and college, so I thought I would try to help other people who have similar conditions.” Fear said his motivation for giving back to the College is quite simple: “It’s part of me, it’s part of my past, and I think it’s important that SUNY Canton is here to educate future generations.” AFTER CANTON Fall 2015 Magazine

NCAA Welcomes SUNY Ca Division III
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Management Council announced
in June that SUNY Canton officially completed its provisional membership process and granted full membership to the NCAA Division III as of September 1, 2015. SUNY Canton completed its provisional status in just three years. Colleges typically must go through four years of provisional status along with an exploratory year before they are recommended for active membership. SUNY Canton applied for and was granted a waiver to consolidate years three and four of the process. “We are thrilled with the NCAA’s decision to accept us as full members of NCAA Division III,” said SUNY Canton Athletic Director Randy B. Sieminski. “It has been a group effort from our coaches, student-athletes, staff, faculty, administration, College Council and numerous departments campus-wide. This is a huge step for our student-athletes and teams as we now become eligible for NCAA postseason competition during the 2015-16 academic year.” 10

For the third year in a row, SUNY Canton hosted the New York State North Country Region Special Olympics May 2. Nearly 200 Special Olympians competed in more than 10 events, and approximately 200 student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators volunteered. "It's one of the best days of the year for us," said Athletic Director Randy B. Sieminski. "I'm extremely proud of the participation of our student-athletes, faculty, staff and volunteers. Over the years we continue to get to know more Special Olympians and it makes the relationship that much more rewarding.

Scholarships Build Success Thomas Woodside ’66
Thomas P. Woodside ’66 started honoring his family’s relationship with the college by funding scholarships. This year he began expanding on his connection by offering a new on-the-job learning opportunity. A decade after he graduated, the Air Conditioning Engineering Technology graduate founded T.P. Woodside Inc. a technical sales organization that provides heating, cooling, power and IT infrastructure solutions. Tom and his wife, Claire, started the Woodside Family Endowment in 1991, which began as a $250 award. As his successful business grew, he continued to augment his donations to the Canton College Foundation. “Those of us who offer scholarships can help promote Canton while giving students new opportunities,” Tom said. “Watching young people grow and aspire to opportunities that we’ve had means so much to us.”
Jessica Fischer ’18
The endowment has helped more than 22 students in about 24 years. Most recently providing funding for Jessica L Fischer ’18, an Alternative and Renewable Energy and Mechanical Engineering Technology major from Tom’s hometown. Tom was so impressed with Fischer that he hired her for a summer internship. Fischer, who has been noted as an exceptional scholar by her professors, was a terrific fit for the business and did outstanding work for the company. “I wanted to learn from this and grow as a person and as a student,” she said. “I now understand what T.P. Woodside does and how it relates to what I’m doing and pursuing in my curriculum.” Fischer said the relationship she’s established with the Woodsides has helped her grow as a student and professionally.
“The scholarship helps financially, but it’s the invaluable knowledge you gain from just talking to your scholarship sponsor,” Fischer said. “It gives me hope to make me think that I can be successful too.” As scholarship sponsors, Tom and Claire said they receive gratification knowing that they are helping students achieve their dreams and are encouraging others to consider sponsoring their own endowments. “Everybody is able to participate differently, but if there is a capacity where you can provide for a scholarship, you should do it,” Tom said. “It’s extremely rewarding to watch young people grow and go out into the employment world and achieve some of the goals that all of us from Canton achieved.”

Remembering Stan Cohen This year the campus community mourned the loss of a former SUNY Canton athletic coach and instructor whose career spanned nearly four decades. Stanley W. Cohen passed away Feb. 18, 2015, in his home in Canton. He began working at the College in 1957 as the men’s head basketball coach and accounting instructor. He led the team to 247 wins and several top-20 national rankings. “Stan was a coaching legend at SUNY Canton,” said Athletic Director Randy B. Sieminski. “He was not only one of the most winning coaches in the history of our school, he was also one of the most respected and admired." He also served as the College’s athletic director and expanded the sport offerings by adding hockey, wrestling, 20

Cohen’s success earned him inductions to SUNY Canton’s Hall of Fame in 2011 and the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. “Our alumni frequently tell us of the profound impact Stan had on their lives,” added Sieminski. “Stan and his teams embodied what college athletics is all about.” In 2011 Stan Cohen’s contributions to the College were honored by Robert C. Rogers `60, who established an endowed scholarship to recognize the accomplishments of his former basketball coach, mentor and friend.
